Synopsis
The City of Jade Spires, the biggest in the 6-moons, is a breathtaking symbol of hope and unity for the four races. But it’s also a hub of corruption. Holly Drake is proof of that. Fresh out of prison for a mistake framed to look like cold murder, she’s broke, jobless, and branded with a prison record.

When she lands a gig stealing back the Eye of the Colossus jewels, the chance for a big payout means she won’t have to depend on anyone else. She’s never had that kind of freedom. She’ll do it. Even if the work is only a shade lighter than outright crime.

But soon she finds herself pursued by thugs from the Shadow Coalition, an underworld government that wants her dead. Pulling off the heist without getting killed means putting trust in recruits she hardly knows. The clock is ticking to get the jewels, but a mistake now could be fatal. Chasing across the 6-moons to complete the job will test her grit and determination to succeed when everything is stacked against her. More than that, finding out just what secrets the 6-moons hold will either turn her into the hero the moon system needs, or destroy her…

Excerpt #3
“Come watch the ship unmooring,” Odeon said in that gentle song-like voice. “It’s a magnificent vision.”

“I’ll head to the dining room now. I’d like to get a read on it before Holly arrives. Don’t want any Shadow Coalition thugs surprising us.”

“Great idea. Keep me apprised, Shiro” Holly said, feeling better than ever.

She stood next to Odeon and gazed out the window. Kota was off to one side, while the space port took up much of the other side of the view. Above them, fat Ixion hovered, the borders of its famous stripes a bit less defined. Through the translucent windows of the space platform, she could see the colors of the different races and the bazaar type colors of the tents of the shops. Around the curved edge of the port, another ship loomed, waiting to depart. But departure was imminent for the Emerald Pioneer. The metal arm moorings detached and retracted toward the space-port. Soon, Holly caught sight of the solar sails as they unfurled in the storm of solar radiation and aetheric energy. She sensed a slight movement in the ship as the ground beneath her creaked and shifted. But it was very near the threshold of her ability to sense it, and she suspected that if she hadn’t been watching through the window, she’d not have even noticed. The ship retreated from the port and then caught the current and began to move at a steady clip away from Kota and the port, bound for Itzcap, the true paradise of the 6-moons.

Excerpt #2
She put her glass down. “Remember what you said about noble blood?”

Areg furrowed his brow.

“You said it didn’t mean much to you.” Etana gave him a sidelong look. “Is that true?”

His face brightened. “Absolutely. I’d say more—it shouldn’t mean much to anyone.”

“How so?”

“Two weeks ago, you found a loophole in Eia’s laws that none of my noble-born, learned friends had seen.”

She blushed, ridiculously pleased with his praise.

“And then a week later,” he continued, “you showed how strong the Ra was in your blood by transfixing thousands of people.”

The heat in Etana’s cheeks reached her ears, setting them on fire.

“And my blood?” Areg shrugged. “For all I know the Sebis are noble because one of our forefathers knew how to please Queen Glendra III.”

Etana giggled. “Why Queen Glendra III in particular?”

“Because she was… erm, voracious.” He gave her a wink. “She rewarded her most talented lovers by giving them titles and lands.”

Her eyes crinkled with mirth. “Are you saying that the first Lord Sebi was a very talented lover?”

He gave her a lopsided smile that made her want to remove all her clothes right there. It struck Etana that Areg was feeling as elated as she was. Gone was the constant crease between his eyebrows and the sadness that tinted his eyes. He looked carefree, happy to be alive, happy to be with her.

He was flirting with her, for Aheya’s sake.

Etana squinted at him. “Um… Are you saying the lovemaking talent runs in the Sebi blood?”

“As we just established, I don’t believe the Sebi blood is special,” Areg said. “So no, I’m not saying that.”

“Right.” She was unable to hide the disappointment in her voice.

“My talents are mine and mine alone. I don’t owe them to my ancestors. I owe them to years of training and arduous practice.”

“Training?” She bunched her brows, confused. “Arduous practice?”

“I was referring to my marksmanship.”

“Oh.”

His lips twitched as he struggled not to laugh. “Why? What were you imagining, Dame Tidryn?”

Excerpt
His hands still on my face. “I’m sorry,” I manage to say, trying to control a nervous need to giggle like a hyena. “Are we fighting? Maybe I didn’t notice because it’s all we ever seem to do.”

A wicked grin lights his features. “That’s not all we seem to do,” he whispers, seconds before he replaces his thumb with his lips.

It’s a soft kiss at first, tentative. Like someone asking your name. But it lights me up, sending fire shooting through my body, heat curling through my belly. I must sigh because Jared pulls back for just a moment, a question in his eyes and hunger written all over him. Then he claims my lips again, holding my face in his hands as the earth spins away from me.

Excerpt #2
I’m learning to read!

When I look at him, his smile is one of encouragement, but the hunger in his gaze says he’d rather be doing other things with me in bed. I snap my gaze back to the screen.

“Moah,” he says.

