Excerpt #2 I leaned over the edge of the boat, attempting to gain a better view. There it was – a horse galloping toward the village. I held my breath, squinting to see if there was any more movement hidden within the trees.
There was.
Actually, there was a lot of movement. There must have been over a hundred horses rapidly approaching the village – all after us. I felt as if my heart was going to burst out of my chest. “Uh, guys…” I stammered, not removing my eyes from the scene unfolding in front of me. “We have a bit of a situation here.”
Ian stood next to me, his breathing was relaxed. “Time to go,” he said all too passively.
I looked at him, perplexed. “Are you even scared? They’re coming after us.”
He cocked an eyebrow but said nothing. Then, he walked over to Jarvis [The boat’s captain] and whispered something in his ear just before the boat’s engine roared to life.
Ignoring Ian’s indifference, I continued to panic. Running to Jarvis I asked, “How fast can this thing go?”
He rolled his eyes. “Those men ain’t even at the village yet. We’re the only docked boat anyway. What are they gonna do, grab an imaginary boat and chase after us?” He laughed mockingly.
“Thanks Jarvis. I appreciate it,” I replied sarcastically and walked away.
The water below the boat churned to life. Finally, we were off. I watched as we distanced ourselves from the island, and as the men came riding into the village. They were too late.
Thank the gods.
From a distance, I could see Prince Ariston ride ahead of his men and halt at the end of the beaten down dock. I could feel his menacing and unforgiving glare directed at us. I looked over to Ian, who was staring back at Ariston. His face was void of emotion.
“So Ian, how badly did you treat Prince Ariston when he was your captive?”
He glanced my way for only a quick moment as he said, “Badly.”
Judging by Ian’s serious demeanor, I knew we were against a determined prince who sought revenge.
We were far from safety.

Excerpt “J-Jason, you asshole,” Meghan stammered against his chest.
She looked up at him, expecting him to be flashing that mischievous, sexy grin of his. Instead, she found him as serious as she’d ever seen him look.
“Jason,” she whispered. “You scared the shit out of me.”
“Sorry, babe.” He wiped a droplet of water off her cheek with his thumb and smoothed her soggy hair back from her face. “I didn’t mean to.” He stepped away from her, his eyes blazing.
“You’re soaking wet, Meghan.” His voice was hushed, intense, and his gaze practically burned her. His eyes swept her from head to toe, pausing where her nipples jutted through her thin T-shirt, which was now transparent.
“That’s what happens when you spray yourself with water.” God, Meghan. You are an idiot.
“You should probably get out of these wet things.” His lip twitched, and his familiar grin appeared.
Meghan snorted. Maybe Jason was the idiot.
What wasn’t idiotic was the way he ran his hands over her body, first on her shoulders and down her arms, then to her waist. He plucked the T-shirt from her waistband, exposing the strip of skin at her waist.
“Do you need some help?” he whispered even as he worked her shirt over her head.
Meghan heard the plop of wet cotton on the floor, but she didn’t take her eyes off him. Her thoughts raced through her head. He’d pulled back yesterday, which was definitely reasonable, although disappointing. But now? Now, he looked like he wanted nothing more than to take her every way imaginable.
And Meghan had a very vivid imagination.
He stepped into her space and pulled her to him, his big hand splayed across her back.
“What about the thing we talked about yesterday?” Meghan was horrified the moment the words came out of her mouth. What the hell was she doing?
He froze, but he didn’t take his hands off of her. In fact, she could feel him fiddling with the clasp of her bra. “I haven’t started working on your project, so I’m not technically your employee yet.”
“Oh. Well.” Meghan swallowed hard. “That’s a totally different situation, then, right?”
“Right.” The clasp sprang open, and Jason’s hands were all over her bare back and then at her shoulders, slipping the straps down her arms. Meghan panicked for a split second. She could think of only two times when Jason saw her completely topless, but by his appreciative look, he approved. Then, in a flash, he had her up in his arms and had carried her over to the empty dry-goods table which was a height where her breasts just happened to be at the perfect level for him to suck one peak into his hot mouth. She groaned as his tongue circled her nipple while he thumbed the other.
He was so good at this. So, so good.

Chapter 1 My Name Is Coal. Not Cole. Not Headphones.
“Shouldn’t you be home at this hour, Headphones?”
