Synopsis She’s trying to make ends meet. He’s out for a bit of fun.
Cordelia Kelly is busy, focused, worried about the future of her fledgling bookbinding business. When a handsome man stops her on the street to pester her with questions, she gives him the consideration he deserves: none. That handsome man happens to be the Duke of Stroud, and he finds Cordelia’s hostility hilarious. He gives chase, if only for the pleasure of provoking her again.
He thinks life is a game. She doesn’t play around.
Within days of meeting Cordelia, Stroud sets a marching band on a matchmaking mama, defaces a local monument, and ropes Cordelia into a round of his favorite game. In that same time, Cordelia stitches together the complete works of Mary Wollstonecraft, enthusiastically devotes herself to a petition demanding expanded legal rights for married women, and beats Stroud at his own game.
She defies all expectations. So does he.
Most people dismiss Stroud as a fool–himself included. When Cordelia sees past his lighthearted facade, he’s terrified and also… in love? Stroud barges into Cordelia’s life, offering her all the material and sensual temptations she’s learned to do without. She usually has willpower to spare, but turning him down takes all of it, and then some. He’s oddly irresistible.
Or maybe they’re perfect for one another.

Excerpt The dog stood about eight inches tall and half as wide, exquisitely detailed, with shiny black eyes and a little pink tongue lolling out from its open mouth, painted toenails peeking out from a fringe of fur.
Cordelia picked it up and, finding the statuette fairly light, turned it upside down. A scroll of paper poked out from the hole in the base.
Ruby swore under her breath.
“Have we fallen into one of your novels?” Cordelia asked, not entirely in jest. She plucked the paper from the dog’s belly and returned the sculpture to its spot—slowly, giving herself time to gather her courage—before carefully unrolling the note.

Welcome to the book blitz for WHEN THE SMOKE CLEARS, a standalone adult romantic suspense by C. Chilove. See below for information on the book, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
Synopsis Lieutenant Colonel Brenden Jasper lives a life of secrets, danger, and clandestine missions. As commander of the most elite Black Ops unit in the world, nothing is more important to him than protecting the country he loves. But there’s a reason only the toughest, battle-tested, alpha men can call themselves members of the Black 2131 brotherhood. None but those in the highest realms of government even know of its existence, and it’s Brenden’s job to avoid emotional entanglements so he can keep it that way.
Dr. Paige Nichols has spent her life ruled by logic and reason, teaching and analyzing art history, so nothing could have prepared her for the completely overwhelming attraction-at-first-sight when she sets eyes on Brenden. Their chance encounter at a party opens her up to a tantalizing dark side she never knew she had—and leaves her wanting so much more. But a man with a dark side often comes with way too many secrets…ones that could put her life in danger.
Though their chemistry burns hotter than ever, when danger comes knocking on Paige’s door, Brenden will have to walk a fine line between duty, honor, and love.
—————————————————————————-
Excerpt #3 Her feet came back to the ground and she tip-toed, kissing him again. She missed this man in spite of him vanishing for two days without a trace. Looking into Brenden’s eyes was all she needed. She felt safe, free, and now it was possible to breathe again.
“What is it?” Brenden closed the distance between them.
Paige took a deep breath fighting against her crumpling face. “Just happy to see you, that’s all. Two days is too long.”
“Quit being a girl, Nichols.”
“I am a girl, Jasper.” She crooked her head until she could see around him. He stepped to the side giving her a better view of the kids playing with the adorable, little chocolate Lab. “Oh my God.” She stepped closer and kneeled beside the little girl from down the street. “Your dog is so cute!”
“It’s not mine.” The little girl giggled as Raja went up on hind legs and nuzzled Paige in the chest. “It’s his,” she pointed at Brenden.
Paige stroked the puppy a few times before standing. She swallowed hard before coming face to face with Brenden. His beautiful eyes took her hostage and everything she had been upset about from days past vanished. He had come to mean so much to her in a short time and the realization that she meant something more to him was at her feet.
“She’s beautiful, Brenden.” Paige gulped hard, attempting to steady her thrashing heart rate. “What did you name her?”
“Raja,” the little kids chorused beside them.
“She’s yours, Nichols.” Brenden’s deep husky voice plucked a tear from her eye. His long index finger pushed it away as his large hand cupped her neck. “Just like I’m yours. We’re a loyal breed. I’m sorry.”
Paige wrapped her arms around her boyfriend’s neck, silencing him with a passionate kiss as he held her body like they were falling against gravity and kissed her back to the depths of her soul.

Synopsis It has been a year since the fire in the Ninth Ward that solidified Maria’s place in the ranks of her grandmother’s operation.
Though tensions are high among her remaining crew, things seem to be going well…until Abuela starts moving pieces and changing the ranks.
Suspicions ride even higher when Isaiah shows up well after he left the life behind, and without an explanation.
