Excerpt #2
While preoccupied with a mental debate about whether to tear open the package, Madison heard the doorbell. She sprinted down the stairs before the second chime, half expecting to see Jeremiah. Madison took a deep breath, steadied her herself for a confrontation, then opened the door. Instead of Jeremiah, she found herself face to face with a captivating stranger. “Hello,” she said, before panic set in. In her rush, Madison had failed to check the peephole.

“Miss Leigh?” he asked. His sensual drawl emphasized the “Lee” sound of her last name. His simple question instantly struck Madison with a lightning bolt of emotion. She wanted to respond, but couldn’t even remember how to speak. He stepped even closer. “You are Madison Leigh?” he pressed.

Her hands began to perspire. Finally, she managed to say, “Yes, I am.” Madison looked up and captured a glimpse of her own reflection in his mirrored sunglasses. The racing of her heart had caused her face to flush dramatically. She cleared her throat in a struggle to regain control. “And, who are you?”

“I’m an agent with the FBI. My name is Court Braxton.” Madison immediately relaxed.

“Court?” She sounded flirtatious. “As in basketball?” Through his sunglasses, Court watched as Madison squinted to pierce their opaque lenses. He felt an increased attraction for the spirited young woman as she continued to tease him. “Tennis? Racquetball?”

Court clenched his jaw in an effort to stall a grin. “Miss Leigh,” he interrupted. “Please feel free to just call me Agent Braxton.”

One Wine Country Villa
Six Santino Brothers
And lots of wine…

Reeling from the loss of her mother, Sarah Dupont catches her fiancé doing the nasty on top of her pastry table at their San Francisco Bakery.

Devastated, she calls her best friend, lifestyle reporter, Danica Vargas. Danica convinces Sarah to start fresh, and rent a room with her at an historic mansion in Sonoma Valley.

With two roommates who act like the sisters she never had and a feisty landlord to stand in as the grandmother she always wanted, Sarah’s opens a café on the Sonoma Plaza. Her life changes the moment the little bell on the door rings and the notoriously sexy actor Jamie Santino, swaggers in.

Jamie, one of the six Santino Brothers, of Napa Valley Winery fame, needs baking lessons for his new movie and Sarah is just the woman to teach him. Wine flows, their love affair heats up and a tempestuous femme fatale enters the scene.

How can Sarah trust that Jamie isn’t acting when everything he says seems too good to be true?

——————————————————–

Excerpt #2
“I don’t know how I’m going to do this,” Sarah said before taking a big gulp of Honig Sauvignon Blanc. All four women were well into hour two of Chill Hour.

“You know it’s very unbecoming for a lady to slug her wine.  It’s not a shot glass,” Danica said. “And who’s the drama queen now? There’s nothing for you to do. Open the door, let him in, and put him to work. He’ll be gone in fourteen days. I don’t see how he’ll change your routine in any way.”

“You don’t know,” Sarah said. “You weren’t there. You can’t just sneak Jamie Santino into anywhere, and think people wouldn’t notice. It’s crazy town when he’s there. Insane.”

“Did you have to spend a lot of time training him?” said her landlord, Lulu Castelli, scooting her chair closer to the conversation.

“No, I barely talked to him,” Sarah said. “He’s very distracting, let’s put it that way.”

“You’re just not used to anything exciting.” Danica crossed her legs and settled back in her chair. “You’re probably nervous because he’s changing your routine, and he’s so frickin’ gorgeous. I almost lost it the first time I met him, and you know how crazy I am about Michael, so that’s saying something. You’re not used to being around guys.”

“Lots of guys come into the Vine Café every day, and I actually employ men,” Sarah said.

Juliet pursed her lips. “Manny and The Egg Man don’t count.”

“You haven’t taken a day off since you moved here, honey,” Lulu said. “Maybe you should go out and roll around with something besides dough.”

“Ha! Good one, Lulu!” Juliet raised her glass.

The four women took sips, relaxing in silence.

“He has that thing celebrities have,” Juliet said. “It’s what makes them so successful. Try not to get too rattled. Remember, he’s just a person.”

Sarah put her glass down. “I’m not star struck. I’m just not prepared to have that kind of person, waltzing into my business, ruining everything.”

Danica and Lulu looked at each other. “Ever since you moved to Sonoma, you’ve been using your bakery as a hideout,” Danica said. “You’ve always been shy, but it’s getting ridiculous.”

Lulu reached over and patted Sarah’s knee. “It’s just a little change, honey.  It might do you good.”

My Totally Geeked-Out Comic-Con Adventure

Once again, after trying and failing to obtain passes to Comic-Con, my daughter and I boarded the trolley and headed down to the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego to immerse ourselves in the craziness that is Comic-Con culture. This year we decided to attack the event differently. In previous years, we started west and worked our way east, ending up at Petco Park, where there is non-badge-holder seating available for panels, late in the day. Instead, we left earlier, arriving downtown around 9:00 and started at the eastern edge of festivities and worked west. We didn’t get far, because there is just too much to do outside the Convention Center.

Hello Kitty Food Truck Outside Comic-Con in San Diego

Hello Kitty Food Truck Outside Comic-Con in San Diego

Our first stop was under the bridge where food trucks and various interactive activities filled the parking lot. One food truck of note was the Hello Kitty Cafe, where you could purchase such goodies as Hello Kitty Bow Water for $3, or an assortment of doughnuts, petite cakes, or macaroons. They had the longest wait by far of any of the food trucks. Even the promise of a free pink totebag with any $25 purchase wasn’t enough to get me to stand in line for 45 minutes. We did, however, get in line for free swag from the local radio station — a poster and a sticker.

Alien Eyeware

Alien Eyeware

Next we stopped by the Alienware tent to check out the goods and pick up a free pare of Alien Eyeware sunglasses, which I could only wear for about a block before I tripped over the curb. They’re not particularly functional, but they look super cool!

Free T-Shirt from TeeFury

Free T-Shirt from TeeFury

From there we went over to Nerdist at Petco Park where my daughter won a free T-shirt from TeeFury, we got a bunch more swag, and I shook hands with author, Dan Casey, who was autographing copies of 100 Things Avengers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die, and more importantly, he told me about his upcoming book, 100 Things Star Wars Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die. I pretty much squee’d over that.

Wil Wheaton and the Cast of Titansgrave

Wil Wheaton and the Cast of Titansgrave

We were also able to catch part of the Titansgrave panel with Wil Wheaton and cast.

Tom DeLonge

Tom DeLonge

But the highlight of my time there was being able to see Tom DeLonge, lead singer from Blink-182, who was there to promote his Poet Anderson franchise. I had a total fangirl moment.

Attendees from Comic-Con 2015

We found lots of dressed-up people who were all too eager to pose.

At Comic-Con, Even the Buildings Dress Up

At Comic-Con, Even the Buildings Dress Up

Even buildings join in the craziness, getting in costume.

Sharknado 3

Sharknado 3

And Sharknado 3 is really happening.

Zombies are Everywhere at Comic-Con

Zombies are Everywhere at Comic-Con

Once again zombies where everywhere. Everything from a boy scout camp offering to help us with our survival skills during the zombie apocalypse, to a walk through the set of the upcoming Fear the Walking Dead. Unfortunately, waiting in line and traipsing through the set meant we missed two panels. One with Daniel Radcliffe and the other Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies with the best Doctor ever, Matt Smith.

So next year, with or without coveted passes, we’re determined to spend at least two days enjoying the world that is Comic-Con outside the Convention Center.

As the top ranked Freestyle Motocross rider in the world, I have more money than I could ever dream of spending and gorgeous women throwing themselves at me in every city I land. I have everything I could ever want.

Everything except her.

While in Breckenridge for my best friend’s wedding, I was introduced to Dakota Shavell, a friend of the bride-to-be, and from the moment our blue gazes met, sparks flew.

