Easton Wylder is baseball royalty. The game is his life. His passion. His everything.

So, when an injury threatens to end Easton’s season early, the team calls in renowned physical therapist, Doc Dalton, to oversee his recovery. She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.

Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.

And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to maintain the club’s best interest, in regards to whether he’s ready to play.

But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?

My Review
This is the second book in the Worth series by Samantha Gudger. I adored the character and story in the first book, so my expectations were high with this one, but it doesn’t disappoint. There’s so much character development, it’s easy to get sucked into Emma’s world again. We pick back up with Emma, Riley, and the gang as well as a new character, Tyler. He’s a troublemaker living with Riley’s family, his parents hoping their influence will straighten him out. He’s the cause of more than a little conflict between Emma and Riley, but the conflict doesn’t end there. Once again, Emma’s dysfunctional family plays a starring role. We finally learn what happened to her mother and why her father and brothers ignore her. Gudger brings heartfelt emotion to her characters, making us care about them as if we know them.

Plot
The main plot centers around Emma’s familial relationships. They’re fractured, battered, broken shards, so putting the pieces back together is going to take a lot of work. The author never lets the characters take the easy way out. This is a gut-wrenching journey for all of them, and some of the best scenes involve painfully honest moments between Emma and members of her family. Subplots include Emma’s relationship with Riley and her future beyond high school. Both of those subplots strongly support the main plot.

Characters
The author puts her characters through the wringer and the come out the other side forever altered. Not only Emma this time, though, but also Riley, Emma’s dad and brothers, and even newcomer, Tyler. Gudger has a way of finding the grit in every character and bringing it to the surface in a way that makes her characters come alive in full color.

What I Loved About A SHOT WORTH TAKING
1. Riley.
I didn’t agree with everything he did, but he always puts Emma first.

2. Emma. Her loyalty knows no bounds. She has a bigger heart than I ever gave her credit for and I love her journey in this second installment.

3. Tyler. He wasn’t my favorite character all the time, but he is complex and real and his heart is in the right place.

4. Family Drama. There is boatloads of it here and it’s well done. We finally get some answers about Emma’s mom and the events that tore Emma’s family apart.

5. Basketball. This is a little bit less of a focus this time around, but I still enjoyed how it threads through the story, binding all the fragments together.

Bottom Line
A worthy follow up to one of my favorite young adult sports romances.

Excerpt #2
Cash stared at his feet. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. And then he muttered, “Screw it” under his breath.

He strode across the kitchen and captured her face between his hands. His mouth crushed down on hers. This was no slow approach. Cash devoured her. He nipped at her bottom lip, and on reflex, she opened her mouth, allowing his tongue to dart inside. The kiss happened so quickly she struggled to process it. When her brain caught up, a thrill of ecstasy rushed through her. This wasn’t a dream, nor was it some fifteen-year-old girl full of hormones, pressing her lips against the centrefold of a teen magazine, hoping it would spring to life and kiss her back.

With desire surging through her body, her knees buckled, and she sank a couple of inches before a strong arm wrapped around her waist, supporting her. Just as she was about to run out of air, Cash tore his mouth away, and his lips feathered across her cheek, her ear, her neck as she gasped for breath.

“What’s happening to me?” he muttered, his teeth nipping at her earlobe.

Her stomach convulsed with need. “Cash, I—”

He cut her off as his mouth consumed hers once again. She entwined her fingers in his hair because if she didn’t anchor them, they could end up anywhere. Cash didn’t merely kiss. He possessed. His hands burrowed beneath her shirt, and with a flick of his fingers, he unhooked her bra. But when his palm moulded to her breast, a wave of panic hit her. This was moving too fast. Way too fast.

Tearing her mouth from his, she gulped in as much air as she could handle. Her lungs burned, and she turned her head to the side as he made another move to kiss her. His thumbs brushed her nipples, his lips fastening onto her neck, and as a rush of wetness pooled between her legs, Tally knew she had approximately five seconds to call a halt to this. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to resist him.

“Please stop,” she whispered.

He paused. His lips were still touching her neck, although they’d stopped moving, and his breath was hot against her skin. He raised his head and cupped her face, his thumbs skimming across her burning cheeks. “I don’t want to stop.”

God, she didn’t want him to either. And he had to know it. Her heaving chest, short breaths, and damp skin would tell him that she was turned on, more turned on than she’d been in her whole life. Fighting the devil on her shoulder and the desire in her heart was exhausting.

When her lips parted, Cash lowered his head to capture her mouth once more, but if she let him touch her again, she was done for. Another notch on a bedpost that already had a serious case of hives.

“No!” She pushed the flat of her hand against his hard chest. He immediately stepped back. His eyes narrowed, and the soft, full lips that had been fixed to hers moments before were now pressed into a thin white slash.

He strode out of the kitchen, leaving her alone. Mortified, she refastened her bra and tucked in her shirt. When she’d recovered enough to follow him into the hallway, he was standing by a wide-open front door.

“Isaac will take you back to work.”

“What––”

“Just go, Natalia. And be thankful I’m not going to put in a formal complaint about how you got that story.”

Her throat tightened, and choking back a sob, she ran outside.

About the Author
Tracie Delaney is the author of the Winning Ace trilogy. She loves nothing more than immersing herself in a good romance, although she sometimes, rather cheekily, makes her characters wait for their HEA.

When she isn’t writing or sitting around with her head stuck in a book, she can often be found watching The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones or any tennis match involving Roger Federer. Her greatest fear is running out of coffee.

Tracie studied accountancy, gaining her qualification in 2001. Her maths teacher would no doubt be stunned by this revelation considering Tracie could barely add two plus two at high school.

Tracie lives in the North West of England with her amazingly supportive husband. They both share a love of dogs, travel and wine.

Excerpt
“Now comes the part of the night where I warn you I’m going to touch you.”

