Excerpt #3 Julian put on the smolder, and she realized what he’d attempted drunkenly at the bar all those months ago didn’t hold a candle to this. His eyes were heated, his jaw prominent, his mouth hooked into her favorite lopsided smile, his dimple popping. “Stardust, there’s so much that I want to do to you.” Each word that came out of that sensual mouth of his dripped with sex. The lyrics from “Hot in Here” drifted through her head, and she almost had to physically stop herself from fanning her face.
Amalie’s breathing grew heavy as the space between them grew electric, a tangible thing holding them in place. She looked at him, and not from beneath her lashes. No, she met his stare head-on, because she owned her feelings this time, just this once not caring about the consequences. All she could think about since they stepped foot in that hotel room was Julian and how much she needed him, how he was the only one who could fill the void in her chest.
“Why don’t you show me?” she challenged, her voice a sultry whisper.
Julian moved, his eyes flashing a deep green, the color of the forest during a thunderstorm. He was slow, achingly slow, as his hand reached forward to hold the back of her head, his hand digging deep into her hair. The feel of his fingers fisting in her locks threatened to completely unravel her.
“This is a terrible idea.” Julian’s voice had taken on that deep, husky timbre, a tone that promised hours, hell, even days of endless pleasure and tangled limbs beneath the sheets.
His thumb came up to rub a gentle path over her lips. She wanted to know how he kissed, how he did…other things. Was he rough or was he gentle?
It didn’t matter, not when she wanted it all from him.
A tiny gasp escaped her as she reacted to his touch, his scent, his everything.
“It’s a terrible idea, yes,” she finally murmured against his thumb.
He stilled, a slow-building grin tilting his lips. His eyes blazing as they flitted from her mouth to her eyes and back again. “Tell me we shouldn’t do this then.” He moved closer, his hand running a line up and down her neck, featherlight, and Amalie found herself arching into his touch, the reaction immediate and natural.
“Tell me,” he coaxed, even though his tightening grip in her hair and his fevered touch screamed the absolute opposite.
“I can’t. Not this time,” she answered, her voice stronger now, which was surprising given the fact that white-hot lust lit her up like the 4th of July.
She slipped her hands around the back of Julian’s neck, finally burying her fingers into his unruly hair, and then Julian’s mouth brushed over hers in the most torturous almost-kiss of her entire life. It was barely a whisper, but it was already hotter than any full-on kiss she’d ever experienced.
“You’re going to ruin me, Amalie.”
Her hand clasped around his wrist, stilling his movements. “Shut up and kiss me already.”

My Review This was a nice diversion from real life, and just what I needed. Seventeen-year-old Fiona is the daughter of con artists. Her entire life has been devoted to learning the craft of the con. A talented artist and impeccable forger, she and her family have been pulling cons as long as she can remember. But when she was ten, her mother disappeared and left clues on how to find her in her forgeries. Fiona and her dad have been working to retrieve the forgeries and the clues so the family can be together again. At least until her father is caught pulling a job. Now Fiona must complete the mission herself. She pulls together a ragtag crew of high school friends, including a tech genius, a former cosplayer turned master of disguise, and her arch nemesis, but charming classmate she may or may not have a thing for,
Plot The story centers around Fiona finding her mother and the heists she needs to complete to gather all the clues to find her mother. The heists were well-planned and executed, and added such an entertaining thread through the book. There is a subtle romantic element with Colin, the son of the FBI agent who arrested her father and a number of twists; some I saw coming, others I didn’t, making this a well-plotted fun read.
The Characters The characters are what really makes this story. Fiona is a fully-engaging anti-hero as a con artist. At no point did I not pull for her. She’s a criminal, but she was so lovable and relatable, I wanted her to succeed at every turn. Her dad, while singularly driven, still clearly loves his daughter and puts her needs above his own. Her best friend Natalie and her tech guru, Tig, are both interesting in their own ways. And Colin, as the potential love interest, is just as complex as Fiona.
Top Five Things I Enjoyed About THE CON CODE 1. Heists. We’ve been rewatching the Ocean’s Eleven movie franchise and I forgot how fun a well-developed con can be.
2. Fiona. She is so dedicated to finding her mom, but her loyalty to her crew at all costs makes her a hero to root for to the very end.
3. Action. The story moves with a lot of action and edge-of-your-seat suspense.
4. Loyalty. Fiona is loyal to her family and her friends and those loyalties are tested, making her even more relatable.
5. The Ending. I wasn’t sure how things were going to end up, but the author did a great job of wrapping everything up in a satisfying ending that wasn’t predictable.
