Excerpt #3 “Sure, okay. Let me just climb on your back and ride you like a whale.” He laughed at his own joke, but I just planted my fists on my hips.
“That’s exactly what you’re going to do.”
“Ha! That’s a good one.”
“I’m serious, Eddie. Mermaids are a lot stronger than we look.”
Eddie clenched his jaw and looked away. “I can’t do that, Pauline. I’m the man here. I don’t take piggy-back rides from princesses.”
“Good Poseidon.” I let out an animalistic growl. “You humans are so infuriating. Look, I get that where you come from the women are delicate and you do everything for them, like opening their doors and carrying their purses.” I held out my satchel, my way of showing it was me carrying the load and not him. “Down here, though, it’s different. We rule the ocean. Mermaids build the walls, make the rules, and get everything done. Stop being a chauvinistic piece of krill and let me help you.”
“I am not chauvinistic.” His tone was stern, but his mouth twitched, threatening to reveal his amusement. “I’m independent. There’s a difference.”
“You can’t afford to be independent in the ocean. Surviving down here means working together. You help me where I lack, and I’ll do the same for you.”
“Sounds like a good deal. Except, you’re still not carrying me. That’s too far out of my comfort zone. I’ll walk.”
“You’re either going to kill yourself from exhaustion or it’s going to take us two days to get there instead of two hours.”
“We better get moving then. I’m pretty anxious to see which it’ll be.” Eddie winked at me, and the burning anger creeping up the back of my neck receded in an instant.
I chewed on my lip, mumbling some pretty ugly words under my breath as he laughed. “Fine,” I said. “I have an idea.”
I pinched my thumb and index finger together, pressed them against my lips, and blew. A loud, high-pitched whistle sliced through the water. A second later, I blew again, and then a third time.
He cocked his head, watching me with furrowed brows. “What’re you doing?”
“Calling us a ride.”
“What—like a taxi?”
“What’s a taxi?”
“You know, big yellow car with a horrible driver inside who can’t speak English.”
“A car? Oh, wait. I think I’ve heard of that. It has four wheels, moves by itself?”
“That’s it.”
“I’ll never understand why you don’t just walk where you need to go. It seems unhealthy to live so sedentary.”
“Not everything is close by. Sometimes, the supermarket is like, ten miles away.
“So, you build things within walking distance. There isn’t anything we need outside swimming range.”
“Then what about this ride you’re calling? Must’ve used it before to know about it.”
I shook my head, searching the ocean for a sign of movement. “I’ve never used him for travel, just for fun.”
“Whoa, whoa. Him?”
An eruption of bubbles in the distance caught my eye, and a flutter of excitement burst in my chest. I waved at the shiny grey blob. Realizing it was me, the dolphin whistled and clicked so eloquently one might mistake it for chatter.
He swam right into me, sending me backward with his weight. I grabbed his dorsal fin, and he spun us in dizzy circles as I hugged him. When I finally let go, the seafloor wobbled. Eddie’s outline swayed from side to side, and then settled straight once I regained my balance.
“Um.” Eddie’s jaw hung open as he looked over my dolphin friend, half-fearful, half-dumbstruck. “What. Is. That?”
Somehow, even clueless looked good on him. “This is Mort. He’s my friend.”

Excerpt “What do you mean? Don’t you remember the time you came with us camping?”
The memory hit full force. “Oh, my God, I’d forgotten about that debacle! Your father had some crazy idea about going river rafting on the Esopus and decided camping out would be fun.”
Tristan shook his head. The sun bathed him in a gorgeous light, giving him an almost ethereal halo. “He thought it would be easy but had no clue what to do. Dalton fell off the raft and almost floated away.”
“Yes! And your mom freaked out and dove in after him, almost crashing on the rocks. I was so scared I just hung on to the raft and prayed to survive.”
“Then the tent collapsed in the middle of the night during the thunderstorm.”
“And we were covered in mud and freezing cold,” she added. “Cal and I had a big fight over who got the last hot dog.”
“We had to walk almost a mile in the pitch-dark to get to the bathrooms, and your mom and I were freaking out about bears.”
“And Dad lost one of his shoes and declared we were all going home the very next morning,” Tristan finished, his golden eyes full of mirth. She fought past the giggles.
“No one talked to each other for the rest of the day, and we were hungry and tired and wet and miserable. And I swear, I think it was a raccoon that got Christian’s shoe. Remember how he had to drive barefoot?” Tristan laughed with her. “See, not every family outing is a good thing. Worst vacation ever.”
Another memory flickered and teased her vision. “You kept me safe,” she said quietly. “Do you remember?”
“What are you talking about?”
