About the Author
I live in Dallas but I am not a Texan by birth, I am a transplant from Tennessee and married a true Texan so I had to stay. We live in a older home in Dallas proper with our son and goldendoodle (who is roughly the size of a pony).

Writing isn’t my day job, however it is my joy and favorite hobby. I enjoy sending my friends new chapters nightly and hearing their reactions the next day. That is why I write, being published is just a bonus really. My real job is the same every day, but at night I get to be someone else and write about all these fun adventures and sexcapades:) When I’m writing you can find me on the couch, earbuds in and a full glass of wine beside me. Music inspires my stores, at the end of each book I list the playlist that helped me through writing the novel.

When I am not working or writing, I am reading. I go through about 3 books a week and I am 100% sure that I’m that annoying person at book-club that gets on to people when they are not keeping up with the monthly readings or suggest the movie is as good as a book (Sometimes I wish I could vote those people out of book-club like they do on Survivor. “The tribe has spoken”).

My favorite authors that inspire my writing are: Colleen Hoover, Sarah J. Maas, Sandra Brown, and Rainbow Rowell..

Synopsis
A sabotaged CIA operation makes Navy Trent a captive. But surviving the kidnapping is just the beginning of her ordeal. The CIA will kill her if she doesn’t stay quiet. The saboteurs will kill her if she does. Navy is forced into a high-tech, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse where only her wits – and a little bit of luck – can keep her alive.

—————————————————————————-

My Review
Navy Trent’s life is turned upside down when she’s mistaken for an influential senator’s niece and is kidnapped by terrorists attempting to get the identities of CIA operatives. Her ability to escape and rescue her friends isn’t the end of her ordeal, it’s only the beginning. She knows more about what happened than she’s supposed to and someone wants to keep her quiet. Maybe permanently. TRAP AND TRACE is a fast-paced, wild ride, part thriller, part suspense, part mystery. I wasn’t sure I was going to like Navy in the beginning, but she won me over.

Plot
The book was expertly plotted. There were so many twists and turns, all of which were perfectly foreshadowed. I loved that I never knew what was going to happen next. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was proven wrong. My only complaint is that there was a lot of repetitiveness, the same things being told from different points of view, that had me skimming portions.

Characters
I wasn’t sure about Navy at first. She seemed almost too contrived, but as the story unfolded and I learned more about her, it became apparent that everything she did was well within her established character. I loved the entire cast, from Jackson, to Byron, to Erin. Even William came across as the total tool he was for completely plausible reasons.

What I Enjoyed About TRAP AND TRACE
1. Plotting.
The plotting was among the best I’ve ever read!

2. Research. The author did her homework. The world of spies felt authentic and even something as simple as the right way to meditate was accurate.

3. Unexpected Twists. Kept me turning pages long after I should have gone to sleep.

4. Characters. Rich and complex, they drive the story in ways lesser characters couldn’t.

5. The End. No spoilers, here, but it was perfect.

Bottom Line
Expertly plotted suspense with so many unexpected twists. Will be reading more by this author!

I was provided with a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis
Dr. Marie Wilson is a scientist on the verge of a breakthrough. She has come to Montana on the eve of a blizzard to prove her small, portable solar panel can generate electricity even in the harshest environment. But when four men invade her remote cabin with plans to kill her, she knows she’s in trouble.

Ex-Special Forces soldier, David Quinn, has had enough of danger and death. All he wants is to be left alone on his Montana acreage to pursue his dream of being a beekeeper. But when his old mentor convinces him to help retrieve a stolen solar panel, he thinks it will be a simple job. But the moment he sets eyes on Marie, he knows their assignment is all kinds of wrong.

Together, they escape. Chased by a businessman with unlimited resources, a gunman and a corrupt police force, they are thrust into the frozen Montana landscape. Can a cynical soldier and a naive scientist learn about love and trust in order to survive?

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
A crack of splintering wood and the door crashed open. Marie jumped to her feet, her heart pounding. A scream lodged in her throat as four men burst in, filling the tiny space. She raced to the fireplace and grabbed the poker.

A handsome blond-haired man led the way. He was so good looking he could be an actor. He had a square jaw and wore a well-tailored leather jacket. Even his fair hair was perfectly trimmed. Two burly men followed, both with dark, short-cropped hair. They could be twins. Their thick bodies and the way they swung their arms reminded her of a pair of gorillas. They also had the same flattened nose and malicious, small, dark eyes. They moved to the back of the room near the sink. The last man had unkempt, long, sandy-colored hair. He wore a crumpled, hooded camouflage jacket and baggy gray pants. A long scar ran across one side of his face, starting at his ear and running through his beard, parting it with a jagged white line. He didn’t say a word. He simply nodded at the poker in her hand and shook his head, silently telling her to drop her weapon.

Sensing that any attempt to fight him would be futile, she let it fall to the ground. “You can take the money. I don’t have—”

“Shut up,” the handsome blond barked. A vein on his forehead bulged as he scowled.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. She prayed they would take what they wanted and leave.

Handsome stepped in front of her and placed the barrel of his handgun between her eyes. “Tell us where it is.”

“What are you doing?” The man with the scar strolled over and stood next to her. In her peripheral vision, she could make out his intense, pale, lifeless eyes.

He leaned close to her face so his warm breath touched her cheek. “This is all wrong.”

A small squeal emanated from her throat. He was too close. Too scary. Killer. The word rang through her mind. The scar, those dead eyes, and his demeanor gave the impression of a lethal, terrifying man.

“What do you mean? Our intel is good.” The vein on Handsome’s forehead throbbed to life.

With one finger, Killer nudged the pistol away from her head. “First, how can she tell us where it is when she’s too frightened to talk?”

Handsome shrugged, revealing a smile with perfect white teeth.

Marie released a huge breath. She needed to do something, but couldn’t focus, couldn’t form a coherent thought.

“Second,” Killer continued, “what do we really know about this situation?”

Handsome sneered. “You were in the army. You know how it is. We don’t make the decisions. We follow orders.”

“And what exactly are our orders?” Killer asked, his voice low and calm.

“We’re to retrieve what was stolen and eliminate the girl.”

There had to be a misunderstanding. She was a scientist, not someone who needed to be eliminated.

Synopsis
In PERILOUS TRUST, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy brings you the first book in a new romantic suspense series! OFF THE GRID: An FBI Trilogy offers three breath-stealing books filled with action-packed plot, heart-stopping romance, and page-turning suspense.

It was one dark night that brought Damon Wolfe and Sophie Parker together. They were two tortured souls, looking for escape, and they weren’t supposed to see each other ever again…

Four years later, Sophie’s FBI father, who is also Damon’s mentor, is killed in a suspicious car crash after leaving Sophie a cryptic message to trust no one from the agency. When Damon shows up looking for her, she isn’t sure if he’s friend or enemy, but she knows he could easily rip apart what is left of her heart.

