Excerpt
My phone bounces around on the nightstand as it softly plays Britney Spears. It’s time to work, bitch. And this morning I have a practice skate with Luc. We have been working so hard these past few weeks and things are finally coming together. I am so thankful for this opportunity that I don’t want to let Luc and our coaches down so I try and get to the rink extra early so that I am warmed up and ready to go. I don’t want any of them waiting on me.

I look back over my shoulder to where Kane is sleeping. His eyes are still closed, and his breaths come evenly. Good, he’s still asleep and after last night’s revelations, I don’t want to wake him up. We are finally in a good place again and I’m not going to throw Luc in his face the very next day. I’m not going to be the one to rock the boat this time.

I gently lift the covers and cautiously slide out from underneath them. If I was focused on anything other than not waking Kane up, I would have noticed that he, and other parts of his anatomy, were very much awake long before his arm tightens around my waist and hauls me back into the bed.

“Eeek!” I squeal as he surprises me.

“Where are you going, Tink?” Kane rasps, his voice still husky with sleep and other things. “I don’t know if I’m ready to let you leave this bed yet.”

“Well, you don’t have a choice because I have an early practice this morning,” I inform him with a little softness in my voice so that he knows that I am not choosing the rink over him. “But I’ll be back later.”

Kane lets go of me and I slide out of bed and start pulling clothing that I had left here before we stopped speaking from drawers. I notice that Kane is flinging the covers back and pushing up from the bed to stand nude in all his morning glory—and I do mean glory—which I see prominently when he turns to the side before facing away again. His firm backside is turned towards me and I watch the muscles in his body play as he stretches out.

“Wh-what are you doing?” I ask before I give my brain a chance to catch up with my mouth. I should probably get some coffee in me before I sign my life away.

“Getting up,” he says with a smirk playing about his mouth.

“I . . . uhh . . . I see that,” I mumble as I stare at his erection. I can’t help it. It’s like there’s a sexual tractor beam that draws my eyes directly to his long, hard cock.

“My eyes are up here, baby,” he says with a chuckle and my eyes snap up to his. “I meant that I was getting out of bed to go with you.”

“Oh . . .” Well, that’s not at all embarrassing. Kane has the ability to wipe all thought from my brain with a set of glutes that I know for a fact that I can bounce a quarter off of them because I have already tried.

I lose my train of thought as I watch Kane pull a pair of lighter wash jeans out of a drawer and slide them up his legs without underpants. They way that the smooth material molds to his muscular legs and . . . other assets shows how well-worn they are. Not to mention spending the day knowing that there is nothing standing in between my hand and what I so desperately want but a few buttons and some well worn material is going to play havoc in my mind all morning. He pulls a white t-shirt over his head then grabs a gray hoodie and tosses it on the bed before grabbing a pair of socks and running shoes.

“Sophie?” he calls my name making me snap to attention.

“What?” I ask still distracted by the thought of him going commando. I wonder if I would be able to tell if he was even a little bit hard because the material is so soft and pliable. If I was paying more attention to what I was trying not to pay attention to I would definitely have my answer.

“You were staring . . .” he trails off in explanation.

“Huh?” I slow blink once . . . twice . . . three times to clear the fog from my brain but all I can see is Kane’s huge . . . uhh . . .

“You’re staring.” He smirks. “And if you keep on staring at me like that Tink we’re going to be about an hour late.” That snaps me back into consciousness.

“No!” I shout as he prowls closer. “We don’t have time.”

“I’ll be quick,” he hums as he pushes me back onto the bed and somehow scooping up the shirt of his that I slept in last night and pulling it over my head to throw down to the floor like the practiced sex magician that he is—leaving me naked.

“How quick?” I ask before I can stop my mouth from asking what my brain knows that it shouldn’t. I don’t have time to play with Kane. I can’t be late for practice.

“Fast,” Kane says as he flicks open the buttons on those jeans that he wears all too well and lets his hard length spring free. He leans down over me. And I was going to be early anyways, now I’ll just be on time. That’s good enough. I can afford to be fast with Kane.

“Not too fast,” I complain.

“No, baby. Not too fast,” he says just before he crashes his mouth down on mine and slides deep inside me. Kane hits that spot that makes my eyes roll back in my head and all rational thought goes right out the window.

Synopsis
Born to a death sentence in a near-future America, rebellious sisters herald a revolution—if they can survive.

Twins Ava and Mira Goodwin defy the Rule of One simply by existing. The single-child law, ruthlessly enforced by Texas’s Governor Roth, has made the sisters famous fugitives and inspirations for the resurgent rebellion known as the Common.

But the relentless governor and his implacable Texas State Guard threaten that fragile hope, as Roth consolidates his power in a bid for ultimate authority.

As Ava and Mira relinquish the relative safety of their Canadian haven to stand against Roth, new allies arise: Owen, a gifted young programmer, impulsively abandons his comfortable life in a moment of compassion, while Zee, an abused labor camp escapee, finds new purpose in resistance.

The four will converge on Dallas for a reckoning with Roth, with nothing less than their destinies—and the promise of a future free from oppression—on the line.

Disobedience means death. But a life worth living demands rebellion.

Excerpt #2
MIRA

Limos and luxury cars line the extensive circular driveway, stuffed with partygoers ready for the welcoming bash. Mrs. and Mr. Cross have already arrived with much fanfare from their son and his doting employees. I wonder if Ciro’s sisters are here.

I hear him get on the microphone, introducing his unwitting parents onto the stage of the overflowing banquet hall, the governor of Alberta and the mayor of Calgary looking on from the front row.