“In the raft. After Dalton went over the side and your mom dove in after him. I was scared and clinging to the raft, and you came right over. Wrapped your arms around me and told me you wouldn’t let me fall off.”
God, it was all coming back to her. The feeling of being safe with him, knowing he’d never let anything happen. His shoulders stiffened, and his voice sounded strangled when he finally spoke. “I don’t remember.”
“I do. Your dad and Cal were trying to help Diane, so I was left alone. You took care of me.” The words stirred the air, wrapping around them like the breeze that sighed through the trees. Becca’s chatter came from far up ahead. “Did you always feel like I was a responsibility to you, Tristan?”
He stopped the horse. Turned around. She sucked in her breath. His eyes glittered with a fierce golden light, raw with emotion. “You were never a responsibility to me. You were a fucking gift. Never forget that.”
And in that moment, she knew she’d do anything to win him back.

Excerpt A bleak sky, streaked with white, stretches over the desolate South Rim of the canyon. There will be snow tonight.
The grinding of a pickup truck grates through the silence.
A four-door Tundra. Tonneau cover over the bed. Two men dressed in camouflage inside. Fast-food and jerky wrappers litter the wells at their feet. In the back seat, a cooler packed full of beer.
And three rifles, three-inch twelve-gauge magnums, strapped to the padded back-seat gun rest.
Hunters, driving the rim.
The front-seat passenger sets his sights on something moving ahead of them, leans forward greedily. “There we go, there we go.”
The driver follows his gaze, fixes on what he is tracking. Not a deer, but a young girl, shining black hair underneath the hood of her parka. Schoolgirl’s backpack on her shoulder.
On the men’s faces, something crude and capering.
“That’s some tasty-looking pussy.”
“Oh, yeah, that’ll do.”
“Let’s go.”
“Get her.”
The driver swerves the truck over to the side of the road, squealing brakes.
The girl hears the sound, stiffens, is starting to run before she even completes the glance back.
The truck skids to a stop in the snow. The doors fly open; the men are out of the car, grabbing for their rifles.
The girl runs for the rocks, but her pursuers are bigger, faster. Two of them, grown men, against a teenage girl.
They move forward into the strong wind, a military-style formation, heavy boots crunching in the sandy snow.
They pause at the rock outcropping, looking out over the boulders. The girl seems to have disappeared. Then a scrabble on the rocks betrays her. Hearing it, the men grin at each other.
The driver rounds the rock first, his mouth watering. He is already hard in anticipation . . .
The tire iron bashes him across the face, breaking his jaw. He staggers back, howling inarticulate pain.
The girl kicks him viciously in the knee, crumpling him, then swivels as the second hunter rounds the edge of the rock. She slams the tire iron against the side of his head.
Now both men are collapsed on the ground, moaning and cursing.
She steps forward, no longer feigning that youthful, hesitant gait.
She lifts her arm and uses the tire iron on their skulls. Two, three, four blows, and there is no more moaning. Thick crimson drops spatter the snow. Her breath is harsh. Her face is ice.
There is only the wind, swallowing the sound of her breathing.
Cara stands at the edge of the canyon, looking out at the spires of Spider Rock, the vast open gorge.
Below her is an icy crevasse. The canyon has any number of them, deep splits in the rock wall where whole sheets of the cliff have broken away. Behind her is the hunters’ pickup truck.
Their bodies lie at her feet.
She drags one, then the other, to shove them over the cliff’s edge, stepping back to watch each body hurtle down into the crevasse, tumbling into oblivion.
The snowfall tonight will cover all trace of them. Later, birds and animals will pick the bones clean.
Another offering to the canyon, and the gods and ghosts that haunt it.

Excerpt #1 I walked down the stairs and towards Kingsley. He was wearing a blue button-down shirt with a thick black jacket over it and dark jeans. His hair was brushed down and spiked slightly in the front and his eyes were shining. He must have been excited because he was practically bouncing up and down. I fed off his enthusiasm and walked quickly toward him.
When I opened the door, Kingsley walked up to me and gave me a light kiss on the cheek. “You look even more beautiful than the last time I saw you.”
“Thanks.” I took the flowers he offered to me and realized I had no idea what to do with them. Did I take them with me? I didn’t have a vase or anything to put them in. I was going to kill the first set of flowers a boy had ever given me. As my mind started to swim, Kingsley held up his backpack.
“I thought you might need this.”
I reached out to take his bag and he quickly pulled it away.
“Uh, sorry. I don’t like people touching my bag. Just hold on a second.” He unzipped the main pocket. Inside was a beautiful glass vase. “I didn’t think you would have brought one of these to your dorm, so I went out and got one.”