The last thing Damon wants is to get involved with Sophie again. It was hard enough to walk away the first time. But she’s in trouble, her father’s reputation is under attack, and the lives of his fellow agents are at stake if there’s a traitor in their midst.

When someone starts shooting at them, they have no choice but to go on the run and off the grid. Everyone in their world becomes a suspect. They want to uncover the truth, but will it turn out to be the last thing they expect? Proving her father’s innocence might just cost them their hearts…and their lives…

—————————————————————————-

Excerpt
“Why did you run away from your apartment, your friends, your father’s coworkers? Why did you just disappear, Sophie?” Damon asked.

“Because someone killed my dad.”

“It’s possible it was an accident.”

“You don’t believe that any more than I do.”

“Maybe not, but I think something specific spooked you.”

“You mean like the two men I saw going into my apartment building?”

“You saw the men who broke into your apartment?” he asked in surprise.

“I don’t know if they were the ones, but they could have been.”

“What did they look like?”

“Law enforcement, maybe—I don’t know.”

Damon stared back at her, and she could see him running through her words in his head. “Why would you be afraid of law enforcement when your father is FBI?”

“Gut instinct,” she lied, knowing she wouldn’t have been afraid at all if her father hadn’t told her to be. “And it looks like I was right to run. If I’d gone to my apartment, who knows what would have happened?”

His lips drew into a hard line. “Look, Sophie, I want to help you.”

“Why? Why on earth would you want to help me?”

His gaze darkened, and the air sizzled between them as they found themselves back in a place probably neither of them wanted to revisit, but they were there all the same.

“We’re not friends,” she said quickly, needing to break the tension. “We’re not anything. We haven’t seen each other in four years. Why do you care where I am, what I’m doing? Is it because of loyalty to my dad? That has to be it, right? Nothing else could have made you drive all the way up here.”

“I should have called you after that night,” he said.

“I’m not looking for an apology.”

“Aren’t you?”

“No. Maybe. No,” she said, hating to sound so uncertain. “None of that is important now. I have bigger problems.”

“Then let’s talk about now,” he said, relief in his eyes as he changed the subject. “I respected your father. He was a mentor to me. I owe him for that, and I know that he would want me to help you. He trusted me, and I hope you can trust me, too.”

“I don’t know if my father trusted you,” she said, shaking her head.

Surprise and anger flared in his eyes. “Why would you say that?”

“Because he told me not to trust anyone from the bureau, and since you’re an agent, that includes you. Please, just go. Just leave me alone,” she pleaded, desperate to get him out of the cabin before she did something even more stupid—like start to trust him. “I’ll disappear. I’ll go somewhere no one else knows about. You don’t have to worry about me. You’ve done your duty. You came after me. You did that for my dad. Now do something for me—leave me alone. You’ve managed it for four years. You can keep going.”

His mouth tightened. “I’m not leaving you alone. You won’t be safe. You can’t get help from a friend, because you’ll put them in danger, and even if you are very careful, you’ll make a mistake. You don’t know how to stay off the radar, but I do. You’re going to have to trust someone at some point. You’re going to have to put your anger aside and let it be me.”

Before she could answer, she was suddenly hit with a shower of glass from the nearby window.

What the hell had just happened?

Another pane blew out, and something whizzed by her ear.

Damon grabbed her arm and pulled down as a third window exploded.

Someone was shooting at her!

Excerpt
She could see the war going on in Damon’s eyes, the need to do the right thing, the desire to feel what they’d felt once before.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” he said huskily.

“You won’t hurt me.”

“You said that the last time, but I hurt you then, and I don’t want to do it again.”

“That was different. We know each other better now.”

“That might be true, but there’s something else that’s also true—I don’t do love, Sophie. I’m not good at it, and it doesn’t work out. I might be exactly what you want in the night, but I will never be what you want in the morning.”

“In the morning? We don’t even know if we’re going to have a morning, Damon. You told me that I need to stay in the moment. This is the moment. So, stop fighting. Please, stop fighting.”

“You’re not playing fair, Sophie.”

“I’m not playing at all,” she said, recklessness driving her forward. She pressed her mouth against his, and took what she wanted. It was a heady, glorious, freeing feeling.

Synopsis
In this electrifying novel from USA Today Bestselling Author Kennedy Layne, the Safeguard team is coming ever closer to catching an elusive serial killer who might very well be hunting one of their own…

Sawyer Madison has spent the last few months hunting down a sadistic killer.  He and his team don’t seem to be any closer to solving this particular case that has hit a little too close to home. Fortunately, they had all served in the Corps. That kind of training and dedication meant none of them considered quitting before the mission was done.

Camryn Novak had spent most of her childhood, and a large part of her adult life, dealing with her overprotective brother. So when an admirer becomes a little too obsessed with her due to her high-profile career, she decides it would be simpler to reach out to someone a little less emotionally invested.

Sawyer never expected to bump into the sister of one of his teammates while traveling on assignment.  Women like her were off limits—one shouldn’t mix business with pleasure.  One burning touch was all it took to make his good intentions go up in flames.  Unfortunately, it won’t just be her brother’s wrath he’s forced to face when an unknown perp targets Camryn—it might very well be the same psychopath they’ve been hunting all along..

Excerpt
Camryn handed him a white, tattered square with black ink soaked through both sides. He turned it so that the inscription was legible. “My name and a date… one that doesn’t occur for another two weeks. I started thinking about the case you and my brother are working on and my thoughts kind of ran away from me.”

“What do you mean?” Sawyer asked, continuing to stare at the torn napkin in his hand. There was no way in hell she could be referring to their quarry— Shepherd Moss. What was the off-chance that a sadistic serial killer would take that particular avenue of approach and basically announce to the entire world that he was going to kill his next victim— who also just so happened to be the relative of one of the agents searching for the same notorious murderer? It sounded ludicrous to even suggest it, but he’d seen some horribly weird shit in his line of work. Camryn’s silence finally had him looking up, catching her slightly awkward facial expression. Oh, shit. “Camryn, what did you do?”

“I looked up to find him standing near the entryway of the foyer on Royal, still hiding behind his camera and taking pictures of me signing autographs,” Camryn confessed somewhat dismissively with a small shrug of her shoulder. The gentle lines around her eyes contracted in an effort to stem her current pain. He really needed to get her somewhere more comfortable. “I went after him.”

“What do you mean, you went after him?” Sawyer asked with a rather pissed-off inflection, wanting clarification before he told her that such a move was beyond foolish. He didn’t doubt that Brody taught her what to do in certain situations, but it appeared that she didn’t truly understand the significance of his advice.

“I wanted to confront him, to find out what he wanted from me,” Camryn said rather defensively. She squared her shoulders and let her arms hang down her sides, even closing her manicured fingernails into the palms of her hands. “He stood there and pointed toward the napkin, Sawyer. He was the one who gave it to me. This isn’t your typical obsessed fan, wanting to say hi or take a picture with me to show his friends. He was… different.”