What I initially intended to be a single steamy night together turned into a scorching two week road trip to New Orleans with a sassy-mouthed blonde. Being between her legs gave me a bigger adrenaline rush than I’d ever gotten from flying through the air while straddling a bike.

It was supposed to just be fun, a good time. I planned to walk away unchanged. But it was more. Feelings I never intended to have got involved, and I’ll never be the same. Yet, I still walked away. Except now I’m injured and my outlook has changed. Priorities have become clear. And I’m going back to reclaim her…to show her that together we can make the fire between us burst into flames.

Playlist inspired by Aurelious Forty; Volume One
I think the thing that stands out for me most with Aurelious Forty is how emotional it is. The characters and, as a result, the readers go on an emotional journey that can be pretty extreme at times. Much like our own lives, there are highs and lows for each person that we meet on the pages.

I listen to music all the time. I mean all the time. Driving, cooking, doing laundry, taking a walk, daydreaming, you name it and I’ll have music on while I’m doing it…even if I’m doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I love silence, I think best when there is no noise at all and I can’t write with music on but I often use music to get into the mind or soul of a character.

When I was writing the last two chapters of Aurelious Forty; Volume One I listened to It Will Rain by Bruno Mars about a million times simply because, to me, it sounded like the intensely emotional scene that I was writing. So anytime that I wasn’t actively writing that scene on the day I wrote it, I was playing that song so I could stay in the mindset of my characters. I’m pretty sure my son thought I was nuts, but the process worked for me, it’s an intense scene to say the least!

So, that song is on my playlist inspired by Aurelious Forty; Volume One along with a whole host of others. The songs are either representative of a particular character or situation they are in and they all evoke some emotion, well for me they do and maybe they will for you too. And in case you were wondering, I listened to a lot of Mumford and Sons while writing Volume Two!

About the Author
Dianna Beirne lives in a fantasy world. Okay not really, but part of her wishes she did and, since that’s technically impossible, she writes about fantasy worlds instead. Her first Young Adult novel entitled Aurelious Forty; Volume One quickly turned into her first Young Adult series with the addition of Aurelious Forty; Volume Two and, Aurelious Forty; Volume Three.

When not writing, she’s generally daydreaming which morphs into wondering if that last daydream could turn into a book. She has also recently discovered podcasts but doesn’t exactly understand what they are or why they’re different from regular radio shows. Endless Fate Teaser 1

——————————————————–

Excerpt
Deep sobs raked through my body, recalling how I’d indeed watched the life seep out of Hank and the deep satisfaction it had given me to do so.

What kind of person does that?

I felt his proximity before I heard him, and in seconds, Colton’s hand came to the base of my shoulder blade where he spread his fingertips wide and glided them upward bit by bit.

“Jesus, Paige,” he murmured, barely above a choked whisper. “You’re shaking.”

I hated that I had been distancing myself from him, inadvertently hurting him, but I was powerless to stop it. My mind was my worst enemy.

I closed my eyes, overcome with shame. Colton had never witnessed one of my shower breakdowns before. I preferred to do them in private. I didn’t want anyone to see me fall apart. Especially not Colton. I wanted to be strong for him. I had my pride.

Seconds ticked by before I finally braved spinning around on my heel until I was facing him. Unable to look him in the eyes, I bowed my head and stared at his chest.

How do I explain to him that no matter how many times I shower, I still feel dirty because I have blood on my hands?

Eddie had made me feel weak when he pointed a gun to my head while kidnapping me before knocking me unconscious. Hank had done so by treating me like I was worthless and disposable, as if my life had no value. It was as though they’d stripped me bare, stolen my confidence and my pride…me. Then, I’d become a monster myself and killed without mercy.

So, which one of us is evil?

I shook my head, grief-stricken. Nothing made sense to me anymore.

Colton gently grasped my chin and lifted my gaze to meet his. A crease formed between his brows, and he frowned at me. Worry and regret clouded his normally bright baby-blue eyes.

“Tell me what to do.” Panic filled his voice. “Tell me how I can help you move past this. I will do anything to get rid of that look in those beautiful eyes that I love so much.”

The worst part was knowing that I had no answer for him. I felt robbed of my own mind to make the decision of what I needed to heal. My heart was vacant. I was an empty shell, lost and alone, stuck somewhere in my own private hell.

“Do you remember when you found out the barn fire was arson and you sent me away?” I broke off at the painful memory, recalling what it had felt like when he pushed me away. I was doing no better now, but I was incapable to stop it. I tried to collect my thoughts on where I was going with this.

He winced. “Yes.” His tone was low and full of remorse.

“Then, remember you later snuck in my window and asked me to let you hold me”—I swallowed, stifling the urge to cry—“without any questions or explanations?”

His shoulders rose and fell. Understanding filled his baby-blue eyes. His arms were already in motion, wrapping around my waist. “Yes,” he answered, pulling me close.

“That’s what I need right now. No questions, no judgment…” My voice cracked, and I placed my hands on the center of his chest. “I just need you to hold me.”

An overwhelming pain appeared in his features before he tightly hugged me. He nuzzled his nose into my neck, and I could feel his warm breath along my skin.

“No one’s judging you, Paige. Please, please don’t be so hard on yourself.”

His words sent my heart into a tailspin. I laid my head against his sternum and sobbed uncontrollably. I cried for the lives I’d affected by Hank’s death, mainly his wife and two college-aged children. I silently pleaded for forgiveness for my actions even though it had been self-defense. I prayed my mind would let me let go of this evil head-trip I was currently suffering through and allow me to move forward with my life. I dreamed my life with Colton would return to a normal, simple one.

Eventually, I ran out of tears, and my breathing began to level out until I could only hear the water running and the sounds of my and Colton’s breaths as he continued to comfort me. Somewhere along the way, Colton must have adjusted the nozzle because the water temperature had changed.

“The water’s warmer,” I stated quietly, wanting to break the silence. My lungs were scratchy and raw from all my crying.

“I didn’t want to brave hypothermia.” His lips seemed to curve into a smile, and his hands soothed up and down my sides. “Though, I fear our hot water tank will run empty any minute now, and we’ll be left shivering again.” He shifted fractionally and brought one hand to the base of my chin.

As his thumb started to stroke back and forth across my cheek, he gazed into my eyes. An endless array of emotions rippled out of him, matching the intense look in his baby-blue eyes. “You’ve lost your way before, and so have I.” The lonely ache in his voice seized my heart. “And that’s okay. Heartache has a powerful impact on the soul, and we all get lost now and then. But I need you to promise me that you’ll come back to me, Paige, because nothing will keep us apart. I won’t accept anything less than forever with you.”

I desperately clung to the feeling of hope he sparked somewhere deep within me, and a genuine small smile spread across my lips at his natural ability to make me swoon with his tender words.

“You promise?” For some unknown reason, I needed his reassurance in this moment.

He bent forward and kissed the tip of my nose. “I promise.”

Synopsis
Rike and Peyton fell in love in college.

A boy from the wrong side of the tracks, covered in ink and crooning in a bar is the last person a straight laced girl with a art major should fall for, but his rough edges made her jagged, alive, shaving away the coddled southern princess and revealing a soul wild and brilliant.

They fell in love, despite her family and his past and all the reasons why it wouldn’t work–and with their best friends, they made a life. Everyone was supposed to live happily ever after.

They, more than anyone, knows that life doesn’t go according to plan.

Rike and Peyton fell in love in college.

A boy with a guitar, and a poet’s heart, and a girl with freckles dusted over her nose, a perfect fucking fairy tale.

But what happens when the fairy tale doesn’t fall apart–but is forgotten?

Prologue: Now

It’s raining buckets and I don’t want to go out in that. I stared at it from under the awning of the club and felt Lindsay sway into me. For a second, we both wobbled and another one of the girls banged against my side and I shrieked, sure we were going down.