“You’re right, I didn’t have one. Let me take these upstairs and put the flowers in some water.”
“Great, I’ll come with you.” He took my hand and opened the door for me. We walked hand in hand to the bathroom to fill the vase with water, and then to my room. Geez, was I grateful that I had nervously cleaned earlier, or this would have been really embarrassing.
“It’s nice that you have a single. You don’t have to worry about a nosey roommate or anything like that.”
“I like that I can set everything up the way I like. For example,” I said, and placed the flowers in the middle of my desk, “I like the flowers there and I don’t need anyone else’s opinion, well, expect yours. Do you think they look good there?”
He laughed lightly and ran his hand down my cheek. “Yes, they look perfect. I’m glad you like them.”
I smiled up at him as my pulse raced. He was standing very close to me and I could feel his breath on me. He was going to kiss me. I held my breath and closed my eyes, willing myself not to panic. His lips brushed mine gently and the butterflies in my stomach settled. It felt right kissing him.
Kingsley pulled away before the kiss could heat up and he smiled at me. “I didn’t want to wait until the night was over to kiss you. To tell you the truth, I’ve wanted to kiss you since I helped you got a hole in one last night. It was such a turn-on knowing I’d helped you do that.”
I forced a smile. This was definitely not the time to remind him that I actually already knew how to play. Instead, I did the one thing I could think of to change the subject. I placed my hand on the back of his neck and pulled him in for another kiss.
His hands snaked around my waist and he pulled me closer to him. He licked my lip a little and begged me to open to him. As soon as I did, I practically melted in his arms. Kingsley took control of the kiss and taught me a thing or two. I fought desperately to keep up with him as the kiss became intense. It wasn’t long before I caught up, realizing how easy it was to kiss him.
Suddenly, Kingsley pulled away but hugged me tightly. “If we continue this, I can promise you that we will miss our reservation, and that green dress looks too good on you to stay in. I want to show you off.”

Excerpt #2 They planned this. Every second of my time here has been carefully calculated. They feed me, get me a little drunk, then spring the dance on me. Pure evil.
The lighting in the room is already dim; since we’re in a wine cellar, there are no windows. I just have to worry about bus boys and waiters. I check the door one more time.
“Don’t worry,” Rachel says. “I told them we’d let them know if we needed anything.” She moves to the other side of the room and sits alone.
“You’re not going to watch?”
She smiles and crosses her legs.
“I don’t like to share.” Her foot bounces inside her stiletto. I watch her brown heel dangle on her toes, and the room goes quiet.
“Maybe we can schedule a private for later,” she suggests, and I no longer have to worry about having a limp dick.
I would never fuck Rachel, but the idea of dancing for her turns me on. Even after all the humiliation she’s put me through, that woman just does it for me. You always carry a special place for your first.
“Come on!” a woman yells. “I want to see what I’m paying for!”
My song comes on over the speaker, and I’m in work mode. I smile down at Rachel and run my hand across her cheek.
“Later.” I wink. Mostly it’s for show.
Mostly.
Her foot stops moving and her lips part as I turn and walk away. I want her to want me. It’s our sadistic game.
I stroll past the table and consider using it as a stage, but it’s full of glasses and salad plates. Having a crouton stuck to my ass isn’t sexy. I scan the line of women waiting for me to get naked. Usually, I focus on one, but this situation is highly unusual. I decide to work my way down the line.
I move from woman to woman, undressing as I go. When I’m in my boxer briefs, I retrieve the towel from the table. This routine is typically done with whipped cream. The dancer is supposed to spray it on himself then rub the woman’s face in it. Rico sprays it just above his dick. There have only been a few times when someone tried to give him a blowjob. Most women just take the whipped cream in the face and go back to their seats. I don’t think this is one of those times.
I’m not surprised when the towel fits my waist perfectly. These women are fucking prepared. I search the table for something I can use in place of the whipped cream.
Wine is too thin. Coffee creamer might work. I find a little silver dish filled with thick white cream. I dip my finger in it, ranch. I catch Rachel’s eye, and we laugh.
Fuck it.

My Review At times, DREAM ME felt like two different tales, but woven together, they tell the story of Babe and Zat, an unusual couple in an impossible situation. Babe’s father is a golf pro, and she and her family move around for his job. The latest move takes them to the Florida coast where she meets the locals over the summer before her senior year of high school. Included are the queen bee, Mattie Lynn and her minions, LeGrand, the poor little rich boy who only comes on his yacht for the summer with his parents, and Mai, the daughter of the owners of the local fish market who befriends Babe. An avid tennis player, Babe takes a job in the tennis pro shop where she helps Mattie Lynn with her charity program, throwing her in the path of other local kids. The move also triggers vibrant dreams where Babe continually meets with a boy named Zat. She’s inexplicably drawn to Zat and during the day, longs for sleep so she can be with him.