Sawyer was being placed in a relatively onerous position, because even the slightest chance that Camryn had been placed in the crosshairs of a psychopath meant taking certain precautions. She must have sensed what he was about to say, because she was already shaking her head and pushing back against the wall. She didn’t even bother to look back as she headed for the double doors that would take her out through the waiting room full of emergency patients.

“Camryn, stop.” Sawyer had dealt with the fact that his boy next door looks caused people to think he was a pushover. The dimple in his right cheek certainly didn’t help dismiss his carefree appearance. But that was far from his true nature, and Brody’s sister was about to find that out. “You and I both know I can’t let you walk out of here without some sort of personal protection.”

“I’ve been on my own for a very long time, Sawyer. My days of requiring a babysitter are long gone.” Camryn was still testing how far she could push him, but even she had to see that she’d put him in an impossible situation. She was within two feet of those double doors when she turned back his way. “My fear momentarily got the best of me, because I’m not usually put into those kinds of positions. The reason I’m even here in New Orleans is because my agent thinks it’s time to put me out to pasture. It’s time for me to start doing sitcoms or hour-long dramas on television. Regardless, the date on that napkin is there for a specific reason. It wasn’t until I was in that MRI machine that I remembered the color of the man’s hair— dark brown. And his other basic features were different. Don’t think I didn’t call up Shepherd Moss’ picture on my phone to do a comparison. It wasn’t him. It was just my overactive imagination.”

The coiled pressure inside of Sawyer’s chest slightly gave way with relief that this situation wasn’t about to turn into a full-fledged shitstorm. The entire team— Townes Calvert, Keane Sanderson, Royce Haverton, Coen Flynn, not to mention Brody— would have descended upon New Orleans in an instant, as well as the U.S. Marshal Service and the feds had anyone actually believed for a second that Shepherd Moss was within these city limits.

New Orleans would be a serial killer’s wet dream of a hunting ground… fresh meat waving in front of the wolf as he cruised through the crowds of unknowing sheep.

Unfortunately, it didn’t erase the fact that Camryn believed she’d purposefully been shoved to the ground by someone… hard enough to warrant her a trip to the emergency trauma ward. He couldn’t just leave her here, and he wouldn’t have done so even if she hadn’t been a teammate’s sister.

“You still can’t go out the front entrance. That is, if you don’t want to start back where you left off at Latrobe’s,” Sawyer said, gesturing behind him to another exit sign that he was banking on leading them to the other side of the building where no one would catch sight of her leaving. How did she put up with this type of surveillance nonstop? “Someone is bound to take your picture and post it to their social media, so we’ll head out the back. We’ll then drive to the police station where you can make a formal report.”

“And have the headline in tomorrow’s newspaper read Actress assaulted by a stalker after a night of drinking?” Camryn asked, still not moving away from the double doors. She cocked one impeccably sculpted eyebrow that he’d only ever seen on models and actresses. “I don’t think that’s in my best interest. Sawyer, why do you think I contacted you of all people?”

“You can stop right there,” Sawyer warned her, not about to be drawn into a situation that would put him in the crossfire of both Brody’s wrath and his boss’s for not following through on his assignment, let alone the blood it would put in the water for his other teammates. “I’m working a high-profile case— meaning I left my assigned post— to come here because you were in trouble. You are Brody’s sister, and we take care of our own. That much I could get away with. I did not come here because I have nothing better to do than locate some random nut job who got carried away and subsequently tune him up in order for him to stay away from you.”

Camryn looked down at the ground, and for a moment Sawyer thought she was going to cry in response to his declaration. God help him if she did. He didn’t mean to sound as if her situation wasn’t important to him. As a matter of fact, her plight had become the first priority on his list… and that’s what angered him most. He shouldn’t feel this type of responsibility for her, and he chalked it up to the fact that she was Brody’s sister. Anyone in his situation would have this type of strong reaction, right? He involuntarily took a step forward as any man would have at seeing a woman in distress, but he was brought up short when she raised her dark gaze filled with… determination.

“I happen to know just how important the case is that you’re working on, but all I need to know is if I’m dealing with a fan who needs to learn boundaries or if I’m actually in trouble with a budding psycho killer. One day, Sawyer. I need this kept low profile for a number of reasons. Please. I’m asking for your help.”

Excerpt
The elevator chimed before either one of them could say anything else. Sawyer stepped aside after making sure the hall was empty and rested a hand on the left side of the elevator door, preventing it from closing before she crossed the threshold onto the blue and burgundy carpet. She wasn’t sure of the reason, but butterflies had set up camp in her stomach. She hadn’t experienced fluttering of this sort since her first audition for her breakout film.

“I’d like to take a look around your room, if you don’t mind,” Sawyer said as he watched her slide the card key into the slot. A green button lit up and announced her success in unlatching the lock.

“Of course. Please, come in.” Camryn quickly tried to recall how she’d left the room, but Sawyer had already slipped past her after closing the door behind them and stepped into the powder room on the right. He left the faint, heady fragrance of his cologne in his wake. It didn’t take him long to search the hotel suite, including checking the closets and adjoining doors to make sure they were properly secured. He left her once again wondering what she would say that could thank him for what he’d done last night and today at the police station. “I truly appreciate what—”

“Camryn, you don’t need to thank me.” Sawyer slowly reached up with both hands and gently removed his sunglasses until there was no barrier between them but space. His blue eyes searched hers for something she couldn’t put her finger on, but the quietness of his tone held an intimacy she’d been craving since they’d met at the airport. “You’re Brody’s sister. We look out for our own in our close-knit family.”

Heat had been making its way through her body when his words crashed over her like ice water. Why did everything have to come back around to her brother? Yes, that was their initial connection, but she didn’t want it to be the only thing that bonded them together. She instinctively reacted without thought, lifting herself up on her tiptoes and using his chest as leverage to keep her balance.

“I’m not just Brody’s sister, Sawyer. I’m also not yours,” Camryn whispered, right before she pressed her lips to his to prove her point.

Time stood still.

Camryn was pretty sure she actually heard the crackling of electricity in the air as she waited for him to decide how much further to take this moment. The answer came when his warm hands wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer. Her heart stuttered until he finally deepened their kiss.

His tongue stroked hers. Arousal slowly worked its way through her body, warming every inch of her that had been cold since last night. He tasted of coffee, mint, and something else that had her craving for more of the same.

Camryn arched farther into him when he used his right arm to wrap around her waist, bringing her even closer. She couldn’t help but let out a small whimper of pleasure when his left hand cupped the side of her face, tilting her head back so that he could nip her bottom lip before deepening their kiss once again.

The slight bite sent shivers up and down her spine. Before she could move her hands from his chest and around his neck, Sawyer abruptly pulled away… leaving Camryn craving more.

