Excerpt #2
Madre Estela remained standing by the door. “Get a bucket and fill it with water.”

Her hypercritical eyes sliced through my self-worth as I grabbed one of the metal buckets, lifted it into the sink, and turned on the faucet. I watched, transfixed, as the water gushed like a torrent spurting from an open artery. The cold spray raised goosebumps on my arms.

Madre Estela snapped her fingers. “Move.”

As I hauled the bucket to the door, some of the water slushed over the edge and splattered to the floor.

“Add the detergent,” she said stiffly, irritated by my clumsiness.

I chose a green bottle, twisted the cap, and poured. The acrid pine smell stung my nostrils.

“Get a sponge and a brush from there. Get going. We don’t have all evening—unless you want to work in the dark.”

I gritted my teeth, but pretended not to be bothered. I suspected that the one thing that this nun couldn’t stand was indifference.

Outside, it was almost dusk. In spite of the intense screeching of the coquíes, the drum of the waterfall hit my ears. It was louder now than the last time I’d been here. How was that possible?

I felt a drop of rain. Great.

Madre Estela put one hand out, palm up. “My, my. What’s this?” She looked chagrined, and I suddenly realized why. If it rained, I would have to go inside, ruining her plans. “What are you standing there for? Start scrubbing.”

I was tempted to throw the bucket of greenish water at her face. Instead, I prayed for rain as I walked across the rose garden. Once at the gate, I glanced back at her.

“You’ll work until I come for you, understood?” she said, hands on hips in her usual stance. She pointed to one of the second-floor windows. “I’ll be watching from there.”

And that was it. She was gone.

For a moment I just stood there. If only my friends could see me now. They would never believe it.

I opened the gate and walked into the graveyard. The statue of Gabriel greeted me, its face fiercer in the dusk. The temperature must have been in the low seventies. I was glad I had my cardigan.

Suddenly, the garden lamp post lit up. I turned, startled. I wasn’t sure if it had automatically switched on or if someone, maybe Madre Estela, had done it from indoors. I glanced up at the second-floor window, expecting to find her face. I had the chilling sensation of being watched. There was nothing. The windows glowed with yellow light, a multitude of feral eyes keeping guard.

However, behind one of the ground-floor windows on the right, a figure appeared. Tall, blurred. Madre Superiora? I was sure that was her office. Yet, something about the shape of the head and the shoulders made me think of…Rubia. What was she doing in Madre Superiora’s office?

Just as abruptly as it’d appeared, the figure vanished from view.

The incident left me strangely unsettled.

Focus.

I splashed some of the water on one of the tombstones and got to work. The sound of hard bristles against stone blocked the hum of the waterfall. Almost.

Go away, damn it.

As I crouched to work on a second tombstone, doing my best not to get wet in the process, something shifted at the edge of my vision. I jumped to my feet, my heart thudding. Gabriel. Its wings had rippled with movement.

Dear God…what’s happening to me?

I rubbed my forehead and grimaced, my fingers shaking.

I felt another drop of rain. If it was going to rain, why didn’t it? The sky was playing with me, too. Mocking me.

I cursed the clouds and started scrubbing again.

I had another sensation of being watched and this time, yes, it was Madre Estela behind the window. I pretended I hadn’t seen her and tried to keep focused on the task at hand. The water had turned blackish with grime.

I don’t know how long I scrubbed. I lost track of time. But it was dark. My back and shoulders were sore and my hands stung from the harsh detergent.

Madre Estela was long gone from the window.

Half panting, I sat down on the edge of the tombstone and tossed the brush aside in disgust. I looked at the statue again, but it was motionless. I turned to the windows again, my eyes slowly moving from one to the other.

From one to the other.

Expecting to see the face. Wanting to see it.

Nothing.

Yet, that weird sensation of being watched, again.

My gaze shifted to the woods, to the exact place where the cemetery ended and the forest started. There was a path there. Narrow, obscured by the trees. For a long moment I sat, mesmerized. Then I stood up and began to approach it. The breeze picked up as I got closer, carrying with it the cool, slightly pungent smell of the waterfall.

I stopped at the very edge, the darkness enveloping me, the dampness seeping through my clothes.

The wind sighed, rustling the leaves and fluttering my hair.

Icy breath, on the back of my neck.

I’m in here… a voice whispered from the shadows.

I spun around in terror.

Then I hit something hard.

Excerpt #2
I beeline toward the office. Mal will be there, and Beast follows, whistling once, sharp and shrill. There’s a show on the center stage; a man in black leather and a long hooded cape is securing a little sub to the St. Andrew’s cross. His head lifts, and I can feel his gaze tracking us as Beast shadows me through the club. Then his attention goes back to the girl in front of him, dismissing us completely.

The thing is, I want to play. I’m not working, not more than I ever am here, and I want to cut loose. I want to find a girl, drag her to her knees, and ride the high of her submission.

I just can’t.

I slam into the office, and Mal pauses, in the middle of typing. His eyebrow raises, the only clue I get that my entrance is disturbing him, and I grin, because I don’t actually give a fuck.

He resumes typing and says, “I thought you had found him a girl, Beast.”

“I did. He doesn’t like her.” Beast doesn’t even look offended. He looks just as pissed as I feel.

“Why?”

“Why the fuck has he thrown back every girl I’ve brought him in the past six months, Mal? He’s a picky fucker.”

“I’m right here,” I say dryly.

Beast flicks a disgusted look at me, and points. “You shut up. There was nothing wrong with that sub.”

There wasn’t. She was lovely, she was submissive, and she was clearly dying for it, if the tiny tremors of arousal just from kneeling were any indication.

She was perfect.

And she was gonna take anything I gave her without ever telling me what she wanted.

“I don’t want just any sub,” I say, grumpy. Mal leans back, staring, waiting for me to continue.

“I want my sub,” I say, almost defiant, daring the two of them to say something, and for a moment, neither do, because there’s nothing to say—not to that.

I’m Samul Charming. I’m the heir to a pharmaceutical empire, the only son in a family of sisters, and my mama’s favorite. I’ve played my part of partyboy bachelor for years, quite happily. I like women, and I like fucking a lot of them. I like playing with a new sub, like seeing what I can do to make her break.

 —————————————————————————–

Excerpt #3
The foliage swallowed me. Sodden leaves gave under my shoes. Twisted limbs and giant ferns reached out to scratch my arms, my legs.

“Adelita!” I called, hastening my pace.

Flash of white ahead.

“Adelita!” No response. “Damn it. It’s getting freaking dark!”

Voices? I halted, panting.

Then broke into a run again. The mist, carried by the waterfall, clung to my lashes, my cheeks, my lips. I tasted its bitterness on my tongue.

Giggling.

“I’m here!” Adelita called.

I slowed my pace. Toward the end of the path, fibrous vines hung from branches like a curtain of snakes. I pushed them aside and staggered forward. Slowly, I looked up.

Against the blackening sky, the monster roared, cradled by twisted, stunted trunks and wisps of fog, looming over me in all its brutal magnificence. Its crystalline waters gushed ferociously, cascading into a murky, swirling pool that spiraled into a descending rock-studded stream gurgling with white iridescent foam.

A cloud of spray enveloped me, cold and impersonal like the wings of some giant bat. Had it not been for one of the vines, I would have fallen to my knees.

Cold water, sucking me down, searing my throat, my eyes. Can’t see, can’t breathe; his hands grab me; blackness, like tar, steals its way down my lungs, spreading its web and filling every corner, every crevice; utter agony before oblivion settles—

The sight of Adelita, standing at the edge of the pool, shook me out of my trance. She was very still, her skirt puffing from the thundering falls.