Lindsay rights me, pulls me close. I lean my head on her shoulder and puff out a petulant, “Bitch.”

Her grip tightens just a touch and she laughs.

I haven’t been this drunk since senior year of college, when we did Christmas at her parent’s beach house in Key West. I wouldn’t be this drunk now except she begged.

Hung over and washed out wouldn’t do for the wedding, and even after that insane night on the beach with jello shots and beer funnels and tequila body shots, I had woken up without a hang over.

And that’s what you do, when your best friend begs the night before her wedding–you do her shots while the rest of the bridal party screams at the strippers and you slip her watered down beer that smells like piss.

You take the holy fuck never again drunk, because tomorrow, no one will be looking at me while she prances down the aisle in white.

Well.

One person will. And he’d think this shit was hilarious. I giggle against Linds’ shoulder and she bumps me gently. “You good?” She murmurs as we wait for the cab.

I smirk up at her, the world spinning unsteadily. “I’m fucking wasted.”

She laughs softly and kisses my forehead.

“Lindsay, get in,” one of the other girls calls and she peers at the cab. It won’t hold all of us, and I can feel a new tension settle over my best friend.

Lindsay doesn’t have a lot of close friends. Partly because we came here, to this city neither of us knows, because of the boys. So we both started over.

And because when we have each other, and the boys, well. We don’t need much else. But she’s more social than I am. And she works at a small ad agency, where she’s gotten close to the other girls.

So when she needed bridesmaids, of course she asked them.

I smirk as Lindsay shakes her head. “Y’all go. Peyton and I will grab the next.”

There’s a moment of rain splattered quiet and then the girl–I forget but I think she’s one of the Jennifers–shrugs and slides into the little cab, slamming the door behind her.

“What a bitch,” I mutter.

She laughs, that real noise that I know like breathing. Not the fake shit she’s been shoveling at the other girls all night.

“Stop it,” she orders and I blink up at her. “You’re thinking too much. Your drunk, Pey. Let go and enjoy it.”

I lean into her, and murmur, “Wanna help?”

She laughs again, shoving my shoulder, and I giggle. “You are such a slut when you drink.” She mutters.

I nod agreeably, and a cab pulls up. It’s dingy and the driver is frowning at his phone even as it he pulls to a stop. He gives us a distracted look as we spill in and the world sways, dizzy for a long moment. Lindsay tugs me against her as I whimper and pushes my hair back, studying me. “The Embassy Suites,” she says and he nods, jerking into motion.

Linds mutters under her breath and reaches for her seatbelt. “Sit up, honey. Belt. The rain is awful.”

“Freaking mother hen,” I grumble and she shrugs, implacable. I huff and shift to sit up and my phone goes off, the ringtone that only Rike has. I squeal and Lindsay reaches for me as I scramble for my purse, abandoned on the dark, dirty floorboard. I close my hand over it and hear her scream, my name a twisted noise that is almost unrecognizable.

It’s the last thing I can’t remember.

Chapter 1: Before

The bar is riding the line of slow and dead, which is depressing as fuck, because playing to an empty room is always a little bit of a letdown. Scotty doesn’t bitch—he doesn’t give a fuck who listens, as long he has a mic and his guitar with me to back him up.

Scotty could play to an empty room, and still be a happy motherfucker. He’s done it often enough.

Lamar swings by the bar with a fresh round of long neck bottles, and I stand from where I’m adjusting the drums to take it from him.

“Slow night.”

He shrugs. “It’ll pick up. You play, and it always does.”

True. But it’s been months since we had this low a turnout to work with.

Barrie’s is a dive and that’s putting it nicely. It’s a fucking hole in the wall in a college town, and has delusions about which college town it landed in. It wants to be a bigger deal than it is. But it’s our hole in the wall, and Lamar keeps the free beer coming as long as we keep the music playing.

There’s even a sticky dance floor, coated with spilt beer and other things I don’t want to name, and some nights, we manage to draw enough of a crowd that they pack that little floor and scream along to our cover songs.

And there’s another reason we keep coming back. The real reason I keep coming back.

I take a beer and glance at the little booth that sits empty and almost forlorn in the corner. It isn’t usually empty this late on a Thursday night. She’s usually here by now, and the absence strings nerves along my skin, making my foot tap anxiously.

Scotty is watching me, and I shove down the unease as I swallow more of the beer and tap my drums, a quick beat that pulls a low response from the small audience.

He gives them a sexy half smirk and I see a girl at the bar texting. I hit the drums again and he glances back at me. I cock an eyebrow at the girl and he grins, not the smirk he reserves for the audiences, but the shit eating grin I’ve seen on my best friend’s face so many times. The one that promises trouble and good times, and the distinct likelihood of getting laid.

A grin crooks one side of my lips, and I nod at him. Slam my sticks together twice before throwing myself into the beat of a popular summertime anthem.

Scotty follows my lead, crooning about summer and trucks, beer and good times and the girls who are pouring in off the street scream our names.

Scotty lives for this shit. He always has. For the high of the girls and the crowd, the ones who for a few hours make him forget that we’re two months behind on rent. That everything outside the circle of bright lights is a world of shit and heartache.

Because here, it’s not. Here we’re fucking untouchable, and as they sway to our music and the beat I’m keeping with my drum sticks.

He loves this. And I get it. Not because I care about the girls—I do, in a abstract sort of way. I love it because for a few minutes every night, between covering the bullshit on the radio, we roll out a song that no one has heard before. Sometimes, they love it. Sometimes, I come out from behind the drums, and croon to the room, a song that bares my fucking soul, and even  with the lights so bright they’re blinding, I can see her in her little booth, hair pulled up and messy, eyes half lidded as she listens.

It’s the closest I’ve come to talking to her. Because I know better.

A girl like her isn’t meant for me. She’s poise and pearls, peaches and cream skin and private smiles.

I’m covered in ink and scars and hiding from my own fucked up past, and so far below a girl like her that it’s stupid to even consider it.

I do though. Every fucking time I see that tiny smile when I sing.

She doesn’t know I write for her. But I do. It’s the only way I’ve allowed myself to talk to her. At night, when Scotty and I stumble home drunk and high off the performance, when one of the barflies don’t end up in bed between us and—sometimes—on the nights when one does.

Scotty changes the rhythm and I shift, matching him as he slides into a ballad, crooning to the crowd. A group of sorority girls in a uniform outfit of tiny shorts, hooker heels, and tops that flash smooth curves are on the dance floor, writhing and singing along, and I wonder which Scotty will tap to come home with us.

She isn’t coming in. It’ll be the first Thursday night in almost three months that she hasn’t been here and it bugs me. I want her here.

Even knowing how bad an idea it is, how different we are—I want her here.

I miss a beat, stumbling on the rift and Scotty sends me a sharp glance, kicking in with a solo to cover me. I shake my head once, and he shifts his attention back to the crowd as we give in to the music.

It’s the third song of the second set, when I’ve shoved her out of my mind almost completely, that the door swings open, and she stalks in.

She’s out of place in a blue sundress and white sweater, an oversized bag at her side, her long red hair swirling around her face in a halo of angry curls.

She’s fucking gorgeous and the sudden release of tension is almost dizzying.

And right then, I decide. Fuck all the reasons it’s a bad idea. I’m tired of giving a shit about that. She can shoot me down if she wants—but first I’m going to give myself a shot.

***

“You’re girl was late,” Scotty rasps as we land on two stools at the bar. It’s late and the crowd of sorority girls has thinned to almost nothing, although a pair are nursing Cosmos and watching us speculatively.

Surprisingly, Scott’s ignored them completely.

“Need anything, boys?” Manda asks as she sways past, giving Scotty a flirty smile. He grins at her, letting his gaze sweep over her.

