Synopsis
Every wallflower blooms at their own perfect time, but some like quirky Lo, take longer than others.

Lo is a sheltered 20-year-old who loves baking, manga/anime, and octopi. When she spots her college swim team’s tryout flyer sporting her favorite sea creature, an octopus she knows it’s a sign that she must join the Flying Octopi. The only things standing her way are her social awkward nature and the fact that she just learned to swim.

Will Lo find her place to shine or will her social anxiety DQ her dreams?

Late Bloomer is a new adult novel that is a cross between Bridget Jones’s Diary, Baywatch and Kuragehime.

My Review
This novel was a breath of fresh air. I love everything about it, from the cover, to the devices the author uses to tell Lo’s story, to the characters that populate the pages. At twenty, Lo is socially awkward on steroids and as inexperienced as an adult as she was in middle school. After a near-drowning experience as a child, she promised her mother she would never go into a pool again. But Lo, being Lo, figured the best way to protect herself was to learn how to swim. So through reading books and researching online, she taught herself how to swim. Now she wants to swim on her college’s swim team. She’s awful, but because she’s determined, the coach gives her a chance. When Lo isn’t studying, swimming, or taking care of her little brother, she’s listening to 90s grunge music. Set in 2003, there’s a lot of great music and movie references to take me back nearly two decades.

Lo balances her life the best way she can, by trying to please everyone. Her family is full-on passive-aggressive, giving her the silent treatment if she displeases them. No wonder she has so many issues with developing normal, healthy interpersonal relationships. But she always manages to regain a positive attitude every time she’s knocked down. Along her journey, she falls for moody Martin, and fellow music lover, but he’s got a girlfriend. Still, she can’t stop the way she feels and when Martin and his girlfriend break up, Lo blurts our her feelings in the most Lo-like way, taking their friendship into awkward territory as only she can.

I fell in love with this character as she deals with helping her brother with his problems at school, with her parents’ financial troubles, her own failing grades, and her up and down relationship/friendship with Martin. I enjoyed watching her crawl into her own person. Author L.M.L. Gil has shot to the top of my list of favorite debut authors. I can’t wait to read more by her.

Plot
The plot is sort of a wandering tale of Lo’s personal growth, with strong romantic elements, and themes of friendship and being there for others. Lo is quirky, and one of her friends, Nick, calls her weirdo, but she takes it all in stride, knowing she’s always been different from other people. She knows she’s socially awkward, and while she would like to be more like her friends, I love her just the way she is. Lo is endearing and sweet, without ever being annoying. Even her friend Britney says, “If you weren’t so cute, you would be annoying,” and that’s the best description of Lo I can think of. I did find her constant need to apologize somewhat disheartening, but when you understand her family, it makes so much sense for who she is. While the book tends to run long at 525 pages, it’s actually a fast read, told over short chapters.

The Characters
We see the characters only through Lo’s innocent eyes. She is such a caring soul, non-judgmental soul, it’s hard to get a true grasp of them, but over time, they all slowly come into focus. They’re all well-developed with rich back stories, even Britney, who at first comes off a bit shallow, but we eventually find out there is even more to her than meets the eye. But Lo steals the show, and one of the things I love most about her, is she is absolutely the last person to see what everyone else knows.

Top Five Things I Loved About THE DIARY OF A LATE BLOOMER
1. Lo. She’s so naive and trusting and wonderful. Her heart is enormous and she loves with everything she is.

2. Swimming. I loved reading about Lo’s time in the pool. I’m not much of a swimmer, but I almost feel as if I could be after reading her story.

3. Nick. It took me a full two-thirds of the book to warm up to him, but once I did, I adored him. He’s an enigma for sure, and I didn’t like the way he treated Lo at first, but the more I got to know him, the more I understood why he is the way he is.

4. Music. Lo spends a great deal of time going to concerts in small venues and if I hadn’t had a couple of newborn twins in 2003, I would have loved to have joined her. That was totally my scene!

5. Ending. So much is wrapped up in the last twenty percent of the book. I cried, I laughed, and I finished feeling completely satisfied.

Bottom Line
An adorably fun and unique romance with some of the best characters in the genre! One of my favorite reads of 2020.

Synopsis
The Untouchables. That’s what everyone calls them. At least, it’s my best friend’s nickname for them. And since she’s the only one that talks to me at my new school, I’ll take her word for it.

The nickname probably comes from the fact that they’re exorbitantly wealthy. Old wealth. The kind that isn’t flaunted around. But you can tell by the way they carry themselves. Or maybe the name just refers to the fact that they’re so beautiful it’s almost hard to look at them.

No matter the reason for their nickname, it’s an ironic one. Because I’ve only been going to this school for a week and I already want to touch.

Synopsis
Sometimes, you just have to punch a shape-shifting vampire Nazi. Like tonight, for instance.

Meet Princess Kaps: renegade, dragon shifter, and general pain in her royal parent’s backsides. Although Kaps pretends to love rock and roll, she’s actually obsessed with fighting the Audax, a group of shape-shifting vampire Nazis. And to slay herself some vampires, Kaps collects magical dragon relics.

Enter the L’Griffe–AKA the shifter mafia–who also hunt down supernatural artifacts. Kaps gets in their way and ends up with a price on her head. And things get tricky.

A bounty hunter named Mack comes to collect. Although he’s human, Mack knows all about shifter ways. And what he lacks in shifting power, Mack more than makes up for with a lethal combination of looks, strength, and smarts. After luring the princess away with an epic kiss, Mack slaps some supernatural handcuffs on Kaps, tosses her in a van, and heads off to L’Griffe headquarters with his quarry.

The fact that Kaps is really dragon royalty doesn’t bother Mack in the slightest. And the Audax don’t frighten him, either.

But that kiss with Kaps? It might be a problem.

“I am super intrigued by Kaps! She is independent, snarky and adventurous, and just a hint jaded. I can’t wait to see what terrible mischief she finds herself in during her own book!” – Smada’s Book Smack

Excerpt #1
Chapter One
KAPS

Sometimes, you simply must punch a shape-shifting vampire Nazi.

Like tonight, for instance.

I stroll through New York’s Central Park. Ahead of me, there strides a guy in a chicken costume. I’m talking yellow feathers, plumed tail, the whole smash. A sash extends from his shoulder to his hip that reads Eat At Cluck Town. This fellow is anything but normal, and not for the obvious wardrobe reasons.

He’s actually a vampire.

Even worse, he’s an audax, which is a shape-shifting vampire Nazi. All audax started off as German soldiers in World War II. During a raid, they entered the magical city of El Dorado, got changed into vampires, and have been causing trouble ever since.