Chloe was nearly having to run to keep up with him. “Shane, slow down. I—”

He paused and backed her against the side of the security office trailer. The air left her lungs in a rush as his mouth slammed down on top of hers. There was no finesse in this kiss, just need and hunger. Chloe didn’t care, wasn’t interested in stopping it. She was already coming apart inside. When he pulled back they were both breathing hard.

“I’m going to need you to walk faster, peanut. Because if you don’t, the boys in the security room watching the CCTV feed are going to get much more of an eyeful than I think either of us want. Not to mention anyone walking by.”

Synopsis
From USA Today bestselling author Katie Reus comes the ALL NEW Redemption Harbor series where sparks fly and so do bullets…

She faked her own death…

Skye Arévalo left the CIA and faked her death to protect Colt Stuart, the only man she ever loved. Months later, a brutal kidnapping draws her to quietly infiltrate a dangerous cartel. Just when she thinks she’s home free, things go horribly wrong and she escapes with bloodthirsty enemies on her heels…only to find herself face to face with a bewildered and angry Colt.

He’ll cross every line to save her…

When Colt, a former Marine, finds out the woman he loved betrayed him, he’s shocked and hurt, but it doesn’t stop him from breaking every law on the books to keep her alive. Unfortunately, it might not be enough to stop a powerful enemy who will do anything to see the world burn and Skye dead.

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
Colt banged his fist against the door, fear and the smallest bit of hope punching through him. “Answer the fucking door,” he snarled. “Open, or I kick it in.”

Maybe you should take it down a notch.” Next to him, Brooks shoved an agitated hand through his hair, his Stetson held loosely at his side.

“And maybe you should be freaking out more.” One of their best friends had been holed up in his home for weeks, refusing to talk to anyone, to see anyone. Colt didn’t know exactly what his friend was going through, but he’d lost a lot of damn friends in the sandbox and the only woman he’d ever loved had died too. Something he couldn’t think about right now. He couldn’t focus on his own pain when he could help his friend, when he had a damn purpose.

Mercer had recently lost his wife, and the man wasn’t handling it. The guy had been in love with Mary Grace since he was fifteen. They’d been each other’s world. And two months ago she’d been killed in Mexico, a victim of cartel violence. Allegedly.

Colt hadn’t been in love with Skye since he was a kid, but eight months with her sure felt like a lifetime. Hell, when she died it felt like he’d lost part of himself. The only part that mattered. He had to force himself out of bed every day, to shove back the emptiness. So on one level, he understood how Mercer felt. He shoved that thought right back inside where it belonged and ignored it. He couldn’t fix his own problem, but he could help out Mercer.

anic swelled through Colt as the seconds ticked by without any response from inside—until he heard cursing on the other side of the door. Good. If his friend was cursing, he was alive. A solid minute later the lock snicked loudly as it twisted open.

Colt grabbed the handle and shoved it open, pushing past his best friend in case he tried to slam the door closed in his face.

Mercer, wearing boxers and nothing else, had grown a full black beard and his dark eyes were glassy. “What the hell are you doing here this early?”

“First, it’s two o’clock in the afternoon. Second…” Colt hauled off and punched him right in the nose. He needed to wake Mercer the hell up. Violence was pretty much the only way to do that now.

“Ah, hell,” Brooks muttered as Mercer flew back and fell on his ass with a grunt.

He held a hand to his nose, looking more alert than he had in two months as he glared up at Colt and Brooks. “What the hell, man?” His voice was muffled as he tried to stop the bleeding.

“I believe this is called an intervention,” Colt said, stepping into the foyer, cringing at the stench. “God, it smells like old pizza and cow crap in here. Mary Grace would kick your ass if she saw you living like this.”

“Don’t say her name!” Mercer shoved to his feet, letting his hand drop. Blood dripped down his face as he snarled at Colt. His teeth were toothpaste commercial white against his dark brown skin. Right now he looked like a rabid wolf baring his teeth at them.

“I’ll say her name if I want.” Yeah, he knew he was being harsh, but this was what Mercer needed. He needed to feel something, to wake the hell up. And making Mercer angry was the only way Colt knew how. Because the guy sure wasn’t going to talk about his fucking feelings. He needed to get out of this rabbit hole he’d let himself fall into. “We all lost her. Every single one of us.”

Most days Colt couldn’t believe she was gone. They’d all grown up together, and in his case, he’d been friends with Mary Grace since they were five years old. She was like a sister to Colt. Hell, he was still holding on to the hope that she wasn’t actually gone. It was why he was about to get on a plane in two hours and see if the tip he’d received was right. But first he had to make sure one of his best friends didn’t do something stupid while he was gone.

“Mary Grace.”

“Ah, hell,” Brooks said again, clearly not going to intervene. Just muttering his standard curse.

“Fuck you,” Mercer snapped, taking a step toward Colt.

That was it. Get angry, he silently willed his childhood friend. Mercer needed anger to replace the grief. God, or at least mute it. Just for a week. That was all Colt needed. Because if Mary Grace was alive, he was bringing her home to his best friend. He just couldn’t give Mercer the hope she was alive. Because if he did and it turned out she wasn’t… It would destroy him. “Mary. Grace.”

Mercer rushed at him like a bull.

Excerpt – Chapter 1
“You look like you could use some help.”

Camryn glanced up to find an attractive male around five years her junior standing before her. He had a beer glass in one hand and was holding up his other arm to grab the attention of the bartender. In seconds, another hand towel was tossed their way— this one damp with soda water. It didn’t take a genius to figure out from the man’s southern drawl, or the immediate attention he’d garnered from the staff, that he was a recognized face here.

“Thank you,” Camryn said, raising her voice so that he could hear her over the conversations around them.

She had her long, dark brown strands pulled back at the base of her neck. She’d purposefully chosen a pair of sunglasses that were too dark to wear casually, which was why she’d flipped them up onto her head earlier this evening.

Camryn used the sunglasses earlier to prevent people from recognizing her and hadn’t given it a second thought upon entering this establishment. She should have taken Aiden up on his offer to walk her back to her hotel, but she hadn’t caught sight of the man taking pictures until she’d started strolling down the infamous Bourbon Street.

“You look familiar.” The man had somehow magically exchanged his beer for a glass of soda water and was offering it to her so that she could dip the towel into the cleansing liquid. His curious gaze never left her face. “Do I know you from somewhere?”

“I don’t think we’ve met,” Camryn replied with a small smile to hide her convenient lie. She took the towel from his hand and quickly wiped the coarse material down her arms and chest. She was now wishing she’d worn a light jacket. “I wasn’t watching where I was going and bumped into someone with a fresh Hurricane, of all things. Needless to say, it spilled on both of us.”

“It sounds like you could use a drink yourself,” the man surmised, holding up his hand once more to signify to the bartender that he wanted another round of whatever he was having. “Bourbon Street tends to be a bit crowded during this time of night. It’s rare anyone goes home without a set of beads and in desperate need of a shower.”