Everything’s falling nicely into place. If only the man of the hour would show.

I look at my watch: 7:30 p.m. He’s late. Ava’s knee bounces furiously, as if she can shake out her anxiety.

“He’ll come,” I say.

From our hideout in the corner of the foyer, shadowed and easily overlooked, we have the best seats in the house. A perfect vantage point to see and be unseen. Ava scans the budding festivities through the glass walls on our left. I keep my eyes on the glass windows straight ahead, seeing past the dazzling flares from the cars’ headlights, holding out for the first glimpse of the president.

A string quartet begins to play, and an electric energy pulsates through the hotel, enlivening the crowd around us with a giddy exhilaration, and I can’t help but feel it too. Eager, I spring to my feet. I pace up and down our tucked-away corner, checking the time, watching Emery from across the room, waiting on her signal.

“Do you hear that?” Ava asks. She stares up at the ceiling. I move beside her as we listen to the muffled roar of whirling blades slicing the air somewhere above the building.

“A helicopter,” Ava says.

“He’s here.”

We look to Emery, who stands near the entrance, her gaze locked skyward. Guests file past as she removes a headscarf from her pocket, drapes the silk over her distinctive curls, and pulls it into a tight knot at the back of her neck. She folds her right arm over her chest, our cue to move.

I feel, rather than see, Barend steal into place behind us, our long shadow, as we push to the end of the foyer. Pawel detaches himself from the crowd and crosses our path as he follows Emery out the front door. “Lots of luck,” he whispers earnestly. Like luck has anything to do with it. It’s all up to us.

Our target is the oversized clock that consumes the entire wall alongside the vacant concierge desk. Ava stops before the number six, and we slip behind a false door and stride side by side down an empty staff hallway. Three right turns, two left, a final door, and we’re outside.

There are no lights behind the hotel and no people. The night is chilly and moonless, but we find the footpath we were directed to take and make our silent way to the small grove of trees just twenty yards out.

Ten paces in, Ava and I turn from the path and weave through the evergreens until we spot the narrow clearing that is to be our stage. We position ourselves in its center, shoulder to shoulder, and wait. Somewhere to our right, concealed within the trees and darkness, Barend stands guard.

When told of the plan, Emery immediately authorized the private rendezvous. She knows pleading our case face-to-face with the president is the only way. Cameras and screens provide a barrier, Emery said. The media paints you solely as American rebels. Let him see how human you are. With Pawel at her side, Emery is to meet and escort the president here, while Ciro entertains his parents and guests, keeping them safely ignorant inside the banquet hall.

The minutes tick off, and Ava starts to shiver from either the cold or nerves. Or is that me shivering? Ava and I brought no weapons with us, to show good faith. No guns, no knives. Just us, with our naked conviction and hope.

This could be our last stop, a final end to the endless chase. A place to plan and plot and devise our crucial counterattack.

Ava nudges me with a sharp elbow. She points to the trees in front of us. Two distinct shapes emerge, a faint silhouette floating behind.

“Ready?” I whisper needlessly. Ava tightens her jaw, and I ball my hands into white-knuckled fists. I take a big gulp of air and exhale slowly. My breath comes out in swirling smoke, reminding me of a dragon. There’s a fire inside me, and suddenly I feel warm and calm. One look from Ava and I know she feels it too.

We’re ready.

The outlines become faces and bodies. Emery appears first, then President Moore, with Pawel a few steps behind. I stare at Moore, transfixed, my eyes glued to the man who can grant us refuge.

He stumbles forward, as if his own eyes have not yet adjusted to the dark. I search his every feature, looking for any hint of surprise, or shock, or understanding. But his face, though startlingly attractive in the starlight, is blank. Indifferent.

“President Moore,” Emery says, “this is Ava and Mira Goodwin.” He looks at us cross-eyed, his round eyes squinting as he takes us in. We all stand motionless, awaiting his response.

“You don’t look identical to me,” the president finally states, his thin voice magnified in the still night air. “One of you’s slightly taller, the other rounder.”

The leader of the free world opens with an insult. My first reaction is to defend my identicalness. Surprising, when all I’ve ever wanted is to be seen as different from Ava.

“Sir—” Ava and I speak at the same time.

The president laughs. “Ah, there it is.” The ground spins as he turns to leave. “This conversation will be moved to a different setting. Just the twins and me.”

Barend detaches from the shadows. Pawel and Emery enclose my sister and me. Ava grabs my arm, her grip tight enough to bruise.

“We do not agree to any change—” Emery starts, but Moore shouts over her.

“Security!”

Everything shatters, all plans and expectations smashed to pieces.

A gunshot rings out, then two more.

“Run!” Emery yells.

The last thing I see is Ava’s face, twisted in fear and fury.

Then something covers my eyes. My mouth.

I’m thrown over a bulky shoulder, the deafening sounds of a helicopter growing louder with every footfall. With every one of my muffled screams.

I’m shoved against something solid. I reach out, arms flailing, but there’s no one beside me. Ava.

I feel the chopper lift into the sky. Two spinning blades taking me higher and higher away from Common ground.

Synopsis
Love isn’t supposed to hurt.

Hedge witch Shannon Baldos isn’t looking for love. She isn’t even looking for sex. She’s looking for the courage to finally leave her gaslighting husband’s ass. So the last thing she needs is a distraction, like the town’s land-grabbing yet oh so sexy property developer, Adam St. John.

Then again, maybe a little distraction is exactly what she does need.