“Moo.”

He sighs and puts an index finger on each corner of my mouth to tug it wider. “Moah.”

His fingers are on my lips, and he’s incredibly close. I think my heart stops beating. “Meh.”

He laughs, and I laugh with him. He’s shown not one flicker of impatience. His entire demeanor says he wants nothing more in this world than to help me learn his alphabet. I want him to kiss me so much it hurts.

Bad idea. Can’t happen. It simply can’t happen.

“Moah,” I say. “Does it have meaning beyond the name of the letter?”

“It means mine in the old language. It’s a word of claiming.”

Then his lips are on my lips. And then his arms are around me, and I’m somehow straddling him the next second as he’s kissing me, the lesson forgotten.

So this is kissing.

I have never been kissed like this before. I’ve only had a man’s tongue in my mouth. But this is not a let’s-see-what-it-feels-like kind of deal. Kissing Koah is mutual annihilation. My body is burning up with heat and need.

He is not taking this slowly. He is not taking his time. He is not giving me a chance to get used to the idea that he’s somehow the master of my body.

His large hands cover my hips and he’s holding me in place, pressed against his iron rod between my legs. He only stops the ravaging of my lips to say, “Moah,” in a ragged voice, then he is back to kissing me once again.

An elemental connection pounds to life between us, and I forget everything else. I forget where I am. I forget Earth.

His hands slide down to cup my butt cheeks and he drags me along his thick shaft.

Oh. Ah.

I want this. I want him. I want to give in.

Can Etana transcend everything she knows—transcend life itself—to save him?

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
The massive lash hit Areg Sebi’s bared back anew.

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

Etana Tidryn had never seen a whip like that before. It had multiple tails with knots at each end.

She looked closer, and gulped. The knots had claws. Every single knot was woven with small shards of glass and metal barbs to make it even nastier than it already was.

Raising his arm high above his head, the flogger struck again, hard.

The man on Etana’s left cheered.

The two women on her right unwrapped their bread rolls, bit into them, and began to chew with a single-minded keenness. Their faces reflected a mixture of horror and fascination.

“Still regret skipping breakfast?” the older of the two asked the younger one.

“You joking?” The younger woman smiled. “This show is absolutely worth it!”

Their gazes never left the scaffold while they talked.

Etana turned away from them.

To her relief, few people in the crowd seemed to share her neighbors’ enthusiasm. Many averted their heads, cringing with pity for Lord Sebi. A few brave souls even dared to hum and drone in defiance, risking jail time if the cops found them out. Clearly, they didn’t believe the charges leveled against their hero.

Everything had happened so fast!

Lord Sebi’s reputation had always been unmarred, as clean as the springs on Mount Crog. An heir to a long line of noble-bloods famous for their integrity, he was destined for a great future in Eia.

Then Teteum invaded the realm.

Lord Sebi joined the army and rose to major. His bravery on the battlefield earned him several decorations, including a Golden Double Serpent Wand—Eia’s highest honor. When his parents and younger sister died in a tragic accident, there was no end to letters of sympathy people sent him from all four corners of the realm. Everyone in Eia looked up to him, hung on his every word, admired, and even worshipped him.

And then, a month ago, Police Chief Zorom Ultek arrested him.

The Orogate Daily revealed “the truth” about Areg Sebi, which Etana didn’t believe for a second. Neither did her parents, or her brother and sister. Nor, apparently, many others here in Iltaqa.

The flogger brandished his freak whip again. It laid a long, ragged line of red into Lord Sebi’s broad back. Etana’s cheeks flamed the instant she realized she was ogling the distinctly masculine shape of his back, despite the grim reason it had been exposed.

Divine Aheya, the shame!

But what with Pa being so straitlaced, and her brother Rhori so hopelessly shy, she’d never seen a grown man’s bare upper body before. And Areg Sebi’s was something to behold.

Once more, the whip cracked against Lord Sebi’s back. The knots bit into his flayed skin, peeling strips of it off.

Etana shuddered and gripped Rhori’s arm.

But she didn’t avert her eyes.

The town of Iltaqa hadn’t seen a public punishment in over a year, ever since the “space conmen” floggings.

In the early months of the Teteum invasion, when things looked bad for Eia, four enterprising individuals set up a daring scam. Over several weeks, they sold hundreds of tickets to a bogus rescue transport. The transport was supposed to arrive from Norbal in the neighboring solar system and take the ticket-holding refugees off Hente. Norbal’s booming economy needed the extra workforce and talent, the conmen had explained.

When no transport materialized, the swindled ticket holders—most of them proficients and noble-bloods—reported the scammers to the police. The authorities caught them, confiscated their booty for the war effort, and had them flogged in Town Hall Square.

In retrospect, that punishment looked like a mother’s spanking next to Lord Sebi’s treatment. The whip came down again on the bloody ruin of his back, making him arch and grunt in pain.

