Excerpt
I wait for him here at the place where the night sky and the earth become lovers.  In the tall grass of our homeland, between two kingdoms, we meet.

Getting here early is easier than slipping away late, especially now when life in my village is bustling with the preparations for our wedding in just three days.

But as the reeds lick the backs of my calves, I know that this is only one part of the reason I wait.

The truth is that I like to feel him coming.  At this hour, when my imagination reigns over every shape and whisper, I can almost see him walking on limbs taller and stronger than mine will ever be.  He cuts through the night that hides his slightly lighter shade and stalks his prey.  I cannot hear his approach, but I feel him drawing near, compelled by the same force that holds me where I stand—the scent of my desire in the air.

I close my eyes and breathe deeply, imagining I can taste him, too.  The flavor is salt, sweet grass, and home.  It fills my senses and makes me thirsty.

On the outside, my knees shake and my heart pounds, impatient for its mate, while the deepest part of me grows calm and still—stretching towards the peace that only his presence brings.

And he’s close now, so close.

Synopsis
Daisy Kirkwood and her best friend Kammie have adjusted to life on an alien planet pretty well, all things considered. And thanks to Daisy’s alien pop star boyfriend, Griffin Valentino, she has plenty of sexy new experiences to keep her busy. But it’s not possible to take a massive music nerd away from her home planet and not expect her to pine for a concert or a record store at least in once in a while.

Heading back to Earth with Griffin and his best friend Dev for a brief but much-needed visit, the girls want nothing more than to catch up on the underground music scene of New York City. Unfortunately, thanks to Griffin’s less-than-stellar space traveling skills, they accidentally pick up a hitchhiker. Or three hundred. Their many-legged stowaway beasties take up residence in the darkest, creepiest corners of Manhattan, leaving the gang no choice but to experience a very different underground than they bargained for.

Giant alien bugs aside, Griffin has some epic plans of his own for their trip, plans that involve a concert, an album… and the most outrageous marriage proposal that Earth has ever seen.

Excerpt #2
Space travel has long been theorized. We’ve imagined cheerfully zipping about in spaceships, jumping from point A to B by way of mysterious wormholes. We’ve also imagined going into a deep sleep for thousands of years, while our families and friends back home get old, blow themselves up, and allow Earth to be reclaimed by vines and wild animals.

But Kalesstrians walk through space from location to location.

It’s a very complicated process that Dev has tried to explain to me several times. I’ve only absorbed it in the barest bones of theory, despite his valiant attempts. We walk through a dimension door and are shot to a pre-set coordinate on the other side. The travel has to be conducted with the help of communicators, and it is crucial that the coordinates are right. That last bit is especially important, because ending up in space, an active volcano, or a politician’s bedroom is not something anyone wants.

This is precisely why Griffin traveling us back makes me so nervous.

“Where did you set us to land?” I ask as we all head outside together to the predetermined launch spot. I glance skyward several times, a habit I’ve formed while living on Kalesstria. The weather here is unpredictable and extremely dangerous at times, so one can never be too careful. “Please tell me nowhere too populated.”

“Well, we’re not going to Chinatown again, that’s for certain,” Griffin says with a traumatized expression. “Last time I went there, a man tried to keep me in his shop and sell me for ten American dollars.”

I eyeball his floral pants. “Were you wearing that? Because if so, he marked you up way too much.”

Griffin shoots me a nasty look and ruffles his hair. “I was not. I was wearing a black jacket with feathers, and some very fitted Diesel jeans, thank you very much. I looked bloody enchanting.”

“What were you doing in Chinatown, anyway?” Kammie asks, setting her bags down.

“Daisy needed hairspray.” Now Griffin looks a bit guilty, toeing at the dusty ground with one red cowboy boot. “And I wanted to get a fortune cookie.”

Now that I think about it, I’d told Griffin one night about how delicious Chinese food is, and how a fortune cookie comes with every meal. He’d had a lot of questions about it.

Kammie motions at him. “Well, did you get a fortune cookie?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

Griffin’s face blossoms red with a blush. “I don’t remember. Anyway, I need to finish setting our coordinates.” He fishes his communicator out of his pocket and nervously taps away at it.

Kalesstrian ‘communicators’ do a little bit of everything; they capture holopics and holovids, and operate as super-crazy advanced cell phones. They’re also necessary for long-distance travel. If Apple ever catches wind of them, they’ll definitely break Steve Jobs’ cryo-corpse out of its hiding place and bring him back to life just to patent the iCommunicator. I still barely understand how to turn one on, never mind use it for travel.

“C’mon, Griff,” Kammie insists. “You’re not the type who would forget your first fortune cookie. Besides, I want to know. I’m good at interpreting things like this.”

Of course she would say that. Kammie is a bit of a conspiracy-theory connoisseur, and she dabbles in all sorts of weird beliefs about angels, Bigfoot, aliens, and cryptic messages in newspaper clippings. If there’s some kind of superstition, legend, or conspiracy involved in anything, Kammie probably owns four books on the subject.

Griffin raises his eyes from his communicator, pursing his lips. He hesitates a little longer, and then finally huffs. “It said, Don’t forget to close the door behind you. There now, see? It’s nothing cool at all. I don’t believe in fortune cookies.”

Kammie shrugs. “Still, I’d be careful to make sure you always close doors behind you.”

Synopsis
Daisy Kirkwood has only just escaped her small-town life and run away to New York City, the land of last-minute secret gigs at famous musical venues, when she’s kidnapped by aliens. Unfortunately, no one ever writes about how to handle alien abduction in those fancy NYC guidebooks.

Griffin and Dev are supermassively sexy aliens from a politically and environmentally troubled planet who arrive on Earth with very little knowledge about human ways other than what they learned from a wayward E! News signal. Their mission is to pretend to be the most influential people on the planet—English pop stars, of course!—and gain the help of a powerful secret society. Upon arriving, they abduct Daisy Kirkwood, a nerdy young woman who loves music but could seriously use a bit of help in the love-life department. Though Griffin and Daisy initially squabble, neither can deny the intergalactic sparks whenever they’re too close to each other. Together, they must face murderous aliens, cultural misunderstandings, bad backup musicians, and the dark side of fame and the media, all set against a tight deadline…

Part High Fidelity, part Bridget Jones’ Diary, part Doctor Who, Dating an Alien Pop Star is a sexy romantic comedy..

Excerpt
My legs wobble as I step into the now lukewarm water. I sink to the bottom. Tiny bubbles escape my nose as I watch all the ugly remnants from the last seven years leave my body.

