Excerpt “And another thing!” My mother fumes.
This is her fourth and another thing and it’s about three more than I have the patience to hear.
“I don’t think you realize how lucky you are, especially since this is a second offense,” she says, sloshing her energizing smoothie out of her glass as she gestures.
“It wasn’t as bad as everybody’s making it sound,” I grumble.
“You threw her to the ground!”
“She shoved me first!”
Mom sucks in a deep breath, shoves her manicured hand through her hair, shoots my Dad a look and goes on.
“They’re willing to let you both off with a week of full suspension, followed by eight weeks of after-school detention since you and Maya are both honor students.”
“And since you and Dad make significant donations to the school,” I point out.
Mom pulls in another breath and closes her eyes as if she needs a minute to keep from screaming at me. Like she ever would. My mother is not a screamer. She’s a salesperson. Right now she’s trying to figure out how to turn this entire situation into a lesson for me that will yield a net result of me living my best, most radiant life because that’s a win for her.
Dad, who has been sitting quietly all this time, letting her have the spotlight, clears his throat and finally speaks.
“Being a donor is a definite advantage in this situation,” he agrees. “But you’re not going to buy your way out of this. You’re serving detention with the Rodriguez girl—and the school counselor.”
“But I’ve got two AP classes!” I protest. “And a job.”
“You’re going to have to back off work. Realign your priorities,” Mom says.
“We told you before to stay away from that girl,” Dad reminds me. “Why don’t you just avoid her? I should think you wouldn’t want to stir anything up, anyway.”
“She’s been harassing me from the day she came back.” I tell him miserably.
Dad’s eyes narrow. “Make me a detailed list of everything—all the social media, all the comments in the hallway—anything else she’s done to deliberately harass you.”
“Why?”
“I assume the school has a bullying policy. If I get Hazleton and Farr involved, we may be able to get her removed.”
I swallow hard. Hazelton and Farr is the law firm we have on retainer. “Like, get Maya expelled?”
“It doesn’t have to be that ugly,” Mom says, tapping a finger on the table as she muses. “I’m sure the school and her mother will come to some sort of understanding that doesn’t reflect too badly on her record.”
I shake my head and something in my stomach turns over. “Then everyone will just talk about how my rich parents and their lawyer ran Maya out of school. Just like they talk about how my rich parents and their lawyer got my brother out of a manslaughter charge.”
Dad’s mouth tightens into a thin line. “When you hear that sort of talk, you need to bring it to the teacher’s attention.”
“Absolutely.” Mom nods her head. “We’re not paying them good money to let gossip drag our family name through the dirt.” She turns to Dad, puts a hand on his arm. “Maybe you should talk to Jerry.”
“Davis?” Dad rubs his chin. “I supposed he could speak to the principal.”
“Who’s Jerry Davis?” I ask.
Mom waves a hand. “He’s on the school board. He golfs with your father.”
“Ugh. No.” My voice comes out a little too loud. “Just let me deal with this, please.”
“But you’re not dealing with it,” my mother points out.
“Stay out of it.” The words come out through gritted teeth. “You’ll only make things worse. Harder.”
Mom raises her brows and turns her head to share a look with my father. He shrugs in return and she narrows her eyes at him, clearly hoping for a stronger response.
“Look,” I let out a sigh. “You said we have to learn to deal with each other. So let us do that. In our own way.”
“Very well,” she finally agrees. “But any more shenanigans, and we’re getting involved. I guarantee you won’t like it.”
I push to my feet. “I don’t do shenanigans. Nobody under the age of forty does shenanigans.”

Excerpt #2 They exited the apartment, and outside, Raheem slipped dark sunglasses over his eyes and surveyed the street filled with passing cars and briskly walking pedestrians. He didn’t always wear shades, but they served a practical purpose when he worked close protection. In addition to shielding the eyes from direct sunlight, flashes, or glares, they kept eye movements hidden from potential attackers. As security personnel, his eyes constantly roved the immediate area around the principal, and this simple fashion tool made it a little more difficult for a would-be attacker to know where he was looking and which way he was going to move.
The first thing he noticed was Morris talking to the doorman, his back turned to the Mercedes. Raheem realized he had forgotten to let him know they were coming downstairs. Because he’d been distracted—by Katherine’s scent, the urge to caress her skin, and his own long held attraction to her.
Morris and the doorman were both laughing heartily at a joke, and Raheem’s temperature spiked.
“Morris, can I talk to you for a minute?”

“I didn’t alert you, but what the hell is going on here? Why aren’t you paying attention to the car?”
“What do you mean?” Morris asked.
“Have you already swept the vehicle?”
“Of course. I do a sweep every morning,” Morris said, sounding offended.
“Then why don’t you have eyes on it?” Raheem demanded.
Morris’s cheekbones flushed pink. “Do you really think someone could do anything to the vehicle with me standing right here?”
Do you really think it would be hard for someone to do something to the vehicle? How difficult would it be for them to attach a tracking device or an explosive to the undercarriage while you’re yakking it up?”
Jaw tight and more color flooding his cheeks, Morris didn’t respond, probably knowing Raheem was right.
“It’s okay,” Katherine interrupted.
“No, it’s not okay,” Raheem said angrily.
“Morris is very good at his job,” she said, her glare signaling he should stop.
“Why did you hire me? To make sure you stayed safe.”
“I would appreciate it if you don’t talk to me in that tone.”
“And I would appreciate it if you’d let me do my job.”
He didn’t care Morris was silently watching the exchange. Katherine had to learn to trust him. He turned to Morris. “We need to do another check of the vehicle.”
“I’m going to be late for my meeting,” Katherine said.
“Then you’ll be late,” Raheem said.
Her eyes flashed at him. “May I speak to you privately for a moment please?”
She didn’t wait for a response and stalked away—heels clicking the sidewalk and the natural sway of her hips catching his eye. While Morris checked the car, Raheem followed and Katherine swung around and faced him.
“Do you have to talk to me like that in front of Morris?”
“You have to let me do my job,” Raheem grated.
“I have no problem with you doing your job, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to talk to me however you please. You work for me,” she enunciated.
“Exactly. And my job is to keep you safe.” He removed his sunglasses and challenged her with a stare. “If you don’t like my methods, fire me.”
Katherine’s chin tilted a little higher. “Keep pushing me and I will. Get that damn chip off your shoulder.”
She swept past him and went to talk to the doorman. After Morris finished checking the vehicle, they all climbed in and took off.