I clenched my jaw and balled up my fists, but I kept my gaze fixed on the city lights.
“My name is not Headphones. It’s Coal. And the agreement was to be home at nine. It’s 8:30 pm.”I still had a whole half-hour, and I was going to live it up to the last second.
“8:33 pm, actually.” Anti-Gravity corrected, standing next to me on the edge of the tall building.
He looked down at the ribbon of light down below us and whistled softly.
“People on the streets look like ants.”
I frowned and squinted my eyes. Finally getting frustrated that I couldn’t see anything worth a bean, I pulled my glasses out of my pocket and slipped them on. So that ribbon of light was actually the street.
(Don’t ask why I am not wearing my glasses in the first place. It’s complicated, and I’m not sure I have the answer.)
“Scared of heights, Tights?” I asked, glancing at him and noticing he was in full costume.
Overzealous superhero.
He sent me a scowl. “Don’t call me that. Either Ben or Anti-Gravity, but stop calling me Tights.”
I cocked an eyebrow and looked him up and down. “Your outfit is nothing but cherry red spandex, and I think I have the right to call you Tights. Besides, you call me Headphones, so why can’t I call you whatever I want? Would you prefer Benny-boo?”
“Firstly, everyone knows that superheroes, and yes, even supervillains wear tights. Secondly, everyone calls you Headphones. Thirdly—” Tights stopped and shook his head, slightly shivering at the new nickname “—I think I would prefer Tights over Benny-boo.”
“Look at me, sweats and a tee. No tights here. And just because I happen to like music, doesn’t give people the right to nickname me Headphones. Besides, I already have a real villain name,” I said, getting frustrated with the conversation and the cold breeze that was picking up.
I rubbed my bare arms in an attempt to warm myself up. It didn’t work. It never worked. I didn’t even know why I tried.
“What? Ember?”
I scowled at him. “Yes. Ember.”
Tights grimaced. “I’d go with Headphones if I were you, and you wearing those headphones 24/7 gives people the right to call you that. What do you even listen to?” he asked, reaching across and yanking off my headphones.
I snatched them back from his hands.
“Music. Ever heard of it before?” I turned from the edge and stomped back to the rooftop’s door, deciding the cocky superhero ruined enough of my night, but before I could open it, I felt Tights’s presence behind me.
I whipped around to find him both flying and grinning. My hand automatically tightened on the doorknob.
“How does it feel like to have superpowers and be banned from using them?” he asked.
There was no compassion in his voice, just pure unadulterated teasing.
“Like a whole strawberry cake all to myself,” I grumbled, yanking the door open and walking into the dimly lit staircase.
“See you at home, brother,” Tights called after me, his voice rising above the squeaking hinges as the door closes.
I whipped around just in time to see Tights flying off into the night. I could just make out his laughter as he left me behind. Some faithful twin brother I had. Some family values he cherished.
“Jerk.”
I turned back around and stared at the stairs in front of me. I sighed loudly, loud enough that it echoed off the graffiti-filled walls. Why couldn’t this building have an elevator? That would have made my life so much easier.
Before I could even take the first step of my long journey down the nearly fifty flights of stained and sticky concrete stairs, my phone buzzed in my back pocket.
(Let’s just say, when you forget about your phone, feeling it vibrate is very weird.)
Taking it out of my pocket, I looked down at the glowing screen.
One new text message from Ben: 8:40 pm brother. Hope you get home safe.
I groaned loudly. This was not going to be fun. I put my headphones back on and turned up the volume. Okay, I could do this. I had been using these stairs for three months straight now. I could jog down this with no problem.
Hopefully.
It was not fun being banned from using my powers. Stupid Board of Heroes and Villains.

Feeling small and dainty next to an extremely well-built man was a whole new world. Jeremy, her last boyfriend from three years ago, was only five ten.

Not wanting to break the spell, Lilly didn’t make a move on her own, but simply let him guide her. “I enjoy your company too,” she murmured into his shirt, hoping he heard her over the music.
They rocked together for a few minutes without words. Her heart raced as Brett traced down her temple with his lips, still cradling her hand close to his chest. “I think we should spend more time together.” A ripple of bliss started from her spine and cascaded in a wave down to her toes.

Excerpt “Good night, Dad. Have a safe trip home.” Again she kissed his cheek.