Lungs burning, I rise and come face-to-face with Pit Boy.

I glare at him. “You really have to work on the knocking thing.”

Despite the fact that I’m indecent, his attention never falls from my face. I almost wish it would, just to give me a break from the intensity of his focus.

“I only get a few more hours to be the ‘one-eyed freak’ from the pit. Might as well take advantage.” He doesn’t dare crack a smile, so it’s hard to tell if he’s joking or serious.

“Don’t worry. In my heart, that’s exactly who you’ll always be.”

His words remind me that soon we’ll be reconstructed using forbidden nanotech. But it won’t just be our flesh they’ll reengineer. It will be our brains, too.

I don’t foresee my rewiring being too complicated, but Riser needs to upload almost twenty years of false memories. That will be tricky and time-consuming.

And time is the one thing we don’t have.

Riser flicks his gaze to the mirror. He lifts a hand, touches the patch of mottled flesh where his eye should be.

“How did it happen?” I ask.

“Careful, my lady.” His gaze settles on my face. “You’re beginning to sound like you care.”

I roll my eyes. “And I thought was lacking in conversational skills.”

He focuses his attention on the graffiti sprayed across the mirror.

“It’s written language,” I blurt, even though all I want to do is end the conversation so Pit Boy can leave. His presence unnerves me more than the other Pit Leeches ever could. “It’s how we communicate.”

“I know what it is.” He examines his jagged thumbnail. “I just . . . can’t read it.”

“It’s just stuff about the Chosen. You know, insults.” The populace is finicky. As much as they love watching the Chosen with their petty intrigues and court life, they would be just as happy to see their heads on a pike.

“Chosen?”

Time to explain what you are, Everly, Nicolai’s voice grates inside my head. Riser’s eyes flutter just enough that I know he’s heard Nicolai’s voice too.

You do it, I think, watching Riser’s reaction. But his face remains emotionless; either he’s a good actor or only Nicolai can hear my response.

“The Royalist astronomers discovered the asteroid twenty-one years ago,” I begin. “It’s actually a slow moving planet called an earth-crosser, meaning its orbit and ours intersect every twenty-thousand years. Usually it’s too far away to affect us, but this time it will pass close enough to wreak havoc and make the earth uninhabitable for years.” I stir the water with my big toe. “Before I was born, the Emperor decided that creating a population of genetically superior humans would be a great idea, you know, just in case the Caskets don’t work or the asteroid does more damage than predicted.”

Riser’s hyper-focused gaze bores through me. “You’re one of them?”

“Yes.” I run my hand through the filthy water. “But my father’s a Bronze, so even though my mother comes from a Gold House, the Emperor only allowed them one Chosen instead of the customary twins. So it’s just me . . . not Max.”

“What makes being Chosen so special?”

“I don’t know . . .” I bite my lip, trying to remember everything my parents told me. “My genes are perfect, I guess.”

For some reason, talking about my body makes me remember that I am naked in a room with a boy. As if reading my mind, Riser slowly lets his gaze fall, his expression both curious and unapologetic as he takes me all in, his thoughts cryptic.

“What are you staring at?” I blurt, smashing my breasts beneath my hands. Not like there’s much there to cover. “Haven’t you seen a naked girl before?”

A smile twitches his lips. “Not one that’s genetically flawless.”

“It doesn’t work that way! You can’t just look at us and tell. We look like everyone else—”

“No.” Riser shakes his head, a dark swath of hair covering his damaged eye. “You don’t. Whatever you are.”

“You must be happy . . . about our reconstruction, I mean,” I mumble, trying desperately to change the subject. “They’ll fix your eye . . . and . . . and all those horrible scars.”

I freeze as he slides off the counter, unable to look away as he hooks one finger beneath his shirt and lifts.

Scars ravage his anemic body in varying shades of red and silver and white. Some deep and pitted like the craters of a far-away planet, others smooth and neat. One particular nasty scar carves down his shoulder, tunneling across his chest and stomach. A fresh red wound nestles just below his throat.

He carefully touches the long ugly one. “I’m not ashamed for surviving.”

Part I: In The Beginning
1754 ~ Gold Coast, Ghana

On the outside, my knees shake and my heart pounds, impatient for its mate, while the deepest part of me grows calm and still—stretching towards the peace that only his presence brings.

And he’s close now, so close.

***

When we were children, Ekow was such a scrawny thing.  I used to like to wrestle him just to beat him, just to prove that I could.  I was young, determined and more than a little jealous of the physical prowess of my older brothers.  Secretly, I wanted to be like them, but my youngest brother, Kofi, was already 10 years my senior by the time I could walk.  With Ekow, I knew I’d finally found a way to prove that no boy could match me.

My laughter rumbles in the stillness as I think of it.  Oh, how angry he would be every time I beat him!  And in the beginning, there were many, many times when I did.  He would get so upset that his ears would twitch.  He would stomp away from his defeat with his hands balled up in knobby little fists—eyes glaring, ears twitching, while one of our elders cackled nearby with me sticking out my tongue. We didn’t see each other often enough for me to beat him every day, but I looked forward to it whenever I could.  I was always stronger than I looked, and even when he grew a little taller than me, his limbs seemed to flail awkwardly about him so that he was never quite coordinated.  And in my delicious reign as his tormentor, time seemed to stretch on forever, until one day, it stopped.

I remember the sun burned low in the sky that day as the dust and amber light conspired against me in swirling fits that stung my eyes.  Rolling around on the ground, I was shocked to find myself panting for air.  Suddenly, his legs overpowered me.  I couldn’t throw him the way I had been able to before.  His grip was a vice that I had to sweat to free myself from, and even then, he could catch me again, quickly—too quickly for my liking.

Unable to break free, I grunted and cursed as he pinned me down on my back.  At first, I refused to meet his gaze.  Beneath my eyelashes, I could swear I saw my own taunting smirk, the same one I had given him year after year, curling the corners of his lips.  Enraged, I shut my eyes and kicked my legs furiously, all to no avail.  I could feel the muscles of his powerful thighs holding me in place without the slightest indication of strain, and I couldn’t stand it.

As if sensing the scream that would send my brothers flying to my aid, he suddenly lifted his body from mine, then leaned over to adjust his grip so that our hands were stretched out above my head, palm to palm, fingers intertwined in the grass and the dirt beneath us.

How did I not know, even then . . . ?

