Welcome to the book blitz for JUST JENNY, the first book in the adult contemporary romance series, Blue Ridge Valley, by Sandra Owens. See below for information the book, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
Synopsis The small mountain town of Blue Ridge Valley is the home of three best friends, Jenny, Autumn, and Savannah. Each woman believes she has her life perfectly planned, but there is a saying in the mountains… If everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
In Just Jenny, Jenny Nance has a plan—save enough money to tour the world. The desire to traipse the globe is a dream she once shared with her twin sister. Jenny made a deathbed promise to her sister that she would go to all the places they had fantasized visiting together. Nothing will entice her to break her vow to Natalie, not even the sexy new Blue Ridge Valley police chief . . . No matter how attracted she is to him.
Dylan Conrad left the Chicago Police Department to accept the position as Chief of Police in Blue Ridge Valley. Burned out and haunted by a tragedy of his own, he needs to get away from the memories tormenting him. He’s hoping to find peace in the small mountain town, but the quirky residents, an infamous moonshiner, an errant prized bull, and a feisty redhead by the name of Jenny weren’t quite what he had in mind.

Excerpt #1 I chuckled as I walked to my car. I’d felt Jenny Girl’s eyes on my back and had stifled the urge to flex my ass cheeks for her viewing pleasure. If the women in this town were as pretty as the bartender, I was going to enjoy living here. Watching her was better than seeing the Energizer Bunny in action. She owned that bar and ran it like a well-oiled machine, making drinks and chatting up the customers without missing a beat. Well, chatting to everyone but me, which right there said she was too aware of me for her peace of mind.
Every time she shook a martini, her ponytail bounced against her back, and all I could think about was wrapping that long red tail around my hand and holding her still while I kissed her senseless. Yeah, parts of me long dead were coming back to life. I definitely intended to see her again.
If I had to guess, the asshole at the bar was her boyfriend, but maybe not for much longer. I hoped not. The dude needed to learn how to treat a woman. I’d stood back for a few minutes, listening to them, and it had been all I could do not to say something. With any kind of luck, I’d run into him one day when I was on the job.

Excerpt Charlotte stared at her computer screen, unsure if she should be thankful or irritated at her new muse. She usually wrote about five thousand words a day, many days even more than that. But over the last few weeks she’d written only twelve thousand words, four thousand of which she’d written after meeting über-serious and insanely handsome Beau. She’d never had to rely on anyone else to fill her creative well before, and the fact that he’d uncorked whatever had stopped up her pipes was bothering her.
She leaned back, propped her toes on the edge of her desk, and twisted her chair from side to side, trying to analyze the situation. After returning Chris Pine to her toy room, she’d shown Beau around the property. He’d remained just as serious and had taken pages of notes. She couldn’t imagine what he’d seen that needed fixing. There hadn’t been anything sexual about their interactions, although she had to admit she’d stolen a shameful number of glances at his gorgeous body. For research purposes, of course. And she’d come away with four thousand words worth of inspiration.
She gazed outside at the setting sun, and Beau came into view. He was carrying a ladder up from the workshop. Shirtless.
“Good Lord.”
Her feet smacked the hardwood as she scrambled over to the window. Her eyes swept over the hard set of his chin, those ever-serious eyes focused on the path before him, and heaven have mercy, gorgeous planes of olive skin stretched tight over his muscular torso. She breathed faster with each of his determined steps. As he neared the corner of the building, she pressed her cheek to the glass, eking out the very last second of her view before he disappeared around the corner.
Turning her back to the window, she pressed her hand over her racing heart and closed her eyes. It had been years since a man had affected her this way. Although she didn’t get many visitors, she opened the inn for a few weddings and charity events. During those times, the grounds were crawling with athletes, actors, and other wealthy, sharply dressed men. None of them had stolen her concentration for more than a passing glimpse of appreciation, but images of Beau taunted her—his pulsing jaw muscles, the weighty intensity of his eyes, and that curt nod that should turn her off but piqued her interest even more.
Was it him that had her so flustered, or was it that he’d provided the missing inspiration for her writing? Writing was not only her career, but it was her emotional lifeline. It had pulled her through the most devastating times of her life.
Surely her heart was racing because of the return of her muse. Of course that was it. She’d been so upset about having writer’s block, her body was just celebrating the reprieve from it. That made perfect sense, except now she couldn’t stop thinking about him and how virile he looked carrying that stupid ladder.
She needed to capitalize on it.
She slipped into writer mode, sat at her keyboard, and went to work creating a scene to go with the ladder—and that man. As she hammered it out, she feared her muse would disappear again, and her pulse skyrocketed.
Yup. Definitely the muse and not the man.
She couldn’t afford to lose this inspiration. She needed to keep feeding her muse so she could make up for lost time and write this book. The idea behind the four thousand words she’d written had hit her like a sensual slap in the butt when she’d made that comment about the handcuffs and his bed. Her fingers stilled over the keyboard as an idea formed. A little harmless flirtation might lead to an incredible story.
She grabbed a pen and paper and scribbled titles as they popped into her mind. Nail Me. Hammer Time. Climb Me, Baby.
Okay, maybe her muse was still a little off, but she was coming back! Now that she had a plan to keep her muse alive, she focused on creating the story of the sexy contractor and his enormous tools.

