Excerpt #2
“I can’t accept this.” Anxious now, I yanked my phone from my pocket and pulled up the article I’d found in Tom’s email. “Look, here’s an article on two of the missing kids. You can’t tell me that’s not real.”

I shoved the screen in Captain Randall’s face.

The Captain’s eyes narrowed, eyebrows furrowing in concentration as he read the article. And then he shook his head. “I don’t know where you got this article, but your information is wrong. I’ve never even heard of those two boys.”

“This article is from the Boston Herald,” I said, though my determination was starting to waver. “Are you saying it’s a lie?”

“I’m saying that I’ve never heard of those boys, and that Tom wasn’t working on a kidnapping case with me.” Captain Randall’s voice was firm. “Look, Chandler, I know you’re upset that he’s gone, but there’s nothing more to do than move on. If you’re not going to do your job, the door’s there. Otherwise, take your gun, badge, and paperwork and get out of my office before I change my mind about letting you stay here.”

“I—” I clamped my lips together, choosing my words carefully before the Captain really did give me the boot. “Sir, I would appreciate it if I could at least take a look at the file regarding Tom’s case. I just don’t believe that he died in a fire.”

“Not a chance.” The Captain glared at me. “I don’t allow my detectives to work on the cases of family and friends, and as a new hire, you’re definitely no exception.”

“I understand, but—”

“The case is closed, and it’s staying that way. Now, if you want to keep your job, I suggest you put your attention towards solving open cases instead of ones that don’t need attention. Have I made myself clear?”

“Crystal,” I bit out.

He turned back to his computer. “Good. You’re dismissed.”

I gnashed my teeth against the protest bubbling up in my throat, knowing that if he turned back to look at me again, it would be the last time he ever did. So instead of pushing the matter, I grabbed my badge, gun, and folder, then headed out into the bullpen to grab a seat and fill out this damned paperwork.

The sooner I did that, the sooner I could figure out why Captain Randall was lying to me, and what really happened to my fiancé and those missing kids.

Title: Daemoneum
Series: The Primordial Principles #2
Author: Laney McMann
Release Date: June 16, 2016
Genre: Young Adult Urban Fantasy/Romance

Synopsis
Boulder, Colorado is too quiet, and no one needs to remind Cole Spires how unnatural that is.

In the aftermath of Dracon’s death, the Daemoneum have gone into hiding. Every known Hive has been shut down and evacuated, and for the first time in Cole’s memory, the Brotherhood, Kinship, and all common houses across the country and abroad are considering  lockdown. Leygates are being systematically closed around the world, and the Primordial are waiting …

In the bunker underneath the Brotherhood, Kade Sparrow is as safe as she can possibly be, or that’s the idea, but no one can explain how her Astrum necklace found its way into her bedroom. There were no footprints, no traces of breaking and entering, no evidence of any kind that someone had infiltrated the Brotherhood common house. Yet the necklace still sat on her night stand, wound in a perfect circle of gold, the tiny star glinting on its chain. And the only person who could have put it there … is dead.

In the second installment of The Primordial Principles, strange occurrences are happening across the globe. Relationships will be tested, old players will become new, foes will turn into allies, and an unlikely adversary will force Cole and Kade to go on the run.

As the fallen rise, the Primordial must unite as one. Or all could be lost.

—————————————————————————

Excerpt
“Promise me something?” Cole whispered against her mouth, his hand gripping hers tighter.

“Anything.”

“Don’t let go.” His free hand whipped to the side, and a geyser of pure red energy erupted from the ground at their feet. The sound rushed in Kade’s ears like hurricane force winds, and her free arm immediately went around Cole’s waist, holding his body tight against hers. “Close your eyes.”

She did, and he kissed her again, hard. His warm lips parted her own, his tongue found hers, and Kade yielded to him completely, their bodies molding together. The swirling gush of energy consumed them in a spinning crackle of deafening electricity.

Kade’s body lifted from the ground, and spun, pressed against Cole’s, and he never stopped kissing her, only pulled her closer, tighter, as they disappeared from the field, from Colorado, from everything she knew.

Synopsis
Kadence Sparrow wasn’t born a devil’s child-she was turned into one. Now, she’s hiding from the truth, and running for her life.

For years, Kade’s true nature has lurked behind an illusion, so when her dad gets another job transfer, she knows the drill: no close friends, no boyfriends, and most importantly: don’t expose what she is. Ever. Keeping secrets is easy. Lies are second nature. So is the loneliness-and the fear, but when the Shadows attack, and Kade meets Cole Spires, she could expose everything she’s trying to hide.

As one of the Celestial Children, Cole lives by an oath: defend the Ward, protect the Primordial race, guard the gateways, and stick to his own. Everything else is a distraction, and besides, he’s lost enough. Cole’s job is clear, and no one his age does it better. So, when he meets Kade in a club downtown, he assumes she just wants his attention. Most girls do, but Cole soon realizes … Kade isn’t like most girls.

The children of heaven and hell are living among us, fighting an age-old war. And falling for someone from the opposition is not an option. But a chance encounter between Kade and Cole will blur the rules, as Kade’s journey to keep her truth hidden catapults them together and into a web of lies, forcing her to not only face the demon inside her, but to answer the hardest question of all.

Synopsis
What has he done?

What’s happening to him?

And what on Earth is that smell?

For Colin Strauss, puberty stinks. Blackouts, hallucinations, and lapses in memory are the perils of growing up werewolf.

Worse than that, Colin worries he might have had something to do with the recent attacks on the townspeople. He may have eaten a person. It doesn’t matter that it’s someone he doesn’t particularly like. What kind of boy goes around eating people?

Foolishly, all Colin can think about is how Becca Emerson finally kissed him for the first time. Yep, hormones are afoot. Yikes!

But girls will have to wait. Collin better get himself under control before someone else ends up hurt or worse . . . dead.

—————————————————————–

Excerpt #1
First, a word of warning …

I don’t want to get too scientific here, but there are a few things you should know before you sink your teeth into this book. I’ve tried to keep it simple enough that anyone twelve and up could read and understand it. Werewolves were everywhere in Europe in the late sixteenth century. Go to a party, there would be a werewolf. Go to work, you’re probably working next to a werewolf. Bump into a stranger on the street—werewolf!