Will Maria be able to hold it together, or will she lose Joshua and Frederick, as well? What part does Isaiah play?
—————————————————————————-
—————————————————————————-
Excerpt #2 I hear voices behind me, but I don’t have room for any more bodies in my space, so I ignore them. When I look back to Maria, she flings her eyes past me. She’s mad, too, that much is easy to see. But then the tension melts, her eyes drop impossibly wide, and her mouth silently opens.
Her obvious shock is like a PTSD trigger, and it blindsides me so that for a moment, I can’t move either. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that look on her, and somehow I expect that if I turn around, I’ll see her brother risen from the dead.
Josh moves closer to her, so that he’s almost touching her, and he glares past me. The voices behind me die, and so does the movement. Abruptly, I’m right in the middle of a silent firefight that I don’t comprehend.
I step to the side as I turn around, so that I’m at her other shoulder. Abuela’s directives be damned, I will always be her right hand. I fight the urge to draw arms within these walls as my vision lands on the offending party.
For a moment that lasts longer than I would ever admit, he looks like just another guy – an uppity thirty-something in a snob’s clothes, not packing any heat on his hip or shoulder. But the moment passes, and those angular cheeks and broad jaw are too familiar. He’s barely been gone long enough for me to forget that I took his seat only because he left.
He’s a bit thinner, a lot browner, and all kinds of dressed up. I can’t say I was torn up when he left us, but he did leave us. He turned his back on what was supposed to be his crew. Never mind that I was willing to do the same thing, on one tiny difference of condition. I wouldn’t leave without her, but he did. It made sense, but that didn’t make it OK.
Then the details begin to click into place like a well-oiled machine. The man beside him is Jorge, our most recent heroin hero, on the scene with a deal to end all deals. The guy worthy of a family dinner in his honor.
Jorge is skinny, greasy, and appalling in a general sense. He wears his long hair in a slick, low ponytail, and sports a long, equally greasy goatee. At the moment, he’s standing half a step behind Isaiah, openly assessing the threat that hangs vaguely between the other four people in the hallway.
Isaiah, here, in one of the most guarded and secret locations under Abuela’s extensive network. With Jorge, who just made a really impressive connection and got a pat on the back. What the fuck has Izzy been into this past year?
Isaiah isn’t armed, so there’s no threat, but Josh and I are formed up on Maria as though a SWAT team is about to storm the windows and doors. Whatever internal hang-ups we have be damned, nobody from the outside will ever get a glimpse of that. We stand together.
Except this isn’t even my division anymore.
Izzy’s eyes scan over the three of us, slow and methodical as one might expect, and brave. He looks each of us directly in the eyes. He doesn’t shove his hands in his pockets. He doesn’t walk away. There’s no cigarette in his hand. He just stands his ground. He’s different in his stature, more comfortable, less cautious.
He was always the best among us at reading people, but he was only barely better than me, and that’s just because he had a little empathy where I had no time for that shit. It only takes me a moment to see what Maria did to him.
She destroyed what little he had left, from whatever life he had before. He’s more like me than ever, and all it takes to tell me that is the reckless gleam in his eyes. Maybe for the first time, I can relate to him, and no one has said a word. I think he wants someone to say something. I think he wants to snap.

Synopsis For Olivia Adams, the world has always been too big or too small.
Forced to live her life caught between what she wanted for herself and the unfair choices and crazy obsession of those around her for as long as she could remember, Ollie has always felt confined and trapped. It was hard for her to imagine a future beyond the crushing control of those who wanted to make sure she paid the price for her role in a tragic accident that ruined several young lives. However, having no hope and living in a constant state of fear never stopped Ollie from dreaming of different ways to break free and how to reunite with the one person who always made her feel safe. Huck is the only one who ever made her feel like there was a place in his world, right by his side, that would fit her just right.
The world has always forced Huck Snyder to be a guy who runs either too hot or too cold.
Unwanted and barely tolerated, his temper burned hot and bright, often leading him into trouble. After the accident, he was tossed out, disowned, and forced to fend for himself. Struggling to survive, Huck quickly realized the only way he would make it was to freeze out every single memory and moment from his past. Especially those surrounding Ollie. He allowed his heart to harden into a block of ice and refused to let anyone close enough to melt it. Years have passed, and Huck has adjusted to the constant cold that permeates through his new life. He was in no way prepared for the only girl who could ever control his inner fire to show back up. Ollie is on the run and doesn’t seem to mind the chilly reception she receives when she shows up unannounced on Huck’s doorstep.
Fire and ice no longer define Huck because when he’s with Ollie, it’s easy to remember that the temperature between the two of them has always been just right.

GOLDILOCKS Out Now!