“Step back!” I shouted.

Slowly, Adelita lifted her arm and pointed to the center of the waterfall. “She’s in there.”

“Who?” When she didn’t answer, I answered for her. “The ghost? Your invisible friend?”

Adelita lowered her arm. She seemed to have fallen into one of her sudden spells.

“Is that who you were speaking to?” I said urgently.

She was silent.

“Adelita,” I coaxed. She was about ten yards from me. I took one step toward her, my toes curling. “Please… step back.”

“She wants to speak to us,” Adelita said, moving closer to the edge.

“What’s wrong with you? Stop!”

She turned her head to look at me. When she smiled, her teeth looked unnaturally white, as if the iridescence of the foamy water reflected on them.

I edged a little closer and extended my hand. “Please.” I clenched my teeth. “I can’t come any closer,” I said, stressing each word. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing reality to go away, willing it all to be a nightmare. But when I opened my eyes, Adelita’s toes stood just over the edge. For an instant, as if suspended, she seemed to sway, before she opened her wings like an angel about to take flight.

“No!” I sprang forward and seized her arm. She twisted, lost her balance and clutched at my gold chain—“No!”—The gold snapped. I grabbed her shirt and jerked her toward me. We staggered in a drunken embrace before stumbling to the ground. My hand groped wildly around my neck, but my pendant, the most precious object I possessed, was gone. I searched for it on my hands and knees, my flesh sinking into the cold, wet earth.

Then I stood and stared hard at her.

Smudged with dirt, she sagged against a moss-covered boulder. “It’s in there,” she said, her gaze lowered, pointing to the water.

“How do you know?”

“I saw it fall,” she said.

A jolt of nausea hit me and I held my stomach. “That can’t be.”

I stared at the swirling pool and thought I saw it twinkling in the depths. I squeezed my eyes shut—for an eternity, it seemed—before I spun and grabbed Adelita and shook her violently. “You’re lying! That’s what you do. You lie.” I kept shaking her. I wanted to hurt her, hurt her. That was the only way to ease my pain.

She started whimpering, in a manner not unlike my sister Sara. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she kept saying.

I shoved her away and reeled backwards. I felt breathless, delirious.

I glanced one more time at the swirling pool, before I grasped her muddy hand and we headed back. She didn’t resist, an obedient, repentant little child.

By the time we got back to the graveyard, it was already dark. The lamp post cast an iridescent glow on the white roses and tombstones.

To my dismay, Madre Estela had just stepped out of the garden gate and was marching in our direction. With the light behind her, her face was a black mask. But her chin was high and her stride purposeful.

As if out of habit, she went for Adelita first. “What are you doing here? You haven’t done any of your chores.”

I stepped forward and shielded Adelita with my arm. “This isn’t her fault,” I said quickly. “I told her to come and help me.”

She bared her teeth. “Help do what?” she said, her eyes sweeping over our dirt-covered hair and clothes.

“We heard voices coming from there,” I said, gesturing. “We thought one of the girls had gotten lost, so we decided to take a look.”

This made her pause, but only for an instant—before her hand came down, hard and brutal. I staggered backwards, more from shock than pain. No one had ever slapped me before. I touched my burning cheek and just stared at her.

“Voices here, voices there,” she said, disgusted, as if she couldn’t stand to hear more of it. “There are no voices, do you understand? No voices,” she repeated, as if she were trying to convince herself of the fact.

“You should know better than listen to Adelita’s lies.”

Adelita didn’t even flinch when Madre Estela twisted her ear. I thought she was going to wrench it off her head right in front of my eyes.

“Pick up the things and go change immediately, both of you,” she ordered, “before you catch pneumonia.”

Before we went inside, I glanced back at Madre Estela. The vegetation rose up behind her, dark and menacing. Her eyes seemed strangely unfocused. She was clutching her wooden cross and murmuring a prayer. A gust of wind rattled the branches.

Synopsis
From New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Hamilton

High School can be a witch.

A teen girl with the ability to predict deaths through her drawings shouldn’t need to lie constantly to make her life sound interesting. But that doesn’t stop Emily from spinning stories faster than she can keep up.

After transferring to a new school, Emily’s ‘dull’ life is shaken by the appearance of a boy who seems unfazed by her far-fetched stories. A too-handsome-for-his-own-good senior, Noah has some secrets of his own. He needs Emily’s special gift to save him from Sarah, queen bee of the school’s It Girls, whose own supernatural abilities have forced him into a life of silence and solitude.

But when Emily tries to free him from Sarah’s voodoo curse, things go belly up, landing Emily on Sarah’s hit list. Soon, Emily and Noah are on a collision course with the It Girls, leading to a shocking revelation that ties them together in unimaginable ways. If their powers remain unchecked, this teenage popularity contest could spell the death of them all …

Romantically charged and eerily chilling, Something Like Voodoo weighs the choice of saving your life versus fighting for a life worth saving. This paranormal romance will put a spell on you.

 —————————————————————————–

Excerpt #3
Chills jolted across every inch of my flesh. As I turned to bolt, a man shouted behind me, “Hey! You can’t be here!”

I peeked in again, but Sarah and the It Girls were gone. I took off running, my shoes slapping the pavement as the night guard fell into step behind.

“Stop!” he yelled.

Yeah. That was gonna work.

I didn’t slow until I cleared the fence. The guard glared from the other side of it, but he made no effort to see if the wire fence would hold his weight as well as it had mine. But I wasn’t so concerned with him as I was with who loomed in the far distance behind him. By the entrance to the Forst building stood Sarah and the other It Girls, watching after me, the stones on their matching choker necklaces glowing green.

It was as though they had nothing to fear, no one to run from the way I did. It was as though…as though I was the only one who could see them.

But that would be…crazy.

I blinked away the thought in time to realize the guard had made his way over to a gate and was trying his keys in the locks. I spun on my heel, sprinted back to my car, and peeled out onto the main road as fast as I could. A glance in the rearview mirror, and my stomach jumped to my throat. My mom stood in the street in front of the asylum.

But when I glanced again, she was gone.

I couldn’t go back. I hadn’t seen Mom. No way. Sarah must have found some way to mess with me—those hallucinations Noah said she was capable of. I couldn’t know anything for sure until I learned more about the symbols she was using and the words she’d chanted and what role Noah played in it all and why he needed me to help him.

Once I veered onto the highway, I pulled over and puked Dad’s pasta dinner into the bushes on the side of the road.

I still wasn’t a hundred percent sure what was going on, but whatever it was, I was way out of my league.

Synopsis
From USA Today Bestselling Author, Elisabeth Grace…

Jackie Davenport will try anything once, especially in the bedroom. Anything except falling in love. She lives a carefree existence packed full of fun, but free from emotional entanglements and that’s just how she wants to keep it. When she meets the new police officer in town, she’s unable to deny the connection between them. His over confidence and bullish ways grate on her…still she can’t help but find herself falling into his bed AND falling for him.

Jamie McTavish is man enough to admit that he probably didn’t make the best first impression when he met the 911 Operator. That doesn’t mean there isn’t still sizzling sexual tension between them. He’s a man of action and he’s not content to sit on the sidelines until Jackie works out her issues. But trying to tame this tiger might be too big of a challenge for even him.