They were slowly killed off in Europe as the true nature of a werewolf is a terribly hard thing to control. Eventually you get that urge to eat someone. And let’s face it; eating people is just rude.

Now here’s the scary bit, the bit that concerns you. While werewolves ceased to be a part of the world, they didn’t necessarily leave it. On the contrary, humans evolved to repress the werewolf gene out of the fear they would be decapitated, shot with a silver bullet, burned alive, or a terrifying combination of all three. What this means is that every single human being is still carrying the werewolf gene. You, right now, sitting right where you are, has the werewolf gene swimming around somewhere inside of you.

Genes are strings of DNA. DNA makes you who you are. You have that werewolf gene inside you. It’s just not active. Not yet.

To fully activate that werewolf gene, you’d have to be bitten by another werewolf, someone who turns into a giant wolf-like creature when there’s a full moon. So fear not! As long as no one has bitten you recently, you’re likely okay.

So why this warning? You’re probably thinking there’s no chance I’ll turn into a werewolf because I haven’t been bitten. That is absolutely true. However, while it’s impossible to turn into a werewolf unless you’re bitten, it is very possible to awaken that sleeping werewolf gene by learning too much about them. This book will teach you a lot about those hairy creatures of the night, so I want you to be extra careful while reading it.

If you notice any of the following things, stop reading immediately:

– You find yourself looking at other humans and thinking lunch.
– You start to notice smells you never smelled before.
– You growl at people instead of talking to them.
– Your nails begin to grow at an alarming rate.
– You scratch your head in public using your leg.
– You greet your friends at the bus stop by sniffing their butts.
– You begin to grow hair in all the wrong places.

You’ve been warned.

They get angels wrong too, telling tales to children to explain away the loss of a loved one. Spreading false hope that loved ones spread wings and become the watchful guardians and protectors of those they leave behind. We angels have never been human, nor will we ever be.

I am a warrior, a true weapon of God. My name is Belleeza. Mostly everyone knows me as The Terrible Beauty, a nickname I did not give myself. Both angels and demons know me to be a ruthless, vindictive, cold-hearted killing machine–A blood lusting, pain giving, death-loving assassin of God. Is it true?–Well not entirely. Although I don’t try spread the word otherwise. I desire to be a loner. People and angels alike tend to steer away from that which they fear and that suits me just fine. The truth is…I’m just good at what I do.

Excerpt
“I want to go to my room now,” said Kyle who turned abruptly toward his room.

Declan and Joe were startled from Kyle’s response. “I think Kyle is tired, Andy; we’re going to go get him settled in,” Declan quickly responded. Andy wasn’t Declan’s favorite in terms of volunteer coordinators, however, he was offended when people were rude to the pastor. Since Declan was a kid he’d known Andy, and he could testify to how the volunteers had helped the patients recover. Whether it was truly the grace of God or not, Declan could not deny the patients’ progress.

“Well, I’ll be seeing you later, dude. Hope you get up to snuff soon,” said Andy, as he turned and said a quick prayer for the room he was about to leave. Declan and Joe were walking into Kyle’s room to get him settled as Andy placed his hand on Kyle’s door. His next stop was Kyle’s room, and he started saying a silent prayer for Kyle.

Just then, Kyle violently turned toward the pastor and yelled, “Leave me alone!” The voice that came from Kyle sounded so foreign and so utterly wrong that it sent shivers down Declan’s spine.

Kyle ran toward the pastor, and Joe caught him by the arm to try to stop him. With inexplicable strength, Kyle took hold of Joe and threw him at Andy by using one arm. Joe collided with Andy and fell. Declan instinctively jumped onto Kyle’s back, snaking his hands underneath Kyle’s arms to restrain him, before he could do any more harm to Joe and Andy. As his hand made contact with Kyle’s skin, he felt an overwhelming gloom that seemed to destroy all that was sunny and happy. All the feelings of dread and misery that Declan had ever felt in his life surged out from all the repressed corners of his mind. He felt that he would prefer to be dead rather than to live the rest of his life. As the sense of coldness spread across Declan’s body, he felt almost frozen.

Kyle started to spin to try to throw Declan off, and it jogged Declan out of his gloom. He tried to use his weight to pin Kyle down, but Kyle was much stronger than he appeared. He stood as if there was a mere child on his back. Kyle started spinning faster, but Declan held on tight.

“Help, guys, help!  What are you waiting for?” shouted Declan as he clenched his legs tighter around Kyle’s abdomen. He kept his eyes closed because he felt that if he opened them, he’d be sick all over the linoleum floor from all the spinning Kyle was doing.

Joe ran into the room with a sedative shot he’d pulled out of the locked medical cabinet outside the room. He leaped onto both Declan and Kyle to add the extra weight to help pin Kyle down, but immediately, he was flung off, and he fell hitting his shin on the bed table.  “Ahhh!” he screamed.

Declan managed a shout to Joe. “Throw it to me!”

Joe carefully tossed the sedative to Declan. It arched toward the ceiling and Declan held one firm grip on Kyle’s arm while he held up his other hand.  He caught the shot and grabbed it tightly.  “Got it!”

He looked at the tranquilizer in amazement, almost proud that he had caught it despite the chaos and shouting.  But his conquest was short-lived; Declan hesitated a fraction of a second too long. Using his newly freed hand, Kyle grabbed Declan off his back and with a loud grunt placed Declan into a tight chokehold in front of him. Declan started to make gagging noises and his eyes widened with terror when he realized that Kyle’s free hand was inching toward his neck. He struggled but Kyle was too strong. When the injection went into his neck, he screamed.

Immediately, darkness crept into Declan’s vision and threatened to overwhelm him as deoxygenated blood flowed through his brain. Luckily, the sedative worked quickly.

Just before Declan lost consciousness, Kyle’s arms fell limp and collapsed, letting go of Declan.

