4 Stars

Synopsis
Minerva Dobbs knows that happily-ever-after is a fairy tale, especially with a man who asked her to dinner to win a bet. Even if he is gorgeous and successful Calvin Morrisey. Cal knows commitment is impossible, especially with a woman as cranky as Min Dobbs. Even if she does wear great shoes and keeps him on his toes. When they say good-bye at the end of their evening, they cut their losses and agree never to see each other again.

But Fate has other plans, and it’s not long before Min and Cal meet again. Soon, they’re dealing with a jealous ex-boyfriend, Krispy Kreme donuts, a determined psychologist, chaos theory, a freakishly intelligent cat, Chicken Marsala, and more risky propositions than either of them ever dreamed of. Including the biggest gamble of all—true love.

My Review
One of my favorite Jennifer Crusie novels so far. The characters are the best! Min is wonderful and I love the fact that she isn’t beautiful, and that she doesn’t go through some makeover to become more attractive. I love that Cal isn’t shallow and sees the best in Min. The underlying bet is a fun thread that starts the story and is pulled through the plot to the very end. When Min’s boyfriend, David, dumps her, she’s not so much sad as she is distraught by what her mother’s reaction will be. Min has spent her entire life trying to please a woman who will never be pleased, but her mom loves David. Now with her sister’s wedding looming, she needs a date, fast.

Enter Cal. He likes to bet. So when David bets him ten dollars he can’t get “cold fish” Min to go to dinner with him, Cal takes that bet. But David takes it a step further, betting Cal he can’t get her into bed within thirty days. Thus begins a hilarious tale of two people who everyone can see belong together except the two themselves.

Plot
The plot centers around Min’s and Cal’s relationship, the push and pull of desire and the belief that the other person is wrong for them. Min believes Cal is only trying to win the bet. Cal believes Min hates him, and considering her biting wit, it’s easy to see why. But fate throws them together over and over again and it’s cute to watch what happens. The chemistry is palpable and the situations the author puts them in are deliciously fun. The cast is large, as most Cruise novels are, and there are several solid subplots involving Min’s friends, Cal’s family, and Min’s sister’s wedding. Each subplot supports the main plot and development of the main characters.

Characters
Once again, Cruise delivers quirky, outrageous, yet infinitely loveable characters. Min is outspoken and yet has an edge of self-doubt, thanks to her mother’s constant criticisms. Cal has his own issues, although they’re more subtle. Min’s friends are all unique, as are Cal’s and no one came across as stereotypical. I adored the interaction between Cal and Min’s friends. There was just enough development in the main characters to keep the story from being too comedic, bringing a sense of authenticity to them. Even Min’s sister gets her own arc, and her parents have a small one.

Ending
At first, I felt like the ending went on way too long, but in retrospect, it was perfect. Even though the romance was resolved, there is a hilarious scene at the end that really summed up all the themes in the book. And the epilogue was a cherry on top of this yummy story.

Bottom Line
Bet Me is my favorite Jennifer Crusie book to date, with adorable characters and witty dialogue.

About the Author
Jennifer Crusie was researching her dissertation on the differences in the way men and women tell stories when she got sidetracked into writing romance novels.

Her first book was published in 1993 (which pretty much finished off any hope of her getting that PhD) and her twenty-second book, Maybe This Time, came out in August of 2010, all of which she considers a minor miracle, especially since she is also a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller and a two-time Rita award winner.

Jenny is currently working on her new Liz Danger mystery series. She is a very happy woman..

Rocker Shenanigans I:
Sylvie Drake is ecstatic when her rock-goddess sister invites her to a charity event in the Bahamas. With a lineup featuring legends like Night Shifts Black, Clown Irruption, and Tracing Holland, how could this weekend not be totally epic?

One word: Shandor.

Smoldering gaze, cocky smile, and passionate hands that dominate a guitar. Everything about this mysterious stranger screams out-of-her-league.

Shandor Xodyar is here to work. And keep his fiery cousin out of trouble with the threat of former flames breathing down their necks. What he didn’t count on is a three-word bombshell disrupting his mission:

Unassumingly sexy, raw, and barely legal, there’s no way entertaining the forbidden electricity can end well.

Then again, some ignored warnings are worth the consequences.

Excerpt #2
SHANDOR

I guide Sylvie away, toward Luke’s and my former outpost. She’s wearing flat shoes, pink ones that remind me of dancers. They’re as innocent as she is.

“Are you mad? Sorry I said all that. Shit-shit-shit,” she adds now that Big Sis is out of the way.

I turn her around and link her against me. Ah talk about insta-whatever-this-is. It’s only been hours, and I already missed holding her close.

Love Fire.

She’s young. Complicated. I shouldn’t do this. As if that wasn’t enough, she lives in Canada, while I tour the world for a living. I’ve only known this living compulsion of a woman for twenty-four hours. “No, I’m not mad. Good day so far?” I force myself to add.

“It’s been whatever,” she says, sounding composed and subtly unhappy at once, a girl thing. Gypsy women are clear about their feelings though. If it’s red, it’s red. It won’t be salmon-colored.

“You know what’s super-sad about texts? You can’t take them back.”

I’ve found my wall partition again and lean the two of us against it. “Yeah?” I tug on a turquoise loop of hair that happened to land on my knuckles. “What would you have taken back? I’ll erase it from my mind.”

“Yeah, right,” she says, rolling her eyes. “Anyway. I wanted to say that…”

I meet her gaze, waiting for the rest, but the more she stares back, the more she chickens out.

“Sylvie?”

“Yeah…” She breathes it out. Which is an issue. We’ll have to work on that.

“Will you stop?”

“What?”

“Stop being mouthwatering.” Eyes like saucers do exist, and they’re the prettiest thing you’ll ever see. “Listen.” I frame her face with my hands and try to make her understand. For emphasis, I give her a headshake before I move on. “You know how long it’s been since we met?”

She nods fast though my question was only rhetorical. I realize she probably has it down to the hour.

“Okay, because I’m trying really hard, here.”

“You are?” She sounds like that’s a good thing, but I was going to tell her I’m thinking we should not do the quick version of an entire relationship in four days. If things go according to—I don’t know—everything we’ve done so far—we’ll be fucking pregnant in four days.

Wait…

No, we’re good.

“Yes. Sylvie.” I tighten my hold to make her focus. “You’re how old?” Rhetorical again. It’s not like I’ll ever forget face-planting to a teen goddess.

“Twenty.”

Um.

“So. Sylvie. You just started college. You’re stead-bound for four long fucking years. Me, I’m about to turn twenty-six, and I’m never in one place more than a week at a time.” I’ve been with her since Friday, I think next. What in the freaking world makes me even talk like this?

About the Author
Between studies, teaching, and advising, Sunniva has spent her entire adult life in a college environment. Most of her novels are new adult romance geared toward smart, passionate readers with a love for eclectic language and engaging their brain as well as their heart while reading.

Born in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the author spent her early twenties making the world her playground. Southern Europe: Spain, Italy, Greece–Argentina: Buenos Aires, in particular. The United States finally kept her interest, and after half a decade in Los Angeles, she now lounges in the beautiful city of Savannah.

