Synopsis “Holly and Aiden broke up? Seriously? No way. Not those two.”
Dumped. No, not only dumped. Blindsided and dumped.
I thought that Aiden McManus was my forever, my soulmate. That was until he told me he was still in love with his ex. I didn’t want to believe him. So, I convinced myself that our break-up was because of his upcoming deployment, and not because he didn’t love me. Believing that, helped me get through those first months.
But after a while, I realized I just might be lying to myself. And it was time to move on…
So, I moved on. Or tried to move on, anyway. But that didn’t work out so well for me, either. And it practically got me disowned from my family. After that, I finally started to get my life back together, I had everything back under control…Or so I thought.
Until I found out Aiden was back
And now he’s everywhere I turn, Still pushing me away, telling me he doesn’t want me. But every time he calls me Angel or reaches out to touch my cheek,I know what he’s not admitting to himself – He still loves me.
And I’m going to prove it to him.
Excerpt #1 “Did you hear back from Holly?”
Picking up his phone from the car’s center console and glancing at the screen, Schooner shook his head. He had left her a voice message and a text to let her know what was going on and that he and Mia were on their way back into the city and staying at the loft for the night.
“No. She must be out or have her phone turned off. Maybe she’s at the movies with some friends,” he conjectured.
Heartbroken, Holly had decided not to spend the summer at the beach house on Fire Island with the family, knowing that seeing her ex-boyfriend, even for one more day, in the small, beach enclave where they lived and worked, would be far too painful. Instead, she moved back into the city, where she was very fortunate, that late in spring, to be able to pick up a summer gig at NYU, teaching two classes of English as a Second Language.
Aiden McManus, the charismatic and handsome manager of Maguire’s Restaurant on Fire Island had captured Holly’s heart, lock, stock and barrel, several summers before. A Long Island boy from a working-class family, Aiden helped pay for his community college education in Hotel and Hospitality Management through enlisting in the New York Army National Guard.
Holly’s previous love interests had all come from backgrounds similar to her own, well-educated at Ivy League schools with families of means. But Aiden was different, salt of the Earth and willing to get his hands dirty, Holly had never met anyone his age who was already a man. Aiden McManus definitely wasn’t a boy, and that was the sexiest thing Holly Moore had ever encountered. There was no going back to boys after meeting Aiden McManus.
Prior to meeting, neither Aiden nor Holly would have ever seen themselves with the other, yet together they were a mutual adoration society. Holly enamored with this handsome, street-smart man’s man and Aiden overwhelmed that this beautiful and brilliant California golden girl would even give him a second glance, nonetheless fall in love with him. And when she fell in love with the dark-haired, dark hazel-eyed Irishman, Holly fell hard, with her entire heart, her feelings deeper and more complex than she’d ever known.
Their break-up blindsided and devastated her. Coming just a month before Aiden’s reserve deployment to Afghanistan, his harsh words tattered her heart, literally slamming her to her knees.
“Don’t bother waiting for me, Holly. This is the perfect natural-ending point for us. We’re just too different. So, please don’t kid yourself and wait.”
“You’re just saying this in case something happens. You’re trying to protect me, Aiden,” countered Holly.
Shaking his head, his eyes never leaving hers as he delivered the killing blow, “I’m sure that makes it easier for you to handle, but the truth of the matter is, I’ve been wanting to end things for a while. We’re really different. And I’m happier with a woman who’s more like me. I’ve been thinking a lot about my old girlfriend, Janine, and I’d like to see if we can work things out.”
Holly wasn’t the only one shocked by Aiden’s scathing declaration. Everyone who knew the couple couldn’t believe not only that they had broken up, but how and why or that Aiden would ever treat Holly with such cruelty.
“I don’t understand,” she cried to her father and stepmother. “How could I be so blind to miss the signs?” She glanced from Schooner to Mia, her tear-stained eyes positively devastated. But neither had an answer for her, because they were as shocked as she was at the sudden one-hundred-eighty-degree turn in Aiden’s feelings and intentions. It just didn’t add up. There had been no signs.

Synopsis “The anticipation and slow burn of Parker and Finn’s relationship is electric…[an] absorbing novel that will appeal to fans of Rainbow Rowell.” —Booklist
Parker struggles to reconnect with her twin brother, Charlie—who’s recovering from cancer—as she tries to deal with her anxiety about the future in this powerful new novel.
Twins Parker and Charlie are polar opposites.
Where Charlie is fearless, Parker is careful.
Charlie is confident while Parker aims to please.
Charlie is outgoing and outspoken; Parker is introverted and reserved.
And of course, there’s the one other major difference: Charlie got cancer. Parker didn’t.
But now that Charlie is officially in remission, life couldn’t be going better for Parker. She’s landed a prestigious summer internship at the hospital and is headed to Harvard in the fall to study pediatric oncology—which is why the anxiety she’s felt since her Harvard acceptance is so unsettling. And it doesn’t help that her relationship with Charlie has been on the rocks since his diagnosis.
Enter Finn, a boy who’s been leaving strange graffiti messages all over town. Parker can’t stop thinking about those messages, or about Finn, who makes her feel free for the first time: free to doubt, free to make mistakes, and free to confront the truth that Parker has been hiding from for a long time.
That she keeps trying to save Charlie, when the person who really needs saving is herself.
Guest Post In my new book Letting Go of Gravity, my main character Parker struggles with anxiety, even though she doesn’t quite know what’s going on until the end of the book. As someone who also has a hard time getting out of her own head, like Parker, I’ve discovered a few ways to help manage my busy mind. Here are some of the tricks Parker and I have used to calm ourselves:
Immerse yourself in the words of others. For Parker, it’s listening to Taylor Swift. For me, it’s finding a book that I can lose myself in. Sometimes, the mere act of letting yourself spend time with other voices is enough to give your worried mind a break.
Get busy. In my book, Parker starts helping out at a local ceramics shop, working with a group of old women while discovering the joy of making things with her own two hands. For me, it’s writing and being a reading buddy at a local elementary school. Creating and volunteering are both great ways of slowing the worry train, letting your mind focus on other avenues.
Be kind to yourself. It’s very easy to be mad at yourself when you’re anxious. You know that you’re not thinking rationally, but that doesn’t stop the anxious thoughts. But being mad at yourself doesn’t help you feel better—in fact, it makes Parker (and me) feel worse. Instead of being hard on yourself, be kind. You can’t always stop the thoughts, but you can at recognize that anxiety is hard and you’re doing the best you can.