Something about the gesture was so strange that it distracted me from my fury.  The feel of his hands pressed firmly into mine made my stomach flutter and clench in a way that was startling, but not unpleasant.

“Ama,” he called.  “Ama, don’t scream.  Ama, please, surrender.”

It must have been the “surrender” that made my eyes fly open to meet his in absolute indignation.

Sometimes I like to think that if I’d never opened my eyes, it never would have happened, but this is, of course, foolish.  I was meant to see.

I looked up to find him staring down at me.  The smirk I’d feared was nowhere in sight.

Instead, his eyes held the same wariness I felt as I looked back at him, then quickly dissolved into something I’d never seen in him before.

He eyed my mouth with what I understand now as a mixture of surprise and captivation.  Back then, I still had no idea what was happening, but as his gaze lingered, I began to feel that someone was seeing me truly for the first time in my life.  I remember fighting the nameless emotion that closed my throat and pricked my eyes.

“Ama, surrender,” he whispered, “Please.”

And that’s when I understood that I held him in place as much as he held me.

“Please,” he said again, and I finally realized what I needed to do all along.

Seeing the answer there in my eyes, he released my hands and rose to his feet.  I remember averting my eyes against the sudden rush of loneliness that came as he left.  But at the corner of my vision, I saw it, his hand extended out to help me up.  He’d done it before, even as I beat him and he’d risen in defeat while I remained holding my belly in victorious laughter on the ground.  I’d always ignored the gesture until that moment, when suddenly it felt like the most natural thing in the world to accept his help.

When I finally stood, I noticed for the first time that he’d grown at least 10 inches since the last time I saw him.

Despite my daze, I frowned.  “You’re taller than me,” I said in dismay.

“No, Ama,” he replied.  Ekow’s voice was deep, yet gentle as he stepped forward to take my other hand in his.  “Now, we are exactly the same height.”

I was 11 years old; Ekow was 13, and after that, nothing between us was ever the same.

Excerpt
“Come out,” he said, low and furious. “Come close. Give me the chance to kill you this time.”

The figure slipped out of the shadows.

It was Talia.

Relief crashed through his body like a wave, filling his eyes with moisture and choking the back of his throat. Impossible, because he was stented. But the impossible feeling built and built, wave on top of wave, until his blurred eyes couldn’t see through the salty water and his whole body relaxed and gave in, blinking streaks matching the sweat dripping down his cheeks from his forehead.

She looked better. Tall and strong, fearless and determined, and with a heart the size of the entire planet. The chest that contained it was pretty nice too, with slim hips and thick, grippable thighs, and breasts that begged for his palms, and a mouth that promised wonders for a long, hot night.

His cock twitched to life.

Also impossible.

But impossible or not, his insistent erection pressed against his ripped flight suit, just like it had all those weeks ago when he had last seen her.

His stents worked perfectly until the moment Talia got too close. Not anyone else. Just Talia.

Then they stopped working and he was flooded with emotions, wrecked with them.

She was alive.

“Thanks for the warning,” she said, reacting to his comment for the CO.

He barely heard her. “Are you okay?”

“Fine.”

She was wearing an exoskeleton cinched around the waist, and she slid forward smoothly, on the power of a hover disk. Her normally golden face looked pale, and even her lips had turned a shade of ashen. Her hands, gripping the outside seams of the metal skeleton for comfort, shook. And her eyes watered too, but her trembling lower lip suggested it was not from relief.

“Sure?”

“Why the hell do you care?”

That sounded like her. He started to relax again. “You don’t look like you should be upright.”

“Yeah, well, you weren’t coming to me.”

He shifted. The manacles clinked. “Sorry I couldn’t visit you in Medical.”

“I wouldn’t want you to.” Bitterness tinted her words. “I have a few questions.”

Logen concentrated on her. Drinking in the sight.

Once, he saw her taking off her belt, shimmying out of her suit, exposing yards of creamy skin to his gaze. Moonlight and firelight had cast blue and golden glows to her rounded breasts, her hourglass waist, and most importantly, her heart-shaped ass.

He had failed her. He swore to himself he would not do so again.

Genre:  Young Adult Dystopian/SciFi/Steampunk Romance

Synopsis
From two-time award-winning author, Kate L. Mary, comes the sequel to MOONCHILD, “a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of YA fantasy.” After surviving the auction and a near death experience at the hands of Asher’s father, Scarlett Moon is more than ready for life to settle down, and with each passing day she starts to feel more at home in Columbus. Even with Asher ready for more than Scarlett can give, she manages to fall into a routine that almost feels like a normal life.

But one distress call is all it takes to destroy the serenity the group has managed to build.

As far as anyone knew, Paget had moved on with her life after storming out months ago, but the fear in her voice when she calls the warehouse tells a different story. Even though Scarlett never liked Asher’s ex to begin with, she can’t help feeling a little bit responsible for Paget’s situation.

Searching in the seediest part of the city, the group picks up clues as they try to piece together what might have happened. The more Scarlett learns about what the other woman has been through over the last few months, the more concerned she becomes. Even worse: there’s no sign of Paget anywhere in Columbus.

With all the clues pointing in one direction, the group leaves the city and heads for Hocking Hills. Only it seems the danger may have followed them, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake and putting Paget in more danger than ever before. As Scarlett learns more about the woman who used to hold Asher’s heart, she suddenly finds herself unable to deny how she really feels about him. Only, with Paget in trouble, Scarlett can’t help wondering if Asher might still have feelings for his ex.

Excerpt #2
“Does that make you jealous?” Asher’s voice comes out husky, and there isn’t an ounce of teasing in it. He steps closer to me, and the heat radiating off his body warms the small space. The desire I’ve been trying to hold off builds inside me, making my pulse quicken. I hate that he makes me feel this way, but I love it too.

“No,” I say, but the word is weak and shaky, and it wouldn’t fool the most gullible person in the world.

Asher’s smile disappears, and I try to tell myself to stick to my guns. That it doesn’t matter how much I want Asher right now, I can’t give him what he wants. I’d just hurt him.

“Scarlett, why do you do this to me? You tell me no and you push me away, but I can see it in your eyes every time you look at me. How am I supposed to take those looks? How am I supposed to ignore your jealousy?” His words come out sounding painful.

Then he steps even closer, putting his hand on my shoulder and slowly running it down my arm. Leaving a trail of goose bumps behind. Only this time, they aren’t from the cold.

“I’m doing this to protect you,” I whisper. “I’m no good for you.”

“Why don’t you let me be the judge of that?” he says, smiling.