She swallowed hard.  “Uh, okay. Just where are you going to touch me?”

He leaned close and whispered. “This is the part where you’ll just have to trust me.”

She couldn’t help but hold her breath. “You’re telling me you know how to dance?” she inquired.

“Well…my mother was a dancer before she married my father,” he told her. “All of us at least have a sense of rhythm. It can come in handy where coordination and learning intricate plays is concerned.”

He was right about having a sense of rhythm. Considering his height, he moved well to the music. He might not have had very fancy moves, but he was able to sway and keep time well for someone with such a tall frame. She might have expected him to look like some sort of disjointed marionette, but he was smooth as he pulled her in against his chest, curling around her so that his head hovered above hers and she could feel his warm breath near her ear.

She was hyperaware of his hands, his breath, his scent. She wanted him to touch her. Wanted his hands on her. Because you are a glutton for punishment. She turned in his arms, her ass gently brushing his thighs, his arm reaching around her and pressing her backwards so his chest would brush against her back, his arm inadvertently rubbing against her breasts.

The music switched from quick, pounding beats to something a little slower, but still so deep that it throbbed in her blood as she swayed and reached up behind her to get a hold of Gage, her hand sliding along his shoulder until she found his neck, gently tugging him to her.

He trailed his fingers up her side until he reached her elbow, then he curled his hand so his palm skimmed the flesh of her arms, leaving goose bumps behind.

Gage leaned down. “Becks?”

“Hmm?”

“I think we have an audience. Daniel’s got his eyes trained on you like a hawk right now. And we probably need to establish that we’re for sure a thing.”

Oh boy, he was talking about the kiss. Not the teasing ones he’d been giving her all night, the ones they’d been putting on for show. But the big one. “Uh, okay.”

Gage took her hand and led her through the crowd to the quieter hallway near the bathroom. At the end of the hallway, there was an alcove with a huge bay window that looked over the canyons of the backyard.  It was the perfect spot. Just enough traffic so that everyone would report that they’d been all over each other, and private enough that it wasn’t just an outright show.

Gage studied her, paying close attention to her lips. “Hey, Becks,”

“Yeah?” she whispered.

“I’m going to kiss you now.”

Becker acted before her brain could think her out of doing the one thing she’d been dying to do. Tipping her head up, ever so slightly.

His chest rumbled with a low growl. For a second, he held her tighter, bringing her closer against his lean, hard frame.

A shiver stole up her back. “Uh, maybe we could go slow. I don’t think—”

“We’ll go as slow as you like.”

He was going to kiss her. Even as she braced herself, Becker knew she was in trouble. She’d been able to keep him at arm’s length for so long.

He dipped his head, and his lips hovered over hers for a moment. “Relax, this is supposed to be fun.” The first brush of his lips over hers was soft.

As soon as Becker relaxed into him, he wrapped his hand around her in an embrace so tight it could keep the world at bay. He shifted the angle of his head and deepened the kiss. She couldn’t help but respond to his insistent tongue as it probed and slid over hers. Teasing, tasting, testing to see if he could intensify the heat. The moment his hands went to her hips and pulled them against his, Becker was lost.

The heat that pooled in the center of her chest spread throughout her body, scorching the fine hairs on her skin from the inside out. His hands stayed at her waist, but his thumbs drew slow circles on her hip bones that promised hotter things to come.

For once, Becker didn’t overthink. For once, she didn’t overanalyze. For once, she didn’t let fear rule and she just felt. Hot. Tight. Itchy. Gage was her balm. She needed more. She wanted more. Becker moaned, and the sound bounced off the walls.

Gage kissed like an expert, demanding that she respond to him. This guy could give kissing lessons. And she’d be the first one in line. Every. Single. Time. Her nipples hardened to points with every movement of his chest against hers. He backed her against the wall of the deserted hallway and pressed his body into hers.

The cautious part of her brain tried to send up a flare. Tried to send out a warning. Tried to send out fear signals, but every instinct told her to feel, to enjoy, that she had nothing to fear here. All she had to do was feel.

About Nana Malone
USA Today bestseller, Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Confession #4: I kissed a hockey player and I liked it.

Confession #5: If I’m not careful, I might relapse and fall for Ryder, and then I’ll be totally pucked.

My Review
I loved the idea of this book — a girl who used to chase hockey players who realizes she doesn’t like who she’s become, is pursued by a hockey player. But the execution didn’t live up to my expectations. I found Lindsay to be extremely annoying, but I did like Ryder. Lindsay went back and forth between knowing who she is and being unapologetic about it, to being ridiculously unable to control her own hormones around Ryder while keeping him at a distance. I’m frankly shocked he put up with that. Especially because the only thing he seems to like about her initially is her appearance. He talks about how hot she is all the time. It’s almost as if he only wanted the challenge of the chase, except he didn’t really seem to enjoy that. The author writes well and the story is well plotted, I just didn’t like the characters. This happens sometimes and based on the other reviews I’ve read, i’m in the minority.

Plot
The plot is Ryder and Lindsay’s relationship. Ryder offers to tutor her in math and thus are forced together. Ryder pursues, Lindsay can barely control herself, yet somehow does, in a back and forth that seems to go on way too long. There are some decent subplots, like Lindsay’s family issues. Her mother relies on men to support her, and Lindsay swears she’ll never be like her mom. Ryder is also preparing for the playoffs, so a relationship may be the last thing he needs, and yet for some unknown reason, he still goes hard after Lindsay. Where the book really worked for me was the hockey aspect. Practice, athletic superstition, parental expectations, and the team dynamics all worked together to keep me invested in the story.