“It’s about time you were with a man who has a head on his shoulders. This one doesn’t seem like a waste of time and life.” He hitched his chin in Griffin’s direction.
“Dad, Griffin’s—”
Griffin reached around her to shake Walt’s hand. “Good to meet you, Walt. We’ll see you at the wedding.”
In the elevator, Indy took the cake back. “You didn’t have to do that. I never intended for my father to think we were a couple.”
“No problem. It seemed to make him happy.”
“Yeah, that’ll last. He’ll suddenly remember which daughter he was talking to.” The corners of her mouth pulled down, and they got off the elevator.
He didn’t know what to say. No words of comfort would erase the pain. “Why is he so hard on you?”
The low, humorless chuckle didn’t fit her. “So many reasons. I was a wild teenager. Big surprise, right? Then I went to the city for college to get away from him. I’m not married with a pack of kids.” She sighed. “But he’ll never forgive me for taking Quinn away from him.”
They walked out to the street. “She doesn’t look like a hostage to me.”
“She would’ve been. She was seventeen when our mom died. She spent the next year doing everything for Dad while he poured himself into a bottle. She’d already applied to college here and had scholarship money waiting. Quinn is scary smart, but she was going to walk away from that to take care of Dad. One day, I drove home, packed her stuff into my car, and brought her to Chicago.”
“It’s been what, twelve years?” He stepped closer to her.
“Dad’s good at grudges.”
“She could’ve gone back at any time.”
“But it’s my fault. If I had never shown her the world outside Hooperville, she would’ve been happy there forever.”
“You think so?”
“No, but it’s what he thinks. She would’ve grown old and bitter. Luckily we have Lydia to keep an eye on him, or he probably would’ve moved in with Quinn.”
He looked up and down the street. “Where’s your car?”
She sighed again. “In the shop. Something’s wrong with the transmission.”
“How are you getting home?”
“Same way I got here—public transportation.”
“You’re taking the bus?” Somehow, he couldn’t picture her standing at a bus stop and clambering up the steps, pushing into the crowd.
“Yes, I’m taking the bus. What’s so funny?”
“How many times on your trip did a guy try to pick you up?” That he could imagine, especially with her bar uniform on.
She shrugged. “No more than when I’m at work. The unwashed masses are not as bad as you picture them.”
“Come on, I’ll give you a ride.”
“Not necessary. I don’t mind taking the bus, and my apartment is out of your way.”
“Come on. By the time the bus shows, I’ll have you halfway home.”
They walked to his car in silence.
“What, no Jag tonight?” she asked, approaching the SUV.
“Sorry, I came from the office.”
Indy opened the rear passenger door and carefully placed the cake on the floor. She closed the door and leaned against it. “Thank you for tonight. You were an excellent distraction.”
She smiled up at him, golden eyes reflecting the streetlights. On impulse, he lowered his lips to hers. Her heady scent grabbed him, and he pressed her against the car.
She tasted even better than he imagined. He expected light and breezy but found her spicy and secretive. He braced his hands on the car behind her, trapping her with his body and preventing himself from grabbing her. His fingers wanted to tangle in her long hair.
He pulled back before he could want more.
“Wow. What was that for?” she asked with a smile.
“It’ll keep your dad happy.”
“That would make sense if he were watching, but we’re down the block and around the corner. And they’re on the fifth floor. He can’t possibly see us.”
He gave a careless glance over his shoulder. “Huh, I guess you’re right.”
She laughed lightly. “Thanks. It’s been much too long since I’ve been kissed like that.”
He raised his eyebrows. Her comment said a lot about her previous lover. His eyes went back to her mouth. How could a man look at those lips and not want to taste? He opened the passenger door for her to get in before he forgot himself.

Excerpt Lyle gestured at the trail ahead. “Race you back to the lodge?”
Isabelle waved a ski pole in the air. “Wait wait wait. Normally I live for a race, but we haven’t settled anything yet.”
“Fine, let the negotiations begin.” He leaned on his own poles. “That’s why I came out here. Jake said you’re at your most relaxed when skiing. I might disagree with that, but I only have that one night to go by.”
Even though Isabelle’s skin was still bronzed from her time in the Sudan, he noticed a quick wash of color on the delicate skin of her neck.
Good. The attraction on her side was still there, no matter how much she tried to squash it.