WARNING: In order to enjoy this book you need to be a fan of hot sex with equally hot guys and enjoy brooding alpha males. LOL

Indecision Teaser 1

Excerpt #1
Jesus Christ, was she trying to kill me? I’d been here for hours and as if the sight of Jackie in her cute sundress wasn’t enough, I’d had to spend the past hour watching her bounce around the pool while a group played volleyball. The chocolate brown bikini she was wearing clung to her firm figure and left little to the imagination. She’d pulled her dark hair up into a messy bun and the green in her eyes seemed even more prominent than usual because of the sun she’d gotten on her face earlier.

“Jamie, why don’t you join us?” Ben yelled across to me from the pool. “Patterson has to get back to the Mrs., and we need someone to sub in.”

I’d brought my suit since the invite referred to the event as a retirement/pool party. Getting a closer view of Jackie in that flimsy scrap of fabric she called a swimsuit wouldn’t hurt either.

“Give me a minute, and I’ll go change,” I shouted back.

Jackie’s lips formed a thin line, as if she didn’t approve of my joining their little game, which only made it that much sweeter for me. The sexual tension that had been thrumming between us had me wanting to get under her skin. I figured if I couldn’t touch it, I could get under it at the very least.

But by the time I made my way over to the pool, the game had changed and the guys were now playing with the women hoisted up on their shoulders. I felt a grin forming on my face. This ought to be fun. My gut tightened when I saw Jackie’s tanned legs wrapped around the shoulders of the guy she’d left me to go speak to earlier. They certainly seemed cozy with one another. What was the deal with those two?

I mentally shook it off. I had no claim to her. Jackie could do what she wanted. As could I.

I politely pushed my way through the crowd on the patio area and caught Jackie’s eye a moment before I reached the pool. I grinned with satisfaction when I noticed her gaze dart down the expanse of my chest and back up. When she caught me looking at her perusal of my assets, her eyes flared for a second and then morphed into an expression that reminded me of a child who’d been caught doing something wrong.

I chuckled and dove into the pool. “Okay, what are we playing?” I asked once I surfaced.

“Jamie, you get Sylvia on your shoulders,” Ben said.

I glanced over at the blond waiting in the corner of the pool. She gave me a coy smile. I didn’t know who Sylvia was, but I smiled warmly and introduced myself.

“I’m Jamie. Good to meet you.” I held my hand out for her.

She giggled for a second, then shook it. “Sylvia, pleasure. I’m glad you decided to join us.”

Someone made a disgusted sound behind me. “Are you guys going to ogle each other all afternoon or are we going to play?” It was Jackie, and she sounded irritated. If I didn’t know better, I would’ve guessed jealous.

I turned to face her, almost laughing. She looked pouty with her hands crossed over her chest and a scowl on her face.

“Hold up there, princess. Give us a minute.” I grinned, knowing my comment would antagonize her further.

She made another sound of frustration and uncrossed her arms.

“You ready to kick their ass?” I asked Sylvia.

“Definitely!” She flipped her platinum hair behind her shoulder and smiled.

I swam down under the water where Sylvia had widened her stance and put my head between her legs, rising up out of the water so that her thighs rested on my shoulders. When I came up out of the water, I saw Jackie bending down as best she could and whispering into her partner’s ear. The guy whose shoulders she was on patted her leg and nodded. My jaw clenched at the sight of his hand on her thigh.

“Alright. Three points until match. You all set?” the guy who was acting as referee shouted.

Everyone on both sides nodded, and I spread apart from my other teammates to cover the most ground. As I watched the muscles in Jackie’s thighs clench around the other guy’s neck, I vowed that I, too, would have my head between Jackie’s legs before the night was over.

All of that changed when he discovered the truth of the lalassu. Suddenly, he fell deep into a rabbit hole of paranormal powers, shadowy conspiracies and millennia-old secrets. Now, his old no-nonsense approach to his job just doesn’t work any longer. If he wants to stop his old enemy, André Dalhard, from hurting anyone else, Joe will need to find a more flexible option.

A master of disguise, Cali has assumed so many identities over the years that remembering who she was born to be is impossible. Abandoned on the streets as a child, she was rescued by André Dalhard. She’s served him loyally for many years, using her shape-shifting abilities to take on new personas in the blink of an eye, such as Boomerang, the master thief. To save Mr. Dalhard from prison, she becomes Colleen Avila, a meek and mild personal secretary.

Joe initially planned to use Colleen as a confidential informant, but wasn’t prepared for the intensity of his feelings for her. Making Bad Choices Teaser 1

Excerpt #3
Twenty minutes after Josh and my dad left, Culter walked in through my door. He said nothing, just crawled onto my bed, grabbed me and rolled me on top of him.

My knees went to either side of his hips, but I laid the rest of my weight on his chest. “Good morning,” I said as my hair fell down like a curtain around us.

Hands going behind his head, he grinned wide. “I missed you.”

The tip of my nose brushed over his. “Weirdly, I missed you too . . . weird because I was with you or near you all day and night.”

His hands gripped my legs. “I like that. And, you can fall asleep like this; I’ll be fine lying right here until you wake up.”

“Weirdo.” I leaned in, whispering over his lips, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” I pressed my lips into his. I loved being above him, because I could press into him and kiss him as hard and as deeply as I wanted. My hands ran up under his shirt, up the perfect ridges of his abs, until I decided that I didn’t have enough access.

Leaning away, I whispered, “Take it off.”

His brows rose, eyes melting with a mixture of humor and desire. Grabbing the hem of his shirt, he pulled it over his head, and then smiled at me. His head turned and he looked quickly away toward the door to my room. “What was that?”

“What?” I asked, looking.

And then I heard it, someone was in the house, footsteps clunking down my hall toward my room. “Culter?” my dad’s voice called from outside my door. Then from further down the hall, he yelled, “Culter?”

Fuck!

My hand covered Culter’s mouth and we lay very still, staring at my door. The line on the knob of my door pointed straight across. Fuck, again! That meant unlocked!

A light knock sounded on my door. “Cassie, are you still awake?”

Culter’s hands squeezed on my legs.

Across the room, my knob turned.

“Dad! I’m changing! Don’t come in!”

The knob stopped turning. “Oh, sorry, honey. Have you seen Culter?” he asked, his voice muffled right outside my door.

Culter’s hand came up and gently pulled my hand from his lips. Arching up, he whispered right into my ear. “Say I went out.”

“He already left, Dad!” I yelled.

“His truck is here,” my dad said back.

“Spencer picked him up!”

“Oh. That’s different.” He paused, and then said, “Do you know where Josh’s backpack is? I think it has his tablet in it, and we need it for the drive.”

“Um, in his room?” I grimaced.

“No, I think it might still be in Culter’s truck. Damn, I’ll try to call him.”

“Fuck,” Culter whispered, quickly he moved his hip up, his hand digging into his back pocket. “Fuck. I can’t get it.”

I climbed off him, letting him get at his back pocket. He grabbed out his phone, flicking the silence switch on. Half a second later his phone lit up with ‘Frank’ written across his screen. We both watched until the screen went dark, and then looked over to the door.

“He’s not answering. Do you know if he took his keys with him?”

Culter shook his head.

“He left them,” I said.

“No, I brought the keys with me,” Culter whispered, too late.

I covered my lips and shut my eyes tight.

“Cassie, I’m sorry to ask this, but would you go get them for me? I know Culter doesn’t want me in his room.”

I paused. “Oh, okay, Dad. One second.”

Turning to Culter, I held my hands out.

He leaned in. “Let’s just tell him,” he whispered into my ear.

Leaning back, I shook my head, furiously.

Looking to the ceiling, then back to my gaze, he pointed to my closet and nodded. As quietly as possible, we both stood. Culter walked and I tiptoed over to my closet.

As I shut him inside, he whispered, “My keys are in my top drawer.”