All of which is why I can’t wait to punch this particular blood sucker.

With a stake.

Right through his heart.

Because I’m more than just a teenager who’s dressed up for a night of dancing. I’m a dragon-shifter princess with a secret obsession.

Slaying audax.

I know. My life is strange. It runs in the family.

Squinting, I focus on the guy’s birdy outfit. Dragon shifters like me are immune to supernatural glamours, so I can easily detect the decaying body that’s magically hidden under all those feathers.

Hello, vampire.

The real costume-wearing human got attacked by an audax. After drinking the victim’s blood, this particular vampire magically took on the man’s appearance, bird outfit and all.

And the original chicken guy? Way dead.

Cold sorrow moves through me. Most likely, I’m the first to know about this lost life. I’m certainly the only one around here who detects the audax.

Ah, to be a clueless human. They’ve no idea how many evils surround them.

For his part, Vampire Chicken Guy (VCG for short) keeps sauntering along the stone path, his plumed tail bobbing with each step. He pulls off his fake chicken head to reveal someone my age—that would be seventeen—with round cheeks, short red hair and tons of freckles. A stolen face.

My grief melts into lava-hot rage. How dare this audax kill a human? I twist the clunky golden bracelet around my right wrist. If I take this off and flip the segments about, it transforms into a small spike. That’s the only way to fully kill an audax…

A golden stake through the heart.

Meanwhile VCG smiles innocently at passersby. New Yorkers actually grin and wave in return, which is rare. Must be a chicken thing. I hoist up my bandeau top and keep following. The dance club can wait.

VCG is going down.

Synopsis
Caitlyn always thought she was just your average small-town waitress, but she’s anything but average. Suffering from frequent headaches and vivid daydreams, her oddities mask a secret hidden deep within her mind—one that could defeat even the cleverest of psychics.

When a mysterious circus arrives in town, Caitlyn is immediately drawn to it. While visiting the hypnotic show, she meets a seer who warns her of a gruesome future and urges her to stay away. But soon, Caitlyn finds herself ensnared in the show and the Ringmaster himself.

Recognizing Caitlyn’s powers for what they are, and believing they are the ones he has been searching for, the Ringmaster is determined to claim them as his own. Trapped within the circus and the Ringmaster’s devious grip, Caitlyn realizes that to escape the seer’s foretold fate, her only choice is to fight. Banding together with Bevier, an imprisoned psychic, Meg, an eccentric seamstress, and Daniel, a handsome magician, Caitlyn falls into the Psychic Realm to thwart the Ringmaster and stop the show before they succumb to his control and are trapped forever in his spectacle of souls.

 ————————————————————————————–

Excerpt #2
The Ringmaster loomed in the shadows, peeking out from behind the heavy curtain. Letting his eyes wander over the audience, he stopped here and there allowing his attention to focus on certain spectators.

“Anyone?” Madam Svetlana asked, gliding up beside him.

Shaking his head he replied, “No, not yet.”

He had done this a thousand times, searching the crowd for a pulse—a pull— an aura that glistened a little brighter than the others. Those were the juiciest, the ones with the buzz.

“There are many happy auras tonight but…” the Ringmaster let his voice trail off as he squinted, trying to goad one to pop out at him.

There’s always someone, a voice whispered in his mind.

“There!” He pointed.

Madam Svetlana followed his gaze, landing on the girl she had spoken with the day before. Her long hair pulled back into a loose braid, her eyes still glowing with the same majestic blue. Frustrated she hadn’t heeded her warning, Svetlana had switched out the card hidden within her pocket and had Ian add something extra to drink softening her aura and ensuring she wouldn’t be noticed. But it hadn’t worked, he still found her.

“Caitlyn,” Madam Svetlana said obediently.

“Caitlyn,” he repeated, as if testing the name on his tongue—tasting it, feeling it—to ensure it felt right. “Yes,” he nodded, “You’ve met her? Did you know she held an ability?”

“She came into my booth the other night, wanting a reading with her friend.” Madam Svetlana nodded toward Vanessa who now stood on stage about to be sawed in half. “I did feel an ability within her, but she does not know it is there.”

“Tell me about the power,” he demanded, his eyes never straying from his prey.

“It felt strong,” she shrugged.

Delicious, the voice salivated.

The Ringmaster turned toward her to watch her face more carefully. Squinting subtly, he read the quivering aura around her. He knew she was hiding something from him by the soft nervous purple it emitted.

“And…” he urged, taking a step closer to her, daring her to lie or withhold any information.

“It was powerful. Stronger than I’ve felt in long time.”

“But?” he pushed.

“But,” she continued, “it seems blocked. Stuck inside her mind, and she is stubborn girl—young. She may never release it.” The psychic fluttered her hands about.

The Ringmaster turned to the stage once more. “On her own.”

“What?” she asked, tilting her head.

“She may never release it on her own, you mean.” He glared back, watching Madam Svetlana nod once.

“Yes, I suppose,” she replied. “But do you really believe she is the one?”

“I’d need to get close to her to find out for sure,” he said as he watched Caitlyn smiling happily. Her aura pulsed a sublime shade of pinkish-purple where the edges glistened slightly with her hidden ability. He knew she had power within, waiting to be released, he only needed to find the right key to unlock it.

Daniel shouted, “Abracadabra” from the stage while the audience clapped. Vanessa stepped out of the sawed through box, perfectly unharmed.

“Send her the tonic,” he told Madam Svetlana.

“Are you sure? As I said she is not pliable enough yet. It may not work, or worse, it could damage her mind completely. She is too young to lose—”

“Send. It,” he commanded, lowering his tone to a depth that sent an icy shiver down the psychic’s spine.

Madam Svetlana nodded before turning to leave. The Ringmaster waited, mindlessly twisting his wedding ring, as his gaze drifted over Caitlyn. Nodding gently, as if answering an internal question, the Ringmaster knew she was the one he’d been searching for. She had to be.

Hungry. It whispered in the back of his mind.

He shook off the voice with a heavy sigh.

WHAT REVIEWERS ARE SAYING:

★★★★★”Page Turner of a Coming of Age Tale. From the get go, I knew this wasn’t going to be a typical YA coming of age tale. Olson expertly crafts her characters with realism and humanity.” – JenMN

★★★★★ “Great new YA book! Team Engen? Team Lev? Or perhaps, simply, Team Ida!” – Devon N.