My best friend is a fucking slut. But with Manda, it’s all flirting and no action. She’d take him up on it—she’s made that very clear. But Scot doesn’t fuck where he works, and Barrie’s has been too good for us to risk screwing it up for a quick fuck.

Which is good, because I’d have to kick his ass if he touched her. She might be a little too friendly and a little desperate, but she’s a cute kid and I like her.

“Bourbon, Manda,” he says and she glances at me questioningly. I nod and she pours the drinks. Scotty glances at me. “What are you waiting on?”

I shrug and grit my teeth. Scotty twists and gives her a look over his shoulder. “Fine. Stay here and keep Manda company. I’m going to introduce myself to your siren.”

I jerks him back by the collar of his shirt before he can take more than two steps and throw him back against the bar. “Back the fuck off, Scott.” I growl.

He grins, a challenge and a taunt in that expression. “Then make your move, Rike.”

I snatch the bourbon from Manda and take a deep breath before walking to her table.

And wait.

For a long. Fucking. Time.

It takes almost a full minute for her to look up, almost long enough for my courage to fail. I’m  ready to retreat when she blinks and looks up at me, her blue eyes widening a little as they find mine. She looks startled, and sleepy, and as gorgeous as she looked at a distance, is nothing compared to how fucking flawless she is this close.

There are freckles sprinkled across her cheeks and dusted over her nose.

I swallow a groan as she licks her lips and gives me a tentative smile. “Hi.”

“Hi,” I say, and then go blank.

Because in none of my fantasies did I ever consider we’d actually ever get to this point. And the smirks and smooth lines won’t work—not on her.

“What do you call a group of unorganized cats?” I ask and her eyes cloud, confused.

She gives me a pretty frown and I grin, “A cat-astrophe.”

For a second, all either of us do is stare, and then she giggles. “That is literally the worst pickup line I’ve ever heard.”

I grin, “So you want me to leave?”

Laughter dances in her eyes. “Have a seat, jokes.”

My heart shoves up into my throat at the casual nickname and invitation but I keep my cool smile in place as I slide into the booth across from her. She pecks at the computer a few more times, and then twists it aside and reaches for her drink—a whiskey neat.

She normally drinks for vodka cranberry, and I’ve fantasized about kissing that taste from her lips. My dick twitches and she watches me over the rim of her glass, lazy interest in her dark eyes.

“Y’all sounded good tonight,” she offers.

My lips tick up into a grin, “As opposed to most nights?”

A flush crawls up her cheeks. “No! You always sound good. I’m just—“

I laugh, and lean back in the booth. Her adorable embarrassment is too easy to provoke. “I’m kidding, Red. Relax.”

“So how did you get involved in this? The band?”

“Scotty needed backup and it was fun. Something to keep me out of trouble. Neither of us are very good at doing shit without the other.” I say, skirting away from just how true that is and how fucking co-dependent we can be.

“That’s cute,” she says, grinning.

“Yeah?”

“Guys don’t usually do the whole BFF bullshit—not like girls. It’s kinda cute to see a couple of dudes who are good friends.”

There’s a little part of me that wants to point out that we aren’t BFFs. That we were forced together out of necessity and kept together to survive. But I don’t. That’s a little heavy for now, and I don’t particularly want her thinking about my best friend at the moment anyway.

“So what are you doing here?” I ask, leaning forward and tapping the open laptop. “Most girls like you find a library to study in.”

Her eyes narrow a little, and I get the feeling I’m wandering into dangerous territory. “Girls like me?”

Her tone is tight and full of warning, but I ignore it, offering her a lazy grin. “Pretty. Smart. Too damn good to be in this shithole.”

Her lips twitch and I lean forward, into her space a little and whisper. “You’ve been here for months, Red. Distracting and out of place. So tell me. Why the hell do you keep coming back?”

Her eyes are wide and her breath is coming in short sharp bursts and if I lean forward another few inches, I could taste the lips I’ve spent months fixating on.

“I like the music,” she murmurs and I swallow my groan, because fuck if that isn’t the most perfect answer in the world.

“And the computer?”

A flush flares up her cheeks again and she ducks away. I lean back, giving her room as I take a pull on my beer. She’s fiddling with the swizzle stick that came in her drink.

“I write sometimes. And the music is the perfect inspiration.”

I was wrong. She could say something more perfect. I grin at her and say, “You might just be perfect.”

“Might?”

I hesitate and then shrug. “Need a little longer to figure that out, Red.”

Her eyes are still amused but a little wary as she watches me, a finger circling the rim of her glass, catching the drop of whiskey from her last sip. She lifts it and licks the Jack away, and I swallow hard, chasing my groan away with a cough. “Go out with me,” I say, suddenly.

“I don’t date,” she says immediately. She leans back and I want to drag her back to the edge of her seat, force her back into the easy warmth we were sharing even as she slams walls up between us.

“Why not?” I ask.

“Because I’m busy and because boys are idiots and because school—I don’t need to be distracted.”

“You aren’t too busy to drop by and listen to me play every week for three months. And I’m not a fucking boy,” I says the last bit tighter and fiercer.

Her breath catches a little in her throat as she licks her lips. “Maybe I’m here for Scotty.”

For the first time in almost two decades, I want to punch my best friend. Because fuck if he’s going to get this girl too, after all the time I’ve spent watching her. I’ve never cared who Scot takes to bed. Usually we take them together—women are no different than any other thing in our world. But the thought of him touching her, or her on her knees in front of him. It makes me irrationally angry.

“Rike,” a sweet low voice purrs behind me and I blink free of my thoughts to twist and meet the gaze of the girl behind me. She’s all smooth curves and long blonde hair and legs for fucking days.

She went home with us a few week ago, and I knew even as she was in bed with us that it was going to be a problem.

“Scotty is flying solo,” I say, turning back to Red. I can feel the sorority girl at my back, the indignant fury from her. Red is watching her with curious eyes, gaze skirting between the two of us. I ignore the huffy girl behind me and say, “You aren’t. If you were, you wouldn’t be talking to me.”

Her eyes flicker with reserved amusement, and I lean forward, and whisper, “Please. Save me from the sorority.”

Her lips curve into a slow smile, something mischievous and mysterious in the twist of her lips, and I want to see that smile every day. I want to know why it’s different, and what makes it different from the smile she would give me half asleep and naked in my bed.

I blink, shake the thought. Focus on now.

God, she’s fucking with my head, hard.

“Go find a new toy, Lindsay. This one is mine tonight.”

That’s what her name was. Lindsay.

“You’ll like them,” Lindsay says, a smirk in her voice, and Red’s eyes slip past me, settling on the girl and hardening.

Fuck. That’s jealousy, and a part of me wants to fucking crow with victory.

Instead, I reach out and claim her hand, letting my fingers trace over the curl of her palm, bringing her attention back to me as I absently caress her hand. She watches me curiously for a moment.

“Friday. Pick me up.” She reclaims her hand and scribbles on a note card, sliding it across to me. Then she grabs her bag, shoving her laptop inside as she slides out of the booth and across the bar. She stops Lindsay, and murmurs something to the blonde girl.

Curious, assessing eyes flick to me, but Lindsay only nods and turns away from me. Red smiles, and ducks out of the bar.

I glance down at the note card. Her handwriting is messy and strong.

And her name is Peyton.

Chapter 2: After

Sometimes, the loneliness

Is a physical blanket,

A tangible thing that wraps around me,

Like a suffocating  wave that won’t recede.

And then your hand,

Rescues me.

(Rike’s poems to Peyton)

Noise. Quiet, steady, noise. It breaks the silence, shrill and sharp, then gone and it’s just a waiting silence. My eyes open, slow and painful, and I look at a fuzzing white ceiling, and the bright silver of a pole near my head.

Why the hell is there a pole near my head?