Excerpt #3
The old woman stops chanting and begins the ritual. “When you pass through the smoke, you will inhale the spirit of your ancestors, and you will inherit the gift that was bestowed upon us by our mother, Gaia. When you step into the moonlight, you will become one with nature and a child of the moon. Gaia gave us the ability to choose the life we want to live. Choose the form that will give life to your pack, your family, your soul. Come forth and be blessed.”

This is my destiny. My life. My choice. I chant the words in my head as I edge towards the canopy. I don’t see the first few phase, but I hear howling echo from the trees. When I’m fifth in line, I see Clio pass through the smoke. She walks swiftly down the path side by side with Tripp. It happens so quickly; I don’t even think Clio feels it. One moment she is walking on two legs, and a split second later, she’s running on four in the moonlight. Tripp is hot on her tail.

When it’s my turn, I look to see who is standing beside me and find Dillan staring back. I wonder if he’s been there all along. Why didn’t I notice him? He smiles, and my stomach burns with desire. I’m so focused on Dillan I don’t remember passing through the smoke. I don’t realize what I’m doing until I see moonlight splayed across the dirt in front of me. I feel Dillan’s eyes on me; he’s waiting for me to go first. I’m stuck, I can’t move. I don’t want to be claimed by nature. I don’t want to be claimed by anything or anyone. I think about Gaia. She turned a pack of wolves into humans to save her from loneliness. We are a species born from one woman’s desire for companionship. You can call it a gift, but it can also be seen as a curse. The wolves had no choice, I do. I lift my foot to step into the light, but instead I step back. I hear Cassie gasp behind me. A voice in my head is chanting. Go. Go. Only I don’t know which direction it wants me to move in. I start to turn around when I feel his hand grip mine.

“We’ll do it together,” Dillan says. We lock eyes, and he gently pulls me forward. We stand at the edge of the canopy. Our past behind us, our future before us, hand in hand. We’ll do it together. His words echo in my head. He is the one. He will be my partner. We’ll do it together.

Synopsis
THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly’s new crossover fantasy novel.

Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive – and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.

It’s 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city’s magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters’ crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer’s shine.

Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC’s most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family’s home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.

Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic – and when their paths cross at the Shaws’ performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.

A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties..

Interview with Lee Kelly
1. What do you think is your lead character’s best trait?
I’d say Alex’s best trait is his ability to read people – he ends up being very good at undercover work because of his sensitivity to human interactions, emotions and experiences.  And Joan’s best trait is her relentless commitment and determination – to her family at the outset, and eventually, to her work within the Shaw Gang.  Ironically I guess both Joan’s and Alex’s “best traits” can also be “worst traits” given the context.

2. Are there any characters in your book based on a real person?
Not directly, I guess – though Harrison Gunn is actually named after my friend and old co-worker, who insisted that I name a character after him in this novel (so take the bad guy Harrison )!  Most of the characters in the book are my own creations or some kind of combination of multiple people: like Alex is sort of a combination of me and my husband, while Joan is a combination of me and my sister.

3. What’s something your readers would be surprised to know about you?
I’m strangely superstitious, or at least I used to be.  I’ve stopped most of these superstitious “rituals,” but I used to have to turn the lights off three times before leaving my apartment or I’d think I’d have a bad day, or I’d have to wear a certain pair of earrings to an interview.

4. Where is your favorite place to write?
The place I always write is the office off my bedroom, so I guess that’s my default answer.  But I really enjoy writing on the second floor of my town library, Millburn Library, because of the views of the woods – and I love those moments when I’m away from my everyday life and actually get in some writing time… like my parents’ kitchen table during the holidays before anyone gets up, or on vacation while my husband and kids sleep in.  It feels like I’m sneaking out on a date with my characters.

5. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A writer – though the answer briefly changed to archeologist after I watched the Indiana Jones trilogy.

6. What is your favorite book of all time?
I’d have to say The Phantom Tollbooth.  I think the books you read as a child have a way of staying with you.

7. Describe your writing style in three words.
Character-driven, otherworldly thrillers.

8. What is your writing process?
It’s evolved, for sure.  Before City of Savages, I had a really hard time finishing anything: I was a perfectionist, and needed each chapter to read complete and final before I moved on to the next.  But sadly, after the first twenty pages of a manuscript, I’d clam up and start worrying that I’d make a mistake.

Eventually, I realized that the only way to overcome the fear of imperfection was just to submit to it: my first drafts were going to be messy.  So now I write “with a spit and a polish.”  I’ll initially draft a passage or a chapter really quick and messy – sometimes with just sketches of ideas – and then the next day, I usually polish the previous day’s installment so it’s a little more readable.  But after that quick one-two, I move forward with the story without any more second-guessing.

After I’ve completed a first draft, I step away from it completely for a couple weeks.  When I begin the second draft, I let that “perfectionist” sit down at the computer.  Draft two is more like rewriting than revising, but that’s okay, as writing is less scary when I have 85,000 or so words under my belt (even if they’re the wrong words).  My third draft involves input from beta readers and critique partners, followed by another fairly full-scale revision.

Synopsis
After sixteen years on the run, Bay-Lee joins her emotionally distant father at his New Zealand school. On her first night there, he dumps her on the doorstep and walks away. Big surprise. Minutes later, a bag is thrown over her head, and she’s kidnapped for Orientation. The hunter in charge calls her Bait. According to him, that’s all she’s good for, to be used to draw out monsters for experienced hunters to kill.

Before Bay-Lee can move up to the rank of Hunter, she will have to prove herself, battle wraiths, a reaper in disguise, and a stampeding border monster. With the addition of her classes, she’s going to be way too busy for a social life. Falling in love is not on the agenda.

Then, she meets Nick Gallos. With the intimidating rank of Warrior, Nick is gorgeous, arrogant, and just plain rude to her. It’s obvious from their first meeting that Nick is hiding a dark past overflowing with secrets, and her father is right smack in the middle of it. Nick seems to be using her to get even with her father, and she won’t tolerate that. What a jerk.

So, why can’t she stop thinking about him?

Excerpt #3
“Rock star Tyler Beck is dead at the age of twenty,” the news anchor said, unable to keep a drop of excitement from her voice.  “A nationwide manhunt for Bad-Rock’s front-man ended in tragedy earlier this evening when Beck lost control of his vehicle during a high speed police chase.  Band members could not be reached for comment.  Their publicist has issued the following statement.”