★★★★★ “The Beginnings of a Terrific New Novelist! I cannot recommend this book enough!” – Justin J Atkinson

Excerpt 2
I kicked Dan out ten minutes after dinner, because I wanted to visit Janelle’s parents before I left for Africa and time was running out. After rejecting Dan’s offer of a ride, I set out on foot for the two-block walk to Janelle’s house. I kept my head down and twirled a dandelion between my thumb and forefinger. I liked to test myself to make sure I could still find her house without using my eyes.

A few moments later, I stopped and turned my head sideways to see the familiar raised cement. I stepped onto the walk just as the screen door banged shut, and my head snapped up. I saw the side of Engen’s smiling face as he said goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Lyndahl, and I was overcome with a feeling of tenderness toward him. The YAHN orientation had been rough. He’d stayed by my side whenever possible; we just hadn’t talked much.

Engen’s eyes swiveled around to mine and his smile faded. I dropped the dandelion, hating that I used to be the reason for his smile, not the disappearance of it. Head lowered, he walked toward me. I continued to trudge up the walk, eyes firmly fixed on the Lyndahl’s garden. We passed each other in slow motion, it seemed. I felt his warm fingers grasp my pinkie finger at the knuckle, and as he kept walking, his hand slowly ran down the entire length of my finger.

I half-glanced behind me in time to see his foot crush the discarded dandelion.

I know how you feel, I thought to the weed.

I rapped on the screen door. I’d spent the walk preparing myself for the inevitable misery I’d see in Mr. and Mrs. L.’s eyes, along with the slumped shoulders and hands that were so weak they could barely hold a coffee mug to their lips.

Mr. L. answered the door. He was 6’1, slim as a rail, and bald.

“Hi,” I greeted, careful not to meet his eyes. The failure to protect his daughter had a haunting way of reflecting out of them at all times.  “Evening, Ida,” said Mr. L. “You and Engen just missed each other.”

“I miss him all the time now it seems,” I said, trying to sound nonchalant.

I walked in and closed my eyes at the absence of smell. When Janelle was alive, some sweet aroma was always in the air, sugar cookies or Rice Krispie bars. The untouched grapefruit half that sat in front of Mrs. L. on the kitchen table didn’t even emit a scent.

Mrs. L. let the curtain fall back in place. “Engen’s still not speaking to you?”

“No.” I pulled out a kitchen chair and sat. The cushion was warm. Engen.

“A tragedy born from a tragedy,” she mused.

“Oh, Mrs. L.,” I said consolingly. “The two are hardly comparable.”

“I made him promise to call you this evening.” Her hand flew to her cardigan. She closed it at the throat as if she were cold.

“Would you like something to drink, Ida?” Mr. L. asked.

“Water, please.” I shook my hair back.

“Your hair is so beautiful.” Mrs. L. gave a sad smile. “She envied it.”

I took the water glass from Mr. L. “Thank you.”

Mr. L. kissed his wife’s cheek. “I’m turning in.”

“It’s only seven-thirty. We aren’t going to see Ida again for half a year.”

Mr. L. took off his glasses and rubbed a spot with the corner of his shirt. “Dear, I am tired.”

“Goodbye. I’ll call you guys from Africa every now and then,” I said, before Mrs. L. tried to persuade him again.

“I would love that. Bye, Ida.” Mr. L. bowed his head to me.

Ever since Janelle died, Mr. L. stopped using the word “good”.

“Engen told me that you plan to disappear after high school; he seemed pretty distraught over it.” Mrs. L. looked up from the bottom of her water glass. “I’d like to disappear, too.”

“I know.” Man, it was dark in this house.

“When something horrible happens to a person you love, it changes you.” Her eyes were wide with grief. “You haven’t changed.” “You have no idea what’s going on inside of me.”

“I am perfectly aware of what’s going on inside of you.” Her eyes dropped to my mid-section.

“I wasn’t referring to the baby.” I took a drink of water and thought about how if it wasn’t for her daughter, I wouldn’t be in this pregnancy predicament. I certainly didn’t feel like discussing that with Mrs. L., though.

Mrs. L. stood. She held out the bowl with the half of grapefruit and asked with her eyes if I wanted it, but I shook my head. She brought the bowl to the garbage can and threw away the grapefruit followed by the glass bowl.

GENES, the third book in the young adult sci-fi/dystopian adventure series, ISAN, by Mary Ting

GENES (ISAN Series #3) by Mary Ting

5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
Alliances are forming. The resistance is growing. Everything is about to change.

With her memory still fragmented, Ava returns to the International Sensory Assassin Network (ISAN) to find the twin sister she never knew she had.

But as Ava hunts for information, she finds herself tangled in a web of yet more lies and conspiracy. The Helix serum may not be required to access her superpowers, and the number of male assassins—previously considered too volatile to tolerate Helix—is growing in every territory.

The more Ava uncovers, the more of a threat she becomes to ISAN. Her only salvation may be to join the rebels—if she isn’t killed first.

 ————————————————————————————–

My Review
WARNING: Spoilers for books 1 and 2.

The third book in the International Sensory Assassin Network (ISAN) series, GENES is a rollercoaster ride that never lets up. It picks up in the immediate aftermath of HELIX. We once again find Rhett, Ava and their renegade friends struggling for survival while trying to find a way to bring down ISAN. Except this time, they have the help of some super-powered little friends. At the end of HELIX, we learn a plethora of heinous acts ISAN has been up to. Armed with this knowledge, Ava is more determined than ever to end them and Mr. Novak, the leader of ISAN, once and for all. Ava now knows the identity of her twin, but they are not who she expected. As the rebels fight to save the lives of everyone they love, they willingly risk their own. There’s not much I can say without giving too much away, but this installment is action-packed with more romance, more love, and more loss than in the previous two books. It’s the very definition of a page-turner.

Plot
The story is well-plotted and moves almost constantly. The author does a good job of planting the seeds we need at just the right time for everything to fall inevitably into place. Ting is an expert at white-knuckle suspense and GENES is no different. The stakes are higher than ever and Ava and Rhett have so much more to lose.

Characters
Not only do we hear from Ava and Rhett again, but we get some new points of view. Rhett’s goes from first person to third and it was a little jarring at first, but I got used to it quickly. Ava continues her growth arc, learning that she is not responsible for everyone and everything. In addition to the new characters we met at the end of HELIX, there are more new characters, both good and evil. Some of the bad dudes aren’t as well developed as they could be, but that’s a small complaint in an otherwise stellar read.

What I Loved About GENES
1. Twists.
There are more twists and turns, starting in chapter 1, that kept me on the edge of my seat.