————————————————————————————–
Excerpt #1
I was a girl born to be caught forever between two extremes. And between two brothers. I grew up in a home that was opulent and over-the-top massive. Everything was accented in gold, and the artwork on the walls were originals from the masters. There were rugs and silverware that cost more than my mother made in a year as the head housekeeper of the sprawling estate. Before I could even talk, I was juxtaposed between outrageous wealth and abject poverty. I was never sure on which side of the coin I fell, because while I was privileged enough to attend the fancy private school where the homeowners sent their two sons, I was by far the poorest kid attending the academy. I received the best education money could buy, but it was no secret I was a kid bound for community college or trade school, not the Ivy League like the rest of my classmates.
I was also trapped in a bitter back and forth between good and evil throughout my entire existence. I grew up in the shadow of two boys who were as different as night and day. My mom cared for both of them like they were her own…and treated all three of us the same. That couldn’t be said for the rest of the adults who haunted the halls of the ostentatious mansion. Both boys were the same age, born mere weeks apart. One was the rightful heir to the family fortune, his mother the reigning society queen of the small, ritzy New England town where we lived. She called all the shots and was scary powerful in the right circles. Her child was the favored son. He could do no wrong in the eyes of the elite.
I knew better.
He might look like the prince of the castle, and the hero of every fairytale, but I knew he was the villain. He didn’t look it with his blond hair and bright blue eyes. He hid it well behind a perfect, pearly white smile and carefully crafted charm. He looked like a dreamboat, but underneath the polished façade, he was a living, breathing nightmare.
The other son was always an afterthought. No one wanted him. Not the mother who had him in order to blackmail his father and had quickly abandoned him after she got paid. Not the father who couldn’t be bothered to focus on either of his sons or care how hateful his wife was to his bastard child. He was gone for most of the boys’ childhoods, and when he was around, it was never pleasant. I learned at a very young age it didn’t matter how big your home was or how hefty your bank account was, you could never escape a fractured family by avoiding the problems that created the cracks in the first place.
The forgotten son didn’t fit in with the rich kids and social climbers any better than I did. He was an outcast. A blemish on the image of one of the most well respected families in the nation. He was a burden and a problem that couldn’t simply be swept under the rug. I never understood why the father brought him home and promptly washed his hands of the boy, but as I got older and started to pick up on subtle clues, I wondered if he hated his wife. Forcing her to raise the dark-haired boy who looked exactly like him was his ultimate revenge on the bossy, demanding woman who took no joy in anything other than looking down on those she deemed
beneath her.
The illegitimate son should’ve been bitter and angry that he’d been born into a family that only acknowledged him when they wanted to hurt each other. But unlike the golden child, he was easygoing and affable, not taking much of anything too seriously. He was a jokester and liked to play around. He was cute, and so much softer than his half brother. He looked for trouble and liked to cause a ruckus because he was bored in that fancy school and didn’t care about gaining anyone’s favor. He was the ultimate rebel and my very best friend in the whole wide world from the time I could walk until the moment I betrayed him.
He wasn’t the kind of guy who popped up in fairytales very often. He was too goofy, and his unpredictable temper could be scary. He generally saved his anger for only one person, his brother, but when it was unleashed, he was like a whole different person. For me, he was always the hero in every situation and story. There wasn’t a person with whom I wanted to spend all my time, or one I looked up to more than the second son. Next to my mother, he was my favorite part of my forever-conflicted life.
Much to the annoyance of the supposedly perfect son.
One treated me like a beloved little sister and watched out for me from the get-go. The other treated me like a possession, like something that belonged to him and him alone. I figured out the hard way that it was very possible to be caught between right and wrong. Anyone removed from obscene wealth would think those two things were absolute with no room for interpretation. When money was involved, right was more like a suggestion, and wrong was a judgment call. I lost count of how many times the second son was punished for outshining the first simply because it made the family look bad. It was predetermined who was supposed to shine and who was supposed to fade away, but the bastard child had nothing to lose, so he refused to play by the rules that were created against him. I grew immune to the legitimate son receiving praise for abhorrent behavior. He was a bully and a beast, and his mother encouraged the hell out of him, making everyone around him feel like they were less than.
Especially his half brother.
I was enamored with one boy and terrified of the other. I lived my life like a human ping pong ball bouncing back and forth between them. One was my savior, the other an enemy I couldn’t escape. One tried to protect me with everything he had, while the other used my one and only weakness—my mother—to manipulate me and make me behave exactly the way he wanted.
If my life were a fairytale, when the second son promised me a life beyond everything I knew, I would have believed him. I would have waited and trusted that there was going to be a happily ever after for at least one of us.
But my life was more like a horror story. The golden child always got his way, and not only did I throw away my life and any chance at happiness, I also betrayed the only boy who ever made me feel like I belonged. In the end, I was more of a villain than the perfect, wicked boy I hated with every fiber of my being ever was.