Bottom Line A thrilling escapist read with fantastic characters and lots of action.

Excerpt Across the room, I see a slight rain of dust fall from the top of the pillar the others are looking at. Paolo is bent over behind it like he’s examining something. I squint, focusing my flashlight on the falling dust, and I see the dirt around the bottom of that particular pillar is thicker than around the others. It looks different too, like powder . . .
Anders takes a step back from the pillar, shaking his head. “This doesn’t look very stable.”
James shoots Anders a look before saying, “You’re one to talk.” Anders stiffens.
Everything seems to slow down as Paolo pulls a skull from the pillar, holding it out teasingly toward Maud. My heart stops and my limbs go numb as I realize that the thick powder around the pillar is crumbled plaster. “No,” I say softly, but our guide must hear me because he spins around.
Lambert reacts much faster than I do. He runs, arms stretched out and body rigid with panic. Maud recoils from Paolo in disgust as he puts down his flashlight and pulls another skull free from the pillar.
“Stop!” M. Lambert shouts. “Don’t touch that!”
“Run!” I scream.
Anders steps back, pressing himself against the wall. Maud and Paolo simply freeze, whipping their heads around to look our way. I hear the rumbling before I feel it. Paolo must too, because he grabs Maud and James and jerks them back hard toward the far wall. Grabbing Gretchen, I drag her over behind the pillar I examined earlier. It’s strong, sturdy, and it might be our only chance of not being buried alive. As we rush past, I shout Henri’s name.
“What in—” Liv says.
“Move!” Henri pulls her toward me so fast she drops her camera and stumbles into Gretchen and me.
Our world vibrates and then a roar of noise fills my ears. Rocks crashing, bones and stone cracking, people screaming. I’m screaming too. I’ve never heard so many people sound so desperately afraid. Flashlight beams spin wildly about before all the light is dimmed by falling dust and debris. Gretchen and I hold tight to each other and I close my eyes against the dust that burns them like fire.
The shaking seems to go on forever until suddenly it stops. Seconds pass in eerie silence. My lungs burn and Gretchen coughs against my shoulder.
Somebody moans. I think it’s Henri. I reach for him, finding his jacket and gripping it.
“Are you okay?” I try to say, but the words aren’t clear. My voice sounds raspy and broken.
I open my eyes a little. The dust is settling, and if I squint I can see a bit without my eyes burning. Not that there is much to see. There are spots of light shining through the dust cloud in a few places, but most of the flashlights have been buried. I’m afraid to sit up straight, terrifi ed that the shaking will begin again and the ceiling will fall in and crush us all. My breathing comes in tight gasps as I fight to push away the panic. The air burns my throat and lungs until I’m coughing again.
Henri digs out his big flashlight and shines it around the room. “Oh no,” he whispers.
Gretchen and I shift our position until we can see where he’s looking. My stomach rolls and I feel like I might be sick. Where the farthest pillar stood, now there is a massive pile of dirt, rocks, and bones. Nearly half of the room is caved in. The pile reaches up to the ceiling. Two of the five tunnels out of the room are blocked.

The Capital that was once a glorious sight to behold was no more. It laid in destruction and agony. The cries of children filled the restless skies as deformed creatures began to defile the lands. Tormented souls that were meant to remain banished wandered out in the open.
The demons cut through all; old, young, strong, or weak. Nothing halted them from executing their God’s justice as they began to initiate their plans of erasing mankind and starting the world anew.
Griffyn was running far away from the Capital. By some miracle, he had escaped with the sword that the Red Hand entrusted him with, the sword that harbored the only thing that could pose a threat to the Gods that descended: the Masamune.
Tears were running down on his cheeks as he flew past the terrified citizens. Those who stood their grounds and tried to fight for their right to live were being left for slaughter. Yet Griffyn did not wait, he did not fight back.

“Little Arthur Barnett stared up at us, squirming in his bright blue footie pajamas. He was about as baby-like as it was possible to be. More baby-like, in fact, than most babies actually were. Gooding reached in and pulled Arthur’s legs straight. One stretched out longer than the other. “I thought so,” Gooding murmured. “Bryn, look closer.”
Here was where I got paid the imaginary bucks. I gripped the side of the crib and let my shoulder relax, then my neck, then the muscles in my face—just like Gooding had taught me. The world narrowed down to just me and the creature in the crib. Soft, delicate baby skin turned hard and leathery. Nails sharpened.
