Excerpt #3
The door flung open, and we pushed our way inside. Mom stood at the sink. She dabbed at her face with a tissue and turned slowly toward us. Her puffy and red-rimmed eyes sent a coldness shuffling through me.

“What’s wrong, Mom? Did something happen?”

She nodded and pointed in the direction of Bob’s bed. “Over there.”

My gaze shot to the corner. My hot, fluttery stomach plummeted with an iron heaviness. Dad, hunching beside Bob, rubbed the dog’s head and stroked his chin and ears. Bob lay there lifeless, unmoving. Symphony curled up tight beside him, her head bundled in close to Bob’s. Her body stayed still, and cloudy eyes revealing her heartbreak.

I rushed over, dropping my purse to the floor. “No… please no.”

Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes while I slid to the floor, coming to rest by Bob’s bed. “He’s really sick, Sophia. Sometime throughout the day his stomach acted up again, and his hips gave out. He hasn’t touched a bite all day and can’t walk anymore.”

“Shouldn’t we call Doc Fitzner?” I scrambled up, racing to the phone. “I’ll call him.”

“I’ve already done that. Made an emergency call to him this afternoon. He saw Bob and gave him some medicine, but said there’s nothing we can do.”

I fought to swallow— why was it so stinking hard to swallow? As I clasped my hands under my chin, the hot tears engulfed my eyes, dripping down onto my face. I staggered back over to Dad and Bob. Dad got up and brought an unsure hand up to my face like he was going to wipe away my tears. But, being the awkward dad he was, his arm flopped to his side again and he simply said, “He’s old, Soph.”

“But Dad.” My tear-soaked voice croaked out. “We can’t give up on him.”

My wobbly legs gave out and I sank to the floor, curling up beside Bob. Symphony raised her head to look at me, but plopped it back down again, the fur at the corners of her eyes damp. I gathered him in my arms and buried my face into his fur. He let out a small whimper and licked the side of my face, trying to comfort me. Me, when it was him who was slipping away. In spite of all of Bob’s pain and suffering, the love he had for me was unwavering. It was amazing the way a dog never pulled judgement, was never self-serving, and loved you no matter what the circumstances. Bob loved beyond all reason, even on his darkest days. He was always there to cheer me up.

Dad cleared his throat, his voice hoarse and shaky. “I’m sorry.”

I sat back up on my heels. “What do we do? There’s gotta be something.” Hope swam in my eyes, searching his face for an answer.

Mom let out a small sob, still standing by the sink. Dad’s spine bowed and his shoulders drooped. His voice wheezed out in a flat monotone, “He’s gonna to have to be put down. He’ll never walk again.”

I jerked my head back. “What? You can’t be serious.” My voice quavered, the disbelief and sadness slamming me in the chest. “There has to be something we can do for him. I’m not just gonna throw him away. I can’t live without Bob.”

The tears started to roll again. I couldn’t stop them, my breath coming out in hitching, violent sobs. Mom came to sit by me, collecting me tight in her arms. Aaron leaned against the sink, his arms wrapped underneath his chest.

Mom wiped the tears from my face and tucked a strand of hair behind my ears. “It’s okay. Bob is suffering now, sweetie. He’ll be in a better place.”

A better place. The words resounded in my head like a reverberating thunderclap. Bob would be going to where Matt and Mandy had gone. I’m sure dogs didn’t have unfinished business, so he wouldn’t become a ghost. If what Mandy had told me was true, Bob was going to love where he was going. He would be at peace, and he would be alive in all things. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad for him. It was us that would lose, not Bob. The sadness would be unbearable. It would hurt like a stake in the heart to see him go, but if I could at least know that he would always be around me, like Tate, maybe the dagger wouldn’t hurt so much.