I should stop him. I know it. But suddenly, I don’t want to. All these months of fighting my feelings, ignoring how he ignites my body with the smallest look. How the desire builds inside me every day, getting more and more intense. It all seems stupid. Asher is so persistent, and my attraction isn’t going away. Maybe he’s right. Maybe we are right for each other.

Once again, he seems to know what I’m thinking, because a look of triumph flashes in his eyes as he takes that last little step toward me. He reaches up to tuck my hair behind my ear, and instead of dropping his hand he runs his thumb across my cheek and over to my lips. My insides nearly burst into flames from the contact. The light from the lamp flickers, causing little shadows to dance across his face. It makes him look sexier than he ever has before. Right here in this dirty cabin in the middle of nowhere with the wind howling outside. It’s too much to resist, especially after all this time building inside me.

This is it. The moment when I decide our future.

I have no idea what I’m going to do.

Excerpt #3
The door flung open, and we pushed our way inside. Mom stood at the sink. She dabbed at her face with a tissue and turned slowly toward us. Her puffy and red-rimmed eyes sent a coldness shuffling through me.

“What’s wrong, Mom? Did something happen?”

She nodded and pointed in the direction of Bob’s bed. “Over there.”

My gaze shot to the corner. My hot, fluttery stomach plummeted with an iron heaviness. Dad, hunching beside Bob, rubbed the dog’s head and stroked his chin and ears. Bob lay there lifeless, unmoving. Symphony curled up tight beside him, her head bundled in close to Bob’s. Her body stayed still, and cloudy eyes revealing her heartbreak.

I rushed over, dropping my purse to the floor. “No… please no.”

Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes while I slid to the floor, coming to rest by Bob’s bed. “He’s really sick, Sophia. Sometime throughout the day his stomach acted up again, and his hips gave out. He hasn’t touched a bite all day and can’t walk anymore.”

“Shouldn’t we call Doc Fitzner?” I scrambled up, racing to the phone. “I’ll call him.”

“I’ve already done that. Made an emergency call to him this afternoon. He saw Bob and gave him some medicine, but said there’s nothing we can do.”

I fought to swallow— why was it so stinking hard to swallow? As I clasped my hands under my chin, the hot tears engulfed my eyes, dripping down onto my face. I staggered back over to Dad and Bob. Dad got up and brought an unsure hand up to my face like he was going to wipe away my tears. But, being the awkward dad he was, his arm flopped to his side again and he simply said, “He’s old, Soph.”

“But Dad.” My tear-soaked voice croaked out. “We can’t give up on him.”

My wobbly legs gave out and I sank to the floor, curling up beside Bob. Symphony raised her head to look at me, but plopped it back down again, the fur at the corners of her eyes damp. I gathered him in my arms and buried my face into his fur. He let out a small whimper and licked the side of my face, trying to comfort me. Me, when it was him who was slipping away. In spite of all of Bob’s pain and suffering, the love he had for me was unwavering. It was amazing the way a dog never pulled judgement, was never self-serving, and loved you no matter what the circumstances. Bob loved beyond all reason, even on his darkest days. He was always there to cheer me up.

Dad cleared his throat, his voice hoarse and shaky. “I’m sorry.”

I sat back up on my heels. “What do we do? There’s gotta be something.” Hope swam in my eyes, searching his face for an answer.

Mom let out a small sob, still standing by the sink. Dad’s spine bowed and his shoulders drooped. His voice wheezed out in a flat monotone, “He’s gonna to have to be put down. He’ll never walk again.”

I jerked my head back. “What? You can’t be serious.” My voice quavered, the disbelief and sadness slamming me in the chest. “There has to be something we can do for him. I’m not just gonna throw him away. I can’t live without Bob.”

The tears started to roll again. I couldn’t stop them, my breath coming out in hitching, violent sobs. Mom came to sit by me, collecting me tight in her arms. Aaron leaned against the sink, his arms wrapped underneath his chest.

Mom wiped the tears from my face and tucked a strand of hair behind my ears. “It’s okay. Bob is suffering now, sweetie. He’ll be in a better place.”

A better place. The words resounded in my head like a reverberating thunderclap. Bob would be going to where Matt and Mandy had gone. I’m sure dogs didn’t have unfinished business, so he wouldn’t become a ghost. If what Mandy had told me was true, Bob was going to love where he was going. He would be at peace, and he would be alive in all things. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad for him. It was us that would lose, not Bob. The sadness would be unbearable. It would hurt like a stake in the heart to see him go, but if I could at least know that he would always be around me, like Tate, maybe the dagger wouldn’t hurt so much.

 —————————————————————————-

My Review
Part paranormal, part thriller, part scifi, this book is really unique. Seventeen-year-old Anna has an unusual ability to channel the dead by touching something they have also touched. It’s like The Sixth Sense, except the dead know they’re dead, they just have something left undone before they can let go of their old lives. When Anna picks up Molly, a trafficked teen who was brutally murdered, she contacts Molly’s grandfather, a former detective, for help. To say Anna has an uphill battle convincing him that Molly is residing in Anna’s head would be an understatement. Together with friends of Molly’s, Anna and her best friend, Deo, try to help Molly get the closure she needs, only to realize they’ve stumbled into something huge that might have roots all the way at the highest levels of the government.

Plot
The story is well-plotted, but takes longer to get going than I would have liked. It’s definitely an intriguing story, but there’s a lot of world building involved that is necessary to understand Anna’s situation and the world she lives in, but at times, it slows the story down. There is also far less romance than I like in my young adult novels. Which means this is perfect for anyone who thinks young adult has too much romance 🙂

Characters
Anna is a fascinating character. I had a difficult time warming up to her, though. While I understand why she’s so distrustful and standoffish, it made it difficult to identify with her. Still, she’s intriguing with one of the best backstories I’ve read in awhile. I loved the rest of the characters as well, all are so well-developed they jump off the page. Everyone from Deo to Aaron, Sam, and even Daniel are living, breathing characters that drive the story as much as Anna.

What Didn’t Work for Me
1. The pacing.
It was slow at times, almost too slow.

2. The ending. I realize it’s the first book of a trilogy, but it was still too much of a cliffhanger for me.

3. The cover. It doesn’t really do anything for me. It didn’t grab my eye at all, but the author’s name sure did, and the description sold it.

What I Enjoyed About The Delphi Effect
1. The world building.
 True perfection!

the-row-gif-32. Deo. He’s anything but stereotypical as the gender-questioning best friend.

