#1LineWed – Any Line

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is to choose any line from any page. Here is a line from Chapter 2 of The Uprising, book 3 of The Union series. It’s from Cyrus’s point of view. I’ll let you guess who he’s talking about.

“Fine, I don’t like the guy. Never have. Why the hell does he need to be here?”

Clouds hang heavy and soft waves tumble to shore in a soothing shush. Only the screech of the seagulls disrupts the tranquil morning.

#1LineWed – Emotions

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is emotions. With The Ruins publishing yesterday, this week’s line is from Found, the story of The Union from Cyrus’s point of view.

Once I’m sure she’s asleep, I whisper softly, “I love you, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

#1LineWed – Environment

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is environment. This is my last posting from The Ruins because it releases next Tuesday! This week’s line is from page 31 of The Ruins:

Waves crash ashore, spraying me, inching up to tease my toes before rushing back out, pulling some of the sand with it.

#1LineWed – Something Unexpected

My breath stalls in my lungs, my eyes freeze open, and I lock my knees to keep from collapsing.

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is to post any line from page 213, 21, or 13 from my work in progress. This week’s line is from page 213:

They’re getting these kids ready to, I don’t know what, but not to win. It’s as if they expect most of them not to come back.

#1LineWed – Page 14, 47 or 147

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is to post any line from page 14, 47, or 147 from my work in progress. I’m winding down final edits on The Ruins, which will release on June 16, so my days of playing 1LineWed are numbered until I get another project going. This week’s is from page 14:

I glance at Bryce, trying to decide how I feel about him this morning. I settle on pissed but no longer homicidal.

#1LineWed – Page 162, 62 or 16

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is to post any line from page 162, 62, or 16 from my work in progress. This is a line from page 162, taking place just seven pages after last week’s line:

Sure, he said we needed to talk, but he could’ve tried harder. He let me kiss him into silence.

#1LineWed – Page 155, 55 or 15

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is to post any line from page 155, 55, or 15 from my work in progress. Since my work in progress is, well, a work in progress, this required a bit of work on my part. I write in Scrivener and then send chapters as I complete them off to m y copy editor. I basically had to go through the chapters I sent off to figure out which chapter contained pages 15, 55 and 155. I’ve shared plenty from earlier chapters and wanted to go with page 155. So here it is, from The Ruins, releasing on June 16, 2015:

“What’s wrong?” I ask, unable to keep the tremor out of my voice.

He glances up at me and the pain in my eyes nearly tears me apart. “We should talk.”

#1LineWed – Questions

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is questions. Basically any line that ends in a question mark. Once I started searching for the ? in The Ruins, I realized there are a LOT of them. Here is one of my favorites though.

So, did you shoot any bad guys today?”
Bryce smiles. “Not today.”
“Oh.” Liam stares at the table as if someone just told him all his toys were stolen. “Do you think maybe tomorrow?”

#1LineWed – Chapter Endings

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is chapter closings. This is my favorite theme ever! I love chapter closings. I love coming up with hooks. Here is a closing line from an early chapter of The Ruins.

I check my tablet and see a text from Jack. One simple number that sends icy fear careening through my veins: 12

#1LineWed – Opening Lines

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is opening lines. After humor, and then last week’s practical jokes (in honor of April Fools Day), I’m delighted to have an easy one. So here it is, the opening line from The Ruins.

Grief, guilt, heartbreak, fear, loss, abandonment swirl in my head, creating a vortex of pain and confusion keeping me awake.

#1LineWed – Humor

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is humor. There’s not a lot of humor in a dystopian adventure. At least I didn’t think so until I started looking for it. Apparently there are more lighter moments than I remember writing.

“This job is about learning to trust your instincts, and right now your instincts are telling you I like my coffee extra hot with a splash of half and half.”

You can see previous week’s themes and lines here.

.

#1LineWed – Kissing

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is kissing. And really it’s not surprising that a chapter of the Romance Writers of America would have this theme. What does surprise me is that it’s taken so long to show up in the mix. Let’s face it, Evan likes to kiss, so I had a few nice moments to choose from, but this is what I settled on.

“His eyes close, shutting me out, but when his lips press against mine, everything I just saw in his eyes is in this kiss. “

You can see previous week’s themes and lines here.

.

#1LineWed – Exercise (Run, Jump, etc.)

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is exercise, as in running, jumping or some other exercise-type action. The Ruins has a lot more action than The Union, so I had a lot to choose from, but I settled on this sweet moment:

“If I wasn’t already crazy stupid in love, you jumping into a raging creek to save me would have pushed me over the edge. “

You can see previous week’s themes and lines here.

.

#1LineWed – Taste or Smell

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is smell or taste. Something not many people know about me is that I was born without a sense of smell. I spend a lot of time googling “What does ____ smell like.” And because smell and taste are very closely tied (or so people tell me, but I’m not sure I buy that), I’m going with a smell this week. This is also from my current work in progress, The Ruins, book 2 in The Union series.

The address is a warehouse in an enclosed portion of the Union that’s gloomy, dank, and smells like feet.

#1LineWed – Color

1LineWedToday’s theme for 1 Line Wednesday, sponsored by RWA’s Kiss of Death Chapter is color. Here is another line from The Ruins, the upcoming second book in The Union Series.

Dappled sunlight filters through colorful leaves, trimmed in vermillion, gold, and crimson, clinging to branches, not yet ready to give up their tenuous grasp on life.