Characters
They both came across as shallow to me. Early on, Lindsay mentions a friend who settled down with a nerdy type, which she can’t understand at all. She’s all about the hard bodies and good looks. Same thing with Ryder. Lindsay’s relationships with other girls is unhealthy, although she does realize that as well as the fact that it’s her own fault. Where I liked Lindsay the most was when I read her confessions. These were heartfelt and honest. But then she’d do something completely stupid and I lost my tenuous respect for her. The rest of the characters intrigued me, though, to the point I want to read the earlier books in the series. I may discover I like Lindsay more if I can see her through the eyes of other characters.

What I Enjoyed About CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER PUCK BUNNY
1. The Confessions.
I liked Lindsay the most when she was being open and honest, when she was unapologetic about her sexuality and her reasons why.

2. Hockey. The hockey aspect was easily my favorite part of the book. It might be a subplot, but it still kept me engaged and I’m not really a rabid hockey fan. Although since the Chargers packed up and left town, the Gulls might be my new favorite local sports team.

3. Ryder. When he wasn’t being a jealous jerk or refusing to take no for an answer, he was a complex character that drove some of my favorite scenes in the book. His history and drama with his dad added a lot of interesting depth to his character.

4. Daddy Issues. Both Ryder and Lindsay suffer from this common young/new adult-ism, but in different ways. I like the way the author approached them differently — more subtly with Lindsay and more direct with Ryder.

5. Breakups. I love me a good angsty romance and while overall the romance was only a meh for me, the big dramatic breakup scene was what turned me around and made me invest in these two.

Bottom Line
Hockey, college romance, and a couple of kids with a lot of growing up to do.

Excerpt #1
Lexa coughed on the sip of water she’d taken. “Let’s get one thing clear. Ransom Cox has never noticed me. I lack the requisite equipment for him to pay appropriate attention. I’m not blonde. My rack isn’t overly endowed. Oh, and all he ever saw in high school was hockey. I was nerdy, and paid zero attention to anything other than great stories.”

“I have it on good authority that you paid attention to more than just your great stories and books. I know for a fact that you used to practice kissing on your hand and pretend it was Ransom.”

Lexa flushed. “Oh, my God. If you ever tell another living soul that, I will kill you. Kill you, dead. Forever.”

Her sister snorted and laughed even as she scooted out of the way of Lexa’s swats. “Think of your great story. I’m telling you. The man, the myth—”

Ella’s voice dropped away, and Lexa looked up, wondering what happened to her sister.

Oh, God. She gulped in a breath. The man, the myth, the penis legend. The hockey God. All six feet, five inches of ripped muscle, the movie-star face, and badass attitude. Standing in the doorway.

Lexa jumped up out of her seat. Too bad her foot was corded around her bag that she’d tucked under the desk, and she couldn’t get proper placement. And so down she went.

Ella ran in behind Ransom. “Oh, my God, Lex.”

Faceplant in front of the guy you always had a crush on, check. Total lack of career direction, check. Yes, her humiliation was complete. Next to her, Ransom’s deep baritone rumbled. “Are you okay?”

Lexa pushed herself to a sitting position. “Yeah, the only thing hurt is my pride, and my forehead. Pretty sure I scraped my hand, too.”

Behind Ransom, Ella’s jaw hung open. She held her arms about a foot apart, as if to indicate a certain…measurement, then cleared her throat as he picked up her wrist and examined it.

“I’m okay.”

Ransom studied her hand. “Are you sure? There’s no pain when I move it?”

Behind him, Ella grinned widely, a mischievous gleam in her eye.

Lexa wanted to die. Matter of fact, if the ground could just open up and swallow her now, that would be awesome. Come on ground. Any moment now. Nothing? Okay, then. “No. It doesn’t hurt.”

“Are you sure about that?” His voice was husky. Low. She’d seen him interviewed enough times in recent years to know that that was just his voice. He didn’t usually say much. But when he did, he always sounded like that. Like he’d just woken up from a long night of sex. Which was the last thing she needed to think about when dealing with Ransom.

Her sister, traitor that she was, called out. “Well, if you’re okay, I’m going to head back to the café. I’m sure the two of you have lots to catch up on. Lex, I’ll send someone over with a sandwich. And that recipe. Though, you might not want to use it for a while. All that garlic. Good to see you, Ransom.”

Lexa groaned. With one faceplant, she’d earned enough humiliation points with her sister for her to hand over that garlic aïoli recipe. Awesome.

Synopsis
He’s a hunky quarterback. She’s a talented artist. He’s sworn off girls. She’s fighting to protect her honor.

Brooding, high school quarterback, Train Everly, was on the fast track to play football at the University of South Carolina until one misstep at a party put his chances in jeopardy. Now in his senior year, he’s sworn off dates, no steady relationships and definitely no sex. The last girl he’d fallen for tore out his heart and stomped on it with stiletto heels. But a new school year brings new students and one girl in particular, Montana Smith. He can’t seem to shake the blonde, curvy, and feisty girl who blows into computer class like a category five hurricane, causing his pulse to race for the end zone. Still, beauty, boobs, and curves are a recipe for disaster. He can’t afford to hook up with her. Not if he wants to protect his heart, and his spot on the USC football team.

Graffiti artist and rebellious eighteen-year-old, Montana Smith has been expelled from high school more times her mother cares to count. So when Montana gets expelled for defacing school property, Montana’s mom decides it’s time to get out of the big city and find a southern sleepy town where Montana surely can’t get into too much trouble. But the small town is ripe with temptation more than Montana or her mom even realize, especially when Montana meets the star quarterback, Train Everly. She’s drawn to his sea-green eyes, and his quiet personality. What she isn’t ready for is his moodiness that seeps under her skin so much so that she decides to make a fool of herself. But she’ll take the stares and whispers over her pathetic performance rather than tango with Train’s ex-girlfriend who will do anything to get Montana out of the picture.

As a relationship between Train and Montana ebbs and flows, both will be tempted to do things that could lead to trouble and broken hearts.