Throughout the summer, Babe navigates the waters of new friendships, unusual dreams, and corporate politics when the chairman of the board of the club where she and her parents work has designs on an underage Babe. The majority of the story takes place during waking hours and reads like a typical contemporary novel. The dream sequences are written as blog posts by Babe. What it’s missing, for me anyway, is more time travel. Billed as a young-adult time-traveling romance, I expected more time traveling. Yes, Zat is from the future, but it’s Babe’s story for the most part. Zat’s point of view is told in third-person and is sparse and too brief in my opinion.
Plot The plot is two-pronged. The first centers on Babe’s dream world and her relationship with Zat. The other is her relationships with the people in her waking world. Even as Babe grows closer to Zat in her subconscious, her friendships with new friends develop and grow. There isn’t much overlap, which is why it feels like two separate stories sometimes. There are some things I would have liked to see more of, though. For one, with something this sci-fi-y, I would have liked to see a little more world building. I didn’t understand how the time travel worked or what the rules were. This became particularly muddled at the end. The other is that I felt like Babe’s relationship with Zat wasn’t nearly as well developed as her relationships with Mai or LeGrand. Even her relationship with Mattie Lynn seemed to have more depth. As a result, I was a little ambivalent about them being together.
Characters I loved Babe. She’s spunky, fierce, but still believable as a seventeen-year-old girl. LeGrand, Mai and the rest of Babe’s friends are exactly the kind of friends anyone would wish for. But I never got a strong sense of who Zat is, even though we get bits and pieces of his point of view.
What I Enjoyed About DREAM ME 1. Babe. She’s a fantastic young adult protagonist with the right balance of burgeoning independence and insecurities to make her completely relateable.
2. Settings. The author has the ability to bring her settings vividly to life. While I’m not all that familiar with Florida, it was easy to visualize the scenes.
3. Friendship. As the new girl in town, Babe’s blossoming relationships were depicted as organic and authentic.
4. The Concept. I really liked the idea behind DREAM ME, but I felt like it left a lot on the table.
5. Twists. There were a few of unexpected twists toward the end that left me smiling.
Bottom Line A scifi wrapped up in a contemporary with a few of unexpected twists.

Excerpt from Seraphina’s Vengeance
Amanda
The road winds once more and she allows her mind to bend as well. Sera. God how long has it been since she’s seen her? For as long as she can remember she has seen her every single day and now it’s been an entire year since she’s set eyes on her. Ever since that day she showed up in her house in the middle of the night she’s been afraid for her best friend. Things are worse than she led her to believe. She can always tell when Sera is lying to her. She always has some bogus story about backpacking through Europe or some crap her parents may believe, but not her. Suddenly, she gasps. A black cat dashes across the road in front of her before disappearing into the woods on the other side.
Keep an eye out for omens.
The words echo through her as she feels a bead of sweat drip down her spine. She shivers and shakes her head to recover from it. No, she is not going to allow herself to think about that, not now. Not when she’s finally going to see her best friend again. She wants to confront her. She plans to get Sera to spill her guts to her. She’s finally going to talk about the day in the mall when she looked like she saw a ghost and then drove back to the psychic. She went back there and spoke to that ‘Amazing Anna.’ Even though she refused to tell her anything about Sera. The psychic did choose to tell her some things. She said Amanda would be safer staying away. Apparently, she’s not that good of a psychic otherwise she would’ve known that would never happen. Anna did tell her that her life would have great meaning, what ever that means. Her life would be a turning point, but the way she said it made her believe it wouldn’t be for her. She never touched on her future like most. That was all she said before she ushered her out telling her to stay away from Seraphina. That my best friend has to overcome some things before and to not get involved, she can still hear her soft voice to warn her. That was over a year ago. She hoped that was enough time because she can’t stand it any longer.
“Oh crap,” Amanda mutters to herself before she veers the car around sharply, almost missing the turn down the gravel road. “This place is in the middle of nowhere,” she scoffs tossing the invitation into the back seat of her little black sedan. A sigh escapes her as she tries to calm the butterflies in her stomach. Just follow the road. The back of the card said. Her mind wanders then, what if she’s changed? What if she has other Angel friends now? No, this is Sera we are talking about. Her Sera. Her best friend in the entire planet… or is she? Ever since she’s met this Nate character she hasn’t exactly been her Sera anymore. She’s been his.
