Synopsis
A gripping novel of romantic suspense from USA Today bestselling author Karen Fenech.

FBI Special Agent Paige Carson hoped she’d be able to start a new life in small-town South Carolina. But when a senator’s sister is murdered and a blank postcard is left next to the body, Paige realizes that a killer from her past has found her–and is sending her a very personal message.

From the moment he hired her, FBI Special Agent in Charge Sam McKade knew Paige was hiding something. Prompted by this recent threat, she finally opens up: one year ago, she caught the eye of suspected serial killer Todd Thames. Now he’s come back to pull her into his game, whether she wants to play or not.

As the danger increases, Paige and Sam give in to their growing attraction, and he vows to protect her no matter the cost. But the murderer will stop at nothing to get to his intended prey, and the strong arm of the law–and the shelter of her new love–may not be enough to save her.

Excerpt
When they were alone again, Sam looked to Paige. The few lines around his eyes and mouth pulled tighter. “I saw you leave last night.”

Paige’s insides tightened. “I told you I was leaving.”

He watched her, never taking his eyes from hers. “You told me you were going into the house to get something you’d dropped. I went after you, but you didn’t go into the house. You were in the back, in the train yard. I thought you might have seen someone else suspicious out there and went after you, but you got into a cab.”

Paige knew better than to volunteer information. “Okay.”

“You’re wary. Jumpy.” Sam eyed her. “Something is going on with you. Tell me what that is.”

Paige’s breath caught. She had to work to take another breath. “There’s nothing going on with me.”

His voice even, he asked, “Why did you take a cab home last night instead of going with the squad?”

Sam didn’t break eye contact. Paige believed she was getting a glimpse of what he was like in an interrogation, how skilled he was, how powerful. Despite the chill in the diner, Paige was sweating. “Harry mentioned going out for wings and beer. I needed to go back to the office to get the car, and”—she shrugged, affecting indifference—“more than that, I didn’t want to cramp their style if they were looking to hook up at a bar.”

Sam leaned across the table toward her. His eyes showed frustration, but along with it Paige saw tenderness. “You can trust me.”

That tenderness was almost her undoing. She needed to give him something to throw him off the scent, but just now she felt the full weight of her situation and couldn’t come up with words that would deter him. He wanted her to trust him. She was so tired of not being able to trust anyone. He couldn’t possibly know how much she wished she could trust him. Her throat grew so tight it burned. She forced out her next words. “I’ve learned that I can’t trust anyone.”

Synopsis
Tempting Tristan is a stand-alone M/M romance featuring two sexy, lovable alpha heroes.

TRISTAN AND ALEX

Fresh off the heels of yet another bad relationship, Tristan Brewer is taking a break from men to try to figure out where he keeps going wrong. He knows his biggest fault—he leads with his heart, not his head—and that’s never going to change. But after several introspective weeks, he’s beginning to get a handle on things. That is, until badass heartthrob Alex Wells walks into his bar…

Alex has spent eight years in the army, months in a hospital bed, and far too long hiding his sexual identity. He’s guilt-ridden, damaged, pissed off, and up for a Silver Star for the incident that nearly cost him his life—and kept him from his grandmother’s funeral. But all he wants to do is live the life he’s always dreamed of and forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept.

The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together, the hotter the flames burn. But the closer they become, the more Alex’s walls go up, and when the two walk onto a military base, Tristan finds out Alex’s physical scars aren’t the ones that run the deepest.

Excerpt
She rolls her pretty green eyes. “No, Tristan. Because the hottest man on the planet just parked his motorcycle and he’s heading in here. All of my female customers are drooling, and I’m sure you’ll see a flock of them coming in any minute now. Meanwhile, I’m stuck outside and soon I’ll have a pier full of empty tables.” She grabs a handful of napkins and waves them at me with a smirk. “Drool rags.”

“Dibs,” Charley says as she whips up a cocktail.

I laugh and hold my hands up. “I’m on a hiatus from all things male, so be my guest.” My ex, Ian, is a self-absorbed ass, and I was an idiot for letting him treat me like shit. Which is why I’m taking a break from men—even if it kills me. It’s been weeks since we broke up and I moved into my buddy Wyatt’s house. Wyatt and his twin sister, Delilah, own the Taproom. They inherited it when their parents were killed in a car accident a little more than a year ago.

“I’m sure he’s straight anyway,” Livi says. “The guy swaggers like a stud.”

“Hey, gay guys can swagger like studs,” I tease.

“I know that.” Livi peers out the pass-through window to the outside seating area and tosses her blond hair over her shoulder. “You’ll see what I mean. He’s a total badass.”

I tend to my customers as the girls discuss the badass hot guy, and when the front door opens, I can’t help but let my eyes drift over. Livi and Charley fall silent, ogling what truly might be the hottest guy on the planet. Linebacker shoulders fill the doorframe. The godlike creature is carrying a shiny black motorcycle helmet in one very large hand. His white T-shirt is stretched so tight across his chest I can see every ripple of his shredded abs, and his deliciously defined biceps are seriously struggling to be set free from his short sleeves.Tear, baby, tear.

He steps inside and runs a hand through his dirty-blond hair. Deep-set, brooding eyes slide over the customers sitting at the bar, sweep over Charley and Livi, and finally land on me. Charley whimpers, and Livi makes a sound in the back of her throat, both mimicking what I’m feeling, though my mouth is too dry to make a sound.

In SEASIDE LOVERS…
After months of long-distance communication, actress Parker Collins and artist Grayson Lacroux finally plan to reconnect in the seaside town of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. But Parker never shows, and weeks pass without a word, leaving Grayson to believe he’s misinterpreted their budding relationship.

Parker has been running on autopilot ever since she lost her friend, mentor, and the only family she’s ever known, Bert Stein. Armed with junk food, tequila, and her big, lovable dog, she’s prepared to hole up and mourn–and determined to mend a fence Bert had never been able to with his estranged and bitter brother. But Parker didn’t count on the sinfully hot artist she’s been fantasizing about for nearly a year walking in on her grief-induced drunken night.