Intended for audiences 18+ Strong language and sexual content

Synopsis
First we were friends. Then we were roommates. Now I want more…

What can I say about Chess Copper? The woman is capable of bringing me to my knees. I know this about five minutes after getting naked for her.

No one is more surprised than me. The prickly photographer my team hired to shoot our annual charity calendar isn’t my usual type. She’s defense to my offense, a challenge at every turn. But when I’m with her, all the regrets and darkness goes away. She makes life fun.

I want to know Chess, be close to her. Which is a bad idea.

Chess is looking for a relationship. I’ve never given a woman more than one night. But when fate leaves Chess without a home, I step up and offer her mine. We’re roommates now. Friends without benefits. But it’s getting harder to keep our hands off each other. And the longer we live together the more I realize she’s becoming my everything.

Trick is… Now that I’ve made her believe I’m a bad bet, how do I convince her to give this player a true shot at forever?

CHESS

Grumbling, I toss on some black lounge pants and my oversized Tulane t-shirt and head to the drugstore.

My head throbs by the time I get there, and my insides are writhing. I rest my hand against my lower stomach and grab a basket before calling James to complain.

“I swear,” I tell him as I grab a bottle of painkillers. “It’s like this entire day has been cursed.”

He snickers. “Curse. Get it? Curse?”

I roll my eyes, even though he can’t see me. “Laugh it up. Meanwhile, it feels as if someone is playing Battleship in my uterus.”

“Poor Chessie bear. At least we know why you were in such a foul mood.”

A flush washes over my cheeks. “Yeah.” Lie. Lie. Lie. A tub of salted caramel gelato makes its way into the basket.

“Tell me you’re getting some gelato,” James says.

I smile. “Just grabbed it.”

“Salted caramel?”

“You know it.”

I find the feminine products aisle and search for my brand. “I’m going to go home, take a long bath with my gelato, and forget this fucking day.” Forget Finn. “And then I’m going to go on Amazon and buying a freaking year’s supply of tampons so I don’t have to make these kinds of emergency runs anymore.”

A low, deep chuckle rumbles from behind me, and all the tiny hairs lift on my arms.

“But you’ll still need your gelato,” a familiar—fuck me, seriously?—voice points out.

My insides swoop even as my cheeks burn.

“Who is that?” James asks in my ear.

I slowly turn on one heel. “The plague,” I say, glaring up at Finn Mannus’s smiling face.

“From asshat to plague.” Finn scrunches up his brow. “I’m not sure if that’s a step down or a tie.”

“Who is that?” James nearly yells now.

I don’t take my eyes off Finn. “I’ll call you back.”

James’s squawks of protest cut off as I hit the end button.

“Are you stalking me, Mannus?”

Finn a rests his hands low on his lean hips. “Having a healthy amount of conceit myself, I have to admire yours, but no, buttercup. My buddy Woodson lives a few blocks away. It’s poker night. I’m stocking up on beer.”

It’s only then I notice a twelve pack tucked under his other arm.

“And tampons?” I ask, with a pointed look around the aisle we’re standing in.

“Not tonight,” he says easily. “Though we used to keep a pack of them back in college. Light flows were perfect for stopping up bloody noses.”

A snort escapes me. “Now there’s a visual.” Somehow, I’ve taken a step closer to him. He’s freshly showered, the golden brown strands of his hair still damp at his temples. And I wonder if he’s just come from the gym or practice. “So back in college you went and bought these tampons?”

“Nah,” he says with a cheeky smile. “I’d ask one of the girls hanging around to get me some.”

“Of course you did.” My nose wrinkles with annoyance.

“Give me a little credit, Chess. I’d buy them now if I had to.”

“Hmm…” I eye him, trying not to return his smile. If only because it’s more fun when he teases. “So why are you in this aisle now, if not for potential nosebleed needs?”

“That’s easy.” He steps closer, a warm wall of muscle and clean scent. “I heard your voice.”

For a second I just blink. “You recognized my voice?”

His gaze darts over my face as if he’s trying to get a read on why I’m gaping at him. “Not to be…ah…rude, but you’re loud when you talk on the phone.”

“Yeah, but… You recognized it.” We’d only just met. It occurs to me that I’d recognized his both times he’d snuck up on me. Then again, his voice is distinctive, flowing like hot honey when he’s relaxed or hammering down like iron to rock when he’s taking command of a situation.

A soft flush of pink tints the tips of his ears. If I wasn’t staring at him, I might have missed it. He shifts his weight. “Was I not supposed to?”

“No. Yes.” I shake my head and laugh. “I don’t know.”

He grins then. “You’re cute when you’re flustered.”

“I’m not flustered.” I am.

She sits quietly as I eat, and shakes her head when I offer her a sandwich section. Because I’m hungry, and because I don’t like the idea of her having to wait for me to eat, I wolf down my food. The brownie follows with a few, quick bites.

Wiping my hands on a napkin, I set the plate and empty can on a side table, and then let out a contented sigh. “Thanks. I needed that.”

Her smile is small and quick. “I should have fed you as soon as you got here.”

“I’m good now.”

Chess braces her hands on the seat and leans forward to watch her feet as we slowly rock the swing. Silence descends, thick and awkward, and for the first time in her presence, I’m at a loss for words.

I don’t know this girl. Not really, and yet I’ve inserted myself into her life with a determination I usually reserve for winning games. Except I have no endgame here. I told her I want to be friends. But how does that work for us?

Our friends and lives couldn’t be any more different. Parties for me are self-congratulatory events, filled with people whose one focus seems to be bolstering my ego, followed by me searching for a quick hookup. And my friends are all part of football in some way. We talk football or sports. It’s a narrow focus life, but it’s my comfort zone. That chafes too, knowing I live a life that seems wild and free to outsiders but is actually small and structured on the inside.