Sometimes, Sunniva writes with a paranormal twist (Shattering Halos, Stargazer, and Cat Love). At other times, it’s contemporary (Pandora Wild Child, Leon’s Way, Adrenaline Crush, Walking Heartbreak, and Dodging Trains, coming in late March 2016).

This author is the happiest when her characters let their emotions run off with them, shaping her stories in ways she never foresaw. She loves bad-boys and good-boys run amok, and like in real life, her goal is to keep the reader on her toes until the end of each story.

Synopsis
My name is Brooke Barker…
And I’m a freaking disaster.

No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.

Not to mention I’m completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.

The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.

The second problem? He’s my best friend.

My shut-up-and-put-harry-potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampon, kinda best friend.

And that’s all he can be, right?

Right.

Being Brooke is a standalone romantic comedy. Hilarious, super-sexy, and possibly highly inappropriate at times, this is the perfect feel-good read!

If Holly Woods survives this.

Excerpt
Cain’s phone begins to buzz on the table. The screen lights up, and the short name on the screen makes me have to fight a frown.

I know it’s Nina. It always is. It’s like she has a Brooke-dar. She can sense whenever Cain and I are alone and hanging out.

My heart sinks, slowly but heavily, and I school my expression into one of not caring. I refuse to look away from the TV now.

Cain hands me his pizza box, which I take, begrudgingly, then he leans forward and grabs his phone. He waits for the buzzing to stop, then unlocks it and turns it off vibrate.

Then? Then he shoves it under the table, screen down.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

I gape at him. I can’t help it.

A piece of pepperoni drops off the slice of pizza in my hand—the same one that’s frozen halfway to my mouth as I stare at him in total disbelief. Did he really just do it?

“What?” Cain shrugs and takes his box back, grabbing a piece of half-eaten, meaty pizza and shoving the end in his mouth. The crust crunches as he bites down.

I swallow and glance at the coffee table. “I don’t think you’ve ever not taken a call from her.” I can’t help the derogatory way I say ’her’. It’s not intentional—honest. It’s ingrained in me to be vicious to other women. I think it’s a female thing. Self-preservation and all that.

“I don’t think I ever haven’t either.” Cain tilts his head to the side and meets my gaze, a suspicious glint in his green eyes. “But the point is, we haven’t done this in weeks, and I’m having too much fun to leave. Besides, we have all this junk food. If I don’t help you eat it, you’ll eat it all, then it’ll be my fault when your pants don’t fit.”

Oh my god.

“Does she know you’re here?” I smirk slyly and raise my eyebrows.

He shifts uncomfortably. With a cough, he puts his pizza down and grabs his beer bottle to swig from it.

Oh. My. Shitty. Life.

“She doesn’t, does she?” I sit up straight, throwing my half-slice back into my box and shoving his shoulder. “Cain!”

“No,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his ear. “She doesn’t know.”

I laugh. I can’t help it. It’s totally immature of me to delight in the fact he hasn’t told the Prissy Princess where is he and he’s ignoring her calls, but I do. It’s hilarious.

And, okay. I’m smug. Totally smug. There’s only one reason he hasn’t told her, and that’s because she hates me too.

Bitchy Best Friend Mission: Level Up!

“And tell me.” I snicker, just about holding back the volcano of laughter threatening to erupt. “Where does Nina think you are?”

“She thinks I’m at Mom’s.” He looks at me, his lips flattening into a thin line. “Stop laughing, B. No, don’t shake your damn head. I fucking mean it. She’s a little insecure over my friendship with you and Carly, that’s all. Sometimes it’s easier to just tell a… little white lie.”

“A little white lie? She thinks you’re at your mom’s!” I laugh harder and wipe at my eyes because they feel a little too wet.

“I just want the best of both worlds right now, all right?”

“What is the best of both worlds? Pizza with me and blow jobs from her?”

“She chooses not to eat gluten. Until she finds a gluten-free recipe she likes, I can’t eat pizza when she’s around.”

Which is a lot.

I raise my eyebrows again. “Your girlfriend won’t eat gluten but she’ll happily put your dick in her mouth?”

“Brooke. Don’t be a bitch.” He chucks a piece of chicken from his pizza at me, his eyes narrowing.

I’m dying. I think this is it—this is how I die, laughing at Cain’s lame excuses for lying to his girlfriend about spending time with me.

“Oh my fuck. This is hilarious. Seriously. Someone call Comedy Central.”

“Brooke.” He says my name again, this time quieter.

I stop laughing. Just about.

“I’m sorry. I just think it’s funny. You want me to be nice to her but you lie to her about spending time with me.” I shrug a shoulder and peel a piece of pepperoni off my pizza. I’m not even that hungry anymore.

He sighs, putting the top down on his box, and sits back. “She thinks there’s something going on between us.”

I laugh even harder because I might cry if I don’t.

Hi, breaking heart. Grab the tissues, yo.

There’s an awkward silence hanging between us now. It’s not the first time someone has thought that, but given that the more time I spend with Cain, the more I seem to fall for him, it’s awkward. Especially since he’s lying to her just to hang out with me.

I clear my throat and look up at him. “That’s ridiculous. You’re my best friend. Like anything would ever happen between us. I can’t put up with your shit taste in music, for a start.”

“Exactly,” he replies in a quieter voice, scratching behind his ear again. “It’s fucking stupid. I can’t stand your taste in music either. Who the fuck likes Justin Bieber?”

“People who think Kanye West should retire.”

Young Adult Book Review – My Junior Year of Loathing (School Dayz) by Jennifer DiGiovanni

My Junior Year of Loathing (School Dayz #2) by Jennifer DiGiovanni

My Junior Year of Loathing (School Dayz #2) by Jennifer DiGiovanni

5 Stars

Synopsis
Junior year is supposed to be tough. Exams, term papers, homework, college tours, and participation in extra-curricular activities can all add up to non-stop stress. But Melinda Banner has goals to achieve and dreams to make real. This year, she’ll be unstoppable. But even over achievers need a break.

While walking in the woods to take a break from the stress of it all, Melinda meets a boy named Connor. After a few more run-ins, the two settle into an uneasy friendship, if you can even call it that.

But Connor’s closed and mysterious. Whenever Melinda asks too many questions, he suddenly has to go or is no longer interested in talking. When they’re together, she’s torn between wanting him to open up and running away as fast as she can. Still she can’t seem to shake her budding interest in him.

Connor has his own way of looking at the world, and his views often conflict with Melinda’s practical nature. Can you like someone and loathe them at the same time? Is he even worth the emotional tug on her heartstrings or distraction from all things Junior year?

And, as if she needs another project right now, Melinda starts to obsess over the abandoned estate she passes on the way to school each day. Between Connor and the old estate, Melinda’s beginning to think she’s taking on too much.

But Melinda’s smart. She finds a way to indulge her interest in the estate and fulfill her obligations. She will uncover the truth behind the aging edifice for an epic article in the school newspaper.