When Grayson stumbles across Parker, he has no idea what to make of the gorgeous blonde who blew him off despite the heat sizzling between them. But that doesn’t stop him from feeling protective of the woman who’s consumed his thoughts for months, and when he learns of Parker’s plans to confront an angry old man, he refuses to leave her side. As Parker’s past unfolds, they’re led on an unexpected journey of discovery. Their connection deepens, and late-night fantasies become passionate realities, until good intentions spark painful secrets, threatening the love they’ve found.

Excerpt
“Trust me?” Grayson asked.

“Trust a guy who hauled me over his shoulder and kidnapped me?” She looked toward the bar.

“Yeah, trust that guy.”

“I do trust you.” She poked him in his chest. “But if I end up on the front of some rag magazine, I’m hiding out in your basement. With Christmas, chocolate, and a boatload of horror movies that you have to watch with me.”

“Sweetheart, if you move into my house, you won’t be watching movies or hiding out in the basement. You’ll be lucky if you make it out of the bedroom. In fact”—he slid his hand to the nape of her neck, causing her eyes to glaze over with desire—“maybe I should take a few of those pictures and make that happen.” He’d taken a chance, saying something so brazen and holding her like this in the cab of his truck, but he couldn’t hold back.

Synopsis
There’s something totally inconvenient about falling for your best friend’s brother. Especially when he’s turned into a pompous, arrogant, albeit annoyingly sexy a-hole that you’d like to punch or kiss to death at any given moment.

After a stupid favor that blurred the lines from friends to lovers the summer she turned eighteen, Jazz Frazer accidentally lost her heart to Joey Butler. For three years they’ve pretended there’s nothing between them anymore. Jazz is finally ready to move on with the rest of her life. She’s determined that experiences and relationships will be fun, casual and easy. After all, she learned the hard way that men just don’t stick around anyway. But when her best friend gets herself into a relationship with a celebrity, Jazz has to do the one thing she never thought she’d do, call Joey and ask for help.

Repeatedly thrown together, Jazz tries everything she can to protect her heart and not fall back in love with Joey. But when Joey finally admits that Jazz is the one he’s always wanted, all bets are off.

This is a full length, standalone contemporary, friends to lovers and second chance romance. It is a spin off from the Eversea series and may therefore contain minor spoilers. This book is recommended for ages 17+ due to strong language and sexual situations.

Excerpt #1:
I can see the struggle on his face. He’s made such a big deal about my sunburn, he’d literally be defying his Hippocratic Oath by denying me relief.

I actually find myself taking perverse pleasure from his discomfort. Why not make this fun? “Fine.” Taking a deep breath, I lock eyes with him and slip my dress strap down on one side. His eyes track the movement. Then I reach for the other and I see his jaw harden.

I sigh and wink at him. “Let’s see what you’ve got, Doctor Butler.”

He meets my eyes, one eyebrow arched, his mouth twisting. “You did always make me want to play doctor, Miss Fraser.”

It takes nano seconds for his words to register and scalding shock to flood my system, and then eons for the surprise to ebb and release my tongue. By that time, Joey has cleared his throat and rolled up his sleeves. He squeezes lidocaine into the palm of one of his strong hands, then uses the other to swing a chair out to sit on.

I swallow some saliva back into my mouth. I didn’t expect him to flirt back.

“Shift around,” he says gently. “So your back is facing me.”

I do as he asks. The sound of the zipper on my sundress going down seems to reverberate around the room like a Boeing engine.

“I don’t think I’ve ever heard you speechless before.” He chuckles, warm and husky just as the cold cream hits my skin. “Is there anywhere else that hurts?” he says into my ear.

Is he serious right now?

The iciness of the cream steals my outrage, and I inhale with the uncomfortable sensation. Then I moan in relief.

Finally, annoyance surges in the wake of his suggestive comments. What the hell is he playing at? Did he seriously just say that? I almost want him to repeat it. Actually why the hell not? “Did you just say I make you want to play doctor? Like sexy doctor? Like, ‘let me examine you’ suggestive weirdness?”

“Shut it.”

“No. I won’t.”

“I preferred you speechless.” He swipes more cooling lotion on my back.

“So let me get this straight. You don’t want me, but the second you hear I’m seeing someone else you start coming on to me?” I keep my back to him though I know he’s done. And feel, rather than hear, his body shift away from me. My zipper slowly rises. He’s quiet.

I scoot around on the seat until I face him, my bare knees knock against his rough jeans. “Coz that’s what you just did, isn’t it?” His eyes are cloudy and brooding and locked on my mouth. His skin is flushed. Why does he have to be so Goddamn sexy?

“I never said I didn’t want you.”

Holy—

I swallow. Speechless for the second time in the space of five minutes.

“But,” he adds. “This—us—just wasn’t advisable.”

I process his words.

What a complete jackass.

Abruptly I stand up in front of him, my dress straps are still down, it makes me feel half undressed. I’m practically standing between his legs I’m so close.

Looking down at him, I narrow my eyes. “Actually, Doctor. I do hurt somewhere else.”

He winces almost imperceptibly. His eyes flick to my chest.

My heart? Is that what he thinks?

Oh, no fucking way.

“Actually …” I lean down and grab his hand and slide it up my dress and between my legs.

Joey expels a shocked breath.

“It hurts right here.”

His blue eyes flare dark as the surprise and arousal stuns him.

I press his hand against my underwear. “Feel like soothing this ache?” I hiss.

Synopsis
With the odd disappearance of her parents, Gussie Gibson has lived her entire life with her granny on a peaceful pecan orchard, owned by the meanest man in all of Georgia—Mr. J.P. Combs.

Granny teaches Gussie many valuable life lessons as a black woman growing up in the still-segregated south. Mr. Combs is an evil underhanded banker who takes liberties beyond his privilege. When Granny dies, Combs informs Gussie she owes him back rent—but he wants much more than money for payment—and more than Gussie can live with.

After defending herself against his sexual advances, Gussie flees to escape certain vigilante justice when she meets a charming, handsome stranger, Sam Johnson, who is just returning from World War II.

Gussie and Sam’s friendship is short-lived when Mr. Combs hunts her down and drags her back to Green Ridge, driven by his craving for revenge and a grudge too deep to comprehend. Gussie fights to return to Sam and his love, but it seems, no matter where she runs, danger follows close on her heels, in the troubled South where cruelty disfigures the human spirit and love is a dim beacon of hope.

Excerpt

1945

No one on this earth deserves to die more than Mister J.P. Combs.