2. Rhett. Once again, he is swoon-worthy and nearly perfect.

3. Mr. Novak. He is the type of villain I relish hating.

4. Ava. She has her moments when I want to slap some sense into her, but the more I learn about her backstory, the more I’ve come to understand her.

5. Momo. A new character, she’s spunk on steroids and may be my new favorite character. Watch out Rhett, you have some adorable competition for best character in the ISAN series.

Bottom Line
Another pulse-pounding edition in this high-tech, sci-fi dystopian romantic adventure.

Synopsis
Bane Illes never smiled.

He never spoke.

But each day, that brooding wizard gave Janiver Benoit a glance.

And when she could not take another quiet stare, or the warmth that look sent over her skin, she took from Bane something he’d never give freely—one lingering, soul knocking kiss.

Ten years later, someone has stolen the one thing that keeps magic hidden from the mortals in Crimson Cove and only Janiver can recover it. But returning to her hometown means she’ll have to face the past and all the secrets she left buried there, including the one person she promised herself she’d never see again. The dangerous wizard that might make leaving Crimson Cove the last thing she wants to do.

*FORGOTTEN MAGIC was previously independently released as CRIMSON COVE. However, Eden has since sold the rights to City Owl Press and the book has been replotted, rewritten, and kicks off the new Crimson Coves trilogy which follows witch Janiver Benoit and her siblings as they try to unravel the well-hidden secrets that have destroyed their family.

WHAT REVIEWERS ARE SAYING:

★★★★★”Butler’s tantalizing fantasy romance, originally self-published as Crimson Cove, burns slow and hot…The magical elements are electric and the chemistry between Bane and Janiver is delicious. Butler builds the tension slowly, carefully pulling story threads to a satisfying but open-ended climax. Readers will be eager to return to Crimson Cove.” – Publishers Weekly

★★★★★ “Eden is a masterful storyteller who takes mere words and turns them into magic.”

★★★★★ “I REALLY LOVED this fresh, innovative, and out of the box concept of a modern romance with a dark, ethereal twist.”

Excerpt 2
“Jani…” he started, following me, coming to his knees despite his bad ankle, crawling so close that I had nowhere to go. “You’ve been keeping something from me. I see it. Even in the damn dark I can see it. It’s everywhere.” Bane moved his warm fingers to my bottom lip and let his thumb glide across my cheekbone. “You refuse to meet my eyes. You avoid me when I stare too long.”

“You always stare too long.”

“I can’t help that.”

He was massive, a sweltering cloud that collected energy, that absorbed emotion so that it became consuming—a vacuous funnel that craved the things it did not need but took what it wanted. That was Bane. He took control, but for the life of me I could not see past letting him take what had always been his.

“Tell me my daydream was invented. That dream of being in the classroom with you.” There was a challenge in his voice that reminded me of us as children, huddled and scared, taunting and fearless. But I wouldn’t answer, couldn’t tell him something that would hurry along his anger. It would be heavy enough when it came.

“Jani,” he said, coming so close that I could smell the sweat from his skin and hear the tiny rasp that caught in his throat.

“You’ll hate me.” It was as close to an explanation as I could offer.

Bane pressed his hand against my cheek, the touch warm and soft but with that small red current still working behind his skin, still flirting with me to cry out that he was mine. “Never, little witch.”

Give and take. He wanted, needed, but didn’t understand why. He didn’t remember, and at that moment, I could not bring myself to remind him. It would hurt too much. But the warmth in his hand, the sweet, honeysuckle scent from his skin weaving like a spell of its own making, intoxicating me, lulling me closer and closer until only Bane—the sound, feel, and smell of him—took up all the space in my head. There was only this man. There was only this moment.

Both belonged to me.

Our mouths came close together, our breaths heated and dampened our faces, our lips—bringing us to the blistering, bated breath before the race begins. A small incline, the minutest stretch of my neck and that mouth, that tongue would belong to me. It was different from the night he spelled me. There was no primeval encouragement from the ley lines egging us on, inching us closer and closer toward our most basic urges. This was more, and somehow with Bane’s face so close to mine, with his fingers tugging on the back of my hair, I knew that one kiss would unhinge me. It would change everything and there would be no stopping us.

“I…this…” My words got stuck somewhere around the back of my throat, clung tight against the hot breath that fanned out when Bane rested his forehead against mine, when he moved his mouth to kiss between my eyebrows.

“This isn’t normal, Jani. This…” He paused, shuddering when that pulsing red light shot across his skin, hovering near his fingertips. “Someone spelled us.”

Blinking, nodding, it was all I could manage. Bane was too strong, the heat in the room too full, the air too thick. Yes, someone had been spelled—him. Someone had done the spelling—me. But really I was a coward, scared of what he’d think, say, damn well do if he found out I’d taken his memories from before. Even if it was for the best, I’d still lied to him—the lie of omission. I’d blocked him and kept for myself something I had no business hiding away.

But Bane seemed content to ignore the past. He seemed mesmerized by the moment, fascinated by the play of reddish light on our skin and that whip of succulent heat that warmed us every time he moved his fingers across my collarbone. “I think I know what this is, Jani, but it makes no sense. Nothing between us, then or now, ever made sense to me.” And it wouldn’t, not to him, not with the understanding I’d taken from him when I blocked his memories. He kept flirting closer to the truth, skating the surface of what that light meant and where he’d seen it before. I couldn’t let him find out, not like that. Not just then.

“Bane,” I said, pulling him closer, loving the low, deep throttle of his voice vibrating when my nails slid up his neck. “You watched over me. Protected me.”

“Did I scare you then?”

“Always,” I said, feeling brave, reckless. I exhaled, staring in his eyes like I wasn’t a coward. “But I loved you for it.”

One swift nod, as though he’d made up some silent decision on his own and Bane picked me up, pulling me closer, his arm around my waist and that busted ankle injury forgotten in his smooth haste to kiss me.

His look was feral and possessive, and even though some loud, loud voice in my head told me to stop him, reminded me that it was my job to stop him, I was powerless against the rush of his mouth against my neck and the greedy hold of his massive hand cupping my hip.

“This isn’t…this won’t lead anywhere…” There was little fight in my protest, my words meant to stop him, only contradicted by how I stretched my neck, giving him greater access to my skin.

“It already has. It started a long time ago.”

“It didn’t…”

“Yes, Jani,” he said, shutting me up with that wide mouth, with the slip of his tongue along my bottom lip. “Every look back then to right now, I was saying the same thing. Every single one.”

My body was electrified, stunted by Bane’s confession, crippled by the light heat collecting around us. If I asked and was disappointed, I’d lose nothing. I had claimed him long ago and had lived with the empty feeling of that for years. If he claimed me now, not remembering a thing and discovered later how badly I’d betrayed him, could I stand the notion that I was his and he no longer wanted me?