Letting go of Rhori’s arm, Etana scrabbled at her chest through the layers of her work apron, dress and underwear until her fingers found her Serpent Coil pendant. She began to stroke the ouroboros, her lips moving in a silent prayer.

Suddenly, a buzz-like sound invaded her ears.

She scanned her surroundings for its source before realizing it was coming from inside her. There were other sounds, too—sounds she hadn’t noticed until that moment. Sparrows chirped in the distance, squirrels scampered up and down the old oak trees across the square, bugs hummed in the lush flowerbeds, and a dog growled in a yard.

Etana felt dizzy.

The air around her, the very air she breathed, acquired a strangely sticky quality. Something invisible wheeled and eddied in the sky over her head.

Divine Aheya only knew why, a childhood memory flashed in Etana’s mind. She saw herself, her parents and Rhori standing around Mayka’s high chair, watching stern-looking vestals examine her baby sister. But the memory was blurry and, for the life of her, Etana couldn’t recall what had gone down that day or why she was recollecting it now.

Could it have something to do with the sultry, fog-like substance condensing above her?

Whatever it was, it spun faster and faster, the whirlpool descending toward her, inexorable.

Suddenly, she was trembling in its eye.

When it burst into her chest like a gale-force wind, she gasped and fought for breath. Except, there was no room in her lungs for air. They were filled to the brim with the mysterious fog.

Etana coughed, desperately trying to rid herself of it. No luck. Her knees wobbled, and just as she was about to faint, the substance left her body, and dissipated without a trace.

A flurry of lash strokes descended on Lord Sebi’s back in quick succession, the whip leaving deep welts rimmed with blood.

Etana swayed and leaned against Rhori, who wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

“Only a couple dozen more,” he whispered in her ear. “It’ll be over soon.”

A couple dozen more.

Etana dug her nails into her palms when the next stroke landed, adding another crimson groove to Lord Sebi’s back.

A man in gold-rimmed black robes stepped forward from the box on the side of the scaffold where notables sat during major events. He raised his hand, commanding everyone’s attention.

Etana had never seen him before. She gave her brother a quizzical look.

“It’s Lord Mahabmet, the high judge,” Rhori said, surveying the man. “I’ve seen his picture in the Gazette. He almost never leaves the capital.”

Etana knitted her brows. “Haven’t you wondered why Lord Sebi is being flogged here and not in Orogate?”

Rhori nodded. “I have, as have all my friends.”

“Orogate is only an hour’s ride from Iltaqa,” Etana went on. “No more than twenty minutes in a motorized vehicle. Why didn’t they transfer Lord Sebi to Old Kingdom Prison? Why isn’t he being flogged in Republic Square?”

On the scaffold, the high judge cleared his throat. “Silence!”

“It simply doesn’t follow,” Etana said, looking up at Rhori.

He pressed his index finger to his mouth. “Shush. Lord Mahabmet is about to say something.”

Etana dutifully shut her mouth. She was a Tidryn, after all. A menial. Shutting up was what menials did every time a noble-born, a priestess, or a proficient opened their mouth.

Etana never understood why the likes of her were considered so vastly inferior to everyone else. It was said that menials had no Ra spark left in them. Not a drop of the ancient Original Race of Xereill. Their blood was thin, all imported, all human.

Except, where was the proof of that?

Not a single book in the Temple Library supported that belief. Menials, just like everyone else on Hente, were cut from the same Ra-human cloth. True, they had no Ra abilities, or “gifts.” Then again, no one on the entire planet did. But it was menials who’d been pushed to the bottom and told they belonged there.

It bothered her.

What bothered her even more was how pliantly other menials—including her family—accepted their fate. Mother and Father believed that the rigid makeup of Hente’s society was what kept things together, what had saved their civilization from falling apart in the wake of the Cataclysm. Rhori believed that, too. Everyone she knew did…

Except for Lord Sebi.

“Townsfolk of Iltaqa!” the high judge bellowed. “I’ve interrupted Areg Sebi’s punishment because I’ve just received a transmission from Governor Boggond!”

He held up a small device in his hand that Etana had never seen before.

Her breath hitched.

Could it be…?

Could it be that the governor’s transmission exonerated Lord Sebi of the terrible accusations that sleazy Chief Ultek had mounted against him?

She tightened her grip on her ouroboros pendant, her body tensing as if her own fate hung in the balance.

“Governor Boggond, who couldn’t be present due to matters of state,” Judge Mahabmet said, “is asking me to recap Areg Sebi’s charges so that all of you present understand their gravity.”

Etana’s heart sank.

The high judge pointed at Lord Sebi. “The man in front of you is not who you thought he was. He is no hero. He’s a traitor. He had colluded with Teteum at the end of the war in a conspiracy to discredit Eia’s legitimate government and Lord Boggond himself.”

“Prove it!” someone shouted from the middle of the crowd.

“Did he confess?” a second voice joined in.

Chief Ultek jumped up from his seat in the box and shouted to his men, “Find those whoresons! Bring them to me!”