“Speaking of home, I really should be moving along.” Camryn pressed a now clean hand against the back pocket of her jeans, confirming that her phone, identification, and credit card were still in place. She hadn’t wanted to carry a purse with so many people milling about. “I have an early business meeting.”

“Do you live in the Parish? Like I said, you look familiar. Maybe I’ve seen you around socially.”

“I’m from Illinois,” Camryn automatically replied, having learned long ago never to reveal the location of her current address to a stranger. Technically, this time she wasn’t actually lying. Her mother still resided in Chicago. “Thank you so much for the towel and soda water. I—”

Camryn had just tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear when she caught sight of a black camera— the same one she’d spotted leaving the last bar. Large hands were busy adjusting the lens as the man zoomed in on her, most likely modifying his focus due to the dim lighting between the front room and the side area where the bar was located. She forced herself to really examine the figure behind the camera, noticing right away he didn’t carry a bulging case like the typical paparazzi.

He also didn’t have any type of identification badge hanging around his neck like most of the press photographers, not that it was a prerequisite for independents. Something told her this man had nothing to do with any gossip rag or reputable magazine.

He was just shadowing her.

“Oh, shit,” the man exclaimed excitedly, having turned to see who had caught her interest. The camera must have triggered his memory. “You’re Camryn Novak! Guys, come over here! Camryn Novak is right here!”

This wasn’t the type of attention she was hoping for at the moment, but it was almost impossible for her to just up and leave now that a crowd began to form around her. The only benefit of her present situation was the fact that she was no longer visible to the man who’d once again tracked her down.

Who was he?

Granted, he might just be an obsessed fan who wanted to take her picture and was too shy to ask her to strike a pose, but that wasn’t what her intuition was telling her. He had an aggressive manner about him.

The next fifteen minutes inched by as she spent the time getting her photograph taken by the patrons and signing napkins for those who sought an autograph. Camryn was mystified why anyone would want a picture with her wearing a red-stained blouse, with her looking all windblown and just one hot mess.

Camryn still managed to paste a smile on her face, all the while doing her best not to panic at the thought of leaving here unaccompanied to walk to her hotel.

Where was he now?

He had to be nearby waiting for her to leave. Unfortunately, both exits were visible from the corner.

She could always call her brother’s friend. He would certainly deter any unwanted advances. He also just happened to be in town on business. She immediately discarded that thought after a single moment of reflection, refusing to let word get back to Brody that his baby sister couldn’t take care of herself while strolling down Bourbon Street on a typical November weekday evening.

Camryn had fought very hard to get this far in her life, and she wouldn’t ruin it now.

Another napkin was pushed in front of her, but she didn’t sign it right away. There was already writing imbedded into the rough material. She froze as the black ink finally penetrated, though the indentions made no sense to her at first.

Why were there a series of numbers written on a napkin?

Her name was also etched onto the white square, right above the date… a date that wouldn’t occur for another two weeks yet.

It was then that a cold realization settled over her unlike anything she had ever experienced.

She had to be mistaken. Maybe someone wanted to date her autograph and had just gotten the day of the month wrong. That was more plausible than the thoughts racing through her mind.

Brody Novak. Her brother— the same brother who was working for a privately contracted security agency. He and his team were currently searching for a notorious serial killer who had escaped from federal prison only a few months ago. Shepherd Moss had been the name of the bloodthirsty murderer, and he’d been convicted of killing eighteen women after torturing them for days on end, only to then carve the date of their death into their bodies while they were still breathing.

It was ludicrous to think that the same serial killer would target her of all people, just to get back at her brother, all because of who his employer was and what they were doing to hunt him down.

It was just a date written on a napkin.

It didn’t mean anything to anyone.

She should never have had that second drink she’d been offered. Her mind was starting to twist innocent facts. She was taking a relatively innocuous incident and making it into something it couldn’t possibly be.

Camryn scrunched the white cocktail napkin in the palm of her hand as she lifted her head and scanned the crowd. Her heart stuttered when her eyes landed on that same black lens, but she stood firm. She should have confronted this creep when she’d first spotted him.

There he was by the entrance of the wide-open foyer, the camera once again blocking the majority of his face.

Camryn couldn’t stop her brother’s voice from whispering all those casual warnings in her head repeatedly.

Shepherd Moss was a wanted man, listed on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list. His picture had been plastered across the national media endlessly. She tried to make herself see reason and not get herself caught up in the moment. There was absolutely no way he could be walking around New Orleans without someone spotting him. She struggled to recall his features, but the image of his face wouldn’t surface no matter how hard she tried.

She’d recognize him if she saw him, right?

She watched in somewhat disbelief as he released the camera with one hand, reaching his arm out to her and pointing his finger at the napkin still hanging from her fingertips.

It hadn’t been a mistake. The date written in black ink had been intentional. There was no doubt he was responsible for the odd notation in her hand.

Camryn had seen a lot in her line of business— one of them being what stalkers could do to mess with a fellow actress or actor’s mind. It went both ways. It was as if they had some kind of perverse relationship.

She had no idea if this man was Shepherd Moss or just some random guy who’d grown an unhealthy obsession over her, but she’d be damned if she would sit back and play the terrifying female role when she had a trove of adoring male fans around to utilize in her defense. There were too many witnesses for this man to do anything violent to her. After all, the best defense was a good offense.

Her brother had taught her to take the initiative.

Camryn didn’t waste time as she elbowed her way through the massive crowd, ignoring the calls for more autographs as she drew attention to herself. All eyes were on her, but her sole focus was on the man with the camera who’d been following her for at least thirty minutes, if not longer. She didn’t miss his startled reaction when he hastily took a step back away from her rushing figure. He spun on his worn brown loafers and only then lowered the camera as he tried to get past the patrons standing in the entryway.

She memorized every detail she could of his backside, all the way down to the generic set of khaki pants he was wearing with a brown belt to match his shoes. He was distancing himself quickly and she tried her best to catch up to him before he left the building, but it was futile.

The man had vanished by the time her wedge sandals hit the black and white checkered tile floor of the entrance.

Camryn scanned the crowd passing by just outside the double doors, even though she was aware her search was pointless. She still stepped outside into the cooling night air, hoping to catch some glimpse of him. It appeared she’d scared him off by taking the offensive, but the question remained… would he linger behind and wait for another glimpse of her? Would he be able to detect her amongst the crowd when it came time to leave? If the answer was yes, then she would need to be prepared. That did not include a call to her brother, who would only put her in some sort of protective custody, most likely deploying the entire New Orleans Police Department in the meantime.

She had another trump up her sleeve, and she was willing to use it if she could get a guarantee that word wouldn’t get back to Brody. Before placing that call, she needed to finish what she’d started inside the pub. She didn’t seek out publicity, but she was never rude to a fan once she was recognized.

The shove at her shoulder was so unexpected that she immediately lost her balance.

Camryn frantically flailed her arms to reach out to the nearest person, but her fingers couldn’t grab ahold of anything.

Air.

