Synopsis
Dr. Bethany Morrison is used to being the responsible one. The serious doctor everyone relies on. She isn’t used to needing a rescue–especially from a sexy, lighthearted firefighter like Nate Prudhoe. And yet ever since she moved to Lost Harbor, Alaska, he’s been there for her. Is it any wonder she turns to him in her most embarrassing moment—when she needs a fake boyfriend?

Nate’s more than aware that Bethany doesn’t take him seriously. And that’s fine; relationships, a family of his own…those things aren’t for him. Not when he knows how painful the loss of a loved one can be. But when he discovers a mysterious injured runaway hiding out in the firehouse, it’s his turn to ask the lovely doctor for help.

As winter closes in, the line between fake and forever keeps disappearing. How could Nate know that every moment spent with Bethany would chip away at the shield around his heart? How could Bethany guess that Nate’s brand of laid-back fun was exactly what she needed? It may take more than a snowstorm to make them see it’s okay to want it all…and to grab it before it disappears forever.

Excerpt
Nate could still remember the call that had come in around ten o’clock that night. The dispatcher had been taking a cigarette break, so Nate had been the lucky one to field the call.

“This is going to sound ridiculous, but I just moved in and a squirrel came into my house and I was trying to chase it outside and then there was a moose and, well, long story short but I locked myself out, and I haven’t made duplicate keys yet so I don’t have a way to get inside.”

The woman had sounded out of breath and rattled—not unusual for calls to the firehouse.

“I’ll be right there. Where are you located?”

She rattled off the address, which was within walking distance. But instead of walking, he hopped in one of the department vehicles. He didn’t want to freak out a newcomer by showing up without something official-looking.

When he arrived at the house, which he recognized as a rental often leased by hospital staff, he didn’t see anyone waiting for him. Had she found a way inside? An open window or something?

“Hello, I’m from the fire department,” he called. “Anyone here?”

Then the alders rustled and someone jumped into view. A woman with wet hair and a towel wrapped around her body picked her way barefoot across the grass. She shivered in the late August night air. In one hand she held a plunger and in the other a cell phone.

“Hi. This is extremely embarrassing, but I happened to be in the shower when the squirrel came in and…”

He held up his hand. “No explanation needed.” His gaze strayed to the toilet plunger. “Although that…”

“I was in the bathroom, it was the only thing on hand.” She waved it at him. “It worked on the squirrel.”

He glanced at her other hand. “And you just happened to have your cell phone with you?”

“That’s the only lucky part. While I was chasing the squirrel, I saw a moose right outside the window.” She gestured toward the bushes along one side of her house. “I’ve been wanting to get a good moose photo ever since I got here, so I grabbed my phone. The plunger is in case he attacked me.”

“Word of advice, never try to fight a moose with a plunger,” he said gravely.

Even with just the light from the front porch, he could see her flush. “Yes, I…can you just…maybe just get my door open?”

He showed her the tool he’d brought, which might or might not work on the front door. “I may have to pry open a window if this doesn’t work. Do you want to sit in the car while I work on it? Heater’s going.”

“That’s okay. I’ve never been in a police car before.”

“It’s not technically a police car, it just looks like one. I’m a firefighter. One of only three staff firefighters in town. Mostly we’re a volunteer department.”

She gestured with the plunger again. “Can you just…”

“Of course.” He strode to the door and inserted the pick. “I can tell you’re new around here because a lot of people in Lost Harbor don’t even lock their doors. Some don’t even have locks to start with.”

“That’s crazy. I could never live like that.” She shivered again.

“Are you sure you don’t want to wait in the car? I promise not to arrest you unless you use that plunger inappropriately.”

She finally let go of the plunger and propped it against the front steps. “I’m a doctor.”

“Okay.” He wasn’t sure why she felt compelled to mention that.

“I got straight A’s all the way through college. I don’t usually make boneheaded mistakes like locking myself out of my house.”

“Well, pobody’s nerfect.”

“Excuse me?”

“Things happen. Don’t beat yourself up about it.”

“That advice sounds good, but is it really? That’s how I got through med school, by beating myself up.”

“Suit yourself, then.” He wiggled the pick in the lock. “Hey, I left my jacket in the backseat if you want to grab that.”

She padded across the lawn to the car and used one hand to hold her towel together while she opened the door with the other. When she returned, she wore his navy blue Lost Harbor Fire Department jacket over the towel, which made for an interesting—and surprisingly sexy—look.

He ignored that fact and focused on the lock.

“Where’s the squirrel? In the house or out?” he asked as he felt the tumblers give way.

“I’m not actually sure,” she admitted. “I thought I chased him out, but it was all a blur.”

“Understandable. All right, you might want to step back.”

She didn’t budge. “Why?”

He shrugged and opened the door.

A ball of fur streaked between her legs. She shrieked and lost her balance. He reached out to grab her before she hit the ground, and her towel fell away. Luckily, she still wore his jacket, which covered her all the way to her upper thighs.

Windmilling her arms in the air, she crashed into him and the next thing he knew, he was tumbling backwards. She was falling too, and by instinct, he grabbed her so he’d land first, with her on top.

Which was how he found himself sprawled on the grass with a naked stranger on top of him.

Aubrey opened the gift box slowly, surprised to find a black and gold lipstick container.

“Oh my gosh.” Presley snagged the gift and inspected it. “Yup. Tom Ford’s Original Sin. You’ve got yourself a classy dirty boy.”

“Give me that.” Aubrey grabbed the lipstick and set it on the desk. She lifted another note from the box and read it. “‘Because putting on lipstick usually leads to taking these off.’” She shot a look at her friends. “This ought to be good.” She whipped off the lid, and her body tingled at the sight of a black lace thong and matching bra nestled within the tissue paper.

“Wow. Those are gorgeous,” Libby said. “May I?”

Aubrey shrugged and held out the box for Libby to feel the material.

“That’s Agent Provocateur,” Presley said as she admired the lingerie. “It’s made with French lace. Gorgeous. The man has—”

“Invaded my personal space and my privacy.” Aubrey snapped the lid back on the box, trying to ignore her racy thoughts of Knox tearing them off her.