Excerpt I roll the Indian into the garage lot, and park it. I let the engine growl for a bit before I shut it off. The only time I enjoy turning heads is when they hear this streamlined beast coming. This bike came back from the dead. Only true fans could understand.
Josh is already here, the garage door is up, and so is his hood. A greased-up Cajun by the name of Spanky is checking out the car’s guts. I think that’s his name, anyway.
Spanky is one of the few associates of mine whose interest lies almost solely in a legal trade. He knows where to get old parts for real cheap, and though sometimes I don’t know what the fuck he’s saying to me, he’s reliable. He owns the place, and for a fat sack, he lets me use his space when he can. He’s used to seeing the Caddy. The Challenger is a new treat.
I swing a leg over my bike, then replace my road goggles with my wire-framed glasses. The days are fading earlier the closer we get to fall, and the air has cooled from the mid-summer shroud of humidity and heat. The ride over was nice, wind against my face, carrying what last bits of aggravation lingered from the earlier part of the day.
Everything changes tomorrow, but tonight, I’ve agreed to do a tune up on Josh’s Challenger. He offered me money, but I won’t take it. I just want to get elbow deep in that machine.
I’ve dressed down in a pair of stained jeans, my old motorcycle boots, and a pristine white t-shirt. It’s something of a ritual, the process of getting a clean shirt dirty. I can hear Spanky jawing at the engine in an appreciative tone, and I smirk as I approach. Josh is watching Spanky’s backside with a look of confusion, which he turns on me, like I can somehow explain.
I say, “She’s a damsel, eh, Spanky?”
“Daaaaayum straight,” he answers, with a drawn out “Wooooooeeeeee” as punctuation.
He straightens and gives me a half-cocked grin. The grease on his cheeks makes what’s left of his teeth seem almost white. Somehow I think under that layer of muck, his skin is pale as a newborn, and he never sees the sun without a solid mask of grit.
He points at a large dirty cooler full of ice and clear beer bottles, and says, “Youawnt’un?”
I shake my head and hand over a rolled-up fast food bag, which contains a few flat, oozing burgers and his weed. His eyes light up when he sees it. As much as he’d love to stay and drool over Josh’s toy, he’d just as rather go get high and down some disgusting food. He nods to us, and disappears into the bowels of the garage.
“What the fuck?” Josh mutters under his breath as he snags a beer for himself.
He eyes the label, Miller High Life, and his expression turns down in distaste. It’s so haughty that I almost give him shit for being such a picky bitch. He pops the top anyway and takes a swig.
I’ve been riding for a while, so there’s already a layer of road dirt on my face. It was the best way to find the space to breathe after everything clicked just out of place at the Garden District house. That moment has been carefully boarded up and stored for later inspection.
There’s a strange ease in knowing the secrets are out, at least as far as our inner crew is concerned. The mandate has been passed, all applicable parties have been notified. Effective immediately. Except not really. Tonight I’m a free agent, floating too far from the ground to control my landing.

Excerpt #2 I closed the door and pinned her up against it. Her purse and bag fell to the floor as I crashed my lips into hers, keeping her hands above her head. Resorting to sex to calm her was a bad habit, but it was obvious neither of us were ready to talk about our current demons. Rolling my hips into her, I tangled her tongue with mine until she whimpered.
“What brought this on? Not that I’m complaining, but you were dead set on making me suffer less than ten minutes ago,” Bri moaned, bucking her body into mine.
I gently bit down on her bottom lip before deepening our kiss. Keeping one hand secured around hers, I slid the other one down her gorgeous face to the buttons of her jacket. Once they were unbuttoned, I swayed away from her and tugged off her coat.
“I don’t know what’s really on your mind. If you won’t talk to me, then I’m going to make sure I do everything I can to chase away whatever’s bothering you before we part ways,” I growled, rocking roughly into her.
As I slid down my jeans, her eyes remained wide with shock. Bri went to grab my hard erection, but I shook my head and hiked up her skirt. Moving her panties aside, I plunged a few fingers deep into her throbbing pussy. Feeling the slickness between her thighs made even more blood surge to my dick. I glided my hand along her clit, cherishing the moans coming from her.
She banged her head against the door and groaned, “Whatever you do, please don’t stop.”
I picked her up and walked over to the first wooden desk in sight. She attempted to wrap her legs around me, but I turned her around and pressed delicate kisses between her shoulder blades while teasing her with my cock. Bri wiggled her ass, begging me to take her, but I kept moving just enough to keep from sliding into her.
Her breaths came in pants as I caressed her ass. Without warning, I spanked her before pounding deep within her. She yelped and gripped the sides of the desk until her knuckles turned white. I carried on at a ruthless pace for several minutes. Her strangled moans brought on heady waves of desire. I couldn’t get enough of her.
