Synopsis
There’s no turning back. I can’t go home a failure–again. Everyone wants to use me, make me their pawn, but I have other plans. I will win this election or die trying.

Randi Sawyer
It started with a shady business proposal I should’ve turned down. Now here I am pretending to be someone I’m not, and bonus, I’m at the mercy of a man whose joy comes from my failures. The deeper I sink into DC’s seedy political scene the more I realize I can’t trust anyone if I’m going to make it out alive. Until him. Secret Service agent Trey Benson is bitter, jaded, and oh so hot with his mischievous smirk and cocky attitude. He hates me, just like everyone else, but he might just be who I need to survive this mess I’ve landed myself in.

Trey Benson
Forced onto her protection detail, I’m certain she’s just another Political Barbie in this city. I should know–I’ve dated most of them. Except she’s not. Funny, foulmouthed and crazy as hell, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous, Randi Sawyer just might be the one person who can make a difference in DC–and in me. Too bad the boss says she’s off-limits, that it’s too risky for her career and mine. Good thing I’ve never been great at sticking to orders.

Power Play is the first book in the five-book Power Play series. Each book cannot be read as a standalone. All five books follow one main couple’s relationship as it grows through a five-year time period. It’s suspenseful, steamy, and oh so unputdownable. If you’re a fan of Tiffany Snow, Meghan March, and Skye Warren then this series is for YOU!

Synopsis
Fate threw him a wicked twist. Or maybe it was the magic of Christmas. Maybe it was just going home.

T’was the night before Christmas—three actually—and there was nothing quiet about the club Declan found himself at. The superhero-themed masquerade party was the one thing he’d been looking forward to when he’d been summoned home for Christmas. He usually kept a safe distance between him and his family. It was easier to hide his secret that way. Being gay wasn’t the only thing he was hiding. The truth was far worse—he’d fallen for his stepbrother, Ollie.

The night of the masquerade party saw his world was flipped upside down by an enticing stranger. He’d never be the same again. The two men came together when they both needed it most. What followed was one seriously sexy pre-Christmas set of fireworks exploding between them. But he was soon alone again, sitting in an apartment full of beautiful, rich people who only wanted to know him because of his stepfather’s bank account. Declan’s love of the holidays was wavering, and he was regretting his trip home.

Then Ollie walked in, and everything became a whole lot more complicated. Declan was torn—unable to get the sexy, nameless stranger out of his head and Ollie out of his heart.

Going home for Christmas would either break him or… well, Declan didn’t have that quite figured out.

Home For Christmas is a stand-alone, Christmas gay romance by Ann Grech featuring a steamy one night stand, a closeted hero, wrestling stepbrothers, numerous references to Woody and Buzz, singing in the shower and a feel good second chance romance.

Excerpt #2
I glanced at the text from Dad. Come home for Christmas. A second one lit up my screen. Please. I shook my head and dropped my cell on the bed next to me. I’d deal with it later. The final draft of my honors dissertation lay spread around me in a disorganized mess, and I was frazzled. I was on the cusp of handing it in; this read-through was supposed to be a final one to check for flow before it went to the editor to pick up any spelling and grammar errors. Then, all things going well, I’d be submitting it to my professor after I returned from my sojourn to Turks and Caicos for my Christmas and New Year break. I was so close I could taste it. Except that this draft was a mess. I had to read every sentence, every paragraph, every chapter again to make sure I’d captured all the revisions. I was exhausted, but I needed it done.

I wanted warm sun, sparkling clear blue ocean, hammocks, and cocktails. Music and a good book. Lazy days and nights filled with parties. Not cold wind, rain on a good day or sleet on a cold one, and big wig corporates. I dealt with them every time I returned home to pack in a few weeks of work experience during breaks, so I’d prefer to stay away from them on the one holiday I took a year.

I was just about to pick up my cell and rain on Dad’s parade when he called. The screen lighting up and the buzzing of my muted phone made me jump like a startled jackrabbit, and I scrambled to pick it up. Laughing at my frazzled self, I swiped to answer and greeted my dad.

“Son, how are you?” he asked warmly.

“Good. Tired. Needing a break. Take your pick.” I yawned. It was late, and I’d been at it for hours.

“I thought you were almost finished.”

“I was, but I’ve screwed up something in the document and lost hours of work.” I sighed and scrubbed my hand over my face. I needed another coffee, but if I had more now, I wouldn’t sleep for a week.

“Will you get it done before you fly out?”

I huffed out a laugh. “To where? A beautiful tropical island where I can defrost and relax, or home to weather that’s as cold as New York?”

“We’d love you to come home,” he replied.

“So, this has nothing to do with you trying to make up for last Christmas?” My skepticism was obvious.

Dad hesitated. I had him pegged all right. “Can you blame me?” he asked. I couldn’t. He’d been called into work and had been stuck there most of Christmas Eve and late into the day on Christmas Day. He’d managed to save the few hundred jobs riding on his own, but it had come at the expense of Christmas Day with his wife. At lease Dad was going to make sure it didn’t happen again this year. Even if it did mean that he needed me there rather than where I really wanted to be.

“No, I can’t blame you.” I sighed again. “But I need this break, Dad.”

“Your brother’s coming.” I groaned. If he was going, I couldn’t say no…

About the Author
By day Ann Grech lives in the corporate world and can be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. She graduated with a PhD in 2016 and is now an over-qualified nerd. Glasses, briefcase, high heels and a pencil skirt, she’s got the librarian look nailed too. If only they knew! She swears like a sailor, so that’s got to be a hint. The other one was “the look” from her tattoo artist when she told him that she wanted her kids initials “B” and “J” tattooed on her foot. It took a second to register that it might be a bad idea.

She’s never entirely fit in and loves escaping into a book–whether it’s reading or writing one. But she’s found her tribe now and loves her MM book world family. She dislikes cooking, but loves eating, can’t figure out technology, but is addicted to it, and her guilty pleasure is Byron Bay Cookies. Oh and shoes. And lingerie. And maybe handbags too. Well, if we’re being honest, we’d probably have to add her library too given the state of her credit card every month (what can she say, she’s a bookworm at heart)!
She also publishes her raunchier short stories under her pen name, Olive Hiscock..

“Kirby, when do you move in?” Maureen Melon shrieked as Margo walked into the kitchen. “Did you hear that M&M? Kirby bought a house!”

“Wow,” Margo said flatly, greeting the news with the same enthusiasm as dental work.

“I close next week. And then after that,” Kirby trailed off, lost in a haze of euphoria before exclaiming, “I’m gonna be a homeowner at 24! Can you believe it?”

They both looked at Margo with stars in their eyes.

“I can’t,” Margo echoed dryly…

Margo had moved home as a stopover after a failed stint at Popler, the holy grail of fashion magazines, but that was four years ago now. She’d nabbed the position her senior year and crammed her entire world into two checkable duffel bags and flung herself across the country to a rundown studio in Harlem. In real life it was 246 square feet of worn walls and sloping floors.

Perfection, Margo had thought the moment the door swung open. Her first day, she arrived ready to run the place. But, after eight weeks of only filing, running errands, and fetching coffee, she surmised she wasn’t being used to her fullest.  So, with an abundance of entitlement that she mistook for confidence, Margo marched into her boss’s office. Lennox Stanton sat before her picking apart a vegan burrito like a vulture clad in Balmain as Margo launched in: “People say you have to start at the bottom, but I don’t think that applies to everyone. Some of us are meant to start several rungs up. I’m happy to get your coffee every once and a while, Lennox, but I’d like to be given more challenging duties if I’m expected to remain in my position.”

Five minutes later, Margo was on the corner of 45th and Times Square holding the contents of her desk, three packages of Little Debbie snacks, and a fake cactus. Lennox Stanton had fired her.

Her parents had encouraged her to bootstrap a way to stay in New York. “I’m not just taking any job, Dad,” she’d protested. “I wanna write, not wait tables.” The next day, she bought a ticket home. “It’s fine. I’ll take this time to write,” she informed her parents as she hefted her suitcase off the baggage carousel. Their worried glances said they weren’t so sure.

Kirby, on the other hand, skyrocketed. While waiting in line for coffee in between her classes Kirby had met a coding student, David, from the technical school across the street. Together, the pair formed a resale fashion start-up, Blush & Bashful, selling Kirby’s vintage finds. Surprising even to them, it took off and took them with it. Kirby went from a girl with no professional drive to driving a Mercedes in two short years. As far as Margo was concerned, that ride, metaphorically and literally, was supposed to have been hers.

“Earth to Margo!”

Margo shook free from the memory to find her mom passing Champagne flutes through the window that connected their dining room and kitchen and robotically grabbed them. She lapped the table placing one flute at each seat.

“What do you mean a channel?” she asked as Kirby joined her relay team, falling in rank behind her, placing napkins at each stop.

“I mean a channel, AN ACTUAL CHANNEL. I’ve already started shooting videos for the site, and we’re changing my title to editor in chief and style director. Can you believe…”

Margo halted. Kirby smashed into her back. “What?” Margo asked indignantly. “You’re an editor in chief just because some coding school dropout gives you the title?”

Kirby’s face crumpled.