“And I’m about to invade it even more.”

They all spun around at the sound of Knox’s deep, sexy voice. There he stood, six-plus feet of gorgeousness, clad in a black leather jacket, jeans, and black boots that probably cost more than Aubrey’s desk. A charming smile lifted his lips as he said, “Hello, ladies.”

Synopsis
A box of love letters from the past may hold the key to the future…

Jamie always adored True Love Bookstore and Café, and now she’s the owner. But businesses are struggling in her small town, and her beloved store is threatened by a new retail development scheme.

Sawyer, Jamie’s former high school sweetheart, startles her when he comes to town for the first time in fifteen years. She soon learns he’s the architect of the proposed development and he’s there to sell local business owners on his plan. Sawyer had no idea that Jamie had bought the bookstore and poured everything she had into it. If he takes it over, he’ll break her heart a second time.

Jamie’s discovery of a box of old love letters and valentines might hold the key to saving her shop. And after all this time, could love be in the cards for Jamie and Sawyer, too?

 ————————————————————————————-

Excerpt:
Sawyer’s gaze locked onto hers, and as much as Jamie knew she should look away, she just couldn’t. The lines around his eyes were new, as were the sharp angles of his jawline, but those warm brown irises of his were exactly the same. These were the eyes that had seen her at a time when no one else had. She’d been nothing but a quiet, book-loving dreamer, and he’d brought her out of her shell and shown her that the world could be every bit as colorful and vibrant in reality as it was in the novels she loved so much.

Meeting Sawyer O’Dell had changed her. He’d helped her become the woman she was today, because she’d loved the person he’d seen when he’d looked at her with those eyes—interesting, enchanting.

His.

What would it be like to feel that way again? To be loved and cherished by the only person she’d ever truly wanted to build a life with? To have her heart put back together by the man who’d broken it when he’d been just a boy?

The thought was intoxicating. It made her do things she knew she shouldn’t—like step closer to him so that their breath mingled together in the evergreen air, causing her to smile to herself as his gaze drifted slowly, purposefully to her lips. Her breath hitched as he dipped his head. She’d never wanted a kiss so badly in her life— not even when she’d been sixteen years old and he’d bent toward her in the exact same way for the very first time.

His hand was on her waist and his lips were just a whisper away—a heartbeat, a breath, a memory. And Jamie’s heart felt as if it were opening like a favorite book, one whose pages hadn’t been read in a long, long time. She let her eyes drift closed, because she knew this story by heart. The story of Sawyer and Jamie…

The story of us.

But in the sliver of a second before their lips met, someone said Jamie’s name, and the book slammed shut.

“Jamie?”

Her eyes flew open. She and Sawyer blinked at each other, as if they couldn’t quite get their bearings. Then they both turned their heads in the direction of the speaker.

No. Jamie’s stomach tied itself into a knot. It couldn’t be him. What on earth was he doing there?

She bit her bottom lip, still tingling from the missed opportunity. She’d been waiting fifteen years to kiss Sawyer O’Dell again, and apparently, she’d have to wait even longer.

“Matt?”

Excerpt #1
“Okay, I’ll leave you with your movies, but,” she said, emphasizing the word, “you have to promise you won’t watch one where the girl gets back with her crappy ex.”

“No promises,” I said, loading up my fork with another giant heap of macaroni. “I love second-chance romances.”

She shook her head. “Uh-uh, it will give you too many ideas. Contrary to your life motto, life isn’t a rom-com. Promise me you’ll pick something else to watch.”

I wanted to argue the merits of living life as a romantic comedy, but I didn’t have it in me. Right now, my life was anything but romantic. Instead I just agreed with her. “All right. I promise.”

We said our goodbyes, and I resumed scrolling through my movie choices. Between the streaming networks and all the movies I bought, I had quite the impressive selection. Even if I ignored all the second-chance romances, there were tons of other tropes to choose from. Friends to lovers, secret romance, falling for a royal, pretend relationships . . .

I gasped.

The last one caused the tiniest sliver of an idea to form.

A bad idea. A really bad idea.

An idea Terri would positively hate, but an idea that could be my answer to everything. An idea that kept growing and growing and was now going full steam throughout my head and taking over my entire being.

What if I really did try to live in a rom-com? Date someone else to make my ex jealous, and maybe, possibly, hopefully, fall for the new guy. I’d watched it happen on-screen and read it in books hundreds of times.

Or, at the very least, maybe I’d rile up Marc so much, he’d come running back. This could work. Yeah, Terri was going to kill me, but it was worth a try.

I deserved the senior year I’d dreamed about.

I was going to find someone so much better than Marc and rub his face in it. I was going to get into Columbia and live my dream New York life. I was going to get my happily-ever-after. I might even find love.

But most of all, I was going to make Marc regret dumping me.

Excerpt #3
If I thought sitting in the car together was intimate, it was nothing compared to sitting side by side in a dark theater. Even though we were alone then and we’re surrounded by people now, there’s something about sitting here in the dark with parts of our bodies touching, albeit in an innocent way. If I moved my pinky just the tiniest bit to the left, it would brush Zack’s.

Now it’s all I can think about. My hand twitches despite my attempts to keep it still, and my pinky rubs against Zack’s. He gives a small jolt, as if I shocked him. I almost yank my arm back, and even consider sitting on my hand to prevent myself from further contact. But then I realize Zack hasn’t shifted away. He hasn’t looked at me, either. It makes me wonder if he’s as aware of me as I am of him. That’s ridiculous, though. Isn’t it?

A second later, his pinky brushes mine. The barest hint of a smile flirts around his mouth. He must know I’m watching him, yet his eyes stay trained on the screen ahead. Our pinkies are doing a little dance now, tentatively rubbing against each other until his finally hooks around mine, holding on. That giddy teenager feeling I sometimes get when I’m around Zack returns full force. Our pinkies stay locked together, reminding me of the pinky promises my brother and I used to make. Except those were innocent fun, something we used to swear by over silly things, and this…this feels anything but innocent or silly. It’s the barest contact, and yet it feels weighty.

