Excerpt #1 There was a lull, and she strode through the open bays and down the small hallway to the office. “You on the phone?” she called.
“No.”
She gritted her teeth, storming in. “Billy, dammit, please tell me you didn’t take on any new customers,” she said from the doorway. “I’m slammed enough as it is.”
“No problem! As it happens, I’ve got the answer to all your problems right here,” he said, with his usual broad grin.
She wanted to strangle him. “Unless you’ve magically produced a mechanic from out of your butt, I sincerely doubt that.”
Billy burst out laughing, and she heard a low responding chuckle. Surprised, she stepped further into the office. She hadn’t realized there was anyone else there.
Oh, God. Don’t be a customer.
She stepped past the high filing cabinet, just as the other person stood up – and kept standing up, or so it seemed. The man unfolded himself from the rickety office chair, and he looked almost seven feet tall.
She goggled. She couldn’t help it. Jet black hair, wavy, curling at the ends of his collar and brushing his shoulders. Which, by the way, were incredible. Holy hell, broad shoulders. The guy was yoked. He was wearing a black T-shirt that said MACHINISTS with a skull-and-crossbones, where the crossbones were wrenches. It stretched over a chest that looked carved out of marble. He was also wearing riding leathers.
Holy shit. Her mouth went dry as the Sahara out of sheer, unrelenting thirst.
Her eyes roamed some more. She needed to stop staring at the guy’s bod, she realized. She was objectifying. She was embarrassing herself. There was an off-chance she might be struck blind by his sheer, unrelenting sexiness.
She slid her gaze back up, over what she figured was a washboard flat six-pack, and past tanned, muscular forearms. Up to his face. Dark eyes, a brown so deep it was almost black. High, chiseled cheekbones. And a smile that…
Wait a minute.
Her jaw dropped. “Jericho? Is that you?”
His smile widened.
“In the flesh, baby.”
She stared for just a second longer.
Then, like a bullet out of a gun, she launched herself at him.

Day 95 Dear Diary,
The next thing I know, Ghost Dare visits me in my room. Technically, this is a spell where Dare projects his astral body across space, but calling him Ghost Dare is just more catchy-sounding. At this point, I’m lying in bed and happily tucked under my covers while a hazy white cloud becomes a semi-transparent version of my boyfriend.
Life is getting good.
Little by little, Ghost Dare turns to me. Our gazes lock. My breath catches.
Even as a kid, Dare wields what can only be called an icy stare. Mind you, this isn’t a serial killer type of thing. It’s more that Dare’s a prince of the winter court and that place is a political battlefield. To survive, Dare always plays dozen games of three-dimensional chess at once. It enough to make anyone’s irises a little chilly.
But in this moment? Dare’s intensity holds a different edge. Although the prince may be semi-transparent, there’s no missing the desire that fires through his vision. He’s thinking the same thing that I am.
I blush my face off.
When Dare speaks, his voice holds a husky tone. “Hello, Little Hob.” The prince crosses the room, leans over the bed, and brushes ghostly kiss on my lips
“I hate it when you call me that. But that kiss was cool.”
“I’ll join you tomorrow.”
“Ghost you or real you?”
“Ghost.”
“I’ll take whatever I can get.”
Dare gives me another kiss before fading from view. And I fall asleep with a smile.

FIGHTING THE FIRE (Warrior Fight Club #3) by Laura Kaye
For firefighter Sean Riddick, Warrior Fight Club keeps the demons of his past at bay, even though it means seeing Daniela England. Her ball-busting sarcasm drives him nuts, and he knows he’s damaged goods anyway, but he can’t help but remember how good they were together that one time. Now he wants to take her to the mats no matter how much they go toe to toe.
ER nurse Daniela England has lost so much that she’s vowed never to need anyone again. Fight club helps her beat back her survivor’s guilt, but it means dealing with Riddick. The hot-but-infuriating firefighter is everything she wants to avoid, which is why their one-night stand was a mistake. Now she needs to keep her distance so it doesn’t happen again.
But when Dani witnesses Sean’s motorcycle accident, she steps up to help him recover. One on one, they get beneath all the snark and find a connection neither expected. As Sean heals, the sparks between them burst into red-hot passion—and ignite old wounds. Now there are fires all around—and they have to decide which they’ll fight and which they’ll let consume them.

Excerpt The next thing Dani knew, she was over Sean’s shoulder and being carried into the house. Up the stairs.
“Sean, put me down. You’re gonna hurt yourself, you big idiot!” She tried to twist out of his hold, but his arm was tight around the backs of her legs.
“I’m fuckin’ fine,” he said in a sexy growl. “And we both know you like getting held down, so don’t pretend that this isn’t making you wet.”
“Damn you,” she said, dizzy more from the force of her arousal than hanging upside down.
He let out a sexy chuckle as he started up the stairs to his second floor. Her thinking brain wanted her to tell him he was going to hurt himself again, but she surrendered to the baser part of herself. The part that knew Sean was right.
She was already wet.
He dropped her unceremoniously on his big bed. The gray-and-white-striped sheets were messy, and the hunter green comforter was folded back, all as if Sean had just rolled out of bed. It made it feel more intimate, somehow, like she was seeing into a part of his life that she wasn’t meant to see. She rolled to find Sean tearing the button-down off, exposing those muscled shoulders and ridged abdomen. His bruising wasn’t quite as dark now, and in places was turning yellow-green as it healed.
Dani’s gaze dropped down to the considerable bulge that filled out the front of his jeans. God, she wanted him to absolutely overwhelm her. And she knew he was one hundred percent capable of it, too.