“I…I mean…like I said, it doesn’t matter anymore. We’re two grownups. We should be able to get along just fine. All I really want is to know why you’re here.”
“And if it has anything to do with you.” He finished that thought for her.
She turned an even deeper red. “I’m sure it doesn’t. Why would it? Our thing was months ago, I barely even remember it and I’m sure it was just a blip on your radar, and—”
“I already told you, I remember all of it.” He did. It was seared into his soul, every minute they’d spent together. Not just the nearly naked parts, but the talking and laughing and flirting. She hadn’t known who he really was, and probably wouldn’t have cared. Isabelle was driven, passionate, but also loose and relaxed after her break from the intensity of her work. He’d been drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Or maybe a bug-zapper.
Still was.
But tell her that? Probably not a good idea, judging by her wariness.
He could tell her part of the truth, and that would have to do.
“I’m in the midst of a business crisis. It’s getting ugly, so the board asked me to step down while the lawyers work things out. We’re trying to keep it out of the press. I came here to finalize the funds for Rocky Peak and Jake suggested I stay for a while to experience what I was investing in. Seemed like the perfect way to lie low. So here I am.”
“So it’s just business, then? Nothing personal?”
“If you Googled me, you know my reputation. It’s always business.” A sense of sadness washed through him as he said those words. Since the age of seventeen, he’d been working to become a success. That left no room for anything “personal.”
Sexual, yes. But not personal. And the fact that ‘sexual’ and ‘personal’ could be two separate things was part of the problem.
Isabelle studied him, almost as if she could tell the direction of his thoughts. “Your reputation is that you’re a renegade who plays by his own rules. Is that true?”
“Careful. If you ask me too many questions like that, I might think you want to get to know me.”
She gave a mock-shudder. “God forbid. Like I need another billionaire in my life. They’re a pain in the ass, those guys.”
“Well then, you’ll be glad to know I’m de-billionaired at the moment.”
“De-billionaired?”
“Yes. For now. Long story.”
“Hm.” She glanced down at his skis. “At least you managed to snag a hot pair of G3’s before you became de-billionaired.”
He looked down at them too. “Yeah, they’re fast. Almost too fast. The edges—”
He realized she was gone, her trim figure skiing fast in the direction of Rocky Peak.
“Race you to the lodge!” she yelled over her shoulder.
“Lowest trick in the book,” he called back as he worked to get his skis moving.
“Oh, I have plenty lower than that. Three brothers, remember.”
In a minute, he was hot on her trail. He was physically very fit—he’d earned his first money in the boxing ring—but Isabelle was a born skier. So he gave up trying to pass her and simply enjoyed the sight of her graceful motion and round ass in her snow pants.
Come to think of it, had they actually “settled” anything?
They hadn’t, and that was fine with him. Because when it came to Isabelle, he didn’t plan to settle. He wanted more than that.
Which would probably scare the ski pants off her and therefore would remain his own private business.

My Review ACROSS THE HORIZON is a fun, flirty, well-written contemporary romance. Tanner Reese is, as Rita calls him, a two-name celebrity. He’s always Tanner Reese and never just Tanner. Rita is just Rita, a woman reeling from her husband of seven years’ affair with a coworker. When celebrity chef, Tanner, and his brother Porter cater a charity event for the medical practice Rita, her husband, and “the other woman” all work for, hilarity ensues in the cutest of meet-cutes. Not recognizing the hot chef, Rita latches onto him in an attempt to make her soon-to-be-ex jealous. It works, but ignites a spark that soon becomes a raging inferno that will not be contained.
Plot A straight-up romance, the plot is all about Tanner and Rita with excellent subplotting involving Greg, the douchebag husband, and Tanner’s slightly crazy ex-girlfriend. Aly Martinez does a great job of building tension, setting expectations that are then drawn out into excruciating lengths that keeps the anticipation as high for the reader as it is for the characters.
The Characters Oh my gosh! How MUCH do I love the characters?! They are so much fun. From Tanner’s inappropriate mom to Rita’s BFF, Charlotte, the supporting cast is just as delicious as Tanner and Rita. And what can I say about Tanner and Rita? The self-described mama’s boy and trophy wife are as funny as they are endearing. Tanner is your typical cocky playboy who doesn’t date women who play hard to get. Until he meets Rita. And while I’m not a huge fan of the whole “I was a player until I met the right woman” trope, there is far more to Tanner than just a man needing to be tamed by Ms. Right. He’s profoundly patient, willing to play the long game in order to be with Rita. She is fresh out of her marriage and in no place to be in a relationship when they meet, but she can’t deny the attraction between them, either. Rita is anything but a wallflower who needs a strong man to protect her. I love these two alpha characters dancing around each other.