Zack’s head turns slowly and he finally looks at me. The scene on the screen changes to an outdoor shot, momentarily lighting his features, giving me a short yet perfect view of the soft, almost questioning smile on Zack’s face.

“You’re missing the movie,” he whispers.

I almost tell him I’d rather look at him anyway. Instead, I nod once and return my attention to the screen. I have no idea what’s been happening and my mind is too muddled to even care. I feel Zack’s eyes on me for a moment longer before he looks back at the screen. Our hands stay as they are for the rest of the movie.

When the four of us emerge from the auditorium, blinking in the light like a quartet of moles, Dee asks, “So what did you think?”

I catch Zack’s gaze. “New favorite.”

His lips twitch. “Same. Great movie. Solid four stars.”

Dee arches a brow as she glances between the two of us. I wonder what my expression is. I feel slightly flushed, which means my cheeks are probably rosy. Can she tell I’m barely containing a goofy smile?

Synopsis
FALLING IN LOVE ISN’T COMPLICATED…UNLESS IT’S WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

A close, easygoing friendship can all change with just one kiss. Seventeen-year-old Remi Beaufort learns this the hard way when she plays a blindfolded kissing game at a party.

She thinks she’s kissing Jeremy, the totally hot basketball player she’s been crushing on. And the kiss…it’s amazing. Heart-stopping, world-changing, toe-curling. The kiss makes her forget about her overbearing mother, the next-door neighbor’s drama, and the probability that she’ll fail her senior year. The best kiss of her life makes all that fall away.

Until her blindfold falls off, and she realizes that instead of kissing her crush, she’s kissing Elijah, her best friend since third grade.

Though she manages to convince Elijah that he was kissing his girlfriend, Remi can’t get the thought of his lips on hers out of her head. As things between them grow more and more complicated—because it turns out her fantasizing about his mouth is more of a problem than it sounds—Remi has to make a choice: does she live the rest of her life loving her best friend in secret? Or does she tell the truth and risk ruining their friendship forever?

Heart-melting and romantic, What Are Friends For? is a swoon-worthy best-friends-to-lovers story that will leave you crushing hard.

Excerpt #3
I couldn’t help thinking about the deeper things, too. The way he touched his lips when he was nervous, or how if he laughed too loudly, he covered his mouth. Or when he was sculpting something with clay, entirely in the zone, he’d start to subconsciously smile, like he couldn’t help it.

Those were the kind of things that girlfriends noticed because they were close enough to. Not best friends. It felt strange, noticing these things now, and all I wanted to do was find more little things about him, to know every freckle and mark on his body personally.

Elijah’s lips spread into a wide grin as he sat back in his chair, and for a sharp, fearful moment, I thought I had spoken aloud. “Ha, you blinked. I win.”

THE GAME CHANGER (Parkwood Mysteries #1) by Jennifer Brown

5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
Hollis and Daisy love podcasting about murder cases…But can they solve one?

Hollis Bisbee used to be a big-city crime reporter. Now, she’s a small-town journalist, and she’s bored. She and a young mom, talented baker Daisy Mueller, start the Knock ‘Em Dead podcast—”Where murder and muffins meet!” It’s all fun, games, and baking tips until murder comes to Parkwood.

After a brutal homecoming game loss, the coach of the rival football team is the victim of a hit-and-run in the high school parking lot. The entire town is on edge, and the star quarterback—who happens to be the police chief’s son—may just look the guiltiest of all.

With Hollis’s investigative skills and Daisy’s famous muffins…and in spite of the charming rookie police officer tasked with keeping Hollis out of the way…the podcasting duo sets out to solve their first real case.

This cozy mystery includes a killer free recipe for Daisy’s Cherry Chocolate Chunk Muffins.

 —————————————————————————-

My Review
OMG! How much do I love this book? Soooooo much! Seriously, this is just the thing I needed to help break up my post-holiday blahs. Hollis Bisbee is a reporter of a tiny newspaper in Parkwood, Missouri. She writes about hotdog rollers and new vacuum stores in the local mall. A former crime reporter in Chicago, to say her job lacks the excitement she’s used to would be a gross understatement. While interviewing the snack bar supervisor at Friday night’s big high school homecoming football game, an altercation occurs on the field between the Parkwood quarterback and the opposing team’s coach. When not long after the game, said coach ends up dead in the Parkwood High parking lot, things get a little sticky for Hollis and her best friend, Daisy, who have a true crime murder podcast that is equal parts macabre and munchies, since Daisy is also the best baker in town and uses the platform to help promote her baking business. And when Hollis discovers the quarterback is also the sheriff’s son, and the death has been ruled natural causes, Hollis has had enough of her feel good pieces and drags Daisy into an investigation that the sheriff, the new local hunky deputy, and her boss, the paper’s editor, can’t catch wind of.

Plot
The primary plot is the murder mystery and it’s exceptional. There were so many red herrings, I got to the point where I suspected it was going to be a MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS ending. There are a few minor subplots including Hollis’s job and a budding romance with Office Blue Eyes, but they were just there to round out the main plot. This was such a fun ride, I’m anxiously awaiting more Parkwood Mysteries!

Characters
The characters are THE best! I would read anything with Hollis and Daisy in it. They’re both hysterical, witty, charming, and definitely the kind of people you’d hang out with in real life if they weren’t just figments of Brown’s imagination. Maybe I just need to hang out with the author in real life! Hollis is amazing as the spirited reporter who refuses to take no for an answer. Her bff and sidekick, Daisy, is a stay-at-home mom to like 32 kids. Entire scenes are devoted to her chewing out one kid after another as she still manages to carry on a coherent conversation with Hollis. She’s quick on her feet and helps Hollis out more than a few tight spaces. The rest of the cast, including Officer Hopkins, with his muscles and impossibly blue eyes, are just as warm and loveably quirky as Hollis and Daisy. If Hallmark makes this into a movie or a TV show, I’m all in.

What I Loved About THE GAME CHANGER
1. Everything.
Seriously, I can’t find any fault with this book. The story, the characters, the writing, everything is top notch.