Talk to your friends and family. Throughout the book, Parker’s new friends Ruby and Finn encourage her to talk about her feelings, and it’s only when she starts to tell people that she’s worried and scared that things start to get better. I’ve found that being open about my worried thoughts with people I trust—my family, my best friends, my therapist—is often the first step toward owning and overcoming my anxiety.
Know that it’s okay to seek help. It takes Parker a long time (a whole book!) to recognize she needs help in managing her worry. It took me twenty-plus years. More than anything, I hope that anyone who sees a little or a lot of themselves in Parker knows it’s okay to ask for help, whether it’s from a teacher, trusted adult, therapist, or good friend. Anxiety can be a hard road, but having someone on your side can make the journey a lot easier.
I hope you enjoy Letting Go of Gravity, and if you’re anxious too, please know you’re not alone—Parker and I are both with you.

SHOPPING FOR A CEO’S HONEYMOON (Shopping for a Billionaire #14) by Julia Kent
Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling romantic comedy series continues in Shopping for a CEO’s Honeymoon as Andrew and Amanda settle in to married life… and so much more.
Excerpt #1 Amanda
Our home looks like the set for Extreme Home Makeover, except there’s no bus to move and all of the workmen act like I’m invisible as I wander downstairs after waking up naked in an empty bed.
I throw on clothes and am down the stairs when I spot my husband.
“What is going on?” I ask Andrew, who is huddled over blueprints with some guy who looks like he runs a union hall in South Boston. Tight eyes, distrustful look, goatee, and an intensity that makes it clear you want him on your side.
Andrew breaks away, kisses my cheek, and gives me a saucy half grin. “Just like you wanted. Here we go.”
“Here we go what? We barely talked about what we wanted!”
“We did,” he says, suddenly defensive. “In bed,” he whispers.
“What I want in bed has nothing to do with tile colors and three-season sunrooms!” I say.
“The guys aren’t working on anything like that,” he hisses as a few workmen suppress smiles. “We’re putting in new backup systems.”
“Backups for what?”
“Power outages. Acts of God. Hurricanes. Bomb cyclones that leave six feet of snow.”
I snort. “What, no alien contingency plan? Got a blueprint for a universal extraterrestrial language translator in there?”
Andrew reddens and avoids eye contact.
I frown. “Andrew?” I grab his arm and pull him aside, his muscles tense. “What are you doing? This isn’t how I envisioned remodeling and spending our honeymoon. For one, we didn’t have sex that second time this morning.”
He looks at the clock. “It’s only 7:53. Plenty of time for that.” He grabs me at the waist and pulls me close, trying to divert me with a kiss.
“We’ve got the geothermal heat unit figured out, and when we redo the gutter system and the roof, in addition to the solar panels, we’ve got an evaporation system set up for clean water collection. Storage is next,” he says to me.
“All that in the first hour of work?” I’m stunned.
“I’m efficient. Two weeks of my focused attention is like five years of a normal human being’s time.”
“Efficient and humble. I love that in a man.”
“You’d better, because you’re stuck with me forever.”
“Is that a threat or a promise?”
I get a pat on the ass in response.

Welcome to the blog tour for A LOT LIKE PERFECT, the second book in the adult contemporary/military romance series, SEALS of Superstition Springs, by USA Today bestselling author, Kat Cantrell. See below for information on the book and series, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
A LOT LIKE PERFECT (SEALs of Superstition Springs #2) by Kat Cantrell
Synopsis From USA Today Bestseller Kat Cantrell comes a sweet small town romance series with a touch of magic.
What kind of man falls for the woman meant for his buddy?
Navy SEAL Isaiah West has trouble calling himself “former” military, but after an involuntary discharge, redefining himself is the only option. The small town of Superstition Springs seems as good a place as any to regroup while he figures out where he’s supposed to go next—and deal with how that last operation in Syria messed up his place on the team.
Aria Nixon has long accepted her role as the “plain” sister and really, she has no use for a man who only sees her looks anyway. So when her Aunt Serenity’s love prediction mentions the word “makeover,” it’s game on to prove she can get noticed without one. Who better to help her get the inside track on how a man thinks than…a man? Isaiah specifically, who has his own prediction to sidestep.
But in a mystical place like Superstition Springs, nothing ever goes as expected. It turns out Isaiah and Aria have a lot in common, and what’s with the attraction between them? Not supposed to happen. She can’t fall for Isaiah. He’s too perfect, too much what she wasn’t looking for and too likely to break her heart when he leaves. And Isaiah isn’t about to admit he’s got feelings for the woman he’s supposed to be helping attract an entirely different guy—his teammate. They should stay friends. Right?
Welcome to Superstition Springs, town in progress…SEALs of Superstition Springs is a clean and wholesome series starring heroes you can share!
Excerpt 1 “This is a freebie, strictly to win the bet,” Isaiah said. “Your sisters are going down. We cannot lose. I’ll be like Donkey, Shrek’s trusted sidekick. Right by your side to help complete the quest with no thought to my own personal safety as we traverse a hostile countryside in search of the dragon’s castle.”
The look Aria gave him brought him up short and he trailed off. Okay. Not on board with the Shrek metaphor. Maybe she’d never even seen the movie and plus, it was a cartoon. Probably he should have picked something more manly, like Lord of the Rings, another personal favorite. A quest was a quest.
“Before you get too far into this,” Aria said just as he opened his mouth to backtrack. “You should know there will be no makeovers like in the second movie. What you see is what you get. There will be no magic potions turning me into the non-ogre form of Fiona.”
Isaiah had to grin. “She never drank a potion. It was Shrek who got a makeover from the potion. Besides, I would never do that, mostly because I’m not into winning that way. But also because you don’t need any magic potions. You’re going to win because you’re you, and Tristan will be thrilled to have the Aria that you are right now.”
Color climbed through her face again in the most interesting barometer of her feelings and he liked having that tell. His compliment had pleased her. He wanted to do it again.
“I’ve seen all four of the Shrek movies at least ten times,” she said and he had the distinct impression she’d veered away from the subject of Marchande on purpose. “So I know the fairy godmother changed Fiona back into her human form. I’m just trying to go along with your point and also make it clear that there will be no new hairdo or anything.”