Dear Readers, I’m so excited to share my new standalone romance, Fighting the Fire! This is the fourth book in my Warrior Fight Club contemporary romance series, which mixes military and sports romance elements to tell the story of an MMA training club which creates a found family for veterans transitioning to civilian life and dealing with their war-borne demons. In Fighting the Fire, Sean and Daniela are two of my favorite characters I’ve ever written–they’re both strong, loyal, snarky, and hiding some pretty deep hurts that in the end make them so perfect for each other. And all that frenemies tension makes the chemistry between them hot AF! I hope you love them as much as I do!

Welcome to the book blitz for I PUT A SPELL ON YOU, an adult fairytale romance, by Sarah Vance-Tompkins. See below for information on the book, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
Synopsis “Being a modern-day fairy godmother isn’t all ‘bibbidi bobbidi boo,’” the legendary Lilliana Willowbrook says. “It’s hard work, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We don’t handle cash, jewelry, real estate or revenge.”
AVIANA WILLOWBROOK had no idea that her mother is a living legend until the day the tattered old copy of “The Fairy Godmother’s Rulebook” arrived in the mail on her twenty-first birthday. Estranged from her mom, and living in Beverly Hills with her father, her stepmother and two super-achieving stepsisters, Aviana is unhappy and directionless.
Hotel heir NASH NOLAN isn’t content to use his family’s fortune, instead he’s used his computer knowledge to create a successful travel app. He’s not the kind of guy to wear his heart on his sleeve, Nash is immediately attracted to Aviana’s confidence and kindness.
But everything changes when novice fairy godmother Aviana is tasked with sparking a romance between Nash and her wicked stepsister. Will she use her powers to help Nash and her stepsister find their destiny, or will she use her pixie dust to find her own happily ever after?

Excerpt #2 When I returned ‘THE FAIRY GODMOTHER’S RULEBOOK’ was open on my desk. No one was nearby, but the old velum pages were open to reveal a woodcut etching of a fairyland scene faced with a thin slice of tissue paper. In the etching a group of fairies floated above the ground in a circle around a regal-looking woman in a ball gown as they balanced a bejeweled tiara on her head.
I slammed the book shut and a cloud of glittering dust rose from the pages. The dust cloud made me woozy and gave me the sneezes. When I recovered from the sneezing fit, my ears itched like I had poison ivy.
No surprise.
If the old book had anything to do with Mom, I was allergic to it and its contents. I stuffed the book back into my tote under my desk. Best to be forgotten. As soon as possible. I didn’t have time for fairies, or fairy tales. I didn’t believe in them when I was a little girl, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to start now.

Synopsis When Ellie is dumped by her boyfriend, she’s forced to make new friends (while watching her ex swoon over his new girlfriend) in The Secret Recipe for Moving On, a smart and funny YA debut from Karen Bischer.
Ellie Agresti’s not sure anything could be worse than being dumped by her boyfriend, Hunter, the first day of senior year.
But sharing a “life skills” class with him and his new girlfriend, Brynn? AND getting partnered with a “family” of misfits (A.J., the loudmouth; Isaiah, the horse-racing obsessive; and Luke, the tattooed stunt-biker)?
It’s a recipe for certain disaster…until an in-class competition allows Ellie to channel her angst into beating Hunter and Brynn’s team, and she unexpectedly bonds with her own group–especially Luke–in the process.
But as Ellie soon discovers, it will take more than classroom triumphs to heal her broken heart–and find herself again.
————————————————————————————–
My Review This is exactly the book I needed to read at this moment in my life. It’s delightful, delicious, and devourable. Seventeen-year-old Ellie is a recent transplant after her father lost his restaurant due to the actions of an unscrupulous employee. She arrived mid junior year where she immediately drew the attentions of Hunter and they were immediately smitten. Hunter rolled Ellie into his posse and she gained both a boyfriend and a friend group overnight, easing her transition. But when Hunter reveals himself to be the worst boyfriend ever, dumping her overnight for someone else, Ellie is left both brokenhearted and friendless since Hunter’s friends were hers. To make matters worse, she’s stuck with him and his saccharinely adorable new girlfriend, Brynn, in their life skills class, until the class bad boy, Luke, rescues her from their pod. Now, Ellie is determined to not only prove to Hunter she’s better off without him, but to take down his life skills pod by the end of the year.
Plot The plot is so much fun. Rather than just a straight-up romance, it’s more of a character growth arc with a side of romance. Ellie has a lot of growing to do, too. In fact, I wasn’t even sure I liked her in the first few chapters, but after she and Hunter part ways and she needs to forge her own way in her new high school all on her own, she becomes someone I rooted for every step of the way. Her relationship with the other members of her pod brought some of the best dialogue and moments to the book. And while I predicted early on that Luke would be a love interest before the book ended, I love that it wasn’t THE plot. The main plot is really about Ellie finding herself and discovering who she is without her BFF, Jodie, by her side every day, and without Hunter and his friend group.
The Characters I loved the characters! Even Brynn and Hunter were the antagonists you love to hate. Luke, AJ, and Isaiah, as Ellie’s life skills cohorts, were all so unique in their personalities and they truly brought out the best in Ellie. Her childhood best friend, Jodie, who only lives an hour away, makes cameo appearances and it’s clear to see why these two have such a solid friendship.
Top Five Things I Loved About THE SECRET RECIPE FOR MOVING ON 1. Ellie. For me, it’s the hallmark of good writing when an author can make me care so much about a character after I initially dismissed them as unlikeable.
2. Luke. I love him. He’s nothing like Ellie’s original assessment, but that’s because he’s complex and complicated and it only makes him more endearing.
3. Isaiah. The horserace loving, sheltered teen is one of the most fascinating characters in the story.
4. Getting Even. Ellie takes the “getting even by living your best life” approach to the limits and it’s sweet revenge.
5. Life Skills. Their “easy A” class is anything but, as all the students learn a lesson on life in a fun, unique class.
Bottom Line A delightful romance with heart and soul. I love these characters and I love the themes.