Excerpt He appreciated every inch of her, including that big brain that she didn’t hesitate to use to best him whenever possible. That was some pretty sexy shit right there.
“Are you not a meat eater? Because that’s something I should know up front.” The kind of thing Wren should put in her file. Damon didn’t think that was too much to ask.
As predicted she frowned at him. Shot him one of those you’re-wasting-time looks that she’d been using on him nonstop since they met. “Are you serious right now?”
“Because I eat a lot of burgers and if that’s going to offend you, I can eat something else. I won’t like it, but I will.” Her fidgeting must be rubbing off on him because he picked up his fork then set it down again.
She leaned across the table. “How many burgers?”
Now this was a topic he could handle. Especially since she asked the question in a soft voice, as if they were sharing a secret. “Every day.”
She sat back hard in her seat again. “You do not eat a hamburger every day.”
He ignored the horror in her voice. “True. Some days I mix it up and order a cheeseburger. If I’m feeling particularly frisky I’ll have a steak sandwich.”
“That seems like an invitation to heart disease.” And she was back to shifting around. She crossed and uncrossed her arms before she grabbed for her napkin again.
He could not stop watching her. Energy buzzed off her. He found the mix of tough talk and nervous fidgeting unexpectedly hot. “You’d think, but no.”
“I’m going to pretend you’re kidding.”
“I’m not.”
She cleared her throat. “Shauna.”
They could circle back to food because she had his attention now. He refused to joke about this topic. “Your sister.”
“She’s three years older.”
He noticed she didn’t use the past tense. Shauna died ten years ago and Cate still saw her as an “is.” For Damon, that meant treading carefully. “And you are . . . ?”
“Twenty-nine.”
He knew that answer before she said but thought keeping her to facts might help her emotionally wade through the next part. He’d helped Wren with other cases and this piece—dealing with the grief—never got easier. Damon had a load of grief and guilt of his own piled on top of hers, so he got it.
He nodded to her. “Go ahead.”
“The questions you ask don’t seem that pertinent.”
“I’m going to be honest with you.” He started to lean forward when the waiter came by and dropped off their food. The smell of grilled hamburger filled his senses as he reached for his folded napkin and threw it across his lap.
She didn’t move. “That would be a good way to start.”
“Wren already gave me a file he had on you. The man is an expert at collecting information and then making Garrett put it together in a nice big, easy-to-understand breakdown of what happened and when.”
For a few seconds she sat there, quiet, as her gaze moved over his face, studying him. “Then why are we here doing the get-to-know-you thing?”
He popped a french fry in his mouth. “I’m hungry. That happens a lot. The need-to-eat thing. So, you’ll need to get used to it.”

CHASING HIM (Bishop Brothers #3) by Kennedy Fox
About the Book – Read for Free on Kindle Unlimited! Title: CHASING HIM Series: Bishop Brothers #3 Author: Kennedy Fox Genre: New Adult Contemporary/Western Romance Release Date: June 28, 2018 Link: Goodreads | Amazon | Amazon UK | Amazon CA | Amazon AU
Synopsis John Bishop isn’t your typical single dad.
Reserved, impatient, and utterly clueless.
Running the family’s bed and breakfast has many perks. Working long hours, picking up after the guests, and hearing couples going at it all night long aren’t any of them. Hooking up with girls who come to the ranch for horseback riding lessons? Best perk of them all.
That is until a baby shows up at his doorstep with a note claiming it’s his. Growing up on a ranch was anything but easy, but raising a newborn is proving to be the hardest task he’ll ever tackle. Leaving the bachelor life behind, his only priority is to hire a nanny who can teach him a thing or two about parenting—except he doesn’t anticipate her being gorgeous and quirky with an unhealthy football obsession.
Mila Carmichael has many talents—making balloon animals, creating origami art, and remaining in the friend zone. Often seen as one of the guys, she’s struck out more times than a rookie baseball player.
Seeking a new adventure, she flies to Texas to visit family and is offered a position she can’t refuse. Helping out a new dad should come easy to her, considering her past experience, but what she doesn’t anticipate is him being an attractive Southern temptation.
But that’s only the beginning.
While growing close to his family and falling madly in love with the baby girl who’s stealing their hearts, things are bound to get complicated. Everyone knows not to mix business with pleasure. That means no late movie nights, no stolen glances, and definitely no kissing behind closed doors. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll threaten taking away the main thing that binds them together.