Bay-Lee frowned in her sleep.  Horrible images infiltrated her mind, twisted metal and a body burned beyond recognition.  The frown deepened.  She had fallen asleep with the television on again.  It was the only logical reason for the intrusion of a loud female voice.  Her hand slapped around the mattress, blindly searching for the remote in the fervent hope she wouldn’t have to open her eyes.

The news anchor read the statement.

“Tyler’s family and close friends request privacy and understanding in this difficult time as they grieve for a talented life cut too short.  Although Tyler was accused of a horrendous crime earlier this week, we are confident his name will be cleared.  In the meantime, we ask that…”

Giving in to the inevitable, Bay-Lee parted her eyelids in a painful squint.  Light from the television nearly blinded her.  Her head snapped around so she was facing the darkened side of her room.  The remote was on the nightstand next to the alarm clock.  Grabbing it, she switched the set off.

Cool darkness settled over her bedroom, bringing instant relief.  She closed her eyes again and breathed easier.  Silence gave her a much needed break.  Her uncle must have gone to bed.

The news anchor’s words took a second trip through her mind.

They had been talking about Tyler Beck on the late night news.  That’s why she’d been dreaming about him.  Mystery solved.  There wasn’t anything wrong with her that couldn’t be fixed by turning off the TV before going to bed.

For an entire week his face had haunted her.  A person couldn’t turn on a television or pick up a magazine without seeing his image.  Following a Sold Out concert last Friday night he had gone to a party thrown in his honor, and he’d massacred sixteen of his biggest fans.  What sort of person murdered their own fans?

According to police there was enough evidence to convict.  There was a video on the Internet that had gone viral—five million hits in one day.  It was shot by a teen outside the club and clearly showed Tyler exiting the party before police surrounded him.

The rock star had been running from the law ever since.

She sighed, a hundred percent awake now.  Frustrated, she kicked at the sheet and struggled to get comfortable after repeatedly punching her pillow.  Stupid Tyler Beck.  She was sick of hearing his name, and now the jerk was apparently going to ruin a good night’s sleep with his sudden demise.  Ridiculous.  Before this week she hadn’t even noticed he was alive, and now she couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Up in Flames Teaser 1

——————————————————————

Excerpt

Logan
I’m an idiot for thinking the dagger would be safe here. It drew the bastards right to my doorstep. Now I have to protect Cara without the weapon I need to do it. Though I doubt they got the safe open, if they even found it in Dad’s office, it’s not like I’m going to have a clear path to it either.

“Stay here,” I whisper to Cara.

She shakes her head. Of course she’s not going to listen. Right now she’s the only one with a weapon— her firepower.

“Then at least stay behind me.”

She holds her palm face up and a flame forms, growing into a ball of fire. I can’t help feeling a little emasculated right now. I push the door enough to see inside. The place is a mess. The couch cushions are on the floor, the end table is turned over, and the picture frames are off the walls. Definitely the work of Hunters.

I can’t hear anything inside, which hopefully means they have moved on. Would they if they didn’t find what they were looking for though? I nod to Cara and take a step inside. She matches my step, keeping her fireball at the ready. Damn, I wish I had a useful power like that. No guy wants his girlfriend to have to protect him. Some Guardian I’m turning out to be.

Panic washes over Cara’s face and she tugs on my arm. “Linette,” she mouths.

Shit! What if Linette was here when this happened? If she was attacked again because of me…I move toward the kitchen. Linette was going food shopping. If she was back before this happened, then the fridge would be stocked. I’m tiptoeing, being careful not to make a sound. I reach the refrigerator and pull the door open. There’s food on every shelf. Damn it! I close the door and look at Cara, who is bright red and ready to burn the place down.

I motion toward Dad’s office, needing to see if the dagger is still locked in the safe or if we have a missing dagger and a missing Phoenix on our hands. The office door is kicked in, which doesn’t surprise me since I know Dad keeps it locked at all times. Totally ineffective against me since I can pick locks, and it’s apparently useless against blunt force too. The desk is torn apart with the drawers open and papers everywhere. Dad’s computer is tipped over in the garbage can. Even the throw rug is in a ball in the corner. They didn’t leave anything untouched. I walk over to the mini fridge and flip it upside down.

“What are you doing?” Cara whispers. “Who cares if the fridge still works? Let’s get the dagger and get out of here. Those guys might still be upstairs.”

I pull the false bottom off the fridge and reveal a panel with several small holes inside a square. I press the button next to the square and say, “Heather Schmidt.” As soon as Cara hears Mom’s name, her face falls and the fire in her palm extinguishes. Maybe it’s the way I said it, or maybe she knows me well enough to figure it out.

The panel clicks open and I reach inside the safe for the dagger. Clutching it tightly, I feel its power flow through me. I motion for Cara to back away from me, but she doesn’t move. Why won’t she listen to me about this? It’s so frustrating. All my focus is on controlling the dagger before it controls me. I step around Cara, being careful not to get too close, and exit the office. She is back in stealthy Phoenix mode, her fireball ready once again.

I know we should get out of here, but something tells me I should search the other rooms, make sure Linette isn’t a pile of ashes on any of the floors. But that means I have to bring Cara with me. I head to my room, thinking maybe the Hunters followed my scent since I was the one carrying the dagger. The door is closed, not how I left it. It could mean Linette cleaned in there, or it could mean I’m about to come face to face with some Hunters.

I can’t see anything through the gap between the door and the frame, so I get down on the floor and peer under the door. At first I don’t see anything but clothes on the floor, and my bed looks like it’s tipped over. Then something moves. Someone wearing black sneakers walks across the room. I spring to my feet and mouth, “Someone’s in there.”

Excerpt from The Bee Charmer by Poppy Lawless
The sound of the honey bees buzzing all around me was sweeter than any Vivaldi concerto I’d ever heard. I sat lotus style in the apple orchard, inhaling the sweet scent of the apple blossoms. My eyes closed, I could feel the white petals falling on me as a soft wind sent them spiraling. The warm spring sunlight shone down on my face. It must have been almost noon. The rays of sun felt warm on my skin. I listened to the bees hum as they danced from flower to flower. Perfection. I inhaled deeply, and with each exhale, set my enchantments on the wind:

Bring a love for Alice.

