My name is Clementine Jones. I’m more machine than human, with a sketchy past and an even dimmer future.
I’m the new captain of the Pícara II. I brought down the spaceport of one of the largest companies in the galaxy. I’m secretly infected with a ticking time-bomb of a virus. I’m in love with an android who’d rather erase the memory of our kiss than deal with the aftermath.
I’m scared shitless of what to do next. And I’m definitely not hero material.
But the ruling corporations of the galaxy have just made their last markdown on the price of human life.
That is, if I have anything to say about it. And I aim to bring them down.
I just stepped in robot dog piss.
It’s not exactly piss—thankfully—but it’s still black, oily, and gets all over my boots. I curse under my breath, lifting my foot up to see the oil dripping from my boot.
It smells horrible. And it’s the third time in as many days that I’ve stepped in oil slicks.
“Oliver!” I roar, twisting my head. “Oliver Twist!”
The cabin boy comes running down the hallway, his mechanical pup trailing behind him, barking happily. Until it sees me, and then it cowers behind Oliver, whining with a high-pitched whir. For a nine-year-old boy, Oliver stands his ground, knowing that he’s in trouble.
I admire that in him, so I have to hide my smile as I cross my arms.
“Wilbur’s been marking his territory,” I tell him, gesturing to my boot. “Again.”
I watch as Oliver gulps nervously, then glances down at Wilbur, who growls at my mention of his name. “He doesn’t mean to, Clem,” Oliver says, “it’s just his programming, and—”
“He’s your responsibility,” I say shortly. “You need to discipline him when he does this. You need to keep an eye on him.”