Excerpt #3 Glass shattered in the next room and footsteps crunched over the broken splinters. What had once been a tall, middle-aged man in a business suit, was now a bloated corpse in rags crusted over with blood and pus. The baked-by-the-sun Streaker wore a wrinkled face with the consistency of an old raisin. His right arm hung limply, dislodged from the socket, but both hands made continual grabbing motions.
Lacking any grace, the creature staggered to the bedroom door and stopped. It sniffed, searching out its next meal. Blood poured from Jenna’s lip, where Tundra had hit her. She wiped it away, then retrieving the piece of wood. Sensing the movement, the Streaker turned its undead eyes on her. Some of its skull had been torn away, exposing the rot. It lumbered and stumbled over the chair in its path, giving Jenna desperate seconds to ready herself. Arm raised, eyes dead and unblinking, it came, dancing with death. It reached out to grab her.
Jenna ducked, then swung low and hard. “I must have gone brain dead. I can’t think of one good zombie joke right now.”
The creature staggered back, but then surged forward. Jenna rammed the edge of the board into its stomach.
“No comeback from the undead. There’s a no brainer.”
It writhed against the constant pressure of the wood. A trail of intestines spurted out, staining the tattered remains of clothing. Jenna gagged at the stench.
“You, my good sir, are too gross for words.”
The undead groaned, plowing forward. Decaying brains leaking from its nostrils and eyes.
“That all you got for me?” She stepped back, hoisting the board, and swung. The head of the creature flew sideways, but it continued forward, emaciated fingers scratching. She drove the Streaker over to the left with a repeated, steady swing. The wood sank into a shallow layer of skin covering the undead’s overripe, bloated belly.
Upon Caleb’s return, he moved to Jenna’s side. She stepped back and leaned against the window. Caleb, hatchet in hand, forced the Streaker into a corner. A noise at the window had her spinning around. A hand shot through the glass and into the room to claw at Jenna’s face. Outside in the darkness, lifeless eyes found her. The undead rammed against the window, spraying glass. Jenna stepped away, and seconds later, a loud crack caused splintered wood and glass to fall to the floor along with pieces of the zombie’s fingers. With a catatonic stare, the Streaker pushed through the opening, tearing its flesh against the jagged edges of the frame.
Jenna flashed back to the cigarettes and matches she saw in the room. Fire was exactly what she needed now. She searched for the matchbook that had laid on the floor, but the room was in disarray thanks to the fight. Something bumped behind her, and panic rose inside her. Dropping to her belly, scanning the floor, her fingers reached under the bed.

Synopsis
His redemption might be her downfall…
Tristan has nothing left to lose. His best friend’s betrayal cost him everything. Now, he’s going to take it back. All he has to do to get the Hawks reinstated to their rightful position at the palace is track down the traitor’s younger sister and turn her over for execution. But Nim’s not the girl Tristan left behind years ago; she’s a stubborn, loyal, beautiful woman, and he can’t stop himself from wanting her.
Nim fled with nothing when the king’s favorite came for her. All she has left is the conviction that her brother is innocent—and her determination to free him. She’ll do anything…even if it means convincing Tristan to help her. But the man he’s become is a far cry from the boy she fell in love with so long ago. He’s formidably stern and deeply untrusting. She’ll just have to hope he still has a heart under that battle-scarred exterior.
When love and duty collide, will Tristan follow his orders or follow his heart?
Tristan, book 1 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.