But when her investigation reveals a connection between Connor and a tragedy long-since forgotten, Melinda has a choice: put off her junior year achievements to save a local landmark and a boy who constantly pushes her away or put them both out of her mind for good and focus on making the grade.

 —————————————————————————-

My Review
The second book in the School Dayz series, this is my favorite so far. Melinda, Sadie’s romantic rival from book one, is a smart, serious girl with goals. When her mom remarries, she moves into a virtual mansion where she’s forced to adjust to a different way of life. Her relocation also puts her squarely in the path of mysterious Connor of the Woods, a boy she meets lurking in the forested area behind her stepfather’s estate. Her best friend, Becca, begins dating Will, who pushes her to double-date his buddy, Ty. Ty is tall, cute, normal. Connor is anything but normal, but Melinda is inescapably drawn to him, setting up a showdown with her emotions. Will she choose Ty and security, or Connor and all the drama that surrounds him?

Plot
There is a bit of a mystery woven into the plot. Well, a couple of mysteries, actually. One being the secret Connor is hiding and the other is what happened behind the big wall of the old Westerly Estate. Some people say the old house is haunted, and Melinda is determined to find out what really happened. But the primary plot is the romance between Melinda, Ty, and Connor. It’s not a traditional love triangle, so if those turn you off, don’t discount this book just yet. It’s a great story, with Jennifer DiGiovanni’s signature quirky, funny characters, and lots of super sweet moments.

Characters
Once again, the author creates a cast of unique characters that are easy to love. Melinda is serious and driven with an incredible soft spot in her heart. Connor is an enigma until we find out his whole story, but he never comes across as anything other than fully developed. Will, Ty, Becca, the estate’s caretaker, Jack, and Melinda’s family all support the story. Jack in particular is an intriguing character who adds a lot to the story.

Top things I LOVED About My Junior Year of Loathing
1. The mystery. It was incorporated really well into the main plot.

2. Jack. The gruff landscaper provides some great moments with both Melinda and Connor.

3. Melinda. I love seeing more of her in this installment. She wasn’t my favorite person in My Senior Year of Awesome, but after getting her story and her point of view, I adore her.

4. Connor. The boy from the woods is strong, mysterious, caring, and more than a little hot.

5. Will. As the arrogant football player dating Melinda’s best friend, he provides some of the best comic moments.

Bottom Line
My favorite book in the series so far, includes great romance, a mystery, and fantastic characters.

Synopsis
Daisy Kirkwood and her best friend Kammie have adjusted to life on an alien planet pretty well, all things considered. And thanks to Daisy’s alien pop star boyfriend, Griffin Valentino, she has plenty of sexy new experiences to keep her busy. But it’s not possible to take a massive music nerd away from her home planet and not expect her to pine for a concert or a record store at least in once in a while.

Heading back to Earth with Griffin and his best friend Dev for a brief but much-needed visit, the girls want nothing more than to catch up on the underground music scene of New York City. Unfortunately, thanks to Griffin’s less-than-stellar space traveling skills, they accidentally pick up a hitchhiker. Or three hundred. Their many-legged stowaway beasties take up residence in the darkest, creepiest corners of Manhattan, leaving the gang no choice but to experience a very different underground than they bargained for.

Giant alien bugs aside, Griffin has some epic plans of his own for their trip, plans that involve a concert, an album… and the most outrageous marriage proposal that Earth has ever seen.

Engaged to an Alien Pop Star Teaser 1

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt #2
Space travel has long been theorized. We’ve imagined cheerfully zipping about in spaceships, jumping from point A to B by way of mysterious wormholes. We’ve also imagined going into a deep sleep for thousands of years, while our families and friends back home get old, blow themselves up, and allow Earth to be reclaimed by vines and wild animals.

But Kalesstrians walk through space from location to location.

It’s a very complicated process that Dev has tried to explain to me several times. I’ve only absorbed it in the barest bones of theory, despite his valiant attempts. We walk through a dimension door and are shot to a pre-set coordinate on the other side. The travel has to be conducted with the help of communicators, and it is crucial that the coordinates are right. That last bit is especially important, because ending up in space, an active volcano, or a politician’s bedroom is not something anyone wants.

This is precisely why Griffin traveling us back makes me so nervous.

“Where did you set us to land?” I ask as we all head outside together to the predetermined launch spot. I glance skyward several times, a habit I’ve formed while living on Kalesstria. The weather here is unpredictable and extremely dangerous at times, so one can never be too careful. “Please tell me nowhere too populated.”

“Well, we’re not going to Chinatown again, that’s for certain,” Griffin says with a traumatized expression. “Last time I went there, a man tried to keep me in his shop and sell me for ten American dollars.”

I eyeball his floral pants. “Were you wearing that? Because if so, he marked you up way too much.”

Griffin shoots me a nasty look and ruffles his hair. “I was not. I was wearing a black jacket with feathers, and some very fitted Diesel jeans, thank you very much. I looked bloody enchanting.”

“What were you doing in Chinatown, anyway?” Kammie asks, setting her bags down.

“Daisy needed hairspray.” Now Griffin looks a bit guilty, toeing at the dusty ground with one red cowboy boot. “And I wanted to get a fortune cookie.”

Now that I think about it, I’d told Griffin one night about how delicious Chinese food is, and how a fortune cookie comes with every meal. He’d had a lot of questions about it.

Kammie motions at him. “Well, did you get a fortune cookie?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

Griffin’s face blossoms red with a blush. “I don’t remember. Anyway, I need to finish setting our coordinates.” He fishes his communicator out of his pocket and nervously taps away at it.

Kalesstrian ‘communicators’ do a little bit of everything; they capture holopics and holovids, and operate as super-crazy advanced cell phones. They’re also necessary for long-distance travel. If Apple ever catches wind of them, they’ll definitely break Steve Jobs’ cryo-corpse out of its hiding place and bring him back to life just to patent the iCommunicator. I still barely understand how to turn one on, never mind use it for travel.

“C’mon, Griff,” Kammie insists. “You’re not the type who would forget your first fortune cookie. Besides, I want to know. I’m good at interpreting things like this.”

Of course she would say that. Kammie is a bit of a conspiracy-theory connoisseur, and she dabbles in all sorts of weird beliefs about angels, Bigfoot, aliens, and cryptic messages in newspaper clippings. If there’s some kind of superstition, legend, or conspiracy involved in anything, Kammie probably owns four books on the subject.

Griffin raises his eyes from his communicator, pursing his lips. He hesitates a little longer, and then finally huffs. “It said, Don’t forget to close the door behind you. There now, see? It’s nothing cool at all. I don’t believe in fortune cookies.”

Kammie shrugs. “Still, I’d be careful to make sure you always close doors behind you.”

Synopsis
Daisy Kirkwood has only just escaped her small-town life and run away to New York City, the land of last-minute secret gigs at famous musical venues, when she’s kidnapped by aliens. Unfortunately, no one ever writes about how to handle alien abduction in those fancy NYC guidebooks.