2. Hollis. She’s funny, smart, endearing, and tenacious.

3. Daisy. The best BFF ever and the type of person we all want in our lives.

4. The Mystery. Really well done. One of the best I’ve read in the genre in a long time.

5. Podcasting. My co-author and I have been toying with the idea of starting a pod cast in the near future, but nothing we come up with will ever be as good as the Hollis and Daisy show.

Bottom Line
An absolutely adorable cozy mystery with a sweet romance and some of the best damn characters in the book world.

Synopsis
Piper

Most people don’t think about the day they’ll die. They coast through life, blissfully unaware of how their time is ticking away. I wasn’t like most people. I welcomed death, wanted her to take me away from the prison I called life, but she refused. I tried twice only to survive. And then, when I thought I had nothing left it came.

A reason to live.

Rex was a small, unexpected ray of light my world of darkness that blossomed into a beam of sunshine. I thought, maybe this was why Death didn’t take me. Maybe she knew that if I held on a little longer things would turn around. But the third time Death came to my door wasn’t by choice. Someone else brought her, and I fear this time she might take me.

Rex

Being the son of a country star sucks. My parents are never around, I move every year or so, and I have no real friends. Everyone around me has an agenda. Everyone except Piper Lovelace. I can’t get that girl to notice me. Trust me I’ve tried.
Thankfully, fate stepped in and gave me the break I needed. I’ve got her attention, now I need her to give me a chance.

Excerpt #2:
Everything about Rex is too good to be true. Sooner or later, the hat will drop and the way he’s got me feeling, I’m not gonna land on my feet. “If you keep hanging out with me, Rex, people are gonna start talking.”

He shrugs, slipping his hand in mine. He brings my palm to his lips and plants a featherlight kiss on my knuckles. “They already are. I don’t care what anyone thinks, Piper. I like you.”

“You shouldn’t.” The words taste like crow because I want Rex to like me. Goodness, I want him to like me. “Whatever this is between us, it will only end in heartbreak.”

Young Adult Book Review + Giveaway – HOW TO SPEAK BOY by Tiana Smith

HOW TO SPEAK BOY Blog Tour

HOW TO SPEAK BOY by Tiana Smith

HOW TO SPEAK BOY by Tiana Smith

4 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
Two sworn enemies start to fall in love through anonymous notes in How to Speak Boy, a fun and charming YA novel from Tiana Smith.

Quinn and Grayson have been fierce speech and debate rivals for years. They can’t stand one another, either in competition or in real life.

But when their AP Government teacher returns their school assignments to the wrong cubbies, they begin exchanging anonymous notes without knowing who the other one is.

Despite their differences, the two come together through their letters and find themselves unknowingly falling for the competition. Before the state tournament, the two of them need to figure out what they want out of life, or risk their own future happiness. After all, what’s the point of speech and debate if you can’t say what’s in your heart?

 —————————————————————————-

My Review
Quinn is serious, hardworking, and in desperate need of a little fun, but she’s vying for President of the Speech and Debate Club against her arch nemesis, the utterly swoon-worthy Grayson, so fun isn’t on the agenda. She’s as competitive as she is smart, but unfortunately, nothing comes easy to Quinn. She has to work twice as hard as Grayson to be successful, or so she believes. That makes it hard for her to let her guard down around him. Even though he’s adorably perfect. Quinn’s two closest friends, Naomi and Carter, have their own ideas about Grayson. Naomi is pro-romance and Carter is dead-set against it. Apparently Grayson has a reputation of sorts and wants to protect Quinn. But the more time that passes, the more it becomes clear that Carter has an ulterior motive in keeping Quinn and Grayson apart. Underlying it all is a mysterious student who Quinn corresponds with the old fashioned way — pen to paper. With three boys vying for her interests, she’s not sure where to turn or who she can really trust.

Plot
The main plot is the romance between Quinn and Grayson, but there are a number of subplots that involve Quinn’s college future, the mysterious letter writer, her speech performance at the state finals, and her relationship with Carter. All expertly weave into the main plot to drive conflict and up the stakes. Although the reader knows who the letter writer is, well, if they read the synopsis, it’s fun watching Quinn try to figure it out. But it also adds an element of wanting to see if they’re just going to tell each other, that made turning the page to see what would happen compelling. While it did take me a good few chapters to really get into this story, because I’ll admit, speech and debate didn’t interest me in the least, once I was invested int he characters, I was all in to the story. So don’t let this aspect of the plot detract you from picking up this really awesome book.

Characters
The characters are what I loved most about the book. Quinn is so relatable as an awkward teen who strives to do her best in everything, but keeps coming up short. Her growth comes across as authentic and organic. Her BFF, Naomi is the everything Quinn’s not but wishes she was, making her the perfect sidekick. Carter was a little annoying, but necessary. Not every character needs to be likable, and who doesn’t know at least on Carter? Grayson was adorable as the self-assured son of the the Governor who seems to have everything he’s ever wanted, but underlying it all is a vulnerability that only adds to his attractiveness.

What I Enjoyed About HOW TO SPEAK BOY
1. Quinn.
She’s adorkably awkward and utterly endearing. I couldn’t help rooting for her.

2. Grayson. He’s sweet, smart, and hot. The perfect BBF.

3. Quinn’s Mom. I love their relationship. She’s the proper blend of confidant and authoritarian, just what Quinn needs, when she needs her to be.

4. Letter Writing. In a digital world, it was a refreshing throwback to my own high school days.

5. Speech and Debate. Okay, so I’m still not sure I’d ever join this club or find going to these events interesting, but the way the author wrote about these moments, definitely piqued my interest.

What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
The story and characters were amazing and I loved the speech angle. But the ending fell flat for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a HFN ending, but I didn’t have quite the bang I was hoping for, what I felt it was building up to. That said, the author wraps everything up in a satisfying conclusion.

Bottom Line
A cute contemporary romance with adorable characters you can’t help pulling for.

Synopsis
You win some, you lose some.