Excerpt #1 Her wings hurt.
Not just a low background thrum. Nor the deep throbbing ache she’d left behind hours ago. No, this was constant, stabbing agony as something wrenched deep inside her with every flex of her right wing. The rest of her was faring only slightly better—throat and wrists bruised to deep purple, a clump of her long dark hair was missing. And, down her right side, a blistering burn surrounded by pits and pockmarks, flanked a deep laceration through her wing. The harsh results of catching herself against the blazing rafters in her frantic flight to freedom.
Nim flew in a haze of pain, hardly aware of her surroundings. Focusing everything she had on moving forward. Staying low against the trees. Eventually she had to take a break. The frantic pace and constant pain were making it hard to think, and she needed a moment to assess and plan. She had fled into the sky, taking nothing other than the clothes on her back and Val’s ring clenched in her fist. No thought other than to get far away.
She had flown at least a mile before she felt safe enough to hover, just for a few seconds, and tuck the ring into the small pocket in her waistband. But now she was past the initial rush of panic, and tiring fast. She desperately needed a moment to regroup.
She allowed herself to drop down a few feet so that she was in amongst the top of the trees and flew jerkily toward a massive beech, thankfully still thick with leaves in reds and golds as autumn approached. A good place to hide. The kind of place she and Val had loved to play when they were children, pretending to be warriors with Tristan. Hurt followed the thought, swift and brutal. She pushed it all away—there would be time for self-pity after she survived.

This strange little town, full of mischief and magic, is the perfect place to hide while I practice my spells and hopefully regain my powers. What could possibly go wrong? Other than accidentally summoning a mysterious male vampire who throws me off my quest and gets my blood boiling in all the right places. And my blood is exactly what Vail and his brotherhood need for their top-secret laboratory.
Who would have thought my charming royal genes could help their dangerous mission? As long as Vail keeps his fangs to himself, we won’t have a problem. His hands though? That’s another story entirely. My taste for revenge is strong, but his taste for me is stronger.
Could this be my fairy-tale ending? Or am I destined to live a nightmare?
Author’s note:
Royally Drained is a paranormal romcom with a few dark themes. This is book 1 in the VILF series and ends with a cliff-hanger.

Excerpt #2 “He’s here!” Godmother’s eyes grew wide. She patted down her dress pockets, checking for her wand before barking orders. “Pumpkin, stay in your corner. Mirror Mirror, shut up. Penelope, you’re up. Let’s see how well you remember class and elegance. You can practice for your winery soiree. If we all become this vampire’s dinner, it’s on you. I’m stupidly putting my faith in you—and him. Don’t fuck this up.”
“Godmother! Where did you learn that language?” I put a hand to my ruffled collar.
“From you. Now, get the door. I’ll pour the blood.” Her voice drifted into a harsh whisper.
I stood up, smoothing my hands down my skirt and instantly regretting my big heart. I hadn’t invited Vail to dinner to practice magic or charm. Nor had I asked him over because he had the body of a sculpted mid-century Viking and a voice that calmed and commanded me, all at once. I hadn’t even invited him over because I was curious about sex with a vampire and if the rumors of mind-blowing ecstasy were true. I didn’t plan on seducing him to find out.
Sure, I’d thought about it—a lot. In the bath, in the woods, when I was alone in bed and I was sure Mirror Mirror had fallen asleep. Vail had overtaken my fantasies ever since he whirled me around the ballroom and dipped me in the most romantic gesture I’d ever experienced. But every day I grew older, he stayed the same. The ex-prince vamp man and I would never work.
The real reason I’d invited him to dinner was to study him. He exuded an air of royalty and confidence that, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t match. But even without my princessy qualities, at our last meeting, he’d treated me every bit of a queen.
I took a deep breath, swelling my bosom, and opened the door.
Vail stood, adjusting the lapels on his jacket. The tantalizing smell of his cologne drifted into my senses and caused me to let out a long, audible breath.
He froze, raking his eyes over my best ballgown, pausing his gaze at my puffed-out cleavage.
“My lady, you look exquisite.” He bowed, licking his lips. A glint of fang shimmered beneath his smile.
“Thank you! Good evening. Come in!” My words spilled out in an unintelligible sentence that even I didn’t understand.
Whatever grace and elegance I’d once had melted away at the sight of this vampire. He turned me into a royal shitshow.

Excerpt When he doesn’t look like he wants to break things, he’s stunning. Heat spirals from my chest to my belly, a line of fire that leaves tingles in its wake.
Uh-oh.
Hoping he mistakes the cause of my red face as exertion, I cough. Loudly. “So…?”
“I don’t need anything, but it looks like you do.”
My mind cartwheels into the gutter, grabbing up all sorts of trashy thoughts. Aunt B’s romance novels have poisoned me, because all I can think about is this man—this beautiful stranger—ripping off my clothes and screwing me until I can’t walk. Preferably while whispering in my ear in a Scottish accent about all the things he’s going to do to me with his sword.
My problem is simple. It’s been too long since I had sex. Great sex, specifically. The mentally numbing kind that leaves your legs shaking and your throat sore. It’s merely bad luck that Mr. Stick Up His Ass looks the way he does. Namely, like he could throw on a kilt and some blue body paint scream “FREEEDOM!” à la Mel Gibson in Braveheart.
“Earth to Ms. Kemper?”
I blink lazily, focusing on his face. The arched brows, the pursed lips. From his tone, I gather he’s been talking to me while my brain and body took a jaunt down fantasy lane.
I haven’t been sleeping well. That’s my problem. I can’t possibly be attracted to this asshat.
“Sorry, um, what did you say?” My voice is hoarse, my face aflame.
He frowns. “I asked if you’d like some help.” He waves toward my fallen shovel. “With what you’re doing.”
“Oh! Oh. No. I mean, no, thank you.” I take the last two swallows of tea, then grab the shovel. “I’m stopping for the day. But thanks for offering, and for the iced tea!”
I book it toward the garden shed on the side of the house, not looking back.