Griffin and Dev are supermassively sexy aliens from a politically and environmentally troubled planet who arrive on Earth with very little knowledge about human ways other than what they learned from a wayward E! News signal. Their mission is to pretend to be the most influential people on the planet—English pop stars, of course!—and gain the help of a powerful secret society. Upon arriving, they abduct Daisy Kirkwood, a nerdy young woman who loves music but could seriously use a bit of help in the love-life department. Though Griffin and Daisy initially squabble, neither can deny the intergalactic sparks whenever they’re too close to each other. Together, they must face murderous aliens, cultural misunderstandings, bad backup musicians, and the dark side of fame and the media, all set against a tight deadline…

Part High Fidelity, part Bridget Jones’ Diary, part Doctor Who, Dating an Alien Pop Star is a sexy romantic comedy..

Synopsis
It’s been almost twenty years since Claire met her ex in high school, and now she finds herself thrust into the dating world for the first time as an adult, armed with little more than confusion and lack of experience. Not only is Ron the only man she’s ever been with, she’s also coping with the loss of her fertility, and if she goes on one more hideous blind date – possibly her mind. Determined to avoid both online dating and meetup groups, she endures fix-ups with all sorts of memorable characters, such as weepy Pete, the drunk skunk, the cheap hot-dog eater, and let’s not forget – the unholy speed dater.

As Claire becomes more depressed over her plight, her best friend Jane prompts her to redirect her maternal longings by adopting an adorable wiener dog puppy. Dixie is not a human baby, but hopefully she will provide her new Mommy with a diversion from the parade of loony men marching through her lonely nights – that’s if Mommy’s house and sanity survive the destructive cyclone that is an untrained three-pound ball of craziness!

Unfortunately, while Claire is trying to move on, Ron is trying to pull her back into the past, and his life. Determined to win back his wife’s affections, he offers to help Claire with home repairs as he tries to implement ‘Operation Friends’ in an effort to persuade his wife into giving him another chance. However, Ron is struggling with his own adjustment to single life, and isn’t finding it easy to ditch the Amazon woman, or his new ‘mail order bride’ dating site hobby, no matter how much he has convinced himself that he and Claire belong together.

DAZED & DIVORCED is Book 1 in the Rom-Com on the Edge series. All books are standalone novels, but read in order for maximum fun!

Excerpt #1
Jed clears his throat and says, “So, Claire are you here in pursuit of marriage and a family?”

Even though I have now met several of his type tonight, I remain astounded at their existence. Is there one normal man worthy of a real date? Not just here, but anywhere?

I once again look at the daunting line of potential suitors still slated to come my way and sigh. “I’m not really sure how to answer that. I’m just trying to meet people since my divorce.”

Jed winces, and is probably already praying for this sullied woman…

“But you surely want children?”

I lean back in my seat, finally relaxing my posture. This is unbelievable. The last thing I expected was to discuss my darkest problems at fucking speed dating!

But since Jed’s not even in the neighborhood of a possibility, I fold my arms and say, “I would have loved them, but I can’t have them.”

I expect him to apologize for bringing up a touchy subject, or to express his condolences. Or to tell me that God must have a different plan for me, and that I should come on his mission trip to a malaria-infested jungle to find my calling.

Instead, he places his hands on the table in front of him and grows very serious. “Claire, we must pray that the Lord will bring you children.”

I smile nervously now. “No, prayer won’t help me. I had a hysterectomy.”

He jumps back as our shift change is loudly announced by Mary.

As he stands up, he says, “I see. Well, since you have allowed the devil’s work to be done to your body, I don’t know that you can be—”

A tall, attractive man appears beside psycho Pastor Jed, who obviously has abortion and hysterectomy confused, and says, “Okay, buddy. Nice speech. Let’s move it along. I need to meet this beautiful blonde.”

Jed moves on in disgust and the somewhat hot new guy sits down, and I immediately start laughing. It starts as a smirk but I can’t hold it in.

“And what’s so funny, Miss…Claire?”

His ability to read my nametag on my chest without fear is a good sign, but it’s his name that’s got me in stitches.

“Hello, Christian.”

He now seems to get the joke and says, “Yes, it is rather humorous that my name is Christian and I’m the least holy one in the bunch tonight. Are there some nutters here or what?”

“I’ll say, but let’s not waste time on them. Were you invited here by one of the church ladies?”

“I was.”

He nods his head in the direction of my seat neighbor. I wonder how they know each other, but I don’t want to waste time on useless chatter with the one normal guy here.

“Me, too.” I am suddenly at a loss for words as I take in my new speed date’s dark hair and eyes. I can also peek at his firm chest from here, and his forearms and hands are strong and remind me of Ron’s…ugh…why am I thinking about Ron at a time like this?

“Hey, Claire, I have an idea.” He lowers his voice and continues, “Between you and me, I’m not seeing any good pickings in either direction you or I are headed tonight.”

We both look in the direction of the singles we haven’t met, and I have to agree that it looks dismal.

I turn back towards Christian and say, “What were you thinking?”

I am already feeling a little light-headed with excitement and I haven’t even had a drink. That’s a good sign—and Rebecca keeps telling me how I need to loosen up and take chances.

“I propose we get the hell out of here.” He eyes the door to the parking lot and our freedom.

“Really? Just get up and run out the door?”

I thought he was going to say let’s go outside of their rules and exchange information now, or plan to meet later in the week. Something spontaneous and romantic. But I guess running out of speed dating hand-in-hand with a handsome stranger is pretty romantic—it feels like a movie scene.

I steal one more quick glance down the row to my left at the men coming up next, and I catch the eye of the guy from the parking lot. I’m not looking forward to him telling me about a church sponsored lotion snorting rehab he can recommend, so I look Christian dead in the eye and say, “Okay, but you lead.”

Before anyone even looks up from their own captivating partners, Christian has grabbed my hand and we are in the parking lot, laughing our asses off. I also notice he has a nice one.

“That was sensational. I can’t believe you agreed.”

His smile is huge and I am overjoyed just seeing someone happy because of something I did. I haven’t had much of that lately.

I wipe my eyes in case my happy tears have smudged my makeup, and say, “I am trying to work on my sense of adventure.”

We are still standing in the parking lot, and I’m kind of surprised that none of the church ladies have followed us out here to admonish us for breaking the rules. However, it’s more likely that a round of applause and prayers of thanksgiving have erupted due to the departure of the two heathens.

Really, I do consider myself to be a believer…I’m not sure exactly what I believe, but I’ve never been made to feel like a terrible person before at any church function. Those people are complete whackjobs.

Christian runs his fingers through his thick hair and points to his car. “I’m over there. Do you want to follow me and get a drink first?”

I look in the general direction of his vehicle, and think a moment before saying, “First?”

Synopsis
One day I was be-bopping along jamming to the music in my head while wondering if my thighs could handle grabbing a cupcake on the way home. The next thing I knew, my entire world crashed and burned.

I used to wake up at night in a sweat, crying because I’d dreamt that my husband was cheating on me, or that he hated me, and resented my kids. He’d always hold me close and tell me it was all just a dream, that he loved me and our family and that he’d never let me go.