Excerpt John’s POV
As soon as I walk into the living room, I see Mila in tight blue jeans and a low cut shirt that shows way too much cleavage.
“Nope.” Resting my hands on my hips, I look at her, trying not to stare at her chest. It doesn’t help that her nipples are hard as a damn rock either. Fuck. Eyes up.
“Nope, what?” she asks, furrowing her brows in confusion as she grabs Maize out of the swing.
“You can’t wear that shirt. Actually, we should probably set some ground rules since you’ll be staying here around the clock.”
Mila rolls her eyes and kneels down in front of the carseat. She’s dressed Maize in an outfit that says something about Grandma being her favorite, and I know Mama is going to love it. “Is that what you do ‘round here? Make rules for everyone?” She arches an eyebrow with a cocky smirk on her face.
Tilting my head, I narrow my eyes and study her. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Ask Jackson.” She carefully places Maize in the car seat and straps her in. I suck in a deep breath remembering the nanny rules I’d given Jackson, the ones she wasn’t supposed to hear.
“Jackson needs rules. He has zero boundaries. And it’s not like he listens to anyone anyway. Trust me. It’s an open invitation to flirting and ridiculous comments from him. So you can’t be wearing shirts like that around him.”
“…or I can’t be wearing shirts like this around you?” she quips, not paying any attention to how frustrated I’m becoming. “I think I can handle Jackson, so stop worrying yourself.”
“Whatever, Mila.”
She straightens up and looks me dead in the eyes. “You’re my boss and you can make any crazy rules you want when it comes to your baby, but you don’t get to tell me what I can and can’t wear, unless you’re instating a dress code for me and if that’s the case, I want a raise and a clothes allowance then.”
I scoff, crossing my arms over my chest that’s rising and falling rapidly. “How much for you to wear baggy overalls and turtlenecks every day?”
“You’ve got jokes, do you?” she mutters, not amused. “Why not just put a chastity belt on me too while you’re at it?”

Synopsis Heartbeats had a pesky way of complicating things. They almost always came with the nasty side effect of humanity and finally… death. Since Thorne came into my life, I’d been plagued with both. Heartbeats and humanity.
Both of these things were going to be the death of me. One way or another. And the death of everyone I knew and loved, a list growing longer with every beat of my newly repaired—and irritating—heart. That pesky humanity was almost as toxic as the most debilitating illness on this hunk of rock, killing more humans than any vampire could.
Love.
And there I was, attached to a slayer who I couldn’t be undead without. Friends who I was becoming increasingly attached to. All things—people—he would take away from me. Then he’d take me too. But if it came to that, I’d yank out my beating heart and crush it in my hands before he could touch me.
It was lost anyway. If he won, my eternity would come to an end. As it happened, so would the world.
That only meant I couldn’t lose.
—————————————————————————-
—————————————————————————-
Excerpt “We need to talk about him,” Thorne said, his voice tight.
“Who?” I asked, swiping my face with blush and pretending to be innocent.
It didn’t work well, despite me being an excellent actress. Someone as fucked up as me couldn’t even feign innocence; they could only ruin it.
Plus, I knew who he was talking about. I could sense it in his very words. We hadn’t uttered his name since we left the compound, and the all-night sexathon did not warrant such conversation.
Thorne’s quicksilver gaze bored into my reflection. “Your fucking husband.”
I paused for a sliver of a second before I resumed applying my makeup. “I’d say that our marriage is considered null and void after he faked his own death and then tried to kill us both, don’t you?” It was a considerable effort to keep my voice tight with sarcasm and nothing else, but I did it.
“He was something to you, Isla. You told me as much when you told me the story of his death.” He paused. “He was something to you, and now he wants you back. And he’s made it quite clear that he’s going to kill every single person who gets in his way. I didn’t miss your reaction when Alexus said those words.”
I put the brush down, laying my palms flat on the marble counter, glaring at his reflection. “No, he was something to the human I used to be,” I corrected, my voice rising slightly. “He’s nothing to the vampire I am now. Nothing but another target to take out in the middle of this war.” The lie sounded weak even to my ears.
Thorne stepped forward, face tight and blank, his energy swirling around me. “You may be able to lie to yourself about that, but you can’t lie to me. There’s still something there. He still has something over you,” he rasped, coming to stand behind me but not touching me.
I pretended I didn’t care, that I didn’t crave his touch, that I didn’t need it to chase away the sickness that carried Jonathan’s memories. “He doesn’t. Videos weren’t invented five hundred years ago, so he can’t show everyone how dreadfully dense I was,” I retorted. “Nor can he broadcast my equally dreadful fashion sense, so I’m good.”
Abruptly, Thorne’s fist shattered my reflection. Glass rained down around us, and the fragrance of his blood filled the air, mingling with his hot and wild fury.
“Stop it!” he roared, snatching my shoulders to painfully twist me around.
The pop of my shoulder dislocating echoed through the room.
I gaped at his fury-filled eyes. They were so far gone he hadn’t even noticed injuring me in the midst of it.
“Stop with the jokes, with the sarcasm,” he hissed, voice a blade. “I watched it. I watched you fucking freeze and turn into some kind of robot in the middle of the battle at your parents’ house. Watched you walk toward him. Nothing has control over you. Or I’d thought that until I saw him. He has control over you, Isla.” It was an accusation, but it was something else too, something more than jealousy.
Something like dread. A sickening premonition of the visceral fear he’d feel when we were faced with Jonathan again.
But I wasn’t about to inspect it, because it would mean that I had to recognize whatever feelings had been dredged up from the grave along with Jonathan. “No one has control over me, Thorne,” I lied. “Not even me.” My voice was pure ice. “And especially not you.”
I wrenched myself out of his grip and stormed from the room.