I open my lips to talk, to ask and a body, one I hadn’t noticed before, shifts in the corner.

The nurse looks at me brilliant blue eyes, and for a moment, I can’t remember what I was going to ask, because there is only his eyes and the questions there, and a scruffy beard, sharp angled face, and long hair that hangs in disarray like he’s been pushing his fingers through it.

“You’re awake,” he says, and I remember that I was asking a question.

But I can’t remember what it was. I think, struggling to hold on to the elusive question and my eyes widen, panic slamming into me. Beside me, the shrill and sharp noise of the monitor that woke me screams to life as my heartbeat slams in my chest.

I can’t remember anything.

***

It takes a sedative to calm me down, and when I wake, it’s slowly, with no idea of where I am. It’s dark—and I remember the light streaming into the room earlier, lighting his ice blue eyes, and the wild panic when I realized everything was a blank slate.

I feel it again, now, but the panic tamer, not as sharp and choking. I shift to sit up in the hospital bed, and glance around.

My gaze lands on the nurse, sleeping in a chair in the corner. His hand is wrapped around a phone, and I wonder, inanely, if he sleeps in all of his patient’s rooms, or if I’m special.

Tattoos snake under the pushed up cuffs of a long, silver blue thermal, and I have the absurd desire to push them up and see what designs will be revealed.

I don’t even like guys with tattoos.

Why is he here? I clear my throat, and his eyes fly open. For a moment, his eyes are sleepy, soft, so intimate it makes the breath catch in my throat, and I swallow hard. Then he blinks, and the hungry emotions are tucked away, and there is only concern there, calm and professional as he pushes out of the chair and comes to the bed.

“How are you feeling?” he asks, glancing at the machine briefly. His eyes flick over it, and his lips tighten before he reaches for a button.

I stop his hand with my own, and see his eyes flare wide, before he closes them, and with a deep breath pulls away from me.

Stung, and strangely embarrassed, I tuck my hand back under my blanket. “Where am I?” I ask my voice shaky with disuse.

How long have I been here, how long have I been unconscious?

“St. David’s Medical Center.” He waits, watching for some sign of recognition, and then adds, “Austin, sweetheart.”

Austin. Why the hell am I in Austin?

“Where would you rather be?” he asks, his voice carefully neutral.

I blink. I hadn’t realized I’d spoken aloud until he responded, and I feel heat crawling up my neck. His eyes drop to it, and heat, and I clear my throat, looking away. Searching for an answer to his question.

Where would I rather be?

It’s a blank page, my past empty, stretching behind me. For how long? I bite hard on my lip. “How long have I been here?”

“I think you should let me call the doctor.”

“Why can’t I remember anything?” I whisper, and tears sting my eyes. I blink hard, and sniffle. He’s staring at me, his face tight and remote, and I want him gone, suddenly. I want just a minute, to break down in private. Away from this stranger with his tattoos and eyes that see too much.

“Can you call the doctor? And maybe give me a minute?”

He inhales sharply, and I feel a flare of guilt, inexplicably. Then he nods, and steps away from my bed. “Of course. Give me a few minutes to find him. If you need anything—“

“I’ll call the nurse,” I say and he nods.

I don’t know who he is. Why he’s here. Why he looks so strangely hurt by my behavior.

“Do I know you?” I ask, hesitantly.

His whole body seems to tense, and I want to reach out and touch him, to soothe the tight line of his shoulders.

A tattoo is licking up his neck, a bird in flames, just visible over the collar of his scrubs.

“I’ll be back with the doctor,” he says hoarsely.

And then he’s gone, and any answers he might have are gone with him.

It stings a little. Like I should know him, or why he was here—and I don’t.

Why the hell am I a hospital in Austin? Why aren’t my parents here?

Every memory I reach for is blank. A space where something should be but nothing is. It’s like who I am has vanished. The doctor is a Haitian man with skin the color of midnight and a wide smile. And an accent so thick I almost can’t understand him as he explains.

The nurse—not tattooed blue eyes—gives me a notebook, and when the doctor leaves again to find my MRI scans, I write what I know.

I was brought in from a car crash two weeks ago.

I had traumatic brain injury, causing memory loss.

Apparently, I was drunk before the accident and that didn’t help my mental functions at all.

The girl with me is still in critical condition.

Her license says she is Lindsay Murphy and I am Peyton Collins.

I live in Austin.

It’s not nearly enough for me to work with—to build a life on.  But it’s all I’ve got, so it’s going to have to do. What bothers me isn’t that I can’t remember. It’s that I’m alone here.

What the hell kind of life was I living, that I am so fucking alone?

The door opens, and Tattooed Blue Eyes enters with a paper bag. He eyes me for a minute, and I stare back silently.

A tiny grin turns his lips, and he comes deeper into the room sitting down in a chair near my bed.

“Knock knock,” he says, and waits, staring at me.

I frown, “Who’s there?”

“Hatch.”

“Hatch who?” I ask, exasperated.

The grin blossoms into a full smile, “Cover your mouth when you sneeze!”

I giggle and shake my head. “That’s really bad, Blue eyes.”

His grin falters, for just a second and then he shrugs. “But you laughed. Now. Are you hungry?”

I don’t respond, and he doesn’t seem to care, going to work pulling out a plate of fried rice and chicken with vegetables and spreading it all out on the table. He moves easily, almost ignoring me, but I can feel the tiny glances he darts at me.

“What are you doing?” I ask, when the plate is in my hands and he’s back in his chair. The sleeves of his thermal have been shoved up, and I see stairs crisscrossing up his arm, and a brightly colored fish on his other, twisting through weeds and flowers.

“I’m eating dinner with you.” He says. Pauses, “Do you want me to go?”

That possibility looms in front of me. All night, alone in this room, and nothing. No memories or knowledge to keep me company.

The thought is terrifying and I shake my head. Because whoever he is, he’s a distraction. Someone to keep my mind off the emptiness.

“No,” I whisper. “Please stay.”

Excerpt
Help me get a grip, I’m melting into her eyes… He took a beat to compose himself.

“What would you like me to do Sarah?” he asked.

She moved closer and parted her lips.

I’m going, going

“I think I’d like you to kiss me now.”

Gone…

On tiptoe and cradling the back of his head, she guided him to her.

No one could surprise him in the love department except Sarah Dupont. He skimmed his hands over the outline of her soft curves and pulled her in tighter. She tasted like cabernet and cake, and he closed his eyes so he could savor her lips.

A low moan escaped her, and hit him in the gut. He didn’t know where to start with his hands and moved them over the sexy arch of her back and pressed her closer to him.

“The tree,” he said quickly, not wanting to be away from her mouth. “Does the tree hurt your back?”

“Don’t stop kissing me,” she said. The need in Sarah’s voice surprised him, making him strain against his jeans. He fought to slow down, to wait, to catch a breath before he lost it.

He swept his lips across her cheek. “Sarah.” When he reached her earlobe, he nipped. She felt luscious and pliable in his arms. He almost couldn’t handle listening to her quick breaths and the feeling of her heart pumping so fast against him.

“Sarah.” He nuzzled behind her ear, kissing and sucking her neck. “Don’t make me stop.”

She groaned between breaths.

He felt drunk, but he’d had only had a few glasses of wine. Touching, kissing and listening to her whimpers made him feel like he could tip over any minute and bury himself into her.

Excerpt
“I didn’t even say anything.”

“Didn’t have to.” He stops at the deck, just feet from the front door. I have to back up a step to keep from literally stepping on his toes. “You get away with a lot with me because of shit you don’t even understand. I’ll tolerate whatever crap you want to throw my way as long as you remember your place with the club and with my brother.”

“I don’t understand.” I feel like I’ve been dropped into the conversation halfway through because I’m pretty much lost now.