Growing up under the domineering thumb of her maternal grandmother, and then married to a misogynistic husband, thirty-nine-year-old Shannon Baldos has learned that love hurts. For almost seven years she’s lived under the thumb of her abusive husband, all with the guise of wanting to give her son a stable home. The truth? She’s stayed because she’s a coward. Still is. But maybe, with heart fluttering, groin throbbing, Adam St. John by her side, or on top of her, under works too, she might discover some hidden courage and finally take her son and escape. As for falling for St. John and his pirate grin, not a chance. Rule #1: Don’t fall in love.

Referred to as an emotional train wreck, Wexford’s successful developer, Adam St. John, has rules. A lot of them. Created to keep him well-insulated from further pain and disappointment with regards to life, and love. At forty-nine, he’s quite happy with his life of solitude. With three divorces under his belt, he’s in no hurry to add a fourth. Besides, there are more than enough women willing to keep him warm at night. But when he meets the town’s green-eyed witch with the freckles splattered across the bridge of her nose, and the hips that sway under her flowing skirts, one night of passion leaves him craving more. Maybe it’s time to break a few rules.

In her newest novel, Breaking the Rules, Tinthia Clemant has woven a story about one brave woman’s determination to take back her life as she learns that love doesn’t always hurt.

Excerpt #2
The voices of the patrons inside Brewin’ Beans hummed steadily against the whirring and sputtering of the espresso machine. Like bees around a hive, customers waiting for their morning fix of caffeine hovered by the counter. From where she sat, Shannon had a full view of the entire inside of the café. Jimbo hated when she called the Beans a café. ‘For the love of Pete,’ he’d complain. ‘Call it what it is, a goddamn coffee shop.’

Of the handful of establishments in Wexford, the Beans was her favorite place to be. A friendly staff was always ready to serve her, and the coffee was as good as any European bistro. Of course, she’d never been to Europe, but she imagined it to be true. Plus, her scones were featured daily in the bakery case.

And, of course, there was Jimbo. She sipped her lukewarm espresso and followed his movements. At six feet seven inches tall, three feet wide, with a shock of white hair, matching bushy eyebrows, and a chest-length beard, he was hard to miss. When she’d first met him, she’d immediately thought Old Saint Nick had decided owning a coffee shop in a small town in New Hampshire was the way to spend his off-time from the North Pole. Jimbo even sported the portly belly that shook whenever he laughed, which was often.

A local kid who would ‘never amount to anything,’ Jimbo Albie had spent his middle- and high-school years playing football, stealing cars, and getting high. After he graduated, he bought a motorcycle and moved to Manchester, where he partied, sold drugs, and spent a good deal of time behind bars.

If it hadn’t been for Adam St. John dragging Jimbo into rehab and then back to Wexford, he would have wasted away in some obscure alley. The developer had helped Jimbo buy the building she was sitting in and had handled all the renovations.

Shannon wrinkled her nose, distaste tinging her saliva. Being a good friend to Jimbo didn’t excuse St. John for what he really was: a money-hungry, land-grabbing jerk.

She felt no love for the residents of Wexford, but the wooded areas were magnificent, and St. John was mowing them down for his grotesque housing developments. If she’d been allowed to join the Conservation Committee, she’d be working hard to stop him, but nope, witches need not apply. She’d curtly been informed this by the committee’s chairperson and self-appointed witch hunter, Leeann, two e’s-two n’s. The woman needed to get a better way of introducing herself: ‘Hi, I’m Leeanntwo e’s-two n’sChambers.’ Seriously, who introduces themselves like that? Every town had someone like her, the busybody who made sure her perky little nose was in everything.

Shannon signaled toward the two women who entered the café. The larger of the women walked up to the booth with a determined stride, unkempt frosted hair pushed behind her ears, cheeks, normally flushed, blazing cherry red. “I have a showing, so we need to make this snappy.” Cantankerous at times, opinionated often, and Irish to the core, Denise ‘Dee’ Boyle had a take-charge manner, and that morning was no different. Peering out from under hooded eyelids, she studied Shannon’s petite coffee cup. “You’re drinking espresso?” Her husky voice was thicker than usual, indicating a hangover. “Why don’t you drink real coffee like normal people?” Dee waved her hand at Shannon. “Switch sides, I need to see the door.”

“It’s great to see you too, Dee,” Shannon said, exiting her seat. “Morning, Peg.” She paused to hug the tall redhead standing behind Dee.

“Everything okay, Shan?” Peg stooped to place a light kiss on Shannon’s cheek.

“Yeah, fine. I—”

“Stop talking,” Dee said. “Peg, sit. What do you both want? My treat. The Holstein house sold, and my commission check was through the roof. Jeff and I stayed up late celebrating, and now I can’t get rid of this stinking headache. Shan, do you have any of your magic shit with you?”

“Hmm, let me see, what do I want?” Peg said, tapping her chin with her index finger.

“This isn’t rocket science, Peg,” Dee snapped. “Make a decision.”

“I’ll have a double latte and one of Shannon’s scones,” Peg decided.

“Same for me,” Shannon added. “But no scone.” She handed Dee a small packet of white powder. “For your headache.”

“Why the two of you can’t drink normal coffee is beyond me.” Dee took the powder and looked at the line near the counter. “That’s bullshit. I’m not waiting in that. I’ll go round and corral Jimbo from behind.”

Dee marched away, leaving Peg to roll her eyes and Shannon chuckling.

“I wouldn’t want to be Jimbo.”

“He’s a big boy; he can handle Dee.” Peg removed a mirror from her purse and handed it to Shannon. “Hold this, will you?”