“There’s no need, Chief Ultek,” Judge Mahabmet said, gesturing to the cops to stay put. “Those are legitimate questions.”

The crowd grew quiet.

The high judge forced a smile. “I don’t blame those young men. They only voiced what many in Eia are thinking.”

The silence grew laden.

Judge Mahabmet firmed his jaw. “I am not going to lie to you. We don’t have a confession.”

An “ah” tore through the crowd.

“But we don’t need one.” Judge Mahabmet pointed to Ultek. “Chief Ultek’s investigation has uncovered evidence which proves Areg Sebi’s guilt beyond doubt. We will present it to the citizens of Eia shortly, as soon as it is properly cataloged and recorded.”

Rhori gave Etana a disconcerted look as if he didn’t know what to think after that revelation.

She crossed her arms. No, honestly.

Her deferential brother was prepared to believe empty words just because a high-ranking lord had uttered them. Um… all right, a lord who happened to be a respected judge. And not just any judge, but the high judge of the Realm himself, a paragon of fairness and wisdom.

But then why did she, a laundry maid, doubt his words?

Oh, she knew why. Because of the other words spoken by Lord Sebi a few weeks ago in her employer’s house.

Those words had given her wings.

“Remember Lord Sebi’s talk at the Gokk House?” she whispered to Rhori.

He nodded.

“The wonders he described, the possibilities…”

“The amazing level-two tech,” Rhori said, his expression dreamy.

“Remember how harshly he spoke of the caretaker governor?”

Rhori knitted his brows. “What are you saying? You can’t possibly—”

“Resume the flogging!” Judge Mahabmet cried without taking his eyes off the crowd.

The flogger struck with renewed ferocity. Once, twice, three times… Red stripes erupted on either side of Areg Sebi’s spine, blood oozing down their length. His face became a grimace of pain as he groaned, but kept his jaws pressed together.

On the next stroke, his body surged and then fell limp, his head lolling.

Etana turned to her brother. “This is so wrong! I can’t just stand here and watch.”

“What can we do, Etti?” Rhori whispered softly. “What can anyone do to help the poor soul?”

She surveyed the scaffold. Dozens of heavily armed cops stood all around it. Rhori was right. There was nothing anyone—even the strongest and most agile of men—could do to help Areg Sebi.

Nothing at all.

Then why that feeling that she should do something? That she must do something? Because she could.

She screwed up her eyes. It was ridiculous.

Fancying herself a rich-blood endowed with a gift she could harness to rescue Lord Sebi was a folly. For starters, no gift she could conceive of would overpower the town’s entire police force. Besides, she had no gift. No one on Hente had them anymore.

After the Cataclysm, the air of the planet changed, and the radiation emanating from it suppressed all the existing gifts in the survivors. No rich-bloods were ever recorded since then, not even among noble-borns, with ostensibly more Ra blood than the others.

The loss of gifts was how Divine Aheya had punished Hente for its arrogance.

Everyone knew that.

As did Etana.

And that whirlwind she’d felt earlier? It had been just a panic attack. Or, worse—a figment of her imagination, a childish fantasy that she was special. Like the Gokks’ youngest, Benty, who would cover his eyes with his plump little hands and declare he was invisible.

The grown-ups and his older siblings would humor him. “Where is Benty?” they’d ask. “He’s gone. I can’t see him. Where did he disappear to?” The boy would squeal and clap his hands in delight before opening his eyes. “Bam! I’m back!”

That kind of delusion of power could be forgiven in a young child, even encouraged to an extent. But it was unpardonable in someone like her.

The flogger’s final blow shook Lord Sebi’s dangling body without drawing so much as a twitch from it.

He was unconscious.

The high judge stepped forward once again. “We are done for today. Areg Sebi will receive fifty more lashes here in Town Hall Square in exactly one week, next Firstday, the twenty-sixth of Mid-Summer, Xer-year 701 of the New Ra-human Era.”

The crowd rumbled, appalled.

“The man needs to recover!” someone shouted.

“You can’t do that!” Etana heard herself yell.

Several heads turned toward her, and Rhori gave her a round-eyed look.

“Oh, but we can and, given the gravity of his crime, we certainly will,” Judge Mahabmet said. “Unless he confesses between now and next Firstday.”

He wouldn’t. Etana was sure of it.

“But, confession or no,” the judge added, raising his voice, “my colleagues and I will return with a verdict on Areg Sebi by then. It will be announced here, next Firstday.”

“What do you think it would be?” Etana whispered to Rhori.

“For high treason?” He gave her an apologetic look as if to say, you know what.

“Death,” she said on an exhale.

“They never move this fast.” Rhori knitted his brows. “Even court-martials during the war didn’t move this fast.”

Etana hardly heard him.

Her mind was on fire, scrambling for options, for something, for anything she could do for Areg Sebi.

Perhaps…

She clenched her jaws, determined.