“Really? Ten times?”
He’d probably seen them all twenty times. But there was a lot of downtime when you were a SEAL waiting for deployment. The other guys preferred to read or watch depressing shows like Game of Thrones, but he’d had enough violence in his day job that he didn’t like it in his entertainment. Lord of the Rings notwithstanding since the violence was mostly toward the bad guys.
She shrugged. “The Shrek movies are great. The real question is why you picked that as the theme for our…association. Whatever you want to call it.”
What, like an almost thirty-year-old man couldn’t like cartoons? He bristled. “There’s nothing wrong with Shrek. It’s a quest movie. A twist on regular fairy tales.”
Defensive much? He hadn’t even touched on how it had this element of hope that had always resonated with him. If things could work out for an ogre, the same might be true of an orphan who’d never known a solid home for more than a few months at a time. He hadn’t seen the movies as a kid. It was only as an adult that he’d found the DVD in a pile of others at the base one day and the strange title plus the odd looking green monster on the cover had intrigued him enough to see what it was about.
“Oh, I know. That’s one of the things I like about it. I just meant that you’re more like Shrek, going on a quest to find the princess on behalf of the king. You said you were going to be like Donkey. I was just thinking that if you intend to be the annoying talking sidekick, maybe I should reevaluate this whole thing.”
His shoulders relaxed as he laughed. “Point taken. I’ll be more like Shrek, the delivery boy.”
“You’ve seen those movies more than once.” Her smile widened as she punched him companionably in the arm. “Don’t try to deny it.”

TRUTH OR DARE (Playing With Fire #1) by Anne Conley (Full Cover)
Excerpt “Hi,” he began. “I have a favor to ask.”
She raised her eyebrows and smiled vaguely, exposing a tiny gap in her teeth which only made her more attractive with the tiny imperfection.
“I’m here with my friends, and one of their girlfriends is trying to mess with me. I was about to leave when she dared me to kiss a woman here. And then I saw you.” Her brows furrowed in confusion, but he saw the pulse in her neck pick up speed. When she absently licked her lips, he sat next to her. “Let me kiss you to get them off my back, then I’ll buy you a drink and walk away.”
She took a deep breath but didn’t say anything. Her eyes searched his face, landing on his lips, then going back to his eyes, probably gauging his honesty.
“I promise I’m not playing with you. Look over there.”
Jude turned his head to follow her eyes as she looked over his shoulder at his friends. Joey raised his drink with a goofy smile on his face, and Simone narrowed her eyes on a huff. Zane just watched over the rim of his drink, a twinkle in his eyes. Logan was still nowhere to be found. Jude sighed.
“See?” He turned back to her to find her watching him intently. “So … what do you say? May I kiss you? You don’t have to see me again, promise.” It occurred to him maybe that was a deal breaker for her, but he wasn’t really willing to make promises he didn’t plan on keeping just for a stupid game.
But as he watched her decide, he got a little lost in her green eyes, the color of frosty sage leaves after a morning dew. “You have gorgeous eyes. I bet men tell you that all the time.”
She snapped out of her trance. “Thank you. Yes.” Her voice was low and husky, sending a shock of lust straight to his balls.
He rested his hand on her leg, the desire to touch those soft curves overriding all common sense. “Yes, what? Guys say that a lot?”
Her smile widened, and Jude lost all the air in his lungs. God, she was breathtaking. “Yes, you can kiss me.”
Jude smiled and scooted his chair closer to her. He was about to kiss a random stranger in a bar on a dare, but as he gripped her braid and brought her face closer to his, he didn’t give a flying fuck. He wanted to taste those glistening lips. STAT.
He closed his eyes as he brushed his lips across hers, and then sensations took over everything. Warmth, softness, her subtle floral scent, her fingers trailing up his chest and winding around his neck, the tiny gasp she expelled. Something foreign and totally feral welled up inside him and roared approval.

Welcome to the blog tour for ROCK LEGEND, the second book in the adult contemporary rock star romance series, Nothing But Trouble, by Tara Leigh. See below for information on the book and series, buy links, and an exclusive excerpt.
ROCK LEGEND (Nothing But Trouble #2) by Tara Leigh
Synopsis Fans of Kristen Callihan, L.J. Shen, and Kylie Scott will scream for this sizzling bad boy rock star romance!
I’m no Prince Charming.
Most people know me as the drummer for Nothing but Trouble. Depending who you ask, I’m also a playboy, a loner, the life of the party, a screw-up, or according to my fans, “The Sexiest Rock Star on the Planet.” Apparently, I’m a legend.
Am I surprised? Hell, no. It’s a reputation I’ve earned behind my drum kit and behind closed doors. No one thought foster kid Landon Cox would become famous. Infamous, maybe. Notorious, probably. But successful? Never. No one except Piper Hastings. But I had to make a choice: my woman or my career. I picked fame and fortune… and spent every damn day since pretending I don’t regret it.
Now fate’s dropped Piper back into my life. I want to believe it’s a second chance for me – for us. But while I can give her a few great nights, I can’t give Piper a future.
Because there’s a difference between a legend and a fairy tale…
Only one of them ends happily ever after.
Excerpt Piper Hastings.
Shock rippled through me, my heart pounding against my ribs.
Not quite a full head shorter than me, Piper’s blonde hair fell to her shoulders, like sunshine that had been spun into silk. Those fathomless blue eyes I hadn’t seen in six years—except for the countless nights they’d haunted my dreams—went from surprise to horror in seconds as she took a reflexive step back, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
I fought an urge to close the distance between us, hard. Shoving my hands into my pockets, I somehow managed to resist the itch to plow them through Piper’s hair, to wrap those golden strands in my fists as I plundered her lips.
Judging from the animosity clinging to her skin a shadow, I had no doubt she would sooner bite my tongue off than kiss me back. “You enjoy the show, Piper?”
One shoulder lifted in a dismissive shrug. “Your fans seemed satisfied.”
I grunted at the insinuation that Piper wasn’t one of them. “We aim to please.”
The perimeter of blue wrapped around her pupils brightened, flashing at me like a warning sign. “No one more than yourself, I’m sure.”