Pegchristened MargaretO’Neil was the princess of the group. Tall and slender, with the grace of a swan, she was also the referee, often separating Shannon and Dee when they locked horns. She positioned Shannon’s hand in the exact right spot and smiled, revealing straight, polished-to-a-brilliant-shine teeth. “Perfect, don’t move.” She removed a hair clip, and a mass of curls the color of an October sunset tumbled over slender shoulders covered by a pink cotton hoodie. Repositioning the lion’s mane back on top of her head, she loosened a few strands and allowed them to coil around her neck. Frowning, she said, “I hate my nose.” She took the mirror and closed it with a decisive snap. “When I’m rich, I’m going to get it fixed.”

“I wouldn’t,” Shannon advised. “Your nose gives you a Greek-goddess look.”

“Thanks, Shan, but I’ve never liked it. I guess it goes back to being given nicknames like Honker when I was in grade school.”

“Yeah, well, grade school can be a tough time for kids,” Shannon said. “How’s the studio? I keep meaning to get over there, but I never seem to find the time.” She diverted her eyes, not wanting Peg to see that she was lying. She had plenty of time to visit her friend’s yoga studio, but when Justin had found her mat in the closet, he’d torn it in half, telling her to clean the house if she needed exercise.

“Don’t worry about it. Yoga isn’t for everyone.”

“I like yoga. I used to do it when Chad was first born. It’s just that…”

Peg reached out and patted Shannon’s hand. “Really, I mean it. It’s okay.”

Shannon bit at her lip and nodded. Hoping a change of topic might appease her guilt at being a shit friend, she asked, “How’s Haley?”

“She’s a fucking witch.” Peg covered her mouth with her fingers. “Oh, sorry, I don’t mean your kind of witch. I’m thinking of the ones with pointy noses and green skin.”

“I get it, but try and find another word. What’s she done this time?”

“She picks fights with me constantly. I can’t even breathe without her having something nasty to say.”

“Has she started her…?”

“Her period? Yes, and that’s part of the problem. She and I have the same cycle, so we’re both wit—bitches at the same time of the month. The other day she called me…” Peg leaned forward, her voice lower than a whisper. “…a cunt.” Sitting back, she added, “What do you think about that?”

“I think my grandmother would have washed my mouth out with a gallon of bleach if I had called her that, though I wanted to. What’d you do?”

“I locked her in her bedroom, which was a waste of time because she went out her window. I swear, I’m at the end of my rope.”

It was Shannon’s turn to pat Peg’s hand. “I’m sure it’ll get better, but I’m glad it’s you and not me. Girls can be mean.” And adults, she’d almost added, her thoughts cycling back to Justin. The names he’d called her over the years would shock Peg.

“Tell me about it. I’d love to send her to a camp this summer. Someplace far away, like China.”

Dee flopped onto the seat next to Peg and reached for a napkin. She wiped her face and complained, “It’s a madhouse up there. You should have seen the looks I got when I walked behind the counter.” The damp napkin dropped on the table. “Shannon, your scones are sold out. I guess the new flavor was a hit. And I ordered a pot of real coffee. You two can take it or leave it.”

“I’ll make more tonight,” Shannon said. “Where’s the coffee?”

“Jimbo’s daughter is bringing them over with some bagels. He needs to do something about the AC in this place.” A second crumpled napkin joined the first. “What were you two talking about?”

“Nothing, really,” Peg answered. “My evil daughter and that you two haven’t come by for a free class.”

“You know I don’t like yoga.” Dee centered her hazel eyes on Shannon. “Right now I want to know why the urgent meeting? Is Justin divorcing you so he can marry Shelby?” Based on her laughter, Dee seemed to enjoy her little joke.

Peg bumped Dee’s shoulder, clearly not amused. “Not funny.”

“Whatever. So what’s up, Shan? Wait a minute. Here comes our food.”

A petite young girl arrived at the table and set down a coffee pot, mugs, and food. “Here you go, ladies. Dad said to yell if you want anything else.” She did a pirouette on her white Keds and almost skipped back to the front counter.

“I can’t even imagine how that cute little wisp has Jimbo’s genes.” Dee snorted and grabbed the cinnamon raisin bagel. “Maybe she’s the mailman’s.”

Peg daintily selected the plain bagel. “You might recall Jimbo was a good-looking guy in his younger days.”

“Yeah, was,” Dee answered. “Not any more. That’s what drugs and alcohol does to a person. Maybe it’s true that St. John got it on with Jimbo’s wife.”

“Dee, don’t even kid about things like that,” Peg said.

Dumbfounded, Shannon stared at Dee. “I can’t believe you said that.”

“What? It’s always been a rumor. Ask Jimbo. He’ll tell you.”

“That’s not the point,” Peg continued. “Adam wouldn’t do something like that to his friend.”

Dee snorted and smeared a piece of her bagel with cream cheese. “He’s St. John. He’d fuck Malcolm’s wife if given the chance.”

“Who’s Malcolm?” Shannon asked.

Peg gave Dee an incensed glare. “Adam’s half-brother, and he wouldn’t sleep with another man’s wife.”

The two entered into an argument about St. John’s integrity while Shannon sipped her coffee. If the rumors were true, Adam St. John was a manwhore. Not that there was anything wrong with sleeping around. Back in the day, she’d played a robust game of musical beds…and hallways…and cars, along with an elevator or two, sleeping bags, and even a rowboat. At any rate, his promiscuity had nothing to do with her reasons for not liking him. Since she’d never even met the man, she had no idea if he was a blowhard, as Justin called him; her opinion was based purely on what the developer was doing to the town.