“MARGO!” her mother reprimanded. Silence stood like soup in the room.

She knew she should stop but didn’t. Couldn’t. “I’m the writer. Not you. What have you ever done? I mean, really, Kirby? Seriously?” she asked, each word punctuated with accusation.

“You made eyes with a guy in a coffee shop who wanted in your pants and somehow you parlay that into a self-professed editor in chief title. You’re such a fake. And….”

“THAT’S ENOUGH!” Hank Melon boomed from the doorway. “Margo Valentine Melon, you will not speak to your sister that way. What has happened to you? You’re the one who quit. Not me.

Not your mother. Certainly not Kirby. You. You gave up. You threw in the towel. And yet here you are trying to hang all of us with it. I don’t think so, young lady.”

His words stung, mostly because they were true. Margo wanted to yell at them, like a child who drops their ice cream and then shouts at everyone standing around for what was their own mistake. She bit her lip to keep it from trembling, placed the remaining flutes on the table, and rushed out.

“Margo?” Kirby started behind her.

“Give her a minute.” Maureen grabbed Kirby’s arm.

Carved into the side of the hill halfway down Beverly Crest sat Coyote Café, a small sliver of an establishment that was easily missed thanks to its hidden façade, so much so that Margo had missed it. She had to go down the hill and turn around, driving back up to locate it. She waited for one of the only spots in the lot that her beat-up Bronco would fit into. When she walked into the café, she stepped in a puddle of water. Damn it! Chelsea’s McQueens!

“What can I get you?” he asked.

Margo felt herself relax, the anger shaking free from what had just happened up the hill. “Ain’t that the truth,” she said, smiling at his positivity.

Margo rattled off her order and paid at the register.

“Take a seat.” He pointed to the booth. “I’ll get that right out to you. Want any pastries?” he asked, as he began to grind coffee beans, gesturing with his head toward the counter brimming with cake stands. “We make ’em homemade daily. I get up at 4 a.m. just to do it.”

Margo looked at the counter and spied the pile of at least ten croissants under an elegant glass cloche. She thought of Mix’s request for the flaky and buttery baked goods. “Nope, all set,” she said as she took a seat.

As Margo sat in the oversized walnut booth, a flood of anger and uncertainty washed over her. Universe, God, Beyoncé, Oprah, give me a sign of what I’m supposed to do. I thought I was on the right path, but I don’t know. I just need a sign of what to do next, of where I belong….

About the Author
I’m a feisty redheaded Canadian/American who fell in love with romance novels when my friend Phil bought me a Kindle that hasn’t left my side since. My favorite books to read are anything taboo and super sick and twisted. I’m not sure I will ever write anything dark, but I would love to give it a shot one day.

I live in South Florida with my high school sweetheart and three kids. I grew up in Burlington, ON, Canada but made the move to South Florida in 2013 and definitely don’t miss the snow.

I’m not sure where this writing journey will take me but either way, I know it will be a fun new adventure, and I’m super excited about it.

Excerpt #2
Cliffs rose in the distance, but for once they weren’t red. Instead, everything was sepia-toned, the brownish-orange hue like nothing she’d seen. The rebel base nested in the rock, whole and safe, with no smoke drifting up. A scent of something rotting or dead filled her nostrils instead.

The alley she stood in was both familiar and different. No one was there but her. The vast emptiness of the land echoed inside her heart. She wrapped her arms around herself. The feeling of being watched raised the hairs on her skin.

In the sky, the suns didn’t blaze down. Two black circles blocked their light, with a thin line glowing along the edge of the obstruction. On the horizon, both to the east and the west, the barest orange hue shimmered as if sunrise and sunset were occurring at the same time. A perpetual twilight ruled the otherness of the world surrounding her.

Shadow bands glided across the ground, making the space beneath them appear not to exist. Whatever they touched was gone in that instant but returned when the shadows moved on. They streaked toward her.

“Aubrey.” Her name drifted on the air as the shadows drew closer. Her feet moved on their own, keeping just out of the shadows’ reach. Her own name slithered to her again. “Aubrey.”

Her heart pounded in her chest, a rapid beat that didn’t drown out the whispers. Aubrey ran, her footsteps silent on the dirt, even her panting breaths making no noise. The slithery whispers chased her, the only sound in the world around her.

“Aubrey Vale.”  The new voice halted her like a command, both resonant and melodic. The whispers evaporated as soon as it spoke. She could feel the presence behind her, compelling her to turn and face it, impossible to resist. Her body began to pivot, her breath caught in her throat.

The shadowy world blinked out of existence.

Counselor Farrell’s face hovered above her, her hands pulling Aubrey out of the salty water. The counselor’s lips moved, but music flooded Aubrey’s ears, blocking out the words. Farrell snatched the headphones off her, and concern flooded her face. “What’s wrong? Why are you so frightened?”

Behind the counselor, another woman hovered, her expression serene as she clasped both sides of Farrell’s head. The woman’s gown flowed around her, a shawl curling into the air as if floating on water.

Aubrey squeezed her eyes shut, panic clogging her throat.

“You have to talk to me, Aubrey,” Farrell’s voice came to her as if down a tunnel. “Otherwise, I’m bundling you off to the medical room.”

Aubrey forced her eyes to open. The floating woman had vanished.

Counselor Farrell cupped her face. “Aubrey?”

The gentleness of her touch caught in Aubrey’s chest. “Bad dream.”

How do things fall apart so easily?

Kate:
As a former teacher, my mission is to keep the disadvantaged youth of our city engaged with school. My non-profit has been wildly successful with the kids, but now I’m forty mentors short for the Christmas season. It didn’t look like we would be able to find enough help, until Jim Adelson got involved. He may have solved my mentor problem, but he’s created another: I can’t concentrate with this panty melting God around.

Jim:
The community has been good to me. I’d built my successful security business with hard work and determination, and when I got approached to help Kate Monroe’s non-profit, it seemed a fitting way to give back. I’d offer to spend time with some kids, but it’s Kate that I find myself wanting to spend time with. With beauty obvious to everyone, and a compassionate heart she wears on her sleeve, she has me reevaluating my priorities.

When the children’s Christmas gifts go missing, Jim and Kate are forced together in the hunt.

Can true love fight through the drama to find a happy ending?

Gifted is the first book in the holiday series Clear Security Holidays. This is a standalone holiday romance suspense novel, but characters from the Venture Capital series and from Tech Billionaires can be known to make appearances.

Excerpt #1
Kate

Forty kids won’t have a Christmas, and it’s all my fault.

Over two hundred kids from middle schools across the city and county of San Francisco—from some of the most at-risk areas—met the requirements for our contest, and I’m forty donor/mentors short for our upcoming celebration. At two hundred dollars apiece, I don’t know what I’m going to do. How do I break a promise I made to these kids on the first day of school? Go to school for seventy-five days, don’t be absent, don’t be late, and get a passing grade. If you accomplish all that, you’ll get a two-hundred-dollar shopping spree at Bullseye.

Some people think “paying kids to go to school” is a bad thing. But we get paid to come to work, and some people play solitaire on their computers while they sit there. How is that not paying you for just showing up? In a lot of low-income areas—in San Francisco and elsewhere—over half of the students that complete middle school never walk into a high school, and less than ten percent of those who do will go on to graduate. Life isn’t easy for these kids, and going to school every day is not easy with so many distractions. But with some incentive, we see improvement.

To make those incentives happen, I’ve got to figure out how I’m going to fund these last few students and find mentors to spend the day with them while they shop. I’ve tapped my network, and it’s pretty dry. But I can’t disappoint these kids; they’ve had enough disappointment in their lives.

I open the app to my bank account: three hundred dollars. I was going to use that money for my rent next month, and, you know, to feed myself. Right now, there’s no man in my life to make sure I get at least an occasional dinner. I check the account for my Visa card, and I can squeeze out maybe two thousand dollars to cover ten kids. But that still leaves me with thirty more, and still no mentors. Crap! What am I going to do?

Tess walks into my office. “Isn’t this great? We’ve never had this many kids, ever! This could mean we have at least a hundred more kids graduate, and fifteen of those will go on to college, plus sixty more to trade schools. This is amazing. Are we going to be ready?”

I force a smile. “I hope so. We’re short a few donor/mentors.”

“In this town, people spend two hundred dollars on dinner without a second thought. We should be able to find a few that will support a good cause.”

“I hope so. I’ve reached out to our board members and asked them to check with their network.”

“How many donors are we short?”

“Forty. I can leverage my credit card for ten of those, but I’m not sure how we’re going to be able to make this work.”

“Kate, if anyone will get this figured out, it’s you. Last year we had barely one hundred kids complete this project. This year we have over two hundred. You need to celebrate that.”

“I will when I lock down the rest of the people we need.”

“Well, then don’t be shy. Bug those board members.”

“I will.”

But that may not be enough. Somehow, I need to get to the big players in town.

“What about your new board member?” Tess asks.

“That’s Stephanie Paulson, and she does seem pretty well-connected. She must know a few people that can help us.”

I’ve asked her about this a few times during our meetings, but I need to try again in writing. I don’t think my board members realize how tough it is to keep a nonprofit up and running in this city.