The silence has stretched too long. I should go. But I don’t move. If I go, I know it will be the end of whatever this is. Embarrassment will have me avoiding seeking her out again. Likely, she’ll do the same. And that will be that.

The knowledge sits like a stone on my chest.

“I’m sorry about my friends,” Chess says. “They can be uncomfortably brazen.”

“So can mine.” I shrug. “Your friends are…fun.”

Her lips pull tight. “They can be. But they were definitely giving me—and by extension—you shit tonight.” She bites her bottom lip. “I don’t think they know what to make of you.”

“So I wasn’t imagining things.”

“’Fraid not.”

The novel sensation of being a fish tossed into the wrong pond grows. I’ve taken away Chess’s fun by coming here, and I’m sorry for it.

“I shouldn’t have asked you to come here,” Chess says in a low voice.

She’s only echoing my thoughts but the stone sitting on my chest pushes harder against my ribs.

Chess makes a small sound, as if she’s trying to laugh but can’t. “Parties suck when you arrive halfway through and don’t know anyone.”

“I know you,” I point out quietly.

She turns and the porch light illuminates her face. Green eyes met mine and hold, as a slow, true smile curls over her cherry lips. Something inside of me shifts and slides. I want to kiss Chester Copper. Haul her onto my lap and make out with her like we’re teenagers hiding out at our parents’ party. But that’s not what she invited me here for.

“I wanted to see you,” she confesses in that husky morning voice that goes straight to my cock. She turns away and stares out into the darkness. “It’s weird, you know? But hanging out with you was so unexpected it kind of felt like I imagined the whole thing.”

I know exactly what she means. My hand settles next to hers, close enough that our pinkies touch. That small point of contact sparks along my skin, makes me want to move closer. I hold steady because I don’t trust myself not to act. “I wanted to see you too,” I tell her. “It’s been a long fucking day.”

I hadn’t planned to admit that, but it feels good to tell her.

Chess eases back against the seat and then curls her fingers over mine with a light squeeze. The unexpected touch holds all my attention. It’s nothing more than a simple offer of comfort, and here I am twitching in my seat as if she’d cupped my dick instead. I’m in so much trouble here because this woman is getting to me in ways I don’t know how to navigate. But I don’t pull away. Not one fucking chance of that.

Chess speaks, pulling me attention back to our conversation. “So tell me about it.”

I can’t remember the last time anyone asked me to tell them about my day. Likely, no one ever has.

So I do. And with every word that leaves my mouth, a little bit more of my stress eases. No, I don’t yet truly know Chess. And yes, our lives are different. But there’s no way I’m ending this. Because when it’s just her and me, everything else falls away. I’m not going to let myself forget that again.

Excerpt #3
There has to be some benefit from having a friend as big as me. That way, you get to walk softly and carry a big stick.”

Oh, shit. He said stick.

This made her mind immediately drift to the length of his erection pressing into her hip. It was as if he knew she was thinking about it. Resolutely, she kept her gaze on his eyes. She saw the flicker of mischievousness in them. She also saw something else. Was it interest? No, this was Fox. He was a flirt. He had swaths of women lined up for him. His last name played a big part in that because he had money, but the main reason women lined up for Fox Coulter was his damn face. The guy could easily be a movie star with his full lips, high cheekbones, and that straight, regal nose. His deep-set eyes burned a bright blue every time he gazed at her.

’m going to combust.

Then there was his body. He had a ridiculous build, the kind you had to work hard for, but not overly done. He was tall and muscular, but lean at the same time.

“Just go ahead and ignore that big stick. I’ve had a lot to drink, and as far as he’s concerned, you’re a warm, available female. Don’t mind him.”

She tried to deflect. “What is this stick you speak of?”

The thick length of him twitched again, almost causing her to moan. When was the last time she had a good, old-fashioned, toe-curling orgasm?

Hell, when was the last time I even had the opportunity?

Ryan didn’t like kissing. He thought it was weird, so for over a year no one had even kissed her properly. The kind of kisses that made the panties wet, the hair wild, and the belly buzz and flip around. Man, she missed those kinds of kisses.

Fox licked his bottom lip. As he leaned in closer, Sasha held her ground and kept her gaze locked on his.

“Sash—” the way he said her name was more of a question. As if he were trying to determine what was happening. Trying to decide if he should give in to their tension. Trying to figure out what the hell they were doing.

Sasha took a deliberate step back. She reminded herself that she had no desire to be yet another notch on Fox Coulter’s bedpost. The Coulter boys were notorious, from Bryce all the way down to Gage. Fox was no different from his brothers. His exploits were legendary. He’d told Sasha about most of them himself.

Do you really want to be one of those girls, one of those groupies?

Hell, yes! Her libido screamed even as her mind tried to talk her out of it. Regardless, she still had no desire to be another notch.

Synopsis
From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes SMART TASS, a new Romantic Comedy.

He’s the hot quarterback all the girls want. She’s the smart girl he loves to pick on. And now that they’re all grown up, things are about to get geekin’ ugly…

My name is Tass. I’m smart, I’m driven, and I am determined not to let prankster Hunter Johnson continue raining on my parade. When we were little, he’d pull my hair and call me names. When we were teenagers, he’d throw food and tease me for being a flat-chested virgin.

But now that we’ve ended up at the same college, he’s out of his hot head if he thinks he can keep messing with my life. It’s like he’s fixated on me or something. Well, guess what, Mr. Amazefootball? I’m not that geeky little girl anymore and you do not screw with a smart woman.

So what’s my plan?

It’s definitely wild, and he’s about to find out…

SMART TASS Teaser 1

Excerpt
“Please, Tassie?”

I look at my pink low-top Converse, then at him, and back to the shoes. “Give me one good reason why I should help you?” Because I really, really need one. Especially since I feel like a complete moron for actually wanting to help him. It’s like I can’t resist rescuing the stray puppy who’s bitten me a thousand times.

