Synopsis
Ten hours… That’s how much time we spent together. How much time I got with the man whose bright eyes and sultry smile almost made me forget that I was sick.

Six hundred minutes… That’s how long it took me to fall in love.

Thirty-six thousand seconds… And then it was over. And all I wanted was more.
More seconds.
More minutes.
More hours.
More him.

Ten hours… Such a small, insignificant amount of time.

Yet those ten hours changed everything.

Synopsis
Tall, handsome, and eternally optimistic Noah has dated a string of gorgeous women. His best friend Elle has outlasted them all. Of course, he has no idea she’s been in love with him for years. Why would he? It’s not like she’s going to tell him. After all, she’s short and awkward, and as he’s fond of reminding her, has a sour disposition.

When Elle takes off on her annual ten-day vacation with her family, Noah comes to a startling realization. She’s the woman who is by his side day in and day out, whose office is across the hall, and whose house is around the corner. She has called him on his shit when he gets too cocky, and he has held her in her arms when her heart was broken. Absence must make the heart grow fonder because while she’s in Germany with her parents, he realizes that everything he has ever wanted was right there all along. Now he’s on a mission to make her realize that romance won’t ruin their friendship, but platonic friendship is ruining their relationship.

Excerpt
I’m a guy, and as a guy, I am a great appreciator of the female form in all its glory. I’ve met women who could easily be supermodels, but who were unattractive because of their personalities, intellect, or lack thereof. I have dated women who were what some guys might consider average looking, but who blew me away with their intelligence, wit, or sense of humor, and that made them sexy as hell.

One thing I’m certain of is that finding a woman who is gorgeous, intelligent, funny, doesn’t take herself too seriously, and has a kind heart, is nearly impossible. It’s like finding a unicorn in the middle of an island full of mermaids while standing on a hill made up of all the gold from the lost city of Atlantis. Well, I happen to be the luckiest son-of-a-bitch on the planet, because I have found exactly that. My personal unicorn is named Ariel Bailey, but she answers to Elle.

I’ve liked Elle since we first met while she was in college. I was visiting my brother at school, and he was dating a friend of hers. She was only twenty-three then, and I had graduated a few years before. I liked her and I could’ve tried to make a move on her back then, but it seemed a little weird to me to date someone who was still in college when I was starting my first real job. We became friends, and stayed in touch after she graduated. When a position opened up at my company, I couldn’t call her fast enough.

About the Author
We all need moments of escape. With all the demands on us day in and day out, we each need something just for ourselves. Perhaps nothing provides a private moment – a brief respite from the everyday – like escaping into a great story. When you pick up one of my books I hope you find that place that you can escape to. Explore the streets of Paris with new heroines, or fly around the world to reclaim your lost love with a favorite hero. Whether it’s the romance that takes your breath away or those climactic encounters that make your pulse race, I hope you find that solitary moment of enjoyment while lost in one of my stories.

Jennifer Woodhull is based in the Southern United States, spending time in her second home of England, and traveling as often as she can. Her love of travel permeates her work, and her characters often find themselves exploring new and foreign surroundings.

A keen observer of human behavior, Jennifer often draws inspiration from something as simple as a fleeting connection, or the glimpse of a unique trait or characteristic. Her favorite place to write is on airplanes.

“The drone of the engine, the scores of people, all traveling to something or from something, and being disconnected from digital distractions are a combination that provide the perfect place to write,” she says. “If you see a woman in seat 9F who is balancing her Macbook on her lap because it’s time to close your tray table, please have patience. I’m just trying to finish one more sentence.”

Excerpt #2
Bachelorettes and Big Thunder Oh my!

Twenty minutes later . . .

“You guys can come back in now,” Kane says as he holds the doorway open for the party of hooligans also known as our closest friends to enter.

“Hey, girl,” Shelby says to me on a smile as walks in. Trent is right behind her wearing the most ridiculous smile I have ever seen in my life on his face. That can only mean bad things for Kane. Uh oh.

“What are you guys doing here?” I ask the room at large.

“Well, we were here to support you, obviously,” Shelby answers.

“But now that the German ho got whacked and everything’s on hold we decided to come hangout with our girl,” Daisy finishes.

“Plus, you went and got yourself hitched to that fine specimen of man meat over there,” Verna says as she hitches a thumb towards Kane and I roll my lip into my mouth and bite it to keep from laughing. By the looks of him, Trent is not exercising that level of restraint.

“Seriously,” Marla adds. “I hadn’t ever gotten a good look at his ass before. But if I was thirty years younger—”

“More like forty years younger,” Verna cackles. “And then you’d still be a cougar.”

“Thanks, asshole,” Marla replies to her best friend. “If I was forty years younger and still had two good hips, I’m not sure if I could live through that kind of pounding. But I’d love to try.”

“Here, here!” Verna agrees.

“Nana!” Trent admonishes but his sweet grandmother just shrugs her shoulders in a what-are-you-going-to-do-about-it kind of a way and joins in the laughter.

“Thanks, ladies,” Kane says sweetly. “I think.”

“Oh,” Marla replies. “It was definitely a compliment.”

My face burns bright red with mortification and I wonder if the Earth could please open up and swallow me whole right now. That would be great. I realize when Verna replies that I didn’t keep those thoughts in my head but instead shared them allowed.

“But if the Earth swallows you whole you can’t get boned like that again,” she adds not at all helpfully and everyone laughs.

“Granny!” Shelby yells.

“What?” Verna chimes back.

“You embarrassed Sophie!”

“Oh, pish posh,” she says. “Sophie knows how much we love her and besides it’s true.”

“You guys love me?” I ask in a small voice and everyone turns to me with soft faces.

“Of course we love you,” Shelby answers on a soft voice. “You’re one of us.”

“That’s right, darling girl, you’re a Dangerous Dame now and the only way out is toes first,” Marla says.

“Jesus, Nana,” Trent groans. “Stop threatening death.”

“I’m not threatening anything,” she says. “Being a Dame is dangerous work. I mean come on, it’s in the name!”

THE CONTESSA'S BROOCH Teaser

Excerpt #2
The emergency vehicles traveled faster than the speed limit and soon were out of eyesight. It didn’t matter because the red glow in the sky led me to the fire’s location, a residential area on Broad Street.

I parked a block away. Close enough for my purposes. I knew the house because I thought about buying it to fix up before I started working at the library. Built in the ’50s, it wasn’t anything fancy, just a solid little house that had seen better days. No one lived there when Sarah, my real estate expert, took me on a walk-thru, and I prayed no one had moved in since then.

I couldn’t resist getting out and walking a little closer but staying well back from the police lines. I wanted a better view, not of the fire, but the people in the crowd. Was one of them the mystery videographer? With all the cell phones aimed at the incident, it would be impossible to isolate any one person as the guilty party. Unless they did something that made them stick out, like sneaking in under the police tape. I eliminated the ones in pajamas, rousted from the neighboring homes as a safety precaution. But everyone was behaving themselves.

The water brigade made their appearance, with cheerful smiles and those silly purple vests they wore. They stood as close as possible to the fire lines. It was like those water stations they use along the routes of marathons. Every now and then, a firefighter grabbed a bottle from them and emptied it before returning to work. The volunteers always cleaned up after themselves, so they were tolerated.

With a loud crash, the roof caved in. The shower of sparks fell as far as the police lines, and the people in front forced their way backward. Torrents of water from every available firehose streamed through the sky to quell the hotspot. Steam and ash from the fire drifted throughout the neighborhood. The stench of smoke and over-heated chemicals burned my nose and I sneezed several times.