Excerpt The hospital is a beacon of light and hope as we pull in. I barely remember to put my car in park before I jump out and I leave it in the middle of the lane, the tires wrenched haphazardly toward the curb.
“Ma’am, you can’t park there,” a guy in a security uniform says with his fake badge, but I don’t answer. I toss him my keys and push my way to the doors, and that’s when I see him.
My son.
They’ve pulled him out of the ambulance, and he’s so still, so white. He’s got the body of a man and the face of a boy, and he’s got vomit in his hair. One hand dangles over the edge of the gurney, orange flecks dripping from his fingers to the floor, but no one notices, no one cares.
“Beck,” I breathe, and he doesn’t open his eyes. “Beck,” I say louder, as loud as I can. His mouth is slack, but he’s not dead, he can’t be dead because someone is pumping his heart with her fist. She’s running next to the gurney, and she’s pounding on his heart, making it beat.
“Coming through,” she yells at the doors, and there is a team of people working on him. They’re frantic, and that’s not good.
I chase after them, through the emergency room, through the people, but someone grabs me at a giant set of double-doors, the gateway to the important rooms.
“You can’t go in there,” a nurse tells me.
“That’s my son,” I try to tell her, but she doesn’t care. “Beck,” I scream, and I try to see through the windows, but I can’t because he’s gone. “I love you, Beck. Stay here. Stay here.”
The nurse grasps my arm, and I can’t stand anymore. My legs are tired and the adrenaline… it numbs me. I collapse beside her and she tries to hold me up, but she can’t… I’m on the ground.
My face is wet, when did I start crying?
“You have to save my son,” I beg her, my fingers curled into her arm. I stare into her eyes. Hers are green, ringed with blue, and she looks away. Something about her seems so familiar, something about those eyes.
“We’ll try, ma’am,” she says uncertainly. It’s the uncertainty that kills me. “We’ll do everything we can. I’m going to take you to a quiet room, and give you a blanket. Is there anyone I can call for you?”
I shake my head. “No. I already called my sister.”
“Okay,” the nurse says quietly and her name tag says Jessica. She takes me to a waiting room, a quiet private one, the ones they use when the outcome might not be good. I know that because I’ve been here before.
I swallow hard and she puts a cup of coffee in my hand.
As she does, she pushes a stray hair out of her face and her bracelet catches my eye. A simple chain with a silver dolphin on it. I’ve seen it before.
“You were here the night my husband was brought in,” I realize slowly. “Weren’t you? Do you remember me?”
It was a year ago. A year, two months… I check my watch… six days and twenty-two hours ago. Of course she doesn’t remember me.
But Jessica nods.
“I’m so sorry about your husband,” she tells me now, her voice quiet and thick. “I swear to you, we did everything we could.”
“I know,” I tell her. Because I do. The accident was so bad, there’s no way anyone could’ve survived. Except for Beck. He lived. But Matt...his injuries were insurmountable. That’s what the doctor told me that night.
I stare at the door, and this is the same room and that is the same door, and this is the same blue-tiled floor. For a minute, I’m back in that moment, and the doctor is coming in. I’d waited for hours and his face was so grave and I knew, I knew, before he could utter a word.
I shook my head because I didn’t want to hear what was coming next, but he spoke anyway.
Matt’s injuries were insurmountable, he’d said. We did everything we could.
But everything wasn’t enough, and my husband died.
“Is it a different doctor tonight?” I ask suddenly. “I need a different doctor. One who can save my son.”
I know it’s illogical. I know it was never the doctor’s fault, but it doesn’t matter because Jessica is nodding. “It’s a different doctor tonight,” she tells me. “Dr. Grant, and he’s very, very good.”
“Okay,” I whisper. “Okay.”
“If you need anything, you tell me,” Jessica says and I can see that she means it. She likes me. Or she feels sorry for me. It doesn’t matter which. I nod and she’s gone, and I’m alone.
Just like I was a year ago, and just like that night all I can do is pace.
I’m a caged mama wolf and there’s nothing I can do, but I know that if I stop moving, Beck might die. My energy is attached to his energy. I have to move. It all depends on me.
So I walk in circles.
I walk six paces, over the six white tiles, then I turn, taking three steps over the blue. I tread back six paces over the white, and then turn again, taking three more over the blue.
I will not stop, Beck. I won’t fail you. I won’t.
It becomes rhythmic, and I match my breaths with my steps. I’m a machine, a time-keeper, a being made of clock-work as I walk in circles, marking time. Every step I take, Beck is still alive. I feel it in my heart. It’s all up to me.