He was a f*cking liar.

Now I spend my days taking photos of scum just like him, trying to be a champion for other’s being taken advantage of by the losers in our town, and my nights being a single mom to my beautiful twins.

I’ve got great friends who have my back, and a sexy, mysterious motorcycle man who keeps showing up when I need him. Maybe things are starting to look up, and one thing’s for sure…

There’s always room for cupcakes.

Synopsis
One night I was out with my girls enjoying a much needed ladies night while wondering if one more dirty martini would push me over the edge. The next thing I knew, I was in the club’s bathroom listening to a woman screaming, “No,” and a man’s voice growling, “I know you want it.”

That asshole picked the wrong restroom, in the wrong club, at the wrong time.

Little did I know the asshole was Cade’s VP, and although we saved that woman from his clutches that night, she’d be found floating in a motel pool a month later.

Running a PI firm is a lot harder than taking pictures for one, especially when your professional life spills over into your personal one. I’m going through cupcakes like our new puppy goes through piddle pads, and if I’m not careful there’s bound to be a Cupcake Overload.

Reeling from a recent break-up, Anne is surprised when she meets Jim, her handsome ER doctor. She’s been burned one too many times before, with the most recent relationship fail happening not even an hour before they meet! Catching her on-again-off-again now definitely-off-again boyfriend with her roommate, in her own living room, was definitely not how she planned on spending her Saturday.

She definitely didn’t plan on spending it in the ER either!

It’s not been Anne’s best day, to say the least!

Jim’s been looking for ‘The One’ for what seems like forever. His work hours limit his dating life and any women who come into the ER are either drunk out of their minds or are on enough drugs to make rock stars jealous. Getting involved with a patient is the last thing that he wants or needs.

Until Anne.

Will Jim and Anne get their happy ever after or does Ben, her best guy friend, have intentions of his own?

Sometimes, you have to close your eyes and listen to your heart in order to see the future.

Excerpt #1
“Another gin and tonic.”

Stopping abruptly on my way back to the kitchens, I glare down at the clammy, sweaty hand gripping my forearm.

“Excuse me?”

Taken aback, I look to where a rather rotund man is sitting. I can hear his laboured breathing as I start to feel the sweat from his hand seeping into my arm, which he is now holding rather tightly. My eyes must be wide with shock because he loosens his grip after a few short seconds. This is not the sort of establishment where you can reach out and grab someone. Come to think of it, I don’t know a place on this Earth where that’s actually allowed. Even strip clubs have standards limiting such contact.

Staring down at my white button-down shirt, I make sure the world hasn’t gone topsy-turvy and I’ve started working in a strip club.

Tits hanging out with tassels on the nips?

Nope.

Moving on.

Looking back to Mr. Grips-A-Lot, I see his gaze focus on me intently. “You do work here, don’t you?”

Forcing myself to get over his extremely rude behaviour, I stammer a yes.

Without a sideways look at me, he says, “Good, then make it a double.” He shoves his glass in my hand.

Calm blue ocean. Calm blue ocean.

Mr. Grips-A-Lot is a grade A asshole. Trying to calm my nerves before I say something I will regret, I hear the deepest, sexiest sound come from the other side of the table.

“Devlin, leave the lovely lady alone. You can’t treat people like that.”

After a few tense seconds, the ogre lets go of my arm and mumbles an apology. With thinly veiled disgust, I curl my upper lip as I reluctantly accept his apology and turn to thank the man who finally set his friend straight.

Oh mah gawd. Ohh eemmm geee. Holy fucking shit.

“Please forgive Devlin’s behaviour. Apart from being a genius at contract law, he’s not much for social graces.”

“Yeah well, in the imortal words of Einstein, ‘the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.’ I’d say he’s firmly hit his limit for tonight, in more ways than one.”

With that, I escape back toward my section, nearly faltering when I hear the sexiest laugh known to man. It’s deep and rumbly, if that’s even a word, and gives me tingles from my head to my toes. There is no doubt the laughter belongs to Mr. Dark-brown-eyes. Feeling his gaze burning a hole into my back, I risk a glance over my shoulder, confirming my suspicions. He’s staring right at me, his smirk is now a full on cocky smile, and the last thing I see before I turn the corner into my section is his flirtatious wink.

Maybe that old song got it right.

Maybe love can be better the second time around.

Not after I walked away from that life five years ago and ditched the trappings of my success. The keyword being trap.

I left it all behind.

Including her.

Now the ambitious, brilliant, talented, and undeniably beautiful Roslyn Porter is back in my life. I’m not the same person she knew. I’m trying to be a better man.

Roslyn stood a few feet away, blocking the path into the rest of the apartment. Ready?

I peered over her head and attempted to see more of the stylish space. Are you hiding a body back there?

She blanched and her laugh sounded too high. No, of course not.

Youre hiding something.

And youre nosy. Dont we have reservations? You know how this city is these days with all of the hard core foodies. If were late, well lose the table. Plus traffic is a nightmare with all the Viaduct construction.

Fine. Plausible deniability is probably for the best. If you are a serial killer, I dont want to know.

You say the words every girl dreams of hearing, Ashland.

The way she formed the letters of my name made think she wanted to replace land with hole.

Giving her my best grin, I surrendered. Shall we go? I dont want some hipster in a floppy hat getting our table and eating all the best oysters.

She grabbed her purse and a coat from the closet door hidden in the wall in the foyer. Lets go.

Outside she paused. Yours?

I followed her finger to where she pointed at my car. It is.

Her wide eyes met mine. You kept it?

I nodded, but didnt respond further.

I thought you said you got rid of everything.

I might have exaggerated the truth. The car was the most conspicuous, but Id retained some of my more sentimental purchases.

I opened the door for her and she gracefully folded herself into the seat. Once I was buckled into my own seat, she spoke again. Im glad you kept it. Its a beautiful.

Some things are too good to give up.I glanced at her and then in the rearview mirror before pulling into traffic.

Another wingman bites the dust in this enemies to lovers story…

For the past year, I’ve been working my butt off to start my own coffee company on Whidbey.

A weekend in Cabo with sun, tiny bikinis, and vacation hook-ups is exactly the kind of tension relief I need.

Caribou Caldwell is my worst nightmare.

Unfortunately, she’s also the star of my sexiest dreams.

What happens when a small town guy becomes the focus of a million fantasies? As Erik Kelso navigates his sudden notoriety, will his feelings for Cari turn out to be anything but love?

Excerpt #2
Late-summer humidity beads on my skin as last remnants of daylight dissipate, giving way to a bright silver moon. I drink in the scent of wildflowers along with the hum of voices mixing with a choir of cicadas in the woods behind me. When I turn to continue on, I sense a swift movement in the overgrown brush to my left. A branch snaps.

“Who’s there?” My heart ricochets around my chest. I tense my legs, prepped to run at the first sign of danger while my eyes dart along the bottom of the thicket, hoping to find a small animal. Very small. Preferably not a skunk, though.

Another snap, followed by footsteps.