Synopsis
Their prom night ended in a jail cell with forty of their closest friends. But that’s hardly the worst thing that happened to them…

When the principal announces prom is canceled this year, senior Riley Hart is determined to save it. Armed with little more than her own enthusiasm, she ends up working closely with Owen Locklear, who is more than completely off-limits. Because he’s the boyfriend of her ex-BFF, Catherine Reed. Still, Owen knows Riley better than almost anyone, and his charming ideas for turning the prom upside-down and backward win Riley over.

Catherine is willing to join Owen and Riley on the prom committee, but only because her legacy as prom queen is at stake. She’s already suffocating under the weight of her parents’ expectations for after senior year, and compared to that, ensuring prom happens should be easy. At least until everything starts to go wrong.

First they lose their deposit. Then they book a band full of octogenarians. And lose their venue… Twice.

Riley will have an unforgettable teenage experience, damn it, if it’s the last thing she does…

Excerpt #1
RILEY – TWO MONTHS UNTIL PROM

I turn the corner and glance over my shoulder, hoping to catch another glimpse of Owen’s familiar dark brown hair poking above the crowd. When I recognize his spiky-messy style, my breath catches in my chest. With a wave to Catherine, he breaks away and trails behind me, leaving half a hallway between us. I veer off into an empty stairwell and wait.

Eventually, he makes his appearance, towering over me in the cramped space. Although he’s not as big as the basketball players, Owen stands at least six inches taller than me, which means I’m always looking up at him when we cross paths in school. We met during recess on the first day of kindergarten, when we decided to join up with Catherine and fight the imaginary monsters hiding under the playground equipment. Years later, Catherine has found other things to do with her free time, but Owen and I still fight monsters together—virtual ones, in our favorite video game.

“Haven’t caught up with you on Q-Chat lately,” he says, breaking into his familiar wide smile, one that could take down the entire cheerleading squad. Though it’s a struggle, I manage to remain upright. But just barely.

“Sorry, but I’ve been busy.” I speak too fast and nearly drop the bag of tech club pamphlets I printed last night. Talking to Owen in real life always seems to throw me off. It’s much easier to pretend I don’t have a crush on him when we’re battling aliens online.

Faking disappointment, he shakes his head. “Priorities, Riley. Immortal Quest released an update yesterday with an all-new army of zombies. They suck your life force away, and I really need your shields for protection.” His blue eyes brighten as he steps closer. “C’mon, Evil Skater Girl.”

I raise my finger to my lips. “Shhh! We promised never to call each other by our Quest names in school!” No one needs to know about my secret virtual superhero persona. At eighteen, I’m practically a grandma in the Immortal Quest world.

“Yeah, you’re right.” He backs away, darting his eyes toward the hallway, probably checking for his girlfriend. “Just…log on once in a while, okay? Keep me company.”

“Doesn’t Catherine do enough of that?” The words rush from my mouth before I think about them. I really don’t want to know what he and Catherine do when they’re alone together, but for some reason I can’t resist bringing her up, if only to remind myself that he’s in love with the girl who tossed me aside without a second thought way back in middle school.

Owen flashes his smile again. “No one does it like you, ESG.” He hikes his backpack higher on his shoulder and turns to go. Before I call him out on the name thing again, he says, “By the way, did you hear anything about prom being canceled?”

“What? Is that even possible?”

He breaks out in a small smile. “According to Cat, it is.” His smile falters before he picks it back up. “So, you haven’t heard anything?”

“No, but if I do, I’ll let you know.”

With a wave, he ducks around the corner and out of sight. I count to ten before continuing on to my locker.

Excerpt
My phone bounces around on the nightstand as it softly plays Britney Spears. It’s time to work, bitch. And this morning I have a practice skate with Luc. We have been working so hard these past few weeks and things are finally coming together. I am so thankful for this opportunity that I don’t want to let Luc and our coaches down so I try and get to the rink extra early so that I am warmed up and ready to go. I don’t want any of them waiting on me.

I look back over my shoulder to where Kane is sleeping. His eyes are still closed, and his breaths come evenly. Good, he’s still asleep and after last night’s revelations, I don’t want to wake him up. We are finally in a good place again and I’m not going to throw Luc in his face the very next day. I’m not going to be the one to rock the boat this time.

I gently lift the covers and cautiously slide out from underneath them. If I was focused on anything other than not waking Kane up, I would have noticed that he, and other parts of his anatomy, were very much awake long before his arm tightens around my waist and hauls me back into the bed.

“Eeek!” I squeal as he surprises me.

“Where are you going, Tink?” Kane rasps, his voice still husky with sleep and other things. “I don’t know if I’m ready to let you leave this bed yet.”

“Well, you don’t have a choice because I have an early practice this morning,” I inform him with a little softness in my voice so that he knows that I am not choosing the rink over him. “But I’ll be back later.”

Kane lets go of me and I slide out of bed and start pulling clothing that I had left here before we stopped speaking from drawers. I notice that Kane is flinging the covers back and pushing up from the bed to stand nude in all his morning glory—and I do mean glory—which I see prominently when he turns to the side before facing away again. His firm backside is turned towards me and I watch the muscles in his body play as he stretches out.

“Wh-what are you doing?” I ask before I give my brain a chance to catch up with my mouth. I should probably get some coffee in me before I sign my life away.

“Getting up,” he says with a smirk playing about his mouth.

“I . . . uhh . . . I see that,” I mumble as I stare at his erection. I can’t help it. It’s like there’s a sexual tractor beam that draws my eyes directly to his long, hard cock.

“My eyes are up here, baby,” he says with a chuckle and my eyes snap up to his. “I meant that I was getting out of bed to go with you.”

“Oh . . .” Well, that’s not at all embarrassing. Kane has the ability to wipe all thought from my brain with a set of glutes that I know for a fact that I can bounce a quarter off of them because I have already tried.

I lose my train of thought as I watch Kane pull a pair of lighter wash jeans out of a drawer and slide them up his legs without underpants. They way that the smooth material molds to his muscular legs and . . . other assets shows how well-worn they are. Not to mention spending the day knowing that there is nothing standing in between my hand and what I so desperately want but a few buttons and some well worn material is going to play havoc in my mind all morning. He pulls a white t-shirt over his head then grabs a gray hoodie and tosses it on the bed before grabbing a pair of socks and running shoes.

“Sophie?” he calls my name making me snap to attention.

“What?” I ask still distracted by the thought of him going commando. I wonder if I would be able to tell if he was even a little bit hard because the material is so soft and pliable. If I was paying more attention to what I was trying not to pay attention to I would definitely have my answer.

“You were staring . . .” he trails off in explanation.

“Huh?” I slow blink once . . . twice . . . three times to clear the fog from my brain but all I can see is Kane’s huge . . . uhh . . .

“You’re staring.” He smirks. “And if you keep on staring at me like that Tink we’re going to be about an hour late.” That snaps me back into consciousness.

“No!” I shout as he prowls closer. “We don’t have time.”

“I’ll be quick,” he hums as he pushes me back onto the bed and somehow scooping up the shirt of his that I slept in last night and pulling it over my head to throw down to the floor like the practiced sex magician that he is—leaving me naked.

“How quick?” I ask before I can stop my mouth from asking what my brain knows that it shouldn’t. I don’t have time to play with Kane. I can’t be late for practice.