After trusting the wrong guy in a case gone totally wrong, Marisol convinces the Conclave, an underground organization of detectives solving supernatural cases, to give her a last chance to prove her worth, and maybe even heal her broken heart
After all, as a half-blood jaguar shifter, Marisol is uniquely qualified to solve this murder—and every scrap of evidence points toward the culprit being a fellow jaguar shifter. But is one of her own people involved, or is this all a ploy to kick Marisol’s mother off the shifter throne?
Then Marisol discovers her best friend, Roan, is missing, and maybe the killer’s next target. The stakes just got higher than political intrigue. Just when things couldn’t get worse, Marisol’s ex-boyfriend-turned-nemesis, Mannix, starts leaving sinister clues for her. Excerpt #1 “Two minutes left.” The smug look had returned to Balthy’s face. He obviously wasn’t convinced I could solve the case in time.
And honestly, I was getting pretty nervous, too. The fact that it took me slightly over ten minutes to figure out a demon was the culprit proved I was still off my game. My focus had suffered drastically during my last mission, and the reason for that had a name.
Mannix.
Just thinking about him put a picture of him in mind instantly. Of his sparkling green eyes that pierced straight into my soul. Of his unruly black hair that sometimes covered his gaze. Of his whiskey-rough voice that promised me things that would never be real… Promises like how he loved me.
And with those words, he’d distracted me, made me bring down the walls around my heart, with the end result that people died. People I cared about.
I shook my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts haunting me, determined not to let feelings get in my way this time.
“Thirty seconds left,” Balthy said in a gleeful tone. “You’re losing your touch.”
The words hadn’t left his mouth before the final pieces of the puzzle clicked into place in my mind. “I’m finished,” I said.
Balthy’s eyes turned into slits and his smile into a scowl as he moved to the door and knocked on it twice. His behavior didn’t surprise me. Balthazar Rollins, snake shifter, Sigil Bearer of the Conclave, and one of the highest-ranked members of our crime-solving institution hated me, my mother, and any non-snake shifter he had ever laid eyes on.

Guest Post
Road to Publication The Blood Oath books weren’t the first books I queried. Back in 2012, while I was still in college, I’d actually queried another fantasy manuscript set in the same world as Blood Oath. (That manuscript eventually ended up self-published and is now, thankfully, out of print.) So I’d already had a little bit of experience with querying by the time I wrote Blood Road in 2014-2015.
Still, I queried Blood Road for eight months before the manuscript generated any interest—and then, a bit unusually, I received a publication offer and an offer of representation from an agent almost simultaneously. I signed with the agent, and a few weeks later, in January 2016, we accepted the offer of publication from Month9Books.
The road hasn’t been without its bumps since then—I parted ways with that first agent and have since shifted genres, too—but Blood Road was released in April 2017, and I’m glad to be able to share the sequel with you now!

—————————————————————————-
Excerpt “Ben!” Some overly excited female across the room shouted the name at the exact moment it settled into my mind.
An instant wave of energy crackled through the nightclub, hotter and more alive than anything the music or dance floor pulsed out. Slight movement rippled through the vast space of the reclaimed warehouse—toward the same metal roll-up entrance door that had been haunting me all night—as heads craned to see, breasts pushed out a little farther, and bodies pressed closer, like a powerful magnet pulled them uncontrollably forward.
Even I couldn’t look away.
After the initial crowd crush, I could see his occasional nod, a brief smile. He angled deeper into the club and scanned an assessing look across the bar, starting at Cade’s end. Seconds later, his sights landed on me—and stayed there, fierce gaze locked on to mine.
My breath caught at the intensity radiating from halfway across the room.
Ben. His simple name echoed larger than life in my head.
The crowd parted as he strode through the room. He stood a good head taller than other men he passed. Broad shoulders strained his black T-shirt with every slight rolling turn as he moved. Dark hair, cut closer on the sides, curled down over one side of his forehead. Shadowy stubble covered a defined jawline as it clenched. Thick brows drew together over eyes that narrowed as he stared hard at me. He stepped through the now three-deep crush at the bar, then planted flat palms on the edge of the metal bar top in front of me.
“What are you doing back there?” he snarled, tone low, heavy with accusation.
Cade braced his arms on the bar beside me, mirroring him. “She’s a new hire.”
Ben never looked away from me. “I asked her.”
Holding his unwavering gaze, I straightened my shoulders, undaunted. “Her name is Shay. And she’s behind your bar…working. Hard.”
Dark eyes narrowed a fraction more, boring into mine. “How old are you?”
Great.
Here we go.
“Old enough.” All he needed to know.
A muscle in that clenched jaw tightened. “Not what I asked.”
“You sure about that?” Because yeah, I looked young, no matter how old I really was. But his heat-seeking-missile aggression? Totally unwarranted.
“ID.” He kept at the groundless demand.
“I’m not some underage club-bunny at the door. I’m an employee. I’ve already been hired.”
“I don’t give a shit. I’m the boss. And I want to see your ID.”
“No.” Not gonna happen. I couldn’t risk it.
He gave a slight nod, smug satisfaction in his eyes. “So, you’re not eighteen.”
“I didn’t say that.” Yet somehow, I sensed our verbal tug-of-war had dragged me across lost ground.
“Are you or aren’t you?”
“I am,” I gritted out, angry that I’d been foolish enough to want something so bad.
“Then no big deal.” He rose back to his impressive height, crossing his arms, confidence plastered on his face. “Prove it.”
Damn. My first weekend night, not even a full one, and already the life I’d earned, had fought and bled for, had begun to slip through my fingers.
Disappointment seeped heavy into my chest. What naïve people got for having hope.
The inborn fight in me remained. Pride too. With every tightening breath, fury burned my lungs, for being judged without cause.
“No. You either believe me…or you don’t. I filled out my application. Gave my ID then. Got interviewed. Got hired. And I’ve proved myself over the last few days, tonight. Ask anyone here.”
“Doesn’t matter.”
But it did. My actions mattered to me. They were all my life had been based on. Everything I’d ever accomplished had been from what I had done—not who I was, what anyone thought, or what society believed.
I crossed my arms too, refusing to bend, by principle, if not more.
His expression hardened.
Commotion grew around us, two immovable blocks of granite, as thirsty patrons called out for drinks. Cade steadfastly remained beside me. While the poor lone fresh-shift guy hustled ass to fill orders.
The atmosphere grew charged between Ben and me. The sounds of the club faded to background noise as my heart thumped harder against my ribs, my pulse drummed louder in my ears.
Ben planted his hands on the bar again, staring me down as he leaned forward inch by inch. His eyes bored deep into mine, penetrating. Any other girl might’ve thought intimidating.
I didn’t twitch a muscle.
He towered over the bar, head lowered, a ferocious wolf who’d cornered an unknown threat. That shaggy dark hair spiked over darker piercing eyes. Unshorn scruff peppered an unforgiving jaw. An unhidden snarl curled his lip, baring white teeth.
No resemblance to the wholesome happy guy I’d spied on in the pictures hanging on his office wall.
Oddly, more attractive.
Most women would’ve gone weak in the knees. Some would’ve put on a layer of flirt, feigning vulnerability or exposing true fear, hoping to snag the obvious alpha in spite of the glaring warning signs. Maybe because of them.
I’d never been a bleating sheep in my life, wasn’t about to pretend with fluffy false clothing.
Wolf, too, buddy. I leaned forward, matching him inch for inch. My trim nails clicked on the bar top as I dug in, holding my ground.
Alpha all the way.