“I don’t know what it’s going to take for us to open up more, but I’ll get us there if it’s the last thing I do,” I promised, pulling out and spanking her ass again.
“Your domineering side tends to rub me the wrong way most of the time, but if it means you’ll fuck me like this whenever you’re frustrated with me, I think I’ll learn to live with it,” Bri declared around a loud moan.

Excerpt I ran my fingers down her pink cheek, but was quickly distracted by some commotion near the entrance. After spotting a guy in a ski mask, an icy chill coasted down my back. From a distance, it looked like one of Cassidy’s friends. I expected him to march over to me, but it became clear it was just a couple guys horsing around. They made their way toward the kiosk to grab some coffee. As they did, the guy I initially saw pulled off his mask before slapping his buddy on the back.
Bri cleared her throat to grab my attention. Her gaze was inquisitive as she stared at me, so I did exactly what she did to me when I tried to read her and took another long sip of coffee.
“Do you want to crash at my apartment or go back to yours?” I asked, setting down my cup and ignoring the way my skin continued to crawl.Bri eyed me with caution. “It doesn’t matter to me. Yours would probably be better. The girls still aren’t the biggest fan of you and think I’m insane for believing things will actually be different.”
I scowled. “We’ll go back to mine.”
“It’s going to take a while for everyone to come around. Kylie and Peyton aren’t the only ones who’ve weighed in on us,” Bri murmured, twisting her hands together.
“Yeah, I’ve gotten an earful from Micah, Shane, and Mia. After what happened last Friday, I think Jackson is laying low with everyone, but when he does resurface, I’m sure he’ll toss in his two cents,” I grumbled, keeping my eyes on the granite flecks in the table.
She tilted my chin up. “They can say what they want, it’s not going to make a difference to me. I’m not going to let anyone get in the way of us being together. I know you won’t either.”
As I stared at her flawless face, the piercing pain in my heart faded some. Her eyes searched mine and tranquil waves flowed through me. I rested my hand over hers, savoring the way she could chase away any awry feeling within me. Somehow over the years, she’d gotten even more beautiful, but that wasn’t what drew me to her the most. The kindness in her soul still left me in awe every day. I could live for a thousand years and never measure up to it.
Bursts of desire swept through me, and I brushed my lips across hers. Apparently, it was far too brief for her. She grasped the back of my neck and intertwined her tongue with mine. I returned the kiss with just as much fervor. After exploring every aspect of my mouth and lingering around my tongue ring, she released a heady moan.
A few people groaned as they walked past us, so I reluctantly pulled away. Bri sucked in a few breaths before raising her eyebrows. I shook my head to regain my wits. It was still far too easy for me to get distracted by her amazing mouth and body.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you, what led to Peyton beating the crap out of Jackson? She never lets guys get to her, so it was odd to have that be the catalyst to you being in cuffs. I mean, I’m all for you in handcuffs, but not under those circumstances,” I said with a sinful grin.

Synopsis The things I see aren’t for the faint of heart.
And I am no longer willing to ignore them. Not even when my family, and my best friend, tell me to keep quiet about what’s happening. They say people will think I’m crazy.
Maybe I am.
But the spirit haunting my professor’s house is definitely trying to tell me something, and I’m the only one who can see it.
The one person who can help me is my best friend’s brother. But I don’t know if I can trust him or his friends. Or if I can step outside the protective bubble I’ve built around myself.
At this point it’s a toss up: the ghosts will kill me or my panic attacks will.
Either way, I figure I’m going to die.
———————————————————————————–
Excerpt Then there was my second reason for being at the library today. If I truly wanted to help this ghost-girl, then I needed to learn more about my sensitivity and any abilities that gave me—and people like me.
I frowned down at the top of my white coffee cup. Remembering this topic made me recall the events of the night before—
“Bianca?” Finn’s shocked voice broke through my thoughts. My eyes shot up. The blond-haired man was pushing past students in line at the coffee shop in order to reach my small, round table. “What are…”
“Hello, Finn.” I smiled at him, hoping the guilt from my lies didn’t show on my face. “How are you? What are you doing here so early in the morning?”
Finn’s mouth dipped, and he didn’t respond at first. Instead, he set his leather backpack on the floor and sat down in the seat across from me. “It’s not early. And I come here every day—to study. But”—he leveled a suspicious look at me, his gray eyes calculating—“you don’t.”
I raised an eyebrow in response, but he continued, “I got your message last night. Why did you cancel our meeting? What’s going on? I was worried.”
Sure. I could tell how worried he was when he didn’t even care if the ghost killed me.
I picked up my cup and blew on the rising steam before I answered, trying to sound nonchalant. “I do have homework too. Plus, I like reading. It’s not unheard of for me to come to the library, you know.”
“All right,” he conceded as he continued to study me. “But you only come late at night, when most people are partying. In fact, how can you even stand to be awake before ten in the morning?”