Piper may as well have waved a red flag at a bull. That spark inside her—it sure as hell wasn’t indifference. Proof she still felt something for me kindled hope inside my chest, triggering a throaty growl. “Once upon a time, I pleased you.”
Piper took another step back. “Once upon a time? You might want to hold off on the fairytale comparisons. You’re no Prince Charming, Landon.”
She was right, of course. Gallant, I was not. Never wanted to be either. I’d grown a thick skin early in life, and the only one who’d ever gotten under it, burrowing way down deep, was Piper.
“Actually,” I said, extending my arms out in either direction. “Haven’t you heard? I’m a fucking legend.”
She leveled an icy glare my way. “You’re a fucking asshole.”
One corner of my lips quirked up. Fire and ice, my Pippa. “That, too.”

Excerpt “Three days is all you could wait to see me again?” I feigned confidence to hide my surprise at the sight of the angel warrior in the lobby of Hamerstein and Associates. What in the dickens is he doing here?
And why the hell did he look like he just walked off a runway? Hands shoved in his pockets. A suit that hung on his broad frame like it was made for him. Dark hair mussed by the wind.
But those eyes…shrewd, yet pleasure evident in them as I approached. My heart stuttered, but my strides were fluid instead of betraying the slight tremor in my legs.
“We weren’t properly introduced,” he said as he closed the distance between us.
“Ever consider there’s a reason for that?”
He grinned, and I looked down at my clothes to make sure they hadn’t evaporated on the spot. Lord knew I felt like ripping them off.
“You don’t strike me as a runner.”
What the hell? Maybe I didn’t work out religiously—okay, at all—but I was in damn good shape. I lifted my chin. “Well, you strike me as a stalker.”
His eyes danced, but his mouth quirked down as if the accusation was a foreign one and he didn’t quite know what to do with it.
“Would you believe I happened to be in the neighborhood? Wanted to hear that Southern drawl again?”
“Not a chance.” I lifted my chin, and his eyes raked down the column of my neck. I flexed my fingers so as not to touch the skin where his look had singed me. I couldn’t do this. Feel whatever this was. “You’ve said hello. Now, I have work to do.”
I spun, and he caught me by the elbow. His breath on my ear raised every hair on my body. “See. A runner.”
Was he insinuating I was a coward? I whirled back around to set him straight and immediately regretted it. His face was inches from mine. I held my breath to keep from burying my nose in his suit. No one should smell that good. Not without a warning.
“I hope this isn’t your usual approach with women.”
Fuck him and that gorgeous smile. It lit his whole face and made him even more impossibly handsome.
“They usually approach me.”
I rolled my lips together. “That explains a lot.”
“Don’t you want to know why I’m here?” His voice was so low that I leaned in closer to hear him. Another mistake. I was too close, all in his personal space.
“You want a proper introduction.” I thrust my hand out, creating some distance. “Vivian DeGraw. Though you already know that. Now goodbye.”
His fingers clasped my hand and squeezed. He didn’t shake, just held me in place. “Daniel Elliott. And this most definitely isn’t goodbye.”

QUIT YOUR PITCHIN’ (There’s No Crying in Baseball #2) by Lani Lynn Vale
She means those words to be directed toward the woman beside her, not him. But he can’t stop himself from answering. Not when her ass is the most magnificent thing he’s seen in his life.
Apparently, answering her with ‘not a damn thing’ wasn’t what she was expecting.
She likely wasn’t expecting the baseball she took to the face at his next at bat, either.
All it takes is one ill-fated foul ball, and George Hoffman, Lumberjacks center fielder, falls head over heels in love with Wrigley Field—and yes, that is her real name.
From that point forward, George and Wrigley fall into a fast whirlwind love that ends with them eloping to Vegas. And he has his potty mouth, titty bar owning, pain in the ass grandmother to thank for it.
Not that he’s complaining or anything.
Who wouldn’t want to be married to a woman that made his heart race like he was in the final game of the World Series?
The only problem is trying to convince her of that.

Synopsis A fast-paced fantasy romance with rich characters and immersive storytelling,Searching is the second book in theFading series by award-winning author Cindy Cipriano.
To say Leath is traveling light is an understatement. She’s only bringing three things on her trip. One is a silver heart locket—a gift from her longtime best-friend-turned-boyfriend Victor Santana. Next is a wedding token in the shape of a J, from James Turner. And of course, she’s packing her pistol. That’s it. She knows that when she leaves Woodvine, even her own mother may not remember her in the shifted reality that will be left behind. Bringing anything else would be pointless. But she’s driven now, by something that eclipses everything else, something she just got back: her memories. And now that she remembers James—she won’t stop searching until she finds him.
Guest Post Thanks for hosting me today on Adventures in Writing. I’m thrilled to be here to talk about the second book in my paranormal romance series Searching. I’ll also pass on some tips I’ve learned in my journey as an author. First, a little about Searching, which is the second book in The Fading Series.
Searching To say Leath is traveling light is an understatement. She’s only bringing three things on her trip. One is a silver heart locket – a gift from her long time best friend turned boyfriend, Victor Santana.
A fast-paced fantasy romance with rich characters and immersive story-telling, Searching is the second book in the Fading series by award-winning author Cindy Cipriano.
And, a reminder about book one in the series, Fading.
Fading Seventeen-year-old, Leath Elliott lives with her mother in the microscopic town of Woodvine, North Carolina. Leath’s father was killed in a tragic accident when she was fourteen, and her friend Victor Santana has been there for her every step of the way since. But the friendship starts to change when Victor develops deeper feelings for Leath. If that wasn’t complicated enough, newcomer James Turner, an emancipated minor with a dark past, wanders into her sights. Leath is captivated by him and wonders if he might be the boy of her dreams—literally.
The Fading Series – Insider Info (or as much as I can tell you) ☺
I often think of the series as the VLJ story. As in Victor-Leath-James.
Being in love is wonderful, heartwarming, and can leave you breathless. But, sometimes, it is so confusing! If you have ever loved two people at the same time, you can relate to what Leath is going through in The Fading Series. Although some readers have expressed their choice (Victor or James), many feel the way the same way Leath does; she loves them both.
Feeling Extra? Readers are often surprised to learn that one of the settings in The Fading Series is a real place. Judaculla Rock is a 2,000-3,000 year-old petroglyph located in western North Carolina. Several legends surround the origin of the rock as well as the images that are carved into its surface. I’ve had the opportunity to visit Judaculla Rock a few times and have really enjoyed incorporating this setting into Fading.