Risk and rules. My life existed around both and just for a moment with Bane watching me, with him waiting for permission he didn’t seem familiar with ever having to wait for, I wanted to take something for myself. Just once. “Do I have to ask?”

“No,” he said, his bottom lip twitching as he watched me, “just look a little deeper.”

Synopsis
When they say be careful what you wish for, do you pay attention?

Neither did Oliver Tunstead.

Oliver wishes for nothing more than to get his mind off his crappy bartending job, pile of debt big enough to swallow him whole, and playboy ex-boyfriend/boss who refuses to back off. Too bad distractions, like the hot little convertible he has his eye on, cost megabucks. And Oliver is flat broke. Renting the spare bedroom in his rundown beachfront cottage is his only option to pick up the cash he needs—a risky proposition, as Oliver is the polar opposite of a people-person. When he responds to a bizarre ad in the Waterfront Gazette seeking summer housing, he gets more than he bargained for. But Oliver can cope… After all, how much harm can a single quirky tenant do to his tightly guarded life in three short months?

Where Oliver is a loner by design, urban cowboy Bodie is a loner by necessity. A family dispute long ago dropkicked him onto the path of a lifelong wanderer. This changes when Bodie moves into the tiny beachfront cottage and starts working the door at Oliver’s bar.

Despite Oliver and Bodie’s nearly paralyzing instinct to avoid commitment, they fall into a wary romance. And to their surprise, life as a couple is sweetly satisfying; that is, until their jealous boss devises a cruel plan to destroy the tentative bond they’ve built. True to form, Bodie hits the road, leaving Oliver to lick his wounds alone.

Can these wounded souls defy their urge to flee and fight for love?

About the Author
Like Jude Munro, her fictional characters in her gay romance novels are drawn to the beach. They’ve sunbathed on the sands of many alluring East Coast beaches—Chappaquiddick, Hampton, Old Orchard, and Bradenton—along with the fantastical beaches in Jude’s books. They’ll answer questions like “Who do you think you are, the sun god?” (which they often resemble) if they can hear you over “Boys of Summer” cranking on their headphones. Though some prefer “Margaritaville.” To most of Jude’s men, no shoes and no shirt is really not a problem. But even on the sunniest of beach days, the guys in Jude’s books do have problems… as in, serious relationship issues. Many of which seem insurmountable. And each character must earn his day at the beach (yes, there is always a HEA)..

Young Adult Book Review – I HATE YOU FULLER JAMES by Kelly Ann Blount

I HATE YOU FULLER JAMES, a young adult contemporary romance by USA Today bestselling author Kelly Anne Blount

I HATE YOU FULLER JAMES by Kelly Anne Blount

5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
I hate you, Fuller James.

I hate your floppy hair and your lopsided grin and those laughing blue eyes that always seem to be laughing at me.

I hate that you’re the most popular guy in school and I’m still the girl who sneezed and spit out her retainer on someone at a middle school dance. It’s just such a cliché.

I hate that I’m being forced to tutor you in English and keep it a secret from everyone. Because otherwise it might put our basketball team’s chances at winning State in jeopardy, and even though I hate you, I love basketball.

I hate that it seems like you’re keeping a secret from me…and that the more time we spend together, the less I feel like I’m on solid ground. Because I’m starting to realize there’s so much more to you than meets the eye. Underneath it all, you’re real.

But what I hate most is that I really don’t hate you at all.

 ————————————————————————————–

My Review
My first novel by Kelly Anne Blount will not be my last. I must now devour everything she’s ever written. The story is compelling, but it’s the characters that really stand out to me. Too often, the story is really good, but I don’t particularly like the characters, but I fell in love with both Wren and Fuller from the beginning, which is hard when one of said characters is a giant-ass douchebag. But Blount gives us a glimpse into his life and immediately softens our hearts. No matter what he’s done to Wren in the past, his devotion to his family makes him a hero everyone can root for. And anyone who has ever been bullied by the mean girls can immediately identify with Wren. Dumped by her best friend at a middle school dance after an unfortunately embarrassing situation that was only made worse by one Fuller James, Wren distrusts girls and has a small group of friends in high school. Both are the type of guy friends every woman deserves. Wren hates Fuller James so when she is caught on video engaging in a lunchtime food fight with him, both are hauled into the principal’s office. Captain of the boys state-champion basketball team, Fuller may find his senior year riding the bench instead of being scouted by colleges. Wren is on a smooth track to class Valedictorian and the logical tutor for Fuller. Except she hates him. Loathes him. Would literally prefer to do ANYTHING other than spend one second with Fuller James.

It’s clear from this opening scene that this is going to be an enemies to lovers story, but it’s a delicious path they take to get there. Fuller comes to first appreciate Wren before realizing all those years of making her a punchline prevented him from seeing her inner beauty but the outer as well. Not only does she have legs for days, but eyes he could get lost in. Wren sees another side of Fuller when he stops by her house to pick up some notes. This is a side she can’t fully grasp, but it forces her to realize there may be more to this this arrogant, cocky jerk than meets the eye. The more time they spend together, the more they both realized they’ve completely misjudged each other. If only Fuller hadn’t made that stupid, regrettable bet.

Plot
Expertly plotted, most of the story follows a formula that isn’t full of surprises, but the character’s depth and breadth shine through in those moments when the inevitable unfolds. While the plot may not be original, the imaginary friends I made while reading this story react in original ways, bringing a deeper level of enjoyment to a lighthearted romance. The nod the author gives to some of the best romcoms ever, including Say Anything, only made this a tale nearer and dearer to my heart.

The Characters
Simply amazing. I have to remind myself they’re not real, and that is the saddest part of this book. Fuller is fully-developed and has the most complete character arc, because frankly, he needs it more than he needs an A in AP Lit. His journey is both honest and organic as he realizes he’s been far too shallow for too long. Wren is so relatable and though she has her own arc, it’s not as significant as she transitions from the victim of bullying to someone who can hold her head high even through new humiliating events. The best part of the characterization is not only being able to see Wren and Fuller through the eyes of each other, since it’s dual first-person point of view, but also in the eyes of their family members. Nothing humanizes someone more than seeing them among loved ones, who not only love them unconditionally, but absolutely won’t take any of their crap.

Top Five Things I Loved About I HATE YOU FULLER JAMES
1. Fuller. He’s perfectly imperfect, making him a flawed hero who’s easy to love.