Mister Combs is the vice president of the Green Ridge Union Bank, and the nastiest man in all of Georgia. He robs from the old, the poor, the sick, and the weak. Granny and I been working for the Combs family for as long as I can remember. Granny taught me how to wash their silver and fancy china so it comes out shiny, how to iron the tablecloths, and how to fold the napkins just how Missus Combs likes it done.

Missus is a nice woman. She treats Granny and me right. On Sunday she takes her coffee into the kitchen to visit with us after church. But not Mister. He hates colored folks. He says we don’t know our place.

Mister never takes his eyes off of me. It’s like he’s making sure I don’t stop to take an extra breath while I’m working, so he’s getting his money’s worth. Granny and I tend the Combs’ house for just sixty-nine cents an hour. That’s a lot less than most maids. The trouble is that Granny is old, tired and slow. Her feet don’t work so good no more. We got to take what work we can get.

Mister comes home early every Friday. He likes to lean against the stove while he peels an apple with a buck knife. He chews the pieces and leers at me while I polish the silver. I’d love to stuff that apple in his mouth and stick him in the stove. I gotta learn to control my temper, sometimes it’s hard, especially when Mister’s at me. Don’t know from one day to the next what’s gonna happen. Somedays I wish I could explode and blow up the whole world.

Granny knows I got a bad temper. It worries her. She takes me into Mister’s parlor and stares at me with her brow all crinkled up. “Gussie child, you keep outta Mister’s way,” she whispers. “I don’t like how he looks at you.” Granny shakes her head in disgust. “You’re only sixteen years old. Don’t you let him get close. You stay by me—you hear?”

I can’t look at Granny. My cheeks burn with shame.

Granny takes hold of my hands. “You listening to me, child?”

I nod. She leans in real close, her bottom lip quivers in a two-tone brown. I stare at the wrinkles around her mouth, and at her bottom row of teeth all worn down. I worry about how much longer she’ll live. I don’t want her to leave me. “I see the way he’s been looking at you,” Granny says. “Like you the hottest thing on the lunch menu.” Granny lifts my chin so that our eyes meet. “If he comes round, and you alone—you tell him you got chores to do.” Granny squeezes my hands tighter. “His heart ain’t nothing but a thumpin’ gizzard. He’ll hurt you if he has a chance. You stay away from him. You understand me, child?”

I nod again. “Yes, Ma’am.”

The lines around Granny’s eyes soften. She cradles my head in her knobby hands. “You the only thing I got in this world, Gussie. I done lost my boy. I don’t plan on losing you too.”

My lips tremble. “I know Granny, I’ll be careful.” I cross my heart. “I promise.”

She hugs me round the waist, but I don’t hug her back too hard. She’s so frail, I worry that she’ll break. I press my face into her chest. Her heart pounds against my ear and I feel her shaking. All this worry isn’t good for her old body. I don’t want to let go of her. I bury my head into her shirt collar. She smells like shea butter and sweet ginger. Granny runs her hand over my head. Her fingers untangle the curls in my hair, the ones she makes with the pressing comb heated on the stove every morning. Granny pulls away from me and sits down. She never sits at Mister’s house. She looks so tired.

“Granny, you okay?”

She closes her eyes for a moment, placing a hand on her chest. “Take me home, child.”

I help her up, and hold tight to her thin hand as she walks unsteady beside me. My heart twists over Granny working so hard at her age. How she worries over me.

We head outside and make our way down the path through the pecan grove. The path is uneven and it’s hard for Granny to walk. Her toes are twisted like tree roots with arthritis. I wish I could carry her home so her feet don’t have to hurt. She holds onto my arm as I help her up the front steps of the shack we rent from Mister.

We go inside but Granny won’t rest. She puts supper on the stove, and waves me away when I try to help. She lowers herself onto her rocking chair while the beans boil on the back burner. Granny releases a heavy sigh, closes her eyes and stops rocking. I touch her hand and she don’t move. I can’t breathe. My soul dissolves into darkness. I know she’s gone but I can’t face it. I run to Mister’s house. Missus lets me use their telephone and I call for help.

Half an hour later, Granny’s church ladies come and take her away while my heart rips into pieces. I sit in the dark staring at her empty chair, at her shoes, at the knitting needles sticking in the ball of yarn. I close my eyes willing it all to be gone, for the day to start over with Granny alive. I wish life could be like a chalk board where you can erase the bad parts and start over. Hours pass with nothing but the ticking of the clock. I look out the window surprised to see the world still going on even though Granny isn’t.

After the funeral, I lay up in the bed and pray that God kills me so I can be with my Granny—the only mother I’ve ever known—the only person I ever loved. I don’t sleep. I don’t eat. I don’t go to work. I just don’t care about living anymore. When Granny died, something came apart and broke inside me. Fell off a shelf and shattered to the floor. And I just can’t put all the pieces back together.

A week passes and Mister comes looking for me. He’s mad that I haven’t been to work. He yells his fool head off, saying I gotta pay the rent or get out. I don’t got no money and nowhere to go. I don’t know why God don’t come down and take me to Granny. What kind of a life do I have to look forward to anyhow. I don’t want to be stuck in some white man’s kitchen the rest of my life.

Mister comes back the next day, but I already got my bags packed. He looks at me and frowns. “Where you think you’re going?”

I just shrug.

“You come on home with me. You can have a room in exchange for looking after the house. You got that, girl?”

I nod my head. I don’t know what else to do.

I don’t got no choice.

A lonesome sparrow hatches inside of me, flies out my mouth, and pulls out my insides as it leaves, taking all my happiness with it.

Excerpt #1
Xavier turned his back to me, disappearing among the students walking in all directions. I gulped down the lump in my throat, and headed toward my locker on autopilot. I walked straight down the middle of the hallway, students veering around me one way or the other. Each step was like the last, until gravel crunched beneath my boot.

I stopped walking and glanced down. Instead of tile, I saw charred black gravel. When I looked back up, I was standing in a virtual field of the stuff. There was nothing else around me except some hills the same color. The sky was gray and wind blew strands of my hair across my face. When I brushed the hair away, I saw something glint among the rocks near my feet.