Tonight, as soon as she finished work at the Gokk House, she’d go to the temple. She’d beg the vestals to let her spend the night, and every night between now and the twenty-sixth, in their library. She’d read every code and custom book, every law, every compilation of decrees and edicts they had in there.

Since rescuing Lord Sebi through an imaginary gift was a nonstarter, perhaps there was a doable way to ease his suffering.

Maybe she’d find a law which forbade convicting a citizen of Eia, no matter his crime, without a proper trial and without a chance to defend himself. Failing that, she might uncover a ruling which prohibited giving anyone—even a convicted traitor—more lashes than the Ra-human body could endure.

Or maybe something else, completely unexpected.

If there was anything at all that could help Lord Areg Sebi, even in a tiny way, she’d find it.

She had to.

Synopsis
Since the day his family was murdered, Boris has been obsessed with vengeance. The last thing he needs in his life is a mate. Besides, what sort of female would want a scarred, crippled male who has taken a vow of silence? Nope, there is no room in his life for a female.
Then he meets Nassir.

Beautiful. Fragile. Distant. He wants to break through the barriers she keeps erecting to discover the real woman inside. Which might be easier if he wasn’t constantly pulling her out of danger.

On the run, hunted, and alone, Nassir knows she only has herself to rely on.

Until Boris comes back into her life. The dark one. The silent, watchful bodyguard whose gaze heats her from the inside out and whose touch drives her insane.

Excerpt #1
“No! Get away from her!” She forced herself to her feet, plastering a fierce look on her face, trying to ignore the weakness invading her body. She pointed away from them. “Go! Get away.”

“But ssshe tasste ssso good.”

Oh no. No way.

She took a step closer to the creature. “She does not taste good. She tastes like fresh flooga poop.” And Nassir should know how bad that tasted.

“I think I’ve just been insulted.” Nassir made the mistake of moving her gaze off the creature to Zoey as the other woman sat, holding her hand to her head with a groan. “I know you’re just trying to defend me, but really? Flooga poo? God, I have a killer headache. Hope I had an amazing good night to go with this thumping headache. Too much Sola?”

Suddenly, Nassir realized that rather than moving on, the creature had decided to try his luck and lick Zoey again while Nassir’s attention was elsewhere.

“Eww, gross. Bad lizard, bad!” Zoey smacked her hand against the tongue. “Bad boy! Zoey is not a treat! Zoey is a person and she doesn’t like to be licked. Well, I guess that’s not entirely true, but an Empress isn’t allowed to be crude.”

Synopsis
On her untamed gift hinges the future of a planet—and her lover’s life…

A month ago, ex-army Major Areg Sebi was thrown into prison. Now he’s on the scaffold, laying his head on the block.  No public trial for the disgraced war hero. No cyborgs from the League of Realms to whisk him away. No help. No escape.

A priestess chants a prayer for the major’s soul, even as a judge cries out, “Death to the traitor!”

In the crowd below, laundry maid Etana Tidryn stares into Areg’s eyes. His lips were hot against hers last night. His hands roamed her body, worshipped her, pleasured her.

She’s falling for him, hard and fast. She’s still hoping, even if he’s given up…

Can Etana transcend everything she knows—transcend life itself—to save him?

Can she rise to meet her destiny?

She had to.

Synopsis
Alone. Abandoned. Threatened. Natalie has lost all hope for a better future. Everything she’s known and everyone she’s ever loved is gone, and it’s up to her to get her old life back. In Michael Evans’s first novel, Control Freakz, Natalie’s journey toward a better life begins.

When Protocol 00 is enacted, Natalie’s family is taken by the government, along with the families of her two best friends, Ethan and Hunter. With nothing to lose, and the threat of government hitmen kidnapping them at any moment, the three must battle to survive in a horrid, post-apocalyptic world run by President Ash and his invasive government. They want answers. And they’re willing to jeopardize everything in desperate pursuit.

Risking ruthless leaders, attempted mind control, and her very existence on the planet, Natalie, along with Hunter and Ethan, will stop at nothing in their quest to regain everything they’ve ever known. Her spirits crushed and her will to live destroyed, Natalie knows everything is dead and gone, and soon she will be, too.

Memories connect us to the past, and can often cause us to long for a better future, but they can drive our minds into a state of hell if a better future is unattainable. Nevertheless, Natalie’s hope for a better a future remains.

Excerpt
Hunter and I followed him into the oversized storm drain that served as the main runoff for most of the water on the golf course. The concrete surrounding us was ominously dark, and the air had a thick mustiness to it that instantly caused chills to run down my spine. We made it! I exhaled, releasing my fear and anxiety in the form of carbon dioxide. Finally, with my tongue devoid of all moisture and my legs absolutely exhausted, I let my body collapse against the concrete behind me. And in the same moment I felt the fleeting adrenaline from my system, it all hit me.

Holy shit. I grabbed onto Hunter as the true magnitude of our situation began to smack me. Everything is falling apart. We are screwed! I looked up at Hunter through the film of tears and tried to let his blue eyes and firm body comfort me. But it was no use.