3. The plot. Unique. And that’s about all I can say without giving anything away 🙂

4. Aaron. He’s amazing as the guy, with a secret of his own, who swoops in to help Anna and Deo.

5. Conspiracies. I adore a good conspiracy, particularly one with ties to the U.S. government. This was my favorite aspect of the story!

Bottom Line
The Delphi Effect is a fascinating paranormal/scifi/mystery/thriller for young adults.

Excerpt #2
Joshua groaned and pushed up to rest on his elbows. “What happened? Where am I?” His wiry chest was bare. The scar on his abdomen was still crusted over, but the skin around the wound bragged a healthy peach hue. “Where are Gryphon and Gabe?” He looked at Eva then over to Zo. “What is Eva doing here?”

Zo and Tess didn’t bother answering any of his questions before wrapping him into a hug. Tess openly wept, and Zo found herself jealous for the chance to express her relief without falling apart.

She pressed her forehead into Joshua’s and held it there as she looked into his eyes. “I see you, Joshua.”

“Umm.” Joshua grinned. “I see you too. Quite well, actually.”

Tess rolled around in a fit of giggles.

“What am I missing?” said Joshua.

Zo pulled away and tapped the end of the boy’s nose with the tip of her finger. “Sorry. It’s an old Wolf custom. Eyes are the windows to the soul. I was greeting your inner light. Acknowledging your spirit.” Zo shook her head and smiled. “It has been so long since I’ve been able to be a Wolf. I couldn’t help myself.”

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Synopsis
Since their Arrival less than 30 years ago, immortal Vie rule the planet like the super-predators they are. Enslaved humans are their servants…their entertainment…and their food. Anemies—humans with various types of anemia—are simply exterminated. Their nutritionally deficient blood is useless to the Vie.

Or so it’s thought…

_________

Alex, an Elite Vie, is a bit of a Renaissance Alien. Part scientist, part Raid Specialist, part drug addict, he knows Anemie blood is valuable. Rather than blindly carrying out his boss’s kill order, he convinces some colleagues to spare a few Anemies, not only for study, but also to reserve a secret stock.

The more Anemie blood Alex drinks, the more he slips into delusion, and the more his double life threatens to crumble. But quitting Anemie blood is not an option. Every Anemie has their own personal flavor. Each gives a unique high.

When Alex takes a hit of Justin’s blood, his hallucinations bleed into reality…

_________

Anemie Justin knows his little sister, Sammie, and he are living past their expiration dates. It becomes a guarantee when they’re bitten by a Vie named Alex during a raid. (The bite is fatal, thanks to a toxin carried in Vie saliva.) Alex adds insult to injury by promising Justin a second chance—an antidote in exchange for agreeing to be a lab rat.

And a mule…of his own blood.

When Justin says no, Alex takes off with Sammie.

All Justin has to do is find them, beat Alex, and cure himself and Sammie. All he has is a stake and serious lack of self-preservation.

No problem.

_________

Alex wants Justin’s blood.

Justin wants his sister back.

GAME ON..

Trailer

Excerpt #1
I hated afternoons the most. Soon after came darkness—the time when a raiding squad could snatch you out of bed and drain all the blood from your body. It was amazing that any Anemies survived with the extermination campaign ridding the world of us red blood cell-deficient freaks.

I gently squeezed my sister’s hand to make sure she kept up. Dirt caked under her fingernails like it caked under mine. The cuff of her torn sleeve had stains like mine. Her pant cuffs were rolled up six times… also like mine. A younger version of me—mouthiness and all—in girl form. Unlike me, Sammie tended to dawdle, and since we held onto the last rung of the society ladder by the tips of our fingers, giving in to distraction could get us hurt—or killed.

My gaze jumped to the pale, indifferent sky then jittered to the partially constructed biodome edge as I walked. Large, clear panels filled the metal framework in a beehive of hexagons. Eventually, the damn thing would cover the entire city, including the river surrounding the island and part of the ocean capping the south side. The project had been progressing since before I was born.

Once the construction workers completed the biodome, Vie wouldn’t have to fear the destructive UV rays of our sun and could wander freely during the day. We’d have no safe period whatsoever. Vie could get us any time.

Synopsis
Fourteen year-old Bernard is full of out of the box ideas—ideas that nobody appreciates. Not his ultra-rational father, not his classmates, and definitely not his teacher, who’s fed up waiting for Bernard’s overdue science project. You’d think with a hotshot quantum physicist for a dad, the assignment would be easy as “pi”, but with his relationship with his father on rocky ground, Bernard is under more pressure than a helium atom.

And Bernard’s impulse control flies out the window when he’s stressed. So instead of turning in his project, he moons the class and gets suspended. Now his dad’s got no choice but to bring him to his work. At the Atom Smasher. It’s the chance of a lifetime for Bernard, who knows smashing atoms at the speed of light can—theoretically—make wormholes. How about that for the most mind-bending science project ever? But when he sneaks into the particle accelerator and someone hits the power button, Bernard ends up in the last place he’d ever want to be.

Inside his father’s brain.

And it’s nothing like the spongy grey mass Bernard studied at school. It’s a galaxy, infinite and alive. Like, people live there. A mysterious civilization on the brink of extinction, as unaware of their host as he is of them. But there’s zero time to process this. Bernard’s about to be caught up in an epic war between the two sides of his dad’s brain over their most precious resource:

Mental Energy.

With his father’s life at stake, Bernard must go up against the tyrannical left side of his father’s brain to save the dying, creative right side. But how the heck is he supposed to do that when he’s just a hopelessly right-brained kid himself?