Dee waved her spoon. “Snap to it, Shan. I’ll be leaving soon.”

Shannon lowered her cup.

“Give her time,” Peg said. “She’s thinking.”

“She’s not thinking; she’s daydreaming. Come on, Shan, spit it out, whatever you called us here for.”

Shannon inhaled and released air through her teeth. She shouldn’t share information like wanting a divorce; it was a private matter. If she’d learned one thing from her grandmother, it was not to air dirty laundry for the world to see.

Dee stirred her coffee with an impatient tapping. “Any day now.”

Shannon lowered her hands to her lap. “It’s nothing. I shouldn’t have bothered you two. I’m sorry.”

“Bull. Come on, tell us. I promise I’ll keep my big mouth shut,” Dee said.

With a quick intake of air, Shannon blurted, “I’m thinking of leaving Justin.”

The gaping mouths facing her told her she should have started with a more subtle lead-in.

Author Tinthia Clemant

About the Author
Tinthia Clemant was born in Medford, Massachusetts, over sixty years ago. Her childhood was a happy one. She lived in a loving home with her three siblings, mother and father. Her imagination soared as she passed the days enacting the scenes from the stories that spun through her mind.

Tinthia always wrote. From the time she first picked up a pencil, or perhaps it was a crayon, she wrote. Stories about searching for secrets. Stories about joy and sadness; friendship and betrayal; and, of course, stories about true love.

She self-published her first book by stapling six pages together. Her marketing plan was simple–give the book to her mother for Mother’s Day. Marketing her indie-published books has gotten a whole lot harder but she pushes on, knowing the worlds she creates will take each reader on a magical journey.

A romantic women’s fiction author, Tinthia fell in love with romance when she witnessed, at the impressionable age of five, the power of true love. On the silver screen of the Meadow Glen drive-in, she watched Prince Phillip defeat Maleficent’s tangled web of thorns and the fire-breathing dragon so he could save his lady love. As Phillip pressed his lips against Sleeping Beauty’s, she understood the power of true love’s first kiss.

As a hopeful romantic, Tinthia has searched far and wide for that special someone who will take her breath away. Unfortunately, she has yet to find love’s magical kiss. However, she learned a lot about herself along the way and uses these lessons to weave her stories and the strong (and older) heroines she brings to life.

Tinthia lives on the banks of the Concord River and spends her time teaching science at a local community college, gardening, painting, tending her flock of Mallards (follow her natural history blog at: concordriverlady.com), reading, and, of course, writing about journeys, disappointment, joy, and true love. Her two favorite men are Ben and Jerry and she wishes they would bring back the summer flavor, Blueberry Cheesecake.

Excerpt #2
I’m drifting on the edge of sleep. I want to hold on as long as I can, to drink in more of her. I roll my head to my right and open my eyes. She looks like an angel dressed in the white of my sheets. She’s gently hugging her pillow and her chestnut locks are strewn above her. I want to touch her but I don’t want to disturb this pristine picture.

The dichotomy of the beginning and end of the last twenty-four hours is not lost on me. I began the frame in the lowest of places. I had lost a dream again. That caged feeling is now gone. I know there is so much more to work out but I know now there is hope. Hope for a future I actually want. Hope for a freedom I thought was impossible. This beauty beside me. Maybe she heard my hamster wheel this time because she slides her body to hug me instead of her pillow. I draw lazy lines from her lower back up her spine to the base of her neck.

Hope for me came in the form of this girl.

Hope is rooted in our love.

In moments, our breathing syncs and her warmth lulls me into a peaceful sleep.

Excerpt
Kaylee: Nick, this is Kaylee. I’m on a burner phone. I’m in trouble.

Nick: Where are you?
Kaylee: Slowly. Look up.

Nick’s in the coffee shop where we first met two years ago. There are two drinks at his table, a black coffee for him, and an iced latte. We were supposed to meet here ten minutes ago. Looks like he ordered for me. I smile at that. I’ve wanted him since the day I first saw him. But he’s never indicated that he sees me as anything but a skilled asset for his team.

He casually stretches his arms over his head and leans back in his wooden caféchair. He’s in his usual get-up, a black T-shirt stretched over his biceps and a leather jacket loaded with weapons. The shop is crowded, there’s a line at the counter, and all the tables are taken. Even so, there’s a space around Nick, like people can sense that he’s more

Three men in sunglasses and black suits block the doorway, scanning the shop. Nick takes them in and his shoulders tighten. As a security expert and a former Ranger, he knows a threat when he sees one.

They’re here for me.

Nick feigns a yawn and finally brings his eyes to the ceiling. The only acknowledgement that he sees me is a slow blink. I’m in the HVAC, peering out from the ceiling vent.

Not for nothing, but this isn’t the first time I’ve crawled through an air vent.

Excerpt #1
AVA

“You’re back,” I say, rising from my bed. Everyone in the room stands, acknowledging Emery as leader of the Common.

She wears her signature look: an unstructured, slightly oversized yellow coat that ends at her knees. Her rich nut-brown hair is short and wild like Einstein’s, and she’s taller than everyone in her small entourage. The more I’ve studied Emery—my mother’s childhood best friend—during my stay here at the Paramount, the more I’ve discovered she’s not the perfectly straitlaced leader I’d expected her to be. Looking closely, I can see the rough edges that hint at the woman she was before having to bear the weight of being the rebellion’s leader. The leftover holes from a double eyebrow piercing above her left eye, the way she bites the inside of her cheeks when she’s angry, as if withholding a fiery reaction. A poorly healed scar just below her collarbone. It all makes me like her even more.