Top Five Things I Enjoyed About ACROSS THE HORIZON 1. Mama Reese. She might be my favorite supporting character in any book I’ve ever read.
2. Strong protagonists. Both Tanner and Rita are strong and independent. Rita could have easily become this injured being that needed saving by a strong man, but I love that she never succumbed to the stereotype.
3. Sweet revenge. They say the best revenge is living a good life and Rita excels at this.
4. Flirtatious dialogue. The dialogue is rich and charming and defines who these characters are.
5. Light romance. Even though there are darker themes, the author keeps the story lighthearted, making it a perfect holiday read.
Bottom Line A fun and flirty contemporary romance with lots of heart and humor.

My Review I need to start off by saying this is the first book in a series. It wasn’t obvious from the description, so I wasn’t expecting the ending, but now that I know, I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment. Told from four third-person points of view, this is a little different than most young adult dystopians. Instead of a single protagonist, we have four, although Simon seems to be the main character. Twin brothers Simon and West inhabit a world without power, similar to the TV show Revolution from a few years back. West is a classic player with good looks and swagger to match. Simon is a nerd among nerds, living inside a role-playing game he accesses through power he generates with solar panels, something that must remain a secret. When a mysterious man is killed in front of Simon, he’s given information that may allow him to turn the power back on. He and West embark on a journey to Washington DC, only to be separated almost immediately. While West is at home in the wilderness, Simon is out of his element. Each winds up with a traveling companion, Riya for Simon and Alex for West. Both girls provide a romantic element as well as the foil that each boy needs. Along the way, all four encounter danger and learn a lot about each other and themselves.
Plot The plot centers around Simon and West meeting up in DC to turn the power back on. Several subplots feed the main plot, but they’re minor. With four points of view, we get a lot of insight into their journeys. The authors throw everything at them, one setback after another, at a pulse-pounding pace that kept me turning the pages long past when I should have been doing something else. While this is primarily a plot-driven tale, the authors do a good job with character development which feeds into the story well.
The Characters The characters are where this story really shines. All four main characters are deeply-drawn and complex in ways that enhance the plot. I loved all four of them, and even though at times their goals conflicted with one another, I never stopped rooting for all of them. West and Simon couldn’t be more different as twins, and yet that bond is strong, making them realize how important they are to one another. Alex and Riya were as different from one another as Simon and West, but they each bring something to the relationship that the brothers desperately lack, rounding out this foursome to perfection.
Top Five Things I Loved About WAYPOINT 1. The plot. Young adult dystopian is my favorite genre. I love dark worlds that are recognizable, peppered with characters who are still trying to figure out themselves much less the world around them.
2. Angsty love. Not one, but two romances with enough angst to satisfy even me.
3. The characters. I can’t pick a favorite; I love them all. Like two sides of a coin squared, they balance each other out.
4. Action. There’s plenty of action, adventure, and suspense to keep me riveted to the pages.
5. The ending. Normally I’m not a fan of cliffhanger endings, but the authors crafted a satisfying conclusion to this portion of the story while leaving me on the edge of my seat for more
Bottom Line A wonderful young adult contemporary romance that examines how social anxiety can transform someone from the inside out.

Excerpt #5 What is it with me and storms? What is it that lures me to the tempest, delights in the chaos, and dances in the turmoil?
I wish I knew.
If I did, I wouldn’t have pressed my body against Zeke’s. I wouldn’t have pulled his mouth to mine. And I wouldn’t have kissed him.
He stills. For a brief moment, Zeke is immobile. Then a low growl sounds. He wraps one arm around my waist, shoves his hand in my hair, and kisses me back. Lord, does he kiss me back. Zeke’s mouth is firm, demanding, in complete control. He bites my bottom lip, causing me to yelp, and then sweeps his tongue inside.
My hands slide to his shoulders, nails scraping against the fabric of his T-shirt. I wish it was bare skin; I wish I could score his flesh and claim this whirlwind as mine.