“Fast,” Kane says as he flicks open the buttons on those jeans that he wears all too well and lets his hard length spring free. He leans down over me. And I was going to be early anyways, now I’ll just be on time. That’s good enough. I can afford to be fast with Kane.

“Not too fast,” I complain.

“No, baby. Not too fast,” he says just before he crashes his mouth down on mine and slides deep inside me. Kane hits that spot that makes my eyes roll back in my head and all rational thought goes right out the window.

Synopsis
Love isn’t supposed to hurt.

Hedge witch Shannon Baldos isn’t looking for love. She isn’t even looking for sex. She’s looking for the courage to finally leave her gaslighting husband’s ass. So the last thing she needs is a distraction, like the town’s land-grabbing yet oh so sexy property developer, Adam St. John.

Then again, maybe a little distraction is exactly what she does need.

Growing up under the domineering thumb of her maternal grandmother, and then married to a misogynistic husband, thirty-nine-year-old Shannon Baldos has learned that love hurts. For almost seven years she’s lived under the thumb of her abusive husband, all with the guise of wanting to give her son a stable home. The truth? She’s stayed because she’s a coward. Still is. But maybe, with heart fluttering, groin throbbing, Adam St. John by her side, or on top of her, under works too, she might discover some hidden courage and finally take her son and escape. As for falling for St. John and his pirate grin, not a chance. Rule #1: Don’t fall in love.

Referred to as an emotional train wreck, Wexford’s successful developer, Adam St. John, has rules. A lot of them. Created to keep him well-insulated from further pain and disappointment with regards to life, and love. At forty-nine, he’s quite happy with his life of solitude. With three divorces under his belt, he’s in no hurry to add a fourth. Besides, there are more than enough women willing to keep him warm at night. But when he meets the town’s green-eyed witch with the freckles splattered across the bridge of her nose, and the hips that sway under her flowing skirts, one night of passion leaves him craving more. Maybe it’s time to break a few rules.

In her newest novel, Breaking the Rules, Tinthia Clemant has woven a story about one brave woman’s determination to take back her life as she learns that love doesn’t always hurt.

Excerpt #2
The voices of the patrons inside Brewin’ Beans hummed steadily against the whirring and sputtering of the espresso machine. Like bees around a hive, customers waiting for their morning fix of caffeine hovered by the counter. From where she sat, Shannon had a full view of the entire inside of the café. Jimbo hated when she called the Beans a café. ‘For the love of Pete,’ he’d complain. ‘Call it what it is, a goddamn coffee shop.’

Of the handful of establishments in Wexford, the Beans was her favorite place to be. A friendly staff was always ready to serve her, and the coffee was as good as any European bistro. Of course, she’d never been to Europe, but she imagined it to be true. Plus, her scones were featured daily in the bakery case.

And, of course, there was Jimbo. She sipped her lukewarm espresso and followed his movements. At six feet seven inches tall, three feet wide, with a shock of white hair, matching bushy eyebrows, and a chest-length beard, he was hard to miss. When she’d first met him, she’d immediately thought Old Saint Nick had decided owning a coffee shop in a small town in New Hampshire was the way to spend his off-time from the North Pole. Jimbo even sported the portly belly that shook whenever he laughed, which was often.

A local kid who would ‘never amount to anything,’ Jimbo Albie had spent his middle- and high-school years playing football, stealing cars, and getting high. After he graduated, he bought a motorcycle and moved to Manchester, where he partied, sold drugs, and spent a good deal of time behind bars.

If it hadn’t been for Adam St. John dragging Jimbo into rehab and then back to Wexford, he would have wasted away in some obscure alley. The developer had helped Jimbo buy the building she was sitting in and had handled all the renovations.

Shannon wrinkled her nose, distaste tinging her saliva. Being a good friend to Jimbo didn’t excuse St. John for what he really was: a money-hungry, land-grabbing jerk.

She felt no love for the residents of Wexford, but the wooded areas were magnificent, and St. John was mowing them down for his grotesque housing developments. If she’d been allowed to join the Conservation Committee, she’d be working hard to stop him, but nope, witches need not apply. She’d curtly been informed this by the committee’s chairperson and self-appointed witch hunter, Leeann, two e’s-two n’s. The woman needed to get a better way of introducing herself: ‘Hi, I’m Leeanntwo e’s-two n’sChambers.’ Seriously, who introduces themselves like that? Every town had someone like her, the busybody who made sure her perky little nose was in everything.

Shannon signaled toward the two women who entered the café. The larger of the women walked up to the booth with a determined stride, unkempt frosted hair pushed behind her ears, cheeks, normally flushed, blazing cherry red. “I have a showing, so we need to make this snappy.” Cantankerous at times, opinionated often, and Irish to the core, Denise ‘Dee’ Boyle had a take-charge manner, and that morning was no different. Peering out from under hooded eyelids, she studied Shannon’s petite coffee cup. “You’re drinking espresso?” Her husky voice was thicker than usual, indicating a hangover. “Why don’t you drink real coffee like normal people?” Dee waved her hand at Shannon. “Switch sides, I need to see the door.”

“It’s great to see you too, Dee,” Shannon said, exiting her seat. “Morning, Peg.” She paused to hug the tall redhead standing behind Dee.

“Everything okay, Shan?” Peg stooped to place a light kiss on Shannon’s cheek.

“Yeah, fine. I—”

“Stop talking,” Dee said. “Peg, sit. What do you both want? My treat. The Holstein house sold, and my commission check was through the roof. Jeff and I stayed up late celebrating, and now I can’t get rid of this stinking headache. Shan, do you have any of your magic shit with you?”

“Hmm, let me see, what do I want?” Peg said, tapping her chin with her index finger.

“This isn’t rocket science, Peg,” Dee snapped. “Make a decision.”

“I’ll have a double latte and one of Shannon’s scones,” Peg decided.

“Same for me,” Shannon added. “But no scone.” She handed Dee a small packet of white powder. “For your headache.”

“Why the two of you can’t drink normal coffee is beyond me.” Dee took the powder and looked at the line near the counter. “That’s bullshit. I’m not waiting in that. I’ll go round and corral Jimbo from behind.”

Dee marched away, leaving Peg to roll her eyes and Shannon chuckling.

“I wouldn’t want to be Jimbo.”

“He’s a big boy; he can handle Dee.” Peg removed a mirror from her purse and handed it to Shannon. “Hold this, will you?”

Pegchristened MargaretO’Neil was the princess of the group. Tall and slender, with the grace of a swan, she was also the referee, often separating Shannon and Dee when they locked horns. She positioned Shannon’s hand in the exact right spot and smiled, revealing straight, polished-to-a-brilliant-shine teeth. “Perfect, don’t move.” She removed a hair clip, and a mass of curls the color of an October sunset tumbled over slender shoulders covered by a pink cotton hoodie. Repositioning the lion’s mane back on top of her head, she loosened a few strands and allowed them to coil around her neck. Frowning, she said, “I hate my nose.” She took the mirror and closed it with a decisive snap. “When I’m rich, I’m going to get it fixed.”

“I wouldn’t,” Shannon advised. “Your nose gives you a Greek-goddess look.”

“Thanks, Shan, but I’ve never liked it. I guess it goes back to being given nicknames like Honker when I was in grade school.”