“Everything okay?”

I spun. “Fine! I’m all dressed now.” Turning to head to my door, I spotted Culter’s red shirt lying across my bedspread out of the corner of my eye. “Crap,” I whispered, running over, I stuffed it under my blanket.

The door opened, and my dad stood revealed in the doorway.

Excerpt
As Braden drove me home, I lost any feeling of comfort I’d gained, and my palms began to glisten with sweat. I felt more anxious than I had when we’d first started the evening. The “end of the date” moment was near, and all I could think about was a possible kiss and Courtney’s advice of melting into it. I had a terrible fear that I was going to do the exact opposite and be as stiff as a new pair of skates.

We pulled up in front of my house, and I rubbed my hands on my sweater. Braden shut off the engine, and I longed to know his next move. Was he going to say goodnight there or was he going to walk me to the door?

He stepped out of the Jeep, answering my question. I climbed out, and he took my hand as we walked up to the porch, lit only by the dim gaslight lamps on either side of the front door. My pulse was seriously racing. I hadn’t been that nervous since I’d skated at the Olympics three years ago.

Braden faced me, and I looked up into his soft brown eyes. I could barely catch my breath because my heart was beating so fast. I’m going to have a heart attack and die before I even have the chance to kiss a boy.

“I thought your dad might be out here with a breathalyzer,” he said. “My dad actually did that with one of my sisters’ boyfriends.”

“Oh, no.” I laughed, but I secretly hoped that Dad might pop through the front door and save me from this nerve-wracking moment.

“I’m really glad we got to hang out tonight,” Braden said.

“Me too. I had a great time.”

He squeezed my hand and shifted his weight, and I sensed he was anxious, too, but probably nowhere near my level of freak-out. My face and neck were growing hotter by the second, and I prayed Braden couldn’t see how red they were in the low light.

“I’d love to see you again,” he said, stepping closer.

I nodded. “Definitely.”

He smiled and inched further forward, and I felt myself tightening with nerves. It was the same sensation I got sometimes before a critical jump in my programs, and it often meant I ended up sprawled on the ice. What if Braden kissed me and I made it just as much of a disaster?

No feelings.

No lies of calling the next day, and no empty promises of not banging anyone’s mother.

If I could act like I’ve never met a set of twins I screwed on the same night, thinking they were the same person, then I could do this.

It was the perfect set up for a fake relationship and it was simple.

We faked our smiles, we faked our laughs; hell, we even faked our love. It wasn’t real.

But that kiss was anything but fake, and the orgasm was anything but pretend.

Somehow my plus one had become more, and now I’m standing here with my underwear around my ankles wondering what in the hell to do next.

“Yes, sign it,” he declares seriously. “We have to make this look and feel real if anyone is going to believe it. But we need to protect ourselves in the process. So this paper is a reminder that we won’t break these rules. Rules that will keep us within an inch of crossing the line from fake to a real couple,” he informs, making more sense than I pegged him for.

I snatch it from him, looking it over.

No falling in love with me. Even though you’ll really want to.

No sleeping in bed because Rae wants me to wear her legs like earmuffs.

No sex because Rae has an eighties bush and something might bite me.

No kissing on the mouth because Rae wants me to kiss her somewhere else.

I roll my eyes. “Your ego is obviously bigger than your brain,” I opine.

“But not as big as something else.” He winks like the devil and I avert my eyes back to the paper in fear I’ll look at his package. It’s hard. Keeping my self-control intact that is…

Synopsis
They believe love conquers all.

One of pro-hockey’s golden couples, Andrew and Caryn Chadwick live in the limelight reserved for elite professional athletes. On their second anniversary, Andrew receives an unexpected contract offer to join the Tampa Suns. As they look forward to a new adventure, neither foresees an event that challenges their love and threatens their marriage.

Until the day it doesn’t.

A sudden and senseless accident threatens Andrew’s life and inexplicably drives a wedge between the couple. Shattered by the incident, paralyzed by fear that it could happen again, Caryn finds herself at odds with her husband and unable to provide the support he needs—at the time he is most vulnerable.

As their perfect world crumbles, each makes choices that take Andrew and Caryn further apart. Distrust, fears, and secrets construct walls. This Piece of My Soul follows the joint and separate paths the couple navigate as each hopes to rediscover the love that can conquer all.

**Although This Piece of My Soul is the second book in the Clearing the Ice Series, it can be read as a standalone novel.**

Excerpt (Chapter 1)
Andrew Chadwick jerked awake as the phone vibrated on the bedside table. He glanced at the screen as he quickly pressed “ignore.” He slipped from the bed, hoping the noise and movement didn’t wake his wife. His eyes adjusted to the darkness and satisfied that Caryn still slept, he grabbed clothes and headed downstairs. Don Wilson calling in the middle of the night can only bring news I don’t want to hear. Andrew quickly texted a response to his agent, then dressed and splashed cold water on his face. He grabbed a Coke, and quietly opened the door to the courtyard patio. He sat in the Toronto predawn light, staring at the phone a few minutes before he returned the call.

Don apologized before Andrew could speak. “Sorry to call so early. I know you’re headed out today and had to catch you before you two fall off the grid.”

“What can’t wait ten days?” Andrew twisted the bottle cap and took a long drink.

“Tampa sent an offer sheet an hour ago.”

“Hudson signed with Chicago?”

“Late last night.”

Andrew sighed. “How much?” He closed his eyes and his agent relayed the amount and terms. Not what I want to deal with today. “The Blues’ response?”

“Just got off the phone with Jenkins. Andrew, if you sign the sheet, the Blues can’t match the offer without making some quick moves. This totally blows up their salary cap.”

“No indication they’re interested in a deal?”

Don barked a laugh. “Oh, they might sign the deal we discussed last month.”

Andrew’s fingers drummed against the table. “Your take on their lack of interest up to now?”

“The Blues can’t afford you long-term; you’ll be traded before your current contract expires.” Wilson waited a beat. “The Suns are a contender right now, Andrew. They want you to fill a huge hole in the starting line. This may be the offer you can’t refuse.”

“How long do I have?”

“Obviously, the Suns would like your answer as quickly as possible. They’re willing to fly us down so we can discuss this face-to-face, and you and Caryn can look at the area. I can hold them off a while, but probably not ten days.”

Andrew stood and walked across the patio. “No, I don’t want this hanging over our heads that long.”

“If you tell me your trip plans, I will rebook it out of Tampa.”

“Good try, Don, but no, I’ll take care of that.” He laughed a little. “Give me a few hours. I need to discuss this with Caryn and think things through.”

Slipping his iPhone into his pocket, Andrew stepped back inside. Way too early to wake Caryn. His thoughts drifted to the trip they were scheduled to begin that morning. An anniversary tradition that began with their honeymoon two years earlier. Destination his secret and Caryn packing according to his ambiguous suggestions—casual or formal, warm or cold, passport just in case. Despite her best efforts to pry information from him—even during their most intimate moments—Caryn never knew the destination until they arrived at the airport. Even then, he might insert a plane change mid-route.

Last year, she thought they were going to California’s wine country, but when the plane landed in San Francisco, he took her hand and led her to another gate. He laughed softly as he remembered her expression of delight, mixed with pure panic at the thought of getting on another plane that would take them over the Pacific Ocean to reach the final destination, Fiji. He’d pushed her to her limit…well, beyond her limit. Despite the unforgettable ten days in the lush secluded villa, he carefully planned this year’s trip to minimize her discomfort.