“We’d be helping each other,” he explains. “I need a much cheaper place to live and you want to get into the Tri-Kapps.”

“Ah!” I say, holding up my index finger. “But do I want it badly enough to let everyone think you’ve taken my pristine chariot out for its maiden voyage?”

“Your…chariot?”

“What would you like me to call it? My vaginal membrane? My cherry? My flower of purity? The winner’s ribbon for my hump-day race?”

His handsome face contorts. “Chariot works.”

“Great. And you’re still not riding it.”

“I didn’t ask to. It’s just something we’ll let people think so I get the points. In exchange, for the next few weeks, I’ll dote when we’re around your uptight, intellectual elitist sorority sisters. And then you dump me. Simple.”

I give it some thought—what it would mean to allow the blemish on my reputation.

“Come on, Tass. You know this is the best option for us both. Paweeeze?”

I look at Hunter, who has giant blue, anime-saucer eyes and a lower lip that’s pouting for its life.

“No.” I shake my finger at him. “Not the puppy face, Hunter.”

He tugs on the hem of my T-shirt, his lower lip quivering. “Tassie…”

“Ugh. You are so juvenile. You know that, right?”

His face returns to its normal, annoyingly handsome perfection. “Yes. And thank you. You’re making the right choice.”

“Wait. I didn’t agree to—”

He leans down and plants a big wet, closed-mouth kiss on my lips.

Excerpt #2
He knew where his mind should be. But that didn’t matter because right now it was filled with her, and how the scent of her clung to his skin. Someone that was supposed to be a one-night stand had somehow burrowed her way into his mind. Fine, whatever. He’d figure it out. He could find her again. How hard could it be?

Pulling on a pair of boxers, he looked around his apartment for any trace of her, but found nothing. No excuse to look her up to return something she forgot. If he wanted to see her again, he’d have to find her. And he was surprised by how strong that impulse was.

He’d hooked up a lot, but he’d never had a one-night stand that had gone quite like that. But then, he rarely woke during the night, and so he’d never taken the time to talk, like he had with Cece. Or maybe they’d overshared. He wondered if that was what had run her off so easily. He shook his head to force the thought aside. Not with what had happened between them after their little talk. He wouldn’t believe that they’d been able to connect so strongly physically, if the personal things they shared were what had made her run.

He’d never felt a connection like that before. Maybe her friend had dropped digits. If he couldn’t find her, that was it, he’d let it go. But he at least had to try.

Blog Tour – Review + Giveaway – OFF THE ICE (Juniper Falls) by Julie Cross

OFF THE ICE Blog Tour

OFF THE ICE (Juniper Falls #1) by Julie Cross

OFF THE ICE (Juniper Falls #1) by Julie Cross

Synopsis
The NY Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Whatever Life Throws at You kicks off a brand-new series perfect for fans of Miranda Kennealy and Abbi Glines.

All is fair in love and hockey…

Claire O’Connor is back in Juniper Falls, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be. One semester off, that’s what she promised herself. Just long enough to take care of her father and keep the family business—a hockey bar beside the ice rink—afloat. After that, she’s getting the hell out. Again.

Enter Tate Tanley. What happened between them the night before she left town resurfaces the second they lay eyes on each other. But the guy she remembers has been replaced by a total hottie. When Tate is unexpectedly called in to take over for the hockey team’s star goalie, suddenly he’s in the spotlight and on his way to becoming just another egotistical varsity hockey player. And Claire’s sworn off Juniper Falls hockey players for good.

It’s the absolute worst time to fall in love.

For Tate and Claire, hockey isn’t just a game. And they both might not survive a body check to the heart..

.

.

—————————————————————————-

My Review
Tate Tanley is the starting goalie on his high school hockey team in Minnesota, where hockey is a religion. Claire O’Connor is back in town from Northwestern University after her father is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. When she sees Tate for the first time in over a year, she realizes her best friend’s little brother isn’t so little anymore. Tate has had a massive crush on Claire most of his life, but he’s always been the kid brother. Not anymore. These two dance around attraction mixed-up with a lifelong friendship set against Claire’s dreams for her future and Tate’s goals on and off the ice. It’s a super sweet romance with deeply developed characters.

Plot
The romance is the primary plot, but it’s missing that teen angst that I’ve grown to love in Julie Cross’s stories. What it lacks in that department, it more than makes up for in the supporting plots. Tate’s hockey career, college recruiting, and his relationship with his town-legend father. Claire has her issues with her dad’s health and what she wants to do with her college career, saving her family’s business, and more. Told from dual-points-of-view, there’s a lot of territory covered.

The Characters
No one does characters like Julie Cross. Tate is complex, fascinating, and completely loveable. The author takes usdeep inside his head and I never doubt it’s a guy’s point of view. Unfortunately, Claire fell a little flat for me. I struggled to like her her. I felt for her, I mean, who wouldn’t with everything she was dealing with, but I just didn’t love her the way I do so many of Ms. Cross’s characters (Ellie from Chasing Truth, for example). This was a pretty character-heavy story and I had a tough time keeping some of the hockey players straight in my head, but Tate’s and Claire’s families came across in vivid color.

World Building
There’s a lot of hockey here, something I didn’t know that much about before reading Off the Ice. I feel as if I understand it better now. To me, it’s always been “soccer played on ice with sticks.” And maybe there’s a little bit of that to it still, but it sounds a lot more interesting. I may even try to take in a San Diego Gulls game and watch it live.

What Didn’t Work for Me
1. The romance. It wasn’t that it didn’t work so much as there wasn’t ever a doubt they might not end up together. The romance lacked much in the way of overt conflict. It’s almost as if these two teens were wise beyond their years when it came to relationships.

Top Five Things I Enjoyed About OFF THE ICE
1. The realness. I love that nothing was glossed over. The emotions, and feelings, and events were all written with such intensity, they grabbed me and pulled me into the story.