“Just me,” says a male voice. Someone about my size steps out from behind a wide oak tree, hands raised. I give him the once-over, covertly searching for weapons. Dark hair, faded jeans, ratty gray T-shirt, and lace-up combat-style boots. He takes a step forward. We exchange suspicious glances.

“Thinking about calling the cops?” he asks in a low voice.

“Why? Are you a criminal?”

With a shrug, he turns his attention toward the backyard party. “Huh. Another big bash at the Martins. They hire a ten-piece band just for cocktails.”

I scoff. “Why not hook up an iPod and some speakers?”

A smile appears on his moonlit face. “Wireless speakers don’t have enough juice for a yard that size. Plus, nothing’s better than live music when you’re schmoozing with the rich and famous. Do you come here often?” He grimaces. “Man, that sounded cheesy.”

Admittedly, this is an odd time and place for pickup lines. “Actually, I’m a first-time offender. I’m the new kid on this enormous block, which is more like a small city. My mother married Brian Welsh.”

His expression blanks. “Oh.”

“I live about four houses down.” I point in the general direction. Then I second-guess myself. Should I have given this random guy in the woods so much information? He looks about my age, but all sorts of scary. And from the smell of him, he could use a long, hot shower.

He sticks out his hand. “Welcome to the neighborhood. I’m Connor.”

“Mel.” I keep my hands at my sides.

His arm remains extended. “Nice to meet you.” Our eyes meet and hold. Against my better judgement, I offer my hand, allowing his warm fingers to wrap around mine. A crash of drums, followed by laughter, directs our attention back to the party.

Synopsis
A girl desperately tries to avoid the boy she was voted most likely to marry by her senior classmates. To prove senior superlative votes are meaningless, she and her best friend create their own list of awesome high school achievements to be completed by graduation.

It’s the final semester of senior year, and everyone at Harmony High can’t wait to find out the results of the Senior Superlative votes! But the balloon bursts in Sadie’s face when she discovers she’s been voted “Most Likely to Get Married” to Andy – a boy she’s never dated or ever thought of as a potential boyfriend. Completely and utter mortification sets in.

To prove high school means something more than a Senior Superlative award, Sadie and her best friend Jana decide to create their own list of awesome non-academic achievements to be completed before graduation.

Yet, the harder Sadie works to show everyone she’s not the least bit attracted to Andy, the more appealing he becomes. Typical for the girl who can’t seem to achieve anything important, even the completion of one lousy college application.

When senioritis kicks in and the school year dwindles down to mere weeks, Sadie decides to risk her good girl reputation to prove that an Awesome Achievement means much more than any Senior Superlative vote. By the time Sadie realizes her epic screw-up, she just might have lost her chance at the prom date of her dreams.

Excerpt #2
The car display lit up. Ringing filled his car. He glanced from the bumper-to-bumper traffic to the caller I.D., Miklós Kiss.

Édes apa.

His father.

“Where are you, Max?” His dad’s tone was belligerent. One deep breath. Two. Three. Then he spoke.

“I’m in my car on my way to work.”

“I can’t get the stove to work. I want toast for breakfast!”

“Dad. Turn off the oven.”

“What?”

“Make sure all the knobs line up. The word ‘off’ should be at the top of all five knobs.”

“Hold on.”

Max held on. He was out of sick days. Out of personal days. Family leave required planning. There was no way he could rush up to Santa Clarita to check on the gas stove at his father’s house. He was going to have to manage this from his car. And hope his father didn’t blow himself and the entire neighborhood to kingdom come.

“Dad? Apa!”

Clattering of plastic receiver against the wall. His dad was using the hardwired phone his parents had installed nearly forty years ago.

“It’s off. I double checked. How do I get toast? You haven’t answered that one.”

“Use the toaster I bought you two months ago,” he said before he could filter the exasperation from his voice.

“Toaster?”

“Look on the left side of the kitchen,” he said, swerving around some guy who looked like he was reading a magazine. Angelenos had taken multi-tasking to a whole new level. “Next to the drain board.”

“God damn it. Why didn’t you tell me about this before?”

Max resisted the urge to yell back. Of course he’d told his father about the toaster. He’d stood with Miklós in the kitchen reviewing the instructions. He’d watched his father make and eat that first batch of toast.

“You know now, Dad. Get the bread from the fridge. There’s butter on the counter.”

“Where’s the kenyérszalonna?”

The Hungarian bacon without a hint of bacon in it was hard to get in California’s health-obsessed markets. “That’s not an American food, Apa. I’ll look a little harder. But for now there’s butter, okay?”

“Fine. I’m hungry enough to eat this,” Miklós said before the phone clattered in the bracket.

Looking at the watch helped calm Max. He wouldn’t let his dad or the morning’s traffic snarl make a dent in his mood today because the 1960 Rolex Oyster Date was keeping time like a champ.

With no further calls from his father, he knew he’d dodged a bullet today. He could kick the can of part-time or round-the-clock care down the road a little bit further.

Maybe the watch had brought him a little bit of good luck. He’d made it in early for his shift, no problem.

“You want to switch routes?” Carl Fonseca asked when he got to MTA’s depot in Sun Valley.

Carl had one of the most coveted routes, not because it was the prettiest or safest, but because the layover at the corner of Van Nuys and Moorpark was right next to an In-n-Out Burger. It was what Carl had gotten with a ton of seniority and serious maneuvering.

“I’m good,” Max said, trying not to think about the fresh made-to-order burger he’d be missing. Instead he was focused on the extreme unlikelihood he’d see Zoe again. The sliver of a chance had him banking on the forgettable lunch options of his regular route. He’d trade the burger for the chance of a little bit of sunshine Zoe could bring to his day. He’d been caring for his parents for so long that he’d forgotten what it was like to have a little bit of a crush on someone. To be a bit eager for a glimpse of an attractive woman. “I like the chicken wraps from the place on Sunset fine,” he said in response to Carl’s perplexed look.

“Just wanted to say thanks for covering for me when my wife was sick.”

“Make me the offer again in a couple of weeks,” Max said, sure he’d be more appreciative when Zoe faded from his memory. Or when he needed to switch for an appointment with the gerontologist he’d found for his dad.

Synopsis
Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series & Legal Briefs Series, returns with the first of three sizzling standalone books about a family of racy, irresistible Royals.

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka “His Royal Hotness”, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant—hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

***

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.

There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately—the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia—Nicholas is worth it.

***

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is, but more importantly, who he wants to be: a King… or the man who gets to love Olivia forever..

“I have a plan.”

We’re in the library of the suite. Nicholas is behind the desk, his hair falling still damp over his forehead from a recent shower, while James and Tommy stand near the windows.

“Take off your clothes,” I say, dropping a stuffed backpack at my feet.

He stands, giving me a curious, dimple-flashing smile that makes my stomach tingle.

“I like this plan.”

He pulls his shirt over his head—and at the sight of that gorgeous chest and ripped abs, I have to close my mouth to stop the flow of drool.

“Should I send the lads to their room?” he asks.