Andrew leaned against the counter and gazed out the kitchen window, the darkness slowly retreating. Tampa’s offer cast a shadow over their plans, not just the anniversary trip but the upcoming move back to St. Louis before training camp. Caryn’s made St. Louis a second home, her client list managing corporate and individual social media accounts expanding monthly. Not to mention that her best friend, Lauren, just landed a marketing job in St. Louis and plans to move from Vancouver in just a few weeks.

He pushed away from the counter and wandered to the living room, closing his eyes and sitting back in the chair. It’s a no-win situation. If I sign the Suns’ offer sheet, the Blues will either decline to match—or worse, trade teammates to keep me.

His ambitions had never included owning one of the highest contracts on a team. But, if he didn’t sign the offer sheet, his agent’s prediction very likely would play out. Come March, he’d find himself playing on a different team, worst-case scenario traded to one of the teams in the midst of rebuilding.

The Suns were a contender now. They’d made it to the Stanley Cup Final last season. They couldn’t re-sign the league’s leading scorer, but extended the offer sheet to the Blues last night. The offer catapulted him into an entirely new level, both in terms of money and the pressure of replacing the team’s leading scorer. Andrew knew he could fill the slot—on the ice at least—but at what cost to Caryn, their friends in St. Louis, the chemistry that existed among his linemates?

He didn’t hear Caryn approach until her hand rested on his shoulder. “You’re up early, Drew. I planned to surprise you with breakfast in bed.” She pressed her lips against the top of his head. “Happy second anniversary.”

Andrew slipped his arm around her waist and drew her onto his lap. “My favorite day of the year,” he whispered before her kiss chased all thoughts of Tampa from his mind.

“Shall we just skip the breakfast part?” Her voice purred in his ear.

He closed his arms around her, his mouth finding hers. He shifted his body until he could stand with her locked in his embrace. He stepped across the room and gently placed her on the sofa, breaking the kiss with a soft curse as his phone vibrated in his pocket. He sat on the edge of the sofa as he pulled the phone from his pocket and glanced at the display. Don. Again. Now what?

“You’ve got something?” He caught Caryn’s questioning look at the impatient tone in his voice as he stood and began to walk across the room.

“Just spoke with Jenkins again. Wanted to see if they are open to revisiting our contract negotiations before you decide anything.”

“And?” He stopped for a moment, anticipating the response.

“He said their offer is on the table.”

“Take it or leave?” Andrew felt Caryn’s hand grasp his shoulder, but he shrugged it off as he continued pacing.

“More or less. You owe it to yourself to talk with the Suns. The Blues best offer is two years only. You could be looking at a long-term deal with Tampa.”

“Yeah. Give me a little more time. I’ll call you back.” He ended the call and tossed the phone across the table before turning toward the door. His mounting frustration threatened an angry release.

“Drew?”

He held up his hand. “A couple minutes, Cary. I need to clear my mind.” Without waiting for her reply, he jerked the door open and stepped outside, closing it firmly behind him.

#

Caryn shut her eyes tightly, and then sighed as she picked his cell phone off the floor and set it on the table. Her first reaction when his phone vibrated had centered on the fear that something had happened to his parents—or his brother, Tom. From the few words he spoke, Caryn knew Andrew had received some news from his agent. Don was the only other person she could imagine calling this early…and it sounded like this was not their first conversation today. Drew obviously hadn’t expected whatever Don told him. Take it or leave? Contract issues? This early in the morning? Don knows we’re leaving today, but this early? Another trade? After his best season ever? Of course, that didn’t stop the Leafs from trading him to the Blues. I hate the uncertainty that hockey brings to our lives. But it’s part of the package I signed on for when he asked me to marry him. We’ll get through whatever it is… together.

Taking a deep breath, she headed toward the kitchen to begin preparing the “surprise” breakfast. Maybe this would help to restore the anticipation and excitement the day had promised.

She grabbed a bottle of water and set the table after placing his favorite blueberry muffins—his mom’s recipe—in the oven. Checking the time, Caryn decided to take a quick shower and dress. She had no clue what Andrew had planned for their trip. She’d packed for warm weather as he’d suggested, adding some “just-in-case” clothes for cooler evenings. Ten days somewhere just the two of them, totally off the grid—no iPads, laptops, texting, and phones turned off. Only Tom knew how to reach them in case of an emergency. Drew called those ten days a selfish gift to themselves, giving them time to just be together before training camp and the season to come, bringing with it the many days they’d spend apart… But what if this… whatever it is… gets in the middle of our trip? Forces him to cancel? I know he has another year on this contract, but what if…?

Pushing the thoughts to the back of her mind, she focused instead on the day, the excitement that had rippled through her the moment she woke up. She couldn’t wait to learn his plans for this year… even if it did involve another incredibly long flight over water.

#

The muffins sat cooling on top of the counter when Andrew returned. He quickly pulled Caryn into his arms and kissed her temple as he apologized for walking out.

“What’s going on, Drew?” Caryn moved back so she could see his eyes.

“I’m not sure what to think.” His blue eyes locked on hers. “Remember when we talked about Don working with the Blues on a contract extension?”

“I know you’re not happy with the length of the new contract… just two years?”

“Yep, then we’re back in the same place we are now, without a ‘no move’ clause.” He paused and gently brushed the hair away from her forehead. “The Tampa Suns submitted an offer sheet last night.” Caryn started to ask a question, but Andrew continued, “I’m a restricted free agent. Any team can offer a contract to a RFA, but if the player signs it, the current team has a week to match the offer.”

“Tampa wants to sign you?”

“Yeah—their leading scorer, a free agent, signed with Chicago last night.”

Caryn smiled as she softly placed her hand against his cheek. “And they hope to entice you to take his place.”

Andrew laughed quietly. “I guess. The Blues already told Don if I sign the offer sheet, the Blues wouldn’t match it.”

“I guess Don already spoke with the Blues about a contract extension?”

“Yep.” He shook his head slightly. “The last offer they put on the table is the most they are willing to commit. I doubt I’m in their long-term plans.”

“Why not?” Caryn’s voice rose in anger. “You only scored the most points last year and the year before.”

Andrew placed his finger against her lips as he told them what Tampa had offered. “Don thinks the Blues can’t afford me long-term.”

Caryn broke eye contact as she looked down, processing everything. When she met his eyes again, she shrugged. “Would you want to play for the Suns?”

“Right now, I honestly don’t know. I do know that we need to make this decision together.”

“I’m happy anywhere, as long as I’m with you.”

Andrew shook his head. “You have friends in St. Louis—your best friend is moving there next month. Your business, your clients…”

“That’s the best thing about my job—I can work anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi connection. Lauren and I do a pretty good job maintaining our friendship long-distance. I don’t expect to see her very much anyway, at least not when you-know-who’s in town.” She gave him a knowing look and a smile. “Don’t you think you should at least meet with them and see what you think?”

“You mind if we rearrange our trip a bit?” His eyes captured hers again. “Maybe a stop in Tampa before we go to…” He laughed softly as Caryn looked at him expectantly. “Before we go where we’re going.”

“Drew! That’s not fair.”

He replied with a wink and glanced at the counter. “Are those what I hope they are?”

“Maybe. If I give you one, will you give me a hint?”

“I already told you what to pack.”

Caryn lightly swatted his arm as he reached for a muffin. “So… do I need to pack anything else if we go to Tampa?”

Andrew pretended to think as he bit into the warm muffin. “No, I think we’re good.” He guided her to the table. “Sit, I’ll serve you.”

Caryn’s eyes followed him as he pulled glasses from the cupboard and poured the orange juice. She shifted on the chair in anticipation of the upcoming ten days together—just the two of us.