The trees finally break and the picture before her makes her suck in a breath. It looks like something out of Lumber Jack Times. Holy Crap! The log cabin of all log cabins stands before her. So, while she’s been stuck working at the office alone working over time to nab some extra cash, Sera has been cooped up with some smoking hot Angel in this gorgeous cabin. Life just isn’t fair.
She slips out of the car and slams the door behind her. Definitely not fair, Amanda thinks as her eyes scan the vast lawn and forest before her. The only thing that echoes in her mind:
Keep an eye out for omens.
The black cat flashes through her mind again. It came out of nowhere and just ran straight across the road like it didn’t even care about the car. The last sentence the Amazing Anna ever said to her kept her up for days. It haunts her dreams and she didn’t have the heart to tell Sera with all that has been going on. She likes to keep their phone conversations to an upbeat level because sometimes she can hear the worry and self doubt in her voice sometimes. It’s a sentence that doesn’t make any sense to her. There is no way it’s humanly possible, but as she’s recently learned sometimes things go beyond what is humanly possible. The last sentence the psychic said to her was:
Beware of the black eyes.

Excerpt “I’m going to kiss you now,” Peter said, in a tone that told me in no uncertain terms he was a man used to declaring what he wanted and going for it.
“I…. don’t normally kiss on the first date,” suddenly feeling my stomach burst into a quivering flower of nerves. First kisses could go so very wrong. Teeth bashing, misplaced lips, awkward tongue collisions. And, I really, really didn’t want this first kiss to be awkward. I wanted it to be… more. Then, there was the other reason I wasn’t so sure I wanted to kiss him right then, namely because I didn’t trust myself right at this moment to keep it strictly to a kiss. It had been so long since I’d been intimate, at the first little rev of my engine, I might throw off my clothes and take him right there, in full view of God and the neighbors.
“Can you make an exception… for me?” Peter asked, all the while moving closer, as he reached up and stroked my cheek, swiping a bit of hair from my forehead. He was asking me now and I realized no part of me wanted to deny him. All good reason left my brain then. I couldn’t think of a single reason why kissing would be a bad idea.
“Maybe,” I murmured. Then he swept in, gently pressing his lips against mine. It began softly, respectfully, a press of the lips together, before it turned into something… more. My lips parted and suddenly I tasted him, perfect warmth and sweetness, and I felt heat moving through me. He knew exactly what he was doing, an expert kisser. As he pulled me to him, the dry brush of my body lit up like a raging wild fire as the need for this, for him, consumed me. Suddenly, I wanted him, a yawning, hungry want. Before I knew what I was doing, I’d slipped over to his seat, between him and the steering wheel. I hadn’t straddled a man in the front seat since… high school, but somehow, it just felt right.
The kiss continued into a full-blown make-out session. His hands were in my hair, running down my back, cupping my butt as he groaned in my mouth. The sound sent me into overdrive and I could feel how badly he wanted me as I pressed my weight into his lap. I didn’t care that we were parked in the street, or that Mom might be spying on us at that very moment from the windows in my living room. For this brief moment, beneath the warm glow of the dashboard lights, we were on our own planet, connecting in a way that I hadn’t connected with a man in a long, long time.

Excerpt ~One~ New Hobbies
Daddy told me years ago that to succeed in life I need a strong plan, the right tools, and the gumption to follow through. His words of wisdom helped me get elected homecoming queen, become co-captain of the cheerleading squad, and voted on the student council. Now I plan to use them to help me pull off my first burglary.
My plan is solid. I’ve also never backed down from a challenge, not even last year when Brittany Thomas became overly friendly with the entire football team in a sad attempt to deprive me of my crown. People say I started the rumor about the rash of STD cases spreading through the boys’ locker room faster than a brush fire. I didn’t, of course. Why start gossip when the squad of doctors from the local Health Department did it for me?
I take a deep breath as I enter the Trinity Building. At almost four o’clock on a Friday before a three-day weekend, the place is deader than a PTA meeting. It helps that today is the hottest July first on record for Central Texas and the air conditioning in this building is dismally subpar. The Trinity Corporation may claim to have the most upscale rental space in town, but one look at the gold leopard granite floor paired with peach-painted walls shows that’s a downright fib.
The only guard on duty leans back in his chair and sucks down a Sonic Route 44 Coke like his life depends on it. I wave as I pass the security desk, wearing a megawatt smile and fully confident in the strength of my lavender-scented Lavanila deodorant—vegan, of course. Deputy Dawg gives me his usual perv stare before returning to the comic book balanced on his knee.