Emery studies the room, her intent gaze passing over all the young faces eager and willing to carry out her orders, however small. We’re all unified in the reason we’re here with the Common, so far from our homes, and I find an unhappy comfort in the shared white-hot pain of loss. And the anger that comes with it.

“It’s good to see you all again,” Emery says. She nods to each of us in greeting. “May I have the room? I need to speak with Ava and Mira.”

The Games Club immediately disassembles, Barend directing everyone out into the hall. He shuts the door and turns on his heel, returning to his post inside our room.

Three members of Emery’s inner circle remain at her side. They’re all Elders, members who’ve been a part of the Common the longest. Their faces are hardened with world-weariness, and although I’ve never spoken to any of them personally, Pawel tells me they’ve each seen the inside of a prison cell more than once.

The door opens, and a young woman who looks a few years over twenty strides with pure confidence into the room. She stands a short distance from the group, unchallenged by Barend. She must be a new recruit, and an important one if she’s included in Emery’s close circle. The young woman’s jet-black hair is pulled back tightly into two French braids, highlighting her dark eyes with their long, intense lashes. If the eyes truly are a window to the soul, hers has taken more than a few beatings.

Mira clasps Emery’s shoulder in welcome before asking, “Did you find him this time? You’re back early—did something go wrong?”

Countless missions to rescue my father have led to nothing but disappointment. Wherever Roth is hiding his former Family Planning Director, he’s making damn sure he’ll never be found.

All four Common Elders lower their heads. Something did go wrong. Horribly wrong.

My stomach drops like a heavy anchor cut loose into the sea.

“What happened?” I demand, stepping forward. His execution date has been moved up. The Guard caught wind of our extraction plans and changed his location . . .

Emery raises her head, biting the inside of her cheeks, hard. “It’s with great sorrow that I have to inform you of your father’s murder,” she tells us straight. “I am sorry that we could not get to Darren in time.”

He’s dead. My father’s dead. I’ve learned to always prepare for bad news, but I wasn’t prepared for this.

Through a haze of salted tears, I lurch backward. Mira catches me, and I hold on to my sister tight—our combined strength the only thing that keeps me from shattering against the floor.

“No, no, no . . . you said Roth wouldn’t kill him!” I cry. “You said he wouldn’t risk turning the people to our side!”

“What about the stay of execution!” Mira says in disbelief.

“The official statement from the Governor’s Mansion is that it was a suicide,” Emery says. “Roth made a speech, weaving a story that Darren hanged himself with his bedsheets during the night, leaving behind a note detailing his great regret for his traitorous crimes against his country and its people.”

A cold panic rushes through my body, and I feel faint. Mira shakes uncontrollably beside me. I turn to my sister, and both our green eyes scream, Lies!

Father would never, never take his own life. He would fight until the bitter end to get back to us.

“The note said his greatest shame of all was raising illegal twin daughters who turned into dangerous traitors themselves.”

Roth is using our own father against us. Bile rises to my throat, and my knees falter.

Emery seizes both our shoulders, pulling us close, making sure we listen.

“We know both the suicide and the note are bullshit. We know just before sunrise, Roth entered Darren’s cell and shot your father in cold blood.”

I try to break free of Emery and my sister. I can’t breathe. I need space for my heartache, but Emery grips my shoulder harder.

“Listen to me. We have the surveillance video. Your father’s killing will not be buried. Roth’s corruption will be exposed—another link in his chain of lies. Your father will continue to help the cause even in death, as your mother did.”

“The video could be fake, too, just like the suicide note. He could still be alive!” I find myself pleading.

The new recruit with the French braids steps forward, shaking her head. Her eyes soften with sympathy. “I wish that were true.”

She pulls something from her jacket’s inner pocket and carefully opens her palm: a metal capsule the size of my fingernail.

Father’s microchip.

“I was held in the same prison as your father,” the young woman explains, her steady voice struggling to break through the fog of despair that separates me from everything else in the room. “While the Common arrived too late to rescue your father, they were able to rescue me.”

Who is this person? Why was she imprisoned, and how did she gain access to my father’s chip? It’s always a never-ending maze of questions.

“Scan the chip,” Mira says, her voice hollow.

Barend produces a microchip scanner from his duty belt—he always seems to have the necessary tool or weapon—and hands the device to Emery to scan.

Ping.

A death record pops up on the chip scanner’s screen:

Name: DR. DARREN JAMES GOODWIN

Status: DECEASED

Cause of death: SUICIDE

Burial location: UNKNOWN

The only thing I have left of my father is this tiny scrap of metal with his blood still on it. Where is his body?

I want to scream.

“It’s Darren’s chip. It has been authenticated,” Emery declares with full conviction. “Skye Lin has been fighting for the Common’s cause for half her life. She turned a Guard at the prison, who gave her the chip and surveillance video in the midst of our rescue mission.”

Skye Lin. The assassin who poisoned two states’ Family Planning Directors and made an unsuccessful attempt on my own father’s life. I’ve never seen her face; after she was arrested in Dallas five years ago, Roth banned images of the teenage murderer across all media outlets. Before Mira and me, criminals were not lionized in Texas; they did not become famous. They were thrown in dark cells and never heard from again.

“I didn’t know your dad was a member of the Common,” Skye insists. “I wasn’t trying to kill him. I was trying to kill his office.” The Family Planning Division.

With that, she turns and walks out, leaving Mira and me drowning in confusion.

“I want to see the surveillance video,” Mira says from beside me.

Taken aback, I turn to face my sister. “You want to watch our father’s murder?”