“He likes you,” is his blunt explanation. When my eyebrows pull together in confusion he shakes his head and purses his lips like he’s thinking about what he wants to say. “More than likes you. Don’t take it for granted and don’t fuck it up. He chose you and I respect that, but make no mistake about it, babe. You do him dirty and you’ll answer to me.” I narrow my eyes and he leans in closer. His rank breath washes over my face.

“I won’t hesitate to slit your fucking throat if you fuck my brother over.”

I tilt my chin up, closer to his ear and lean in so we’re chest to chest. He’s taller than me by several inches, but I don’t care. He’s going to hear what I have to say and that’s all that matters.

“Threatening somebody with death only works if they’re afraid of dying.” I say the words slowly and with purpose, meaning every single one. If he wanted to scare me, he should have threatened to take away something that matters to me—like Ian.

Black Dawn (Titan Series #6) by Cristin Harber

Black Dawn (Titan Series #6) by Cristin Harber

5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis

Black Dawn can be read as a standalone and does not have a cliffhanger.

——————————————————–

My Review
The Titan Series is my guilty pleasure. Imagine your favorite thriller with a steamy romance as a co-plot? That’s what you get with the Titan Series, and Black Dawn is no exception. Lexi is an elite hacker, involved in an abusive relationship. She’s created a unique software program and selling it to the highest bidder. Parker Black is Titan, with a head for analysis and an eye for Lexi. When things in Lexi’s private life take a dangerous turn, Parker steps in, and gets caught up in the middle of a potentially international incident, with Lexi’s software at the center.

Plot
There are two solid plots — the romance between Parker and Lexi, and the mystery and intrigue surrounding Monarch, Lexi’s software. Both are exceptionally well done. Cristin Harber builds suspense and heat, weaving them together, like no other single author I can think of.

Characters
Parker’s my second-favorite Titan, Cash still holds that top spot. Parker’s tough, smart, and his inability to explain his feelings makes him endearing. Lexi is about as complex as they come. She was all over the place and at times I felt she was so out of character, but that double-sided, lost-and-found Lexi was such a part of her identity, part of her growth and development as the story unfolded. Some of the Titan cast made cameos but not nearly enough for me. A few new characters that were introduced were interesting, especially Shadow, and even Matt, as much as I loathed him.

World Building
The world building is Titan at it’s best –black ops, high-tech goodies, armored vehicles, and total badassery.

Ending
Harber has a way of building up the suspense, taking us to a pinnacle of danger and action, and Black Dawn is exactly what I was hoping it would be.

Top Five Things I loved about Black Dawn:
1. Bacon Byte. Come on, a little wrinkly snoring pudge of a pug named Bacon is about as cute as it gets.

2. Parker. He’s hot, tough, smart, really the trifecta of male perfection.

3. Hacking. Never has computer hacking been so sexy.

4. Office sex. ‘Nuf said.

5. Shadow. Lexi’s colleague is the father figure every girl should have.

Bottom Line
The latest in the Titan Series delivers danger, adventure, and steamy romance as only Cristin Harber can.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

There was zero chance of survival—for either of us.

The thought caused my insides to twist as I stood, paralyzed staring at the blazing inferno. I watched in shocked horror from the window of the control tower as the jetfueled flames fed on his body, still strapped inside of the cockpit.

Tonight the distant flames were from a bonfire that danced happily in celebration of a holiday, but their flames were close enough to ignite the memories. Memories that still fueled my nightmares. A familiar chill skated down my spine.

I slammed down the beer bottle on the table next to me and looked away from the flames. Sweet honey lager splashed out and onto the cover of my tablet that sat on the edge of the table.

The tablet called to me. I couldn’t help but reach for it, my shaking hand nearly knocked over the beer bottles that surrounded it. My index finger hovered over the screen. The damn arrow glowed as if challenging me to touch it.

Go ahead Tink, watch me one more time.

I swallowed the boulder-sized lump in the back of my throat as I accepted the dare. My finger tapped the start button and instantly dropped me in the middle of the nightmare that had consumed and wrecked my life.

“Altitude. Altitude. Pull up. Pull up.” The unemotional, mechanical female voice of the jet’s warning system rang out.

Her words rattled in my head like a pinball looking for its escape. I studied the altimeter screaming toward two thousand feet.

“Pull up,” her empty voice commanded. Each time she repeated those words, my stomach lurched. That voice, that command, still haunted me.

I squeezed my eyes closed unable to stop from reliving that day in the tower and how her robotic tone had sent everyone into a panic. I stood frozen, unable to do a damn thing as the jet continued its nosedive.

My own weight crushed me as if I were being pushed down by the forces of a hard turn in the cockpit. I gasped for oxygen, my lungs rebelling as the image of the jet pitched down. I began counting between breaths to keep from passing out the way they had taught us in pilot training.

Three.

The sound of calm breaths from video filled the air. The ground rushed closer as the jet blitzed toward fifteen hundred feet.

“Pull up,” the voice repeated. “Pull up.”

Two.

I leaned forward and my lips parted as if I were going to retch, but nothing spilled out. I forced each breath to prevent me from blacking out like Colin. His calm, sleeplike breaths seeped from the tablet’s speakers, haunting me in its wavelike rhythm. I held the tablet tight in my hands. The breaths were the last sound that I’d ever hear from him.

“Pull up! Pull up!”

A giant green arrow flashed across the video. It acted as a forewarning of the jet’s impending impact. My entire body shuddered as adrenaline thrust through my veins.

I wanted to choke the aloofness from her tone. To the jet’s warning system it was just another jet. To me, it was my world coming to an end. She may as well have tacked the word ‘idiot’ onto her feeble attempt of a warning.

The military Humvees scrambled on the screen like cockroaches escaping the light. I was paralyzed. I couldn’t do anything to prevent it from happening then. Why did I still hope I could stop it now?

“Pull up!”

I closed my eyes.

It was too late.

“Pull up!”

One.

I opened my eyes. The ground rush on the display was exactly how they described it in pilot training; the world blossomed as earth ripped through to meet you in the cockpit.

Her vacant voice instructing him to pull up was the last thing to ring out right before my life shattered. Everything exploded into a bright blinding haze on the screen with a blaring detonation. The blood cooled in my veins. I flipped the tablet cover and traced my still trembling finger along the lines of the worn material. I had stolen the video from my father’s files the night after the funeral. I had watched it a thousand times, each time reliving the horrors of that day.

But tonight, once was enough.

Tonight, I had to figure out how the hell I was going to climb into the cockpit and fly the jet that killed my brother.

* * * *

The annual Fourth of July fireworks filled the sky right on cue. Red sparks showered down as the blue lights twirled across the backdrop of an onyx sky. It used to be our favorite family tradition.

A wave of guilt washed over me then pooled deep in the pit of my belly. How was it fair that I was standing here watching the fireworks, while Colin was buried six feet deep?

The reflection of the flashing lights off the ocean blinded me. High pitched screams and loud blasts shook the windows behind me as I leaned on the banister of my deck, watching the show, alone. The silver ones that whistled were Colin’s favorite.

My heart pounded at the thought of my tenderhearted brother. I squeezed my eyes tightly together to try to force out tears, but nothing fell. Not a single drop. I had cried so much that I had become numb to the pain.

My phone vibrated in my back pocket, interrupting the fireworks display. The ringtone of magical chimes followed. I sighed loudly—this was not a call I wanted to take.

Ignoring my mom wouldn’t make her go away. It would only make her more determined. It was like she had a beacon implanted in my brain to know when I was thinking about my Colin’s accident. I pulled my phone from the back pocket of my cutoff jeans and growled.

Pink 1 flashed across the screen.

My thumb hovered over the ‘Off’ button, but I couldn’t bring myself to press it.

She would know that I had dismissed her call. My mother knew everything, except when I didn’t want to talk, or maybe she knew, but that still wouldn’t stop her until she ‘heard my voice’. It had gotten even worse since Colin’s death.