Back at home with half a college degree after the fiasco of the century sent her packing, it’s safe to say that Renee Nyobé is losing some. She’s a hot mess, and not the cute kind. No, if hot messes had categories, hers would be ‘littering the stairs of the metro station with your sweaty underwear because you were too busy rushing to the job interview you’re already late for to zip up your yoga bag.’

A job—any job—is just what she needs to get her life back on track, and it might as well be at Montreal’s most famous dive bar, Taverne Toulouse.

Dylan Trottard is winning some. As Taverne Toulouse’s new manager, he’s got one rule for himself: don’t screw up. Following that rule gets a lot harder when the woman he’s spent the past three years trying to forget starts working behind the bar.

They were never supposed to want each other, and they sure as hell aren’t supposed to want each other now. She’s the girl that got away before he even had her, and he’s the guy she didn’t think would ever give her a second glance.

Now they can’t keep their eyes off one another, and the stakes are even higher than before. There’s a lot to lose, but as the pull between them gets harder and harder to ignore, Renee and Dylan start asking how much winning is worth.

Glass Half Full is part of the Barflies series, a set of standalone romantic comedies that chronicle the lives and loves of the staff at a Montreal dive bar.

Excerpt #2
“I always wondered something,” she continues when it’s clear I can’t speak. “That night, did you…Were you…Did you want to kiss me?”

I wanted to do more than kiss her. I wanted to breathe her in. I wanted to inhale her.

“It would have been a bad idea,” I manage to get out through my clenched jaw. She’s staring up at me through those damn eyelashes, and all I can think about is her mouth, her neck, that inch of her gorgeous bare shoulders I can see before they meet with the edge of her coat.

“I’m glad you didn’t.”

Everything grinds to a halt.

Shit, shit, shit.

“I’m glad you didn’t,” she repeats, “because I wasn’t ready for you to kiss me then, not like I am now.

THE MOVE Teaser

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt #3
“What’s goin’ on with you? You’re acting as jumpy as a bullfrog during hunting season.” I have to stop and think about that one. I’m not sure why a bullfrog would be jumpy during hunting season unless you were hunting bullfrogs. Oh, my god, do they eat frogs down here? I involuntarily shudder at the thought.

I ignore his question. When we reach the third floor, I say again, “No need to walk me to the door.”

He ignores me now and trails after me. Once we get to Bertie’s door, I thank Beau for what I hope is the final time. “Goodnight, and thanks again.” I sound more annoyed than grateful.

He still doesn’t seem to be ready to walk away. Instead, he turns me so I’m facing him. What I see in his eyes makes my knees go so weak I almost keel over. He pulls me closer, and as his mouth hovers a mere whisper above mine, he tells me in a low voice, “I had a wonderful day, Lexi. Thank you very much.”

Then, hand to God, the man leans down and kisses me so tenderly, so heart-meltingly, I forget to be outraged and pull away, or smack him for his impertinence. Instead, I lean into him and encourage him. It is the best, most tantalizing kiss I’ve ever been party to in my whole life, and it’s all I can do not to jump into his arms and devour him whole.

The encounter lasts for a very long time. It begins as a peck, turns the corner on a respectable first date smooch, and quickly enters territory that I’m sure is full of signs that read Danger! Violators Will be Towed! and Trespassers Will be Shot! On and on it goes and I do nothing to stop it. In fact, it’s Beau who finally pulls away.

When he does, we’re leaning on each other with both of us panting for more. He finally manages to say, “Come down to the office at nine in the morning and we’ll drive over to the house together for the inspection.”

I make this sort of grunting, growling sound that’s meant to mean, “okay,” but I’m not sure it’s successful. Beau takes the keys out of my hands and opens the door for me. Then he kisses me again, quicker this time, before turning to walk back down the hall.

I have no idea what just happened. Well, I mean, I know what happened, but I don’t know why I allowed it to happen. I don’t believe in fooling around with someone who’s already taken, so I need to make sure whatever it was, there isn’t a repeat performance.

If Regina’s taught me one thing, it’s that women are a sisterhood, and we owe it to one another to have each other’s backs, no matter what kind of temptation Beau Frothingham is. And while I know this in my bones, my imagination takes flight, and it only occurs to me later that I am not angry at Beau one little bit. What does that mean? More destiny at play in the universe or just my fantasies taking flight?

Synopsis
She thinks meeting him must’ve been fate. It wasn’t.

Claire, a pastry chef struggling to make her restaurant succeed, is too busy to pursue romance. That doesn’t stop her loving but meddling mother, Helen, from setting her up on dates. Even after Helen promises to stop her matchmaking efforts, she can’t help herself. She convinces Eric, a pediatrician, to meet Claire at a gallery event.

Eric and Claire feel an immediate connection, and their meeting becomes a magical first date. But the longer Eric and Claire see each other, the less comfortable Eric feels about hiding the fact that Claire’s mom set them up. Meanwhile, Claire loves to talk about how she trusts Eric, and how they met by chance. How will she react to the truth?

This witty, sweet romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Claire’s Coconut Lime Tarts.

Excerpt #3
The genteel gallery crowd wandered through the maze of stark-white walls viewing the artwork, their conversation muted and indiscern- ible. Claire didn’t have to hear their comments about the paintings. The only thing she cared about was whether they liked her desserts, and judging by the low inventory on every tray, they did.

The gallery director, a high-strung woman by the name of Brenda Chang, jetted over, her straight dark hair swinging wildly. She surveyed the table as if try- ing to gauge whether there were enough to last—and there were, thank you, because the caterer knew how to do her job—then nodded at Claire.

“I wish the event was as big a hit as your desserts. I’ll gain five pounds if I don’t watch myself,” Brenda said.

Claire smiled at the compliment. “Well, I’m glad you like them. I also have a restaurant downto—”

“Hold that thought.” Brenda darted after one of the patrons, an elderly lady encrusted with diamonds. Too bad Brenda hadn’t motioned the woman in this direction. Claire’s bakery could use a wealthy fan or two.

She glanced past Brenda, her gaze landing on the man behind her. A sudden jolt rocked her spine. The same jolt she’d gotten before, but this time she knew she recognized him.