I craft a carefully worded email to remind Stephanie of our remaining need and looming deadline, trying to sound just the right amount of desperate. We’re only a five-year-old nonprofit, but we’re making a difference. I can feel it in my bones. However, if we can’t make this happen for all the kids who earned it, we may not recover.

I send my message, and after just a few minutes, an email pops up.

To: Katherine Monroe
From: Stephanie Paulson
Subject: RE: Brighter Future Christmas Party

I’m sorry I keep forgetting. Thanks for the email reminder. I’ve forwarded your note to everyone in my contact list with your information. We should be able to come up with more than forty donors. We’re only asking them for $200 and a Saturday morning, for goodness sake! The party on Christmas Eve is a bonus! Let me know if you don’t hear from enough and I’ll rattle the cages, but at the very minimum, I’ll send over a check for $5,000 you can use for the party.

Keep up the good work.

XOXO
Steph

Suddenly, I can take a deep breath again. This guarantees the needed money, and I’m on the road to having the volunteers as well. That’s probably the most important part. These kids need mentors, and spending the day with adults who’ve accomplished something means a lot.

My phone interrupts my thoughts. “Kate Monroe,” I answer.

“Hello, Miss Monroe? This is Jamal Jenkins.”

“Hey, Jamal. How are you?”

“I’m doin’ real good. I just wanted to make sure you saw that my name was on the list again this year.”

“You better believe I saw your name. I’m very proud of you.”

“Jose made it, too. And we have four other friends who made it this year. Once they learned they could get two hundred dollars of stuff for just going to school, they were joining us.”

“I can’t wait to see you guys on Saturday when you pick out your gifts.”

“I’ve got a list,” he says proudly. “Is it okay if I bring my baby sister to the party on Christmas Eve?”

“Of course, and your grandmother, too.”

“Just make sure the Santa you get this year is a little more realistic.”

I laugh. Last year’s Santa was our CPA, and he’s tall and really skinny. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“Great. See you at Bullseye next Saturday.”

“I can’t wait.”

I worked as a teacher for five years, and it’s the hardest job there is. Not only are you responsible for educating the next generation, but many students have so much going on in their personal life that you end up being their mentor, friend, confidant, and sometimes parent as well. That’s exactly why I decided to start Brighter Future.

Excerpt #2
Tia is asleep, huddled in a tight ball, and I wonder why she didn’t throw the blanket that is hanging off the back of the couch over herself. I contemplate what to do. Leave her here for the night? Carry her to her bedroom…or into my room, because that is where she may end up anyway if she has a nightmare? No, I can’t take her to my bedroom. What if she wakes and wonders how the hell she got there?

I am mulling over my decision when I see her eyes spring open. She doesn’t freak out that I’m here, that she suddenly has a couch-mate. She just looks at me, at my eyes, then my mouth. Her breathing starts to quicken, and I wonder if she is on the verge of a panic attack. Maybe she had a nightmare, and it’s only starting to hit her now.

“Tia…are you okay?”

Tia inches over to me, her bare thigh brushing against my jeans. And then without breaking eye contact she swings her leg around until she’s straddling me. The move is so sudden that my hands remain frozen in mid-air, not on the couch or her waist, but just out there. She buries her head in my neck, wraps her arms around me and I pull her against my chest. I’ve held her before, but it’s always been after one of her nightmares or when she was emotionally distraught and sobbing.

But she isn’t crying right now. She doesn’t seem scared. Fear is not what I saw in her eyes right before she crawled into my lap. She looked at me as if she wanted me. I haven’t been with a woman in a while, but I still know what it looks like, what it feels like to be desired. My cock swiftly swells in my pants and I wonder if she can feel it. She is only wearing a thin pair of shorts and pressed firmly against my erection. I need her to talk to me, to get my mind off the fact that only a few layers of clothing separate us.

“I missed you,” she says. Her warm breath on my neck, the touch of her lips feathering my heated flesh, makes me shiver and I struggle not to let my hands drop and claim her waist.

She missed me. I had only been gone a few hours and she…

Her lips aren’t just hovering over my skin now, but trailing light kisses along my neck, causing my heart to race. With any other woman at this point, I would have flipped her to her back, ripped away her shorts and buried myself inside her. But I could never do that with Tia.

“Did you miss me?” she asks between pecks. I feel her tongue accompany the last kiss she strategically places just below my jaw and I groan. It is uncontrollable and the second she hears it I feel her pelvis grind against my cock.

“Tia, do you know what you’re doing?”

“Yes. I know exactly what I’m doing…and what I want,” she says, sitting back and looking me dead in the eye.

I eradicate the space between us and take her mouth hard, smashing my lips against hers and she kisses me back with equal intensity. My hands surrender and I grip her ass. I miraculously find the words, “Is this okay?”

“Yeah,” she moans into my mouth. I squeeze her perfect round ass and rub her against me. I could easily come like this and from the sounds she’s making, those low whimpers and groans, she could get off as well.

“You feel so good,” I say.

“Make me forget, Trent. Make them go away,” she murmurs.

It’s like someone took a bucket of water and threw it at me…at my cock, in particular. I sit back and she stares at me beneath hooded eyes. She looks beautiful and ready to be fucked. But this can’t happen, not now, maybe never. “What’s the matter?” she asks, her arms falling to her sides.

“I want you, Tia. You have no idea how much I want you. But not like this.” She scoots off me and covers herself with the throw blanket from the back of the couch. I rest my hand over hers. “I don’t want to be just a distraction. Maybe some guys would be okay with that, but I’m not one of them, and I never will be.”

Synopsis
Izzy Kavanagh’s life falls apart when her mother dies. She is forced to move to the US and live with her absent father, who thinks money is the answer to every problem, and her twin brother Ethan, who she has barely spoken to in years.

She hates everything about the move. She hates that she’s forced to finish high school even though she’s already completed it in the UK. She hates that her father is controlling her and threatening to take away her inheritance if she doesn’t do as he says, even though he’s barely there and couldn’t care less about her. She hates that everybody already has an opinion on her based on her family name.

But what she hates above all else is having to see her brother every day in his perfect life where everybody worships him, because he chose this life over her and her mum.

And for that, she’ll never forgive him.

Excerpt #2
We sit in silence for the next twenty minutes, both of us lost in our own thoughts, watching what’s happening in the distance. Ms. Joot’s words about confiding in someone keep playing on a loop in my head and despite mine and Finn’s issues and arguments I know that I can trust him.

Eventually I turn to him. “I wish Ethan had been there, in the last few months of her life…at the end.”

“He wishes that too, Izzy. You know he does.”

I shake my head. “No, you don’t get it.”

He doesn’t get at all just how badly I let my mum down. How I missed all the signs.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see him turn his head to face me, but I don’t look at him. I can’t look at him right now.

“She was sick for months before she went to the doctor,” I admit, my heartbeat hammering in my chest and the shame running through me. “She was run-down and tired, and she’d started to lose weight. I knew she wasn’t well. I knew she needed to go to the doctor, but she didn’t go, and I didn’t make her. I let her put it off and was happy for her to pick me up from school or take me shopping or cook my dinner rather than marching her down to the doctor’s office.”

A tear slides down my face.

“Ethan wouldn’t have missed it like I did. He wouldn’t have been as selfish as me. He would have put her first, would have known it wasn’t just some stupid flu thing.”

Another tear slides down my face. And another. I’ve never told anyone this before, never admitted it out loud.

“By the time she did make it there, it was too late. It was too far gone and they couldn’t do anything about it.”

I swipe at my face, wiping the tears away, and I take a deep breath and release what I’ve been holding inside me since my mum died. I don’t know why, but I want to tell Finn.

“I know I blamed Ethan for not being there when she died, but it’s my fault she was in that position in the first place, my fault it took so long for her to go to the doctor and have it diagnosed.”

My voice cracks and I start sobbing then, sobbing when I remember how devastated I was the day I found out she had cancer. How she promised me she was fine and she was going to fight it. How I believed it because my mum was the strongest person I knew and if anyone could beat cancer, she could.

Finn wraps his arms around me and hauls my body against him, hugging me so tightly I feel like I’m being welded into him. “It’s okay, Izzy. It’s okay.”

I cry against his shoulder for what feels like hours, remembering how shocked I was at her diagnosis, how devastated, how I handled it by disappearing on her and trying to forget about it, drinking and partying when I should have been there, by her side at all times of the day and night, reassuring her that she was loved.

Eventually I pull back, and our faces are so close I can see the flecks of gold in his green eyes.

“It’s not your fault, Izzy.”

Another tear slides down my cheek. “I could have done so much more.”

“Izzy, listen to me,” he says firmly. “There’s nothing you could have done.”

“I could have been there after. I could have talked to her and stayed in and stopped drinking and doing drugs trying to forget about it.” Another sob escapes as I remember how devastating that time was and how I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t know how to handle it so I just tried to forget, tried to bury the truth of what was happening until I couldn’t anymore, until she got so visibly sick that I didn’t dare leave the house in case something happened whilst I was gone. I remember how I helped her shower and begged her to eat when her appetite was gone, and when I remember that, I start to cry all over again.

“It’s not your fault,” Finn whispers over and over. “It’s not your fault.”