Which brings me to writing.
I’m often asked if I have any tips for new writers. The best suggestion I have is to join a critique group.
No, wait. Join one yesterday.
Learning how to give and receive thoughtful criticism will make your writing stronger. Writing is often an isolated endeavor. Being a part of a critique group helps foster a sense of community. It’s great having someone to turn to when you need to bounce ideas around. And, having a group discussion about your writing will help you see your story from a different perspective.
I’m also asked about the editing process. I’ll leave you with my best tip for editing.
Read your entire manuscript aloud. That really helps you notice mistakes and helps you smooth out the rough spots. If necessary, I suggest you record yourself as you read aloud the more difficult sections.

Synopsis MY DICK CAN BE A REAL BASTARD SOMETIMES.
When he takes charge, I’ve been known to do a lot of stupid shit, despite the fact that I have a genius IQ. Case in point: How I met the woman of my dreams.
Now, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I don’t regret that moment of idiocy one bit. It may have been one of the most embarrassing moments of my life, but you know what they say about first impressions, right? Well, I can guarantee that I made quite the impression that evening. (Don’t worry; I’ll tell you all the gory details later.)
Most days, she acts like she hates me—probably because I behave like an ass— but we both know the truth: Rainey O’Neil wants me just as much as I want her—she just doesn’t want to admit it.
Good thing I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge.
*Deal Takers is the second installment in the Dealing with Love world but can be read as a standalone.
Excerpt #2 If you would’ve told me a year ago that I’d be driving to the beach, my Suburban loaded with baby gear, I would’ve said that you were certified batshit. The kid’s not mine, but his stuff is taking up half the cargo area nonetheless. Drew appointed me chauffeur this weekend because I was the only one with a vehicle that could accommodate everything. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I’d pretty much give my left nut to spend more time with my favorite ginger, even if it’s just driving in the same car. Speaking of the birthday girl, I glance in the rearview and catch her staring at me. Again. She averts her eyes immediately and starts fussing over Drew’s nephew. We’ve been on the road for almost two hours and we’ve done this dance at least a dozen times. I smirk as my eyes roam down to her bouncing tits and I discreetly adjust the semi they’re causing.
“Damn it, Brody!” Rainey shouts as we hit a pothole. “I swear to God you’re doing that on purpose! How many friggin’ potholes can you hit today?”
Okay, I may be aiming for every rut that I can find. Lucky for me, the highway to the beach isn’t maintained very well. Also lucky for me? Rainey’s bra is not all that supportive.
“Why would I do that?”
“Because you exist to drive me crazy?” she suggests.
I laugh as I see her glaring at me in the mirror. “Aw sweetheart, if you’d stop denying how much you want me, I wouldn’t have to resort to playground behavior.”
She rolls her eyes. “You’re an ass.”
“What’s that? You like ass play? I’m game if you are, baby.”
Her cheeks redden. “That’s not what I said, you dick! Why are you such—?”
“Okay, you two,” Devyn interrupts. “Save the bickering for when there isn’t a child in the vicinity.”
Drew laughs. “He’s one-and-a-half. It’s not like he knows what anal is.”
About the Author Laura’s passion has always been storytelling. She spent most of her life with her nose in a book thinking of alternate endings or continuations to the story. She won her first writing contest at the ripe old age of nine, earning a trip to the state capital to showcase her manuscript. Thankfully for her, those early works will never see the light of day again!
Laura lives in the Pacific Northwest with her wonderful husband, two beautiful children, and three of the most poorly behaved cats in existence. She likes her fruit smoothies filled with rum, her cupboards stocked with Cadbury’s chocolate, and her music turned up loud. When she’s not writing or watching HGTV, she’s reading anything she can get her hands on. She’s a sucker for spicy romances, especially those involving vampires, bad boys, or cowboys!
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Kelly Elliott, is revealing an excerpt from BLIND LOVE, the fifth book in her adult contemporary romance series, Cowboys & Angels, releasing July 24, 2018. See below for information on the book and series, pre-order links, and the exclusive teaser.
BLIND LOVE (Cowboys and Angels #5) by Kelly Elliott
Synopsis Harley and I had our whole lives planned out, until her plans changed, and those plans didn’t include me.
After years spent trying to get the love of my life out of my head and repair my too-damaged heart, I thought I was finally moving on…but life sure has a funny way of letting you know when those best-laid plans are about to be turned upside down.
My entire world was rocked when Harley unexpectedly moved back to Oak Springs. Every miserable moment I’d spent trying to get over her and every hour I’d wasted trying to erase her from my life came back to haunt me the minute she walked into my office, fear in her eyes, and asked me for help. Would I…or better yet, could I walk away from her this time after all that she had put me through?
What I really needed to know is would I be able to forge ahead with the future I had so meticulously planned—one that didn’t include Harley—or will her return finally open my eyes to a future full of endless possibilities?
Blind Love is book five in the Cowboys and Angels series.
Excerpt Once I turned the corner I ran into something solid and knew I had spoken too soon.
“Harley? Darling, what are you doing?”
Taking a step back, I looked up into the deepest of blue eyes. They almost left me breathless.
John Parker. The man was the older image of all of his five sons. Handsome. Built. And a smile that made your knees week.
“Oh shit,” I mumbled.
“Hell, shit, fuck,” Chloe whispered next to me.
“Chloe Lynn!” John said.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
My eyes darted to Tripp.
Great. Just great.
“Oh hey. I was, um, just showing Chloe your new puppy.”
Tripp’s eyes about popped out of his head. Of course, the little rascal who had started all of this was standing next to me giggling.
“Ah. Come again?” Tripp asked.
“You got a dog, Tripp? That’s amazing,” John said as he turned and smiled big. “I’ve been telling him for years he needed a dog.”
I let out a nervous laugh. “Well, he’s got a cute one!”
“Wait. What?” Tripp said as he shot daggers at me.
“Who’s got a cute what?” Trevor asked, walking in behind Tripp and his father. Of course, the whole damn family would be walking through the very door I was trying to escape out of. We would have been better off going out the front door.
“Tripp’s got a new puppy!” Chloe called out as I hit her on the arm as a warning.
“Wait!” Tripp cried.