“In the novel Brainwalker, Mundell and Lacast have devised an ingenious plot using the tesseract concept found in ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ with the setting being the brain of the protagonist’s father.” — Douglas B. Educator

“This story is full of high-stakes adventure, and it often excels in its imaginative and allegorical exploration of real-world issues” — Kirkus Reviews

“The descriptions of the various locations, creatures, and residents of the Brainiverse are both fun and intelligent. Bernard is an engaging protagonist.” — Kirkus Reviews

“An imaginative adventure, … one that clearly benefits from the great amount of thought that its authors put into it.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A fun way for kids/preteens to learn about science and the brain. The pictures are also really great and add a lot to the story” — Olivia Farr, Reviewer at Harvard Medical School

“The characters and the setting of this book are truly unique and very diverse, the plot is filled with fiction mixed with real brain concepts and puts everything into perspective from both fiction and reality” — Gabrielle Messier

“Definitely an approach to teenage urban fantasy that I’ve never seen before. I found myself quite enamored with Bernard and all his geeky questions and theories … Underneath all the neurology, it’s really a story about connection and love and fighting for what’s important.” — Kristen Canady

“‘Brainwalker’ is a great scientific fiction and that offers the readers a fantastic experience of the scientific adventure with the beautifully written words, the well laid out plots, and lifelike characters in the story.” — Yichen Tu

“Not unlike experiencing Avatar in a 3D IMAX theater, this exciting and provocative novel includes characters and images of such dimension, the reader cannot help but feel fully invited into this fantastical storyline.” — Lolly Howe

“Story starts and ends with the MOON! All will have to take a read to find out what I am talking about. This is a great Teen read revolving around young minds faced with the challenges of life.” — Linda Babbs

“The world-building was pretty sublime: it was so cool to contextualize the brain in this way, and learn about it at the same time… The illustrations were all so refreshing to see – it’s been too long since I’ve read a book that isn’t afraid to support the plot line with pictures! I’m looking forward to what Mundell and Lacast have to offer in the future!” — TT turner

5 stars – “The authors have found a creative way to introduce the functions of the brain in a creative way that’s full of action, adventure, and suspense. This will be a popular book in middle grades and middle school boys will enjoy this one!” — Susan Grigsby, ALA Librarian

Young Adult Book Review – Moonchild by Kate L. Mary

Moonchild by Kate L. Mary

4.5 Stars

Synopsis
In a world fueled by greed and corruption, where airships rule the skies and coal mines have been turned into prisons, Scarlett Moon has one goal: Survive. Being tough and looking out for herself is the only way to stay alive, but when her best friend, Rory, is arrested and returned to the mines, all of Scarlett’s carefully built walls threaten to crumble.

After being rescued by an airship full of pirates, led by the sexy and irresistible Asher Kimura, Scarlett finds herself surrounded by cons and fugitives, and thrust into the middle of a coal-smuggling business. When they take her to Columbus, the one place she never wanted to set foot in again, she wants nothing more than to get away. And her discomfort only grows as she becomes increasingly drawn to Asher.

But everything changes when she discovers there may be a way to rescue Rory. Enlisting the pirates’ help, Scarlett sets out on a mission to save her friend, praying that her overwhelming attraction to Asher doesn’t mean the end to her freedom—in more ways than one.

—————————————————————————-

My Review
One of my favorite books of 2016. This is one of those that will stick with me weeks or months after I’m done. It took me about a third of the book to warm up to Scarlett, but once I did, I loved her immensely. I was worried at first that in order to create a strong female character, the author felt she needed to make her heroine more like a male character. Scarlett is always wanting to hit someone or something. She’s aggressive, uses sex as a diversion, and has a hard time expressing any emotion other than anger. But as we learn more about her backstory, her personality begins to make sense. I still think strong female characters don’t need to be written as guys with skirts, but in this case it works.

Moonchild GIF 1

When Scarlett’s best friend, Rory, is taken to the mines, Scarlett gives up any hope of ever seeing her again. She and her friends barely escape capture themselves, only being rescued at the last moment by a group of ragtag pirates, including extremely hot Asher. When Asher explains  what happens to pretty, innocent girls in the mines — they’re auctioned off as sex slaves to the highest bidder — Scarlett enlists the help of her friends to rescue Rory. This is the main plot and it unfolds at a rapid pace as they seek information on Rory’s whereabouts and come up with a rescue plan. Underlying it all is a simmering sexual tension between Scarlett and Asher. The back and forth is worthy of an eye roll or two, but the rest of the story more than makes up for it.

Moonchild GIF 2

Plot
The plot is fantastic. Set on rescuing her best friend, Scarlett embarks on a dangerous mission, risking everything for the only person she considers family. The pacing is perfect, unfolding at a clipped rate, without overpowering us with action. There’s enough romance to keep the story from being just an action/adventure and more than adequate character development to make this a well-balanced novel.

Characters
Scarlett is fascinating. As I mentioned above, it took me awhile to warm up to her, but once I did, I was committed. She’s deeply wounded and yet realizes others have had it far worse than she has. That self-awareness is what keeps her from becoming too jaded or wallowing in a pit of self pity that would doom her character in my mind. Asher is the hot, witty pirate with the disarming smile and a past of his own that shapes everything he does. The rest of the characters have their own stories in this dystopian world that Kate L. Mary has created.

moonchild-gif-7

World Building
This is where the story really shines in my eyes. The attention to detail in the author’s vision of a future where technology is taboo and coal-fired steam power is where it’s at. This steampunk world is dark, yet vividly rich, full of airships and pirates and victorian-era costumes that come alive as much as any of the characters that inhabit it.

moonchild-gif-8

What Didn’t Work for Me
1. The editing.
The book could have benefitted from tighter editing. There were more than a few missing/extra words than were easily overlooked. There was also some repetition that was distracting that should have been picked up by a good editor.

2. The cover. There’s nothing really wrong with it except there is nothing really right about it. This is a totally kick-ass steampunk dystopian sci-fi adventure and the cover, along with the title, made me think it was going to be a paranormal romance. I wouldn’t have bothered picking up this book if I’d only seen the cover. Luckily I read the blurb first!

3. The ending. This is the only reason I’m giving the book 4.5 stars instead of 5. I can overlook a crappy cover, because that can be fixed. So can lackluster editing, but the ending is the last thing I have, the thing that sticks with me long after I turn off my Kindle. It feels unfinished, as if this is the first in a series, but there’s no indication it’s only book 1 of anything. I do hope the author decides to write more about these characters and this world. She’s done an incredible job creating everything and there is so much potential for more of Scarlett’s story.

What I Enjoyed About Moonchild
1. The setting.
The author has created this fabulous, futuristic, steampunk world that is vivid and imaginative. Her attention to detail is phenomenal, and yet the world building is subtly worked into the plot.

moonchild-gif-3

2. Scarlett. She’s tough as nails with a heart of gold. Although it took a little bit for me to warm to her, she is everything I want my young adult heroine to be.

moonchild-gif-4

3. The plot. It’s near perfect in it’s development and execution. Only information necessary to move the story forward is provided and is done so in the proper sequence.

4. Asher. The complex pirate with the winning smile won me over at first sight. I’m a sucker for pirates with a heart, think Hook from Once Upon a Time. Asher is all that and a bag of chips!

moonchild-gif-5

5. Loyalty. This is the enduring theme of the story, whether it’s Scarlett’s loyalty to Rory, Dex’s loyalty to Scarlett and Rory, or Asher’s loyalty to everyone he cares about, this works so well in an otherwise dark tale.