2. Wren. She’s so complex and completely relatable. I love how she learns to stand up to her bullies.

3. Hudson. Fuller’s younger brother is both hilarious and loyal. The interactions between Hudson and Fuller bring out the best of Fuller James.

4. Gramps. Wren’s basketball loving grandfather is a breath of fresh air and helps show Wren’s devotion to family in a way that would have been harder without him in it.

5. Angsty romance. Just enough angst without being over the top made this a total page-turner for me.

Bottom Line
A fun romance with amazing characters and a stellar supporting cast.

Never look back.

Brian will never forgive himself for the pain Maya went through when he couldn’t protect her. When he’s given one more chance to make things right, he swears that he’ll do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means he could lose his job as a Deputy Sheriff.

Excerpt #3
“If you tell a woman even one time that she isn’t what you want, or reject her for someone else, she is never going to forget it, Brian. No matter how many times you tell her afterwards that she is the most important person in the world, she is going to be taken back to the moment you crushed her existence. And it’s up to you to make that right.” Brian stared at his dad, unsure of what he should say. He hadn’t even brought up Maya at all. He couldn’t be talking about Ashley, both his parents had hated her.

Trying to convince himself more than his father, Brian said, “Dad, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Of course you do.” And he didn’t have to say anything else about the situation.

They sat on the porch, looking out into the woods in silence while they reflected on their lives and relationships. Brian’s mom and dad had been married for over thirty years, but they also fought like cats and dogs most of the time.

“You know, there are times that your mother won’t let me forget about. But I’ll tell you what, son. Making up for those times has led to some of the best moments in my entire life. I owe her so much, just for turning me into the man I am today.”

“I know dad, you’ve told me before.” Growing up, Brian had been taught the importance of respecting women and behaving in a way that would reflect well on his parents. “I’m gonna go give mom her hug before I have to leave. I’m working tonight. Are you sure it’s okay for the boys to sleep over tonight?” As he mentioned them, they both came running into the backyard followed by a golden retriever. The dog had been here forever, it seemed, and was at least fifteen years old. His mom had named him Greg so that he felt like a real part of the family.

“Yeah of course, they give Greg a run for his money.” His dad chuckled at the sight of Greg chasing the boys around the yard.

“Okay. Thanks Dad.” And he turned and walked into the kitchen where his mom was spending her day.

He watched her for a few minutes before he walked into her line of sight. She was mumbling to herself about dinner and trying to decide what the boys would like most. In that moment he understood that the house they stood in wasn’t home. His mother and father were what made it home. They were the real home, the people who he loved and wanted to share his life with.

“Have I ever told you the story about your father falling in love with my best friend and picking her over me when we were younger?” His mother, Janet, interrupted his thoughts.

“Seriously mom, you too? Dad already gave me this speech.”

His mother was aging, but still beautiful. She had brown eyes set against pale skin and dark hair. She had the same laugh lines that his dad had but was barely taller than five feet. Their years had been spent growing together, fighting each other and laughing at the same jokes, smiling at the same stories, and creating an entire world that no one else was part of. His parents had been best friends while he was growing up, but Brian had known that there were troubles before he was born.

“Just sit down and listen to me.” He did as he was told, planting his ass on a barstool while she puttered around the kitchen pulling out the ingredients for dinner and desert for the night. Her voice was sweet and melodic, lilting as though she were about to start singing. He had loved that voice growing up.

“When I was fifteen your daddy had just turned sixteen. I thought the world hung in his eyes, you know. Well I hadn’t really started to show my charms yet,” she winked at him and he knew she was talking about the features of her female body.

“My best friend though, Sheri, she had. The boys went crazy about her and your father was no different. He was the best looking boy in town, you know. Well Sheri knew how I felt about him, and she went after him still. She had him wrapped around her little finger for a year. I was heartbroken, swore I’d never love anyone else. You know how teenagers are. The summer I turned sixteen though, everything started changing.

“Your daddy was slow to realize that all she had to offer was the space between her legs. When he did, I wasn’t there. I spent the summer with my aunt and uncle in Boston, and when I got home everything had changed. Sheri was sent away to boarding school for getting caught with Jimmy Parsons behind the church. Ryan had finally grown into enough of a man to admit that he had made the wrong choice.” Brian was a little startled by his mom using his father’s name. She very rarely did it. “The first time I saw him after that trip; he looked at me and never looked away.”

“That’s sweet ma, but I don’t know how that applies to me.” And yet, he could feel the pull of familiarity, the idea that she was talking about his life by example.

“You don’t see it?” His mama was never one to mince words, “You wasted how many years with Ashley, when you should have taken one look at that little Hispanic girl and never looked away.”

“Ma, they aren’t the same thing at all.” Brian knew that his mom was trying to make comparisons between the two situations, but he couldn’t get there.

“Listen, Brian. I love you,” she said. “But if you don’t see the lines you should take a step back. Let her heal and then worry about making a connection with her.” He knew that it hurt her to say it, but she wouldn’t hold back.

Synopsis
One year, two opposites, and a love that will blindside and, ultimately, shatter them.

She’s an aspiring interior designer who dreams of falling in love. He’s an ex-football star who thinks love is a con.

She’s a virgin, and he doesn’t do virgins. He’s cocky, infuriating, and not her type.

She wants the fairytale. He wants freedom.

Blake and Farrah shouldn’t have fallen for each other the way they did: totally, completely, and irrevocably.

Because they’re studying abroad in Shanghai, and they only have one year.

Because forces at home threaten to rip them apart, even if they don’t know it yet.

And because, eventually, they must face the most heartbreaking lesson they’ll ever learn:  sometimes, even the greatest love can’t conquer all.

WARNING: This is the first book in a duet. It’s a full-length novel and there are no sudden cliffhangers, but Blake and Farrah’s story continues in book two, If the Sun Never Sets (due out July 2020), which takes place five years later. HEA guaranteed in the second book!

Excerpt #2
The library door opened. Farrah walked in with what looked like a sketch pad and a stack of magazines tucked under her arm.

Now there was trouble. Farrah was beautiful, and Blake got a kick out of riling her up, but she was off-limits. Not only was she in FEA—which meant he had to see her every day if things between them went south—but she was a virgin.

Blake slept with a virgin once, in high school. Granted, he didn’t know Lorna was a virgin until after the fact, and when he declined to make things exclusive between them, she took a key to his beloved Chevy until it resembled Freddy Krueger’s face.

Fun times.

Then Lorna’s father found out Blake slept with his precious daughter and tracked him down after football practice with a shotgun in hand. Luckily, Blake’s coach saw them and called the police before Blake found himself eating dirt six feet beneath the ground. The police let the man off with a stern warning, since he technically hadn’t tried to shoot Blake (yet), but Blake still filed a restraining order against the girl’s entire damn family.