Centex Therapy, LPC occupies most of the first floor office space. A small bell tinkles when I open the frosted glass door. What decorum the overall building lacks, the waiting room has in spades. Brown leather chairs sit on a bamboo rug and pastel paintings from local artists brighten the walls. A tall grandfather clock in the corner softly chimes four times. This late on a Friday means the room is empty of other patients. Perfect.
Jane, the receptionist, fans herself with a copy of Country Living. “Cutting it awfully close, Gracie. Go on in.”
Dr. McDozzle gives me a pained smile as I enter the room.
“Good afternoon, Miss Mason. Have a seat.” For a head shrinker, he’s incredibly formal. And a non-Texan, who hates football and sweet tea. I haven’t learned much more about him in the last month, but that’s enough to get him tarred and feathered if word got out.
The leather recliner squeaks when I sit down. “Thanks for seeing me on a Friday, Doc.” I twirl a strand of newly highlighted platinum hair around my finger. It goes wonderful with my bubblegum pink manicure. “Mr. Anderson, Daddy’s new lawyer, is now insisting I have two sessions a month with you. Of course, Mama’s lawyer says once a month is just fine, seeing how I’m such a well-adjusted high school senior and all. Almost a senior, I guess, since school’s not started.”
Dr. McDozzle straightens his glasses. “Yes, well, your parents do seem to have quite the barrage of attorneys involved in their divorce. Have you worked on the homework I gave you during our last session?”
This is such a waste of time. My parents have spent the last five years embroiled in a divorce dirtier than a greased pig-wrestling contest. Both sides of the family have more money than sense, much to the delight of every lawyer in the tri-county area. Not that I want my parents to get back together. Anytime they’re within spitting distance of each other, the tension between them gives me a migraine. Besides, if they hadn’t split up, I never would’ve met Ben.
Ben’s the son of Daddy’s ex-girlfriend. Until four months ago, they all lived together in Daddy’s condo. Ben is a sophomore at the local college and is truly hot, in a geeky, stud muffin, save-the-world, kinda way. Crushing on my almost stepbrother might seem a bit sketchy, but it’s legal—I Googled it twice.
Which means it’s time to start step one in my Get Ben Plan.
I toss my hair over my shoulder before pulling out a pink glitter notebook from my Eiffel Tower-shaped mini-purse.
“You wanted me to write down my feelings about my parents’ shared custody thing. Honestly, I don’t understand why the lawyers are so panty twisted about me spending a week with Mama and the next with Daddy. It means I get double the wardrobe. Hello? What girl would say no to that? It’s way better than Heather’s situation. I told you about her last time, I think. The girl with the hideous frizzed-out curls but drives a cute BMW Z4 roadster? Anyway, her parents are insane.” I continue a steady stream of babble until Dr. McDozzle’s eyes glaze over.
There’s no clocks in the room, but Dr. McDozzle keeps checking his watch. I’m sure the poor man created a nice therapy plan for me, but I’ve completely derailed it. Mama always says a girl has many tools to choose from in her arsenal—perfectly curled hair, well-placed boobs, and endless chatter are my faves. Besides, Daddy’s been paying therapists a fortune for years to show the divorce court how concerned he is about me. Dr. McDozzle’s earning his car payment today.

Welcome to the book blitz for ELEMENTAL LIES, the second book in the young adult fantasy series, The Essential Elements, by Elle Middaugh. See below for information on the book, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
ELEMENTAL LIES (The Essential Elements #2) by Elle Middaugh
Synopsis Valerie Moore is an Elemental, a person who commands one of the classical elements of wind, water, fire, or earth. She’s special, though. She controls two—fire and water—though sometimes it seems like they control her.
After the accidental exposure of Elementals to humanity, Valerie finds herself—and all of her kind—struggling to attain equality. Three different groups fight to secure leadership, and with all of their hidden agendas, she doesn’t know which side to choose. The balance between peaceful cohabitation and all-out war is precarious, at best.
When a chance meeting brings Val and earth Elemental Cade Landston back together, everything changes. She realizes what she knew in the beginning—that he’s the one she wants. Her desire to win him over draws her closer to him, and his vengeful mission to hunt down her murderous grandfather brings them both closer to trouble.
From mysterious doppelgangers to reckless rescue missions, scapegoat bombings, and evolving Elemental powers, Valerie strains to keep up.
All she knows is she must stop her grandfather at all costs. To do so, she has to figure out the truth, but how can she do so when almost everyone she knows has been telling lies?
—————————————————————————-
Excerpt #8 “So, during the past few months we’ve gone over how to control your fire, and how to reel it back in once you’ve lost control. We’ve gone over some offensive tactics, as well as some general strategic moves and plays, but today is defense. In other words,” he said with a devious grin, “how do you contain someone else’s chaos?”