2. Tate. He’s so deeply drawn, it’s hard not to get such a sense of who he is and I love him all the more for his flaws.

3. Hockey. And not just the games. The practice and politics surrounding high school hockey was fascinating.

4. Cancer. No, I don’t like cancer, but I love that the author didn’t gloss over the ugly effects of this heinous disease.

5. Roger. Tate’s stepfather grows more important in Tate’s life throughout the story, so we catch glimpses of him early on, that grow more frequent as the book progresses until we get to see him for who he really is. Hint: he’s one of the really good guys.

Bottom Line
OFF THE ICE is a sweet small-town high school romance. A Friday Night Lights for the hockey crowd.

Synopsis
NOAH
As a goalkeeper, I am trained to catch the ball, not a spirited bombshell called Sophie.

This year is about righting the wrong Papa did to Maman. It’s also about proving my worth to Coach and helping my team win gold at the French Water Polo Championship. With an unruly mutt for company and a part-time gig to pay rent, I’m one hundred percent focused on my objectives. That is, until I catch an intruder poking around my kitchen.

Sophie Bander turns my world upside down. My new landlord’s daughter isn’t just the hottest woman alive—she’s the stuff of dreams, the object of my deepest, wildest fantasies. But no matter. Nothing—not even Sophie—can make me abandon my goals. Except… I want her to distraction. And that’s the understatement of the century.

SOPHIE
As a realtor, my job is to let properties to tenants, not let one into my heart.

This year is about proving to Dad I can be a first-class realtor and a worthy associate. That’s why I’m in Paris, learning the ropes at a large agency. When I’m done, I’ll go back to Key West, join the family business, and then marry the man of Dad’s dreams. I don’t need to be attracted to the guy—I’m incapable of sexual attraction, anyway.

That is, until a hunk of a tenant mistakes me for a thief and presses me against the wall in his kitchen. Noah Masson turns my life into a mess. He makes me blush and laugh, and fantasize about him all the damn time. He awakens my body. And yet, not even dreamboat Noah can get me sidetracked from my goals. Or can he?.

Synopsis
As the youngest of four, Dylan has always been the baby. But don’t let that fool you; she’s not your average baby sister. Growing up with three older brothers left Dylan with a lack of femininity and in its place, a real guy’s girl personality. Sports, beer, burping, you name it; but don’t even think about going near her feet with a pair of heels.

When Dylan meets Tyler Vaughn, the famous and devastatingly attractive football superstar at work one morning, she’s thrilled by his good stats, not his good looks. But the wide receiver—and sweet romantic—throws her for a loop when he pursues her despite what she knows is missing, her feminine charm.

Now Dylan must reconcile the fact that this guy may actually like her, and even scarier, she may like him back. Dylan speaks sports and sarcasm fluently but romance, now that’s something completely foreign to her. What’s an emotionally-allergic guy’s girl supposed to do with a hopeless romantic?

FALLING FOR BOSTON Teaser 1

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt #2
I hung up without responding. Not only was I late but the conference room on this floor was conveniently located on the opposite side of the building. Hastily grabbing everything I needed for the meeting, I took off.

Turning the corner to head towards the conference room at Mach 10, I never even saw it coming. I knocked into something solid and hard, like a wall. A warm wall but a wall nonetheless.

“Oof!” the wall grunted.

“Jesus!” I yelled as I stumbled backward. The crash was akin to that of a car accident; loud, jolting. Only I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. I’d collided with the wall so hard I lost my balance and fell on my ass.

In the process of falling, I’d flailed. Everything I was holding went flying including the most precious item I’d been carrying—my Bruins mug full of fresh coffee. Despite my attempt to save the mug, it was no use. I bobbled it like an elusive bar of slippery soap in the shower, and it fell to the floor where it smashed, splintering into pieces. And while this harrowing event was occurring; I also managed to spill coffee all over myself.

You know the saying “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”? To me, Hell hath no fury like a Dylan without coffee. I was fuming, and also quite literally steaming thanks to the hot coffee I was now wearing.

I didn’t even want to think about the bad juju that would come from breaking my lucky mug. The Bruins were on a hot streak headed into the playoffs. I hadn’t used another mug since they started winning.

Fudge, only I didn’t say fudge.

I looked around at the confetti surrounding me before the pain radiating from my tailbone reached my brain.

“Ouch, that’s gonna leave a mark,” I said to myself.
“Well, you’re quoting Tommy Boy, so I don’t think you’re concussed. Are you okay?”
The deep voice had come from the offending wall, but I had yet to look at his face. I was still surveying

the damage around me. My brain was foggy, still a little cuckoo kachoo from our head-on collision.
“No, I’m late for a meeting. I need to get to the conference room like yesterday,” I said, shifting to my

hands and knees and picking up the broken pieces of my mug.
“Yeah, you were walking pretty fast. I didn’t even see you coming. Are you sure you’re all right?” The Wall asked.

“I’m all right,” I said dismissively. Finished picking up the pieces of my trashed mug, I saw a hand in my periphery offering to help me stand. It was a huge mitt, complete with long fingers that could palm a basketball. I grabbed onto it, feeling the warmth of its skin as it completely swallowed my tiny hand.

Once I was standing, I finally looked up at the face of my would-be attacker, The Wall. The nickname was permanently lodged in my mind. It was a habit. I worked in sports, we nicknamed everyone. The Great Bambino, Dr. Dunkenstein, The Fridge, Big Papi, The Great One, A-Roid, you get my point. We loved nicknames, and once it caught on, you could never shake it.

With one glance, a shock ran up my spine as my breath caught in my throat, and my heart started to race. I knew that face.
You see, I had literally just run into Tyler freaking Vaughn. I may have been calling him The Wall in my head but in real life, he was one of the top receivers in the NFL. And I had just plowed right into him. “Shit,” I blurted out. What was with me today? I seemed to have a terrible case of the shits – verbally. “I know, I’m sorry about your mug,” he answered regretfully.