A chime alerted the arrival of a new text message.

I forced myself to look at the screen and read the words—He loved you.

I let out a long drawn out breath. Her words were always the same.

I picked up the bottle of sweet brown lager and gulped it. All of it. I reached for another. I twisted off the lid, and spun the tiny metal cap across the deck. I wanted to feel Colin’s pain and grief for a life he’d never have. But I couldn’t shed any more tears. I was empty. Broken. There was nothing left of me. The only thing that kept me putting one foot in front of the other was the determination to prove that his death was not due to pilot error. I would prove it, or die trying.

The phone buzzed again.

Pink 1.

I swallowed another drink before I surrendered and answered the call. “Hey, Mom.” I said, my voice higher than usual in a failed attempt to mask my misery.

“You okay?” she asked with her usual cautious tone.

“Yeah, I’m great. I’m heading to Krusty’s for dinner,” I lied. “Can I call you tomorrow?”

“I wanted to hear your voice, sweetie, and wish you luck.”

Luck? I needed a helluva lot more than luck. Tomorrow, I started training to fly the jet that cremated my brother.

“Thanks, I’m excited,” I said as another lie slipped off my tongue. It was becoming easier to fib to my mother. They just popped out one after another. I was never dishonest as a child, but now it felt like I never told anyone the truth. “I’m looking forward to getting started.” The words sounded sweet, but I’d need another lager to wash out the bitter taste. So much for being a pillar of honesty.

“Oh, Tinklee, you are such a liar,” my mother said. “I know you’re nervous. Who wouldn’t be? I’ll be there, in spirit, and so will he.” Her voice was warm and tender, as if she were smiling through her tears. She sniffled loudly. She was okay with her tears.

“Okay, I’m losing the connection. I gotta go.”

“I can tell you don’t want to talk so I won’t keep you. I’ll see you soon. And remember sweetie, keep your circle—”

“Stop Mom, I’m twenty-two, enough with the positive affirmations.”

She ignored my plea, “If you keep your circle positive, you’ll attract good Karma.”

I rolled my eyes and held back a sigh out of respect to the woman who spent thirty-six hours in labor for me.

“Besides, age doesn’t matter. I love you, baby girl. You’ll always be my little Tinklee,” she said. Her voice danced when she emphasized ‘little’ and ‘Tinklee.’

I couldn’t help but cringe. She’d screwed me with that one.

A blond-haired, blue-eyed fighter pilot trying to make it in a man’s world couldn’t be taken seriously with the name Tinklee Pinkerton.

Good job, Mom. You rock.

Now that she knows about the underground revolution—and the dark secrets of her own past—Aurelia is hell-bent on escaping the government’s watchful gaze and joining the rebels. Finally, she’s found a cause worth fighting for. A way for her kind, the Norms, to take back their freedom.

Then, when she overhears a Triumvirate official’s conversation, she learns that it’s even worse than she realized. The government knows about the rebels, and the rebellion. They’re searching for people who sympathize with the cause. And they’re coming after her next.

Suddenly the time for dreaming about the rebellion is over. Aurelia must make contact with the rebels and plot a quick escape … before the Triumvirate has a chance to capture her. But government forces and miles of monster-filled wilderness stand between her and the rebel headquarters, and dangers she never imagined lurk in the shadows.

Before she can fight for the freedom of her people, she must achieve her own—or die trying.

Synopsis
The love that lies built?

Wine importer London Whitley dots her I’s and crosses her T’s. Her meticulous nature insulates her from fears that she might just be crazy, as in certifiably, medically nuts.

When her almost ex-boyfriend winds up dead at her hands and she’s soon accused of importing counterfeit wines, London’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble. There’s help to be had, but only in the form of an imposing stranger who threatens her ruin.

Trevor Rathlen is lucky to have escaped his marriage to a murderess alive and merely indebted to men who think the exquisite London Whitley’s innocence is a façade.

A computer security specialist by day and hacker by night, Trevor agrees to return the favor owed by learning London’s secrets. The task should be an easy one, except Trevor is short on trust, London is long on lies, and together they battle an infinite attraction.

——————————————————–

Excerpt
Lowering her car window, London baited a trap. “Hacked my e-mail, did you?” Right. More like he’d gone where her sister had directed—for a price—first her gym, now her job. “How’d you manage that?”

He wouldn’t have a clue.

Looking harassed, Trevor said, “Phishing software. You really shouldn’t change your password every time you receive a remotely authentic-looking e-mail saying your info’s been stolen. Half the time that stuff comes from the bad guys.”

“Like you?”

“No.” The man smiled more like a shark than a paid seducer. “I hack for the good of mankind, usually.”

She sat in silence. An e-mail had come the day before. Very official-looking, it had explained that numerous servers had been compromised and asked users to immediately change their passwords to protect sensitive information. Always the responsible citizen, London had clicked the link provided in the message and complied.

“London?” he prompted.

“Why bother? Clara could have told you where I’d be.”

“Clara?”

“My sister,” she said slowly, emphasizing the association, “the one paying you?”

Trever made a noise that sounded like the “wrong answer” buzzer on a game show. “Try again.” Approaching the passenger side, he began tapping the window with the padded chiller. “Unlock the doors, London.”

She did, grudgingly.

The chiller slid across the back seat before Trevor joined her in the front of her little sedan. The interior barely accepted his big frame, and he folded himself inside, one limb at a time. “Would you like some dinner before we discuss this wine situation?” He spoke as casually as one could when imitating origami. “You probably need food after ingesting what amounts to a toxic substance.”

Three times he’d tried to take care of her in as many days. As far as paid companions went, she imagined this meant going the extra mile. Yet London wouldn’t let her sister literally buy her a dinner conversation. Desperation needn’t sink so low.

“I’m not hungry,” she finally said.

“You look hungry.”

“What, exactly, does hungry look like?” Because, as her mother would say, London was not it.

“You swallow more often and shift in your seat. When you think I’m distracted, you lick your lips. Inside, I saw you eyeing the nuts. You would have eaten some if you hadn’t been laser-focused on the poisoned fruit.”

London sat purposefully still with her arms crossed, engine idling. “You can keep the money. I’ll tell Clara—and if it wasn’t Clara, which I doubt, then I’ll tell whoever hired you—that you showed me a good time. The best.”

Trevor tweaked a knee and sighed. “That’s not how it works, angel.” His face fell into implacable lines. “I want to believe you don’t have anything to do with the counterfeits, but as this is a private investigation, you’re pretty much guilty until proven innocent. You show me you’re not a problem to my satisfaction”—he lingered on the last—“and I’ll show you a good time. You can bet it will be the best.”

Counterfeits? The physical awareness London had been fighting drowned in a rising flood of adrenaline. Trevor kept talking, a garbled mess that pressed against her ears but didn’t enter. Reaching out, she gripped the wheel with shaking hands and whispered, “You’re not an escort.”

The indistinct roar coming from Trevor came to an immediate stop, and London couldn’t help but drink in the silence. Squeezing the rubber beneath her fingers, she took a breath and counted—five, four, three… Before the air ran out, she glanced at her passenger.

Trevor’s mouth had compressed into a thin line, and yet above, she saw humor simmering where she habitually spied intolerance.

“Say that again?” he asked quietly.

“My sister didn’t…?” Pay you to up my excitement quotient? “You aren’t—?”

“A gigolo?” he finished. “A gentleman of the evening? A prostitute? A card-carrying member of the Thunder from Down Under?”

A squeak whistled through her restrained exhale. “No,” she said, “you’re none of those things.”

“Angel, the only thing I do for money is computers.” He dug into his pants pocket and fished out a leather wallet. Soon a crisp business card sailed across the car and landed in her lap. “Things like network construction, firewalls, data storage and retrieval. You get the picture.” He didn’t mention anything sinister, but his earlier admission about infiltrating her e-mail told her his list of professional accomplishments extended beyond run-of-the-mill data management.