“What am I supposed to do without her?” I manage to choke out. “I’m a mess without her, and I don’t know how to fix any of this stuff with Ethan.” I take a deep shuddering breath. “I can’t do any of this without her.”

He doesn’t say anything in return. He doesn’t bullshit me and tell me it’ll be fine, doesn’t say I’ve not messed everything up and I’m not going to miss her every day of my life. Instead his face has so much sympathy and concern on it and it’s so, so personal that I can’t stand it any longer. I launch myself towards him, fusing my mouth to his and forcing my tongue between his lips.

He kisses me back. I swear he kisses me back, tightening his arm around my neck and pulling me closer, pressing my body against his, but he only does that for about five seconds before he’s pushing me away and detangling himself from me.

“No,” he tells me breathlessly. “No, not like this. Not like this.”

Humiliation washes over me as I realise I’m being rejected, realise I was completely wrong and there hasn’t always been this strange vibe between us. I immediately stand to leave but he grabs my hand, gripping it tightly, not letting me go. I try my best to pull my hand out of his grip, desperate to get away from him, but he holds on tightly, tugging me back sharply. Still, I manage to twist away and I take off running down the path, not stopping when he calls after me and taking off down a different path because I can’t stand the thought of passing Ethan and his friends or seeing any of Finn’s family. No, I take off down a completely different path and then half-run, half-walk the whole way home.

Excerpt
I’m sure she’ll say yes. I think.

But there’s this breathless moment when I think I might be about to get my heart crushed. She just stares at me with her eyes so wide, unblinking.

Goddamn, I know she loves me. Know she wants to run away with me.

But what if I’ve pushed too hard, too fast? It’s honestly asking a lot after the life she’s been trapped in. This much change just might be terrifying and—

“Yes!” she cries, tumbling down into my arms, barely catching the ring box to clasp it between our twined hands.

Then comes the kiss to end all kisses. It tastes wet and salty, her tears flowing freely.

Maybe not just hers, even if I’ll never admit it out loud.

Even if she’d said no, I’d still have done everything in my power to protect her.

To save her from that wretched man.

Still, the fact that she wants to leave that life behind not just as my lover, but as my wife means the damn universe.

It’s everything. It makes everything I’ve endured to get here worth it.

The pain. The torture. The conditioning. The brainwashing that even now scares me, when I’ve done everything I can to fake compliance while fighting the command triggers burned into my grey matter.

She’s the one reason I’ve been able to hold on.

And she doesn’t even know how long she’s been keeping me together.

One fine day, I’ll tell her.

I’ll tell her how young Tiger fought against his bonds each and every time Dr. Ross held him down and injected him with burning shit to make him more obedient and whispered the same words to him over and over and over, engraving them deep in his brain.

I’ll tell her how that boy held on to her and wouldn’t let him take the memory of a pretty girl twirling a flower between her fingers under the summer sun, and the shy, sweet way she looked at him.

I’ll tell her about an older kid wondering who she grew into, now and then dreaming her voice. The same voice I remembered hearing deep down in the catacombs under the mansion.

I’ll tell her about carving her face into thin slips of wood, carving flowers I swore I’d give her one day, holding on to them when I felt like I’d break at the slightest provocation.

I’ll tell her how sometimes the neat lines between love and obsession get so blurred, I can’t even breathe anymore without picturing her.

That’s why I want to save her so much.

Because Clarissa saved me.

Right now isn’t the time for those words, though. Now’s the time for tearful kisses, for the tight roughness in my throat, for her arms around my neck and her body against mine, and then we’re hand in hand, and I’m sliding that pretty, slender engagement ring on her delicate finger.

I can’t stop smiling, and my smile echoes on her lips, in her eyes.

We don’t need to say a word as we stand, picking at the flowers from the edge of the cliff, hand in hand.

Yeah, it’s that corny old legend, the lovers of Heart’s Edge.

That old promise.

The one where they say if you toss flowers over the cliff with the person you love, maybe you’ll be together forever.

So we pluck the petals with starry-eyed looks and hold them up high. And when we cast them over the edge and into the wind, sending them swirling into the night, I think I can see our forever.

Little do we know that our promise ends in less than a week…

Excerpt #3
“You don’t really think I look like him, do you?” He holds up the card, facing me as if I’m meant to compare the two of them side by side.

“You don’t not look like him.”

Drew chuckles, rubbing his jaw and smiling like he’s got me all figured out. I just bet he does. “You’re blushing, freckles.”

“It’s from the wine. And the bath,” I tack on. “Hey, do you want to watch that documentary I mentioned to you the other day?”

“Come sit with me and tell me all about how this lie came to be.” He pats my couch with his open palm to a heavy beat, and my heart thunders along with it. “It’s because you think I’m hot, right? You think I’m hot and you didn’t want anyone to know about your deep-seated, overwhelming attraction for me.” He’s mocking me now and enjoying the hell out of making me squirm.

I snort, then scoff, rolling my eyes as I pour him more wine. “Overinflated ego, party of one.”

I set the now empty bottle on the table and Drew grabs my hand, tugging me down, half onto him and half onto the couch, so I’m at a somewhat odd angle. He grabs my chin and lifts my face up to his before his hand drops, wrapping around my lower back. My breath hitches.

“You’re not going to tell me, are you?” he asks, searching my eyes, and from this distance, I’m assaulted with visions of our kiss only a few short weeks ago. Maybe a couple of dirty add-ons thrown in. “You don’t have to. I just pretty much guessed why you did it. Didn’t I?”

“You do have similar hair to him.”

His crooked grin turns into a full smile, complete with white teeth and sparkling gray eyes that see right through me.

“I think you’re hot too, freckles.” That would have been a great line except for the use of my nickname. Freckles and hot don’t quite fit together. It makes it sound like he’s teasing me again, and I can’t help my frown followed by the twinge of embarrassment and self-loathing. Yes, haha, you just figured out poor pathetic Margot. Aren’t you clever?

At least he didn’t push it beyond the hot thing. He didn’t ask, hey, do you have a secret crush on me you’ve harbored for years? Because if he did, then I’d blush for sure.

We stare into each other from mere inches away and I wonder if either of us is going to address what’s been happening between us over the last few weeks. How we’ve been way more touchy-feely than we ever were before. How we’re spending more time together, if you can wrap your head around that truth, than ever before. He watches me and I watch him and we play it off like we’re not actually doing that.

Because we’re Drew and Margot.

I’m too young and he’s too serious. He loves another woman and I’m incapable of being with a man without it crashing down in a pit of flames. We work together and are the perfect best friends.

Because in reality, we could never work together. If you know what I mean.

That’s how our dance goes.

But that doesn’t mean I haven’t noticed the change. Haven’t felt it, even though I’m treating it and him like a deadly virus. Because if he breaks down my resistance and infiltrates my immune system, he’ll kill me dead.

There is no surviving Drew. Not for me. Not for the girl he affectionately calls freckles and best friend.

His eyes dip to my lips, his sweet breath fanning across them like a dare. “You are,” he whispers, the mood shifting drastically from playful and teasing to tension-filled and smoldering. I can practically taste it. Feel the hum of it vibrate between us. “Hot. Beautiful. Sexy.”

That last one sends a jolt of lust-filled adrenaline surging through my blood straight to my core. I need to bring this back into safer territory. Ask him if I look like his brothers or something lame, but I can’t make the words come out. Probably because my gaze is bouncing back and forth between his lips and eyes like a racquetball, unable to decide where it would rather stay.

“Do you ever think about it?” he asks, his voice so light it floats over me. “Our kiss.”

“Yes,” I answer honestly.

He’s fearless with me. How can he be so fearless when all I feel is afraid?

“Me too,” he hums, inching in even closer. “Margot?” he questions, his voice tight, strained.

That question, my name on his lips, is everything. The line in the sand. The divide between sense and chaos. It’s the edge of reason.

Synopsis
A sexy runningback who needs a nanny for his little boy.  A waitress trying to run from her past. Could she be the one to trust with his most precious possession? Could he be the man who makes her believe in love again? Only if they can take down walls with the same ease that they take off clothes. But when this single dad finds out the truth, their sexy slow ride might come to a crashing halt.

ELLIOT
My priorities are pretty clear. Take care of my five-year-old son and run that damn ball. But I can’t find a nice, qualified nanny to look after him during the season. So when I help out a dazzling blond with her flat tire and she connects with my kid, hiring her to watch Asher seems like a brilliant move.

It’s purely coincidental that Jessica Randall happens to be smoking hot, tons of fun, and every time she puts Asher to bed, I want her to get in mine. But that’s off the table, because Asher adores her, and she’s the first person to bring my boy out of his shell.

Sleeping with Jessica would be a huge mistake, and falling in love is an even bigger risk. But that just might be a risk worth taking.

JESSICA
Elliot Danes is an NFL star dripping with all the wealth and flash I ran away from when I was a teenager. Since then, I’ve lived a simple life, as far away from that world as possible. But a simple life means money problems, and a job as a rich guy’s nanny would solve all of mine.