“Yeah, well, grade school can be a tough time for kids,” Shannon said. “How’s the studio? I keep meaning to get over there, but I never seem to find the time.” She diverted her eyes, not wanting Peg to see that she was lying. She had plenty of time to visit her friend’s yoga studio, but when Justin had found her mat in the closet, he’d torn it in half, telling her to clean the house if she needed exercise.

“Don’t worry about it. Yoga isn’t for everyone.”

“I like yoga. I used to do it when Chad was first born. It’s just that…”

Peg reached out and patted Shannon’s hand. “Really, I mean it. It’s okay.”

Shannon bit at her lip and nodded. Hoping a change of topic might appease her guilt at being a shit friend, she asked, “How’s Haley?”

“She’s a fucking witch.” Peg covered her mouth with her fingers. “Oh, sorry, I don’t mean your kind of witch. I’m thinking of the ones with pointy noses and green skin.”

“I get it, but try and find another word. What’s she done this time?”

“She picks fights with me constantly. I can’t even breathe without her having something nasty to say.”

“Has she started her…?”

“Her period? Yes, and that’s part of the problem. She and I have the same cycle, so we’re both wit—bitches at the same time of the month. The other day she called me…” Peg leaned forward, her voice lower than a whisper. “…a cunt.” Sitting back, she added, “What do you think about that?”

“I think my grandmother would have washed my mouth out with a gallon of bleach if I had called her that, though I wanted to. What’d you do?”

“I locked her in her bedroom, which was a waste of time because she went out her window. I swear, I’m at the end of my rope.”

It was Shannon’s turn to pat Peg’s hand. “I’m sure it’ll get better, but I’m glad it’s you and not me. Girls can be mean.” And adults, she’d almost added, her thoughts cycling back to Justin. The names he’d called her over the years would shock Peg.

“Tell me about it. I’d love to send her to a camp this summer. Someplace far away, like China.”

Dee flopped onto the seat next to Peg and reached for a napkin. She wiped her face and complained, “It’s a madhouse up there. You should have seen the looks I got when I walked behind the counter.” The damp napkin dropped on the table. “Shannon, your scones are sold out. I guess the new flavor was a hit. And I ordered a pot of real coffee. You two can take it or leave it.”

“I’ll make more tonight,” Shannon said. “Where’s the coffee?”

“Jimbo’s daughter is bringing them over with some bagels. He needs to do something about the AC in this place.” A second crumpled napkin joined the first. “What were you two talking about?”

“Nothing, really,” Peg answered. “My evil daughter and that you two haven’t come by for a free class.”

“You know I don’t like yoga.” Dee centered her hazel eyes on Shannon. “Right now I want to know why the urgent meeting? Is Justin divorcing you so he can marry Shelby?” Based on her laughter, Dee seemed to enjoy her little joke.

Peg bumped Dee’s shoulder, clearly not amused. “Not funny.”

“Whatever. So what’s up, Shan? Wait a minute. Here comes our food.”

A petite young girl arrived at the table and set down a coffee pot, mugs, and food. “Here you go, ladies. Dad said to yell if you want anything else.” She did a pirouette on her white Keds and almost skipped back to the front counter.

“I can’t even imagine how that cute little wisp has Jimbo’s genes.” Dee snorted and grabbed the cinnamon raisin bagel. “Maybe she’s the mailman’s.”

Peg daintily selected the plain bagel. “You might recall Jimbo was a good-looking guy in his younger days.”

“Yeah, was,” Dee answered. “Not any more. That’s what drugs and alcohol does to a person. Maybe it’s true that St. John got it on with Jimbo’s wife.”

“Dee, don’t even kid about things like that,” Peg said.

Dumbfounded, Shannon stared at Dee. “I can’t believe you said that.”

“What? It’s always been a rumor. Ask Jimbo. He’ll tell you.”

“That’s not the point,” Peg continued. “Adam wouldn’t do something like that to his friend.”

Dee snorted and smeared a piece of her bagel with cream cheese. “He’s St. John. He’d fuck Malcolm’s wife if given the chance.”

“Who’s Malcolm?” Shannon asked.

Peg gave Dee an incensed glare. “Adam’s half-brother, and he wouldn’t sleep with another man’s wife.”

The two entered into an argument about St. John’s integrity while Shannon sipped her coffee. If the rumors were true, Adam St. John was a manwhore. Not that there was anything wrong with sleeping around. Back in the day, she’d played a robust game of musical beds…and hallways…and cars, along with an elevator or two, sleeping bags, and even a rowboat. At any rate, his promiscuity had nothing to do with her reasons for not liking him. Since she’d never even met the man, she had no idea if he was a blowhard, as Justin called him; her opinion was based purely on what the developer was doing to the town.

Dee waved her spoon. “Snap to it, Shan. I’ll be leaving soon.”

Shannon lowered her cup.

“Give her time,” Peg said. “She’s thinking.”

“She’s not thinking; she’s daydreaming. Come on, Shan, spit it out, whatever you called us here for.”

Shannon inhaled and released air through her teeth. She shouldn’t share information like wanting a divorce; it was a private matter. If she’d learned one thing from her grandmother, it was not to air dirty laundry for the world to see.

Dee stirred her coffee with an impatient tapping. “Any day now.”

Shannon lowered her hands to her lap. “It’s nothing. I shouldn’t have bothered you two. I’m sorry.”

“Bull. Come on, tell us. I promise I’ll keep my big mouth shut,” Dee said.

With a quick intake of air, Shannon blurted, “I’m thinking of leaving Justin.”

The gaping mouths facing her told her she should have started with a more subtle lead-in.

Author Tinthia Clemant

About the Author
Tinthia Clemant was born in Medford, Massachusetts, over sixty years ago. Her childhood was a happy one. She lived in a loving home with her three siblings, mother and father. Her imagination soared as she passed the days enacting the scenes from the stories that spun through her mind.

Tinthia always wrote. From the time she first picked up a pencil, or perhaps it was a crayon, she wrote. Stories about searching for secrets. Stories about joy and sadness; friendship and betrayal; and, of course, stories about true love.

She self-published her first book by stapling six pages together. Her marketing plan was simple–give the book to her mother for Mother’s Day. Marketing her indie-published books has gotten a whole lot harder but she pushes on, knowing the worlds she creates will take each reader on a magical journey.

A romantic women’s fiction author, Tinthia fell in love with romance when she witnessed, at the impressionable age of five, the power of true love. On the silver screen of the Meadow Glen drive-in, she watched Prince Phillip defeat Maleficent’s tangled web of thorns and the fire-breathing dragon so he could save his lady love. As Phillip pressed his lips against Sleeping Beauty’s, she understood the power of true love’s first kiss.

As a hopeful romantic, Tinthia has searched far and wide for that special someone who will take her breath away. Unfortunately, she has yet to find love’s magical kiss. However, she learned a lot about herself along the way and uses these lessons to weave her stories and the strong (and older) heroines she brings to life.

Tinthia lives on the banks of the Concord River and spends her time teaching science at a local community college, gardening, painting, tending her flock of Mallards (follow her natural history blog at: concordriverlady.com), reading, and, of course, writing about journeys, disappointment, joy, and true love. Her two favorite men are Ben and Jerry and she wishes they would bring back the summer flavor, Blueberry Cheesecake.

Excerpt #2
I’m drifting on the edge of sleep. I want to hold on as long as I can, to drink in more of her. I roll my head to my right and open my eyes. She looks like an angel dressed in the white of my sheets. She’s gently hugging her pillow and her chestnut locks are strewn above her. I want to touch her but I don’t want to disturb this pristine picture.