“Forget about the mug,” I said frantically. “Are you okay?”

He didn’t answer, rather just looked at me in stunned silence. I prayed that I hadn’t hurt him. The last thing I needed was to send a high-profile player to the Injured Reserve because I hadn’t been paying attention to where I was going and accidentally cracked one of his ribs.

I waved my hand in front of his face. “Hello? Anybody home? You need me to go get some smelling salts?”

His eyes finally focused, and he cleared his throat. “Sorry,” he said with a smile.

Dear Lord in Heaven, that smile was blinding. Not in a fake white teeth kind of way but it… glowed. Almost as if the clouds had opened up and the sun was shining directly on him, and only him.

Vaughn was a devastating matchup for opponents, and I guess that wasn’t all. Looking at him from two feet away I was enlightened to the fact that, apparently, Vaughn was also devastatingly good looking. I’m not talking a cute smile or endearing freckles. I’m talking Mega Jackpot winner of the Genetic Lottery, one-in-a- million odds. His effervescent beauty would be evident even to a blind person.

“Yeah, I’m okay. Nothing I’m not used to. I just usually have pads on,” Vaughn added making me chuckle. Lucky for me, he’d had the mental acuity to crack a joke.

“You sure?” I double checked anyway despite his assertion. Athletes were notoriously stubborn; they’d never admit they were hurt. Their bone could be poking through their skin, and they’d just say it’s a scratch. Yeah, a scratch. And you’re an idiot.

“Positive,” he reaffirmed. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

I waved him off. “I’ll be okay. It was my fault; I wasn’t looking where I was going. I’ll just rub some dirt on it or something.”

“Amazing how well dirt works on injuries, huh?” he said with a chuckle. “I guess I’ll stop bothering you now so you can get back to work. I know you’re a day late.”

I shook my head at the sarcastic comment, but I couldn’t help but smile.

“Make sure you walk safely. Maybe next time try to use a turn signal before you cross traffic. It might help you avoid another collision,” he added.

That time, I laughed. Vaughn was a smart-ass, who knew? I couldn’t hold it against him, though; I was a smart-ass myself. I’d never been the serious one, always the goofy, oddball jokester. I got exceptionally awkward when things got, well, awkward. I could appreciate the fact that he’d cracked a joke to infuse some levity. It was exactly the kind of thing I would do.

He extended his hand for a handshake. “I’m Tyler Vaughn, by the way. It’s nice to meet you…” he trailed off indicating he was waiting for me to introduce myself.

“Dylan,” I offered. “Dylan Riley.”

“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Dylan Riley,” he said, smiling at me again. Once again, with that smile the heavens opened up, his face aglow, and yet all I saw… was blue.

Synopsis
Sex and spice and cold as ice.

Those are the facts I uncover about football star Lennox Hardy after a long night of tequila and bad choices. Hardly the stuff of tabloid headlines. Everyone knows the NFL’s star quarterback is a womanizing bad boy whose voicemail is practically set to “no comment.”

What they might not know is that the sex? Kind of disappointing.

Of course, that didn’t stop me from getting knocked up.

But it’s when I confront Lennox and discover that I’d actually slept with his identical twin brother Logan, a rising politician, that my life goes from page twelve news to a gossip columnist’s wet dream.

Lennox is used to cleaning up his brother’s messes, and he barely blinks before he asks me to move in with him and pretend the baby is his, at least until his brother’s election is over. Giving me full access to his elusive, private life and the story that will make my career.

What’s a reporter to do?

But sharing an apartment with a brooding, private man who’s sexy as sin and my raging hormones may not have been the best idea. And when the only investigating I do happens with our clothes off, I know my plan has gone seriously awry…

Excerpt #1
Carefully, I slip out from under the covers and drop to my knees on the floor.  Maybe I can find some sort of evidence before he wakes up.  Something that will appease Giselle, but not something that could hurt Lennox in any kind of way.   I slowly turn and start to crawl away from the bed.  Lennox rustles behind me.  I freeze.  I dare a slow head turn in his general direction.

The rise and fall of his chest is steady.  Even. Rhythmic.  A peaceful, contented smile curls along the edges of his mouth.  For a half a second, I take a little bit of pride that I may be at least partially responsible for putting it there.  He has one arm crooked, hand tucked beneath a tousled mop of sheepdog blonde.  Long, golden lashes brush his high cheekbones as he sleeps undisturbed.

I exhale a heavy, but quiet, sigh of relief and continue my subtle egress.  I get halfway across the room when I freeze in my tracks.

What am I doing?  This isn’t me! What are you going to do?  Dig through his trash?  Root through his mail?

On hands and knees in the middle of the floor, I start to give myself a well-deserved mental ass chewing.

“Well, now there’s a position I could get used to.”  Lennox’s voice teases in a sleepy drawl behind me.  My head droops in embarrassment.

Lennox yawned like lion as he stretched his toned arms over his head.  “So, I’ve heard of the ‘walk of shame’, but I gotta admit.  I’ve never seen a ‘crawl of shame.’  Where are you off to?”

Alright, Sloane.  Suck it up.

Amazon bestselling author Ava Ashley may look like the girl next door, but her steamy romances reveal a very naughty side. Raised in small town Ohio and now living in Homer, Alaska it’s amazing that she hasn’t increased the average temperature in her area of the state with her steamy writing. And she loves reading new adult romance novels as much as she enjoys writing them.

Ava likes spending time outdoors and does a lot of hiking and cycling with her husband and four children. When she can get away on her own, she’ll often take pen and paper along, find a secluded spot and let the environment inspire her. Of course, that inspiration frequently results in characters tearing each other’s clothes off, but you would expect nothing less from a romance writer.