Now is the time.

Bring a love for Alice.

One that’s finer than wine.

Wine? Not a very good enchantment, and not a very good rhyme. No wonder Alice was no closer to meeting the man of her dreams than she’d been the day I met her three years ago when I’d gotten my assignment.

Wine…of course it would be wine. Ever since I’d set eyes on Viola Hunter, the dark-haired wine heiress who just happened to be the sister of my best friend, I’d been distracted. I imagined her skipping nymph-like through the apple orchard under the spring sun. Imaging, however, was as far as I’d ever taken anything. Viola Hunter, whose family’s vineyard sided my small country farmhouse, had already friend-zoned me. There was little use pining over a woman who just wasn’t into me. After all, Alice was supposed to be my focus. I needed to shake Viola from my thoughts. Poor Alice. I was doing my best, but she still wasn’t where she was supposed to be. I needed to try harder.

I shut out all thoughts of Viola Hunter and set my mind on Alice once more. I tuned into the sounds of nature: the humming of the bees, the rustling of the new leaves, and the feel of the warm sunlight on my skin. This time, I lifted the willow wand sitting in my lap and gave it a wave as I intoned:

Over hill, over dale,

Through brush, through brier,

Over park, over pale,

Through flood, through fire

Bring Alice her love!

This time when I said the enchantment, I could feel the magic. A little sound, like the chiming of a hundred small bells, told me that the spell had worked. I could almost see my words glimmering like gold on the wind, twisting and turning upward toward the sky in search of the one who would bring Alice’s heart joy.

I opened my eyes and looked down at the wand. For a moment, I wished I could just give it a wave and have everything I wanted. But that wasn’t how this worked. Whatever I wanted, I was going to have to work for it. Good thing I didn’t need much. But the moment I thought it, Viola came to mind once more.

My phone, lying in the grass beside me, buzzed. I picked it up to see I’d received a text from Alice. So soon? When I opened the message, however, I was perplexed.

Crisis, she’d written.

What’s wrong? I answered back.

Dumped again. Bring chocolate.

I sighed heavily. When Alice started dating Tom, Chancellor’s local sheriff, I knew it wasn’t meant to be. He wasn’t a bad guy, but they were completely wrong for one another. And I also knew that uniting Alice with her true love meant that Tom would have to go away. But that fast? Wow, maybe I was getting better at this than I thought. Or maybe, it was just time.

On my way into town now. I replied.

There was no answer. It was the midday lunch rush at Alice’s bagel shop. No doubt that would keep her busy, her mind occupied. I frowned. Also, it was the worst time of day to get dumped.

“Time to get to work,” I told the bees. They stopped their tasks then and swarmed, making a passing spiral around me, from my feet to my head. I could sense their questions, their excitement.

“Help me?” I asked. “Help me find the one for Alice?”

With an excited buzz, they flew off happily. I had no doubt they’d do everything they could.

“Thank you,” I called behind them then headed out of the orchard.

My old pick-up sat waiting near the barn. Shielding my eyes with my hand, I gazed across the horizon at the row after row of vines owned by Viola’s family’s business, Blushing Grape Vineyards. I could just make out the roof of the Hunter family’s elaborate mansion sitting along the shore of Lake Erie. So close, but so far away. I sighed and looked out at the lake; the waves were dark blue that morning. The wind blowing off the lake was still cold, even though it was April, but I could feel the earth coming back to life. Spring had come again.

I picked up the cases of honey I’d packed up earlier that day and set them in the back of my truck. Sliding into the driver’s seat, I glanced once more at the Hunter family mansion. Where was Viola today? Working at the estate? Was she busy at the family restaurant downtown? Or was she over at the college where she’d started taking classes once more? The image of her laughing and running through the orchard played through my mind once more.

Alice. I needed to focus on Alice.

I lifted my phone again. Still no reply from Alice.

“Sorry, Alice. I’ll try to do better. Looks like you’re stuck with the worst fairy godfather ever.”

She threw his bathing suit at him. “No looking.” She whirled away from him.

“Oh, I’ll be looking. Lots,” he murmured.

She tried to make sense of the two pieces of cloth that must be a swimsuit. She peeled off her pants and underwear and shimmied into the bottoms.

“Is that a Celtic tattoo on your ass?” he asked. Her head whipped around to find him staring at her butt. He leaned closer to her and squinted. “Or is it a tribal tat?”“Shut up.”

She yanked up the bottoms to cover her drunk sorority dare ink, not that the bikini covered much. Thank God she’d waxed this week.

Seconds later a woman stuck her head in. “You two ready? We’ve been waiting, like, forever.”

Jen yanked down the bathing suit bandanna top. Nikolai grabbed her hand. She adjusted and squirmed to get the suit right as he pulled her outside, barely having time to get her chest properly aligned before they were out the door. After one look at his suit she completely forgot they were no longer in the changing room. She blurted out, “They gave you board shorts that go almost to your knees and I get this?” She plucked at the skimpy two-piece. “An eye patch and a bandanna?”

“Obviously the nice lady underestimated your assets.” He leered at her C’s that were one breath away from a complete spill out of the A-sized bandanna top. “I guess we’re headed somewhere tropical.” He flashed an annoying smile. “I would be glued to the TV every day if you wore that. Hell, I’ll probably have a hard time walking the entire time we’re doing this show if you’re wearing that thing. You’re like Tropical Bar—”

She pointed a finger at him. “Don’t you dare say it. If you utter it, I’m so far beyond kneeing. Now I’ll fist your nuts in a wad so tight that you’ll squeal like a choirboy for the rest of your life.” She plucked at the top again. “If I bend down I’ll flash the entire world.”

He said hoarsely, “I’ll be right there along with the rest of America holding my breath to see it.”

——————————————————————

Chapter 1
It was supposed to be simple.

I actually thought we would be able to step outside our shelter, get the supplies, and be back before anyone realized we’d been there.