I bent down, brushing the blackened dirt away, revealing something silver. I grazed the edge of it with my fingertips, then plunged my fingers into the gravel, pulling out the object. I stood again, my hand wrapped around it. When I glanced up, I was back in the hallway, students parting around me.

Another memory. Each one seemed to get more vivid and real.

But then I felt something cold in my hand.

I slowly unwrapped my fingers, and charcoaled dirt sifted between them onto the floor, leaving behind a 3-D silver serpentine object the size of my palm. My hand shook. That wasn’t just a memory. I’d physically done something. Or, more to the point, I’d gone somewhere. And I was pretty sure it wasn’t on Earth.

I covered the object in my hand again. I took a step forward, totally ready to skip class to go have a meltdown in the bathroom, when someone grabbed my arm, dragging me across the hall into an empty classroom. I wrenched away, facing the guy from detention–who didn’t exist in school records.

“What are you doing?” he hissed. “Didn’t you grow up like this? I thought you’d know better.”

However, her definition of “normal” unravels when a killer with multiple powers and an agenda steps into town.

When Rosamund herself becomes a target, she has a choice between playing the killer’s game and saving a few, or getting to the core of the murders and stopping them for good.

Rosamund’s choice will save everyone she cares about–or unleash a new era for herself and her family, shattering whatever hope for going back to normal she had.

About the Author
I’ve always loved stories. From bedtime tales my parents told me about their childhood (over and over again) to the Berenstain Bears, I lived to hear the next story.

So I guess it’s not surprising that I came up with my own stories and started putting them on paper as soon as I could write. I remember carting notebooks with me to school and working whenever I had the chance (some things don’t really change). Later, I branched out into poetry and plays and experimental works, but I always came back to stories.

Weirdly enough, even though I loved mysteries and sci-fi/fantasy, I focused on writing literary short stories for several years. But everything changed when I wrote my first novel as a challenge in 2009. Not only was it a novel, but it was also a mystery (actually, it’s what became The Jester’s Apprentice). I was hooked, and over the last few years, novel writing has grown into a full-time pursuit. (According to my sister, I talk waaayyy too much to write short stories.)

Beyond writing, I’m a Massachusetts native with strong ties to the Rhode Island coast, and I love to bake, watch movies, and tackle graphic/web design projects.

Synopsis
After her parents died during her senior year of high school, Alexa Morgan is completely alone in the world—except for her best-friend-turned-boyfriend Devin, identical twins Becca and Jessa, and Sebastian, a mysterious associate of her father’s.

Upon graduation, Alexa wants nothing more than to move on with her life, go to college, and forget all the hard and hurtful things from her tragic past. But when her first love, Ethan, shows up at her graduation—it kicks off a whirlwind of events that threatens the good and stable things she’s worked so hard to achieve.

Ethan and Alexa shared one night of passion before he disappeared, leaving her bewildered and confused. But now he’s back, declaring that he loves her and that the only reason he left was to protect her from his malicious stepmother, Olivia.

In her heart, Alexa knows she loves Devin, but her attraction to Ethan is so strong she can’t help but be drawn in by their shared chemistry.

Meanwhile, the threat of Olivia lurks around the edges, casting a menacing shadow over everything and everyone Alexa loves.

Excerpt
Although it feels like time has completely stopped it most definitely has not. I am completely oblivious to how long Ethan and I have been standing outside my hotel room when we are startled apart by the sound of a very pissed off, deep, familiar voice.

“What the fuck is going on, Lexi?” Devin’s heated voice booms through the open hallway making me cringe and my body turn to stone at the sound. I’m still partially wrapped up in Ethan’s arms but when I finally detangle myself completely out of his hold, I step to the side of him so I can see Devin. I get a pretty good view of him too since he’s standing only a few feet behind Ethan with hate evident in his normally kind eyes. I know shock is all over my face as I stare at Devin as if he’s just a figment of my imagination. Ethan hasn’t moved a muscle. His back is to his enemy yet he chooses to stay facing me. It takes another few seconds before I finally take notice to what Devin is wearing. He has on running shorts and running shoes. His body is glistening with sweat and his face is red as if he was actually outside running in the Miami heat.

What the hell? My emotions are all over the place. Confused, scared, hurt, happy. I swear on my parent’s urns that Devin was just in bed with the twins. How is he standing here like he was actually out for a run and why can’t I find my damned voice to ask that very question? Suddenly I hear the twins’ door to their room open. I turn my attention behind me just as a random guy, who looks like he could be Devin’s fraternal twin brother or doppelganger, exits the twins’ room. My mind automatically fishes for the memory of my conversation with Jesse. Once I replay what he had said privately plus all of the banter with his buddies, I can see how a drunken person could mistake Mr. Random for Devin. The twins’ guest is wearing gray boardshorts and flips flops and steps out carrying his black T-shirt in his hand. He stops when he sees the three of us standing here. I’m sure we’re quite the sight to see. Me, with red watery eyes and airplane stale clothes, Ethan who has not moved but his irritation is quite evident, and Devin who looks as if he is ready to kill Ethan. The stranger who appears to be very much hung over but oozes sexual satisfaction gives us a half smile, says “Hey” to Devin, and inches past the soon-to-be war zone towards the elevator. It’s usually females you see doing the walk of shame but this morning it’s this wonderful guy, this wonderful guy who isn’t Devin. Shit. Devin.

“Answer me, Alexa.” Devin’s voice is seething and it makes me snap my head back around to face him. I glance briefly at Ethan and I see his eyes are screwed shut, jaw tense, the vein in his neck is pulsing, and his fists are clenched at his sides. Well shit. I can’t explain this because I don’t fully understand it all myself. I look back to Devin who is staring at me with so much anger and hurt that it takes my breath away.

Devin takes two steps closer and Ethan’s eyes snap open. Before either one can do anything I step between both of them. I’ve been in this position once before and just like the last time I have no idea what I could or would do if these two decided to throw down. I take another step towards Devin. He just stares down at me waiting for his answer.

My voice is quiet when I finally speak to him. “Devin, I can explain part of this but I can’t explain Ethan being here because I don’t have that answer-yet.”

“Do you think I’m fucking stupid, Lexi?” There is so much pain evident in his voice that my tears start to spill again.

“No, Devin. I don’t think you’re stupid. Can we please go into our room and talk privately?” I know I sound pathetic but that’s probably because I am. I just want to be alone with Devin and figure out this craziness.