Time slid to a stop, and the people, the artwork, the chatter, all of it, faded as he walked toward her, his gaze similarly fastened on her. There was practically music playing in her head. Okay, well, there really was music piping from the sound system, but somehow he made it a whole other kind of moment, one full of magic and fairytale glitter.

“Hi,” he murmured, and his voice… Oh, yes, his voice was amazing and deep and it thrilled through her, raising goosebumps in its wake.

“Hi.” How she got that out around the huge, sudden lump in her throat, she’d never know.

It’s the guy. The one from Crate and Barrel. And here he was in the flesh, talking to her and even better-looking in the low gallery light in a crisp suit that looked amazing on him. She might have to find a way to surreptitiously fan herself, because wow

“So, how’s your night going?” he asked.

“Good.” Fabulous, she wasn’t squeaking out her answers like a squirrel with stage fright. He held out a hand. “I’m Eric.” “Claire.” She shook his hand, and everything inside her collided in a mess of destiny, squishy-girl feelings that only happened when you met someone worth squish- ing over, and a giddy sense of wonder. Providence had finally smiled down on her. This was a moment she’d remember for a long time.

To wrap everything up in a big, solid bow, he seemed to have come to the fundraiser alone and didn’t seem to be in any hurry to go elsewhere.

“Are you an art aficionado?” he asked with a nod toward the wall behind that held a very ugly Robachaux painting from what appeared to be the artist’s messy finger-paint period, inexplicably titled “Eggplant with No Fur.”

“Do I lose points if I say the jury is still out?” Eric’s smile came slowly but it was worth it, like waiting for the sun to break out from behind the clouds. The intensity of it washed over her. She’d always been a rain girl—had to be, to live in this town—but all at once, she became a huge fan of Eric’s warm rays.

“Actually, I’ve been glancing around and I gotta say…” He leaned in, wafting her with a heavy dose of masculinity she couldn’t help but react to, and murmured, “You’re wise to withhold judgement until you’ve seen all of it. Want to walk around with me and let’s decide together?”

She couldn’t help it. She shivered. The good kind, the kind full of anticipation, like when you knew the wrapped box in front of you held the present you’d longed for, but you hadn’t opened it yet because want- ing it was too much fun.

Unfortunately, she wasn’t a guest. “I can’t. I’m the caterer, so I’m kind of stuck here. I can circulate with trays, but my time is limited.”

Which was exactly the way she wanted it. The tiny ping of disappointment had no place in the middle of a gig that had bought her and Marco a new oven.

His intense gaze never wavered from hers. “I’ll wait.”Really? Like, how long? Until the event was done? “That might be a while. At least until all of the des- serts are gone.”

“Well. That sounds like a challenge.”

A sex tutor.

Excerpt #3
I roll my shoulders and take a few deep breaths as I stare at the door to Elizabeth’s apartment Tuesday night. It doesn’t stop my heart from racing. For the first time ever in my life I’m fucking nervous about a girl.

Man up, Jacobs.

I knock on her door. She seems surprised when she answers it.

“Hi,” she mutters, staring at me quizzically. I guess she was expecting me to saunter in again like I own the place.

I don’t own her and it’s important I remember that. No more playing boyfriend. Tonight I’m going to keep things flirty and casual.

“Hi,” I reply, waiting to be asked into the apartment. I let my eyes wander over her. She’s back in her baggy jeans, but she isn’t wearing the standard loose T-shirt. She’s in a tight tank top that’d give even Stevie Wonder a chance to admire how well-endowed she is.

The lettering stretched across her chest reads, “Sorry I’m late. I didn’t want to come.” That sounds like Elizabeth. It’s adorable and sexy all in one. The thirteen-year-old in me wants to bury my face in her tits, motorboating until I can’t breathe. The twenty-one-year-old in me wants to make sure she comes. All. Night. Long.

“Hi,” she says again, biting her lip with a coy smile. This girl is casually delectable.

“You said that already,” I simper. “Can I come in? Or did you add voyeurism to our sex-abus?”

She gives me a light gasp and an incredulous look before grabbing my shirt and pulling me into the apartment. She closes the door, crosses her arms, and glares at me. I can’t help but chuckle. She’s beautiful when she’s pissed.

About the Author
Amelia Kingston is many things, the most interesting of which are probably California girl, writer, traveler, and dog mom. She survives on chocolate, coffee, wine, and sarcasm. Not necessarily in that order.

She’s been blessed with a patient husband who’s embraced her nomad ways and traveled with her to over 30 countries across 5 continents (I’m coming for you next, Antarctica!). She’s also been cursed with an impatient (although admittedly adorable) terrier who pouts when her dinner is 5 minutes late.

She writes about strong, stubborn, flawed women and the men who can’t help but love them. Her irreverent books aim to be silly and fun with the occasional storm cloud to remind us to appreciate the sunny days. As a hopeless romantic, her favorite stories are the ones that remind us all that while love is rarely perfect, it’s always worth chasing.

I change the subject, asking, “What’s your major?”

“Pre-med.” Her eyes practically sparkle with her response.

“You want to be a doctor?” I can’t keep the surprise out of my voice, unable to picture her bedside manner.

“Technically, I guess. But I am really looking at going into medical research.” She answers my question without me having to ask it.

“Why medical research?”

She balks at the question, picking imaginary lint off her T-shirt instead of answering me. I sit quietly and stare at her until she finally answers with, “I’ve just always thought biology was interesting.” I give her a go-on gesture and she meekly continues. “Humans are basically insanely complex machines that took hundreds of thousands of years of evolution to create. We’re just starting to understand that even though we are these complicated and sophisticated organisms, we’re all still so fragile and flawed.” She stares as her hands in her lap, embarrassed by her own enthusiasm.

“That’s almost poetic.”

She shifts in her seat and says, “It’s really lame, I know. I’m such a nerd, right?