All she caught was air and though she tried to brace herself for the impact of the street, she was unsuccessful.

Camryn’s head hit the cement curb and then… nothing.

*

She was so beautiful… lying there on the sidewalk with her lashes resting on her flushed cheeks. Or was that from the neon red light from the crosswalk sign? It didn’t really matter. People still surrounded her if they really cared whether she lived or died. Had her gluttonous heart stopped beating, her memory would vanish within days. As usual, it didn’t take long before a few of these strangers recognized her.

It was sickening.

Why was she so special?

He wanted to take a picture of her lying there prostrate at his feet so he could recall this moment in time over and over as he prepared.

After all, this was the magical moment both of their lives had changed.

Excerpt
Noah wasn’t sure whether to be furious with Lucia, or thrilled that she was right. Either way, they needed to have it out. She made love to him not two hours ago, but when she’d looked at him and told him she loved him, she’d been lying to him.

She didn’t lie; she kept it to herself. Damn it. Keeping a secret like this was tantamount to lying. How the hell was he supposed to keep her safe, keep them all safe if she didn’t tell him the most pertinent information of all? As much as he wanted to justify it, he couldn’t deny the bitter tang of betrayal on his tongue.

He found her in the living room, cross-legged on the couch, wearing one of his shirts and a pair of his boxer shorts. She had the sleeves rolled up to reveal her slim forearms. Head bent over, she was going through a stack of fashion magazines labeling things and putting Post-its on them. Writing things like, “Pull,” “Check with Adriana if we have it,” “Can we partner with this designer?

She was working. Completely in her zone. Well, too bad for her; Noah was about to interrupt her. He marched over to the couch, and she looked up, giving him the sweetest smile he’d ever seen. So sweet it pulled at the places in his heart he’d swear didn’t exist anymore. She looked so perfect there, sunlight streaming into the living room and splashing over her, creating soft shadows and halos all over her. She looked like an angel.

“Hi. What’s up?” There was an invitation in her smile and, like the traitor it was, his dick swelled. He couldn’t seem to keep his mind or his hand off of her. They needed to talk, so the big guy downstairs would just have to wait.

“I was going to ask you the same thing. Is there anything you want to talk to me about?”

Her brows furrowed even as she continued smiling up at him. “No. I mean, unless when you say talk, you mean —” She lifted a brow and her eyes danced mischievously.

Okay, so he could totally understand how even the most hardened spies could fall for the enemy. Because, right about now, he wasn’t using the brain cells God gave him. He was using the other part of his brain. The one completely responsible for manning the sex train. The one that wanted to yank off her boxers and sink into her, right here in the middle of the living room, where anyone could walk in.

No. Stay strong. Besides, they’d done enough of that. After one too many close calls, the tracking devices he had everyone wear were now used to track where he and Lucia were, so the team could give them a wide berth.

Not exactly the use he had planned for them, but whatever. But they had enough privacy. And maybe if he just sank deep into her, he’d stop riding the razor’s edge and focus enough so he could ask her what he needed to ask her. If he slid the boxers off, spread her wide and stroked deep, they’d both feel better. They’d be relaxed enough to have this conversation. It was amazing the things he could come up with when he let his dick do the thinking.

He considered it. For a long moment, he considered it. She’d taste so sweet. Was she sore from earlier? Or, from this morning? He hadn’t exactly been gentle. But then again, neither had she. He still had her nail marks on his shoulders. Noah grinned with purely male satisfaction. He could still feel how those scratches had stung this morning in the shower when the water hit them.

Oh shit. He did not need to think about the shower, or what they did in there.

And he probably shouldn’t think about her taste because then he’d think about what they’d just done and—no. Never mind, there it was. In amazing Technicolor and surround sound in his mind. He cleared his throat.

No. They were having this conversation now. Because he was pretty damn certain that after they had this conversation, the last thing on his mind would be sex.

“Nope. Nothing to talk about.”

Her gaze searched his. And he saw pain there. He hated that he’d had a part in the pain there. Because he was pretty damn sure there was one thing she probably wanted to talk about but she didn’t trust him to be open-minded. That hurt more than anything else, that she couldn’t talk to him. Didn’t she understand that all he wanted was her safety and happiness?

Behind his back, Noah’s fingers tightened around the tablet he held. A tablet that held the image of a ghost he’d long since buried. A ghost that was back to haunt them all. The question was, what did he want?

Noah took the picture tablet from behind his back and slapped it on the table. “Explain.”

Lucia glanced at the picture and her breath caught. Her fingers flew to her lips then her gaze flickered to his. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Yesterday Matthias came into my office freaking the fuck out because Nelson came back as a false name. I lost years on my life in that split second when I was worried about you.”

“Noah, I can explain.”

He shook his head. “I was terrified that something happened to you. Terrified that once again I was too late. And then I called Ryan and everything was fine. So that was when I knew that either the false identity was laying groundwork for something crazier than we’re already dealing with or you were lying to me.”

“I didn’t lie to you, Noah.”

He crossed his arms. “Oh yeah? Then what do you call it exactly? Omission? You just happened to forget that you saw your brother in your fucking office yesterday?” He kneeled down so that their gazes were level. “Or, please tell me that you didn’t see him. Please fucking tell me that he came into your office but you didn’t see him. Tell me that. So that I don’t think that the woman I love lied to me.”

Excerpt
He leaned in to scrutinize his work. “Let me see.”

She turned toward him.

He pushed her hand out of the way. He poked. He prodded. He pressed. “I did Doctor Frankenstein proud. Maybe my stepmother was right. I should’ve been a real doctor. At least I wouldn’t have risked my veterinary license stitching you up.”

“I don’t—”

“I know. I know. You don’t like hospitals.”

“It’ll take more than a little thump to get me in one again.”

“Little thumps don’t require stitches. Little thumps don’t give you a concussion. And little thumps don’t get you almost killed.”

“Not this again.”

“Yes. This again.”

He raised his hands and took a step back. “Do me a favor.”

“What’s that?”

“The next time one of your clients waves a gun around, stay out of the way.”

“What in the purple hell did you expect me to do? Let her kill herself?”

“You should’ve gone for help.”

“Ms. Sims wasn’t trying to hurt me. Her dog, her baby, dropped dead. She was distraught, disturbed. If I hadn’t nosedived into the bench grabbing for the gun, I doubt I’d’ve had a scratch on me.” Audrey squeezed her head to keep it from exploding.

“You’re not Superwoman. Bullets won’t bounce off you.”

She didn’t have the energy for this. “Finished?”

“Not hardly.” Scott tilted his head and gave her that sexy half-smile. That devilish smile. That maddening smile the lucky few had followed to his bed.

It was too painful to think about, and not just because of her headache, so she pushed it from her mind. “Thanks for letting me crash at your place last night. And for stitching me up.”

She’d stuffed everything she owned into her truck and U-Haul trailer. That wasn’t saying much since the truck and trailer were small.