The dichotomy of the beginning and end of the last twenty-four hours is not lost on me. I began the frame in the lowest of places. I had lost a dream again. That caged feeling is now gone. I know there is so much more to work out but I know now there is hope. Hope for a future I actually want. Hope for a freedom I thought was impossible. This beauty beside me. Maybe she heard my hamster wheel this time because she slides her body to hug me instead of her pillow. I draw lazy lines from her lower back up her spine to the base of her neck.

Hope for me came in the form of this girl.

Hope is rooted in our love.

In moments, our breathing syncs and her warmth lulls me into a peaceful sleep.

Excerpt
Kaylee: Nick, this is Kaylee. I’m on a burner phone. I’m in trouble.

Nick: Where are you?
Kaylee: Slowly. Look up.

Nick’s in the coffee shop where we first met two years ago. There are two drinks at his table, a black coffee for him, and an iced latte. We were supposed to meet here ten minutes ago. Looks like he ordered for me. I smile at that. I’ve wanted him since the day I first saw him. But he’s never indicated that he sees me as anything but a skilled asset for his team.

He casually stretches his arms over his head and leans back in his wooden caféchair. He’s in his usual get-up, a black T-shirt stretched over his biceps and a leather jacket loaded with weapons. The shop is crowded, there’s a line at the counter, and all the tables are taken. Even so, there’s a space around Nick, like people can sense that he’s more

Three men in sunglasses and black suits block the doorway, scanning the shop. Nick takes them in and his shoulders tighten. As a security expert and a former Ranger, he knows a threat when he sees one.

They’re here for me.

Nick feigns a yawn and finally brings his eyes to the ceiling. The only acknowledgement that he sees me is a slow blink. I’m in the HVAC, peering out from the ceiling vent.

Not for nothing, but this isn’t the first time I’ve crawled through an air vent.

The girls decided that food would do me good, so I pulled myself together and followed them through the field, across the bridge and back into town. The street lamps flickered as we wandered around wondering if we should go to the restaurant with the hung-over backpackers splayed out watching reruns of The Simpsons, or the restaurant with the hungover backpackers splayed out watching reruns of Family Guy when someone called out, “Hey, Canada!”

Turning back towards the river, we saw three guys who were part of our musical uprising on the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong. Lana called back, “Hawaii!”

Chad, Kelly and Felix were fresh off a bus from Luang Prabang and also in search of sustenance. As we stood debating food options, Chad’s brown eyes raked over Lana, who had taken the time to brush her hair and slap a bit of makeup on. “Lana, are you Lana Brooks, the TV weathergirl?”

“Former weathergirl,” she said, batting her thick eyelashes.

“I thought it was you!” he said, stepping closer. “Guys, remember when I showed you that Chive article of the world’s hottest weather girls? This is the one from Canada.”

I smiled as Lana basked in the attention the guys were giving her. Some people collected souvenirs along their travels, but Lana collected admirers. Felix’s green cat-like eyes glittered as he realized he was standing in the presence of a Chive-worthy hottie.

“Dude,” Kelly said, smoothing his shaggy, dirty-blond hair before shaking her hand. “It is a privilege and an honour to make your acquaintance.” “Alright, alright, can we please choose somewhere to eat, please?” Jade huffed crossing her arms.

And, with that the boys led us to a restaurant perched over the waters of the river that featured neither animated sitcoms nor hung-over backpackers and began our first night out in Vang Vieng.

Synopsis
Make no mistakes about it. I know what I look like to others. Young, government-aided, pregnant mom. They see Lucy on my hip, and they see a mistake. I mean, why else would someone have a child so young, right? They couldn’t be more wrong. I’m too busy most days between parenting, work, and finishing up my last year of nursing school to let their judging gaze tear me down until he moves in the vacant house next to the apartments I live in.

His cold, blunt observation of us doesn’t differ from any other stranger. He doesn’t know me, but he’s already painting a picture of who he thinks I am in his mind. He judges my very round belly, Lucy’s inability to leave him alone, the bags under my eyes, and the fact that I can care less what I look like anymore.

He’s a rude guy. Stays that way for months too. Then something happens, I’m not even sure what. Judgmental Guy decides Lucy and me—as well as baby Eli, are worth his friendship.

Turns out, Judgmental Guy isn’t too mean—okay, he kind of still is. But he graduates to Elijah. I build an unlikely friendship with him which deems it necessary for him to start smiling around me and my kids.

I’m wrong again. Elijah isn’t rude. He’s terrifying. His strange acts of kindness are unraveling me. Elijah is only my friend.

Right?

Oh, fudge. I think I’m wrong. Again.

–full-length single mom slow burn romance.

There was a moment of panic. For a second, I couldn’t see any Funyuns. I realized why. There was only one bag left, and it was partially hidden by all the Lay’s chips next to it. I nodded and smiled as if to say, “It’s all good” when two little hands shot up and snatched the bag before I could.

“Whoa,” I said, staring down at the blonde pigtails.

She slowly turned, peered up, and arched her brow at me curiously. “Are you talking to me?” The kid couldn’t be more than three and there she was completely alone and stealing my damn Funyuns!

“How about you give me those Funyuns?” I asked nicely.

She stared down at the chips in her tiny grip—those were mine—then looked back up. “No. Get your own.” She turned to walk off.

“Where’re your parents? Little shits shouldn’t be all alone even if they’re becoming lil’ thieves at such a young age.”

She scowled, her tiny nose wrinkling up. “She’s right where I left her.” She pointed to a blonde head leaned over one of the freezer sections. The little girl was inspecting me when I glanced back down at her. I saw the way her eyes rolled over my arms before she frowned. “My papaw always tells my mom that tattoos are ugly on women.”

“Oh?” I tilted my head. “Your papaw sounds ugly.”

Her mouth fell open. “You have demons on your arms ’cause you’re one.”

I jumped and hissed. She startled, dropped the Funyuns, and ran screaming to her mom. I bent down, picked up my chips, and chuckled as I walked over to the next aisle and grabbed a pizza—something I could at least heat up easily—then went to the checkout where ugly grandpa’s evil thief helped her mom unload their shopping cart items.

Lil’ Thief gazed up, eyes widening then hardening as tough as one could look at her age. She saw the bag of chips in my hand and tapped her Mom’s side “Mom, mom,” she started.

“What is it, Lucy?” Her mother asked as she grabbed her purse and wheeled the cart forward as the cashier rung up her items. I took in the greasy blonde hair tucked into a messy bun. It probably had been a day or two since she shampooed it. From her chipped nails to her pale, tired face without makeup it was obvious she didn’t give two shits about her appearance. The longer I watched her, the more she irked me. I exhaled loudly as I imagined her living off the government. In a matter of minutes, she’d slide an EBT card through the slot to pay for her items.

Guilt washed over me. My ma had been in this shape while raising me, and most of the food on our table before she met Hank came from food stamps, yet I saw more people abuse the system, so my disdain was real every time I saw people like this one in a store.

No one was like Ma. She was her own breed, and she’d hang me for my petty thoughts, but I couldn’t stop myself.

“That demon worshipper stole my chips.”

Fucking hell. I went from the dude with demons on my arm to demon worshipper real quick. I’d hate to see what this child would have to say about my shops—creepy, demon portraits everywhere. The horror!