Even funner times.

Lorna transferred schools soon after, and Blake swore never to hook up with a virgin again. That didn’t mean he couldn’t flirt with Farrah, though. Flirting was harmless.

He retook his seat, laced his hands behind his head, and kicked his feet up on the table with an insouciant smile.

Farrah arched an eyebrow at his unorthodox position. Instead of commenting, she sat at the table next to him and opened one of her magazines.

Blake stretched his arms over his head in a way that showed off his abs—one of his best assets. Along with everything else on his body.

It ain’t cocky if it’s true.

To his annoyance, Farrah didn’t look up. She continued to read, serene as a monk.

Blake swung his feet to the floor. He walked over to her table, plunked his ass in the chair opposite hers, and rested his chin in his hands.

The clock ticked. The A/C hummed. The pages rustled as she turned them.

Finally, Farrah slammed her magazine shut with a huff. “Can I help you?”

Blake grinned. Success!

“Now is that the proper way to greet someone?” he drawled. Austinites don’t have strong accents, but he could lay it on thick when he wanted to. “Didn’t your mama teach you manners?”

“She did. That’s why I left you and your vanity in peace. It would’ve been rude to interrupt.”

Blake placed a hand over his chest. “Vain? Me? You break my heart.”

“I doubt anyone can break your heart.” Farrah fluttered her lashes. “If they do, the proofs from your solo photoshoot earlier will ease the pain.”

His body vibrated with laughter. “You know, I’m down-to-earth once you get to know me.”

“Is that your favorite thing about yourself?”

“Favorite, as in one? I can’t pick just one.” He frowned. “Oh. I see.”

“Uh-huh. Now that we’ve established the obvious fact of your vanity, can you be quiet? I’m trying to work.”

“So am I.”

“You are not working.”

“I was working until you came in and interrupted me.”

“I didn’t say anything when I came in!”

“You distracted me with your radiant presence. It was like a goddess descended from the heavens. How can I focus on something as mundane as Chinese vocabulary when faced with such an extraordinary vision?”

Farrah’s mouth twitched once, twice, until she caved and doubled over with laughter.

A grin stretched across Blake’s face. There was something magical about seeing someone so composed let loose, and to know he was the one who made her laugh like that.

“I don’t know what to do with you.” She wiped tears from her eyes.

“I can suggest a few things.” Blake pictured Farrah climbing into his lap and straddling him. Taking his shirt off. Taking her shirt off. Gripping his hair and moaning while he feasted on those sure-to-be delectable breasts of hers.

Hey, he was a guy. He couldn’t help himself.

Except this guy now needed a cold shower.

Synopsis
Parker
I’ve been disgraced. I have nothing left to my name after being dishonorably discharged from the military. But I was falsely accused. It doesn’t matter though. It would take a Presidential pardon for me to get my life back, and I don’t see that happening anytime soon. But then Knight walked into my life and offered me a chance at redemption. I don’t want to believe that it could be true, but I’m ready to go along for the ride and see what happens. That’s how I met her. She threw me through a window, but that won’t stop me from seeing her again.

Blake
You know that phrase ‘I’ve gotten myself into a pickle’? Well, this is a huge pickle. I thought I knew what I was doing when I ran, but this is so much more involved than I ever imagined. I didn’t think someone else would show up at the senator’s house where I was digging up information. I also didn’t expect him to be so hot or to follow me. And I really didn’t expect him to attack me. But I know how to defend myself, so I’m not too worried about it. Now I just have to stay hidden until I can figure out what’s going on. But nothing in my life seems to be going as planned lately. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when he shows up yet again.

About the Author
I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

Synopsis
Now what?

Everything has changed, and not for the better. The not-so-perfect life I had as VP is gone, along with the team that’s been by my side each step of my political journey. Every move I make, every breath and thought, now affects millions, and the weight wears me down without Trey as a welcomed distraction.

They tell me war is coming, and I’m the one who has to stop it. But how is the question no one can answer. Past enemies lurk in the shadows while new ones hide in plain sight, stalking, watching, and waiting for the right moment to take me out. I need Trey back. I need them all by my side and ready to fight for me.

Can I undo the mess that my predecessor left in his wake, or will I break under the burden to save the world?

No pressure, right?

Power Surge is the fourth book in the five-book Power Play series and is a continuation of Randi and Trey’s epic love story. The books in this series cannot be read as standalones. All five books follow one main couple’s relationship as it grows through a five-year time period. It’s suspenseful, steamy, and oh so unputdownable. If you’re a fan of Tiffany Snow, Meghan March, and Skye Warren, then this series is for YOU!

Excerpt #2
GALE
“A day ago, you seemed more amenable to this argument. What changed?” he questioned, taking a seat.

I shrugged. “I was more sentimental on that day.”

“No, you were more like a prince, remembering you have a duty and a purpose higher than yourself. You only seem to forget that after you’ve debased yourself.”

“Is that what the kids are calling sex these days?”

“I let the fact that you were with Sabina until this morning go—”

“Did you? Because it’s not feeling like it.”

“I let it go because she is smart enough to know her place. Giselle, on the other hand, seems always to forget hers,” he said with more venom than was necessary.

“I did not go see Giselle.”

“No, you just spent twelve minutes on a call with her, then sent people out to check on her yesterday. And now you think you’re smart enough to tip around the truth with me!”

“I am not a child nor your child, Arthur. I don’t need you to lecture me!”

“Yes, you fucking well do!” He slammed his hand onto the table. It took a lot for him to curse, and it was usually amusing on the rare occasion he did. Usually. “How many women do you need exactly, by the way? In the morning, you talk to Giselle. In the evening, you are with Sabina. Next week, you will want a whole new set of females. Are you not tired yet, Gale?”

“They make blue pills—”

“I am not in the mood to joke with you!”

“And I not in the mood to fucking argue about my sex life!” I hollered back.

“You watch your tone.”

“Or what?” I rose from my chair because I was done with this morning meeting. “I think we should call it a day—”

“I’m not finished speaking!”

“You are not the king!” I hollered back.

“No, but I am the Adelaar! Which means I can call any lord or lady to service. You spoke to Giselle. Does she want to go back to Brazil? Actually, it doesn’t even matter. I will simply call her husband, and he will surely take her with him!”

“You wouldn’t!”

He raised his right hand. “I swear on the Bible and the crown that I would.”