I panicked and did the only thing I could think of. I unwrapped the puppy and shoved it in Trevor’s face. When he was little he was a sucker for a cute puppy; I was hoping things hadn’t changed.
“Oh, my gosh! Look at this little guy,” Trevor said in a baby voice as he took the puppy from my hands.
“Great, you want him? He’s yours,” Tripp said.
“It’s a girl!” Chloe said with a clap of her hands. I hit her a few times to get her to take it back a few. We weren’t out of the woods yet.
“Aww, he’s so cute. Don’t worry, Tripp. I won’t steal your girl.” Trevor looked at me when he said that and winked, causing my cheeks to heat up.
“Now wait a second here,” Tripp started. I knew I had to cut him off.
“Tripp mentioned he wanted a hound dog, and when I saw this little girl in town, well, I had to get her.”
I could feel angry eyes on me, but I kept going.
“I mean, she was the last puppy and I felt so bad, I had to take her.” Looking at Tripp, I motioned with my head to Chloe, hoping he would catch on. “He was afraid y’all might be mad if she was in the house so I was fixin’ to take her to the barn.”
“What? Nonsense. Tripp, we don’t mind your puppy being in the house,” John stated.
“Hell, Patches is always in the house,” Trevor said with a deep rumbling laugh.
John sighed and lifted his cowboy hat to run his hand through his dark hair. A sigh of resignation escaped his lips.
“What’s her name, Tripp?” Trevor asked.
Chloe grabbed onto my hand and squeezed it hard as I held my breath.
It felt like forever before Tripp finally spoke. “Hemingway’s Whiskey. Hemi, for short.”
I pinched my brows together as I tried to figure out how in the hell he came up with that name off the top of his head. I knew it was a Kenny Chesney song, and Tripp liked his Kenny Chesney. But Hemi?
“What the hell kind of name is that for a girl?” Trevor asked.
Tripp forced a smile. “The moment I found out the dog was mine, I wanted to drink a fifth of whiskey.”

But it also had a way of rebuilding them.
I met a hero the day I walked into Klayton’s tattoo shop, broken and terrified. My heart was tattered, and my mental state was a plain of rubble in my skull. He wasn’t your typical hero. But atypical was exactly what I needed. I needed strength to combat my weaknesses. I needed love to fight my terror. And I needed someone to look at me like I was whole, when I feared I never would be again.
I sometimes wished we could have a do-over. That I could walk into his tattoo shop smiling, clean, and glowing. But that would only erase the brutal, beautiful truth of us. I didn’t walk into his tattoo shop smiling, I wasn’t clean, and I was severely damaged.
But Klayton loved me anyway. Even when I was empty, even when I was broken.

In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.
Excerpt Chapter Thirteen Jamie
I saw Emperor – looking like a hot air balloon, sounding as ridiculous as ever – blathering on about his personal Reichstag fire, and laying the blame of the explosion squarely at the feet of myself and my brothers-in-arms.
“…and it’s these traitors of the state – the threat to the security of my Empire of the United States of America – the defectors of the Cabal who go by Jamie Ryanand Basile Perrinault and, my greatest betrayal, Supreme Allied Commander Kanoa Shinomura…” he hollered into the microphone, which seemed to reverberate throughout the city.
At the sound of Kanoa’s name, the Cabal members below the balcony slammed the butts of their guns on the floor in rhythm. I knew that rhythm all too well – it was meant to be a war cry for those of us in the rank-and-file of the Cabal – but, to the untrained ear, it sounded like a machine gun going off…which was exactly the point.
But I couldn’t help but sneer at the accusation that the blast that nearly killed Evanora and Tommy was somehow our fault. He’d spent decades trying to catch us and failing miserably, yet in the same breath, believed we were inept enough to set off a blast that took no lives and could be cleaned up during a balmy New York evening. And he managed to sell this ridiculous belief to the crowd, no less.
“Let’s make something clear, asshole,” I muttered, “if it had been me and the boys that lit your shit up, you wouldn’t be standing here today.”
Despite the absurdity of the accusation – and despite the obvious absurdity of the accusation – the victims of psi just grunted along, agreeing with everything and anything that came out of Emperor’s mouth, in part because they didn’t know any better (they were psi victims, after all), and in part because any disagreement with what Emperor had to say was met with a fierce, painful punishment.
“His Word, Before All and Above All,” I muttered. “With liberty and justice for no one, so kiss my peasant Old New York ass and take a breath mint afterward, unless you like that funky aftertaste…”
My voice trailed off as my eyes focused on a strange woman on the balcony.
At first, I couldn’t discern who she was – she looked like someone I’d seen before, yet someone I’d never seen before.
Her hair was a garish white-blonde, stringy and lifeless, and pinned tightly behind her head with a set of black ceramic chopsticks. Her makeup was almost cartoonish – cat-like black eyeliner and matte black lipstick sat atop a ghostly white foundation. Even her outfit was a hideously hilarious cultural appropriation – a black silk kimono paired with a set of black stiletto heels. I’d seen Old New York 42nd Street prostitutes, with terrible heroin problems, sell the “Asian coquette” look better than what I’d seen before me now.
“Who the actual…” I began, hesitantly, unable to process who I was seeing before me.
And then it hit me, all at once, who she was.
For the first time in a long time, I was literally speechless.
When I could finally find my voice again, it barely came out in a whisper. “Rosie,” I squeaked.
I walked into the Ludlow Street apartment I shared with Angelique and was instantly greeted with the smell of a meat dish that, I would later learn, was calledcarne asada.
“Angelique!” I called out over the loud sizzling of steak as I kicked off my black Frye boots and set my matching acoustic guitar down. “Where are you, my love?”
“In here!” she called, out of sight, from the kitchen, where more clanging and banging sounds echoed over her voice.
I began walking through the apartment, shedding layers as I went along until I reached the kitchen wearing nothing but my black leather pants and a mischievous smile. I was hoping to have a little appetizer of crème d’Angelique before dinner, but when I reached the kitchen, I realized – much to my chagrin – that we weren’t alone.