I screamed, so viciously and so ferociously, that I swear it must have been the sound of my inner demons desperately crawling out of me. A tidal wave of emotions suddenly washed over me as I began to drown in despair, shock, anger, and pure terror. The tears soon followed, as they always did, and started to pour out of me uncontrollably, like water from a fire hydrant.

I could feel the blackness start to overcome me as I started to drown in my emotions. I buried my head in Hunter’s shirt and I felt his body start to shake while he hugged me tightly. And for the longest time we both just sat there, and I cried, and I cried, and I cried until my body could no longer produce anymore tears. And even after I had broken past that threshold, I still managed to cry again as my reality settled over me like a perpetual thunderstorm.

That day, my whole life was stolen from me. And I don’t know if I will ever get it back.

Synopsis
Two dimensions – And the girl who connects them.

Yesterday, Drea Smith couldn’t do anything spectacular—even walking and texting at the same time was a challenge. But today, she suddenly has more answers than Google, can speak and understand numerous languages, and she can fight. Like a boss.

Super freaky.

Drea has no idea where her encyclopedic knowledge has come from, but she’ll take it when she discovers someone out there knows her secret and wants her badly. And that they’ve been searching for her since she was born.

Since she was created.

With the help of her best friend Dylan, who just wants to keep her safe, and Maddox, a mysterious new boy who is prepared to get her answers, Drea will have to push her new skills to their limit as she uncovers nothing is quite what it seems.

As she uncovers…Eugenica.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt #1
A young girl marches out of one of the houses up the hillside on my right, and onto a porch. Her gaze floats across the very cluster of trees I’m standing in. I take a nervous step back deeper into them to make sure she can’t see me. My feet crunch through something—a dead plant. The grass to my left has met the same fate, and is brown and lifeless. That’s strange. It looks so out of place. How is this part dead when everything else around it is so green, so alive?

A dull ache develops in my head, but I don’t focus on it. Instead, I watch the girl. She sings a little song, and a shudder runs through me. It seems silly to be afraid. She’s so small, and I’m too far to catch all the words, but it’s something about the stars. Her hair’s so blonde it appears almost white as it cascades over her shoulders and down the back of her gray jumpsuit. The moonlight reflects against a symbol over her heart, but I can’t make out what it is. And my eyes force themselves closed when I try to get a better look.

My knees start to shake as she swipes her hand in the air, and what looks like a computer screen appears in front of her. Just like what happened to the man in my dream. The girl gazes up to the sky and back to her screen while flipping through pages of star charts. Finally, she seems satisfied and uses her finger to draw connecting lines between the stars on the chart, Andromeda. Then with a wave of her hand she moves her drawing above her head toward the sky. I follow her actions and see the same constellation she’s looking at above us.

Wow. That’s incredible.

I need to find Dylan and Maddox. I need to tell them—show them this place. With them here, I wouldn’t feel so scared. They’re never going to believe it. I barely believe it, and it’s right in front of me. But it’s here, and so am I.

Before I can move, a man with the same stark white hair, wearing a black jumpsuit, walks out of the house behind the little girl. “What did you discover?” His voice is so refined, each word spoken so clearly, but it still makes my skin crawl. I take a step back. He turns in my direction. My heart jumps into my throat, and I suck in a mouthful of air. Even hidden in the trees I feel vulnerable, exposed.

“Probably an intoxicated Stultusian tripped the Entry System Sensor. They could not have gotten too far,” a man’s rough voice says to my left and there’s a sharp pain in my temples.

Two figures down to the left march up the hill. I crouch lower to the ground and duck behind a bush to stay out of their view. Up to my right, the white-haired man ushers the little girl back in the house and the light inside goes dark.

The two men stop less than ten feet from me where the dense brush I’m hiding in starts. One man is much broader than the other. Both are wearing black jumpsuits, and their heavy boots thud against the ground with each step. My heart pounds against my chest just as loud, if not louder. I clench my hands against it to drown out the sound and stumble back farther to hide behind one of the trees.

“Has this portal to Stultus always been here?” the smaller man asks. His voice is deeper, huskier.

“Yes, and only a few Eugenicans know about it. You will learn about the other portals when you complete training.” They both stop walking, and the bigger guy presses something that looks like computer buttons on his sleeve that light up under his touch.

My head aches, or more like burns. Whatever these guys are talking about makes my brain feel like it’s being run against a cheese grater.

“What protocol do we follow?” The other man pulls out a flashlight and shines it in the brush. The light dances in front of me, slowly crawling my way.

I’m paralyzed by fear. They’re less than ten feet away; even if I could move, I don’t know where I’d go. I don’t even know where I am, or how I got here.

“Order 2-31-D.” He glances up from his sleeve to the other man. “Recite.”

The man clips his light onto his holster belt, pushes his shoulders back, and clicks his heels together. “We subdue the subject and administer one to three cc’s of Serum Memoriata to the internee’s biceps. After which, we immediately extricate.”