“I have to see it for myself.” She looks up at me, her eyes red and glassy with anguish. “We were raised on so many secrets, Ava. I just have to see.”

I shake my head. “I can’t.”

As I move to leave the room—I need the open air; the hurt inside me suddenly seems too large for this crowded space—Emery holds up her hand to stop me.

“We leave for the Common’s headquarters in the morning—Paramount Point Lodge. You both are needed there. I can explain more tomorrow, but for now take the time to grieve.” She lowers her head in a respectful bow. “Your father was a brave man.”

Chills run through my body. Rayla had said those same words.

He wants a better future for you both.

I close my eyes and remember Father’s greatest lesson: it takes iron to sharpen iron. Metal bullets forged my father’s death into a cast-iron weight that sits at the bottom of my heart. To be brave like my father, I must endure the painful process of honing. I must become so sharp that no one can touch me or mine again.

“Show me the surveillance video,” Mira demands once more.

“It will not be easy to watch, but the choice is yours to make,” Emery says.

Visions of my father tied helplessly to a chair, Roth standing over him with a gun, a smug smile on his lips . . .

No! I rip open my eyes and push past Emery, away from my sister. Barend gets out of my path, allowing me to throw open the door, and I stumble into the hall alone. Without any clear direction in mind, I head toward the stairwell. Anger clouds my vision; my knees are shaky, and I lean on the wall to stay standing. My entire world feels upside down, spinning out of control.

Bam. My shoulder slams into someone, jolting my body back upright.

“I’m sorry,” I say automatically.

But sharp-edged things don’t apologize. They just cut right through. I steel myself and keep going, not looking back, continuing to drag my wobbly legs down the hallway to the exit.

“No, I’m sorry,” a tentative voice says behind me. Pawel. “I’m sorry about your dad. I just heard the news.” Intensity seeps into his words. “At least he died for a reason. You can be proud.”

His words shoot at me like bullets, a gut shot with no exit wound, and I stop short. I wrap my arms around my waist—like that could stop the bleeding—and peer inside the room Pawel just exited.

A group of kids, no older than eleven or twelve, huddle on the floor around a tablet screen. Barend would be livid if he caught them with this smuggled technology. As I wonder fleetingly what their punishment would be for risking the Common’s safety, one of the kids’ heads tilts to the side, giving me a full view of the screen.

My father’s face is splashed across an underground virtual newscast. The kids watch, enraptured as a computer-generated anchor with blue hair and violet eyes gives a breathless account of how the disgraced Family Planning Director shockingly took his own life out of shame.

“My brother says it’s all a conspiracy,” a girl with a high ponytail says. It’s Ellie, Pawel’s adopted sister. “A Goodwin would never give up.”

Another girl spies me standing in the doorway, her breath catching in her throat. She nudges the boy sitting beside her, and the entire group turns to stare at me, their mouths slightly open in reverence.

“Our parents sacrificed themselves for Ellie and me too,” Pawel says quietly. A crushing sadness marks his face at the memory. Pawel’s four-person family was illegal, even if Ellie wasn’t related by blood. Whatever hardships he experienced that led him to the Common will haunt him the rest of his life.

All at once my sharp edges soften with empathy.

I flick my gaze back to my own father on the newscast. They chose a photograph of him in his stately dress uniform. He looks strong and proud and so violently alive it hurts.

I scan the youthful faces of my unexpected audience. Ellie rises and holds out her forearm, fist curled into a tight ball, like Mira and I did at the end of our hijacked newscast. She’s petite but fierce, her oval-shaped hazel eyes reflecting her tremendous appetite for defiance at such a young age.

Everyone around her stands and does the same.

Tattoos, drawn with identical dark ink, cover their right wrists, each one a unique emblem of their own resistance: a charging bull, two thick parallel lines, a scorpion ready to strike, a beautifully patterned sun with a face inside.

Next to me Pawel lifts his shirtsleeve, revealing his own tattoo of a tree with thick roots sheltering the letter E.

Our spark worked. The flame of revolution spread like wildfire just as Rayla said it would, and now even the next generation can feel its burn.

My heart races wild inside my chest. I hold down my wrist, fist clenched.

“Resist much,” I say.

“Obey little,” their voices answer in unison.

Synopsis
The Eleutians are dying out, one female at a time. To save their species, the powerful Alchemic Clan conscripts women from parallel worlds, altering them into the perfect breeding stock.

Kitlyn, a retired circus equestrian broken in both body and spirit, awakens on a strange world in her own much-younger body. She has been transformed into a Made One, but the gift of youth and the promise of a new life come at a terrible price.

Rafe, the Wolf Clan’s warrior champion, vows to find the cause of the species’ decline. He’s certain the Alchemics’ bid to save the Eleutians is but a thin veneer masking a dark purpose.

That vow becomes hard to keep with the threat of an inter-clan conflict and the arrival of the proud Made One named Kitlyn.

To save herself and those like her, Kit must carve a dangerous path in this new reality and make a choice that may cost her her freedom, her life, and the life of the Eleutian warrior she’s come to love.

About the Author
Vicki’s fantasy romantic suspense series, The Afterworld Chronicles, launched with Chest of Bone, followed by Chest of Stone and Chest of Time. She is currently pounding the keys on her series’ fourth novel, Chest of Fire, and the first in a new series, The Made Ones Sags: Altered.

Her mystery/thrillers include Body Parts, The Dead Stone, The Bone Man, and The Grief Shop, a Daphne du Maurier prize winner. All feature homicide counselor Tally Whyte. All are available as ebooks. She co-wrote (with Lisa Souza) and photographed the 10 Secrets of the LaidBack Knitters. With her late husband, William G. Tapply, she ran The Writers Studio workshops in creative fiction.  Vicki taught fiction writing and modern media writing at Clark University.