“Staying at a hotel by yourself with a concussion wasn’t and option. As for the other, I don’t know how you talked me into it. You’ll probably have a scar.”

“Not a problem as long as your malpractice is paid.”

A laugh rumbled his chest, but the smile quickly slid from his lips. “You should stay a day or two. Make sure you’re really okay.”

Audrey scooched back and propped herself up against the leather headboard. Her brain protested behind the fireworks and the nine-piece drumline. “I’ve only got thirty days to finish the repairs on my uncle’s house. I have to leave today. I’ll call you from the road, let you know I haven’t bled out into my head.”

“Not funny.” Scott frowned but kept her gaze. “I’m due at the animal hospital at seven. I’m going to miss having you around. Guess I can’t talk you into staying for good, huh?”

“What?” Her voice jumped two octaves. “Who’s the one who stood in my kitchen two weeks ago and told me I should go? ‘This is your last chance to make good on your promise to your uncle,’ you said. ‘Take a chance on your dream,’ you said. Don’t even—”

“Down, girl.” Scott eased her back into the pillows with a hand on her shoulder.

Thank God. Hells-bells clanged in her head.

“Forget I said anything. At least sleep for a few more hours and then head out. You don’t look so hot.”

No kidding.

He patted her leg and by the way he didn’t get up to leave, she knew he wanted to say more, but he wasn’t any better at goodbyes than she was. Then Scott braced his hands on either side of her head, and planted a quick kiss on her nose. Like an adult to a child.

It might have hurt less if he’d eviscerated her with a spork.

She was leaving Texas. This morning. For good.

She snagged his tie. “If that’s the best you can do, Romero, it’s no wonder your girlfriends leave you.”

Why had she baited him? He couldn’t refuse a challenge, any more than a dachshund could refuse table scraps.

Was her mind muddled from the concussion? Or was she finally thinking clearly? One kiss. That’s all she wanted.

Like a lover, not a friend. Stupid. He’d locked her in the friend-zone years ago.

Except for the night of her high school graduation.

And two weeks ago when he’d convinced her she should leave.

The look in his eyes was the same now as then. Want, need, hunger.

Hand over hand she pulled him down. His lips brushed hers. Her breath caught. She blamed the

concussion. Her hands trembled. She blamed the pain. Her heart hurt. She blamed herself.

She wrapped her arms around his neck, deepened the kiss, tasted the coffee on his tongue, smelled the subtle tang of surgical scrub that never quite left his skin. She tilted her head, and he nipped her lips, traced the line of her jaw and down to her pounding pulse at the base of her neck. She guided him on top of her, his weight braced on his arms, but she drew him down until his full weight pinned her.

She floated.

No fears, no worries, no will power.

No wondering if she should stop or if she could stop – because she didn’t want to stop.

The second standalone novel in the YA romantic suspense “Gavert City” series.

SEE ME, Try as they might…
SEE ME NOT, Tessa and Luke can’t escape their pasts.

Six years ago, Tessa Gardner’s sister, Mellie, disappeared. Despite lingering guilt and the never ending desire to find her, seventeen-year-old Tessa works hard to keep it together. Her grades are decent, and thanks to her part-time job, she can help pay her family’s bills. But when her childhood crush, seventeen-year-old Luke Simon, rolls back into her small Texan town, he threatens to topple the delicate balance she created. She’s drawn to him—and the way he makes her smile. He’s the only one who seems to understand her, but he’s got a dark past of his own. Even the fake psychics who swear Mellie is still alive tell Tessa that Luke will cause her pain.

Luke Simon knows a thing or two about guilt. He moved in with his uncle to escape his past, but memories threaten to eat him alive. He does what he can to keep his anger in check—quieting his thoughts by making out with one meaningless girl after the next. Tessa, and her long legs and her hard-earned smiles and her kindness is the only girl who’s ever mattered. She’s the one untainted memory he has from his childhood and he could talk to her for hours. He could do anything with her for hours. But the truth about his past might send her running. Or worse.

While Tessa and Luke try their hardest to live in the present, their pasts lurk in the shadows, more intertwined than they could imagine. When the bodies of the fake psychics are found, Tessa realizes that the truth about what happened to Mellie is right around the corner—and it may be too late to save her sister—and herself..

Synopsis
SCREAM meets FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS in this new young adult romantic suspense novel by Elodie Nowodazkij.

Fear is power. They fear me. They don’t fear me enough. Every year a girl disappears in Gavert County, Texas. Their bodies are found days, sometimes months, later with an angel wing carved on their face. They call me “the Angel Killer” and I’m on the hunt again. But this time, it’s personal.

Seventeen-year-old cheerleader Erin Hortz has been warned about the Angel Killer all her life. She never walks alone in the dark. She doesn’t talk to strangers. She doesn’t accept drinks at parties. All she wants is to finish her senior year with a win at the Miss Junior Queen of Hearts pageant, capture the perfect light over the lake with her new camera, and finally catch the attention of her best friend Nadia’s brother—former football star Dimitri Kuklev. Since his injury, they’ve been spending a lot of time together. And getting to know the real Dimitri—not the one she put on a pedestal in her diary is better than she could ever have imagined. And she’s falling hard.

Nineteen-year-old Dimitri’s injury brought him from football superstar with universities from all around the country knocking at his door to not knowing what he wants to do with his life. Taking classes at the local community college is supposed to get him back on track, but all he wants is to be on the field again. The only person who seems to understand him is the one he swore to keep in the friend zone: Erin. His sister Nadia’s best friend and the reason why he can’t keep a girlfriend. Between their early morning jogs, their time spent at the lake laughing, and their late night conversations, he’s having a hard time remembering why it’s such a bad idea.

But when Nadia doesn’t come home after a party, Dimitri and Erin know they must find her before it’s too late—even if that means risking their own lives and everything Erin’s ever known.

Because the main suspect is Erin’s father.

Excerpt #2
“How did you end up here tonight?”

“You were at my bar earlier. I noticed you from the security footage, but by the time I made my way down to say hello you were gone. I tried the diner on a whim, and they said a woman matching your description had in fact been dining there just moments ago. They said you all took off looking frightened so I was curious. I had a guy ping your phone location, and ta-da.”

Ava’s mouth was hanging open by the time he finished his story. There was so much that she wanted to ask, but she just stood there in a stupor instead.

“Why do you own a bar?”

“Because I can, Ava. Calvin, please place Ms. Thorne’s things in my car downstairs.” Brian never took his eyes off of Ava while he spoke to Calvin. Ava fumed with how rude he was being to everybody.

“Brian, this makes absolutely zero sense. I’m just going to go home with Tayler. I’ll be safe there, and I won’t have to impose on you.”

“Ava, you’re pushing my patience. You’re coming with me.”

“Will I lose my job if I don’t go with you?” The muscle in his jaw clenched which she should have found a bit scary, but she just found it sexy. Which then infuriated her even more because she was supposed to be pissed as hell at him, not ogling him. She crossed her arms and waited for his answer.