“Don’t do that.” Her eyes snap to mine at the reprimand. “Don’t belittle yourself or what you care about. The world is going to beat you down enough, you don’t need to help it out. If you believe something, own it. Fuck everybody else.” She blinks several times, like she’s holding back tears, gazing at me like I saved a litter of puppies from a burning building. Now it’s my turn to shift awkwardly in my seat. I’m no one’s hero. I change the subject, “I just want to make money. Lots of it.”

“There’s a lot more to life than money.”

“Spoken like someone who has a lot of it,” I scoff. “Exactly how rich are you, anyway?”

“I’m not rich.” She sounds almost offended. “I mean, my father has money, but—”

I interrupt her. “Same difference. You have lots of brothers and sisters?”

“No. It’s just me.” Her face goes squishy, eyebrows pinched together, lips scrunched to one side. Her eyes dart up and left, like she’s trying to see inside her own mind. She’s working out what I’m getting at. It’s hideously captivating.

“You’re the only child of a rich man. I bet if you decided tomorrow you never wanted to work another day in your life you wouldn’t have to.” She seems lost in thought. I can’t help but wonder if she’s actually adding up her net worth in her head.

“It never occurred to me not to work. That’s just what people do. But I guess you’re right. If I didn’t want to, I wouldn’t have to work.” She isn’t bragging. If anything, she seems a bit self-conscious about being wealthy, like she thinks it will make me see her differently. I’m surprised by her honesty.

“Yep, hate to break it to you, sweetheart. But you’re rich,” I confirm with a laugh.

“I’ve never really thought about it,” she says softly, almost to herself. It sounds like it’s a revelation to her.

She’s so naïve. She’s never really experienced life, the good or the bad. She lives a sheltered beige existence, never knowing the brilliant shine of intense pleasure or the dark grunge of true suffering. She’s only tasted a fraction of what the world has to offer. Her unassuming innocence is intriguing.

“About money? People who have lots of it rarely do.” I don’t mean it to be an accusation, but that’s how she takes it.

“It’s not like I’m taking my private jet to our family’s island in the Bahamas.” Her definition of being rich is enough to make me laugh. She’s rich because she’ll never have to work to eat.

“Maybe not. But you had five thousand dollars you seemed to be able to part with quite easily.” It comes out harsher than I meant it to be. I’m frustrated she doesn’t understand what it’s like for people with nothing.

People like me.

Synopsis
Their prom night ended in a jail cell with forty of their closest friends. But that’s hardly the worst thing that happened to them…

When the principal announces prom is canceled this year, senior Riley Hart is determined to save it. Armed with little more than her own enthusiasm, she ends up working closely with Owen Locklear, who is more than completely off-limits. Because he’s the boyfriend of her ex-BFF, Catherine Reed. Still, Owen knows Riley better than almost anyone, and his charming ideas for turning the prom upside-down and backward win Riley over.

Catherine is willing to join Owen and Riley on the prom committee, but only because her legacy as prom queen is at stake. She’s already suffocating under the weight of her parents’ expectations for after senior year, and compared to that, ensuring prom happens should be easy. At least until everything starts to go wrong.

First they lose their deposit. Then they book a band full of octogenarians. And lose their venue… Twice.

Riley will have an unforgettable teenage experience, damn it, if it’s the last thing she does…

Excerpt
RILEY – TWO MONTHS UNTIL PROM

I turn the corner and glance over my shoulder, hoping to catch another glimpse of Owen’s familiar dark brown hair poking above the crowd. When I recognize his spiky-messy style, my breath catches in my chest. With a wave to Catherine, he breaks away and trails behind me, leaving half a hallway between us. I veer off into an empty stairwell and wait.

Eventually, he makes his appearance, towering over me in the cramped space. Although he’s not as big as the basketball players, Owen stands at least six inches taller than me, which means I’m always looking up at him when we cross paths in school. We met during recess on the first day of kindergarten, when we decided to join up with Catherine and fight the imaginary monsters hiding under the playground equipment. Years later, Catherine has found other things to do with her free time, but Owen and I still fight monsters together—virtual ones, in our favorite video game.

“Haven’t caught up with you on Q-Chat lately,” he says, breaking into his familiar wide smile, one that could take down the entire cheerleading squad. Though it’s a struggle, I manage to remain upright. But just barely.

“Sorry, but I’ve been busy.” I speak too fast and nearly drop the bag of tech club pamphlets I printed last night. Talking to Owen in real life always seems to throw me off. It’s much easier to pretend I don’t have a crush on him when we’re battling aliens online.

Faking disappointment, he shakes his head. “Priorities, Riley. Immortal Quest released an update yesterday with an all-new army of zombies. They suck your life force away, and I really need your shields for protection.” His blue eyes brighten as he steps closer. “C’mon, Evil Skater Girl.”

I raise my finger to my lips. “Shhh! We promised never to call each other by our Quest names in school!” No one needs to know about my secret virtual superhero persona. At eighteen, I’m practically a grandma in the Immortal Quest world.

“Yeah, you’re right.” He backs away, darting his eyes toward the hallway, probably checking for his girlfriend. “Just…log on once in a while, okay? Keep me company.”

“Doesn’t Catherine do enough of that?” The words rush from my mouth before I think about them. I really don’t want to know what he and Catherine do when they’re alone together, but for some reason I can’t resist bringing her up, if only to remind myself that he’s in love with the girl who tossed me aside without a second thought way back in middle school.

Owen flashes his smile again. “No one does it like you, ESG.” He hikes his backpack higher on his shoulder and turns to go. Before I call him out on the name thing again, he says, “By the way, did you hear anything about prom being canceled?”

“What? Is that even possible?”

He breaks out in a small smile. “According to Cat, it is.” His smile falters before he picks it back up. “So, you haven’t heard anything?”

“No, but if I do, I’ll let you know.”

With a wave, he ducks around the corner and out of sight. I count to ten before continuing on to my locker.

Synopsis
Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
Because Daddy set out traps to catch those f^@kers
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that grenades would soon be in there
The children were nestled, all snug in their beds
While visions of weapons danced in their heads
And Mama in her nightie and I in my boxers
Had just settled down for a fun night together
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my bed to grab my Sig Sauer
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Covered my junk and threw Mama her pants…

“What’s the plan?” Ice asked.