He set a glass at each plate, and then brought the plate of muffins. He glanced at her as he sat beside her. “What are your feelings about private jets?”

“How small?”

“I don’t know. Don said the Suns would send a plane for us—unless that’s going to stress you too much.” A grin spread slowly across his face. “I can book commercial flights if you prefer.”

Caryn took a deep breath. “You know I’ll be glued to your side if I get on a private jet.”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way.” He cupped her chin in his hand. “Seriously, we can fly commercial.” She felt him watching her face closely for a reaction.

“No, I’ll be okay. I made it through those flights to and from Fiji last year. I think I can handle anything now. We don’t fly over water to get to Tampa?” she asked quickly.

Andrew laughed softly. “Only briefly if we do. It’s on a bay and the Gulf of Mexico.”

“Just so it’s not one of those really small planes.” Caryn bit into a muffin, hoping to mask her apprehension.

“I’ll have Don check that out.” Andrew reached in his pocket for his phone, and then pushed back his chair. “That’s right, last time I had my phone I was throwing it across the table.”

Caryn bit back a laugh as she watched him stride toward the living room, and then reached for her orange juice. She shifted the thought of a move to Tampa to the back of her mind. Our true home will always be Toronto. Where we live the rest of the time really doesn’t matter. She heard Andrew questioning Don about the private jet and felt her cheeks flush as he walked back into the kitchen, meeting Caryn’s eyes as he listened to Don’s response.

“So no Cessna or propeller plane? Let me check with Caryn.” He looked at her with a grin. “He’s pretty sure it’s a Gulfstream, probably the latest model.”

“Just like my dad’s. Okay, I’ll do it, but if I see anything that seats less than five, we’re going to renegotiate.”

Andrew’s laugh was soft. “I’m with you on that one, babe.” He repeated her response, listened a moment, and nodded as he ended the call. He slid into the seat beside Caryn. “Your stipulation’s now added to the offer.”

“Drew, he’s not telling them that?”

“Sounded like it to me.” He tipped her chin as he leaned to kiss her. “If they are willing to put that kind of money of the table, the size of your private jet will not be an issue.” He kept a neutral expression as Caryn felt her face redden.

“Great first impression. They’ll think I’m a bitchy diva or something worse.” Caryn buried her face in her hands. “Please call Don back and tell him never mind.”

“Nope. You think I want to get on some prop plane?”

“Then don’t make it sound like I’m one of those demanding…”

Andrew silenced her with a kiss. “I’m just teasing you. The jet’s been at the airport since they sent the offer—a nice big private jet.”

Caryn swatted at his arm. “When do we need to leave?”

“As soon as I finish these muffins.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “Did you pack your bikini?” His blue eyes were hypnotic as he captured her gaze.

“Do I need it?”

“Not necessarily.” He reached to pick up the phone. “I’ve got just a couple calls to make and, no, you can’t eavesdrop.”

Caryn leaned to kiss him before she stood. “Don’t worry, I have no desire to spoil your surprise.”

Synopsis
For twenty years, Caryn Stevens dutifully followed the educational path dictated by her parents. That path had one goal—prepare her to one day assume her father’s position as CEO of the multi-billion dollar international company he founded. That and marry a man who would enhance her career and perhaps join her in leading The Stevens Company. Not too much to expect from your daughter, right?

Caryn has other ideas. Instead of returning home to Ottawa for another summer working at The Company, she’s designed a plan to stay in Toronto, take a couple of courses, and enjoy her Summer of Fun. She knew there was more to college than rigorous classes that held little interest and study groups to ensure she excelled in all her subjects. She had two years until she finished her undergrad, and then continue on to that coveted MBA at a prestigious business school.

Just this once, Caryn will set aside The Plan and enjoy life as a regular student.  To actually get her head out of the books and maybe, just maybe find someone to make the summer—dare she say it?—exciting.

You see, there’s this hunk of a guy she’s noticed on campus the first few weeks of summer. Always running—maybe in training?—but, Caryn’s seen enough to get her heart pounding. Tall, well-built, with shaggy light-brown hair. Gym shorts that emphasize taut leg muscles. Sometimes wearing a t-shirt with cut-off sleeves. Bronzed muscular biceps—truly drool-worthy. Absolutely hot—and gorgeous in a totally guy type of way. Only problem, he had no clue she existed.

Andrew Chadwick has enjoyed life in the fast lane in the five years since he’d entered the ranks of professional hockey. Preparing for his fourth season with his hometown Leafs, Andrew intends to enjoy his summer down time—hang out with friends and family, keep in shape, and erase all memories from that disastrous two-year joke of a relationship that imploded in May.

Not that he has any plans to revisit his first few years in the pros. He’d eagerly sampled the attentions of a never-ending line of women who wanted nothing more than to spend one night with a professional athlete. Believe it or not, one-night-stands with absolutely gorgeous women whose names he never bothered to remember became tedious. And that steady relationship he tried for two years? Finding your so-called girlfriend in your own bed with some other guy certainly opened his eyes.

Maybe it’s time to cut the fun and games and concentrate on things that are important—Win the Stanley Cup, give his brother any support he needs as he starts his Internship Rotations, help his Mom and Dad around their house. Act like a grown-up at twenty-four?

He’s not particularly looking, but if he were to meet someone interesting…well, he’ll just see where things go.

Neither Caryn nor Andrew expected their two very different worlds to collide on a beautiful June day…

Synopsis
My name is Brooke Barker…
And I’m a freaking disaster.

No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.

Not to mention I’m completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.

The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.

The second problem? He’s my best friend.

My shut-up-and-put-harry-potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampon, kinda best friend.

And that’s all he can be, right?

Right.

Being Brooke is a standalone romantic comedy. Hilarious, super-sexy, and possibly highly inappropriate at times, this is the perfect feel-good read!

If Holly Woods survives this.

Being Brooke Teaser 1

Excerpt
Cain’s phone begins to buzz on the table. The screen lights up, and the short name on the screen makes me have to fight a frown.

I know it’s Nina. It always is. It’s like she has a Brooke-dar. She can sense whenever Cain and I are alone and hanging out.

My heart sinks, slowly but heavily, and I school my expression into one of not caring. I refuse to look away from the TV now.

Cain hands me his pizza box, which I take, begrudgingly, then he leans forward and grabs his phone. He waits for the buzzing to stop, then unlocks it and turns it off vibrate.

Then? Then he shoves it under the table, screen down.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

I gape at him. I can’t help it.

A piece of pepperoni drops off the slice of pizza in my hand—the same one that’s frozen halfway to my mouth as I stare at him in total disbelief. Did he really just do it?

“What?” Cain shrugs and takes his box back, grabbing a piece of half-eaten, meaty pizza and shoving the end in his mouth. The crust crunches as he bites down.

I swallow and glance at the coffee table. “I don’t think you’ve ever not taken a call from her.” I can’t help the derogatory way I say ’her’. It’s not intentional—honest. It’s ingrained in me to be vicious to other women. I think it’s a female thing. Self-preservation and all that.

“I don’t think I ever haven’t either.” Cain tilts his head to the side and meets my gaze, a suspicious glint in his green eyes. “But the point is, we haven’t done this in weeks, and I’m having too much fun to leave. Besides, we have all this junk food. If I don’t help you eat it, you’ll eat it all, then it’ll be my fault when your pants don’t fit.”

Oh my god.

“Does she know you’re here?” I smirk slyly and raise my eyebrows.

He shifts uncomfortably. With a cough, he puts his pizza down and grabs his beer bottle to swig from it.

Oh. My. Shitty. Life.