“No, but you’ll damn well earn a spanking. Now get in the damn car Ava!”

Synopsis
I washed ashore in a little lake town.

A place where everyone knows everyone, yet…

No one knows me.

I don’t know me.

If a woman doesn’t know her own name, does she really exist? I don’t know my natural hair color, my birthdate, or where I live. I am invisible. To everyone, to everything, even to myself.

Except to him.

I see the recognition deep in his stare, the way it lingers on my face as if I’m a puzzle he’s desperate to put together. I just want answers, the truth… knowledge. His lips are sealed. Still, his eyes beguile me. I can’t trust anyone, not even myself. Someone wants me dead, the same someone who tried to bury me in a watery grave. They’ll come for me again… I won’t know their face.

I don’t even know mine.

I am amnesia.

Excerpt
Slivers of light pricked my eyelids, which up until this moment seemed far too heavy to lift. As I lay against something soft at my back, thought and awareness barely registered.

The gritty feeling as I struggled to raise my eyelids scraped and burned over my eyeballs as if warning me it wasn’t a good idea. Swallowing past the sandpaper in my throat, I stopped working and lay still. Cognizance slowly came forward in the form of something weighing me down and the echo of footsteps nearby.

Adrenaline jackknifed through me, and my body arched upward with the force of my gasp. The weight of whatever held me caused severe panic to fill me, and I began to fight against it.

“No!” I screamed, flailing about, trying to escape the binds. “Let me go!”

High-pitched beeping filled my ears, and the footsteps I’d heard grew more insistent and much closer.

He was coming!

“No!” I screamed.

Strong hands grabbed my arms and pinned me down. I tried to fight back, but they were much stronger than me. Kicking my legs, I tried to free them, but even more weight came down, holding them still until I was gasping for breath and ready to beg.

“Please!” I pleaded as wetness coated my cheeks. It made me realize the grittiness under my lids was rinsed away, and my eyes sprang open.

A man was leaning over me. He had graying hair and wore some kind of white shirt. The scream that ripped right out of me scared us both.

More hands and voices came out of nowhere, and I thrashed around again.

“Miss!” the man yelled. “Miss, calm down.”

“Get away from me!” I screamed again.

“Miss!” another voice yelled, a woman this time. Turning in her direction, I saw a pair of kind brown eyes staring at me. “We aren’t trying to hurt you.”

I calmed some, but the thundering of my heart made me feel as if I might spiral out of control. “You aren’t?”

“No.” The woman, who was also dressed in white, spoke. “You’re at a hospital. You were in an accident.”

“W-what?” I stammered, collapsing back against the bed, no longer straining against the binds.

“You’re at a hospital.”

“You’re trying to hold me down!” I accused.

“We don’t want you to hurt yourself.” the woman explained. The hands, even the man’s, remained.

“I don’t like it,” I admitted, recoiling.

The man straightened, stepping back. The nurse was slower to withdraw, but she did so after a few seconds.

“My legs,” I rasped. Suddenly, my throat hurt.

“It’s just the blankets.”

A quick glance down proved I was covered with blankets. Between suspicious glances at the people crowding my room (there were four), I gazed around, concluding I was in fact in a hospital.

“I don’t understand,” I admitted, all my weight pressing into the bed.

“It’s okay,” the man replied. He was a doctor, with a name badge and a stethoscope. “It’s completely normal and expected to be confused after the ordeal you’ve been through.”

“What ordeal?” I asked instantly, anxiety pressing in on my ribcage.

“We were hoping you could tell us,” the doctor said.

“What?” My brows furrowed.

The nurse leaned close, over the side of the bed. I noticed the railings were pulled up on each side. It made me feel as if I were in jail. Instantly, I hated it and began shoving at the bars, trying to push them down.

“Okay, hang on,” the nurse said and put the rails down. Once it was done, she pinned me with an insistent stare. “You have to stay still. You can’t thrash around. You’ll rip out your IV and reinjure yourself.”

“What happened to me?” I asked for what felt like the fifteenth time. I looked around at the four people in the room, hoping one of them would just spit it out.

The doctor motioned to two of the nurses and then quietly left the room.

I glanced back at the nurse. “Can you tell us your name?” she asked.

“My name?” I nodded once, then opened my mouth… only nothing came out.

Anxiety spiked in me again; I started to become agitated. “I… don’t know.”

“Calm down.” The nurse reminded me.

How dare she tell me to calm down? I couldn’t even remember my name.

Oh my God, I didn’t know my own name!

“I don’t remember!” I gasped, jerking up into a sitting position. “Why can’t I remember?”

Before I could fling the covers off and jump out of bed, the doctor was there, pinning me back down. “If you don’t calm down, we’ll have to sedate you. I don’t want to do that. You’ve been out long enough.”

I stilled. “How long?”

“A while.” The nurse hedged.

I ignored her. She was terrible with questions. “How long?” I demanded.

“A little over two months,” the doctor replied.

I gasped. “What’s my name?” I yelled.

I’d been here for two months and they were asking for my name? Shouldn’t they know it?

The doctor wasn’t looking at me; he was looking at the nurse, giving her a curt nod. She rushed out of the room.

“No!” I shouted. “No drugs! Please! Tell me my name. I just want to know my name.”

“You need to calm down. You’ve had a great deal of trauma, miss.”

I dropped back against the pillow, boneless. He called me miss. “You don’t know my name, do you?” I asked, meek.

Sensing all my energy was drained away, he moved back. A frown pulled at his lips. “You were brought in with no identification.” He began.

Fear unlike anything I’d ever felt wrapped around my heart and squeezed. I searched every corner of my mind for something. Anything.

There was nothing.

“I don’t remember…” I whispered.

The doctor seemed to soften. “I know this must be very scary, to wake up and be so disoriented.”

I laughed, but it wasn’t a humorous sound. I wished I were disoriented right then.

“You’ve been through a lot. Give it a few days. Now that you’re awake, your mind will catch up and you will remember.”

“I will?” I asked.

“There’s a good chance.”

Disappointment speared me. “If I don’t?”

“Let’s take it one day at a time.” He placated me.

“Easy for you to say. You know your name.”

A ghost of a smile appeared on his face. “Time.” He reminded me.

The nurse came through the door, holding a syringe, and I cringed away.

“I don’t think we’re going to need that,” the doctor told her.

I let out an audible sigh.

He glanced around again. “Now that you’re awake, I’ll get you down for testing.”

“What kind of testing?” I asked.

“Routine stuff for someone who’s been in a coma.”

Nothing about this was routine. I was in coma… for two months. And I didn’t even know my name.

When both the nurse and doctor were gone and I was alone, my eyes overflowed with tears and a formidable feeling of dread crowded inside me. The doctor said there was “a good chance” I would remember my name very soon.

The problem was it wasn’t just my name I needed to remember…

It was everything.