At that, the trees surrounding Chase immediately burst into flames. Fire licked up the rough trunks and scurried rampantly across the bare, brittle branches. In rapid succession, he threw fireballs at the trees the initial burst hadn’t touched. Before I had a chance to blink, let alone figure out a plan, half the forest was on fire. The heat alone would smother Elise and Jay, and coupled with the billowing smoke, it could prove lethal.
As if on cue, Elise darted out back, a look of cold determination on her face. Almost immediately, she crossed her arms and glared at Chase, keeping a healthy distance from the flames. The smile that lit up his face was so radiant it could kill. It stabbed my chest like a set of fangs, slowly leaking venom into my system.
“You dumbass!” she shouted, half gesturing to, half shielding herself from the mess. “I thought an enemy was attacking! Instead, you’re just screaming our location out to them. Put the damn flames out!”
His grin widened, if that was possible. “No can do, beautiful. This is Valerie’s task.”
I narrowed my eyes and took a deep breath of scorching air, irritation mixing with the smoke in my lungs. Forcing my legs into a calm stride, I entered the heart of the destruction and spun in a circle. It was vivid and completely captivating, all heat and destruction and power. It spoke to my soul.
I dropped my eyelids shut, more feeling the fire than anything. Its power was familiar to me, yet oddly foreign, like an accent painting the language a slightly different color. Chase and I both spoke the Fire lingo, but his dialect was not the same as mine. It was harsh and guttural—less talk, more action.
I opened my eyes into a narrow gaze and spied him through the flames. His image wavered like a mirage in the heat.
Being surrounded by Elementals meant drowning in a sea of beautiful faces, and it was easy to be flighty under those circumstances. How could I not want to experience every handsome guy at least once in some way?
I was finally beginning to realize, though, that gorgeousness was now my new norm. All Elementals were inherently gorgeous, and beauty was no longer the strongest pull when it came to attraction. Beauty had become dull.

Synopsis You ever hear the phrase, about as successful as a soup sandwich? Well, that’s me, I’m the soup sandwich, but instead of a soggy mess, you have a twenty five year old with a Bachelor’s degree in nothing useful who just quit her job at the local home improvement store where there were definitely no tortured billionaires looking to tie anyone up–and that’s not a bad thing. I know, it’s looking pretty sad right about now, but at least I don’t still live with my parents…
So, here I am, embarking on a new journey covering the Funerals and Obituaries section of the local paper, the San Diego Metro News, for the editor–braceyourself--my uncle, Sal. Unfortunately, while my parents are on vacation, my Granny and her friends are determined to stir up some trouble–but this time, they may have bitten off more than they can chew–especially when some of the residents of the local retirement community are turning up unnaturally dead.
There is nothing that will keep me from protecting the people that I love, no matter how crazy they may be–not even the sexy, I mean stubborn, homicide detective, Trent Foyle, can stop me.
My name is Shelby Whitmore and I’m kind of the newest reporter for the San Diego Metro News, but hey, I’m a hit with the blue hairs..

Excerpt #3 “Come out, come out, Goldilocks,” Trent’s gravelly voice says with a laugh. “I know you’ve been sleeping in my bed because I put you there myself.”
“Nope,” I whisper. “No one’s here.”
He just laughs again and peels back the covers. I feel a breeze and look down. And instantly dive back under the covers.
“Why am I naked?” I squeal, which sounds a bit muffled because I’m hiding under a big, fluffy down comforter and other blankets and sheets.
“You can’t sleep in clothes,” he answers honestly. “I wanted you to be comfortable.”
“I was in leggings and a sweatshirt. That’s the very definition of comfort!” I snap.
“But you were in a hospital, and those are just chock-full of germs. I did us both a favor. Who knows what we could have caught if you’d have stayed in those clothes.”
“I feel like that depends.”
“Depends on what?”
“Depends on how many times you boned Nurse Brandi and her henchman.” I watch Trent flinch, and I immediately regret my words, feeling guilty for such a nasty comment. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” He shrugs one manly shoulder. “I deserved it. But hear me now. I deserved it. Deserved. Past tense. Present tense, all I want is you.” I gulp. Trent is nothing if not direct. “Plus, you have to be nice to me because your gremlin of a cat has been watching me all morning.”
“Missy is here?”
“Her name is Missy? I would have thought it’d be more along the lines of The Lorax,” he muses.
“She speaks for the trees,” I deadpan. Trent throws his head back and laughs a deep, sexy rumble that I would thoroughly enjoy if my head wasn’t pounding.