Sparse hair grew coarse and wiry. Its eyes darkened and sunk into its haunted face. The sight made my stomach churn. It was like a baby crypt keeper.
“Changeling,” I muttered. “With one hell of a glamour to hide that face.”
“A newborn, too, judging by its proportions,” Gooding sighed. “I’ll bet it doesn’t even speak yet. Which means we can’t just ask it to leave.”
“As if it would,” I snorted. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the horrible little face. I’d seen pictures of more attractive mummies.
“Patience and optimism are valuable tools,” Gooding chided.
I had to roll my eyes. “So are caution, paranoia, and an iron fire poker.”
Gooding gave me the peeved-priest look before smoothing his features into his teacher-priest look. “Well, it’s a living changeling, not a doll or a golem,” he summarized. “And it has a very good disguise. What does this tell us?”
I took a deep breath. “It was put here by a more powerful Fae. Probably from a court. Means we can get Arthur back.” Even as I said it, my heart skipped a beat. But there was nothing to worry about. We didn’t get the court Fae here. They worked through others and never stepped foot on American soil . . . right?

Excerpt He dipped his head as he pocketed the undies. “I’m so sleepy.”
Amalie pinched her lips together at the sight of her bright red thong sticking out of his pocket. She made herself remember the reason for all of this, the reason she was even putting up with this mess. She knew Julian was drunk, but there was something she had to ask.
“Hey, how badly do you want to get to the US Open?” She edged closer to him, hands wringing.
He propped a hand on the back of the couch, his eyes even heavier lidded than before. “I…I want it more than anything, but it’s impossible,” he slurred.
“What if I can get you there? What if I can make it happen?” She cocked her head to the side, realizing she was quickly losing him. He was minutes from passing out. Again.
“You can’t. You live in this tiny, itsy bitsy,” he held his pointer finger and thumb together, “house or hotel or whatever this place is. Tennis is expensive, more than I can afford.” He shuffled to the front of the couch.
“But what if I could? What would you be willing to do for me?” She regretted the words instantly.
A sexy smirk tilted his lips and then his hands went to the button on his jeans, his thumb tracing that sexy trail of hair right above it. “Are you propositioning me?”
Amalie forced herself to look away.
“Oh, no you don’t,” she said while blindly smacking at his hand, ignoring that little bit of drool pooling at the corner of her mouth from his impromptu show. “You are not about to completely undress here.”
Suddenly her hand smacked at emptiness and she turned to see that Julian had fallen onto the couch haphazardly, one hand still on his fly. He was out cold. She growled in aggravation as she dug her underwear from his jeans, careful to keep her eyes averted even though those traitors wanted to look their fill.
After rearranging him as best she could, she looked down at his unconscious form, still feeling a little breathless. She’d found out what she needed to know. Julian could be bought.
“You don’t know it yet, “but you’re going to save me from a life I don’t want, Julian Smoke.”
She stepped out of the pool house into the cool night air and wasted no time seeking out her father.

She willed herself to be calm, to speak in the prim tones she’d perfected over the years. “Shall we start at the beginning? Or perhaps somewhere in the middle. We announced our engagement at a grand ball. And then?” She gazed out over the water rather than look at his face, afraid she might detect a falsehood.
Oh ye of little faith.
“I’d accepted the invitation to the Livingston house party, thinking you would be there.”
“I’d planned to go. But Mama took ill. I remained behind to help nurse her.”
He stirred beside her, as if searching his memory for long-ago details. “On the, er, night in question, I joined the billiard players after dinner rather than take tea with the ladies. We wagered on every game. The challenges took hours, and we all drank heavily. When I look back on that night, it was Woodley who kept my glass full. In the wee hours of the morning, I stumbled to my room. I’d sent my man to bed hours before, knowing I’d probably collapse fully clothed once the door closed behind me.”
He paused and let the remaining stones in his hand fall to the ground. “This next part is hard.”
She glanced at his bowed head. “This is the part I need to hear from your own lips, Andrew.”
He nodded. “She was under the coverlet—Miss Woodley—in her night rail. I hadn’t lighted a candle. I didn’t notice her until I had removed most of my clothes and climbed up to the bed. She laughed, a high-pitched screeching sound. I-I couldn’t believe my ears or my eyes. Then the door opened, and her mother and another lady who were just passing by in the hallway barged in.” He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes downcast.
“Mrs. Woodley screamed, ran over to me, and pelted me with her fists. Several people gathered at the door to watch the drama. I thought it was a joke. Caroline was still laughing, and I wanted to join in the merriment even though my brain was sluggish and I feared I would pass out at any moment. Her father came in, ordered everyone else out, and bellowed at me in outrage. By then Mrs. Woodley had escorted her daughter out of the room.”