Bottom Line
Moonchild is a wonderfully plotted action adventure with deeply developed characters. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Synopsis
Young genius Morag Chen doesn’t believe in the supernatural. Or not until a thousand gods show up in front of her, appearing from a clear-blue sky. The Architects are terrifying, they’re hypnotically attractive, and they’re real—but whatare they, and what do they want, and why have they stolen the mind of Daniel Calder, the person she is closest to?

Ancient gods? Invading aliens? Everyone has a theory, but no one has guessed the truth. In this dark, suspenseful, mind-bending sequel to The Fire Seekers, Morag picks up the narration from Daniel as she works to accept that there’s more than one way to think about the nature of humanity. And she will find that the only way forward is through secrets that Daniel himself seems desperate but unable to convey.

A mysterious lab. The house of a dying billionaire. The hidden home of a strange and forgotten people. In each of these places, Morag and Daniel will come a step closer to answers, hope, and a way of fighting back.

Excerpt
You were standing motionless on the snow, like all the others, with your face tilted up toward the sky and your hands raised in greeting.

“There!” I shouted.

Mack didn’t hear me, which wasn’t surprising—I was competing with 130 decibels. I leaned across the instrument panel, pointed, and shouted again. “There! Daniel and Rosko. Do you see?”

Wrestling with the controls, struggling to make the big machine do his bidding, he glanced to his left and nodded. Even in that moment of life-threatening crisis there was an aura of relaxed control about him.

“Go,” he mouthed, even before the helicopter’s wheels had made contact with the pad. “Help them. You’ll have to be quick.”

Snow and ice, stained pink by the evening light, were cascading onto the pad. Smoke and steam were so totally everywhere that you couldn’t tell which was which. As if by magic, Rosko had emerged from the crevasse, covered in blood, and was struggling up the slope toward you from fifty paces away. The Seraphim were standing silently, or chanting, or on the steeper sections they were beginning to stumble and fall as the ground shook. It was still a couple of hours to sunset, but the full moon had risen into view over the shoulder of the mountain, indecently big and close, like an airbrushed fantasy planet from the cover of an old comic book. Not far to our right, Mount Ararat’s first lava flow in centuries was hissing and sliding—a lazy, venomous, red- eyed snake, mooching for new victims.

And—
And—
It was hard not to stand there in the doorway and just stare. The sky, which should have been blue, was turning before our eyes into an upside-down oil-black lake. And a thousand gods—spirits, disembodied souls, angels, demons, Architects, what the hell did I know?—were swirling and foaming and materializing out of it, taking on human and yet not-human shapes as they dripped down toward the shiny, bright faces of the entranced, eager-for-immortality Believers. That counts as a Don’t-Miss, Five Stars, Bucket-List roadside attraction, don’t you think? But it grabs your attention even more, when it contradicts everything you’ve ever believed, because your whole life you’ve been a science- minded, unapologetically rationalist, don’t-give-me-that-crap atheist.

This is not happening. That’s what I said to myself. Morag, this is so so so not bloody happening. It’s just an illusion. A hallucination. An extra- deluxe, high-octane, ultra-high-pixel-density nightmare.

I hate it, D; I totally hate it when I don’t believe a single word I’m telling myself.

Except she can’t quite commit to a life of dull luxury and she suspects she may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithy in the family’s steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love—only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure, and restitution await her if she can survive the voyage.

Based on the true story of The Daughters of the King, Louis the XIV’s social program to settle the wilds of Canada with women of noble birth, Marguerite’s steampunk adventure follows in the footsteps of nearly one thousand brave women and girls who were rewarded handsomely for trekking across the pirate infested Atlantic to a strange land.

“The writing is solid and the world-building – that clever combination of historical detail and Ms. Statham’s imagination – is excellent.”~ The Australia Times Books .

Excerpt
Faith appeared with four glowing green drinks in a cup holder tray. Clear plastic cups, lids, and straws let the liquid inside glow through. It looked like something that would spawn ninja turtles. “These are the Incinerator’s own toxic spills. They’re just vodka and sprite with a capful of that crap they put in glow sticks. Did you know you can drink that shit?”

Jonah reluctantly took a plastic cup. “Are you sure we should drink it?”

“It’s not going to kill us. No more so than the alcohol.” Ilya picked up a cup and took a long generous pull on his straw.

I took an experimental sip. It tasted like vodka and sprite. There was a mildly synthetic aftertaste, but nothing toxic. I took another, much larger sip. There it was – the warmth I’d been craving since my shower. I might stand a chance of sleeping tonight after all.

Jonah followed my lead and took a slurp on his straw, pausing to let the liquid do its work. He looked at me with a devilish grin and grabbed my hand, pulling me off to the dance floor. His touch radiated energy into me, right through my skin waking up every cell in my body.

He leaned down and kissed me, running his hands through my hair. His powerful grip felt restrained, as though his mind fought to control his body. The intensity surpassed our first night together. After we had spent so long mocked by his unstable mutation, first hurting me and then nearly killing him, we were both finally stronger than ever.

“I can’t help myself. I need to touch you. I don’t ever want to let you go. We’re going to make up for some lost time tonight.” His lips brushed my ear as he spoke. His fingers traced the line of my neck and it sent shivers down my spine. So much for sleep!

Synopsis
Earth is ruined. Humankind destroyed. And it’s old news.

Romy’s life is simple—for a genetically enhanced space soldier; pick up space junk with her four friends, and stave off the invaders fixated on stealing Planet Earth.

It isn’t much. But it’s temporary—only another 850 years to go, give or take.

When her crew tangles with a gulp-worthy alien mothership, Romy’s return to Earth is brought forwards at hurtling pace.

Strength comes from the unlikeliest of quarters.

As does leadership.

…As does betrayal.

——————————————————————

Excerpt #2
Had they really just been celebrating mere minutes ago? Romy heard the cries of her knot as they were battered relentlessly.

She was going to die. Her knot was going to die.

Metal screeched and the heat was intense as their craft continued to burn. She could feel the heat even through the padding of her suit. Romy pushed back, gripping her harness tightly as she turned her head away from the scorching fire outside.

The keening of buckling alloy was unbearable, overriding all except the peeling heat. Romy was going to melt alive. Eyes streaming, she squinted through the tiniest of gaps in the flames.