“That’s up to Chance,” I replied. “You plan to get married out of town, where we don’t have every available resource. But I won’t tell you that we can’t do it. Inevitably, it’s up to you.”

“That’s insane,” Alec spat. “We know this guy is coming for us and we’re going to leave ourselves in the open?”

“Or we use it as an opportunity to draw him out,” Chris suggested.

“You want to start a battle at my wedding?” Chance asked.

“Maybe we should-”

“I like it,” Chance grinned. “I mean, if you tell Morgan I said that, I’ll deny the hell out of it. But that sounds like a very…eventful wedding.”

“You can’t be serious,” I said in shock.

“Why not?” Chance shrugged with a little grin. “I mean, Coop’s been in hiding for how long now? I’m sure Cazzo’s ready to put his father-in-law in the ground, and it gives all of us a chance to have a little fun.”

“Hell yeah,” Cazzo grunted.

“You guys are certifiable,” I said in exasperation. “Do you have any idea what kind of planning is required to pull that off?”

“Cap,” Derek grinned, “isn’t that what we’re trained to do?”

“Well, yeah, but this is at someone’s wedding. Our wives will be there. Some of them are pregnant. Do you really want to put them in that kind of danger? Not to mention our kids!”

“The pregnant ladies have to stay behind,” Sinner said.

“Right, I’ll let you tell Maggie that.”

“Maggie’s pregnant?” The shock in his voice matched the paleness of his skin. “Shit, Cap. Why can’t you just keep it in your pants for five f^@king minutes?”

About the Author
I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Using emails sent from beyond the grave, Petter’s father tries to remain a source of guidance and life lessons for his son. Hidden among these teachings are also clues leading Petter out on an adventure. The last one that he would ever have with his father.

Then Petter meets Max. She joins him on his quest and becomes a bright spark of color in a world that moments before seemed very grey.

Excerpt #2
“It’s ALIVE! You awake Norseman?” her text said.

He wrote back, “You do realize that it’s afternoon?”

“Details, details. Yesterday I was an early bird. Today, I prefer to be an owl. Who wants that stupid worm anyways. Early birds can have it!”

“Agreed. Unless they are gummy worms, in which case it pays to be the early bird.”

“True! Wise words indeed. How was your day?”

“Ever have a dream that left you short of breath and drenched in sweat? Well, that’s how my day started out. Short of that, helped Otto move some books, and he actually gave me a book my father gave him. I am still amazed that he did that. Oh yeah, and I got a spam email from my father. Just hope nothing is wrong with his email account.”

“Wow. All that before noon. Let’s get back to the dream in a minute. Forward the email. Let’s make sure that there wasn’t anything fishy about it.”

Petter sent the email to her and lay down on the bed on his side. Someone should really make a keyboard that makes for comfortable in bed use, he thought.

“So, the book,” Max started. “What was it?”

“It’s a translation to English of Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor,” he wrote back.

Petter stretched out on the bed as his screen showed Max typing back. He was stiff from lifting those books up and down the ladder. It had been a while since he worked out. Ever since his dad got sick.

The typing paused and was all of a sudden replaced by a request for a Hangouts video call. Before thinking, Petter had accepted. In front of him, Max with a morning face was scrambling in front of her laptop, furiously typing something.

“Max? You okay?” Petter asked. He had to keep himself from laughing. Her serious face combined with the crazy hair was just too much.

She finally realized that he had accepted and looked up into the camera, seeing from the mirth on his face that she wasn’t really presentable. In a split second, she seemed to go from wondering if she should care to deciding that it wasn’t important.

“Petter. Petter with t’s and lots of r’s. Your dad’s email. It’s not gibberish. Not even spam. It’s a puzzle! A puzzle, my Dear Watson. Your father was a tricky trickster! The email is encoded.”

Synopsis
When a former ugly duckling and the former class heart-throb come together as adults, they find out they have more in common than they realized.

Glenda Shaw knows firsthand what it’s like to be an ugly duckling, and now, she is roped into helping to organize her tenth-year class reunion. The speaker this year is none other than Hunter Teegs, the object of her dreams since their sophomore year in high school. She’s a dedicated social worker with a heart the size of Texas, but her hectic schedule doesn’t allow much time for dating or entertainment.

Hunter Teegs is a self-made financial powerhouse with a boatload of charisma and a winning sense of humor. He’s also a notorious womanizer and heartbreaker. He has no interest in settling down any time soon, if ever. To make matters worse, he has recently noticed details from his childhood that cause him to question everyone and everything he’s come to believe.

When Glenda and Hunter are brought together again, fireworks nearly knock both of them off their feet, and not necessarily in a good way. Glenda knows more than one secret about Hunter, and sharing the most crucial one could mean the end of their relationship before it even gets started.

SECRET ADMIRER'S CHRISTMAS WISH

Excerpt #2
Glenda felt the heat from Hunter’s hand on her lower back. The way he’d looked at her! It astounded her. Yes, she had grown up, but she’d never met anyone recently who’d known her back then. Hunter hadn’t really known her either, he’d just looked at her…once.

His small speech about how this would be good for her? She never looked at it like that before. All she had thought was how humiliating it might be. His reaction swayed her. Maybe.

If he, the most popular guy in school, thought she wouldn’t be humiliated, then maybe she should give it a chance. She did need to get over her stigma, leave the past in the past. After all, that was all she had been doing these last ten years – leaving her geek past behind her. Maybe Hunter was right. Face these people head on and look them right in the eye, show them what she was really made of. Not run away like the shy girl she had been back then.

They went in and walked down the halls while Glenda tried to steady her heartbeat, keep her mind focused on the task at hand instead of getting lost in the myriad of physical and emotional responses just being close to Hunter evoked. Even after ten years, not much had changed, and that not only included the appearance of the school, but her feelings for Hunter. The realization made her uneasy, to say the least, and her back radiated heat where he touched her.

The halls were still lined with Scholar’s Bowl trophies and tributes to former students, and to her surprise, her name was among them.