He paused. “I never touched her, Em. I swear I didn’t even know she was there. They’d hatched a parson’s mousetrap and decided the night was ripe to spring it because they knew I was thoroughly foxed.”
She’d been told only part of the story. But the last part was new. Had it been a trap? There had been moments of entrapment in the ton, but most eligible bachelors were careful to stay clear of unscrupulous mamas who had unweddable daughters. Andrew had been betrothed and technically off the market. Had he been chosen because of his fondness for spirits? Many of the eligible bachelors of the ton drank to excess. That couldn’t be the reason, could it? And why?
Caroline Woodley had not been an antidote. On the contrary, she’d had many suitors, but had not accepted any. That was the perplexing part. Why go to the trouble of entrapping Cardmore and contracting a scandalous, Gretna Green marriage when eligible men surely had applied for her hand?
She hunched over and picked up one of the stones. Smooth and round, it was perfect for skipping across the water. She grasped it tightly, forming words she needed to say. “I’m still confused. Caroline was popular. She never lacked dancing partners, and a cadre of beaus followed her around. Why would she trap someone? Had she no offers?”

“Cameron’s breathing shuddered, and his expression deepened as his gaze fell over me, absorbing what was going through his mind at that moment. “There’s just something about you—”
Cameron stepped closer and cupped my face again with his hands. I could feel the sexual tension radiating between us, equivalent to a stick of dynamite ready to set off fireworks at a moment’s notice. His lips set in a thin line, slowly parting.
“Believe me when I say I’m not going to hurt you, just the opposite. I want to protect you from whatever or whoever you’re hiding or running from.” The sincerity in his words was a laser beam striking a direct hit into my soul as he stared deep into my blue eyes.
I reached up and placed both my hands over his as they covered my cheeks, suddenly feeling very exposed and vulnerable. Struggling to suppress my pending waterworks, I closed my eyes, but not before a few lone tears escaped. Cameron’s thumbs moved quickly to wipe away the wetness while his lips kissed my skin dry.
“No tears. I want to see that beautiful smile again,” he sighed.
I didn’t have any strength left to fight this magnetic pull between us anymore. “I can’t be here anymore. I need some air.” My tone vibrated against my rattled nerves.
“No. I’m not letting you run from me again.” His hands traveled down my body, coming to rest on my hips.
“I promise I won’t run. I’d like for you to take me somewhere else, I don’t care where.”
He exhaled a noticeable sigh of relief, wrapping his fingers through mine and guided me back into the ballroom across the dance floor. His other hand reached inside his suit jacket as he pulled out his phone. Everything happened so fast that before I could react, we were standing in the valet section of the hotel.

“I’d so love to continue this battle of wits, but some of us have things to do today that require a shower first.”
His eyes lower to my cleavage, mouth parting. I steadfastly refuse to allow that action to affect me in any way. Then he brashly lets his gaze travel over the rest of me like we’re still dating and he has the right to do such a thing.
I hate how many tingles I still get when he does that.
For God’s sake, have some self-respect.
“Need any help with that?” he rasps, his eyes locked on the swell of my breasts.
Images of our naked bodies crushed together in the shower assault me. Him kneeling before me. My head bobbing between his legs. Water sluicing over his ripped abdominals. His roars of pleasure echoing off the tiled walls as he comes. Unfortunately, those images aren’t fantasies. They’re memories. Which are so much harder to dismiss.
Maddeningly, my mouth goes dry, but I still manage to push words out. “I think the days of you helping me with anything in the shower are ancient history.”
His eyes shoot up to mine. “Careful, princess. You just broke your own rule.”
My pulse spikes.
We have another heady standoff where the residual lust that still simmers between us but is never addressed crackles in the air like fire embers. I know I need to say something—anything—to get him out of my room before we foolishly reacquaint our tangled bodies with a bed, but I’m coming up with a big, fat zero.
This, right here, is why I’m being so damn strict about the rules.
Because I honestly don’t think I’m strong enough to resist the temptation that is West.
Despite how we broke up—how furious he made me when we fought that night, when he said things that still linger at the forefront of my memory—I still want this man. Like, bad want him. Which has nothing to do with feelings or emotions. It’s all due to our forced proximity and the flames of our former physical connection that have yet to be completely doused.