“Excellent. Now let us get to work.”

They each pull out a flashlight and push their way through the brush, in my direction. My head throbs so hard I have to clench my jaw to keep from screaming out, or worse, throwing up.

Crunch.

Crunch.

They push closer and closer.

This is it. I’m dead.

Excerpt #4
I put my hand on the side of his face, and he closed his eyes, resting his tight jaw deeper into my palm. The pain in his expression seemed to drift away. Falling into my hand like rain.

My pulse pounded steady in my ears. His lips less than an inch away. I ran my finger over those lips. Soft and full and just a slight bit dry that made me suddenly thirsty. I leaned forward, for the first time unsure of what to do. Kissing other guys had never made me nervous like this before. Kissing other guys had never made me shiver.

I brushed my lips against his. Testing. Waiting. Then he kissed me back. Slow. His mouth closing around mine and pulling me in. Dragging out every second.

It was the kind of kiss that felt like forever. Every touch, every taste, stretching out and lingering, lazy as if time didn’t exist. His tongue running along my lips. My fingertips brushing against the ends of his hair at the nape of his neck. Every sensation, a swirling heat under my skin, winding me higher and higher.

And then I fell. Down, down, down into all those emotions I’d dismissed because in this world there were no happy endings. Futures here were never certain. But right then, with his teeth grazing against my tongue and his hands gripping tight on my hips, everything seemed possible.

Excerpt
I get to the game early and weave through the rowdy crowd wearing our school colors, black and turquoise. Some guys really go all out for these games and paint their shirtless bodies, spelling out the word P-A-N-T-H-E-R-S on their chests. Others wear costumes or headbands with cat ears. It’s pretty tame compared to our football games. Those are completely overly exaggerated affairs.

I skip the concession stand to grab a few seats away from my regular spot. As much as I’d love to snack on some licorice, and the popcorn smell that floats in the air makes my stomach growl, I’m ready for some answers from Maddox, and I don’t need any distractions.

Trumpets blare. The band starts to play, and the cheerleaders wave their pom-poms as the team lines up to run onto the field. My phone chirps, just as the band breaks into our fight song.

Maddox:

Where are you?

I ignore the cheerleaders’ plea to repeat “time to fight, time to win,” and text him back telling him where to find me.

This is it. My chance to get some answers. Except my hands are shaking, and my knee is bouncing like crazy. While I wait for him, I try to get my nerves under control and check out who showed up for the game near my regular seat. I spot a few people who only come to games occasionally. They don’t even know the rules, they just cheer when everyone else does. Nadia’s here, too, except she’s abandoned her usual pink hoodie for a regular school one that looks like the one I have on. And her normally gorgeous flowing dark hair is wrapped up in a messy bun, like mine. I don’t even have the time to think about what she’s playing at.

I roll my eyes and then immediately jerk back. No. It can’t be. Two rows behind her are piercing green eyes.

Blood drains from my face and redirects to my pounding heart; I have to grip the bench to stay upright. The rest of the crowd seems to disappear, and I’m alone staring at a man dressed all in black. Scared can’t begin to describe this. My breath is ripped from my chest, and I feel like I’m suffocating as I focus on the crescent-shaped scar on his face. Shit. No. He can’t be here. Not real, not real. He’s just my imagination.

But a woman slides past him, stumbles, and catches herself on his shoulder. She smiles apologetically, and he mumbles something back. I’m frozen in fear. Fireworks explode in my chest. Shit, shit, shit. He is real. And he’s really here. I shrink back into the crowd in my row, but I don’t take my eyes off him. He’s always appeared and vanished like a flash, but now he’s sitting here, right next to the space I usually fill. No way it’s a coincidence. He keeps turning his head in every direction, and a thought sinks in my stomach. He’s looking for me. That’s when my fear morphs into something more.

When you’re a spy with special abilities, you do what you must to save the ones you love—even if that means killing. Jade didn’t choose this life, it chose her.

Twelve years ago, Assassins forever changed Jade Saito’s world with flames and bullets. She was saved by the Dream Walker Division, a covert branch of the CIA consisting of people like her—agents with the ability to dream themselves into another’s reality as unseen observers. They also happen to be stronger, faster, and have photographic memories, making them optimal spies.

Now Jade is a field agent for the DWD where she and her unit use their abilities to take down criminal organizations. When DWD leaders start turning up dead, the compound is shaken to its core. If the leaders of the DWD aren’t safe from Assassins, no one is. But the deeper Jade digs the more she realizes not everything is as it seems. Will Jade stop the Assassins before it’s too late? Or will they they murder everyone she loves—again?

.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
When fighting, I think about nothing but the moment. There’s no room for obsessing over the Assassins, being depressed over Brooks, or mad at Shea for wanting to leave. There’s only my opponent and me. Defeat or be defeated. I want to drag out the fight, use it as an escape. Some people revert to alcohol and drugs for escape, I use ass-kicking.