Excerpt I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the sinful grin spreading across his face. I also didn’t have an argument for that smug remark, so I walked toward the huge rock slabs at the edge of the shore and sat down. Water splashed against them, sending mist into the air and across my face. Wrapping my arms around myself, I listened to each wave crash against the large stones.
A loud cackle grabbed my attention, and I glimpsed over my shoulder. Flames flickered into the dark sky as the fire really hit its peak. Flashing that damn cocky smirk of his, he plopped down next to me.
I rested my head on his shoulder before tapping his chest. “I’m not going to stroke your ego, so you can stop waggling your eyebrows in demand that I do.”
Trey howled with laughter. “What if I want you to stroke something else?”
I brushed my fingers along the bulge of his jeans, noting how hard he already was without me touching him. When I went to fiddle with his zipper, he released an unsteady breath and locked our hands together. A salacious grin fell from my lips. “Careful what you wish for. I think I’ve proven I’m comfortable having sex anywhere.”
“That you have, babe. It’s an incredible turn-on too. I hope it’s okay we came here. I thought about getting tickets to a show in the city or taking you to a museum, but as selfish as it sounds, I really wanted to be somewhere that allowed us to turn off our minds for a while and The Point is always a good place to take a break from reality.”
“Coming here was the perfect plan. I’ve had my fill of people for the day. The universe finally gave us a break for once.”
“What do you mean?” Trey asked, stroking my cheek.
“Usually, this place is packed, but there isn’t a soul in sight. That rarely happens, so maybe something is going our way. Let’s face it, that doesn’t happen very often,” I muttered, gazing at the dim stars.
Trey gently gripped my chin. “I can’t argue with you there. We’re both fighters, though. The world is going to have to throw a hell of a lot at us for either of us to break. You’re still one of the strongest people I’ve ever met. I know that’s probably hard for you to believe, but it’s the truth, and I don’t want you to forget it.”
As I stared into his mesmerizing gray eyes, my heart rate sped up. Being enveloped in his embrace was one of the things that gave me the courage to fight back when life pushed too hard. All those years ago, he’d been absolutely right about one thing: we were always worth fighting for.

Cordelia Kelly is busy, focused, worried about the future of her fledgling bookbinding business. When a handsome man stops her on the street to pester her with questions, she gives him the consideration he deserves: none. Stroud barges into Cordelia’s life, offering her all the material and sensual temptations she’s learned to do without. Synopsis Marry a man I barely know to save my family from ruin. It might’ve been simple, if my betrothed were anybody else.
On our wedding day, my husband-to-be arrived at the courthouse like a black cloud rolling over Manhattan. Walt didn’t crack smiles or pepper in pleasantries as we exchanged hollow vows in front of the judge. His disdain for me was so palpable I assumed we’d walk out of that ceremony and resume our regularly scheduled programming. But then fate was like, Hold my beer. I got this.
In desperate need of help and with nowhere else to turn, I had no choice but to ignore a crucial rule in our contract: I shall only contact Mr. Jennings II in case of emergency. But hey, what’s a little fine print between husband and wife?
Turns out, Walt’s a stickler for legalese—I think it might be his love language. Oh, and his attitude at the courthouse wasn’t a put-on. My so-called husband is a jerk. He takes what he wants without giving any consideration to other people—specifically ME, his blushing, contractually-obligated bride!
I knew life with Walt would be no honeymoon, but a marriage of any sort should still come with a few standard guarantees:
To have and to hold. For richer or poorer. In sickness and in health.
But after experiencing Walt’s version of wedded bliss, I say let’s forget about all that lovey-dovey crap and just take me straight to death do us part.