I toss him a Beastie Boys T-shirt and ripped jeans from the backpack. “They can stay—I’ll get to them in a second.”

Nicholas puts on the outfit, his disguise for the day. I hold up a thick gold chain with a dangling cross, and he dips his head so I can loop it over his neck. Then I squirt gel into my hand and reach up on tiptoes to rub it through his hair—mussing it at the top and slicking the sides.

Perfect.

“Do you know how to drive a motorcycle?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent.” I pull a helmet with a full, tinted face shield out of the backpack and hold it up. “Marty’s bike is downstairs. He said to tell you: break it, you bought…a Ducati.”

Logan steps into the room from where he was stationed just outside the door, lifting his hand, like a traffic cop. “Hold on, now—”

Nicholas takes the helmet. “It’ll be fine, Logan.”

“And,” I say cautiously, turning to the three big, strong, probably-have-a-license-to-kill boys. “I want Nicholas and me to go on this outing alone. You guys stay here.”

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph.” Tommy says.

James makes the sign of the cross.

Logan takes another route. “No fuckin’ way. Not possible.”

But the look on Nicholas’s face says it’s definitely possible.

“No,” Logan insists again, his voice straining with a faint hint of desperation.

“I have an itinerary.” I take the sealed envelope out of the backpack and hand it to Logan. “I wrote everything down for you, just in case—exactly where we’ll be, every minute.” When he starts to tear it open I put my hand on his. “You can’t open it until after we’re gone—it’ll ruin the surprise. But I promise it will be all right. I swear on my life.”

My eyes drift from Logan to Nicholas. “Trust me.”

And I want him to—so much. I want to do this for him, give him something he hasn’t had. Something he’ll remember always: freedom.

Nicholas looks at the helmet, then at Logan. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“Ah…you could get assassinated and the three of us will hang for treason.”

“Don’t be silly,” Nicholas scoffs. “We haven’t hung anyone in years.” He smacks Logan’s back. “It’d be the firing squad.”

Excerpt – Max
“What are you working on?” Max asked.

The drafting chair nearly fell as Zoe jumped a mile high. “You scared the shit out of me. What are you doing skulking around at four in the morning?”

“I wasn’t skulking. I had to go to the bathroom. When I came back, I realized you weren’t in bed.”

“I’m used to living alone,” Zoe said in explanation, shaking her head. “I’ve learned never to ignore the muse. She likes to play hide and go seek sometimes. When she asks to come out to play, I always say yes.”

Halfway between wakefulness and sleep, Max smoothed a hand through her hair and down her back. She was back in the sexy little outfit she’d put on after her shower, but before she’d blown his mind with that massage. Thinking about that massage was certainly waking up certain parts of his body.

“You want to come back to bed?” he asked, all awake now and ready for a second go round.

“Maybe in a little bit,” Zoe said, turning back to the white paper and black ink in front of her. She had a pencil behind one ear. Ink stained most of her fingers. He wondered if she ever got any on the paper. She was scratching the pen across the textured sheet, when he looked close at the drawing. It wasn’t Budapest or Prague or Krakow on the page, but a single level house that looked very much like post World War II suburban Los Angeles.

His eyes snapped to the upper right hand corner. The place where the name of the strip was always placed. But her stylized lettering of Wanderlust was absent. In its place was Canoga Park. It was in pencil, yet to be inked. Max’s eyes wandered across the table. There were three or four Wanderlust strips scattered about that looked halfway completed, pictures drawn, but the words were still in pencil. These Canoga Park strips were nearly done, though.

“Is that the Valley?” he asked.

Zoe jumped again. “You’ve gotta stop doing that. I thought you’d gone back to bed.” Forcefully, she snapped off the klieg bright light that had illuminated the desk. “I’ll come with you this time, make sure you make it.”

Max got into the blanket and duvet laden bed first, then lifted up the covers in blatant invitation. Zoe slipped in, curling toward him. She was quiet so long Max thought she’d fallen asleep. But she shifted her legs, and let out a long sigh.

“What’s that other strip you’re working on?”

“Nothing. Just a throw-away idea.”

“What do you mean, throw-away? Looks like you’ve done some work on it.”

“Not throw-away, exactly. Just something that probably won’t go anywhere. I don’t have a Beetle Bailey or Peanuts. Most strips don’t have that kind of longevity. I certainly don’t think anyone will be hard pressed to continue on Wanderlust after I’m dead. So I have to have some back up plans. It’s not like I’m Mort Walker and have a big family to keep me alive after death.”

“Do you want a family?” Max asked because he very much wanted one when the timing was better.

“I already have a big one. You’ve met every last one of them, I think.”

“I’m asking if you want to get married and have kids.” He was more blatant this time.

“I like to practice,” Zoe said, derailing any further a conversation he really wanted to pursue.

Synopsis
Maybe that old song got it right.

Maybe love can be better the second time around.

When one of my wingmen needs help, I’ll do anything for him, including calling in a favor with the one person I swore I’d never speak to again.

No man is an island, but Dan Ashland comes close. He’s content with his quiet life on Whidbey, a world away from the rat race on the other side of the ferry.

Dan has three great loves in his life: solitude, pizza, and Roslyn Porter.

Better Love is a standalone second chance romance featuring Dan Ashland and the fourth book in the Wingmen series.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
In the end, I agreed to help out with the Naked Whidbey calendar.

For a good cause. How could I say no?

I lied to myself it wasnt to see Roslyn again.

Most definitely wasnt motivated by testing her reactions to me being naked.

Not that Id be full frontal in front of Cari or anyone else.

Unlike a few of the other models,I wasnt an exhibitionist.

Still.

I wanted to know if shed show up.

If shed ogle or look away.

I needed to know if I could get a reaction out of her.

If I could crack her professional facade.

I had to know if somewhere beneath her armor, I could still make her heart beat a little faster.

We scheduled the shoot for early on a Sunday when the restaurant would be closed. Cari kept talking about the morning light and a golden hour. Whatever that meant. All I knew was Erik promised to bring coffee. Lots of coffee.

Once the lighting and her camera had been set up, Cari shooed everyone from the kitchen before instructing me to disrobe. The heat from the brick oven warmed my chest and arms. Id suggested the apron around my waist for the more is lessapproach.

When I fired up the oven, Id made a few prop pizzas, not knowing how much of the pizza man persona Cari wanted or needed for the photo.

I stood with the pizza peel in one hand and my back to the camera, following her commands to shift and change my position for maximumsomething.

I felt the cold air hit my backside when the door opened.

Sorry, Im late! I missed the ferry by three cars and had to wait for the next bo oat.Roslyns voice sputtered out on the last word, turning it into two syllables. Ohmygod. I didnt mean to walk in on the shoot. I—“

A loud crash followed her words then a few soft bumps of a body hitting a chair and possibly a wall. Metal screeching from chair legs scraping across the cement floor and the soft splash of liquid hitting the ground rounded out the symphony of sounds before I turned around.

Beyond the bright studio lights set up behind me, I couldnt make out more than silhouettes. Shading my eyes, I blinked into the dimmer light beyond the camera.