After all, it’s not like his looks have changed in the three weeks since we broke up, as much as I prayed for a miracle that they would. I can’t make my body flip a switch and not find him objectively attractive just like that. The arousal that attraction inflicts is a pain in the ass, but it’s manageable as long as I don’t dwell on it.
Or stare at him too long.
And maybe I have a bit of a devious streak in me because I’ve kind of been shoving my body in his face at every opportunity. Not that I should give a crap what he thinks about my appearance since we’re no longer together, but there’s still my pride to consider. Which is what I was protecting when I quickly checked myself over in the full-length mirror just before he marched down the hallway and blew into my room.
It was pride that had me checking that my hair was still falling in its neat waves, that my makeup hadn’t faded, and that my boobs were supported nicely in my sports bra and peeking out the top of my workout tank. I may have also glanced back over my shoulder to see how my ass looked in these spandex pants. But again, that was pride.
It had nothing to do with reminding him of what he’s missing out on.
Okay, maybe a teensy bit.
“You going to camp out in here all day?” I ask, hands on my hips. “If so, you could have at least brought marshmallows with you.”
Tension broken, he snorts in laughter and walks backwards through the open doorway. “Holler if you need help with any of those hard to reach places.”
Then he’s gone.
And I’m left reeling.
You stupid, stupid fool! You know rule number six is the most important one of all.
Rule number six: there will absolutely, unequivocally be no mention of our past relationship.
I made that one easy to remember.
Six is one letter away from sex.
Which is the one thing I will definitely not be getting any of for the next five and a half months.
At least, not with West Devereaux.

I Once upon a time, I had lived on the edge, but I’d fallen off somehow, emerging scarred and broken. A sports car roared by, and it surprised me to discover I missed my once upon a time.
The vehicle, a red Bugatti worth more than the idiot who drove it, darted through traffic. I scoffed at the driver’s inaccuracies, skirting too close to the lines for anyone’s comfort. Precision mattered when controlling a car at high speeds—or at any speed, really. A single tap of the brake could end lives or save them. The wrong turn of the wheel could result in a crash. Such a mistake, not on my part, had cost me my once upon a time, and a chill sliced through me at the memories the red vehicle revived.
Once upon a time, my job had been to drive one of those cars, protect the man I’d been sworn to for life, and rise above all others except for him.

In typical Bradley Hampton fashion, he’d believed I’d be returning to duty. He likely still did, which would forever cause me problems. In good news for him, he wouldn’t learn the bitter truth. It’d taken the doctors a month following my return to coherency to acknowledge I wouldn’t be returning to duty.
Sometimes, I wondered if he would ever be bothered to ask what had happened to me. If he did, what would he do? Would he care? People like me often fell prey to the hope our principals might actually care about us. I’d heard the lecture when I’d been selected for my duty.
I lived to serve, and my life had no other purpose than that. Emotions only got in the way of the job.
Those same emotions had created my willingness to position my ex-boss’s Ferrari in the way I had, putting his life over mine. It hadn’t just been pride in my job. I’d cared for him. I’d cared for his haughty parents who thought the world of him but tried not to acknowledge my existence.
I’d cared.
Caring always found a way to cause me problems, and I couldn’t stop myself. I still cared.
I always would.
I scowled at the painful reminder I shouldn’t have left my cane at home. Without it, I’d put too much strain on my busted ankle even with the medical boot allowing me to walk at all. Forgetting the cane had been yet another dumb stunt induced by the pain-filled fog of a morning without medication.
Had I not been discarded, I might have gone without the incessant discomfort. Fool that I was, I’d screwed myself over with my cover story, which offered me the ability to avoid detection from the very man I’d once guarded. Along with a partial name change and a move back to my old haunts, I’d taken the hiding in plain sight thing a little too far. But what sank me was registering my magical aptitude rating at 17.2%, too high to count as a pure mundane but too low to use magic at all.
Had I gone for a saner 30.5%, I could have visited a doctor for a renewal of my prescription without having to tap out enough of my magic to maintain my ruse. To tap my magic, I needed to manipulate someone’s blood, circumventing their heart or adjusting their personal chemistry to suit my needs.
Opportunities to use my magic came few and far between, and I didn’t have access to cadavers to practice on, nor was I willing to inflict misery on some random stranger to drop my reserves to dangerously low levels.
There was only so much I could do with my own blood before I ran the risk of death.
I cursed the sports car and its idiot driver for making even more of a mess of my morning.