“Don’t be mean. She’s beautiful to me,” I say as Missy jumps up onto the bed and starts purring loudly as I run my fingers through her fluffy black-and-white coat.

FAQ: Where did the idea for The Last Shadow Gate come from? This series was in the draft phase for over a decade. I based the characters on my kids and as they grew and developed their own personalities I allowed the characters in the book to do the same. It’s been a labor of love and seeing it finally in print has been a wonderful experience. Every time I read through it I see my daughter and son on every page.
Where do you get your ideas? Ideas for stories come from the strangest places. I never sit down and say ‘let’s write a book’ there’s usually a spark that comes out of nowhere. It’s the littlest things that lead to the big ideas for me. I’m never in a hurry when it comes to writing so I’ll sit on something for quite a while and let it build until I can see an entire adventure from beginning to end. In that way, by the time I sit down to write I usually know exactly where I’m going.
How do you find the time to write? As a father of three, time is always a challenge. Writing is a hobby for me. It’s something I’m passionate about but my focus is usually needed elsewhere. A majority of my writing is done in the quiet of a late night when everyone else is in bed. I take my shots whenever I can get them. I’ve been known to disappear for a short time here and there if I see an opening for a writing opportunity but a majority of the good stuff I get down on paper is done long after everyone else is snoring.

Excerpt #2
“We need whoever provides security around here. Or Hades. They’re bound to be the ones who can open this. If we can find them, we can drag them down here and slap their hand on this thing to get it open,” Alex says.
“We need another way,” Sara says, shaking her head. “We haven’t seen a single person since we got here. It’s too time consuming to track them down. And we’ll never get Hades.”
“Anyone know of any other ways to crack a palm plate?” I ask.
“Short of finding a valid fingerprint and going through an awful lot of steps to create a fake finger, the only other way is to break down the software controlling it,” Alex says.
“Are any of you hackers?”
Alex raises his hand.
“You can hack this?” I ask. “I didn’t know you were a hacker.”
“I’m not. But there isn’t a lot to do when you’re stuck at home with a terminal disease or trapped in a crappy boarding school. I taught myself a few things, made a few online friends who were a little shady. Depending on how sophisticated the software is, I might be able to crack it.”
“Would it be controlled from the computer out front?”
“It might be. Or it might be controlled from a central server that’s who knows where. No way to know without looking,” he says.
“That computer is password protected. If you try to force it, you may set off alarms.”
“Then I’ll have to be careful,” he says, heading back to the lobby.
We follow and gather around the desk while he works. The keys clack under his fingers as he mutters instructions to himself.
“Okay, I’m in the system,” he says. “While I’m here, I’m going to shut down those security cameras. No need for everyone to know where we are.”
The TV feed blinks and is gone.
He keeps typing and clicking and muttering. The rest of us sit down on the floor and wait. There’s nothing we can do.
“Huh. That could be tricky,” he says.
“What?” I ask, getting up and going around the desk so I can see his screen. Not that the gibberish there means squat to me.
“The system that controls the fingerprint scanners also controls the card locks. Worse, it’s not separated by floor. I’m not good enough to bring down only one piece of the system. It’s all or nothing.”
“What’s the problem?” I ask.
“It means that the only thing standing between us and whatever is behind those cell doors is the hope that none of them try the doors. If the inmates figure out the doors are open, then security will be the least of our problems. All of them could walk right out of here.”
“Do it,” I tell him. “It’s not like we’ll be broadcasting the locks are down. No one will notice. Hopefully.”
“Okay,” he says and goes back to pounding on the keys.
After a few minutes, the computer beeps and Alex pushes away from it.
“Done,” he says.
The words are barely out of his mouth when a series of small pops echoes around the room. They sound like they’re both surrounding us and simultaneously heading away from us.
“Aw, shit,” I say. “The locks. We forgot they make noise! We are idiots. Come on,” I say, racing for the doors on the right.
We slam through the doors and pull up in front of door number four. No one is coming into the hall yet. I’m hoping the inmates think it’s a trap and are too intimidated to try their doors. Either that or they didn’t hear the locks release. Please, just let me get out of here before hell literally opens, I think.

About the Author Jennifer is a freelance writer and novelist. As a freelancer, she writes everything from technical manuals to articles on personal finance and European-style board games. Her interest in storytelling began when she was six and her parents gave her a typewriter for Christmas and agreed to pay her $.01 per page for any stories she churned out. Such a loose payment system naturally led to a lot of story padding. Broken Fate, her first novel, earned her $2.80 from her parents.
Jennifer lives in North Carolina and, when not writing, can often be found reading, trawling the shelves at the library, playing board games, watching sports, camping, running marathons, and playing with her dog.