Just when I think Devin is going to concede and go into our room with me I feel one of Ethan’s hands settle on my hip and that one tiny gesture sends Devin flying over the proverbial edge. Everything happens so fast that all I feel is my body being shoved out of the way like I’m a ragdoll. I trip over my bags and my head slams against a solid surface and everything goes black.

Excerpt #2
I lose myself to the sound of zipping harmonicas and anthems about bayous, outlaws, and rambling men. The wistful sound reminds me of happier times, despite the pang of sadness it elicits from nudging, less-welcome memories, too. There’s something about classic rock ’n’ roll that makes me feel at home.

I let the music and the amber liquid that once again flows through me dull the pain. It makes me feel lighter as I dance and sing around the fire with Mac and Savannah. And it just so happens that Mac had been right, hair of the dog—a lot of it—was just what I’d needed to perk my wilting mood right back up again. I’m unable to remember the last time I felt this good.

“So is this like a Native American beer dance or something?” Nick asks, and Reilly barks a laugh, clearly amused.

“You’re just jealous you’re not having as much fun,” Savannah drawls.

“Yeah, that’s exactly what it is.” Nick smirks and pulls away from Savannah as she tries tugging him up from his camping chair.

“Come dance with us.” Her voice sounds more like a whine, and I can’t help but laugh at how drunk she is.

“No, no, no,” he says. “I don’t dance, especially not like that.”

Excerpt

It was still dark when we were let out in front of a huge flaming gate. Well, the gate wasn’t actually flaming, but on each side, a gas lantern was lit and with the smudges on my eternally foggy glasses, it made the gate appear ablaze. The shiny black metal not only reflected the flames, but it seemed to make the whole gate glow in unison with the flickering flames. A very tall brick wall covered in thorny bushes grew even higher than the wall, spreading out of sight in both directions. Major Whoopins punched in a code that opened the gates.

We proceeded down a long black driveway lined with spooky cowering trees offering a creepy welcome. Ahead I saw a building. Even though it was still not quite morning, the sun had started to peak over the horizon giving us just the right light to see. It was a three story maroon colored mansion that looked like it could either be a haunted Victorian house or the fanciest jail ever constructed. I wasn’t sure. It looked like a jail because it had bars on the windows, but it also looked like a fancy house because it had white painted porches on the first two stories. The roof line was very steep and had a couple of chimney stacks. The front right side of the building had a square turret that made it look nice, but frightening. At the top of the turret, I noticed a barless window with lace curtains. As I stared, I felt someone staring back. A woman’s form moved from behind the curtain, and then she was gone.

“Who was that?” I asked, mostly to myself, but I guess Major Whoopins heard me because he answered me saying in a thick, gruff voice, “You’d best mind yo’ own bidness and you gonna git along just fine, ya’ hear?”

“Yes, sir!” I said hoping to stay on his good side. He gave me a reluctant smile but I saw it.

“See that door?” he asked. “You go on and git up there and wait fo’ Mr. Ree.”

Who was Mr. Ree? I wondered.

——————————————————————

Excerpt #1
Kian pulled into a well-worn dirt path off the main road, almost hidden by the thick press of trees on both sides. Both of us bounced in our seats with each pot-hole hit as the headlights danced through the trees. A smart retort was on the tip of my tongue as we broke through the thicket in a small clearing, but when Kian parked the car next to the lake I forced my lips together and swallowed my unspoken remark.

I jumped out of the car instead of waiting on him and his chivalry. Stars dotted the clear night sky and the full moon was exceedingly bright tonight. Both reflected off the blackened still waters of the lake like a mirror. The view was cleansing to my soul. A tear escaped as I marveled at the celestial view. It was magical.

A pair of strong arms snaked around my waist before I felt Kian’s warm body press against mine. He rested his chin on my shoulder and in this moment there was only the two of us.

Existing in harmony with the universe. With no death. No Fears. Just the void above us and the Earth below, with the two of us secured in their warm embrace.

Kian was the first to break the silence. “Happy?”

I twisted in his arms, turning around to where I could see his face. He looked more supernatural than man with the glow of the moon bouncing off his goldenrod hair. “More than I have been in a long time.” I paused and brushed some of his unruly curls out of his eyes. “Thank you.”

Excerpt #1
My heart pounded on the walls of my chest, reverberating through my ears as I neared the door. I began to feel faint. I grabbed the handle with my damp palms and twisted slowly, and then in one quick motion, I whipped the door open.

My heart beat slowed when I found nothing in the storage room but a bunch of boxes. I switched off the light and let the door fall shut with a click.

Once I was back in the dark hallway by myself and ready to leave, the humming noise caught my attention once again. What was that? I followed the sound and pressed my ear against the door that led to the break room.

I could hear muffled voices, but I didn’t see a light under the door. Who was in there? The sound, I realized, was a woman humming a stagnant note.

“We’re here to help you,” Sophie’s voice rang over the humming.

I didn’t take a moment to consider what they were doing behind the door. Once I was sure it was my mother and her friends, I wasn’t scared anymore.

I had only a split second to take in the scene. The three girls sat in a circle around the break table, their hands connected as if in prayer. Candles lit up their faces. Just beyond the table stood another girl with blonde hair and brown eyes. Olivia Owen’s ghost stared back at me with that same look of urgency.

Synopsis
Her life hasn’t gone as planned, but she’s about to realize that sometimes the best things happen when you stop expecting life to be a certain way…

When Rose Morgan put off her college plans to help her mother through a difficult time, she thought it would just be a bump in the road of her journey. She got a job to help pay the bills and started picking up the slack at home. But three years later, her bumpy ride hasn’t smoothed out yet, and Rose feels stuck. She’s working at a job she hates and living with a manipulative mother. She’s tired of feeling like her life has stalled, tired of the resentment and anger building inside her with each passing day.

Then Declan Connelly appears in her life, and even though the hot Irishman is seriously tempting, Rose is determined not to let him in. She’s afraid to suck anyone into her bizarre life, especially someone who seems too charming for his own good. She soon learns there’s more to Declan than his sexy accent and charismatic personality, though. He’s a good man, and he wants Rose in his life, baggage and all. He’s got his own, and he isn’t scared away like she originally feared he would be.