I didn’t need any more damned problems in my life. I needed my cane, but if I turned around and limped home, I’d be late for work. Being late for work couldn’t happen, not without a damned good reason, and forgetting my cane didn’t count. Once at the library, I could figure something out—or bribe one of my co-workers to run down the street to my apartment. If I had owned anything worth stealing, I might’ve been concerned, but my apartment did a good job of representing my bland life. With my salary, I skipped luxuries, and the little extra money I didn’t shove into a savings account went down the drain trying to rehab my foot.
Spiting the damned doctor who had sworn I’d be wheelchair bound for the rest of my life amused me. The last time I’d gone to his office, I’d done so without my cane, earning a scolding over it. I’d gotten him to finally admit I might one day walk without my boot.
My new doctor had faith in me and my mangled foot. Even on the days I faltered, she believed. With enough hard work and a few more surgeries, I might even manage without a limp.
I even understood that after successfully rehabbing my foot, I wouldn’t return to my once upon a time. Those days were gone, and for the most part, I didn’t miss them.
Okay, I missed them. I missed having a hotter than hell boss with a sense of humor, I missed driving luxury sports cars better than anyone else, and I longed to take the latest and greatest to the race track so I could play with them, as they were banned from the road for being too fast and glorious to be street legal.
Bradley Hampton liked rewarding his minions for good behavior, and he’d figured out how I’d ticked within months of hiring me to be his for life bodyguard.
I fucking loved cars.
Instead of stomping my foot at the unfairness of some incompetent driving a car I could handle better, I limped to the corner, pressed the button to cross the street, and muttered curses over my lot in life.
I loved working at the library and getting lost in a good book, but I remembered.
Nothing good came from old memories, lost dreams, and unobtainable ambitions. I’d earned a nice, quiet life, and I meant to enjoy it. Forgetting the past would just take a little more time.

My Review I know I’ve said this before, but this time I really mean it. THIS is my favorite book by Pintip Dunn. Unless I’m allowed to have more than one favorite, in which case I choose them ALL. But seriously, this is just the right lighthearted rom-com for these complicated times. It’s full of warm, engaging characters, swoony moments that are solidly of the PG variety, and so much Thai food that my mouth watered throughout. Winnie is the youngest of three girls and has grown up in the shadow of her beautiful, identical twin sisters. And for the most part, she’s been okay with that. She loves them and they adore her. With them in college now, they’re expected to find suitable spouses, sooner rather than later, as is Thai tradition. But because the Tech girls are not allowed to date in high school, Bunny and Ari use that as an excuse for why they haven’t found anyone yet. After all, one needs to date in order to learn how to date. And they use that lack of experience as an excuse. Lesson learned, their parents decide that Winnie will practice date, so that she knows what to do when she heads off to college next year. And she will practice date with longtime family friend and arch nemesis, Mat Songsomboon. It’s clear from the beginning these two will end up together, but how they get there is hilarious, heartfelt, and full of humility.
Plot Winnie and Mat’s relationship drives the plot, but Winnie’s acceptance of her role in her family, the obedient daughter, drives most of the conflict. While Mat and Winnie are now mortal enemies, they share a past that included lazy afternoons, deep friendship, and lots of laughter. That is evident even in their most contentious interactions. The more time they spend together, though, the more Winnie begins to doubt that Mat hates her or that she hates him. In fact, it takes a lot of energy to hate someone, so why put so much effort into someone who doesn’t matter? What I absolutely love about this book is that the author doesn’t take the easy way out and allow unspoken thoughts and rampant misunderstandings to keep her characters apart. Instead, they both share thoughts and feelings, awkwardly, that clears the air far sooner than I expected, and instead the author finds more difficult ways to build conflict. This made the story much less predictable than I anticipated.
The Characters As always, Dunn creates beautifully deep characters with just enough flaws to make them believable and loveable. Winnie, Mat, and the rest are no exception. Winnie’s sisters, though only secondary characters, are nearly as well-developed as Winnie. Her parents, best friend, Kavya, and the new Thai boy, Taran, round out the main cast perfectly.
Top Five Things I Loved About DATING MAKES PERFECT 1. Mat. He’s annoying at times, self-assured, bordering on arrogant, but he is loyal to the end and earns Winnie’s love the hard way.
2. Winnie. Her desire to be the good and obedient Thai daughter but also be true to herself creates a refreshing internal conflict that makes her easy to love.
3. Thai Food. So much of the story centers around Thai tradition and food is as much a part of that as anything else. From meals to treats, the detailed descriptions left me salivating for a bowl of tom yum koong.
4. Parental Love. Even though Winnie is convinced her parents’ love is conditional, they show her that nothing could be further from the truth in the best way possible.