This is what happens when my sister’s optimism rubs off on me.

But it wasn’t Dro’s fault that we walked into a damn trap. Hell just hated us.

That was fine. I hated Hell right back.

The cheap metal door was still clanging against the plaster wall of the store I’d just busted into. Max had looked into it when I asked, and told me there would be demons, but he couldn’t tell what kind because his precog was still blurred. I was expecting a couple Reds or ghouls, maybe a Shredder.

I was not expecting Possessors.

The possessed humans weren’t surprised to see us. Even in their human forms, the Possessors should have been able to sense my sister, because she was the most powerful half-demon known to exist. Since she was still on Hell’s Most Wanted List, we had a serious problem on our hands.

The Possessors looked like regular humans, except their irises were solid black. I held back my shiver, knowing just how much pain their souls must be in. Being possessed was one of the worst things a human could experience. I had barely survived it.

These Possessors had taken over a group of tall, bulky men in black clothes. Their hair ranged from shoulder-length to bald, and their arms were covered in tattoos. Each had the tattoo of a rose thorn that appeared to be weaving in and out of their skin, blood dripping from the points. I had the same one inked behind my ear.

This just keeps getting better and better.

Finally, we snapped out of our shock. I went for the hatchet on my hip and grabbed a knife from my inside jacket. Beside me, Warrick took out a handgun. Next to him, Sephiel drew two short swords. Max wisely stepped back, knowing he couldn’t fight half as well as the rest of us. Dro’s shoulders were tense and ready, but I moved in front of her not just to protect her, but to keep her from doing anything that would get all of us killed.

I started reconsidering this when all of the Possessors drew enormous handguns.

But they didn’t shoot. Why weren’t they shooting?

Because someone else was in the room with us. Someone bigger than the Possessors, who stalked out from the shadows into the dim light. My hand tightened on the grip of my weapons, and I expected Warrick to pull the trigger.

Drake Talbot smiled when he saw our anger. He was a huge bear of a man, about six foot three and probably two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle. He had on his black duster and dark pants, his hands on his hips to display the guns and the thick, blunt hilts of his knives easily visible next to his clothes. The top of his head and his chin were covered in dark stubble. Two abysmal black eyes stared at me, filled with sadism and malice.

“Well, look who showed their faces after all,” Drake sneered, standing confidently behind his bodyguards. “We didn’t think you’d make it to Party Town.”

Party Town. I supposed Drake would see it that way. I didn’t think a city full of murderers, rapists, and generally wicked people was a place to party, but Drake was the definition of a masochist. He would see a city of death as home, sweet home.

Warrick didn’t have a kill shot, and that was the only reason I could imagine for Drake to still be standing. All it would take was one missed shot to set off a chain reaction of bullets and blood.

I wanted to see Drake bleeding under my boot just as much as he did, but I wasn’t throwing my knife, either. Something wasn’t right.

“What are you doing here, Drake?” I growled.

He laughed. It was an awful, rasping noise. His black eyes met mine, the same way they had when he stabbed me twice and left me to die. I blocked out the memory, keeping away the phantom pain of a knife sliding into my stomach and ribs.

“Had to pick something up for the boss,” he said mockingly. “You can imagine how fussy he is.”

My blood went cold, and I barely heard Dro’s sharp intake of breath. I could picture Sephiel’s face tightening with anger. Drake looked at all of us, relishing the hatred, pain, and fear we radiated. I controlled it as best as I could, knowing answers were more important than revenge right now.

“What the fuck did you do?” I asked again.

His grin widened, and this time he only looked at me. “It isn’t what I did. It’s what I’m going to do.” He dipped his chin, fixing me with his black gaze. “He’s got plans for you, chica. Serious plans. So much detail has gone into them that even your ex isn’t allowed to intervene. Matt’s pretty pissed about that too.”

Not as pissed as he would be if he heard you calling him ‘Matt.’

“See, I found something really, really special.” Drake continued. “It’s the last thing we need. But don’t worry, sweetheart. You’ll get introduced to it very, very soon.”

My stomach turned. I expected him to say something about wanting Dro. My sister was the real supernatural force in our group. I was human, born and raised. I’d never been anything but. I didn’t want to be.

Whatever was being planned for me by Drake, my former lover, and the creature I feared above anything else could only involve pain. A substantial amount of it.

I’d been on the receiving end of their tortures before. I had no intention of going through them again.

Though if they wanted me for something, they wouldn’t risk shooting me. They would take me alive.

No, they’re not. They’re going to try. And they’re going to fail.

I took a risk myself, and threw my silver knife at Drake.

I didn’t miss–I hardly ever miss–but I didn’t hit my mark.

The thin silver blade slammed into the neck of the Possessor standing beside Drake. The huge bounty hunter had stepped to the side so the blade wouldn’t get anywhere near him. He stepped so far I was a little embarrassed at how off my aim had been. Deep down, I knew better. Drake was fast for someone his size, but it looked like he’d gotten quite a bit from his deal with the Devil.

The man lurched, blood gushing from the wound in his neck. He opened his mouth as though to scream, but a spiral of thick black smoke shot out of his mouth. The Possessor’s true form screeched and twisted away in the back room. Then room exploded into action.

At first I thought the Possessors were going to shoot us. At their cores, they were still gangsters. Yet as soon as I surged forward, I saw them hesitate.

They were here to stall us, not kill us. At least not me, and probably not Dro.

Everyone else though… they were fair game.

Two shots cracked in rapid succession. None of the bullets hit me, though two of the possessed Blood Thorns dropped from the bullets that crashed into their skulls, scaring the Possessors out of their vessel’s dying mouths. Warrick had exceptional aim, and shooting demons with blessed silver bullets was good way to keep them from returning to rip us apart.

I went for Drake, who was backing away to escape through the storeroom exit. Fucking coward.

Two Possessors blocked my path. They tucked their guns away and threw out their fists. I skidded to a stop and stepped back, one of their clenched hands brushing along my temple.

Admittedly, I didn’t think this whole plan through. Seeing the man who murdered my mentor, kidnapped my sister, tortured and tried to kill me sparked my already short temper. So it wasn’t long before they got their shots in.