The mother’s head snapped up from her purse at her child’s voice. She peered around to where her daughter pointed—at me—before turning a pitiful shade of red. Her eyes were the brightest shade of blue I’d ever seen, or maybe it was because she was so pale and sickly looking. She blushed so hard it made her extremely noticeable.

“Lucy, that’s not nice! Why would you say that?” She wiped her face and tried hard not to stare at me as she spoke to her daughter.

“He stole my Funyuns!” Her daughter’s face was red too. Quite the match, the two of them.

The mom raised up, face squinted in pain as she placed her palm on her back, and that was when I noticed—holy, why hadn’t I noticed before? The woman was very pregnant. Just what society needed—another little terror running wild. She gestured toward the small chip bags beside me. “Grab a bag so I can pay. And apologize for saying that.”

The little girl scooted around the shopping cart and snatched a small bag of Funyuns before turning around to me. “Sorry.” She stuck out her tongue as she glared up at me from a perfect angle where her mom couldn’t see it. Sneaky.

“You should really get a hold on that,” I couldn’t point at the kid with my hands so full, but I jerked my head toward it so that she would understand I was talking about her kid.

“That?” The mom’s eyebrows went up a notch. She forgot the part where she was trying not to make eye contact with me as she frowned.

“Your kid,” I muttered.

“Right, kid,” she told me. “Not that.” She glanced down at her daughter. “Come on, Lucy. Step away from the bad man.”

I scoffed. “I guess that’s better than demon worshipper.”

She straightened up and glared at me. “Would you prefer it if we called you the devil?”

“Suits me.” Kids had no hope of not being little shits when their parents raised them to be just as uptight. I bet she’d love to hear the name of my shops as well.

She scowled and turned around to pay. It surprised me when I saw a debit card slide through the machine. So she had a man she lived off? Popping out babies just to keep him? You’d think she’d at least take better care of herself. “What?” she muttered when I was still staring at her.

I shrugged, unbothered. She closed up her purse, hollered for her kid again before waddling out the damn door.

Good riddance!

I dropped my stuff, slowly covering my eyes with my hands. What just happened finally sunk into my thick skull. I stole a kid’s chips. There was no end to my assholery.

It was a five-minute drive from the grocery store to my new house. The one thing I hated about the place I bought was that it was right next to the projects. I would likely hear all kinds of shit I didn’t want to, but I got a great deal and the house was amazing. Or at least Ma thought so, she was the one that decided for me.

I would live in it and pay for it but it didn’t matter what I thought. Apparently, anyway.

I really needed to stop letting her boss me around.

I could almost hear her saying that she’d stop after I found someone else to do it as I pulled into the driveway. Grabbing my grocery bags, I exited the truck. Before I could lock up, I heard a noise from the apartment lot next door.

“Lucy, I’m gonna need your help with these.”

Who knew why I walked around my truck to see when I’d recognized the familiar voice. The woman from the store was helping Lil’ Thief out of a car seat. The moment the kid’s feet hit the concrete, it was like her demon detector turned on. Her eyes darted around before landing on me.

One scrawny arm raised and pointed. “Demon worshipper!”

Ah, fuck.

Excerpt #2
“See, when I was a kid, I really liked hockey. Seven-year-old Colton was a Gretzky man, ya see. Do you know what amazing thing Gretzky is known for saying?”

He steps forward and cups my jaw in his palm.

“You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take,” I reply. It’s a lesson learned from my father, who loves every kind of sport you can imagine.

Cole’s brows knit then his lips curl up into a smile. “Damn, Sinclair. Funny, smart, sexy as fuck, and can quote Gretzky? Are you sure Dexter didn’t whip you up in his lab?”

I shrug, and can’t help but smile back at him. “Dad’s a sports fan.”

“Well, he’s a smart guy. So yeah, you miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take. Call me an optimist, but I’m taking a shot here,” he wags his finger back and forth between us. “And I don’t plan to miss.”

I have to admit; his confidence is a turn-on.

“Come on,” he says, nodding his head to the side as we head back so he can show me his locker.

Cole gives me a behind-the-scenes tour that would be my Dad’s dream come true. When we get to the case that holds dozens of trophies and awards, I swallow my pride and ask Cole to take a photo of me in front of the two Commissioner’s Trophies from the team’s World Series wins. He snaps a couple with my phone, then steps beside me, draping an arm around my shoulder and pulling me close to take a selfie with me.

After we tour the offices and the players’ area, he takes me by an equipment locker, and pulls out a couple of bats and helmets. We walk over to the practice area, and Cole takes me into the pitching machine cage.

He puts the helmet on my head and hands me a bat.

“Okay, so you’ve done this before?” He asks.

“At the batting cages next to the go-kart track, sure. Not in something like this,” I reply. “I’m not sure I’m ready for this.”

“Don’t worry. I can turn it way down. This thing doesn’t pitch as fast as I do,” he grins and winks. He knows he’s good at what he does for a living, and that’s not cockiness, it’s just a fact.

He drops the other bat on the ground in the corner and returns to where I’m standing.

“Okay, let me see your stance.”

I put the bat up, choke my hands together, and lean forward, jutting my ass out and giving it a little wiggle.

Cole crosses his arms and puts one hand up to his chin. “That’s not bad, actually,” he says with a chuckle.

He steps behind me and I stand upright as he wraps arms around me to show me how to hold the bat. He puts one hand on my shoulder and one on my hip as he bends me forward so I’m in the proper stance for batting, but I can’t help but notice that it would be the proper stance for something else as I feel him graze my backside ever so slightly.

“This feels exactly the same as what I was doing before,” I say.

“It totally is, but I got to feel your ass while I got you into position,” he says, grinning mischievously. “Okay, you ready?”

Alexandra slides the balcony door open. The cool night air drifts in and blows the curtains in a ripple. She steps out, grabs the rails, and turns her head skyward. Her green dress and the hair down her back float like the curtains. I follow Alexandra’s footprints in my rug out into the night…and her.

I slide my hands over her shoulders and slowly down her arms. “Would you tell me what you’re thinking? Are you regretting coming up here?”

Her head lowers. “No. Not even a little.”

I know she has more to say, so I let the noise of the city fill the silence between us until she continues. “I had a dream once I never told you about. I had a conversation with Lainey. It was in a place just like this.”

That admission hits my heart in an unexpected way. “You did?”

“Julian, when we were in Savannah, it was not the time to talk about her or ask questions unless you did. I know some of the loss you feel. I watched my dad. I felt things myself. The things that were most important to me then, and still are now, are that you are ready and that you know I would never, and will never, try to take her place. I want you to feel like you can share her with me. Knowing her will only allow me to know you better.

“I’ve thought that for a long time. So, much like I talked to my mother at the Falls, I talked to her in my alone time in Savannah. Being here, now, closes that chapter for me. I knew I would know if it wasn’t right the minute I stepped in here. My anxiety is gone.” She turns her head, so her chin touches her right shoulder. “I can breathe.”

God she’s stunning. Inside and out.

FORGIVEN ARE THE STARRY-EYED Teaser

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
My eyelids closed as if they were being drawn down by sluggish, unhurried weights. When I forced them open after several seemingly endless moments, nothing had changed. I could still make out a blurry image of Josh standing nearby, Mr. Thompson’s hands clenched firmly on Josh’s shoulders from behind. There was a crowd, I think, and muffled voices. The steel school locker felt cold against my back and I recognized the familiar feeling that lately seemed to just dwell and ache in my bones. Fear, I think it was, mixed with just enough madness to keep the blood racing through my veins … fast. Too fast.