His kid’s a doll, the job’s a breeze, and the income is going to help the only person I love. But the sweet and sexy single dad is one big temptation that I can’t resist. So when steamy sex turns into something serious, I’ve got real problems…

I’m falling in love with Elliot, and I’m crazy about his son, but the truth about my past could break both their hearts.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
“Hello, Izzy.”

I look up from my locker and see Benson Montgomery there.

“Hi?” I reply, looking at the guy who randomly asked me out on a date when I’d just moved here. I don’t really have an opinion on Benson either way. He just sort of swans around the school with his preppy crew, looking down on anyone who doesn’t drive a car that costs over twenty thousand dollars and looking around to see who notices him. On principal, I should despise him, but I don’t care enough to do that. If you ask me, he cares too much about how other people perceive him and this image he’s trying to portray in order for me to dislike him too much. Anyone who cares so deeply about what others think about them is seriously lacking in self-confidence.

“I was wondering if you’re planning on attending the Rosemary Gala this weekend?”

Rosemary Gala? Why does this ring a bell?

He must read my blank expression. “Your grandmother organised it? It’s to raise money for the children’s hospital.”

That’s right. “No.”

He looks surprised. “No you’re not going?”

“No, I’m not going.”

“But my mother assured me you were. She spoke to your grandmother last week.”

That would explain all the emails and messages I’ve been getting from her. I haven’t even bothered to read them. “Well my grandmother is delusional if she thinks I’m going to voluntarily spend time with her.”

His jaw falls open. Clearly he wasn’t expecting that. “Well that’s a shame…I was going to offer to escort you as your date…” He lets the sentence linger as though his offer might change my mind.

“Still not going.”

He looks insulted. “You know, Izzy, I’m actually willing to overlook your recent transgressions and take you on a date.”

What the hell? “My recent transgressions?”

“Yes,” he says irritably. “That business with Craig McGarretty—I don’t know how someone like you would even consider going there. And honestly? It sounds like you’re rather lacking in friendships of any kind at the moment, so I would seriously reconsider my offer if I were you.”

What an absolute dick.

“You know what, Benson?” He straightens up and steps slightly closer to me. I think the stupid idiot actually thinks I’m going to agree with him. “Even if every single person on the face of this earth stopped talking to me, I still wouldn’t be caught dead on a date with you. Now leave. Me. Alone.”

He blinks in total astonishment, but I don’t wait to see if he has anything else to say to me because I see Paul in the distance. I slam my locker and hurry to catch up with him.

“Hey,” he says as I fall into step at his side.

“Do you know Benson Montgomery?” I ask.

“Yeah,” he hesitates. “I mean I know who he is. I’ve never spoken to him.”

“Well he’s a weirdo,” I tell him. “Stay away.”

He grins back at me, and we exit through the main hallway and walk down the stairs before heading to the junior parking lot.

“How was your day?” Paul asks.

“Eventful,” I tell him, and he smiles broadly back at me. Something tells me he already knows what went down between me and Evie, and I’m guessing he’ll be pretty pleased about it. He’s incredibly loyal, and Rachel is one of his friends. He won’t like what Evie did.

I open the passenger door to Paul’s car and swing my bag in.

“Um, Izzy?”

I look over at Paul, and he’s looking at something in the distance. I turn my head to see what it is and immediately want to scream.

What the hell? Apparently today is about to get even more eventful.

“What are they doing here?”

Craig McGarretty is parked up across the street from the student parking lots, not on school property (he’s made sure of that) but wearing his letterman jacket, as are all the buddies he brought along with him.

My head turns back towards the school just as Ethan, Finn, and several of their teammates stroll out of the main entrance. They’re laughing at something and standing around chatting. They haven’t noticed them yet.

“Wait here,” I tell Paul, already striding towards Craig.

Excerpt
“You know I really did consider tonight a date, right?” I say, as we stand outside waiting for the valet to come and deliver my car for us.

We skipped dessert and if she were her usual Margot self, she’d have called me out on that. Dragged me down the street to all the famous pastry shops here on Hanover Street and demanded a cannoli or some gelato that we would have shared. She didn’t, and I have to wonder if it’s because she’s desperate to be rid of me. She finally twists to face me, maybe surprised by the sound of my voice after so much silence. Her eyes peek up at me from beneath her lashes. Then she frowns. Too goddamn bad.

“That night I came to your house and nearly kissed you on your couch, without the provocation of pissing off your ex, was the night everything sort of fell into place for me.”

“I’d appreciate it if you’d shut the fuck up now.”

I grab her by her upper arm, practically lifting her up and off the ground as I drag her over to an alleyway alongside the restaurant. Her lips part, a startled gasp strangles in the back of her throat as I press her body against the rough bricks and slam my mouth down on hers.

Why? I have no clue. I don’t even know how I got here. There was no thought behind it. No, I have to kiss Margot, or I want to really mess up everything I was just trying to not so cautiously build. It just happened and now I’m here. With my lips on Margot’s. I can taste the earthy sweetness of the wine and the fiery bite of her spicy dinner. Feel the heat of her enraged body against mine as she hate kisses me back.

It’s absolutely perfect.

She licks my lips, and I don’t waste time over-thinking, or even thinking at all. I dive in as her mouth opens wider, inviting me in to ruin her for good. My tongue sweeps against hers, gliding and pressing and commanding.

Last time, I only got a tease. A gentle brush of her sweet mouth. Not this time. This time I plunder the depths of her, my tongue dancing with hers. Taking. Coaxing. Fighting. Our mouths move together with such passion you’d think we’ve been doing this together forever. Our lips move, sliding together, perfect counterparts in a play we’ve already mastered. She bites my bottom lip angrily, and I bite hers back, sucking it into my mouth to ease the sting before I follow that move up with her tongue. Her fingers rake through my hair hungrily, angrily, tugging painfully on the ends, and I growl into her, getting the most perfect whimper in return.

We’re ripping and tearing and pulling and biting.

I’ve never hate kissed a woman. It’s hotter than I expected it would be. Or maybe it’s just her. Maybe it’s her bitterness and desire and brutal rage driving me forward. Matching my own.

My hand sweeps down her back, stopping on the crest just above her ass and I tug her in deeper, harder, into my cock that’s straining against my worn locker room jeans. The move says, ‘Feel that? It’s all for you.’  This shirt she had under her scrub top today is thin and small and gave me the most sinful cast of her full tits every time I looked. And now? Now her pebbled nipples scrape my chest, needy, hungry, begging for my mouth to bite and tug on them until she cries out for me. I growl again, wanting to rip off her shirt and take each one in my mouth in turn.

This would be the moment to pull back. To stop this.

But I don’t.

I can’t

I want, no I need, so much more. Whatever I was just thinking about lines and friends and space is gone. I can’t find it anywhere and I’m searching for it. I swear to God, I am. I know this is insane. I know it’s stupid and reckless. I know I’m playing with the most dangerous and explosive fire on the planet. I. Know. This. But I also know a kiss has never made me feel this alive in my entire life.

Margot’s arms cling to my shoulders as she raises up to her tiptoes for a better angle. It’s not enough. She’s short and I’m tall, so I lift her up, her feet dangling above the pavement and mercifully, she doesn’t wrap her legs around me. Because if she did, I’d likely fuck her right here and now in this alley for all passersby to witness.

A car horn blares and something about the sound snaps me back to reality with a cold hard slap. Only, that really happened. I set Margot down, my eyes opening wide as I step back.

“Shit,” she cries out, her eyes flaring and stunned before they narrow in on me. “What the hell was that?” The heat and sting of her smacking my face crawls up my skin.

“You slapped me?” I’m incredulous. Or really, I’m just feigning incredulous because I don’t have an answer for her.

“I slapped you.”

“You could have just pushed me away or asked me to stop. You kissed me back.”

She ignores that. “What’s with all the kissing?”

I shake my head. “I don’t know. I told you. I want more. I want you.”

Synopsis
A royal wedding. A fiery heroine. And a brazen act of sabotage that could topple a kingdom.

It has been five months since Clarabelle Weaver saved the life of the infamous Great Lord and happily accepted his unexpected marriage proposal. With their wedding less than a week away, she is finally stepping into the unfamiliar world beyond her village to face nobility she never knew existed.

But it’s not only them who are interested in her presence.

The enemy is also stirring for this historic occasion. Their focus not on the man they see as their reviled “Dark Lord”, but on her as the young woman who supposedly carries his heir.

Clara must weave a path through attempted assassinations and poisonings whilst also proving to the court that she’s suitable to become their ruler’s Great Lady… all before taking their vows. But has her training prepared her for an attack that could send the kingdom into war?

DARK ONE'S BRIDE Teaser

 —————————————————————————

Excerpt #2
Clara hit the cobblestones and rolled until her back slammed up against something as equally unforgiving. Her breath rushed out her lips, leaving her chest burning. Through the ringing in her ears, she caught the muddied chatter of a gossiping crowd.

“My lady!”

Lucias? No, he wasn’t nearby and he’d only ever spoken her name with such concern.

She rolled her eyes, searching for the source of the sound. All she could see was the shimmering grey of the clouds and buildings. Moving anything else seemed impossible. Everything ached. Her mouth silently opened and closed, the fire in her chest desperate for air. Tears blurred her vision, their passage down her cheeks turning icy in the chill breeze.