The man on my left jabbed his fist into my ribs. I winced, giving the man on the right the chance to loop his arm around my throat. I was pinned to his back, my neck straining painfully as he wrenched it up. I used one hand to claw at the meaty arm on my throat, leaving my front completely exposed to the second man. He grinned, thinking he was going to get some revenge on me for the sake of his employers.

Stupid bastard forgot I was still armed.

He pulled back his fist to hit me, and even as his fist was flying for my face, I was moving. I kicked him in the knee with one foot, making him stumble. His fist brushed over my shoulder and into the chest of the man choking me. I kicked his stomach with my other foot, making him double over. Then I sliced the blade of my hatchet into his exposed neck.

Blood squirted out of his severed carotid artery, painting the dirty floor before he collapsed onto it.

The man behind me growled and slammed his fist into my kidneys. I winced at the crushing pain. He was so much stronger now that he was possessed. His grip tightened on my neck, causing black spots to dance in front of my eyes. The Possessor’s free hand shot out to catch my wrist and keep the hatchet away from him. He squeezed until I thought he was going to break my hand.

Then he stiffened and released his hold. A warm liquid peppered my neck, filling the air with the coppery smell of blood. I pitched forward, touching my throat and coughing to get back the oxygen I’d missed. Assured that my neck wasn’t broken, I turned around to see what had saved me.

My little sister stood over the Possessor, the knife in her hand dripping fresh blood onto the floor. The man crab walked away, blood oozing from his fingers as he tried to put pressure on the wound in his throat. He looked terrified of my sister.

At first glance, Dro wasn’t the kind of girl anyone would be afraid of. She was sixteen, and utterly beautiful with the face of a saint. Her skin was flawless and paper pale. Long white hair rested in a braid along her back, ending at the base of her spine. But over the last few weeks, there was a darkness lurking behind her ice blue eyes. A danger that needed to be avoided at all costs.

A malevolence that reminded me of her father.

“What did Drake steal?” she demanded in a cold voice that didn’t belong to her.

“We– we never knew,” the Possessor pleaded. Usually these were the kinds of demons that toyed with their prey. The demon that possessed me had felt Dro’s power, which meant this one must have been sensing it too. I started to understand why he was so afraid.

“We were just told to wait here. They knew you’d be looking for him, and we were supposed to keep you from killing him.”

I glanced at the back door. It was open, and Max was beside it, keeping Warrick from going through. He was likely trying to explain that the revenge-crazed demon slayer wasn’t going to be able to find his nemesis tonight. Warrick was standing profile to me, though I could only imagine the anger burning in his neon green eyes.

“You’re lying.”

Dro’s hollow tone made me look at her again. My eyes flicked down when I saw the light coming from her left hand. Blazing white flames were curling around her wrist, clawing their way up her arm. The Possessor’s eyes widened as he stared at the hellfire she was controlling. He’d probably seen what it could do, and I didn’t blame him for being scared.

“I’m not!” the Possessor cried, snapping me out of my thoughts. His voice was becoming hoarse from the blood loss. “I’m not, I swear!”

I’d been in this situation before. You accused someone of lying, they said they weren’t, and then you started beating the truth out of them. Eventually, you got the answer you wanted. I could tell when someone was putting on a façade, and when they were being honest.

This demon didn’t know shit.

“Dro,” I croaked. I muted my cough. She still didn’t hear me. The fires continued to rise up her arms.

“Dro, that’s enough,” I warned her.

She didn’t listen to me, clenching her fist and increasing the light from the flames until I could no longer see the outline of her hand.

Andromeda,” I half shouted.

My adopted sister turned her head slightly at the sound of my voice. Her eyes locked on mine, and I was amazed at all the anger she was holding back. It softened when she saw me, but not nearly as much as I wanted it to.

“He doesn’t know anything,” I told her. “We’re done here.”

Dro twisted her head back to the dying Possessor, white hair swishing against her back. The hellfire dulled and evaporated from her fist. She looked at the bloody knife in her hand, then went still.

This was the first time Dro had ever killed a human on purpose with her bare hands.

I walked to my sister. I gently placed my hand on her shoulder. She jumped under my touch, glancing back at me. I saw the terrified, ashamed little girl who would never forgive herself for this. I wasn’t happy with that, but it was better than seeing the look of a cold-blooded murderer.

These days, I took what I could get with Dro.

“Go outside with the guys. Make sure Drake’s not waiting to trap us, and that Warrick doesn’t chase after him.”

Dro’s light eyes held my dark ones. “I don’t need to go outside. I can do that from in here.”

I clutched her shoulder just a little harder. “No. You don’t need your powers for this.”

“But–”

“No.”

One look at her narrowed eyes and harsh frown told me that we were going to fight about this later. Probably the moment I saw her again outside.

Regardless, Dro put her knife on her belt, glanced at the dying Possessor one last time, and stormed to the front door. Her guardian and ex-angel Sephiel gave me a small nod. He would protect her from anything while I wasn’t there. As he followed my aggravated sister, I watched Max hesitantly show Warrick the front door. He was smart not to touch him. Warrick looked ready to punch the lights out of the first person that crossed him.

Once they were gone, I picked up my silver throwing knife and sheathed it in my jacket. The other Possessors had vacated their human vessels, leaving behind their dead bodies. Usually Possessors put up more of fight than this. I couldn’t help but remember that they were fodder for something much more sinister. I stood by the dying Possessor, who was now flat on his back and choking on his own blood. Possessors hated to leave their vessels, but I wasn’t going to exorcise him. I didn’t have the time, and even if I did, he was a dead man. The wound in his throat was too grievous. The Possessor was the only thing keeping him “alive.”

I knelt beside his head, dangling the hatchet in front of my knee. When my eyes locked onto his, they weren’t filled with the pain I’d expected them to be. If anything, he seemed proud. Whatever his goal had been, he appeared to have accomplished it.

“Tell me something useful, and I’ll end it,” I told him.

The Possessor made a noise between a rasp and a gurgle. It took me a moment to realize he was laughing.