I am Comet Caldwell.
And I sort of, kind of, absolutely hate my name.
People expect extraordinary things from a girl named Comet. That she’ll be effortlessly cool and light up a room the way a comet blazes across the sky.
But from the shyness that makes her book-character friends more appealing than real people to the parents whose indifference hurts more than an open wound, Comet has never wanted to be the center of attention. She can’t wait to graduate from her high school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the only place she ever feels truly herself is on her anonymous poetry blog. But surely that will change once she leaves to attend university somewhere far, far away.
When new student Tobias King blazes in from America and shakes up the school, Comet thinks she’s got the bad boy figured out. Until they’re thrown together for a class assignment and begin to form an unlikely connection. Everything shifts in Comet’s ordinary world. Tobias has a dark past and runs with a tough crowd—and none of them are happy about his interest in Comet. Targeted by bullies and thrown into the spotlight, Comet and Tobias can go their separate ways…or take a risk on something extraordinary.

Excerpt By the time we got to the house and I let us into my bedroom, I was a jittering wreck. Massive waves of nervous energy were emanating from Tobias, making me worse. He was rarely nervous about anything. Once inside my room, I waited impatiently as Tobias slumped down on my bed, elbows on knees, head in hands.
I shrugged out of my jacket and unwound my scarf. Still waiting.
“Comet,” he huffed, not looking up. “Sit down, okay, you’re making me nervous.”
“You’re making me nervous.” I sat on the armchair across from him. “You and Stevie didn’t kill someone, did you? Did Dean dispose of the body for you and now he’s blackmailing you?”
Tobias’s broad shoulders shook and he lifted his head to stare at me with amusement tinged with sadness. “You’ve got to stop reading so many books.”
“Never.”
He smiled at me, his look so tender that I squirmed with the need to shoot across the room and throw my arms around him. Instead I met his gaze and asked directly, “What happened back there?”
“I just chose you over Stevie,” he said.
I swear my eyebrows must have hit my hairline at this pronouncement. “What?”
“Stevie and some of the guys have been hanging around Dean more and more. Dean is a dealer. And he’s part of something bigger—we’re talking an adult-sized, criminal gang who deal drugs and steal cars for a living. Dean deals cocaine to kids. Blair Lochrie High School is one of his grounds. He sells to quite a few kids there.”
At our high school?
Class A drugs at our high school?
“Bloody hell,” I whispered, “Where have I been?”
“Where I prefer you—safe with your nose stuck in a book.”
“Tobias…Stevie?”
Hearing the worry in my voice, he winced. “I tried, Com. I tried to keep him out of it, but he’s so messed up and I couldn’t stop him. I hung around to make sure he was okay.”
“Is that why you’ve been avoiding me?” God, please let that be why he was avoiding me.
“Yes.” A million apologies swirled in his gorgeous eyes. “I didn’t mean for Stevie to find out about you, because I didn’t want you anywhere near the stuff he was getting involved in. But then you two got along, so well I thought you might…have feelings for each other, so I told him that he either stopped hanging around Dean or he stopped hanging around you. He agreed keeping you out of that stuff, away from the boys, was better for you. So we stopped coming around as much and then stopped coming around at all. Tonight was his initiation into Dean’s crew. It was supposed to be both our initiations, I guess, because Dean was sending Stevie to some other party with drugs, and I was following Stevie as backup. Now I’m not.”
There was so much to process in what he’d just said.
My brain blurted out the first thing it wanted to deal with. “Stevie and I don’t have feelings for each other. I don’t like Stevie, Tobias.”
His eyes widened as my tone implied that I liked someone else. “No?”
“No.”
“Good. Because I just left him to that hell.” He stood up and started pacing back and forth. “I tried to help him even if it meant hurting you, and he just let himself get pulled further down into that crap.”
I stood up, reached out to touch him, to slow him down. He stilled, looking at my hand on his arm. “What did you mean? You chose me over Stevie?”
“Comet, Dean made it clear that if I left with you, I couldn’t go around there or anywhere near him again. So I either had to stay and go with Stevie as his backup on a drug deal and leave you to handle Dean on your own, or I could walk out of there with you and leave Stevie to do it alone. For good.” His gaze moved over my face, as if he were committing each feature to memory.
My heart started thudding so hard the blood rushed through my ears. “So you chose me.”
“Of course,” he choked out. “I’d never let anything happen to you. And seeing you there…I never want to see that crap touch you again. It was a wake-up call for me. I don’t want to be a part of that shit either. That’s not me.”
Seeing something in his expression made me brave in a way I never thought I could be. Knees trembling, I stepped up to him and placed a hand on his chest, over his heart. His chest was strong and hard beneath my hand, his body heat surrounding me and that woodsy, spicy, citrusy scent he wore teasing my senses. I wanted to sway into him, hold him tight, and never let go, but I had something important to say first now that I had his absolute attention. “Being a good student, working for something, achieving something, playing hard at football…it wasn’t all for your dad, Tobias. There is no maybe about it. Deep down you want those things for yourself, too. You’re smart and good and such a special person.” I gave him a tremulous smile, wondering if how I felt for him was as obvious to him as it was to apparently everyone else. “You deserve the life you really want.”
His chest rose and fell faster beneath my hand as we stared into one another’s eyes. Tobias licked his lips, as if he was nervous. “What if I want to get my grades back up?”
“Then I’ll help.”
“And join the rugby team?”
“Then you’ll try out.”
He nodded and slowly lifted his hand to cover mine. He took a step closer to me, his breathing sounding a little shaky. The thud of his heart racing beneath my palm made mine accelerate. My legs shook and my fingers curled into Tobias’s shirt. “And…what if what I really want…is you?”
Joy flooded me. I can’t truly describe the feeling. The euphoria. The excitement and thrill and fear and worry that cascaded through me at the thought of being with Tobias King.
No matter the plethora of emotions that came with his question, my answer was instant and absolute. “Then you have me.”