More like data theft.

“Rathlen Cyber,” she read. The logo on the card featured a padlocked computer and a brain, an obvious nod to computer security. Definitely not sex for hire. London cringed. “Can we forget about the last few minutes?”

Can love be more than a four-letter word?

Lissa Blanc is a painter on a mission. She filters the world through a lens of color, line, and form and hides her ambition behind a delicate smirk that lets her critics believe life comes easy. To her, art isn’t what she sees. It’s what she feels. Few know that behind the glitz of a prodigious upbringing, she’s driven to emerge from the shadow of painful memories that insist she’ll never be a renowned talent in her own right.

Cole Rathlen is a photographer on the mend. A crippling grief has stifled his once-rising career and compromised his creative instincts. Knowing he can’t stagnate forever, he seeks a twisted absolution in the form of a woman whose paintings give life to the emotions he won’t let himself imagine, let alone feel.

When the two partner for a prestigious project that will pull them from the mountains of Colorado to the palaces of India, Lissa quickly realizes that more than diverging ideals hinder their search for success and salvation. Was Cole’s life upended by a tragic but unavoidable choice or something more sinister? While Lissa can’t delve into the mystery but not the man, Cole can’t resist a tenacious soul that refuses to leave him chained. As the truth closes in on a project finally sprouting wings, will Lissa sacrifice her chance at success to set Cole free? Excerpt #1
After saying goodbye to her mother, Alina and I get in our cars and drive back to my apartment. I stop at the taco place on the way and bring back a dozen tacos. When we get inside, Alina takes one look at them and says, “Good Lord, Mr. Hungry. How many are you planning on eating?”

“However many you don’t eat,” I answer with a grin.

She rolls her eyes. “Typical.” She places two on her plate. “Don’t think this means you get to have the other ten. I might have one more.”

“I’ll save it for you.” We take our food to the living room and sit on the couch. I turn on the TV. “Anything you want to watch? I have basic cable, but I’m sure we could find something.”

She shrugs. “Doesn’t really matter to me.”

I scroll until I find a Nash Bridges rerun. I raise an eyebrow at her and she nods, so I leave it and start eating. At the first commercial break, I hit the mute button and turn to her. “So…if we’re going to be friends, we need to know a little more about each other.”

“Like what?”

“Well, I know your name is Alina Lyons. And you used to work at a diner. And you were friends with Victoria since senior year in high school. But I don’t really know anything else.”

“So, are we going to play twenty questions?” she asks, a smirk playing across her lips.

I make a funny face at her and smile. “No. Let’s just go over some of the basics.”

She wipes her mouth with a napkin and sets down her plate on the coffee table. “Okay, I’ll bite. What kind of basics?”

“Okay, so Nash Bridges—better or worse than Miami Vice?”

She giggles. “Well, they both have Don Johnson, so that alone makes them tied. I am partial to Nash Bridges, though. I used to watch it with my dad and brother growing up.”

Interesting. A girl near my age who actually knows about sitcoms from the eighties and nineties. I can’t remember the last time I was able to talk to someone outside my family who’s familiar with shows that didn’t premiere in their teenage years. Most of my peers were more interested in the latest X-Men movie or who was voted off last night on American Idol. Not that I didn’t care about “teenager” things, I just had a broader spectrum of taste. “Well played…but,” I say, pausing to hold up a finger, “you forgot to mention Yasmine Bleeth.”

“I didn’t forget. I’m surprised that part matters to you when she doesn’t run in slow motion in a red bathing suit on Nash Bridges.”

Not to mention a girl who’s cheeky to boot by referencing Baywatch. “She doesn’t have to. That’s the beauty of it.” I wink and she laughs, shaking her head and covering her face. “You know what, Alina?”

“What?” she asks, peeking through her fingers.

“I think I’m going to like being friends with you.”

The Fates believe she is the symbol of a new era. Her mother believes she is the key to ultimate power in their Greek circle. And Nix, her godfather and god of the sea, believes she belongs to him.

Ivy doesn’t want any part of her world or the people that demand so much of her. With the help of Ryder Sutton, her closest friend, she will fight against fate, against the expectations of her society and against the desires of a monster that will do anything to possess her.

And through it all she will deny her feelings for the one person she loves more than anything in order to protect him.

Synopsis
“One of the best romances I’ve read this year!” — New York Times Bestselling Author J.S. Scott

The Other Sullivan Brother’s Happily Ever After…

The standalone follow-up novel (no cliffhanger) to the Sullivan Brothers “NiceGirl” serial trilogy that began the acclaimed New York Times, USA Today, and worldwide bestselling CAN’T RESIST series

Brian Sullivan has been in love twice in his lifetime. He lost his first love to early-onset Huntington’s, and he lost the other more recently…to his brother. And somehow, his heart has managed to heal itself after both. Amazingly, without therapy. That doesn’t mean Brian hasn’t gotten more wary along the way, however. In fact, he’s been thinking lately that maybe his brother’s now retired nothing-but-flings rule isn’t such a bad idea. Unfortunately, being the nice guy poster boy and all, he isn’t exactly versed in the fine art of flings. So he looks to the outrageously ‘unique,’ provokingly button-pushing Tessa Daniels for a crash course.

There’s absolutely no way he’s falling in love with this one…right?

Tessa has no idea what she was thinking telling Brian that she was some sort of fling expert. She’s never been flung before and she sure as heck doesn’t know where or how to begin flinging a guy like Brian. It was a temporary lapse in sanity, really–no doubt because of the can’t-help-but-fall-for-him brain fuzz that hits her whenever he’s around. Not only does the man have her being more herself than she’s ever been in her life, but he’s the only person she knows who seems to have as many demons and skeletons in the closet as she does. What’s more, he’s got her thinking of the one thing she stopped letting herself even hope for years ago.

——————————————————–

Excerpt
The door slammed shut behind Brian, cloaking them in darkness.

“You drive me crazy, you know that?”

God, his voice had dropped even lower, to a sexy thunder down under rumble.

“Crazy in a good way or a bad way?” Tessa managed to ask, the lack of light making her eyes laser in on his every movement.

“Both.” He circled slowly around her as if she were a dangerous animal…he was getting ready to pounce on. “You have no filter whatsoever. Not with what you do or say, and especially not with how you react.”

“That’s not my fault. You can just point that finger at yourself, buddy,” she grumbled back before snapping her mouth shut.

Alright, so maybe he was right about the filter thing.

“What?”

Man, if looks could strip. She’d never felt this naked before, this out of control. Inwardly, she sighed. The guy just brought out the uncivilized in her.

Oh well. She came this far—may as well see where this ride ends. “You heard me.” Her chin came up defiantly. “I can’t think when you talk in that ridiculously sexy voice. Or when your biceps suddenly double in size in the middle of even the simplest of tasks, like lifting a coffee mug. And don’t get me started on your eyes. My god, I almost walked into a wall the last time you smiled and your eyes went from that soft ocean blue to deep turquoise. I mean who does that?!”

It was like she just couldn’t stop talking.

When he came to a standstill and stared at her like she’d lost her mind, she huffed, “It’s simply not reasonable to expect a girl to have a filter with all that steamy-eyed, bicep-bulging, talking-like-a-wet-dream-voice-over madness going on!”

Silence.

Huh, so where might one buy one of these filters, she wondered.

With a quiet curse, he stomped toward her and picked her up by the waist, not even pausing in his stride as he kept right on walking to the bed. Well, if he going to take her for a ride…

She speared her hands into his thick, tousled waves and nearly purred with pleasure.

“Stop being so damn open,” he rasped, sounding like a man about ready to do the unimaginable, his lips a whisper away from hers.