Everything in Rose’s life is changing quickly. It’s finally her time–time to figure out what she wants and what her future holds. Time to get swept off her feet and not fight it. But when her plans might take her away from all the amazing new things in her life, including Declan, Rose has to make a choice. Is she willing to chase her dreams, even if it means letting go of love?

Excerpt
I regain consciousness just in time to panic. I can’t see anything, and suddenly every nerve in my body goes into overdrive. My body shakes as I reach out for my father.

“Dad!” I cry. I know he’s there somewhere. My arms flail as I try to find something to ground me to reality.

A moment later, I feel hands clamp around my wrists. “It’s okay,” I hear my father’s voice say.

“Dad!” I say breathlessly. I blink a few times until the room comes back into focus. The glowing computers outline my father’s silhouette.

“Mila,” my father says as he pulls me close to his belly. He seems so tall because he’s standing and I’m still half sitting, half lying on the table. “Mila, you’re fine. What’s all the fuss about? You’ve done this a million times.”

He’s right. I should be fine. This is the twelfth upgrade I’ve had in the past ten years. Never before had I woken with such an odd sensation. What if this time is different?

Excerpt
Pin searches my eyes as if the truth lies within them, before he pulls up a seat and sits in front of me. “Zola, how old are you?” he asks in a steady voice.

“Sixteen. Why?”

“Two years early,” Pin murmurs to himself.

He gets up and paces across the floor. He glares at me for a moment in a way that worries me. In a few strides, he marches back over to me, grabs me off the bed, and cradles me in his lap. He traces a finger across my healed wounds, as I daze into those immaculate eyes of his.

Halting in his ministrations, he frowns. “Would you like to hear a bedtime story before I leave?” he asks without meeting my gaze.

“I think I am a little too old, but okay.”

He takes a deep breath and begins, “Around sixteen years ago, when I was seven, my father was called to fight in the battle between our people. I didn’t want my father fighting, so he asked to be dismissed from his duties. I guess what I wanted wasn’t what I needed. A few days later, I found my father’s lifeless body on the floor.” His eyes crease slightly at the corners as he continues, “Before my father’s executioners could get to me, the Payohlini Guardians came and adopted me. They prepared me in the ways of the Guardians. On my eighteenth birthday, they assigned me a charge to look after. She was an adorable eleven year older. She had the most magnificent stardust blue eyes.” Pin looks up at me, a pain in his eyes that tugs at me somewhere within my chest. “So I studied her. Her flaws and perfection. Her past and future.

But what I discovered . . .” He trails off.

“So . . . um . . . I guess you are an expert on all things Zola.” I smile, trying to make light of the moment, until the rest of his story slowly sinks in. “But I don’t understand. Why do I need a guardian? I’m no one special. I am just a normal Victian girl.”

“Are you telling me you don’t know anything about yourself? About the war?”

I shake my head.

“Why do you think Rican and I refer to you as Princess?”

I frown. “I thought it was an insult.”

Pin seems to study me for a long time. I trail my fingers over his silky black hair, but he jerks away from me. Taking that as my signal, I remove myself from Pin’s lap and cross back to the bed.

“You’ve had a long day, Princess,” he says gruffly. “Get some rest and I’ll tell you more of the story later.”

“Wait.” I twisted back. “I have one more question.”

“What?”

“Why did they choose you to be my guardian?”

“They gave me the honor of protecting you because I’m the youngest. The Guardians wanted someone who could work well with you. Figured I could. Now get some rest.”

I watch Pin leave with longing in my soul. Why do I feel so much for him when I’ve only known him a day? Why doesn’t he feel the same way?

More importantly, why would the Payohlini assign him to guard me when they are at war with my people?

Synopsis
Zia would give anything to be a typical teenager… again. Heck, she’d settle for being a vampire or smelly werewolf, but a member of the walking dead? The lowliest of all the monsters? No way!

Nothing is worse than being a skin-sloughing, limb-losing, maggot-housing, brain-craving undead girl. Nothing.

It wouldn’t be so bad if humans didn’t insist on “Living Impaireds” wearing bands to keep their insatiable appetites in check. And if LIs want to coexist with humans, then rules must be followed, no matter how ludicrous they might seem.

Why do undead teenagers have to go to high school anyway?

Zia does her best to blend in and go unnoticed, but when a new group of LIs are bussed in from another school and she finds herself part of a growing horde, all bets are off.

Besides, rules are meant to be broken—especially when an unbeating heart is pulled in two different directions.

Excerpt
“Hey, you dropped something.”

I turn around, surprised anyone else was in the hall with me, and see Eli holding something of mine in his hand.

I’m not sure what to make of this or even where he came from—most likely the stoner boys’ bathroom where he snuck a smoke or something. He’s popular in a dangerous, non-lethal, totally human way. He’s been mistaken for a vamp before, with his dark leather jacket and the usual black pants. He isn’t a vamp at all. He just dresses like one.

Eli Olsen is a normal human. Why is he talking to me?

I retrace a few of my steps and he meets me in the middle. He holds his hand out toward me, and I’m immediately petrified and embarrassed.

He’s holding my finger in the palm of his hand. My finger!

“Oh my gosh!” I look down at my hand, hoping beyond all hope the finger he is holding isn’t mine. But it is. It fell off and I didn’t even realize it. “I’m so sorry.” I snatch it from his hand. When I look at his face, I don’t see any hint of horror. He stands there as if he was handing me a piece of gum or something equally common and not my detached finger.

The bell rings and I hurry and shove it in my pocket, not sure what else to do with it. Kids file out of the classroom and push past, for the most part ignoring us.

I turn to leave since I’m already running behind and also want to hide my utter humiliation.

Eli grabs my arm and stops me. “I can fix that,” he says, motioning to the finger in my pocket. “That is, if you want me to.”

I still don’t understand why he is talking to me. He never talked to me before I was a zombie; we didn’t run in the same circles. “Okay.” I’m not sure why I say that. Maybe because I had no idea what to do with my finger, anyway.

He starts to walk away, heading in the opposite direction, but calls back, “Meet me in Mr. T’s room after school.”

I nod, but worry this might be some sort of sick joke. Humans think it’s funny to mock and terrorize us. We’re the monsters, but they’re the bullies.