Synopsis JADE
Twenty-four hours.
A no-strings-attached adventure with the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen—this was my alcohol-slash-lust-fueled proposal, and given before I could consider the potential ramifications. While his looks alone are enough to make a girl swoon, it’s the rest of him—a perfect balance of mysterious, sweet, and effortlessly charming—that draws me in. Through his cryptic comments and half-answers, he’s quickly become an enigma I’m determined to solve.
One way or another, this adventure promises to snap the stagnant, lackluster pattern my love life has been locked in lately. Is it naïve and a little reckless to think this won’t blow up in my face? Probably. But the bigger question is the only one I need to answer…Is the chance to soar among the stars worth the risk of being burned when the sun eventually rises?
EMMETT
Love is a mistake I won’t make again.
My rules are simple. Keep things surface-deep. Don’t make plans. And never, ever get attached. One look at her is all it takes for me to break my first rule. One conversation with her is all it takes for me to question everything. Which means accepting her proposal is bound to be a mistake.
She has no idea who I am or what kind of demons I live with, so I tell myself there’s no harm in spending one day with her. But the more I lose myself in her, the more she brings me out of the darkness and into her light, the harder it’ll be to let her go. When reality comes crashing down on us in the worst way possible, I have to decide between walking away…or risking everything for the woman who breaks all of my rules.

Excerpt “Am I crazy?” I asked, turning to face Jas. I texted her an SOS half an hour ago while I was buying goods to bribe her awake with, then I let myself into her apartment and woke her up with coffee and a chocolate-filled croissant. I wasn’t even convinced she’d be sober yet, but I had tossed and turned all night, weighing my options, so letting her sleep in wasn’t high up on my priority list.
I knew what I should do. But the problem was what I should do and what I knew I was going to do were not the same, and I needed to justify why I was about to spend twenty-four hours with a man I barely knew. (Side note: does there need to be any more justification other than the sex appeal practically pouring off him with every single breath he takes? Nope. Not for a reasonable, straight female who appreciates a hot man when she sees one.)
I sat on the edge of Jasmine’s bed, twisting my hands nervously, finally quiet for the first time since bursting into her apartment fifteen minutes ago. I’d blabbed ninety miles a minute, going back over the events of last night and verbally weighing out the pros and cons.
“First of all, bless you for bringing me the elixir of the gods,” she called from underneath her covers. “Also for speaking in soft tones. As far as the whole twenty-four hours with Emmett, you’d be crazy not to go. You did see how stupidly hot he is, right? Shit, if you don’t wanna do it, I will. I could definitely find a way to pass the time with him.”
I glared daggers at her. “Not funny. But seriously, if I’m doing this, you’re going to have to get your ass out of bed and help me pack an overnight bag because I’ve got,” I paused, checking my phone for the time, “twenty-one minutes before I have to leave.”
Jasmine’s eyes flew open and she quickly assessed my appearance. I’d opted for a casual look with a loose-fitting soft pink top and black shorts over my bikini (because hopefully meeting at the lake actually entailed getting in the lake), and just the bare minimum of makeup.
She balked, sitting up and easing out of bed with her eyes trained on me. “Please tell me those are just your coffee run clothes.”
I shrugged. “We’re meeting at the lake. Plus, it’s not like I had a whole lot of direction about what we’ll be doing today. I don’t even know if he’s thought about it.”
I’d been too busy ping-ponging back and forth with indecision about going to meet him to consider today’s agenda. Though, our day together should include seeing Emmett shirtless again…because damn. His body was made for being on display.
“Oh, please,” she deadpanned. “He’s thought about today. Did you not see how he was looking at you last night? I know I was heavily intoxicated, but he was studying you like you were the subject of a final exam and he was desperate for an A.”
I shook my head, half in disbelief and halfway as a last-ditch effort to keep my hopes from soaring through the roof. I’d known since sometime around seven, when I finally gave up the idea of sleep, I’d be going through with the twenty-four-hour non-relationship madness, but I also had to remind myself today was all there was.
Twenty-four hours. No strings. No tomorrow.