Excerpt #3
Memories of our senior prom nearly overwhelm me as Buck and I drive to the country club. It’s like I’ve fallen into a hole in the space/time continuum and am watching the past in real time on a movie screen in my brain.

Right after Buck’s near-death experience during dinner, I turn to him and say, “Look, Buck, we’re not exactly a love connection. I know my mom and Sammy roped you into this whole thing and you probably had no intention of ever going, but I think we should dance at least once. That way when we’re adults and have finally overcome the humiliation of our teenage years, we can tell our kids we weren’t total losers. What do you think?”

He reluctantly stands up. “I guess, when you put it that way. Far be it from me to be a total loser.” He offers me his hand. “Let’s do this.”

“We owe it to future generations.”

“For our children,” he says before turning beet red and mumbling, “Not our children together, I mean my children and your children … with other people.”

“Relax, Buck. I know what you meant.” We walk to the dance floor side-by-side and find an open spot near the middle of a throng of our sparkly dressed peers. The song ends so we stand facing each other while we wait for the next one to come on. Three weeks later, or so it seems, the beginning strains of a golden oldie blast through the speakers. “Love of the Common People,” from the Sixteen Candles soundtrack. I wonder if it’s an omen that maybe I shouldn’t give up on my dreams.

Buck lets out a cynical sounding laugh. “More like survival of the common people, huh?”

“We’re not common, Buck,” I tell him. “We’re not so lucky. We’re two very uncommon people spending their adolescence in a high school where we don’t fit in, living three trailers away from each other in a small-town trailer park in Missouri.”

“We’re smart,” he says. “Which is a lot more than most of these goons have going for them. I’d rather be uncommon with options than destined for mediocrity.”

I look up at my date and really consider him before agreeing. “I like how you think. Why is it we’ve never talked before?”

He arches an eyebrow in question. “Really? Seems to me the answer is obvious. We’re both afraid of being the target of any more negative attention.”

“Ouch,” I reply.

Buck shrugs as if saying, just because the truth hurts, doesn’t mean it’s not the truth.

My date turns out to be a good dancer which he attributes to his grandmother’s obsession with the television show Dancing with the Stars. “She makes me practice the steps with her,” he confesses.

“I haven’t the words to describe how shocking I find that,” I joke.

“Yeah, well, tell anyone and I’ll deny it.”

“I’m pretty sure Janine and Melody wouldn’t care. In fact, they’d probably think it was sweet.”

He gives me a little spin to showcase his moves. Luckily, I somehow manage to retain my footing and don’t trip. Suddenly, he asks, “You like Davis Frothingham, right?”

“Why would you think that?” I practically choke on the words. Have I got no game at all?

“I hate to be the one to tell you, but I’m pretty sure everyone knows. You stare at the guy a lot.”

I want to curl up in a ball of embarrassment and die. “Really?” I squeak, hoping he’ll lie to me and tell me he was just kidding.

No such luck. “I’ll let you in on a secret.”

“What could possibly be as embarrassing as the fact that I’m pining for a guy so far out of my league we might as well be playing ball on different planets?”

“How about this?” he asks before divulging, “I’ve had a crush on Jessica Holt since we were in kindergarten.”

Disgust must be etched across my face because he hurries to add, “I know she’s never going to think I’m anything but a slug beneath her feet, but I can’t help myself.”

“Did you ever consider the whole vampire-look might be working against you?” I venture to ask.

He stares behind me transfixed by something or someone. “I’m not much to look at without it. I figured being different would at least make me less invisible.”

I totally feel his pain. I’d wear a paper bag over my head to school if it meant people wouldn’t notice me and stop referring to me by the horrendous nickname Chad Adkinson stuck me with on my first day at Creek Water High.

“We should enlist Sammy’s help,” I tell him. “She took some hair courses at beauty school before deciding to focus on nails. I bet she could help you mainstream your look so people would notice you in a good way.”

“I guess it couldn’t hurt.” Then he spins me around so I can see what he was just looking at.

Davis and Jessica are dancing right next to us. They’re like Cinderella and Prince Charming. Davis catches my eye before offering a knee-buckling smile.

Jessica must sense his focus isn’t solely on her because she maneuvers him around so she’s facing me. She flips me the bird and sticks out her tongue like we’re still in grade school or something.

“How in the world can you like her?” I ask Buck. “She’s a total viper.”

“She was the prettiest and sweetest girl in grade school. She gave me a valentine in third grade that said she thought I was cute.” After a pause, he reluctantly confesses, “I still have it.”

Poor Buck. He’s as hopeless as I am. I’m pretty sure nothing is ever going to come from our love for the most popular couple at school, but at least we found each other. If nothing else, I’ve come out of tonight with a new friend, and lord knows, I need as many of those as I can get.

Synopsis
Cybil Roe gave her heart away thirteen years ago only to have it wind up shattered. With painstaking determination, she has rebuilt her life into something to be proud of today. Yet all her future plans are upended when the only man she has ever loved returns to Echo Springs. Nor does it help that he seems bound and determined to draw her back into his life. Cybil vows to stay away from him, no matter what seeing him all the time does to her resolve.

Miles Keaton wiped the dust of his hometown off his shoes years ago, never expecting that life would lead him back to the place where he had begun. Coming home to Echo Springs, to Cybil, to start a new law practice and a new life is a risk he never thought he’d take. She hates him – with good reason. Years ago, he walked away when she needed him the most. But now is he back, and intends to argue the case of his life, one more important than any he has debated in a courtroom, because she is the one woman he cannot live without.

Can Miles convince Cybil to take a second chance on him, or will a secret she has kept all these years destroy any future they might have?

Synopsis
A dead earth, a handful of survivors, and a game that could wipe out humanity.

I was one of the few humans to be saved by the shining ones. Powerful beings who came from the stars just in time to stop the annihilation of mankind. But they’ve been here before.

Earth was once their home and humanity has another name for them. Fae.

Now we live in iron cities paying for haven as workers and conscripted warriors. We owe them after all. Until they ask too much.

The Regency Tournament is about to begin. A test of prowess for the shining ones to determine which House will rule their people for the next century.

And we humans? We’re the prey.

But I didn’t survive earths almost destruction to be hunted like a beast.

If I’m going to go down, then I’ll be taking these pointy eared wankers with me.

And I have an advantage. A shadow companion—protective but tough. My mentor has trained me in the art of survival. With his smooth dulcet tones in my head, and his shadowy form at my back, I’ll no longer be prey.

And when I hunt the shining ones, they won’t even see me coming.

An Urban Fantasy Romance adventure. Experience the magic of the Fae set against a Post-Apocalyptic back drop in a dystopian world.