“She doesn’t, does she?” I sit up straight, throwing my half-slice back into my box and shoving his shoulder. “Cain!”

“No,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his ear. “She doesn’t know.”

I laugh. I can’t help it. It’s totally immature of me to delight in the fact he hasn’t told the Prissy Princess where is he and he’s ignoring her calls, but I do. It’s hilarious.

And, okay. I’m smug. Totally smug. There’s only one reason he hasn’t told her, and that’s because she hates me too.

Bitchy Best Friend Mission: Level Up!

“And tell me.” I snicker, just about holding back the volcano of laughter threatening to erupt. “Where does Nina think you are?”

“She thinks I’m at Mom’s.” He looks at me, his lips flattening into a thin line. “Stop laughing, B. No, don’t shake your damn head. I fucking mean it. She’s a little insecure over my friendship with you and Carly, that’s all. Sometimes it’s easier to just tell a… little white lie.”

“A little white lie? She thinks you’re at your mom’s!” I laugh harder and wipe at my eyes because they feel a little too wet.

“I just want the best of both worlds right now, all right?”

“What is the best of both worlds? Pizza with me and blow jobs from her?”

“She chooses not to eat gluten. Until she finds a gluten-free recipe she likes, I can’t eat pizza when she’s around.”

Which is a lot.

I raise my eyebrows again. “Your girlfriend won’t eat gluten but she’ll happily put your dick in her mouth?”

“Brooke. Don’t be a bitch.” He chucks a piece of chicken from his pizza at me, his eyes narrowing.

I’m dying. I think this is it—this is how I die, laughing at Cain’s lame excuses for lying to his girlfriend about spending time with me.

“Oh my fuck. This is hilarious. Seriously. Someone call Comedy Central.”

“Brooke.” He says my name again, this time quieter.

I stop laughing. Just about.

“I’m sorry. I just think it’s funny. You want me to be nice to her but you lie to her about spending time with me.” I shrug a shoulder and peel a piece of pepperoni off my pizza. I’m not even that hungry anymore.

He sighs, putting the top down on his box, and sits back. “She thinks there’s something going on between us.”

I laugh even harder because I might cry if I don’t.

Hi, breaking heart. Grab the tissues, yo.

There’s an awkward silence hanging between us now. It’s not the first time someone has thought that, but given that the more time I spend with Cain, the more I seem to fall for him, it’s awkward. Especially since he’s lying to her just to hang out with me.

I clear my throat and look up at him. “That’s ridiculous. You’re my best friend. Like anything would ever happen between us. I can’t put up with your shit taste in music, for a start.”

“Exactly,” he replies in a quieter voice, scratching behind his ear again. “It’s fucking stupid. I can’t stand your taste in music either. Who the fuck likes Justin Bieber?”

“People who think Kanye West should retire.”

Excerpt #2
He sat, shifting as though he couldn’t get comfortable. “I gave you a hard time last night. Acted like a real prick. Just wanted to tell you I’m sorry.”

“Okay…” She was afraid to get too excited. Why the sudden change in his feelings?

“And not just about that,” he went on. “I want to apologize for everything. For the way I acted when Gabi died. The shit I said. Blaming you…it was wrong.”

Wow. This was monumental. Alyx didn’t even know where to begin. “Thank you,” she said at last, though that didn’t even begin to cover it. But something was off. She should be overcome with relief, lighter than air. She wasn’t, though. There was still too much she didn’t understand.

“You said it was my fault…” Her voice was a thread of sound.

He looked away. “Yeah. I know. It was fucked-up.”

“I still don’t get it. Why did you blame me? I loved her as much—” She was about to say As much as you did, but stopped herself. She’d loved Gabi as her closest friend, but it wasn’t the same as the feelings Cris had. “I loved her too.”

He gazed out at her mother’s garden. “I know. It was stupid of me. I wasn’t thinking straight. I mean, you couldn’t have known what would happen when you called her that night.”

“Called her—” Alyx stopped, her words breaking off in midair. What call? Even though Cris’s explanation made no sense, something warned her not to probe further. A weird tingle passed through her, urging her to listen rather than speak.

“You did the smart thing, calling her for a ride home. Nothing strange about asking a friend to help you out when you’re not safe to drive.” His gaze traveled over the herb garden, the clusters of rosemary, mint, and basil. At her mother’s roses, just starting to bloom. “You couldn’t have known she’d be killed on the way.” Then he looked at her. “Right?”

Something in his eyes belied his words. A chill that seemed to accuse her, in spite of everything he’d said.

She swallowed, her throat as dry as chalk. “Right.”

He spoke again, but she couldn’t make it out. His lips moved, but all Alyx could hear was a buzzing in her ears, as though a hive of bees were nesting in her head.

What had he said? That she had called Gabi the night her friend was killed?

It made sense now. Cris blamed her for getting drunk, for calling Gabi.

But it wasn’t true. She hadn’t called Gabi the night of the accident. Hadn’t spoken to her, in fact, for days. Everything Cris said, everything he believed, was untrue.

Gabi had lied. But why?

Excerpt
Connell tried to drag the Elemental toward him, but she didn’t budge. Instead, she glanced at his hands. For a second, he could have sworn amusement flashed across her face. Then she was gone—wind whipping him in the face so hard it stung.

Fuck!

He turned around in a circle, scanning the air and the land around him. God, he couldn’t lose her now. He needed to get his wolf back. Not having the extra other in his head was tearing him apart. The empty space inside him was like a crawling emptiness. Sometimes, it was in his head. Other times, it was in his heart.

I can’t believe I lost her.

He’d had her in his hands, and then poof. At this point, she could be anywhere. A strangled sigh escaped from deep in his chest. It sounded pathetic and broken, even to him. He checked the house to make sure she wasn’t there, and then he walked back out to his rented jeep. Damn it, he was going to have to start tracking her all over again.

“Hey, what’s your name?”

Stunned, Connell tripped. Pivoting on his heel, he turned to see the sprite standing on a huge boulder in the distance. He was so damn surprised to see her that he lost his tongue. He just stared at her like an idiot.

Apparently, she agreed. “I can’t keep calling you tall, dark, and stupid, now can I? Whatisyourname?” she repeated, over-enunciating each word.

He was too relieved to get upset over the fact she was talking to him as if he were slow. “Connell Maitland.”

The imp turned away and started addressing the air around her, “He says he’s one of the Maitlands. American accent, so one of the Colorado ones. Yeah. It’s severe. I haven’t seen anything like it. It’s like his wolf was torn out of him somehow. He thinks we did it. Hold on a sec—” Her words broke off as Connell started to run toward her.

A gust of strong air slammed him down to the ground before he cleared the rise.

“Stay there,” the sprite ordered in a glacial tone.

Frigid as the wind, he thought as he regained his footing. Hell, everything about her should be ice-cold. Instead, he felt like he was burning up around her. It was disconcerting. So was the hard edge in her voice. That kind of steel shouldn’t be coming out of such a tiny, doll-like girl.

“Yeah, yeah. It’s fine. He’s on a leash,” the imp said a touch smugly.

Connell growled low in his throat. At least that hadn’t changed. Prey the world over would still react instinctively in fear at that sound.

But the imp didn’t even blink. And she had heard him. She just hadn’t cared. She kept on talking like some gossipy housewife on the phone. Except she was addressing no one.

“Who the bloody hell are you talking to? Invisible fairies? Can anyone even hear you?” he asked incredulously.

The imp bustled here and there. He watched her without a word, trying not to be annoyed at how non-threatening she found him. No one else he’d ever come up against had turned their back to him. Of course, none of them could disappear into thin air either.