Darn him, he was right.
“The magic of caffeine.” I sipped on my coffee again, as if to prove my point. “Lots and lots of caffeine.”
His lips thinned, but he nodded. From the wary look in his eyes, he knew I was hiding something. But he seemed inclined to let it drop.
Instead, he pulled out his laptop and opened it—ready to do his technology thing.
That was kind of nonsensical. “Finn, why are you setting up? The library opens in less than ten minutes. Won’t you just move again?”
“Yes.” Finn began typing. “But that’s ten minutes worth of work that I’ve gotten done. I am busy right now, and I’m behind…” His voice trailed off as he frowned at the computer.
He was weird.
“I thought you finished your work for the semester already.”
Finn distractively waved his hand. “It’s not that. Don’t worry, it’s nothing that concerns you. I’m working on family stuff. My mother needed me to check into something. Where did you go last night?”
I ignored his question. “Your mom has you doing corporate work?”
“Something like that.” He looked up finally, his gaze meeting mine. My heart suddenly jerked—he was displeased. But about what?
After a silent moment, the look passed and he grinned warmly at me. “I’m glad you are here with me,” he said. And in an unexpected move, he shut his laptop and pulled one of my hands into his own. “I work better with you around. You inspire me. I don’t know what I’d do without you, Bianca.”
I almost choked, and my face exploded in heat. This was the side of Finn that always managed to catch me off guard—the one that made me think I meant as much to him as he did to me.
And every time, I acted like an idiot. “I do? I—I’m glad I could help.”
“You do.” He traced his thumb over my knuckles. My face grew warmer at the action and his grin grew. “We should work together today. Are you going to be in the library all day? Sit with me.”
My warm feelings vanished.
I averted my eyes, unable to stand his intensity. He couldn’t know what I was researching. “Maybe…”
“Maybe?” Finn sounded surprised, and when I looked up, he was watching me with raised eyebrows. After our gazes met, he let go of my hand. “You don’t want to sit with me?” He paused, and an expression that I had never witnessed from him before shone in his serious eyes. “Bianca, are you meeting someone else?Have I done something?”
“No!” I vehemently denied, somewhat frightened at the intensity of his reaction. He was being terribly possessive. Especially for someone who had never even asked me on a date. I would have remembered if he had done so, because it was, after all, an event I had been dreaming about for years.
Or, was he only upset because he was afraid I had replaced him as a friend?
I was so confused.
I fidgeted as I tried to think of a way to redirect his attention. “I have research to do today. In fact, I might not even be here all day. I planned on going back and forth between the library and greenhouses.”
He rested his chin on his fist as he watched me. “You’re a terrible liar. The greenhouses are on the other side of campus, and you’re wearing a skirt.”
I froze, the fabric he mentioned clenched in my fist. Finn was right, of course. I never wore skirts when working in the conservatory. “Um…”
“What have you been up to—today and last night?” Finn studied me, his eyes demanding answers. “Are you lying to me about something?”
I grew more flustered as the seconds passed. I had to think of something!
He had made his point clear two days ago, and I couldn’t bring up that topic again. Even outside of meeting Damen, he’d never believe what Damen had said about me being a sensitive. Plus, if he knew I was involved in anything paranormal—especially trying to talk to a ghost—not only would he get involved, but so would my parents.
I couldn’t go through that confrontation with him again. Even if he—and everyone else—thought it was for my own good. It would break me this time.
So I had to think of something that would guarantee Finn would have zero interest in being anywhere near me today. A topic that would make a male flee in terror. Something awful.
“I—” My mental resources screamed out ideas, but nothing brilliant came to me. Lacking anything else, I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “I’m doing a research paper on how human placenta usage in gardening may or may not be nourishing to the soil.”
Finn’s mouth was opened in shock, and my face burned. But I couldn’t stop now. “I have a theory that if you grind up the pla—”
“Stop!” Finn’s complexion was slightly green as he watched me in horror. “That’s great for you, but I really don’t need to know anymore. Please.”
Crude, but effective. It had worked.

See below for information on the book and series, buy links, an exclusive excerpt, and details on her giveaway.
FIGHTING THE FIRE (Warrior Fight Club #3) by Laura Kaye
For firefighter Sean Riddick, Warrior Fight Club keeps the demons of his past at bay, even though it means seeing Daniela England. Her ball-busting sarcasm drives him nuts, and he knows he’s damaged goods anyway, but he can’t help but remember how good they were together that one time. Now he wants to take her to the mats no matter how much they go toe to toe.
ER nurse Daniela England has lost so much that she’s vowed never to need anyone again. Fight club helps her beat back her survivor’s guilt, but it means dealing with Riddick. The hot-but-infuriating firefighter is everything she wants to avoid, which is why their one-night stand was a mistake. Now she needs to keep her distance so it doesn’t happen again.