“Why did you do that, Andrea?” Josh shouted in my direction.

My eyes fell closed again. I don’t remember what else he said. I just remember the feeling of each overly pronounced syllable piercing the air while he said it. I stared through the darkness that danced behind my heavy eyelids. What had I done?

I tried to pry open my hazy eyes to examine the faces of the expanding crowd as they stood, mouths agape. I only recognized a few. There were hardcover music books sprawled open on the tile floor at my feet. Confused, I looked to Josh, but the heavy silence of the room deafened any words he may have been saying. I gripped the ends of my soft, thin hair between my slender fingers and waited. Each thought sunk deeper than the last.

There was a poster taped sloppily against the locker behind me. I turned my head to face it and focused. The ends were curled up and there were ripples in the masking tape adorned to the edges. “Oakwood High School Invitational—TONIGHT” it read in handwritten purple block letters. There was a pixelated saxophone image pasted underneath the words, “Brought to you by Mr. Thompson and the Oakwood High Jazz Band.” I brought my hand up to trace the edges. The poster board felt crisp and thick under my fingertips. I could smell the aftermath of the permanent marker. The loud reverberating voice behind me got softer until it resembled a deep echo I could easily ignore. I started to pick at the tape from the bottom left corner of the poster until I felt the sticky residue ball up underneath my fingernail.

Suddenly the life reentered my body in one abrupt breath when I felt a strong tug on my arm. I turned and saw Ethan Marks. Everyone else was gone. Had it been minutes this time? Hours?

“Andrea! Come on,” he barked at me, interlacing my arm, tucking it quickly under his. He jerked me to a standing position and pulled me down the hall, speeding up his gate as I stumbled to catch up.

“Where’s Josh?” I asked worriedly, but he didn’t answer. We were silent as we walked through the empty hallway. I lifted my gaze, trying to catch Ethan’s eye, trying to read his thoughts. His light blue eyes, usually sparkling with laughter, were steely and somber as he charged forward, dragging me with him, away from the wreckage I’d caused.

He stopped short and took a deep breath. His eyes were unyielding and dismal as they studied me, and slowly his frustration melted into a deep sadness.

“What happened, Andrea? What was that back there?”

“I don’t know…” My voice began breaking. My thoughts were muddled beyond recognition and I couldn’t form the right words, or any words, to explain.

Ethan wrapped himself around me in a gentle, firm embrace. It felt kind. And warm. And wonderfully different. My muscles unclenched for the first time in months, and I didn’t know I was crying until I tasted the salt as it stained my face. I buried my head into Ethan’s chest as he tightened his hold on me. I wanted him to say something, to tell me everything would be all right, but we both knew better. So we just stood there, Ethan supporting me as I clasped the back of his cotton t-shirt between my fingers.

After a few minutes, I fully returned to my body as my breathing calmed. I steadied my stance and took a step backward, shakily holding Ethan’s forearms as I regained my balance. Wiping smudged mascara from my pale face, I met Ethan’s eyes and quickly looked down, fixating on a crack in the tile below me.

“Hey,” he started, “Andrea … it’s…”

“I’m okay. Ethan, I’m sorry. I’m sorry you had to … I’m sorry I … ugh your shirt.” I motioned to the tear stains on his light green tee that crept from his chest to his shoulder.

“Oh God, don’t worry about that. Andie, I just…”

“It’s fine.” I wiped my face and took a deep breath. “Thanks,” I said, squeezing Ethan’s hand and looking in his eyes sincerely, so he knew I meant it. “I should go. But thanks.” I shook my head and turned around to walk back into the havoc and face what I had done. I felt Ethan staring at me as I left. He was just another person whose life would’ve been better if he hadn’t met me. I swallowed, took a breath, and kept walking.

It was over for now, that latest incident, and there was no way to tell when there would be another one … but there would definitely be another one. I was too broken for it to be any other way.

They’ll change each other’s fate…

One fateful night Bobby Hannigan sustains a gunshot wound that could end his career as a police officer. If that’s taken from him, he doesn’t know what he’ll do. The only ray of hope is Teagan Shaughnessy—a kindhearted single mom who understands his struggles…

Teagan and her young son have just moved back to the Carolina coast to be near family. When she meets Bobby, the timing feels wrong, but everything else feels oh-so-right. Bobby and Teagan each had plans for their own futures. But they’re finding that those plans are meaningless if they can’t be together…

He was only five feet from the door when Teagan stepped in front of him. Bobby stopped short so he wouldn’t slam into her.

“Oh no. You are not doing this again.”

“Excuse me?”

With her arms crossed over her chest, she nodded. “This running away crap? I’m done with that.”

He still wasn’t sure he understood what she was getting at, and she must have figured that out.

“First time we met? You walked away after a plate almost slipped out of your hands.”

“Teagan…”

“Then you pretty much sprinted out of here last week after you hurt your shoulder.”

“I had ice cream first.”

She gave him a sour look. “And you didn’t come back like you said you would.” She stepped in close to him. “I prefer it when people honor their word.”

Now he was getting a little annoyed.

“I think if Anna hadn’t asked you to come today, I’d probably never have seen you again. I mean, sure, maybe at some Shaughnessy family event years from now, but other than that, you would have done whatever you could to avoid me. Except thanks to Anna, you did come back, and you’ve played with Lucas and by now he’s got some sort of hero-worship thing going on with you. So if you think I’m going to just let you pull another disappearing act, you’re crazy!”

She was doing her best to keep her voice down, but there was no mistaking how angry she was. Now what was he supposed to do? Or say?

Teagan must have taken his silence for something else because she let out a huff of annoyance and stepped aside, motioning toward the door. “Fine. Whatever. Just go.”

He heard her annoyance, but he saw her disappointment. And that got to him more than anything else.

Instead of walking out the door, he advanced on her. Her eyes went wide and she took a step back, even as he took another toward her.

“You’re wrong,” he said, his voice low and gruff. “I did want to see you again. Since the day we met, I’ve wanted to see you again. Even after I stormed off like a jackass, all I could think about was how good it would be to see you again.”

Teagan took two steps back and hit the wall. Bobby moved in until they were toe-to-toe. “I don’t like asking anyone for help or needing help, but the fact that I kept embarrassing myself in front of you? It was almost more than I could stand.”

“Bobby, you had nothing to be embarrassed about. I totally understand what you’re dealing with,” she argued.

But he shook his head. “You don’t. You can’t,” he countered. “I’m just a man, Teagan, and I can’t help but have a little pride. I don’t like looking weak. I don’t like being weak. If we had met at any other time—”

“But we didn’t,” she whispered.

Yeah, it was crazy to wish for something he couldn’t have. In a perfect world, he wouldn’t have gotten shot. In a perfect world, he would have been confident enough to ask her out. And in a perfect world, he’d have every right to close the distance between them and kiss her.

She swallowed hard, her big blue eyes never blinking, and watched him as if waiting for…something.

“What is it you want from me, Teagan? You want me to apologize for walking away? For not coming back? What? Tell me what it is you’d like me to do.”

He hoped and prayed she wanted the same thing he did.

“I want you to stop running. You have nothing to fear from me,” she said, brutal in her frankness. “I don’t care that you’re still recovering. I don’t care that you may need help from time to time. But I expect honesty from my friends, Bobby. Always.”

Friends.

The kiss of death.

Dammit.