***

It’s weird to have a finger in my pocket. No one else knows it’s there, and only Lewis notices it’s missing from my hand.

“Umm… you had five fingers on that hand this morning, didn’t you?” He takes a big bite from his lamb sandwich—his usual. It’s chilly outside, but not too bad, and so we sit together on a bench under the school marquee.

“Yeah.” I reach in my pocket and pull it out to show him.

Lewis is a good friend. He doesn’t even back away. “That’s nasty.” He takes another bite of his sandwich.

“I know.” I shove the wrinkled digit back in my pocket. “Eli says he can help me fix it.”

He tips his head and raises an eyebrow. “Eli? As in Eli Olsen?”

I nod before I sip at my thermos. Gooey chunks of meaty flesh and blood slide down my throat.

“I thought he was expelled for punching Marcus in the face last week.” Marcus is a vamp—a mean one, at that. He’s a least six-foot-five and weighs over two hundred pounds. I can’t imagine Eli punching him in the face. He’s not tall enough, for one thing, and it would have surly gotten him killed for another. Since Eli is still alive, it seems like something is wrong with the story.

“I have no idea. He’s here, that’s all I know.”

“So how the heck is he going to fix your finger?”

“Not sure. He told me to meet him in Mr. T’s room after school.”

“The wood shop class?” Lewis cringes. “There’s a lot of stuff in there that could be used to kill you. Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

I shrug and take another sip from my thermos. It always tastes better at 98.7 degrees. I settle for room temperature. “If I show up at home without a finger, my dad will start crying again. He already feels bad enough for doing this to me. If I can’t get it fixed somehow, he’ll just end up feeling even worse.”

“What about the school nurse?” He pops some strips of uncooked bacon in his mouth.

“How would she fix it? With a band-aid? Besides, we both know she would never help someone like me. She’s too afraid.” I slurp what’s left at the bottom of my thermos. It’s never enough and I’m still hungry.

“You’re probably right. Well, I guess it can’t hurt to see what Eli can do. Worst case scenario, he ends up killing you.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Lewis pats me on the back before he stands and makes a jump shot, landing his sandwich wrapper in the garbage can thirty feet away. Too bad they won’t let him on the basketball team. Our one-win-in-five-games team could use his help. Humans are stupid sometimes.

He starts to walk away but turns to look at me once more. “If you don’t make it out alive, I sure am going to miss you.” He smiles, and his dimples make their appearance on his handsome face.

Too bad he’s a werewolf.

Moreover, too bad I’m a zombie.

***

I push open the door to Mr. T’s room and hesitate before stepping inside. Large machines and shiny metal tools line the walls and various work benches. There’s an ominous humming coming from one extra intimidating machine to my left, and there’s an overall painter-sawdusty smell that permeates the air. Crap. Lewis was right. I could lose more than my brain here.

I’m about to change my mind and walk away when Eli calls to me. “Zia, over here!”  He’s sitting near the back, his backpack tossed on the floor, and several bottles of chemicals on the table in front of him. He waves me over.

I didn’t even know he knew my name. Being only one of two zombies in the school, I should have figured he’d know.

I start walking to where he sits, waiting for me. The wood shop is empty. Not even the teacher is here, which I find rather disturbing. Shouldn’t someone be monitoring our activity? What if Eli is about to blow up the place with his chemical concoction or tries to decapitate me? There are laws against both of those things, but it doesn’t stop some people from trying it.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he says. “I think I got it figured out.”

I’m still not sure about this. Sandpaper lies next to everything else he has placed on the table. Sandpaper can’t be good.

“You still got your finger?” He looks at me, and I nod. I reach in my pocket and hand it over to him.

He turns it over, studying it, before he sets it down. “Let me see your hand.”

I’m rather embarrassed. I’ve been trying to hide it all day—self-conscious, I guess.

“It’s okay.” He holds his hand out to me, and I slowly slip my hand into his. He doesn’t freak or scream. He looks at the knuckle where the finger snapped off and stares at the jagged bone. “Do you know how you did it?”

I shake my head. “I have no idea. It was attached one minute. The next, it was in your hand.”

“Interesting,” he says while still holding my hand in his. He glances at me and smiles. “So you don’t feel any pain at all?”

“No, nothing.”

“Then you need to be more careful.”

I indicated my finger on the table. “Don’t I know it.”

“Your hand’s really cold.” He turns my hand first one way and then another.

“Sorry.” I try to pull my hand from his, but he continues to hold it and doesn’t let go.

“It’s okay,” he says. “It doesn’t bother me.”

I ask the question that’s been on my mind all day. “Why are you doing this?”

He narrows his brows and looks at me as though I’ve asked an odd question. “I thought I could help.”

“That’s exactly what I mean. No one helps me. Not now, anyway.”

He’s still holding my hand. “I refuse to play school politic type games. I have nothing against vamps or werewolves”—he pauses and looks at me—”or zombies, but if anyone tries to bite me or suck my blood, I’ll have to kill them.”

I nod. “Fair enough.” I wouldn’t expect any less. It was only several months ago I carried a wooden stake, a machete, and small pistol loaded with silver bullets in my backpack. ‘Tis the way of the world now. Most everyone has some sort of concealed weapon on them, including preschool children.

Now, I’m on the other side, hoping no one will use their weapons on me. I do my best to behave and follow the rules, all of them, even if I don’t completely agree.

“For the epoxy to stick, I’ll have to sand down the two ends of the bones. They won’t match up and hold together otherwise, but I can have this fixed in no time.”

I watch him fold the sandpaper lengthwise, grab my hand once again, and with as much gentleness he can afford, he runs it across my exposed bone, being careful not to nick the remaining skin around it.

“You doing okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt.” Vibrations run up the length of my arm. That’s it. I feel no pain.

“Did you miss the bus?”

“Yeah, but that’s okay. If you can fix my finger, it will be worth it. My dad is still having a hard time with this whole me being-a-zombie thing.”

“I can give you a ride home if you like.”

“That’s okay. I don’t want to put you out. You’re doing enough as it is and, really, I can walk. It’s not far.” My home is only a few miles from the school. If I’m lucky, don’t run into trouble and walk faster than my normal gait, I should be home a little after dark.

“And risk you losing another finger? No way. I’ll take you home.”