Finally, in one massive gasp, she could breathe again. Clara raised an arm, stiff from the tumble, to dash her tears across her sleeve. More took their place. She sniffed in an effort to halt their flow to no avail. Sitting up proved a far harder task, her back stiff. Something wet hit her neck. She patted her hair, cringing as her fingers came into contact with something slimy.

People suddenly filled her vision. Concerned faces floating above the uniform of the Endlight guard. One helped her to her feet. “Are you badly injured, my lady?” he asked her before shouting over his shoulder. “Someone get a doctor!”

“No,” she croaked. The stiffness in her right hip suggested it had taken the majority of the impact, but she could deal with that later. She clutched at the man who still supported her. “The Great Lord!” she blurted, pointing the way Sable had come. There was no sign of the battle, hidden by the press of the crowd and the land. “Over the hill. Bandits. You’ve got to help him!”

“Easy, my lady,” the man said. “You hit the ground pretty hard. We can’t all just… leave our post at your word. Why don’t you rest and tell us what happened?”

Clara stared at the guard, her mouth dropping open. The bandits could have Lucias knocked to the ground by now, barely warding off blows and they wanted her to chat like she was describing some back-city thief? “A fine lot you are.” She shoved the man, although it was herself who took a few staggering paces back.

“My lady,” the man protested. “We can’t help if you don’t—”

“If you won’t help, then I’ll do it myself. Where’s my pony!” She searched the immediate area for the animal, finding him in the possession of another guard. Snatching up the reins, she attempted to mount him. Her skirts tugged at her legs, hindering any chance of lifting them high enough without exposing herself to all and sundry.

Clara dropped back to the cobblestones. There was only one thing for it. She whirled on the nearest guard. “You!” Her ankle twinged with each step and had her silently lamenting how the Citadel, with the training ground’s healing magic, was so far away. “Your dagger,” she demanded.

The guard objected in a stream of incoherent babbles.

Snarling, Clara plucked the dagger from his belt. She sawed through the hem of her dress. After that, tearing a long enough slit through the skirts was a swift matter. Unhindered, she clambered aboard the pony and aimed it the way she’d come. Her body protested. She wiggled, searching in vain for the same comfortable position she’d used for half the day. It only seemed to increase the ache in her legs.

Higher up, she spied the man Lucias had spoken to during their departure. “You there!” The crowd parted around the man as she singled him out with a wave of her hand. “Lieutenant…” Did Lucias ever mention the man’s name? “You! You saw me leave through this gate with the Great Lord, correct?”

The lieutenant nodded as he halted at Sable’s shoulder. “Yes, my lady.” He looked around them, puzzled at first, then panic took over his face as he seemed to realise Lucias was not with her. He twisted to eye the road leading to the Pillars with sick dismay. “Is he still—?”

“Out there.” She levelled her pilfered dagger at the road. “An ambush.” How many men had swarmed out of those carriages? Eight? Ten? Even with the destrier’s might at his control, she’d no idea how Lucias could fight off so many.

The man’s ruddy, olive face grew pale. “To arms, men!” the lieutenant bellowed. He scrambled towards a horse tied up at the guard post and leapt into the saddle.

Excerpt #1
I was done waiting. “Excuse your minions. We need to talk.”

“What about?” she questioned coyly.

I wasn’t in the mood to play games. “You know what this is about.”

She turned to her followers and shooed them away. One by one, they got up and left the area. I saw her say something to the final person, but the music was so loud I couldn’t hear what they discussed. There was no point in asking, either. She wouldn’t tell me the truth.

“Why are you abdicating your throne?” I asked boldly.

Prisma stood, eyes widened as if she wasn’t expecting the inquiry. “Why are you questioning my decision? Most children would be thrilled to be in your position.”

“For the last sixteen years, I’ve barely seen you. Then, out of nowhere, you send Marcus to tell me that you plan to pass your crown to me. Wouldn’t that sound suspicious to you?”

She put her hand on her chest as if she was shocked. Always the drama queen. “Are you saying you don’t want to be king?”

“I’m asking,” I leaned toward her, resting my fists on the table. “What’s in it for you?”

“There’s nothing in it for me, my darling boy.” She waved her arm around. “As you can see, I have everything I need.”

I crossed my arms. “What do you want in return? I know there’s something.”

She sat down and ruffled the skirts of her gown. “I have been made aware of some concerns amongst the council.”

“Really?” I raised an eyebrow. “Do tell.”

With a look of concern on her face, she said, “You’ve spent your entire life away from our court, Rowan. Our kin hardly knows you.”

She had forgotten all about my forced exile. Here comes the truth. “I’m sure you’ve come up with a way for me to prove my loyalty to the council.”

With a dangerously sweet grin, she replied, “I want you to kill the halfling daughter of King

Taron.”

Mass Hysteria is a trilogy of young adult romantic/science-fiction serial novels that tell a continuous story. The books must be read in order, to fully understand the unfolding story.

High school can be hard, especially when your favorite horror movie becomes your reality…

High-School senior, Elizabeth calculates the likelihood of finding love to the probability of starring in a slasher film with her best friend, until she meets Brian Thompson. Love isn’t the only thing that eludes Elizabeth, however. Several threatening notes that promise her demise make a long life also questionable.

When Elizabeth’s best friend shares an article about the death of a girl in Italy, she dismisses it. As more girls are murdered, and cryptic messages are tucked in her locker, she realizes something sinister might be at play. Why? Each of the slain girls look like her.

Excerpt
The single slip of manila paper says only two words: “your next.”

Right away, a few things are apparent: this person’s command of the English language is severely lacking; the scrawl is most likely that of a teenage boy or a toddler of any gender; and thirdly, this note is different from the others. I glance around the brick pillar at the front of our house. The street is silent; not one person is outside from where I stand.

I ball the paper up and toss it in my purse.

I slide into the car beside Stacey and we head to the restaurant—in absolute silence. Silence has many forms. The form we exhibit is awkward—at least for best friends.

We both know why we’re going today. Stacey doesn’t agree with my sentiment for the day, though. I’ve read that if you toss a being outside their natural habitat, one of two things will happen—they will rise to the occasion, or die.

I’m a fighter. I should be able to master the social landscape of female teenagerdom, but it seems I can’t. I flounder—a lot. I cannot explain my high intellect and my innate ability to elicit cringes or gasps of shock when I speak.

Today, that changes.

Once we’re at the restaurant, Stacey says only four words: “This is ridiculous, hon.”

I disagree and we head inside to meet the other girls.

We arrive mid-joke. So, I time my laugh to spill from my lips at the perfect moment.

Except, the sensation rises from my abdomen like gravel tumbling through my mouth. Stacey turns, her lips pursed tight. The other girls stop giggling. Their purrs of laughter are in deep contrast to my piercing cackle.

They frown in unison—everyone but Stacey. She has an ‘I’m sorry I got you into this mess, hon’ look on her face. Though lacking in most social skills, I’m able to read their expressions: ‘What the hell was Stacey thinking, bringing the schizoid?’

I’m painfully aware something is off with me. On a scale of weirdness, I’m not Pinhead. I’m more Carrie, without the powers. I’d change this perception of oddness I convey, but I don’t know where to begin to work on myself. That’s why I’m here today.

Glancing around the table, I attempt a quick recovery. Dogs. Girls like dogs. “I have a dog. He’s the cutest little Pomeranian.”

My words are met with oohs and awws, but Stacey shakes her head once, slightly. I don’t know why she does it. I’ve hit a chord with these girls. I block her shaking head and the bombardment of senseless information streaming through my mind, and continue talking. “He’s a handsome little fur ball.”

“I love dogs,” one of Stacey’s friends says. “My Jax is too freaking cute.”

“My FeFe is too adorbs. What’s your dog’s name, Elizabeth?” Melissa, the closest girl to me asks.

“Norman Bates. He’s a—”

“You named your dog Norman Bates?” Melissa asks.

“Yes. He—”

“Like, isn’t that the crazy dude from that movie? The one who cross-dressed like his mom and like killed everyone?” someone else asks.

“Yes, it’s—”

“It’s kinda weird… well, a lot weird that you named your dog after a homicidal maniac,” Melissa says. No one speaks after her comment. They all stare in opposite directions.

I almost laugh at their reaction, but stop myself. A rush of thoughts hurry through my head: Melissa’s eyes are the color of her heart—black. She’s a modern Cruella DeVille. She’ll trample over her own mother to get what she wants, which is always materialistic and selfish. She’s also beautiful, and she hates me but loves my best friend Stacey.

I shake my head discreetly. They act like I told them I’m naming my firstborn Freddie Krueger. Which I would do, if I could have kids.

I strum my fingers over my jean shorts and count in my head. Counting reminds me not to speak and further add to the awkwardness of the moment.

“Norman Bates is the best dog name, ever,” Stacey says. She gives me a wink. “More importantly, has anyone seen that new movie? You know… the new romance?” Stacey snaps her fingers like she can’t remember. “Oh, I forget the name. But I heard it’s hot—full of steamy love scenes…” Everyone starts talking, each girl stumbling over the other to get a word in. Like if they don’t articulate what they have to say straightaway, their lives might be in peril.