5. Rom Coms. The subtle weaving of some of the best romantic comedies ever made was a bonus I didn’t even know I wanted.
Bottom Line The perfect light, fun read for these extraordinary times.

“Something amusing you, Jenna?” He asked.
“Yes, you.”
“Me?” His spine straightened, and the tension brewing below my waist began building momentum.
“Where’s the dominating man I know—”
“He’s not far away I can assure you.” He interrupted before I could finish.
“It’s not like you to be so willing to hand over control, yet here you are, letting me take the lead on the designs. You’re giving me an awful lot of power. You know that, right?”
“I do.” The edge in his voice was a seductive purr, making me question his agenda.
“I’m not interested in playing games, Cameron,” I replied, fully prepared to go head to head with him.
“I can assure you; I never play games.” His shoulders pushed his upper body back flush against his desk chair while his arms folded across his chest. “When it comes to business,” he added with a cocked eyebrow and a suggestive glint in his eyes. “Business aside, what are your plans for dinner tonight, Jenna?”
I stood up and took my growing frustration out on the laptop as I jammed it in my purse with authority.
“Jenna, I asked you a question.” His brusque tone startled me.
“I don’t know I’ve lost my appetite.” I lied. Irritated by his behavior, I refused to inform him of my plans for heading out of town.
“Hopefully, not because of me?” His voice softened.
Yes, because of you and your mercurial personality disorder, I wanted to say. “I’m not sure really what to think right now.” This man had me exasperated and running in circles.
“What’s with this attitude of yours?”
“My attitude?” My hand flew to my chest as if I’d been stung by his words. “You didn’t sleep in your bed? You barely spoke two words to me in the kitchen this morning. What’s a girl to think? But don’t worry. I get it. You’ve had me now, and it’s time to move on. So for the sake of both of us, let’s not drag this out any longer. I can still keep things professional as long as we are working together if that is a concern.” A sinking feeling pushed down on my chest, threatening my next breath.
“Is that what you really want?” he asked. His expression was unwavering as he studied me intently, searching for a hint as to the direction I was leaning.
No, was my gut reaction. If Cameron was having doubts, I wished he’d be upfront about them.
“Isn’t this what you want?” I twisted his words and threw them back at him.
He stood up and held his hand out to me. “I’d rather show you what I want.”
I needed to keep my composure, stand my ground, and end this now before my emotions delved deeper. However, my head and heart were miles apart as I placed my hand willingly in his.

“Please stop scrutinizing me that way.”
“What way?” His head tilted, eyes never leaving hers.
“That sexy, smiley way.” Ash’s insides fluttered.
“Whatever you want,” Cole said but kept her gaze.
Color rose, spraying her neck with red. “I’m wondering if this night doesn’t need something stronger to end it with instead of the wine.”
“Which was great by the way.” He rose from the table to help clear the few items left.
They moved into the kitchen. “I’m not a huge hard liquor fan, but I have some left over from the Halloween party. Let me see what there is.” She moved to the pantry and returned with two tumblers of whiskey. “Why don’t we have these in the living room?”
They settled on the couch and Ash flicked up the end-table lamp switch, illuminating the room with soft glow. Sitting side by side, she took a sip of whisky, relishing the burn as it went down. A cozy warmth filled her.
He downed his drink in one gulp and then shifted so their faces were only a few inches apart, close proximity making her nervous and giddy. Again, her stomach flipped, urges that she never thought she’d experience bubbling inside.
“I thought going back into the Navy would make me happy, but I see other options now.”
“You do?” Her voice turned soft and breathy.
“Yes. And one option is sitting right next to me.”
“This is moving too fast.” Ash moved back, squeezing against the couch cushions. “I think it’s time to call it a night.”
“I’m sorry if I misinterpreted the situation. I thought maybe…” He trailed off.
She studied him and wondered how honest she should be. A sigh escaped as the truth emerged. It must be the drink. “You’re right. I’m attracted to you, but it’s not that easy. I lost my husband three years ago and I still miss him every day. I can’t do this.” She couldn’t think of a way to clarify the situation further and hoped he’d understand.
Remaining quiet, his head tilted to the side, eyes trained on her. “I understand, but can I ask you a question?”
She pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and pulled her sweater cuffs over her fingers, self-conscious of the way he studied her. “Okay.”
“You aren’t allowed to have fun in bed anymore?” He smiled. “Have you left that part of your life behind for good?”
She huffed at his attempt to lighten the mood. “I don’t want an emotional attachment right now. His death is still too fresh and raw.”