“Eli, that’s nice and everything, but…I’ll stink up your car. It’s not an easy smell to get rid of either. It’s better if I walk.” I hate bringing it up.

“I have a motorcycle. The smell won’t even be a problem.” He looks up and stops sanding my finger. “Besides, your smell isn’t that bad. Rory’s is much worse.”

He picks up my finger and sands the bone. When he finishes, he sets it aside and begins to mix the powder and liquid compounds.

“This will set fast, so I’ve got to get it right the first time. You don’t want me gluing your finger on backwards.”

A backward finger would be the least of my problems, but I don’t say so. He puts a bit of the goo on my finger, takes my hand once more, and presses the two pieces together.

“Isn’t Isabelle your sister or something?” He continues to hold my finger in place.

“Or something. She’s my step-sister. Why?”

He shakes his head. “No reason. I was trying to connect the dots. I guess being step-sisters would explain why you’re pretty cool to talk to and she’s… not. No offense, but she’s a bit of a snob.”

“No offense taken. I completely agree with you. Imagine what it’s like living with her.”

Eli laughs a little. “That’s okay. I’d rather not.” He releases my hand. “Test that out. See what you think.”

I bend my finger and move it around. It seems to be working fine. Eli grabs my reattached digit and gives it a tug. “Don’t toot.”

“What?”

“Never mind,” he says. “Bad joke. Looks like it’s holding.”

Eli did a great job. He even glued the skin around my finger into place and unless someone looks closely, no one could even tell.

“Thanks. It looks almost as good as new.””No problem. Let me clean up here and then I’ll take you home.”

He’s the first human, besides my parents, to take any interest in me. It’s kind of strange. Even though I’m not sure what to make of it, I like it.

About the Author
I hear voices. Tiny fictional people sit on my shoulders and whisper their stories in my ear. Instead of medicating myself, I decided to pick up a pen, write down everything those voices tell me, and turn it into a book. I’m not crazy. I’m an author.

For the most part, I write contemporary Young Adult novels. However, through a writing exercise that spiraled out of control, I found myself writing about zombies terrorizing the Wild Wild West—and loving it. My zombies don’t sparkle, and they definitely don’t cuddle. At least, I wouldn’t suggest it.

I live on the benches of the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with two lovely children, one teenager, and a very patient husband. I graduated from Utah State University with a B.A. degree in English, not because of my love for the written word, but because it was the only major that didn’t require math. I can’t spell, and grammar is my arch nemesis. But they gave me the degree, and there are no take backs.

As a child, I never sucked on a pacifier; I chewed on a pencil. I’ve been writing that long. It has only been the past few years that I’ve pursued it professionally, forged relationships with other like-minded individuals, and determined to make a career out of it.

Excerpt #2
Our eyes were locked on each other, and I was glad to see he seemed lighter. He took a step closer, closing the space between us so our bodies were touching each other. I felt my heartbeat quicken, and butterflies fluttered about my stomach. This was an intimate space, and he clearly entered it. The air between us changed, it was more electric. He put his hands on each side of my face, and then gently but possessively, he took my mouth against his. He kissed gently at first, and I felt my knees grow weak. His lips were soft, and his breath was hot. I let my mind go and became enveloped in the overwhelming love that Jay exuded. He urged my mouth open and our kiss became more intimate. I felt the heat rising in my cheeks and followed Jay’s lead. His hands trailed down my arms and wrapped around my torso. The kisses returned to gentle nibbles, and then to sweet pecks before he pulled away to look at me. All traces of sadness were gone from his face, from inside of me. There was light and love there instead. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time,” he said.

Synopsis
In Awakening, the first installment in the Dark Rituals series, a former healer turns to the Death Arts to seek revenge.

Seventeen-year-old Colina was born a healer. But after a horrific event forces her to leave her clan, she becomes desperate to learn the dark magic of the death dealers, mages who draw their power from the spirits of the dead. Colina was taught to fear and hate death dealers, but becoming one of them is the only way for her to get the revenge she seeks—and the only way for her to survive.

Colina asks a young death dealer named Luke to help her, but he’s reluctant to train her in the Death Arts. Little does she know convincing him to teach her will be the easiest part of her journey. To become a death dealer, Colina will need to undergo three dark rituals, each more terrifying than the last. At the same time, she’ll have to deal with her growing feelings for her mentor. Too bad the first ritual involves him strangling her to death.

As Colina undergoes the trials, she discovers an untapped darkness within herself. If she survives the horrific rituals and gains dark power, what will she become?

Catrina Burgess’ Dark Rituals series originally appeared on Wattpad with over three million reads. Awakening is the first book of four and was named Wattpad’s Best Suspense Story of 2014.

Excerpt #1
I shrugged my shoulders. “Look, everything in life is a risk—a gamble. I’m here, and I’m throwing the dice.” I didn’t want to ask the next question on my mind. It’d been haunting me ever since he’d told me about the ritual, but now, standing here in the cemetery, I had to know. “How are you going to do it?” I whispered.

“Strangulation is the easiest.” His voice was suddenly void of emotion.

What the hell did he mean, “strangulation is the easiest?” I assumed he’d give me a potion. I’d drink something, slowly fade out, and then be given an antidote to undo the spell.

“I’m going to put my hands around your neck and squeeze the life out of you. You have to experience the pain—experience your death at the hands of a death dealer. It’s the only way the ritual works.” Fear—there it was again in his eyes. “You don’t have to do this. It’s crazy we’re doing this.”

I took a deep breath and stepped toward him, even though my body screamed at me to run away from certain pain and death. “You know we don’t have a choice. If you want to save your sister, you need my help. I can’t help you as I am. I need power.” It was true—I wanted to save his sister—but I also wanted to exact my revenge, and I was willing to do anything to see the men who killed my family pay.

About the Author
I’ve been known to eat pizza and cold Chinese food for breakfast, and I’m the queen of the board game Stratego. I’ve never been beaten. NEVER!

I write because it helps keeps the darkness away and reminds me that there is magic in the world.

I live with one husband, two dogs, and a cat named Shitty Kitty in a small mining town in Arizona. At night this place is definitely spooky. I swear I’ve heard the wind giggle, and sometimes there’s a very odd breeze. Luckily, I love all things that go bump in the night.

I adore old movies. I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan.