But when Dani witnesses Sean’s motorcycle accident, she steps up to help him recover. One on one, they get beneath all the snark and find a connection neither expected. As Sean heals, the sparks between them burst into red-hot passion—and ignite old wounds. Now there are fires all around—and they have to decide which they’ll fight and which they’ll let consume them.
————————————————————————-
Excerpt #1 As Daniela dropped her bag on the bleachers at Full Contact MMA, her bad day had her sighing. “Maybe I just need to beat the crap out of something—or someone.”
A warm breath at her ear was all the warning she got. “Got anyone in mind, Daniela?”
Sean Riddick said her name as if his tongue caressed every letter, and she cursed the shiver that raced up her spine—the shiver that resulted from knowing exactly how damn good his tongue felt. She turned slowly, lazily, as if she were bored to tears. No way was she letting him know he got to her. So she gave him a once-over that she hoped read as full of disdain.
Even though, damn. DAMN.
So tall she had to tilt her head back to roll her eyes at him. Dark hair cut short because it curled when he let it get even a little length to it. With scars near his eye and hairline and a nose that had been broken, his face was too beat up to be handsome. But it was even more interesting for having character—of the fearless, I-run-into-burning-buildings-to-save-people-and-sometimes-get-hurt-doing-it variety. And then there were the tattoos—on his neck, shoulders, arms, the back of one hand, not to mention the hard muscles underneath, because of course the guy was freaking cut, with shoulders like mountains and thighs like tree trunks. Sean oozed unquestionable strength and a fierce masculinity.
He knew he looked good.
He wasn’t wrong. Damn him.
And damn her for being stupid enough to find out just how good he was. Just that once.
But it’d been enough to keep her body attuned to him even as her head screamed been there, done that, shouldn’t have done it the first time and ain’t doing it again.
Dani sniffed. “Not you.”
His grin was pure wicked sin. “You sure about that?”
She sighed. “Absolutely.”
He gave a low chuckle. “Well, you’re welcome to try to beat the shit out of me any time.”
“Don’t you have anyone else to irritate?”
“Oh, I irritate you, do I?” he asked, dropping his bag to the floor. He winked at their friend, Tara. “Hey, T.”
“Hey, Sean,” Tara said, amusement plain in her voice.
Just then, one of the few other women who belonged to WFC walked through the door. “Oh, Jayne’s here,” Dani said, surprised because her friend hadn’t attended in weeks.
Without another word to Sean, Dani and Tara left him to greet her.
Halfway across the gym, Tara leaned in close. “Seriously, do you really dislike Riddick or are the two of you in a perpetual state of foreplay?”
Dani threw her a look that made the other woman chuckle. “Ugh, you really can’t tell?”
Tara twisted her lips and shook her head. “Nope. But something’s different between you guys lately, and I’m dying to know the story.”
“There’s no story,” Dani said. Probably too fast. Definitely too fast, given that Tara had also picked up on the heightened friction between them. Because, of course, there was a big freaking story.

Synopsis It’s all fun and games until someone falls in love.
Six years after the cops found Ear Assassins’ lead singer dead of a drug overdose, his widow Lydon Johnson has only just begun to pick up the pieces. Now she finds she’s fast running out of money to support herself and her son. A reality TV show is an unappealing means to an end, but in the interest of keeping a roof over their heads, she signs on. But the producers soon find out, Lydon’s kind of boring for a rock and roll widow.
Vince Davis, lead singer of Anthem, is a rock and roll legend two decades in the making. But when the head of his longtime record label is exposed as the cause of his son’s drug overdose, his attempt to split his band from the label comes with a personal cost that he’s not sure he’s ready to make.
Enter Lydon. Vince has an idea to spice up Lydon’s flailing reality show: pretend to be lovers. Thrust back into a glowing spotlight, can Vince’s amped star power get Anthem out of their contract on his own terms?
The reality TV producers think it’s a match made in rock and roll heaven. What could possibly go wrong?
When you hate the person you are supposed to fall in love with, LOADS.

Vince accommodated a lot from the media. Hell, he basked in their attention. There weren’t too many off-limits questions in Vince-landia, and the press mostly played by the rules. Alice Monroe, the crypt keeper of Anthem’s media machine for decades, made sure of it. No one wanted to cross Alice. The woman was ruthless.
Alice, however, was not my publicist. My only protection was Vince, and he wasn’t exactly trustworthy.
Because Vince Davis was a rock god.
Alice hustled him toward another microphone while I lagged behind on the carpet. I felt exposed, just standing out there with no protection. They all wanted a sound bite from Vince, especially since his ex-wife landed a reality show that was doing “boffo” ratings, in Variety-speak. He was careful to dance around those questions.
“Lydon! Lydon!”