So many retorts were on the tip of his tongue, yet he couldn’t speak. Friends? So the attraction he’d been feeling was all one-sided? For a man who never had to put much effort into getting a woman, this was like being hit in the face with the ball all over again.

“Friends,” he finally said.

She nodded. “It’s all I can offer you.” Apparently, he was that transparent. “My main priority is Lucas, and I’m not looking to get involved with anyone. Especially someone who…” She paused and looked down at the floor.

“Someone who what?” he prompted, feeling more than a little annoyed now.

After a moment, she looked back up at him. “Someone with a history of being a serial dater,” she said defiantly. “If I were single, no kids, it would be one thing, but I have my son to worry about. I don’t get involved in casual relationships. I can’t. As it is, I was scared even to let you come and watch him today, because other than my dad, Lucas hasn’t had any other male role models. Now that I see how quickly he bonded with you, I regret my selfishness.”

“How the hell were you selfish?”

“I was desperate to have a day to myself!” she cried. “To get my nails done and my hair cut and do all the things I haven’t had the time to do in forever. And now I’m going to be hearing all about you for who knows how long!”

Now he was thoroughly confused.

“So now I’m not good enough even to have around as a friend?” he asked incredulously.

“That’s not what I’m saying, Bobby. I’m saying…I don’t want to confuse Lucas. I don’t want him getting attached to someone who has no interest in sticking around.”

Again the questions about Lucas’s father came to mind, but he was too wrapped up in all the ways Teagan was insulting him right now to ask.

He leaned in close. “You don’t know anything about me.” He meant to sound menacing, and he felt like he pulled it off.

“I know enough. People talk,” she replied confidently.

“People? What people?”

“Quinn,” she said with a smug smile. “He told me all about you.”

If he thought he was angry before, it was nothing compared to how he felt right now. How dare his brother-in-law say anything derogatory about him! That crap was supposed to be all ancient history.

“You know my history with your cousin,” he countered. “Of course he was going to talk trash about me. And why would you even ask him? Why not just come to me if you wanted to know something?”

“Because you were usually walking away. When was I supposed to ask you anything?”

Okay. She had a point. But still…

This wasn’t getting them anywhere. He wasn’t doing himself any favors with the way he was acting right now, and thanks to Quinn, she already had a bad opinion of him, one that he would have to fight. Stepping away from her, he raked a hand through his hair and let out a weary sigh. Maybe it was time to just let this go. His life was total crap right now, and she wasn’t looking to get involved with anyone, so why was he fighting this?

When he faced her again, he had his answer.

Because she was beautiful.

Because she challenged him.

Because she had the potential to break his heart.

In a perfect world, all the obstacles would be removed. But this wasn’t a perfect world and he was an imperfect man. And because he had nothing left to lose, he leaned in and kissed her.

RAVEN ACOUSTICS Teaser

Excerpt
Deadline day had arrived.

The intimidating man sitting across from me in his ivory tower office had given me plenty of time to decide.

“What’s it to be, Errol?” Quinn said. His attention was squarely on his phone. I could be forgiven for thinking he couldn’t care less about my answer.

Today, I needed to sign the recording contract with The Dark Side record label or walk away. Quinn Saunders who owned the label had a plan that had played out to perfection. I’d won a talent contest, with my real name and my true passion for singing soul music. Transforming from Casey Lowe, rock band front man to Errol Thomas, solo soul singer was the best move I could have made and it was all thanks to Quinn.

When I saw Donovan Carter in the recording booth at my old label, a year ago, singing a Fragile song, I knew I had to leave Red & Black. When I watched Donovan sing the track, I could see Erin’s reflection in the glass wall of the studio. She’d given me the same proud smile years ago. That was when I was her favourite, before her husband Alex and long before Donovan.

The Dark Side record label building had stunning views across London. I loved coming up to the city to see Quinn. He’d coached me in the ways of the business and how to make a splash. His genius idea to use my real name and have the big reveal at the contest completely blinded all of them at Red & Black. For a moment, seeing Erin’s face when I shouted at Donovan about his sister made it all worthwhile. She doubted him and his innocence in what had happened. For a moment Erin was on my side. I hadn’t felt that in years, not since she danced with Alex Devlin at Green’s Music Venue. The night she left our friendship on the floor and went to him.

“Hell yes, I want this contract, pass me the pen.”

I jumped up from the leather sofa to reach for the contract. Quinn slapped his hand down hard on the stack of papers.

“Are you absolutely sure Errol? I’ll make you a worldwide sensation, but you’re going to have to play a role to get it.”

“I don’t care. All I want to do is to perform on stage and for everyone to know my name. I can sing, I’ve got the looks, and I don’t care what else I need to do.”

“Good lad,” Quinn said, flashing me a conspiratory smile. He took the pen from his inside jacket pocket and handed it over. The pen cost more than everything I owned. Everything about Quinn screamed wealth, and I wanted some of that money.

I scrawled my signature, using my real name in all the places the yellow sticky tabs told me to sign. The deal was done.

“What happens next?” I asked.

I’d retaken my seat on the sofa, watching the boats sail up the Thames river. Quinn had moved to the other side of his office into the gloom. The sun shone brightly in through the windows but only reached half of the floor space. Quinn’s black suit enabled him to blend in with the darkness, and I couldn’t see what he was doing.

“You wait for my call, lad. My PR people will be in touch soon with our game plan.”

“Am I going to lay down some tracks today?”

“Not yet.” I heard his irritation, I could have kicked myself for being over eager. Playing it cool never came easily to me. “We need to get everything in place first. We can take our time, get it right to make you a superstar.”

Quinn turned his back to take a call, dismissing me from the conversation. It wasn’t until he slipped through a side door in his office and his PA came in to collect the signed papers that I understood I was dismissed for the day.

“Have a great day, Errol,” she said with a smile that told me it had been many years since she’d had a good day.

I muttered my thanks to her retreating back, drank the glass of water in front of me and took one more look at Quinn’s office. Over the last couple of years, this had been our HQ for planning. Quinn discussed with me the next step in getting away from Maverick and Red & Black label. Years of planning and here I was, the ink still wet on the contract that would take me to superstardom.

Rubbing my closed fist against my chest as I left Quinn’s empty cold office, I looked for any familiar faces to chat with. I was still used to the Red & Black mansion where everything was open plan. Here at The Dark Side head office, all offices had doors with no windows to peek in. The grey slate coloured carpets marked my exit to the elevators and down to the security desk.

Quinn hadn’t told me what would happen in the coming months. I trusted him to keep me on the path to fame and fortune. Now that I’d signed the contract, I had faith in him more than ever to get me to household name status.

Excerpt
I blush and shake my head. “We should get started on the bedroom.”

Kevin follows behind me, fiddling with his phone. I refill the paint tray and set it on the bedroom floor. Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” starts playing. Kevin comes up behind me, puts his hands on my hips and begins to move them to the music. He presses against my back. My hands fall to my sides, and I tilt my head against his chest.

“This is not helping my walls get painted,” I whine.

“Come on, dance with me.” he pleads.

I turn around and stare into his eyes. It would be so easy to get lost in them but I can’t. I won’t. My hips stop moving, but Kevin’s still dancing. I raise the paintbrush that’s in my hand and slap him in the face with it. Slap sounds violent. It was more like I grazed him with cream colored paint while my hand slowly moved in front of his face. Kevin stops dancing. His jaw hangs open.

“Game on babe.”