Minutes passed, and a new smell began to fill the air. “Are you making cookies?”

Connell had spent months tracking the imp, and now she was playing Suzy Homemaker, baking cookies. Was this really happening? Everything felt surreal. He watched her bend down to open the oven, half-expecting her to start glowing or sparkling like a cartoon fairy.

“Chocolate chip and walnut,” she replied, setting down a baking sheet.

A dozen large, gooey cookies were on the rectangular sheet. Connell’s stomach rumbled audibly, but he ignored it.

The imp lifted a brow. “Do you want one?”

“No,” he said curtly.

His stomach growled again, and he closed his eyes in irritation. He’d had a huge lunch at a nearby inn, but he was used to four large meals a day, at least half of which he ate communally with the pack.

Connell took a deep breath. “I don’t believe you didn’t do this. Or one of the others like you. If it had been a witch, I’d be dead right now.”

The imp cocked her head and stared at him with that same unnerving calm from before. He shifted, suddenly more warm than angry.

Why did she have to be so damn cute? He didn’t even like Asian girls. He went for tall, busty blondes like Riley.

Don’t waste time thinking about that mess, he reminded himself.

“I don’t think that’s necessarily true,” she said, still studying him. “And I can’t tell what’s wrong with you yet, so I’m not ruling anything out. Witches included. How long have you been this way? Start at the beginning.”

Her tone made it a command. He wanted to shake his head in disbelief. The imp looked like jailbait, and yet she issued orders like a general. She had the innate authority to back it up too. Connell was an alpha, but he wanted to bow down to her. It was unnerving.

“How old are you?” he asked suspiciously.

“How old do I look?”

The answer was so cheeky that he wanted to grab her. But putting his hands on her was a bad idea.

When he didn’t answer, she dropped her shoulders. “Start at the beginning,” she repeated, a trace more gently this time.

Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair until it stood on end. Could he trust her? Did he even have a choice?

“If you want me to help, you have to explain what happened to you.”

He stepped to her aggressively, eyes flashing green fire. “I didn’t come all this way to chat, little girl. I came here so you could fix me. Even if you didn’t do it—if an Elemental didn’t strip my wolf away—you can put it back. You have that power. It’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Connell expected her to warily back away. But the imp stood her ground and met his stare. Her eyes were kinder than he expected, filled with sympathy.

He hated it.

“That isn’t what we do. Elementals aren’t healers. We’re soldiers. I can’t fix you, not yet. I don’t even know how this happened. You have to tell me. And it’s Logan, not little girl.”

Connell blinked. “Like the airport?”

Logan scowled at him. And like everything else about her, it was adorable. Shit. He was not attracted to cute.

“Like the Wolverine,” Logan snapped with a ferocious frown on her face.

Still adorable.

Connell flared his nostrils. What the hell was he supposed to do now? There was no trace of a lie in her scent. And despite losing his wolf, he could still tell when others lied to him. Like Riley. And he knew from first-hand experience what a skilled liar she was.

Logan had to be telling the truth. And if she wasn’t, he didn’t have another alternative. The witches his pack contacted after his attack hadn’t known how to help him. The healer his father had found had taken one look and said it was beyond his skill. He had nothing to lose by telling Logan what little he knew.

“I don’t know how it happened. Whatever it was, I was out for most of it,” he said, reaching for the quiche at the end of the counter. It was ham and tomato, conveniently cut into quarters. He inhaled one piece and reached for another.

“Help yourself, why don’t you?” she said in a neutral tone as he bit into the second piece.

“I’ve tracked you through four different countries. I’m hungry,” he growled.

The thick wedge was good. So was the dirty look Logan was giving him. It made him feel alive again.

Logan took in the flirtatious grin on Connell’s face and felt her face get even redder than it already was. None of Michel’s most practiced moves had ever turned her on as much as one smile from this man. He was carnal sin on two legs.

Except he prefers four.

Narrowing her eyes, she reminded herself how much she disliked Weres. She schooled her expression. “Something tells me you’re used to handling yourself just fine,” she said with a meaningful glance at his groin region.

Her voice was sweeter than sugar, but her insinuation didn’t put him off. Instead, his smile deepened, and she was suddenly in danger of not being able to catch her breath.

“Are you sure?” he teased.

“Bathroom’s up the stairs, first door on the right.” She pointed, all business.

Connell backed away with a long, lingering look. He was wearing that panty-melting smile when he turned and headed up the stairs.

“Don’t forget to check the soles of your feet too,” she called after him, her voice perfectly even. Once he was gone, Logan let out a long, hard breath. Damn, that man was hot.

She wished she had taken Michel up on one his many offers to take her to bed. Recent sex might have acted as a shield against Connell’s supercharged pheromones.

Well, you didn’t sleep with him, and there’s no point regretting that now.

Sighing, she dematerialized, heading outside for a quick trip to the air currents. It was better than a cold shower any day.

Connell watched the wind whip around the cabin as it knocked napkins off the table to the floor with considerable force. He felt like shit for teasing Logan now, but he hadn’t expected her discomfort to escalate into a full-blown panic attack.

Feeling helpless, he stood, his arms out in front of him, as the wind continued to circle in the small cabin. His concern for the sprite turned into worry for himself and the pilot. If Logan didn’t calm down, she was going to depressurize the cabin and possibly take down the jet.

The wind whipped past his head. Closing his eyes, he instinctively reached out. Not bothering to analyze the stupidity of his move, he grabbed at the gust of wind. Suddenly, Logan was there, in his arms.

He didn’t know which one of them was more surprised as he looked down at her. For a moment, they simply stared at each other—his eyes wide and her rosy lips an O of surprise.

“How did you—”

He cut her off by doing what he’d wanted to do from the first moment he’d seen her dancing at that club.

He kissed her. Hard.

His lips crashed down on hers, taking her mouth aggressively, possessing it with a growl that came from deep inside him. Logan was too disoriented to shove him away. Instead, she lay limp in his arms, her mouth soft and pliant under his.

Connell took advantage of his imp’s confusion to plunge his tongue into her mouth. The world narrowed down to that touch—his tongue stroking hers. She was like nothing he’d ever tasted, and he was two seconds from tearing their clothes off when she pushed him away. He didn’t make it easy; he didn’t want to let her go. But it soon became clear that he didn’t have a choice.

He landed on the leather couch with an oomph as most of the air in his lungs was expelled by the force. That much strength in such a little body was unnatural. It was like being moved by a forklift.

Logan was standing over him with a confused expression on her face. “Huh,” she said.

Connell sat up straight. “What does that mean?” he asked.

He wanted to grab her again, but the dent he just made in the couch was a good reminder not to do it again without permission. But later…she would beg for his touch. He’d make sure of it. In the meantime, he waited with uncharacteristic patience for her to answer.

“It means huh,” she replied, sitting on the sofa opposite the one he was in and cocking her head at him.

She was watching him as if he were a curious specimen of insect. Other than mild interest, there was no reaction to what had happened. And annoyingly, it also didn’t appear as if she wanted to do it again.

Okay,” he rumbled as she reached up for the nearest bottle on the bar next to her. He frowned. “What are you doing?”

“I think I need that drink after all,” she said, pouring a large measure of his favorite twenty-year-old scotch into a glass.

“Fine. Just don’t get drunk,” he muttered. “You don’t even look old enough to be drinking. I feel like I’m contributing to the delinquency of a minor.”

Logan snorted at that, but she didn’t respond. He took that as a silent confirmation that she was older than she looked.

Meanwhile, Logan downed scotch that was older than she was.