Everything okay back there?

Cari let loose a loud cackle. Thats what happens when you show up late.

Muffled words barely carried to where I stood, thankful for the apron slung low around my waist.

I waited for a sign nothing had been broken or damaged in the tornado of Roslyns arrival.

Its fine. Were all fine. Everythings okay,Roslyns shaky and definitely not normal voice called out. Carry on with what you were doing. Im going to crawl outside and find a quiet place to die.

Dont go on my account.I stepped away from the oven, feeling a little bit like a hospital patient whose gown didnt close in the back.  Dont hurt yourself. Im not even naked. More like pantsless and breaking a slew of health codes.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
I don’t remember him coming in, I really don’t. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to complain when I wake up wrapped in Ollie’s arms, pressed against his chest in a warm embrace.

I stay there, hitting my snooze button, just enjoying this simple moment that I never in my wildest dreams ever thought would actually happen. Okay…maybe in my wildest dreams. Because, well, yeah I’ve certainly imagined this moment a million times. I’ve imagined it so much that I already have the scene perfected, easily recalled in my mind. Oliver McDonough, my impossible crush, lulls me from a deep slumber by whispering morning, beautiful into my ear before pulling me against his chest where I melt into his passionate kiss, jolting alive in a single second as his touch rouses me more efficiently than any cup of coffee ever could.

At least, that’s how I always pictured it.

But, this is real life.

So when I finally find the strength to shift in his arms, turning to face him, I don’t find Oliver McDonough, suave seducer of my dreams. I find Ollie, passed out with drool dribbling down his cheek as a teeny-tiny snore escapes his lips.

But you know what?

It’s better. A million times better.

Because it’s real.

Grinning like an idiot, I lift my palm to his cheek, running my thumb over his skin, drinking him in as my fingers make their way to his thick, dark hair.

“Mhmm,” he murmurs.

“Morning,” I whisper.

He smiles lazily, still keeping his eyes closed. “It’s too early to be morning.”

“Not for those of us who have to get to their office by 8:45 a.m.”

“I hate corporate America,” he grumbles, pulling me closer and tightening his hold. “Screw the man. I don’t want you to leave.”

“You know, when you said you’d show me the advantages of having you as a roommate and a boyfriend, imprisonment wasn’t really what I had in mind,” I tease.

Ollie finally opens his eyes, grinning. “But you were so adorable last night in your drunken stupor, I just couldn’t wake you—literally. I tried. Twice.”

I shove him playfully. “Blame your sister for that.”

“She always has been your bad influence.”

“So how’d I end up with the secret affair?”

Ollie leans in, kissing my neck. “Because I’m an even worse influence.”

My name is Skylar Quinn. I just moved to New York with my best friend Bridget, and I have a confession. Well, more than one. Okay, quite a few really. Fine, here goes!

Confession #1: I’m a sex columnist. Hold on, that’s not really the confession. You see, I’m sort of a virgin…sex columnist.

Confession #2: I’m in love with Bridget’s older brother, Oliver. No—I was. No—I am. Wait, was? Am? Crap.

Excerpt
The next week is blissfully uneventful. I address Palace business during the day, and spend my nights with Olivia—which are so much more than blissful.

While I work, she relaxes like I want her to. She walks the grounds and has found a friend in Franny. They’ve had lunch together a few times, which doesn’t exactly thrill me, but at the very least, I know she’s safe with Simon’s wife.

Franny, and her forked tongue, will protect Olivia from the Lucy-types looking to wound her with their half-truths.

On the rare occasions my brother is sober, he becomes increasingly agitated—like he’s unable to sit still, to stand his own company, or any sound that resembles silence. Finally, he decides to throw a welcome home party for himself.

I’m in my bathroom preparing for his royal yacht party, just showered with a towel around my hips, scraping the last of the shaving cream off my jaw, when Olivia appears in the doorway.

I thought she was lovely from the first moment I saw her. But here, now—her bare, soft skin wrapped in a pink silk robe, her face glowing with well-rested happiness…she’s magnificent.

“So…do you guys have like a gift shop or a convenience store around here?”

I laugh. “A gift shop?”

She holds up a light blue disposable razor. “I’m out of razors. This one’s so dull I could run it over my tongue without drawing blood.”

“Let’s not test that theory. I like your tongue too much.” I wipe my chin with a towel. “I can have the staff bring one to your room.”

The devil on my shoulder—and the angel too—smack me upside the head. And they whisper a much better idea.

“Or…I could help you out.”

Her brows draw together. “Help me out? I can’t use your razor.”

“No, definitely not—you’d cut yourself to ribbons.” I finger the sharp, heavy straight blade. “What I mean is…I could shave for you.”

Her eyes darken, the way they do when she’s right on the edge—right before she comes. And she moves closer to me.

“Do you…want to do that?”

My gaze drags down, down, over every sumptuous inch of her body.

“Oh, yes.”

Synopsis
Joel Anderson doesn’t take anything seriously.

Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he’s not the kind of man you cross, or you’ll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists.

Annika Belousov takes everything seriously.

Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements — affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn’t take lightly. When she’s tapped to produce a reality show at Joel’s shop, she doesn’t think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way.

The second Annika walks into Joel’s shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she’s not having it. He’s all wrong — too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn’t take her long to find out there’s more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line.

Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he’s found his tonic.

About the Author
Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, even though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.

Shopping for an Heir Teaser 1

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt:
He smelled like home. Like love. Like promise and comfort, like passion and disbelief.

“What’s wrong?” he snapped, his face alternating between joy and anger. “Why are you here?”

Coming to her senses, she extracted the thick envelope from her brief bag, looking him square in the eye. “Legal matter. I’ve been instructed to deliver this to you.” She used remarkable restraint in not peering around Gerald to get more of an eyeful of Declan McCormick’s stately form.

Then again, Gerald was an impenetrable wall of muscle himself, not easily subverted. She’d need taller heels to peer around him. He did not move his palm from her arm, and his touch infused her, a deeply satisfying sense of connection slowly creeping along her skin, her breath quickening, his touch ringing bells inside her that had been dormant for a decade.

“What is it?”

“Read it. You’ll understand.” She turned on her heel and started to leave, shaking inside so hard she might trigger the New Madrid fault.

He glared at her. “What? That’s it? Ten years and that’s it?” He pulled back, breaking contact.

All her anxiety faded, like an antidote injected straight into the heart, his words kicking in, providing such clarity.

“Ten years you chose, Gerald,” she hissed, mouth curling, throat seizing. “You do not get to put this on me.” Grief flared in her, a burst like a fireball, and then it turned to the ash of anger, a light coat settling over every spare surface of her heart.

His eyebrows shot up, eyes gliding away, his nose twitching and mouth tightening as if holding back.

Squaring her shoulders, Suzanne decided to make this easy for him. God only knew why. “My law firm is handling the estate of deceased billionaire Harold Hopewell. You’ve been named in his will.” She tapped the thick envelope in his hand. “These papers explain everything.”

“Explain what?”

“You’re his heir. One of them, at least.”