Angelique, her hair tied back into a messy ponytail, was wearing a tight, white, see-through shorts jumper and a matching white apron. She was standing next to an unfamiliar-looking woman with a matching messy ponytail, but whose thick chocolate brown hair stood in sharp contrast to Angelique’s thin flaxen locks. The rest of her, too, was in stark contrast to Angelique, but not in a bad way – she was olive-skinned, in contrast to Angelique’s pale white skin; she was curvy, in contrast to Angelique’s ectomorphic figure; she was fiery, in contrast to Angelique’s ethereal nature.
They were standing side by side, working on something that smelled simply delicious. Angelique was mixing flour, sugar, and garlic powder, and her friend was adding melted butter and salted water to the resultant powder, then kneading it until it formed a dough.
“Am I interrupting something?” I asked as I walked behind Angelique, wrapped my arms around her waist, and kissed her neck, breathing in her scent of lilacs as I did so.
She smiled, then took her index finger and bopped the tip of my nose with the flour mixture. “Hey handsome,” she said, beatifically. “We’re making something special for you for dinner. We’ve got carne asada in the pan over there – we’ve got some arroz con gandules in the rice cooker – and we’re making…wait, girl, what’s this called?”
“Arepas,” her friend said, smiling as she continued to knead the dough between her hands, her silver thumb ring glistening in the light of the dusk as she did so.
“Right, arepas,” Angelique repeated. “Ramira here is teaching me all her magic ways – she says this is the exact dinner I need to make if I want my man to marry me.” She giggled, then elbowed Ramira, who giggled along with Angelique.
I couldn’t help but giggle, as well, as I unentwined myself from Angelique and walked over to Ramira to properly introduce myself. “I’m going to be stuffed fordays with all this delicious food, so it’s only right that we become friends,” I began, extending my hand. “Hi there. I’m James Randall Ryan IV, I somehow lucked out enough to convince this lovely lady Angelique to be my girlfriend, and it’s a pleasure to meet you. You can call me Jamie.”
Ramira smiled, then shook my hand with two of her fingers, taking care not to smear the wet dough across my palm. “Well, my name is Ramira Diaz, Angelique is my best friend, and it’s a pleasure to meet you too. You can call me Rosie, though. Everyone else does.”
I sat under a wilting star magnolia tree and stared, intently, through the open window of a room that had to be Rosie’s dressing room. She peeled her black silk kimono off and turned her back to the frameless window, exposing her prominent ribs and shoulder blades as she did so. The sight of her suddenly-bare, emaciated frame shocked me, especially given how pronounced her curves were in our younger years, and tears welled up in my eyes yet again.
In the decades since Angelique and my son had died, I could count the number of times I’d cried on one hand. In the past 72 hours, though – as I realized that my best friend’s kid, and my best friend’s girlfriend, were alive and well, and that the Uprising was bigger than I’d ever imagined – the tears came quickly and flowed easily, and I couldn’t decide if this was a sign of strength or weakness on my part.
Rosie slipped a shimmering white camisole over her emaciated frame, which she then tucked into a pair of white linen slacks. I couldn’t get over how thin she’d gotten, then wondered if this was by her own design, or if she was under orders from that evil husband of hers. No way would Jordan be cool with this, I thought to myself. On his fucking grave would this go on. On his fucking grave. And wouldn’t you know it – here we are, on his fucking grave.
I saw Rosie leave the room and begin to head down a flight of stairs, and I took that as an opportunity to get her alone, away from the rabid Cabal and out of sight of the vainglorious Emperor. She’d taken a few steps away from her building, and into Emperor’s Park, before passing by the wilting star magnolia tree that I was hiding behind. It was only when I saw the back of her slicked back, perfect ponytail – what a difference from the one she was wearing when we first met, I thought – that I saw the opportunity to get her alone and began walking behind her.
“You’ve come a long way from making arepas on Ludlow Street,” I said, tapping her on the shoulder when I finally caught up with her.
She spun around, her face scrunched up in fear, and for a split second, I thought she was going to hit me. But just as quickly, she relaxed as her eyes registered who owned the disembodied voice. “Jamie,” she whispered tearfully. “You’re here. You’re alive. I didn’t realize…”
“How the hell did you not?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows and side-eyeing her. “Your damned husband has been hunting me for decades.”
“I knew that,” she said, taking ragged breaths. “But just the fact that he was never able to take you alive led me to believe that you were…you know…” Her voice trailed off.
I wasn’t convinced, and I continued to stare at her intently as I scratched my left cheek, which was now beginning to show the first signs of salt-and-pepper beard stubble. “First of all, why the hell are you talking like you’re Queen Elizabeth? Second, let me just state it for the record: you give your asshole husbandway too much credit if you think he can take me down.”
Rosie bit her lower lip, then shifted her eyes down. I put my hand under her chin and tipped her face up, forcing her eyes to meet mine as I tried, desperately, to search for a sign of the Rosie I once knew. “Rosie,” I whispered intently. “It’s me. You don’t have to hide from me.”
Her face was a blank slate. “My name is Rose. Rose Cunningham,” she said with flat affect.
“Oh, bullshit,” I whispered, even more intently. “Whatever happened to ‘call me Rosie, everyone else does’? What happened to that woman who was makingarepas in the kitchen with my Angelique?”
That got her attention, and her deep brown eyes flashed with fire as she balled up her fists and began swinging at me. “You shit! You bastard! You did it! You almost killed my baby!”
I ducked, bobbed and weaved, avoiding each blow as I carefully tried to talk her down from the ledge. “Rosie! What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t do that shit! I swear!”
She continued to swing at me. “Yes! Yes, you did!” she squealed tearfully, repeating the same “yes, yes” with each swing, her voice getting louder each time.
“Do you want to knock it off before the fuckin’ Cabal finds us, Rosie? The fuck is wrong with you? Jesus Christ!” I was shouting despite myself and began scanning the landscape frantically for Cabal soldiers that would have undoubtedly heard us, all while bobbing and weaving like a prizefighter to avoid getting punched in the face.
She swung even harder and squealed even louder. “You tried to kill my baby! Just like you killed yours!”
That line finally got me to react, and I had to steady my breathing to stop from clocking her in the mouth. Even in the throes of the worst of my Faustian behavior, I never hit a woman, and neither did any of my bandmates – the thought of violence against a woman, let alone a woman we’d loved, didn’t even cross our drug-addled minds.
Instead, I grabbed her wrists and forced them down to her sides, holding them in place at hip level as she struggled, trying to hit me, until she finally began whimpering in defeat.