“It’s been three years.” His hand caressed her knee. “Bonnie told me a little about the situation.” He paused, appraising her. “Let’s take emotional attachments out of the equation. I promise not to fall in love with you, if you promise the same. I just got out of the service, and I’m not sure where my life is headed.”
He ran a hand over his crewcut, skimming the short hair. “I could be back in the Navy in a few months. I like you. You’re beautiful and fun to be around. You have a great dog and really nice sister. How about we have some fun and leave it at that. We can go a day, a week, a month. You decide that part.”
“I’m confused.”
He stood, grabbing his jacket from the chair where she’d placed it when he arrived. “Think it over.” He moved toward the door, but then returned to her, grabbing her hand, pulling her off the couch and close to him.
Her head buzzed and her stomach muscles clenched as he dropped a kiss on her cheek.
“I hope to see you again soon.” His mouth caught hers as she was about to speak, making words flee. Longing filled her as his lips pressed against her. It was coming home and starting a new journey at once. Hunger filled her as his mouth demanded more. His lips on hers made everything else bearable. She took a step closer as he pulled away.
Ash stood dazed in the living room even after she heard the screen door bang shut.

Excerpt #3 Liam
Opening the file, I look at Pete’s report. While a sister is mentioned, there are no photographs, nor is there an age or date of birth. At the time, this missing information didn’t bother me. Now, it sends anger slithering through my veins. The answer to the problem of Kate’s coming death should have been contained in this file, not left to a chance encounter. The oversight is going to cost Pete, but for now, I smile. The sister isn’t just Kate’s younger or elder sibling. No, she is her twin. Her identical twin.
I flip through the photos I have taken, cropping and enlarging the woman’s face on the screen. There is no telling them apart. For the first time since getting Kate’s cancer diagnosis, my body relaxes.
The waitress sets my gin and tonic on the table and I dial Pete’s number.
“I’ve sent you a number of photos. You need to start explaining why you failed to tell me that Kate has an identical twin sister.”
Pete owes me, and I am collecting my debt – plus interest.
No one feeds me incorrect information without paying the price, and Pete is about to discover that price. With Charles leaving to go live in some godforsaken remote place in Scotland, there is no one to stop me.
The phone echoes with the urgent fumbling of a man not prepared to accept his fate. My lips grow thinner.
“Well, I haven’t got all day. Frankly, I’ve waited long enough. How many years is it since you compiled the information on Kate for me?” I don’t wait for Pete to answer. “I’ll tell you, Pete. Six years. Six years, and in that time, you never bothered to check that the information I paid for was complete. You know I’m not a tolerant man, Pete. Tolerance is for fools, and I will not be treated like a fool.”
“You didn’t specify how far back to go, so I only did a preliminary scan of the time before Kate was taken in by her aunt. I did inform you about the sister. The aunt sold her to a couple who couldn’t have children. You weren’t interested in the sister at the time.”
I put down my glass with a thud. The occupants of a table near me look over but are soon engrossed in their conversation once again.
“Don’t you ever try and weasel your way into thinking that this is my fault. It’s not going to go away that easily. The issue here isn’t whether I was interested in the sister at the time or not, it’s that you should have done your job properly. You didn’t, you were sloppy, and now you owe me.”
“Mr. Thornton…” Pete stutters, and I can sense him gathering his excuses.
“I wouldn’t go down that road if I were you, Pete. People like you are ten a penny. You have no living relatives, no wife or children. It’s fair to say no one will miss you.”
“Are you threatening me?” Pete sounds stunned.
The poor man really is stupid, despite being an excellent private detective. If he thinks his sloppy work won’t have any consequences attached to it, he’s a silly, silly, silly man.
“No, Pete, I’m not threatening you. I am telling you that you have twenty-four hours to finish getting all the information on Kate and her sister. And, to clarify – when I say all the information, I mean down to blood type and pimples, or you can kiss your existence goodbye. I hope I have made myself understood.”
“Yes.” Pete bites out the word like someone is holding a gun to his head and threatening to pull the trigger.
The image makes me smile.
“Good. I shall see you tomorrow at ten a.m. sharp, at my office.”
“But that’s only sixteen hours away.” At least Pete can do the maths.
“Then you’d better get going, before I move our meeting forward.” I hang up, leaving Pete spluttering into his phone.
Picking up my drink, I start working out my options.
First things first. I have to get the real Kate out of the way and into her final resting place. I will have to curb my impatience and ride out the forty-eight hours left.
The sun no longer feels unwelcome. Like my brightening mood, I find its radiance has a warming effect.