I don’t understand girls, even though I’ve been part of the gender my entire life.

Excerpt #1
Gloria said, hands on her hips. “You promised my husband to watch out for me and Em, but he would want me to watch over you, too. You need someone to look after you, Mia. To care for you. Even if you don’t think you need anyone.”

“I have Paolo.” Mia had asked him once if he’d known what she’d done in America. He understood English, so she spoke both Sicilian and English to him. Paolo had responded with a single, firm nod. And that had been the only time they had discussed it—as much of a discussion as could be had with a mute man.

When she’d announced to her family two weeks ago that she was returning to New York, there seemed an unspoken understanding Paolo would also make that trip. Nevertheless, Don Catalano, who had made the arrangements for her, had told her in no uncertain terms the fierce Sicilian man would be accompanying her as her bodyguard and remaining by her side in New York.

She had come to appreciate his silent presence, his protective hovering. It was hard to understand why he had chosen her to devote himself to, but it wasn’t a gift she was interested in questioning.

“I don’t trust Paolo,” Gloria said. “How do you trust a man who can’t talk?”

“I find him the most trustworthy of men for that reason alone.”

“You can’t travel and live on your own with a man you’re not married to,” she insisted. “You’re still just a young girl, after all.”

“I’ll be twenty-three in September.”

“You are a child,” Gloria repeated softly.

Mia smiled, a little bitterly, down at her small case of cosmetics, dropping the envelope on top. When she was a child, she’d lost both of her parents—her father to a heart attack when she was just a toddler. Her mother had died in a terrible fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, leaping from the top of the building in order to avoid being burned by the flames. Mia and Nick had been forced to hustle the streets, begging for handouts, learning poker to swindle the gangsters, stealing food, freezing nearly to death in their filthy tenement. She’d become a vaudeville performer, because young girls telling raunchy jokes to older men made money. When Nick had been drafted to the war, she’d worked a dozen hours a day for an abusive woman in a dress factory, just to keep a little food in her stomach. She’d known more about being an adult at twelve than most women her age knew now. Once she might have been proud of that, but now, it only made her sad.

Finally, she looked at Gloria. “I haven’t been a child for a very long time.”

About the Author
Meredith Allison has embraced her nerdiness from youth, with minor jaunts of attempting to be “cool” during high school and college. Spoiler alert: she was unsuccessful at fooling anyone. After this dark period, she returned to the light, embracing her bookish nature and penchant for action and horror films, bloody survivalist video games (she’s looking at you, Resident Evil and Call of Duty) interspersed with the occasional sweeping fantasy adventure RPG (Final Fantasy, anyone?). Along the way, she developed her knack for storytelling, which began when she was a mere child-person many moons ago.

Meredith is a writer (and reader) of many kinds of fiction, but in particular spy thrillers, military-esque suspense, and historical crime. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, she is by proxy a Huskers fan (GO BIG RED!), as UNL is her undergraduate alma mater, and moonlights as an obligatory Blue Jays fan due to completing her graduate MFA studies at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

When she emerges from her writing cave, blinking in dismay at having to be exposed to the cruel light of day yet again, she can be found romping with her two Pomeranians, serving her overlord cat, hanging with her husband, battling it out with the undead or practicing a new kind of magery on her PlayStation, or simply huddled in a dark corner somewhere with just enough light to read a favorite book. Other interests include baking, cooking, and blogging about new restaurants.

Synopsis
Has she finally met her match?

During a time of political unrest, convicted assassin Kaelia gets a chance to win back her freedom on a reality TV show competition. Released temporarily from prison, the twenty-two-year-old is given fancy digs in a hotel and her very own personal trainer, Callan.

But Kaelia is harboring a secret: she isn’t like other people. Spliced with the DNA of some of the most predatory animals on the planet, Kaelia was grown in a lab as an embryo and possesses heightened strengths and abilities. She’s confident she will win the competition, and can do so without the likes of Callan Merone ‘training’ her.

But Callan, an ex-soldier for the totalitarian political party that imprisoned her, happens to have the very same secret. Eventually fed up with Kaelia’s arrogance and devil-may-care attitude, he turns her over his knee. For the first time in her life, Kaelia realizes there is someone in the world who can overpower her – and the idea is more arousing than she ever thought it could be.

Publisher’s Note: This steamy dystopian romance contains elements of power exchange.

Excerpt
“Stop, stop!” she cried at last, and her hands flew back to cover her hot bottom, the backs of them crisscrossed over one another across the center, forcing him to pause her spanking. “When will it stop?”

Suddenly he recalled what she had asked him earlier regarding the duration of her spanking, feeling immensely satisfied. Instead of the bratty tone she had taken before, this time, her words echoed with pleading forlorn desperation. Callan had a very strong hunch she’d never felt so overpowered and humiliated before in her life. He wondered if she’d had enough, after all, a wavering heat rose off her bottom and it was obviously tender to the touch. But no. This was the part when her lesson would really begin.

Gathering her wrists in one of his hands, so incomprehensibly large in comparison to her own delicate fingers and slender palms, he tucked them both away between his belly and her side, holding them there. Then he repositioned her, as she had flopped around quite a bit during her struggle to escape her spanking. Clutching her around her tiny waist, he propped her up on one leg while he clamped the other one down over her thighs, feeling her whole body tense in response. Then he lifted her bottom up higher, so that the rest of her hung at an even more severe angle, and bent low over her back to speak.

“It will stop when you learn how to be a good girl,” he said, his voice low and nearly taunting. His fingers grazed over her bottom, so very flushed and warm with heat, and then found them hovering over the hem of her panties again. Oh, modesty be damned, after the way she had acted, she very much deserved this spanking on the bare. With one swift tug, he whisked those panties down over her plump cheeks, leaving them to bunch into the crevice around her thighs.

Her whole body bristled as Callan took in the wonderful sight of her wholly naked ass, admiring the color he’d put on there with new appreciation. Her bare cheeks clenched and relaxed, driving him crazy with a desire he’d never truly known before. Suddenly, he couldn’t control the vision of his penis, hard and fully erect, plunging deep in-between those two, quivering cheeks. Callan could just barely see the soft lips of her vulva, slick and glittering with moisture. His breathing quickened and he was pretty sure he felt hers do the same.

“No,” she started to say, her voice barely a squeak, but Callan cut her off as he smashed his hand down over her pink, swollen cheeks, distracting himself from where his mind was attempting to go. He spanked her as if he were hammering a post into the ground, alternating his smacks to cover her whole, jiggly backside, and then concentrating on one spot for several moments to really drive the lesson in, listening as her cries intensified during those intervals. The pink shade very quickly gave away to a muddled maroon, and Kaelia wailed long, guttural, piteous sounds of remorse.

A chair is kicked out directly into my path, halting me in place. I turn to see where it’s come from and see Ethan is sat slouched in the chair opposite the one he’s shoved in my direction. Of course he’s in here. I should have thought about that, and I mentally kick myself for not thinking about him when I agreed to come in. My eyes scan around his table. It’s completely full. Every seat is taken, and there are people standing around on the edges, like they’re chatting to those that are sat down, only no one’s chatting right now. They’re all staring at me.

Ethan clears his throat and nods towards the only empty seat, which he’s kicked into my pathway. “I saved you a seat. Sit down and I’ll introduce you around.”

I pause whilst he stares back at me, his face totally expressionless unless you know him well and can detect the tenseness in his jaw. He’s not as comfortable as he’d like everyone to believe. We both know what this is. It’s a chance for me to slot into his life as his sister and take my place amongst his friends, to forget about the last six years. My eyes meet his and, just for a second, I see the hope that’s there before I shake my head.

No.

No, he can’t have it both ways. He can’t drop me as a twelve-year-old and then expect me to walk back into his life like nothing has happened. We can’t pretend the last five years didn’t happen and that he wasn’t there when I needed him. Neither of us say anything for a few seconds then I shove the chair back towards him with more force than is strictly necessary and go to move on.

“Izzy!”

I pause and look back at him. His eyes are still focused on me, but I’m acutely aware that it’s not just his eyes on me. His whole table is silent as they watch our exchange. “Just sit down, okay?”

“Yeah, come on, pretty girl. Sit with us.” I turn and see a grinning guy with light brown hair sat next to Ethan. It’s the same guy who was in my history class and wanted me to sit near him.

Ethan turns to face him. “Shut up, Logan. Didn’t you hear me this morning?”

The guy pales at the memory and the smile is wiped from his face. “Sorry, I’m just being friendly.”

“Well don’t,” Ethan snaps. He turns back to me. “Come on, sit down.”

“No, thank you.”

“Biz!”

I freeze completely, and my eyes find his. “Don’t call me that,” There’s a definite bite to my tone. Biz is what my mum used to call me. Ethan did too, to be fair, but I can’t hear that right now. Not when no one’s called me that since she died.

His eyes flash with annoyance. “Fine,” he bites out. “Take a seat, Isabella.” My eyes narrow, he knows I hate my full name and no one ever calls me it, not even teachers. I go by Izzy, as he knows full well. I shake my head and turn to walk away. “Actually, I heard you’re going by Kavanagh now.” There’s an edge to his voice that I’ve not heard before. “Been hearing all morning about the new girl Izzy Kavanagh.” Anger crosses his face, like it’s a personal insult to him that I’m not using the same surname as him. But why would I? I can’t stand my father, so why would I want his name? “Kavanagh,” he mutters like it leaves a bad taste, which is weird considering it’s his mum’s name too.