“Now you listen to me, Ramira Diaz, and you listen well,” I began, angrily. “You may have forgotten everything you were and are, but I sure as fuck haven’t forgotten a goddamn thing, and let me rest assure you, I never fuckin’ will.”
Her lower lip was trembling, her eyes were watering, and it became evident that she was on the verge of tears. Still, I continued. “So, let me get a few things out of the way now, so we’re not confused. Number one: that blast? It wasn’t me. It wasn’t anyone tied to me. It wasn’t anyone whose name I can even spell. Because let me assure you, again, that if it were me, or anyone tied to me, we’d have burned down the entire fuckin’ city, even if it meant killing ourselves in the process, and wouldn’t have left a survivor anywhere on this God-forsaken island.
“Number two: you know goddamn well I didn’t kill Angelique or our baby. Now I wear their death on my heart every. Fucking. Day. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in twenty fucking years, from the day they were killed, because I can’t get their murders out of my mind. There are times I wish I was dead, just so that I don’t have to live with the guilt of their murders, but no, here I am, and ain’t that a fuckin’ bitch from Hell. I’d give all the money in the world to have my Angelique back. I’d trade my life for Jordan’s any day of the week. And my son – my only legacy – never had a chance at life, and you think that’s all fair?
“Number three – and this is the most important part, Rosie, goddamnit, you’d better fuckin’ listen to this if you listen to nothing else: remember that promise I made to you in the hospital room? All those years ago? Because I fuckin’ do. And that’s why when Evanora and Tommy came down the Bowery after the blast, and I realized who she was, I made sure she was safe and clean and warm…”
Rosie looked shocked. “Wait. She came to you?”
I searched her face, trying to see if I could register where her loyalties lie before I continued to answer the question. For some reason, however, I couldn’t make it out. I even tried to read Rosie’s mind using a gentle form of psi, but I still couldn’t read her mind at all. It was like trying to probe a brick wall. So, to protect Evanora – and the rest of us – I chose to cover my tracks. “Yeah,” I said airily, “she mentioned something about listening to Uprising Radio.”
The name of Uprising Radio registered some type of recognition with Rosie, and her eyes lit up slightly. “My baby has heard Uprising Radio?”
“I don’t know for sure,” I continued, still adopting an airy affect, “but I’m pretty sure that’s what she said.” Using my Cabal training, I put a mental wall between my thoughts and Rosie, mostly because I didn’t know how much training she’d had in the psi arts, and I wasn’t sure if she, too, could read my mind. And if, God forbid, her loyalties lied with that pathetic excuse of her husband, I could at least protect, if not myself, then the whole Uprising movement.
I made sure the wall was firmly in place before I continued. “I think I’ve heard Uprising Radio a few times, but I don’t know much about it, who does it, or anything of the sort.”
“Yeah,” Rosie said, hesitantly, behind a mental brick wall of her own, “I have no idea, either.”
We were calmer, now – our breath was steady, our thoughts were collected, and Rosie’s fists were limp. I finally felt confident that she wasn’t going to try to hit me again, so I loosened my grip on her wrists.
But I suddenly found myself unable to let her go, so I slid my hands from her wrists to her hands and grabbed her fingers lightly. I was overcome with emotion.
“What is it, Jamie?” Her voice was cracking.
I exhaled loudly, then drew in a ragged breath. “Do you think about him, Rosie? Do you think about Jordan at all?”
She closed her eyes and allowed the tears to fall as she exhaled shakily. “Every day of my life,” she said softly. “There’s not a day that goes by that Jordan doesn’t cross my mind. Every time I look at Evanora – every time I hear her laugh – he comes to my mind. Sometimes, she gives me this look – you remember, Jamie? You remember when Jordan would hear something that was just too stupid for words, and he would get this look on his face, like, ‘were you dropped on your head as a child?’” – and to this, I gave a half-smile and a nod – “and now, she gets that look. And that one eyebrow” – she took her finger and drew on her left eyebrow – “it would just go up like…like…”
She dropped her hand as her voice trailed off, her eyes filling with tears.
I nodded my head, closed my eyes, and sighed. “Fuckin’ guy,” I said, opening my eyes and looking at Rosie. “So. You didn’t see me, right?”
Rosie smiled and winked at me. “Ivan Sapphire? Please. Get over yourself, rock star.” She squeezed my hands one last time for good measure. “I’m going to leave now. I’m not going to look back because I don’t want to see where you’re going. This way, if someone with bad intentions against you asks me if I know where you are, I can answer honestly when I say I don’t know. But just because I don’t look back, doesn’t mean I want to see you go. I need you to understand that, Jamie Ryan. I don’t need you to over-analyze things that don’t need over-analyzing. I need you to let me go, Jamie Ryan, and I need you to know that I love you, and I thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”
She finally let go of my hands, gave me a slight nod, then turned and walked back to her home. I watched her, silently, keeping the promise I made so long ago to Jordan Barker and didn’t leave what was once known as Central Park until I saw, for sure, that she was safe inside.

Excerpt #5 As I picked up my tray and headed toward the tables, I realized that whatever Claudia said, I could handle. I had Dastien. And sitting at the table with Claudia, Lucas, and Raphael were Chris and Adrian. I wasn’t alone. Adding in my parents, my brother, Tia Rosa, Meredith, and Donovan, then I really had nothing to worry about it. We’d fought a whole chapel full of demons, plus one powerful demon-possessed witch. Astaroth might be more powerful, but we would figure it out together.
Was some super scary demon after me? Yes.
Was the supernatural world coming apart? Also, yes.
Had Eli told me I was going to have to sacrifice something in order to get his help to stop the apocalypse? Again, yes.
But at least I had friends to help figure out how to fix this whole shitshow that my life had turned into.
Christ. Who was I kidding? This was a freaking disaster.
Go back to the part about the friends. I liked that part, Dastien said.
And with that I started laughing. Even my mind wasn’t my own anymore, but I didn’t really mind that part.
Would seeing my abs again help? He grinned, and his dimples deepened. And then he winked.
I laughed harder. You know, it might. Let’s see them.
Oh, I’m not actually undressing here. I was just curious.
Is everyone a tease today?
Nah. Just me and Claudia.
As the laughter faded, I was left feeling a little lighter. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but laughing through the crazy was as good a plan as any.