She loves both a well-crafted sentence and unlocking the doors of a student’s imagination. She grew up in professional theater and planned to become an actress, with a bent for song and dance. She didn’t. Instead, she’s been a professional photographer, a high-school teacher, a hamburger slinger, a scuba-shop manager, and an editor.

She’s Blake’s and Ben’s mom, her favorite role of all.

Her passions include scuba diving and fly fishing and knitting; photography and movies; vinho verde and bourbon (not together!); Maine lobster and chocolate (also not together!); and musical comedy scores, which she sing in the shower, unfortunately not an Equity venue; and a fascination with people in all walks of life.

I plucked at the strings again, restarting the song and finding my voice. Despite a tongue clumsy from drink, I had no trouble singing clearly. Call it my superpower; I may not have been able to walk a straight line, but I could still make flawless music while wasted.

Her eyelids fluttered closed and some of the tension in her expression eased. Her spine became less rigid and she seemed to flow across the room toward me. The way she moved may have been the most graceful thing I’d ever seen. She was just walking, but it felt like a dance, each step matching the beat of my song. My pulse raced, my body heated, and I could hear my heartbeat in my ears, thrumming to the same tempo.

My mouth had gone dry by the time she climbed up on the bed. She crawled across the covers, her movements seductive though her eyes were closed now. She only paused for a second to listen before continuing toward me, straddling my legs.

I pushed back against the pillows, the notes faltering, then stopped entirely when her breasts grazed my hand.

“Uh, I can’t play if you’re going to climb all over me. You understand that, right?”

“Sing,” she demanded.

I got the impression her vocabulary must have been limited to singular syllables in this form, and I doubted the wisdom of allowing her to just crawl on top of me the way she was doing. I clutched the guitar, deciding it was probably better to keep some barrier between us, considering she was looking at me as if she wanted to eat me.

“Why don’t you just sit next to me here, and I’ll sing you all the songs you want?” I patted the bed beside me and then started in on a different song—one I knew all the words to.

Her face twisted with displeasure. “No!” She tore the guitar from me with surprising strength and sent it crashing to the floor in a dissonant clatter. She surged up close, her breath hot against my ear, her full breasts warm through the thin fabric of my shirt.

“Sing,” she rasped.

I cleared my throat and hummed a bar of the unfinished song, then stopped. “You mean that one?”

“Mmm,” she said, a small smile gracing her lips and her eyelids fluttering closed again.

“All right, but I need you to—ah—move off me.”

I grasped her by the shoulders and attempted to twist around to position her beside me. The next thing I knew, I was pinned flat to the bed, her wild eyes staring down at me as vines snaked down and coiled around my wrists.

“Sing.”

“Fucking hell,” I muttered, staring at the vines. I tugged hard, but they held tight.

Her lovely, dark face hovered over me, eyes a maelstrom of need, but a flicker of deeper awareness made me think Deva was still in there, perhaps along for the ride while her instincts had control. Up close, her lips were a deep blue, as was her tongue as it swept across her lower lip.

Fuck, now she did look like she was going to eat me, and I was only more convinced of that when she grasped the sides of my shirt and wrenched it open, leaving me absently relieved it had snaps instead of buttons.

She raked her blunt nails down my chest, the sensation more arousing than painful. My body came alive under her touch despite the fact that I knew she was off-limits. But holy fuck, was this hot. If she went any further, all bets were off.

Determined to see the silver lining in her unraveled plans, she decides to book a plane ticket to join them and resurrect her dreams of becoming a travel photographer.

But Harper’s travels aren’t all sunshine and cocktails. With Adam begging for her forgiveness and proposing on the eve of her departure, Harper knows she must be on her best behavior. But when she meets Xavier, an enigmatic poet on the beaches of Goa, that may just be easier said than done.

Excerpt
The girls decided that food would do me good, so I pulled myself together and followed them through the field, across the bridge and back into town. The street lamps flickered as we wandered around wondering if we should go to the restaurant with the hung-over backpackers splayed out watching reruns of The Simpsons, or the restaurant with the hungover backpackers splayed out watching reruns of Family Guy when someone called out, “Hey, Canada!”

Turning back towards the river, we saw three guys who were part of our musical uprising on the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong. Lana called back, “Hawaii!”

Chad, Kelly and Felix were fresh off a bus from Luang Prabang and also in search of sustenance. As we stood debating food options, Chad’s brown eyes raked over Lana, who had taken the time to brush her hair and slap a bit of makeup on. “Lana, are you Lana Brooks, the TV weathergirl?”

“Former weathergirl,” she said, batting her thick eyelashes.

“I thought it was you!” he said, stepping closer. “Guys, remember when I showed you that Chive article of the world’s hottest weather girls? This is the one from Canada.”

I smiled as Lana basked in the attention the guys were giving her. Some people collected souvenirs along their travels, but Lana collected admirers. Felix’s green cat-like eyes glittered as he realized he was standing in the presence of a Chive-worthy hottie.

“Dude,” Kelly said, smoothing his shaggy, dirty-blond hair before shaking her hand. “It is a privilege and an honour to make your acquaintance.” “Alright, alright, can we please choose somewhere to eat, please?” Jade huffed crossing her arms.

And, with that the boys led us to a restaurant perched over the waters of the river that featured neither animated sitcoms nor hung-over backpackers and began our first night out in Vang Vieng.