Excerpt That’s odd. I study the screen of my newly replaced cell phone. The number I called only rang three times before disconnecting. No voicemail. What kind of inn doesn’t have a voicemail?
Not to be deterred, I call back. This time there’s two rings, then nothing. I press Send again.
One ring—nothing.
Now I’m annoyed. I call again. And again. Six times total before the line abruptly opens and a woman snaps, “What do you want?”
I’m so stunned I can’t speak.
“Hello?” she repeats, voice dripping acid. “Chris, if that’s you, I told you I never want to talk to you again! I’ve moved on.
I don’t need you, your stupid alimony, or your half-assed justifications. Grow up!”
I almost hang up. I want nothing to do with anything that just came out of this woman’s mouth. And yet… there’s something in her voice, something I can’t quite put my finger on. Lurking beneath the rage, hidden by slicing consonants and cool vowels. Then I realize what it is.
Pain.
And like a weight has been lifted from my chest, I can suddenly speak.
“Is this the right number for Rose House Inn in Sun River?”
In the following silence, I imagine her horror and mortification. I must be a bit of a sadist, because it makes me smile.
“I’m so sorry.” A gutted whisper. “Please don’t hang up. I-I thought you were someone else.”
“Obviously.”
I pause, weighing the wisdom of what I’m about to do. Every other goddamn hotel, motel, and rental in the area is booked because of some upcoming film festival. When I stumbled on the website for Rose House late last night, the online booking was wide-open. A red flag all on its own, but desperation trumped logic. Unfortunately, there was no option to book the entire house online. Hence this absurd phone call.
If this is the standard of customer service offered at the Rose House, at least I now have some idea why it isn’t bursting with bookings. And what I can expect to endure.
“Sir? Are you still there? Again, I’m so sorry. Can we start over? My name is Zoey Kemper and I’m the new owner of Rose House. I’d love to discuss your needs.”
“I’m here. Give me a second to decide whether or not to hang up.”

Excerpt #4 She had never felt so peaceful and unhinged all at once. Speaking of unhinged. She spied Ian wandering over, two freshly filled mimosa flutes in his hands. He sat down next to her, carefully avoiding any contact with the threatening spikes extending above them. “I thought for sure you wouldn’t want to come and find me here.” Alex glanced up at the clusters of thorns.
“I would probably come find you anywhere.” His smile was so genuine that Alex’s insides did a flip flop, and she tried to remind herself who he was—who he had always been.
“Mmm,” she said, draining her current glass and reaching for the one he offered. Nothing like a little liquid anxiolysis.
“I’m surprised you didn’t leap out of the jeep this morning with your little medical bag and try to save that poor buffalo.” He seemed tipsy and cute, practically giggling at the visual he had created.
“Death is a part of life,” Alex replied dryly. “I know that better than almost anyone.”
“It is,” he said, somber for a moment before continuing. “I can’t help but wonder whether you are a buffalo—the necessary sacrifice for the wellbeing of another species—or the lioness—the queen at the top of the food chain?”
The question caught her off guard. It seemed too profound for a beautiful morning in the Kalahari when they were both mildly drunk. “A little bit of both…depends on the day,” she replied with a raise of one eyebrow. He nodded, curling his lips as he weighed her answer.“What about today?” The question was simple, but he said it so erotically that she had to staunch the desire flooding her veins.
“The thing is—being a doctor and all—I am a servant to humanity by nature.” She took her index finger and traced it along his neck in the groove between his trachea and sternocleidomastoid muscle. “But I know exactly where your jugular is.” She rose to her feet and headed back toward the jeep. She could feel him watching her the entire way.

————————————————————————————–
Excerpt #2 Ty’s deep voice interrupted my thought. “Connor, this is Ronni Miller.”
She stuck out her hand, almost shyly. “Oh, I know who you are. I love LTZ.”
Jace chuckled and excused himself. Ty didn’t bother, he was like a ninja and slipped away without saying a word. No complaints from me. Now alone, I was left sitting next to the beautiful woman with her hand enveloped in mine. I flicked my thumb over her knuckles. She smelled delicious, like a lemon-meringue pie. I wanted to eat her up.
Snapping out of our eye lock, she looked around and realized we’d been ditched. “Where’d they go?”
“Ty made his patented escape.”
“Oh.” Her nose scrunched up adorably. Clearly, this lass wasn’t used to being rejected.
“So, Ronni? Fancy a drink, love?” I turned up my brogue to eleven. In situations like this, I double-downed on my accent. Chicks dug it. It worked like a charm. I was learning that firsthand with all of the tail I’d been pulling since Jen dumped me.
“Um. Well. Sure.” She fiddled with the strap of her dress distractedly before looking up at me. She blinked once. Then twice. “I think I just lost a bet.”
Damn.
“Oh yeah? I’ve been known to gamble. What’s the wager?”
She shook her head, almost embarrassed. “A friend bet me that I couldn’t get a kiss.”
“From Ty?” I laughed heartily. Oh Lord, if she only knew.
She began to giggle. Her cheeks turned pink. “Well, technically the bet was getting a kiss from someone in LTZ.”
“How much?”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “What?”
“How much was the wager?”
She gathered her hair and twisted it up into a messy knot. “Does it matter?”
Good God how I wanted to grip a fistful of that hair and hold it tightly while I rammed into her from behind. “It does.”
She threw her hands up. “Fine. But you need context.”
“Hit me.”
“It’s going to sound so dumb. I just got out of a serious relationship and my friend is determined to get me back in the saddle, so to speak.”
Ahh. Well, well, well. We were in the same boat. With that little piece of information, how could I resist? Without hesitating another second, I bent down and licked the seam of her lips before pressing my mouth fully against hers. Her pliant lips opened. Our kiss deepened.
Ho-ly shite.
My palms threaded through her luxurious mane and caressed the base of her skull to tilt her head gently. My tongue sought hers and swirled around in a slow dance before I sucked on it. Her eyes opened in surprise at the intimacy, but she relaxed against me. Clutched my shirt in her fists.
My hands roamed downward, skimming her sides. Thumbing the underswell of her breasts before reaching around and grabbing her ass. Squeezing. Pulling her toward me so she could feel my hard cock pressing against her. Her hips gyrated against my erection, making me groan.
Before I knew it, we were going at it like we were starved. Grinding against each other. Tasting. Groping. Forgetting where we were.
More like not caring.
I could have gone on for hours because this Ronni girl tasted delicious. Like some sort of exotic fruit cocktail with a tinge of cool mint.
As much as I wanted to keep kissing her, I had a plan.
When she was well and thoroughly snogged, I released her. Held her away from my body, but lightly gripped her upper arms. She looked down at my prick, which was a clearly outlined ridge in my jeans. She turned her gaze back up to me. Expectantly.
Oh, but what good would it be if she didn’t have to work for it?
I was going all in.
Abruptly, I released her and walked away.
Turning, only to say, “You’ve got your LTZ kiss, beautiful, hope that your wager was a big one.”
If I was a betting man, and I was, she’d follow me in— three… two… one…