Synopsis Thorn
From the first time I played army as a kid, the military has been my life. As an Airborne Major, I’d led my men through two tours in Afghanistan. But when my father was elected president, I became an even greater target for the enemy—a prize for someone to take out. To ensure not only the safety of myself, but of my men, I got stripped of my cammies, shoved into an Armani suit, and placed into a management position at my father’s company. After years of trekking through the desert with an assault rifle, I was way out of my area of expertise, which my transition coordinator was more than happy to let me know on a daily, if not hourly basis. The brunette bombshell would be the death of me in more ways than one, especially since I hadn’t been with a woman since my last deployment. She’s turning out to be one of the greatest foes I’ve ever done battle with.

In the backwoods Georgia town I was born in, you either married right out of high school or got the hell out of town. I chose the second and never looked back. After graduating top in my class, I started working for The Callahan Corporation. Fast forward five years and I was about to become the youngest female manager in the history of my department. And then all the blood, sweat, and tears I’d put into my career were for nothing when the boss’s billionaire son was handed my position on a silver platter. Not only that, I was expected to help transition him into the job that was supposed to be mine. Sure, he’s easy on the eyes with his chiseled good-looks and impossibly built physique, but I’m not going to let that distract me. I hope soldier boy is good at military strategy because sabotage is the name of the game I’ll be playing.

Welcome to the blog tour for THE DISTILLER’S DARLING, the second book in the adult romantic suspense series, River Hill, by USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Norinne and Jamaila Brinkley. See below for information on the book and series, buy links, an exclusive teaser, and details on her giveaway.
THE DISTILLER’S DARLING (River Hill #2) by Rebecca Norinne and Jamaila Brinkley
Synopsis Irish whiskey royalty has no place in Northern California, but that wasn’t going to stop Iain Brennan, the black sheep of Brennan Family Distillers, from giving it a shot. Wine Country is an unlikely place to launch a whiskey empire, but Iain’s just reckless enough to make it work. And being out from under the watchful eye of his disapproving father back home in Dublin? Even better.
Naomi Klein has spent the last ten years ignoring her society family as much as possible while building a career as a renowned sculptor. She’s found a home in River Hill, but has no interest in dipping her toes into the commitment pool. Just the idea of forever gives her hives. Which makes a rootless Irish wanderer the perfect fling. And shocking her mother? Just a bonus.
But as cozy autumn nights turn into lazy winter mornings, Naomi and Iain realize that they’re getting close to something neither of them wants: love. When Naomi discovers Iain’s not quite as rootless as he seems, she’ll have to make some tough decisions. And when the Brennans and the Kleins descend en masse to collect their prodigal children, River Hill may never be the same.

Excerpt #2 “Thank you for doing this,” Iain said, the pad of his index finger tracing over the design Naomi had created for Whitman’s Revival. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure I’d hear from you again. You kind of ghosted me.”
He glanced up in time to catch her looking away guiltily. “Yeah, about that—”
“I’m not asking you to explain yourself. I get it. We had some fun, and now it’s time to move on.”
Naomi’s eyes came back around, the guilt replaced with what Iain thought looked a whole lot like contemplation. “Funny you should mention that.”
“Funny how?”
“I was thinking,” she said, her finger swirling a pattern on the table that separated them. “You’re leaving in two months, and it would be a shame if we didn’t spend that time … hanging out.” Her eyes bored into his, as if daring him to misunderstand.
His lips quirked up into a smirk. “Why, Miss Klein, are you asking me to fuck you senseless until I board a plane back to Ireland?”
She tossed him a wicked smile full of promise. “You have to admit; we’re pretty damn good at it.”
“The best,” he agreed.
He felt his chest sawing in and out as his breathing became deeper and more labored. Iain couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt such heady anticipation. Oh, wait, yes, he could. It was that night in San Francisco when he and Naomi had practically run from that dive bar to his hotel. He’d been so ready for her that he’d ripped her dress off before the door to his room had locked behind them.
“So, what do you say, Brennan? You want to spend the next sixty days seeing how many orgasms we can give each other?”
That was all the invitation Iain needed. Abruptly, he stood, his chair scraping over the black-and-white-checked linoleum and then crashing to the floor. He stalked around the fifties-style diner table and fisted his hands in Naomi’s hair. He bent at the waist and let his lips hover scant centimeters from her parted ones. He could feel the warmth of her breath mingling with his own. “What do you say we get started on that now?”