Earth.

Her breath caught as she saw it, truly saw it for the first time. How beautiful their world was. The swirl of blues and greens.

All of this could have been theirs, in time.

The battler let out a splintered scream and all the air was crushed from her as she was hurled to one side. A network of cracks splintered the visor of her helmet with the immense pressure. Her head throbbed, a sharpness stinging at her right temple.

Black edged her vision. Where were the others?

Romy was at the mercy of the descent with no idea of up or down. Her world was blistering pain; her orientation shredded, her calm obliterated. Tears streamed from her eyes until what remained of her sight was blurred beyond use.

Soon it would be over.

Synopsis
In a society where rebels are unwanted, the Outcasts have their own underground world beneath the streets of New York City.

What type of society applies the word Defective to healthy young humans?

IT IS ALMOST A PERFECT WORLD. One government rules earth—the Commonwealth and one people—the Commoners. The pure society of the Commonwealth has but one contamination, the 1%, the Outcasts—rebellious kids and young adults who for some puzzling reason cannot or will not conform.

When Dante’s girlfriend vanishes like thousands of other Outcasts before her, he enlists the aid of friends to find her. They discover the shocking secret of what extreme the Commonwealth of Earth will go to ensure that Outcasts reform and obey the rules!

Excerpt
The lights are out in the Brooklyn Underground since the birthday party is supposed to be a surprise for my girlfriend, Kiara. The only thing visible are 324 glow-in-the-dark red No circles on our clothing marking all of us as Outcasts like the way the Nazis marked the Jews with a yellow Star of David before gassing them 131 years ago. Only our Outcast symbols are more in-your face, bold red circles with a red diagonal down the center. The Commonwealth is sending Outcasts a blatant message by forcing us to wear the symbol as if marking us as illegal, broken, untouchable, and unwanted.

The Commonwealth longs to be known as The Republic of Free Will. Their rules allow us to wear what we want but if our clothing is not the required silver jumpsuit for our age group, and then we must wear the Outcast No symbol. There is no cheating the system either. Like dogs, the Commonwealth has shot every Outcast through our necks with scanning ids.

Our scanning ids propagate throughout our bloodstreams so there is no beating the scanners. In fact, Scanner Droids are equipped with image processing and a camera eye. Scanners roam the Commonwealth. Scanners are magnetic and if a Scanner catches an Outcast being out of compliance, the Scanner will latch onto him or her and hold the Outcast in place against the closest magnetic field until the FRE (Fanatic Rule Enforcers) arrive. Scanners are like giant refrigerator magnets. It really pisses me off to see Outcasts dangling from walls of buildings, which are all equipped with magnetic holding places.

Outcasts are in the minority, our numbers fading fast into the endangered species category along with animals, which the Commonwealth has replaced with robotic countertypes. A mechanical dog cannot shit in your yard, right.

We Outcasts only feel safe in our undergrounds. Below the streets of New York City exists a subterranean city consisting of secret crypts, forgotten or abandoned subway stations and tracks, and tunnels known only to Outcasts. The NYC Underground has been here for centuries, and the Commonwealth has pretty much forgotten the underground ever existed. The Commonwealth does not care to look back at past mistakes, which is what the underground is. Besides, the Perfections are germ freaks. They would never dirty themselves by climbing down into our grimy world. We are beneath them. See, I made a pun. Get it. Underground. Beneath them. And the Commonwealth thinks Outcasts are dumb.

Everyone on earth is called a Commoner, which is a joke to Outcasts. There are Perfections and there are Outcasts, period.

Crap! It has been an hour and Kiara still is not here. I glare at everyone acting fidgety. Quit whispering about starting the party without her. Dammit! Kiara is coming.

I scroll through my text messages.

Where are you, Kiara?

I am waiting for you Kiara, you know where.

Don’t you dare stand me up for your birthday!

Are the parents giving you problems?

Hurry up!

Why don’t you answer?

I am beginning to get worried. Quit joking around.

Are you sick?

Have you had an accident?

Kiara, please let me know that you are okay.

Kiara, this is Dante. This message I followed with a secret code to let her know that the texts are not a trick.

Finally, I send one more message and my finger is shaking, my breath is raspy, my eyes are stinging. Kiara, have they taken you? Have the FRE

Quick, I hit the delete button. Worry about Kiara made me almost forget about the airwaves. We may be invisible in the Underground but the Commonwealth is always listening. My text mentioned the FRE and had I completed and sent that text, the Commonwealth might discover that we suspect the FRE of involvement in the disappearance of Outcasts. The Perfections think Outcasts are stupid because of the way we dress and act but Bones Outcasts hang out in the Brooklyn Underground. We would notice if one of us went missing. Last year, Luca vanished and a few days ago, Adrian disappeared.

The clock ticks and Kiara still does not show up for her 18th birthday party. Everyone is thinking of Sebastian. The President’s son vanished two years ago, and no one has seen him since. We are a class-based society and even though we Bones Outcasts do not like the Powerfuls (Manhattan Outcasts), we were all concerned about Sebastian and believed his father was holding him prisoner because Sebastian wanted to solve the global mystery of why and how Outcasts disappear without a trace. Thus, I broke into the President’s penthouse in Manhattan from an outside window. I am talking 90 stories up a slick building using suction cups. They call me the Spider and the Bones bet the Powerfuls that I could do it. It turned out the President for Life is not that big a dickhead. Well, maybe he is since Sebastian is probably…no, do not even think it! Sebastian is simply missing. He must be alive else Kiara…

If Sebastian being the only child of the President of the West Commonwealth, the richest man on Earth, could not be saved then Kiara… Oh, God, where is the air? I cannot breathe. That night climbing the 90 stories, I never felt so weak before until now; only this time helplessness surrounds me. As we wait for Kiara there is only silence in the Brooklyn Underground, our underground of the Bones Outcasts, except for a few sniffling girls scared of disappearing next, and me. My stomach rumbles and a panic attack is coming on. Kiara is the best thing that ever happened to me in my sorry life on this crappy planet that frowns on Outcasts because we dare to be who we are with no excuses.

Ivory is obsessed with saving Outcasts from vanishing from the Commonwealth of Earth. She has smuggled an Outcast out of Dead Horse Bay, but can she smuggle herself in to learn more about the secrets the Commonwealth is hiding?

Or perhaps the answers she and her friends seek are in Lockup, the dreaded insane asylum Outcasts are dragged to when they have accumulated 50 demerits.