“I’ll take you down even with my gimp arm and without using pressure points,” I say.

Shawn’s smile spreads. “Ooohh, them’s fightin’ words. That’s a lot of talk for a buck-ten shorty.”

As I re-wrap my gloves, I gaze at Shawn with a wicked grin. “You forget who you’re talking to.” Shawn might have more muscle in his one bicep than I do in both of mine combined, but I can still beat him. It’s all about physics, about knowing how to use one’s weight to one’s own advantage. This is going to be fun.

I finish strapping on my gear and join Shawn in the ring. Paramore blares through the speakers and the recruits shout encouragement at us. We meet in the center and tap knuckles. Shawn gives me a wink. I laugh.

We dance around each other––backs rounded, chins down, guards up––waiting for the other to strike. Shawn is skilled and with his strength, he could knock me out with one good strike. He’s also much slower than I and tends to tire out faster. Even with working myself harder in warm-up, I have better stamina than him.

He throws a right jab. I easily dodge out of the way, light on my toes. Next he throws a combo: right jab, left hook and round house. I sidestep the jab, knock the hook away and duck under the roundhouse. I take advantage of him being on one leg and sweep his stationary leg out from under him. Shawn falls to his back with a thud, his eyes wide. I let him jump back to his feet. Although I could have, I’m not ready to end it.

Ten minutes later, Shawn’s breathing is labored. We’ve both gotten some hits in, but nothing either of us can’t recover from quickly. I see my next opening when he throws a hook followed with a spinning back kick. Not the smartest move when you’re already winded, so really, he deserves what’s coming.

As soon as Shawn’s back is to me I throw a hard kick to the back of his knee sending him to the floor in mid-kick. I jump on his back and initiate a rear naked choke hold. My arm is wrapped around his neck, under his chin, and secured into place with the other one so I don’t slip off from the sweat. My wound burns like hell, but I refuse to give up. I have him. I push his head into the crook of my arm and squeeze tighter. My arms look like a milky cobra against his dark skin.

“You better tap,” I say, out of breath. “I have no problem putting you to sleep, big guy.”

Shawn grunts, struggling to get free. I add more pressure until he finally taps. I release him and collapse on my back next to him.

“Good workout,” I say, and slap him on the shoulder. “I told you that you had no chance today.”

“Damn, girl,” Shawn says between breaths. “I feel sorry for whoever pissed you off. By the way, you’re bleeding through.”

I look at the bandage on my arm. A red blotch is staining the white cloth.

“Great, probably busted a stitch.”

“I’m trying not to gain any satisfaction from it.” He rubs his head. “If I have to lose, at least I know it’s hard on you.”

My music suddenly stops in the middle of a song. I lift my head to see Shea standing at the radio. Shea and I glare at each other for a moment. Ugh, why can’t she just follow the rules? Yeah it sucks sometimes. Brooks’s hurt eyes flash in my mind and pain explodes in my heart again. Really sucks. But that’s how it is in our world. Breaking the gaze, I get up and peel off my sparring gear.

Shawn whistles a long note, looking from Shea to me and back again. “Now that’s a fight I wouldn’t mind seein’. You all are pissed.” He chuckles. “Chick fights are hot. Can we throw in some mud? Or oil?” He nods his head. “Definitely oil.”

“Shut up, Shawn!” Shea says, rolling her eyes.

“I’m just sayin’. It would make you feel better if you hashed it out.” He spreads his hands and shrugs his large shoulders. “Well, at least it would make me feel better.”

“Shawn,” I warn.

“Can’t blame a brother for tryin’.”

As I grab a bottled water from the gym fridge, Shea and I continue to ignore one another. I head for the door, glancing down at my bleeding arm. After my shower, I’ll need to make a stop at the infirmary. I step out the door and almost run smack into Carol Breakenridge, head of the Europe DWD. She brushes off her jacket like I ruined it. Her blond hair is pulled away from her face, accentuating her angular features and large blue eyes.

I back away from her. “Sorry, ma’am.”

She crosses her arms across her chest. “Yes, you should be,” she says in a clipped tone heavy with a French accent.

“It was an accident,” I reply in a less friendly way. “I didn’t see you.” Head or not, between being ignored earlier and my all-around crappy day, I’m about out of patience.

“I was referring to that display in there,” she says raising her chin at the gym. “Why did you not finish him when you had the chance?” She apparently watched the fight and must have seen when I let Shawn get up. “You should never hold back your strengths. If you do, you may die.”

We were just training, working out. It’s not like we were in a real fight. Even though I’m annoyed with her overreaction, I nod and give her the respect I should. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I would have done better had I known you were watching.”

She drops her voice to a whisper, and raises a perfectly waxed brow, “Dear Jade, you are always being watched,” she smiles slyly. “Analyzed. Your actions may affect more than just you.” She turns and walks away, leaving me with an uneasy feeling. I’ll be more than glad when the Heads leave.