“You’re wrong,” I gasp, between hot, desperate kisses. “Everyone belongs to someone.”
Fingers hook in the waistband of my pajama shorts and yank me closer. “You reckon that someone is you?” His gaze turns pitying. “Baby girl, you’ve got mistake written all over you.” A large hand skims the back of my thigh, hitching my leg up to wrap around his waist. Zeke drives his hips forward and grunts.
“Jerk.”
He’s hard.
“Siren.”
I’m wet.
“Don’t you dare stop,” I warn.
“Not a chance.”
My head lolls back.
“Give me your mouth. I need to taste you.” His lips devour mine while I hold him close, succumbing to the bliss of lips and tongue.
“Jesus fuck. You taste like cherries.”
“It’s my moisturizer.”
Zeke licks and nips his way down the column of my neck. When he reaches the juncture of my collarbone, he groans. “Freckles. You’re fucking killing me.” Sharp teeth bite my skin. Hard.
Knees? Gone.
Pale skin? Bruised.
Cares given? None. Not a one.
Thankfully, I’m lifted by two muscular arms before my ass hits the ground. With both of my legs wrapped around his hips, Zeke stalks to the closest available surface. The sharp cold of the marble countertop against my bare thighs is unexpected. I hiss.
Wrenching my head back by the hair, Zeke takes one of my nipples in his mouth, sucking it through the fabric of my tank top. I hiss again.
“I’m gonna own this body,” he rumbles, his hand palming my breast. “Every last inch will be mine.”
“Promises, promises,” I pant.
“You think I’m lying?” His eyes sear mine.
“I barely know you.”

Excerpt “You catching that?” Jase asked, his focus returning to the poster and the tape.
“Catching what?” Heather replied.
Poster in hand, he moved to the front window and pressed it against the glass, smoothing it before turning back to her. “Catching the little buzz we have going on between us.”
“A little… the thing is…” C’mon Heather, be strong. You are the cookie lady now. You don’t date. You are all you need. That’s what the podcast she’d been listening to said to her over and over again. Mantra in hand, she slapped on her I’m-in-charge-here-buddy mask. “It would never work between us.”
The edges of his lips ticked up ever so slightly. “You can’t know that.”
Oh, she knew.
He sauntered toward her.
Unwilling to back down, she stepped toward him. Expression firm, she said, “I can already see exactly how this whole thing would play out if we let it. You’d start with a horrible pick up line.”
“Guilty.” His hands fell to the belt loops of his jeans.
Her palm itched to press against the front of his tee, but she refrained. “Then I’d counter with a witty response. This time my reply would be even better. Funny, intelligent…everything.”
“Now, that I’d like to hear.” Nothing but a foot of crackling air sizzled between them.
“Trust me, if I had said it, it would have been epic. You can’t repeat something like that. It has to happen in the moment.” She shook her head, the sleek ponytail she’d carefully arranged earlier brushing against the collar of her jacket.
“That right there is why we wouldn’t have worked out. I mean you couldn’t even come up with a snappier reply.” He crossed his arms, the little veins of his muscled forearms flexing with the motion.
“Oh, I would’ve. It would’ve been the best response in the history of pick-up line replies.”
“I don’t believe you.” The glimmer in his eyes lit up his entire face.
He was clearly enjoying this exchange entirely too much.
Control. She needed the power back. “Trust would’ve always been one of your issues in our relationship.”
“Maybe you just couldn’t be honest with me about how you felt. That’s probably why we would have always argued.” He raised his eyebrows in a clear ultimatum.
Challenge accepted.
She stepped the tiniest bit closer to him. “Let’s say you threw out that awful line again. The one about taking me out.”
“I’m with you so far.” He glanced down to the floor in clear acknowledgment of her movement forward, but he held his ground.
“We’d banter for a good bit—”
His face sparked with humor. “Sounds about right.”
“Both of us would get that tingly feeling of attraction. You know the one.” So maybe she made her voice a little breathier than usual. Sue her.
His mouth parted, the exaggerated fullness of his lower lip apparent. “You have a tingly feeling?”
She shook her head and raised a hand. Not touching his chest like she desperately wanted to but getting within millimeters. “That’s not the important part. Eventually you would convince me to go on a date.”
“I’d take you to this great taco stand. I love tacos.”
“Despite that, I’d probably let you take me out again. And again,” she said, not willing to acknowledge the way she wanted to nip at his lip with her teeth.