————————————————————————————–
Excerpt #3 “He’s here.”
“Atticus?”
“The beast.” Nevaeh picked up the pace, covertly hastening up the narrow attic stairs, taking a submissive Nora with her. “We must hurry.”
The attic door squeaked open. It resembled a preamble to a horror movie in the throes of reaching its climax. A plethora of pillar candles dotted the periphery of the largest circle of the pentagram. Flickering light heightened shadows, ghostlike on the attics planks and beams. The aroma of melting wax, sulfur, and pluming smoke plugged her nose. But there was something else. Something much worse.
Nevaeh slammed a hand over her mouth, suppressing Nora’s scream.
“Don’t. He knows you’re here. You’ll make it worse by screaming. Keep your head.”
There, in the middle of the pentagram, was her mother’s body. The beast was kneeling over her, lifting her head to his mouth.
“Taran, I wouldn’t do that,” Nora’s vocal cords vibrated, but it wasn’t her voice coming from her mouth. Swift and precise, Nevaeh readied the bow.
An aberrant kink of his head shifted his shoulders. “Who are you?” he asked, his bass-like voice remarkably inoffensive.
“It’s me, Nevaeh.” She lowered the arrowhead but kept it secured on the cord.
“You’re not Nevaeh, but you sound like her.” In a gradual guarded stance, he rose.
Nora widened her eyes and terror slithered along her spine. The beast was massive, all encompassing. When she’d fallen into Nevaeh’s journal, she’d lived the fable, an inexplicable nightmare. This wasn’t a dream. She was conscious, awake, and this was transpiring in her own home.
Browsing his stalwart form, her vision skipped past him to assess her mother. Her auburn hair was fanning the floorboards and she was wearing the same clothes she’d worn for her date with Mr. Larsen. No sign of blood or bruising. No twisted or broken body parts.
Nora wished her mom would move, even a finger, to let her know she was alive. Then she perceived her chest was rising and falling. She was breathing.
“I’m here with Nora, my human host,” Nevaeh said, leveling the arrow at him. “We are one.”
His lips parted, shards of teeth glimmered in the candlelight—his body all pulsing sinew and galvanized steel. “You’ve come to kill me, my daughter?”

Excerpt #3 They made their way down the center aisle, seats flanking them in rows of four. As Lord Brecken stopped at the third row, Lady Franklin reached out, clasped Fenella’s wrist, and pulled her toward the chairs. Then she stepped out of the aisle and sat next to her eldest daughter, leaving the earl next to Evelina. Evie closed her eyes at her mother’s audacity and wondered whether to pinch her or hug her. The voice in her head screamed in embarrassment; her heart leapt with joy.
She kept her gaze lowered, the white beaded reticule in her lap suddenly of great interest. Her eyes slipped sideways when his hand moved to rest on his lap, his thumb laying on his… fall. She sucked in a breath as he crossed one ankle over a knee, brushing her dress. Stop staring, you hoyden. It was too late. She couldn’t have dragged her eyes away if someone had shouted, “Fire!” The hem of his trousers hitched up, and he reached down to pull it back over his boot. Evie watched his fingers grip the material, a square gold ring with a B studded in tiny diamonds adorning the right fourth finger. The stones seemed to wink at her with his quick movement, and she imagined the pads of his fingers lightly tracing her cheek.
Breathe! she reminded herself for the second time that hour. Gracious, it was stifling in this room. Were there no windows to open? She licked her lips, her mouth as dry as a stone in the Sahara.
“So, are you enjoying your first season, Miss Evelina?”
His voice made her jump, guilt singing her cheeks as she forced her gaze away from his lap and up to his face. She wasn’t sure which was a sweeter torture. What would his beard feel like? Would it tickle? His lips would be soft, just like in her dreams. A sigh escaped.
“Is that a yes?” The amusement in his voice snapped her back to reality.
“Heavens, where did my mind wander?” she said, snapping her fan open. Perhaps Papa should invest in ladies’ fans. Evie might need several replacements this season.
He bent low, his eyes flashing with challenge, and whispered, “I don’t know, but I’d like to come along.”