“Not… long… now,” he choked out. “She’ll be… his… soon…”

He grinned, blood staining his teeth. I decided against the mercy killing. I slowly pushed myself up, ignoring the aches and pains in my body. I walked around the shop, looking through the cabinets and drawers to salvage anything I could. I found some packets of dried and canned food, as well as some bottles of lukewarm water. I never once looked back at the dying Possessor, knowing it couldn’t take me over since I had an anti-possession sigil tattooed over my heart.

Yet I couldn’t shake the foreboding words the Possessor had given me. As I walked out of the store and back into the dark, bloody streets, I recalled what Drake said.

See, I found something really, really special. It’s the last thing we need. But don’t worry, sweetheart. You’ll get introduced to it very, very soon.

There was only one reason Drake, Mateo, and Lucifer himself would target me.

They wanted to capture my sister.

It s all quasi-legal fun until somebody gets framed for murder.

Jessica Moore thrives on misery. Literally. Thanks to a goblin’s curse, she gets a magical high from humanity’s suffering. A shameful talent like that could bury a girl in guilt, so to atone, she uses her dark power to hunt murderers, rapists and other scumbags until one of them frames her for his crimes.

In desperation, Jessica seeks refuge with the one person she trusts to not turn her in, a satyr named Lucen. Like every member of his race, Lucen uses his lusty magic to control Boston’s human population, and Jessica isn’t immune to his power. But the murder victims belonged to a rival race, and when they discover Lucen is harboring Jessica, dodging the cops becomes the least of her problems.

With only five days to find the real killer, Jessica faces a danger far more serious than the brewing magical war. The danger of succumbing to Lucen’s molten seduction.

Warning: Contains a heroine with a lust for misery, creepy murders, and creepier goblins, satyrs so hot you’d sell your soul for one, and scaly sewer rats masquerading as dragons. Who said magic was all sparkles and tiaras?

Excerpt #2
I slumped off the sofa, and my butt hit the floor with a thud. Dull pain flew up my back. Add that to my despair and every pred in a ten-mile radius probably knew I was having a bad night. No wonder Lucen wasn’t touching his wine. I provided enough of a buzz.

“Little siren…”

“You mean stupid, dead woman.”

“Jessica, it won’t be the end of the world. Hitting that Gryphon with a chair was not in your best interest, but it was in mine, so I appreciate it. But so what if the Gryphons decide you can’t be trusted among humans anymore? You’ll live among us. You see we’re not so bad.”

I twisted around so I could laugh in his face. “Yeah right. Except when you’re all trying to turn me into an addict. From my perspective, that’s plenty bad, thanks.”

“Has anyone tried to addict you yet?”

“Not yet, but Dezzi’s counting on my help. When she’s done with me, any of you could.”

“And I’ve known you for ten years. If I wanted to addict you, I’d have done it. Don’t you think?”

Actually, no. I didn’t know what to think about that. Never had. I should have kept my mouth shut, but fear made me angry. “No. I don’t know all the details about addictions. For all I know you’re waiting for the right time. For one of your addicts to die or something.”

“You know as well as I do that I could cut one or all of them loose at any time. It’s not a question of not being able to handle one more.”

“So why wait? You could break my will just like that.” I snapped my fingers. Brilliant, Jess. Just challenge him to do it, why don’t you?

“Do you think I’d enjoy that?”

“I know you would.” Oh yeah, I was earning a Ph.D. in stupidity tonight.

“You’re right. I would.” Lucen scowled and flopped back on the sofa.

I held my breath. Maybe I’d gotten lucky and my outburst wouldn’t get me in trouble, after all. Strange, but I was almost sad about that. I’d primed for a fight. I had anger to expel.

Then Lucen sat up, the scowl gone and replaced by a devious intensity. My stomach twisted. Okay, perhaps a fight hadn’t been a good idea. And I hadn’t gotten lucky. But it was too late now.

“Actually I’m far more insidious than you give me credit for. Your gift was cursed. My magic is inherent in my nature. You can’t compete, and therefore can’t really comprehend what I’m about. But, you see, being evil is a lot like sex. The release is fantastic, but the release is fleeting. It’s the buildup to the release that’s so sweet and lasting. Once I break you, it’s over. Done. But this way I can toy with you for a while, build your fear, prolong the anticipation—ten years so far—and savor the possibility that one day I’ll be too tempted not to finish you off.” He reached toward me, and I stiffened. “What do you think now?”

His fingers brushed my hair. My blood raced, but my breathing stopped. I couldn’t move.

Lucen pressed in closer, and his breath coated my ear like honey. “I haven’t touched you in ten years, little siren. Ten years because you simply asked me not to. What…” He tugged off the band around the bottom of my braid. “Are.” Started undoing the twist. “You.” I wanted to tell him to stop, but I was paralyzed. “Afraid of?”

The last of the braid came apart in his hands. I shivered, breaking the paralysis. “The potential.”

I closed my eyes, wondering what I meant. The potential for him to break me? For me to lose myself and become emotionally attached? For my humanity to drain away? I didn’t know. I didn’t even know whether I should take that speech of his seriously.

Lucen’s hands were on my shoulders now, and my ability to think clearly was fading. “I would never hurt you, little siren. I promise.”

I wanted to believe him, always had, but it seemed suicidal. All the promises in the world didn’t change what he was. He’d practically said as much me to the other day. He was what he was. He did what satyrs—what preds—did. He enjoyed it, and he could do it at any time. Letting him touch me was like baiting a lion. The best animal trainers could get away with it for a while, but occasionally their beasts turned on them.

The one thing she can’t do? Make them trust each other—which means their plans are already falling apart. With Gryphons and satyrs making plays for her loyalty, Jess is ready to cut the crap and kill everyone herself.

The tentative alliance disintegrates even faster when a key member is murdered and Jess’s supposed allies turn on her. Grieving will have to wait. Right now, she’s forced to work closely with her least trusted coworker to flush out the culprit, even as she pushes Lucen away to keep him safe.

Dangers that will test her freakish powers await in the Alps, and this time Lucen isn’t there to guard her back. Even if she finds what she’s looking for, it’ll come with a fury-ous heap of trouble.