“I go by my mum’s name,” I tell him unnecessarily.

Your mum’s name?” he asks incredulously. “Yours?”

“Yeah, I think they know each other,” someone mutters nearby, and someone else replies, “No shit.” Apart from that, there’s total and utter silence from his friends as they watch our exchange.

Ethan doesn’t even notice them. His focus is solely on me as he shakes his head and his hands clench into fists on the table. “You’re unbelievable, do you know that? You finally decide to turn up after four days and then I hear you’re using Kavanagh. You’re a…” He stops himself from finishing and instead takes a deep breath, in through his nose and out through his mouth, as though he’s trying to calm himself down.

But I’m interested now. “I’m what?” I step towards him. This isn’t like him. Usually he’s happy-go-lucky. Usually he doesn’t show his real feelings; he’s an expert at covering them. “Finish your sentence, Ethan,” I say sharply.

He throws his hands up. “You know what? I should just be grateful you showed, right? That you showed up and are gracing me with your presence. That you’re not drunk for the first time in days. That I actually know where you are for once.”

My eyes bore into his. Why is he acting like he’s concerned? Why is he acting like he’s bothered about my behaviour? He can’t suddenly start acting like this after years of silence between us.

My silence just pisses him off further. “Or maybe I should just be thankful that we’re actually having a conversation, right? Because God knows you don’t talk to me anymore,” he mutters snaps.

Finally. Finally he’s not being the perfect all-American teenager who’s bothered by nothing.

“I don’t even know…” His voice trails off as he shakes his head, like he wasn’t actually aware of what he was saying.

“Speak up, Ethan,” I tell him, putting my lunch onto the table in front of me and crossing my arms. “Use your words. Formulate a proper sentence.” I say just because I want to see how far I can push him to get a reaction. “Even you can manage to do that.”

“You fucking bitch,” he snaps before he can think, and I start to laugh as there are shocked gasps around us. I’m amused because my perfect brother is finally losing his control and showing me some of his true feelings for a change.

“Whoa, whoa,” Finn starts, looking at him in surprise before glancing back at me. “We all just need to chill out.”

Neither Ethan nor I acknowledge him.

“Yeah,” Logan starts. “I think maybe you should go sit somewhere else, pretty girl.”

Ethan turns to glare at him. “Stop calling her that. I already told you guys to leave her alone. If I find out any of you guys have gone near her, I swear to God you’ll regret it.”

Finn looks startled at the anger in Ethan’s tone as I start to laugh and say, “It’s a bit late to start worrying about my honour, Ethan. That went a long time ago.”

He winces as he realises what I’m saying. At the look on my face, his wince turns into a glare. “Just shup up.” He turns to look back at his friends. “I mean it. She’s off limits.”

“We got it, E,” Finn assures him just as the blonde at Ethan’s side—the girl Pippa shied away from earlier, the one who’s been looking steadily more and more pissed off throughout our conversation—finally explodes. “WHAT THE HELL, ETHAN? Why are you telling people she’s off limits?”

He barely glances at her. “I’ll tell you later, Evie,” he says distractedly, dismissing her.

Evie. That’s the name of the girl I know I don’t like without even saying a word to her.

Ethan is reaching down and grabbing his bag, and he’s rounded the table before I tear my eyes away from Evie, having matched the look she’s giving me with one of my own. “Come on,” he starts, grabbing my arm. “I want to talk to you.”

I snatch my arm back from his grip. “Don’t touch me,” I snap. I already have one family member trying controlling me and telling me what to do. I don’t need another. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

That seems to be the last straw for Ethan. “You are a fucking nightmare. Do you know that? I’ve been worried about you all week and you just turn up like nothing’s wrong. You are so selfish and…” He stops abruptly, clamping his mouth shut as he realises just how much we’re being scrutinised, but I want to hear more.

“Go on,” I tell him, my voice low. “Tell me what you think.”

He takes a deep breath. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. Let’s just get out of here.”

I take a step closer to him. “Tell me what you think of me, Ethan,” I challenge quietly. I pause whilst he just glares back at me, his whole body radiating tension. When he doesn’t respond, I continue. “Do you want to know what I think of you?” There’s no need to raise my voice. There’s total silence around us, and it’s not just his table watching us anymore, but I don’t care. I’ve been itching to tell Ethan what I think of him for months, if not years, and if this is the place where I do it, so be it. I take another step closer to him. “I think that you are a pathetic excuse for a so—”

“WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?” Evie suddenly erupts from her place at the table. She stands and comes to face me, flanking Ethan on his left. “YOU DO NOT SPEAK TO US LIKE THAT.”

“I don’t remember speaking to you. Did I?”

Her jaw falls open. Clearly she’s not used to people speaking back to her. She crosses her arms over her chest and takes a step closer to me. “You need to be careful.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Is that so?”

“You don’t have a clue what you’ve just done.” Her dark blue eyes bore into me, and a smile takes over her lips. “You just made a big mistake,” she warns me. “You just committed social suicide, babe. I don’t care about your dumb accent or your designer handbag. You’re officially done here.”

“I’m done?”

“I’m gonna make sure of it. I’m gonna be your worst nightmare.”

Ethan’s head snaps to her in surprise, and he scowls in disgust. “Evie, stop. Don’t be such a bitch.”

She looks utterly flabbergasted that he’s defended me.

“I don’t need your help, Ethan,” I tell him.

He turns to me. “It would be really good if you could just shut your mouth right now, Biz.”

“Shut up.”

“What did you say?” Evie demands, pushing past Ethan to get closer to me. It’s obvious she’s getting more and more agitated that there’s something going on that she doesn’t understand.

“I said ‘Shut up.’ Want me to spell it for you?”

Her face turns red with fury and she leans towards me. “I don’t know who you think you are with that stupid accent—”

“British,” I interrupt her. “It’s a British accent. You might have heard of it? Collection of countries in Europe? The UK?”

She splutters for a minute. “Whatever. I don’t care where you came from—in this school you don’t speak to us like that, and you definitely don’t speak to Ethan Carlington like that. Do you even know who he is?”

I glance over at Ethan, who looks like he wishes he’d never bothered stopping me. “Yes, I’m aware of who Ethan Carlington is.”

“Well then you should know he’s not even on your level, babe. His dad owns this town, and if your family wants to settle in, it’s best not to piss off his son.”

Ethan’s jaw falls open at her words, and I wonder just how good she usually is at hiding her bitchy behaviour. I’ve no doubt this is her true character, but I wonder how often she actually shows it to Ethan and his friends, because the Ethan I knew would never tolerate this. He would never want to be around someone who behaves like this.

I tilt my head as I survey him. “Wow. Sounds like you’ve got a really great dad. Lucky you.”

He rolls his eyes at me in irritation, and it only infuriates her further.

“You’re done here,” she continues, glaring hard. “I wouldn’t even bother coming back if I were you.”

“Oh yeah?” I ask, taking a step towards her so we’re almost touching. She’s gorgeous, no doubt about that, and she definitely knows it, but she’s one of those girls who needs to make everyone else feel bad just to make herself feel better. “Why? What are you going to do?”

She smirks at me, and I can see it in her eyes. She thinks she’s going to shut me down the way she’s probably shut down countless girls before just because she doesn’t like something about them, or just because she’s bored. Either way, I can promise she’s not going to do it to me. “You just wait. You’ll regret ever stepping foot in this school. I’m gonna enjoy this.”

I grin and glance over at Ethan, who is staring at Evie in disbelief, like he doesn’t even recognise her. “Did you hear that, Ethan? Your little friend here is threatening me.”

“Could you stop trying to wind everyone up for just a second?” he snaps at me before turning to Evie. “And don’t talk to her like that. What is wrong with you?”

Evie’s face turns red at the reprimand. “I was just…I was sticking up for you.”

“Awww. It’s sweet that you want to fight your friend’s battles, but he’s a big boy.”

She turns back on me. “He’s my boyfriend,” she bites out, like it’s something I should just know. “And you can make sure you stay away from him.”

Of course she’s his girlfriend. Of course.

I start to laugh and look at Ethan, who looks positively mortified. “Seriously?” I ask. “This is your girlfriend?” I let my eyes sweep around the cafeteria, taking in the faces looking back at me. “Must be slim pickings around here if she’s the best you can do.”

It’s the final straw for Evie, and a growl leaves her mouth as she lunges at me, but Ethan catches her around the waist before she gets to me. He pulls her back, and she turns to look at him, hurt and confusion crossing her face. “Why are you defending her?” she asks him. “Why are you taking her side when she’s speaking to you like that?” She turns to look back at me. “Who are you?”

I stare back at her and let out a humourless laugh. “Who am I?” I step closer to her, my eyes boring into hers. I glance at Ethan, who is glaring back at me, before turning back to this girlfriend. “I’m his twin.” I pause as I watch her eyes widen in disbelief. “Who the hell are you?!”