Excerpt #2 Sebastian hands us our bottles of water and walks over to a trunk with ‘DREAMS COME TRUE’ written on it. He opens it and pulls three journals and pens out if before giving one of each to both me and Hayden.
“This is called the Wisdom Tree,” Sebastian informs us. “You write your thoughts, ideas, or dreams in these books. People add to them all the time. I thought this might be good for you, Gabriel.”
I flick through the journal he gave me, reading the thoughts, dreams, and ideas that other hikers have contributed. My heart rate increases as I consider what I should add to this. I close my eyes and take some deep breaths while I think about it. I’ve just achieved a life dream, probably my biggest one, but I know what I want. I begin to write.
I’ve worked hard to get where I am. I’ve succeeded in achieving my goals. What does it mean if I can’t have you?
It’s the thought that I’ve been struggling with since Ariana left. I thought that what we were building together could become something much more. The possibility that she might not come back to me is too painful to bear. I have to cling to the hope that Heather will get through to her while she’s back at home, and we can get through this.
A single tear drops from my face and splashes on the page, causing the ink in front of me to blur. I wipe the other tears from my face and close the book before walking over and placing the journal and pen in the trunk again.
I cough and ask, “Are you guys done?”
“Just finished,” Hayden smiles.
“I’m done too,” Sebastian nods.
If either of them notices my tears, they don’t mention them, and we continue on our way to the sign. On the way there, Sebastian stops and drops the backpack on the ground before pulling out my phone.
“You can check it if you want,” he says as he holds it out to me.
My heartbeat increases as I take it from him, and I can barely breathe as I check the screen. Nothing. I take a deep breath and fight back tears. Surely, Heather should’ve gotten a hold of her by now.
I hand the phone back to Sebastian without saying a word, or even unlocking it. He puts it away without further comment, but for the rest of the hike, my mind is a blur. I can’t focus on the amazing scenery; I can only focus on my inner turmoil. Everything is wrong. I hate knowing that I’m going to see the Hollywood sign without Ariana. She should’ve been here.
When we get to the point where we can see the sign, we finally see other hikers. Sebastian was right about the Burbank Peak Trail being a solitary hike. I see a couple of the other hikers take photos of us, but they don’t approach us.
“Should we go and try to climb the sign?” Sebastian asks with a cheeky grin on his face as he gestures to the chain-link fence protecting it.
“Pass,” Hayden laughs. “I don’t feel like being arrested today. Can you even imagine what Cooper would say?”
“You’re not talking me out of it,” Sebastian smirks, then looks at me, and his face drops. “Okay, bad idea, I guess. Well, let’s get pictures. I’ll put them on Instagram and make Heather jealous, at least.”
We take selfies in front of the view of the sign below us. I’ve gotten so used to posing for photos that when I look at the ones we’ve taken, you can’t even tell that my heart is broken and every cell in my body is aching for Ariana. I look like any other guy out on a hike with his friends.
Sebastian takes some more pictures of the view, then we have a drink of water before beginning the hike back to the car.
When we reach the Wisdom Tree again, I say, “Wait a second.”
I open the trunk and pull out another journal and pen. I open it to write another message.
If you don’t come back to me, I know the pain will fade. My love, though? That will remain the same.
I know Ariana will never read this, but it doesn’t matter. I feel better for writing it down. It’s the truth, as well. I can barely stand to think about her not coming back to me, but even if she doesn’t, I will always love her. I kiss the words on the page, wishing they were Ariana’s lips, and place the journal back in the trunk.
By the time we get back to the car, I’m tired, both physically and emotionally. Sebastian and Hayden talk on the way back to the hotel, but I’m grateful that they don’t push me to talk at all. As soon as I reach the quiet darkness of my hotel suite, I pull out my phone again and see nothing of interest. People have called and messaged, but none of them are Ariana. So, I call her.

Author Sian Ceinwen
About the Author Hi, I’m Sian Ceinwen and I live in Western Australia with my husband and two kids. I started writing this in the third person but it was just odd. A little bit about me, I’ve enjoyed writing all my life, getting the worlds and characters in my head down for other people to enjoy is my passion.

I released Gabriel and Ariana’s story, The Album, on March 14th, 2020. Harrison and Heather’s story, The Wedding, came out on June 6th, 2020. Sebastian and Lita’s book, The Baby, was released on November 18th, 2020.
The first book in the companion series, Gabriel’s Album, is available for pre-order and will be released on March 14th, 2021. It’s Gabriel and Ariana’s story retold from Gabriel’s point of view.
I hope that you will fall in love with the Cruise Control world the same way that I have.