He nodded. “I’m digging this relationship so far.”
“Eventually, you’d ask me to move in. I’d say no. You’d pressure me, even though I wouldn’t be ready.”
“What can I say? I wouldn’t want to spend a night away from you. No use paying for two apartments.” She shrugged, dropping her hand.
“I’d cave, and we’d finally move in together—”
“Do we get to hook up first? Don’t skip that part.” This time he moved forward. Not a lot, just a smidge.
She stayed put. She refused to back up first. “Of course. It would be awful. Sorry Speed Racer, but I need more than three minutes of go-time.”
“That’s not what you’d say after you screamed my name.” He leaned forward, the whisper of his words brushing against her ear.
God, there wasn’t but a breath of space between them. She was all turned-on Heather, ready to throw her why-have-a-man-when-you-can-have-cookies resolve away.
His breath smelled of cinnamon candy and coffee, turning her knees effectively to melted butter.
No, she stopped herself. Back to the break-up at hand.

She looked up at him, expecting him to be flashing that mischievous, sexy grin of his. Instead, she found him as serious as she’d ever seen him look.
“Jason,” she whispered. “You scared the shit out of me.”
“Sorry, babe.” He wiped a droplet of water off her cheek with his thumb and smoothed her soggy hair back from her face. “I didn’t mean to.” He stepped away from her, his eyes blazing.
“You’re soaking wet, Meghan.” His voice was hushed, intense, and his gaze practically burned her. His eyes swept her from head to toe, pausing where her nipples jutted through her thin T-shirt, which was now transparent.
“That’s what happens when you spray yourself with water.” God, Meghan. You are an idiot.
“You should probably get out of these wet things.” His lip twitched, and his familiar grin appeared.
Meghan snorted. Maybe Jason was the idiot.
What wasn’t idiotic was the way he ran his hands over her body, first on her shoulders and down her arms, then to her waist. He plucked the T-shirt from her waistband, exposing the strip of skin at her waist.
“Do you need some help?” he whispered even as he worked her shirt over her head.
Meghan heard the plop of wet cotton on the floor, but she didn’t take her eyes off him. Her thoughts raced through her head. He’d pulled back yesterday, which was definitely reasonable, although disappointing. But now? Now, he looked like he wanted nothing more than to take her every way imaginable.
And Meghan had a very vivid imagination.
He stepped into her space and pulled her to him, his big hand splayed across her back.
“What about the thing we talked about yesterday?” Meghan was horrified the moment the words came out of her mouth. What the hell was she doing?
He froze, but he didn’t take his hands off of her. In fact, she could feel him fiddling with the clasp of her bra. “I haven’t started working on your project, so I’m not technically your employee yet.”
“Oh. Well.” Meghan swallowed hard. “That’s a totally different situation, then, right?”
“Right.” The clasp sprang open, and Jason’s hands were all over her bare back and then at her shoulders, slipping the straps down her arms. Meghan panicked for a split second. She could think of only two times when Jason saw her completely topless, but by his appreciative look, he approved. Then, in a flash, he had her up in his arms and had carried her over to the empty dry-goods table which was a height where her breasts just happened to be at the perfect level for him to suck one peak into his hot mouth. She groaned as his tongue circled her nipple while he thumbed the other.

Excerpt “Here’s what happened,” I say. “The Ozymandias factory slipped into two-dimensional space-time for a little while. It’s showing up as a nuclear blast to the Authority because no one’s gone 2-D before.”
“I don’t like Merciless crawling all over my part of the state, Meimi. The Scythe pays big money to stay off grid.”
“I’m sorry. Mom wanted to work the drift and—” I stop myself before saying anything about aliens or finding Luci. “—I guess we got caught up. Please clean things up for me, like you did with RCM1.”
Muscles flicker along Fritz’s thick neck. “Not so easy this time, Meims. You’re coming to me with a major science crime and all of twenty minutes to cover it up.” He narrows his eyes. “And all because you flipped an entire factory into two dimensional space-time.” Fritz presses some buttons on the top of his desk. “Did you hear that, boss?”
My stomach seems to tumble through the floor. Fritz has been transmitting our conversation to the Scythe.
A crackle sounds over the intercom. A deep, silky voice fills the small room. “Bring her in.” I’d know that tone anywhere.