The shout of my name had me scanning the line of press, all crammed behind the stanchions. They all ignored me.
“Lydon, over here!”
My head twisted. Alice, looking annoyed, took me by the arm and marched me to a small, elevated table with two barstools on either side.
“Lydon, Jessica Phelps from Reality Bytes. Jessica, Lydon Johnson.” Alice pushed me down onto the stool and hissed “Play nice” into my ear before scurrying back to Vince before he got himself into trouble.
Ugh. Reality Bytes, a ghastly half-hour celebrity news show that had begun as a reality TV “news” program. While they still mostly covered the reality genre, they showed up for big red carpets to do live remotes. They had a massive viewership.
“Richard, give Lydon the microphone,” Jessica snapped at her camera guy.
Richard, a rugged-looking twentysomething with one of those hideous lumberjack beards, shoved a mic in my hands.
He gave a short count in. Jessica’s bleached smile was blinding.
“Lydon Johnson, so fun to see you here with Vince Davis.” Jessica wiggled her eyebrows suggestively. “Dying to know, who are you wearing?”
“Rhode to Ruin,” I said with a practiced smile. I say “practiced” because Vivienne made me say it over and over again while I got ready so that I didn’t forget.
“Never heard of Rhode to Ruin,” Jessica said. There was a small sneer to the words, like she was disappointed that I didn’t rate the attention of one of the big-named designers.
“I’ve always preferred to work with independent designers. Much more edge, don’t you think?”
“Of course, you are from a rock and roll dynasty, you would want edge.”
Her laugh sounded like two plastic sheets rubbing against each other.
God. I wanted to wither right there. I glanced down the press line. Vince was still holding court. It would take him at least two minutes to extricate himself from the interview and make his way over here. Two minutes felt like an eternity at these things.
That was when something hit me.
Literally.
Something sailed over the heads of the security and publicist details, landing in my lap.
“What’s this?” I asked, picking up a Chanel powder compact.
A lipstick case flew over and landed on the small table before rolling off onto the carpet.
“Oh, look!” Jessica jumped off her stool and started waving. “It’s Pamela Davis, from Mother of Rock.” She stopped bouncing to look at me and then at the camera, which was still rolling. “Well, isn’t this awkward! Pamela, come say hello to Lydon!”
My smile froze in place as Pamela Davis, Vince’s soon-to-be ex-wife, unsteady on her stilettos, barreled toward us.
It was like I was suspended in the tense, short moments before a train wreck, when you brace for impact because there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Author Elle Greco
About the Author I write fiction about badass women (and the people they love).
Urban Fantasy lovers will know me as Karen Greco, author of the best-selling Hell’s Belle series. My Contemporary Romance books are written under Elle Greco. While the genres are worlds apart, strong female characters are the chain that links all my worlds. These women are magical. They wield wicked weapons. They play a mean drum solo. They fall in love. They rule the boardroom and the bedroom. Whatever they do, they do it with swagger.
My storytelling career began when I forced everyone play “make believe” with me when I was a kid. That eventually morphed into banging out short stories on my mom’s old manual typewriter. As I got older, I graduated to penning bad poetry, then not terrible plays as a teenager. I studied playwright in college but my career took a detour and I ended up working in journalism and then entertainment publicity, which kept me busy for 20 or so years.
My “day job” has taken me from gritty rock clubs in The Bowery to glam red carpets during movie premieres and awards shows. My background working with talent (and the suits) in the industry has served me well with the LA Rock Star Romance series. A few years ago, I decided to pursue my original passion and a few full-length novels later, here we are. I love anything spooky and impossible to explain. If you love hanging out in cemeteries, the older the better, I’d totally go on a road trip with you. I have two rescue dogs, a patient husband, and an awesome kid.

Synopsis April Davis totally has her life in order. Ha! Not really. Yes, she’s the Calm Mom—a social influencer with a reputation for showing moms how to stay calm and collected through yoga, even when life is going totally off script—but behind the scenes, she’s barely holding it all together. Raising tiny humans alone is exhausting, but that’s just the chewed-up cherry on the melted sundae of her life. Her kids aren’t behaving, her husband left her for his skydiving instructor, and her top knot proves she hasn’t showered in days.
Jack Gibson has one job—to ensure the media conglomerate that has purchased April’s brand makes money from it. Lots and lots of money. To do this, they’re expanding her influence from Instagram and her blog to a podcast and MyTube channel. There’s even talk about a Calm Mom cookbook.
When a video of the “always chill” April goes viral and she’s most definitely not, Jack is pulled in to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Suddenly, the guy with no intention of ever having children is lost in the land of the tooth fairy and toddler tea parties. When sparks fly between Mr. Mogul and the Calm Mom, he’s not the only one out of his depth. Together they’ll have to figure out if keeping it all together really can lead to happily ever after…