Simone raised an eyebrow. “Dressed like that, how could you not?” He reached for her hand. “It sounds to me like you need a good, home-cooked meal to strengthen you before the attack.”
Tiffany groaned. “Not again. I had to hold my breath to squeeze into this dress. Your cooking will bust the seams.”
“There’s nothing to you, Tiffany. I may not watch those shows, but I am an Italian male. I don’t think skeletal frames are any man’s ideal. Just a little. I promise not to force-feed you.” He smiled, setting off the crinkles around his eyes.
Tiffany could never resist Simone. He was like a big puppy dog. And since they’d been neighbors, he was more like a brother to her than her own brother had ever been. “Okay, you win. Lead the way.”
She allowed herself to be nudged next door. She’d been so many times to this apartment, a mirror image of her own, but so much more grown up. Good quality furniture, overflowing floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a fully equipped kitchen that Simone actually used on a daily basis. When Simone returned from the high school biology classes he taught, he went for a jog, then got to work in the kitchen. Heavenly aromas wafted from under his door every evening when she returned, while Tiffany wondered if she had enough lettuce left over in the fridge for a salad.
“I still haven’t gotten used to cooking for one.” He pulled a hot bakery tray from the oven.
Tiffany waited until he’d turned. “How’s Ramona? Have you spoken to her?” She knew Simone didn’t want to talk about it, while still wanting desperately to talk about it.
He turned his back to her again, placing bread slowly onto a plate. “She likes Chicago. She prefers e-mailing to calling or Skyping, says the sound of my voice makes her nostalgic. Makes her weaken her resolve about our deal.” His shoulders slouched.
Tiffany held back rather than slipping comforting arms around him.
“I hate how she calls it ‘our’ deal, when she’s the one who wanted to go to Chicago, free from all ties. I was willing to wait for her.”
Tiffany heard a sigh, but when Simone turned around he was smiling. She suspected his acting skills were far more developed than her own.
He placed the serving plate on the table with a flourish. “Crusty, homemade French bread, with melted gorgonzola and hazelnuts.”
“You’re freaking kidding me. You even bake your own bread?”
“Ah, ah, ah.” He slapped her hand playfully. “No profanity at this dinner table, Signorina Walker.”
“Oh, please.” Tiffany held up a steaming piece of baguette, smelling the melted gorgonzola. “Your English is so damned perfect and precise. You need to shake it up a bit, make it a bit more colorful.” She grinned. “That’s where I come in.”
“So you see? I lucked out with my choice of neighbor.”
“Ha!” Tiffany swallowed a bite. “Luck’s got nothing to do with it. Where else could we afford to live on two teacher’s salaries? A penthouse on Piazza di Spagna?”
Simone’s face clouded over. “Ramona’s company pays for some luxurious condo.”
He made a face and the word, on his lips, sounded vulgar.
“It overlooks Lake Michigan and the skyline. It has a gym and a twenty-four hour doorman.” He allowed his voice to grow soft. “She’s not coming back.”
Tiffany sighed and placed her hand over Simone’s. His hazel eyes looked so vulnerable. A lock of his thick, dark hair fell over his eyes, and she longed to brush it away. “No, she isn’t, Simone.”
“Yeah, I know.”
His voice sounded heartbreakingly sad. For the second time, Tiffany fought the urge to embrace him. “You need to get over her. There must be some gorgeous colleague at work. Cook her dinner and she’ll swoon.” She stroked his arm. “I can’t think of a better boyfriend than you.”
His gaze met hers. “Ramona didn’t think so. She couldn’t sprint away fast enough.”
“Ramona doesn’t know what she’s missing.”
One side of his mouth twitched up. “Then why aren’t you jumping me when you have the chance? I’m lonely and vulnerable.”
“I would, but I’m vain and shallow. I need a man in show business, with a fancy car and a yacht. Someone who’ll have the contacts to get me on TV.” She shrugged. “A high school biology teacher—no matter how sexy and adept in the kitchen he is—just won’t cut it.”

Excerpt #2 “You got your tools?” Cal asks and skirts around the side of the house.
“I couldn’t really find any at home.” I hadn’t looked. Well, I had, but what we had consisted of a small kit under the sink to do minor stuff around the house. The hammer hadn’t been much bigger than my hand.
He looks over his shoulder, still walking. “No tools? Nothing?” He faces forward again. “What’s your dad use around your place?”
I know his question is innocent. Cal couldn’t know about my dad, but the question still makes my chest burn. Anger isn’t the current fire however, because I can give Cal some leeway, but his honest assumption drudges up those feelings I like to keep locked up. “He’s not around.”
Cal stops and turns toward me, hand on his hip, the other holding his coffee. His brows are drawn together. I don’t think it’s what I’ve told him that’s stopped him, but perhaps the way I’ve said it. I feel his eyes assess me. He takes a sip of his coffee then resumes walking. “I think I can scrounge up some stuff for you to use.”
“Thanks.” Having to offer this gratitude bugs me because it feels like I owe Cal something. Then again, I kind of do; he’s taken a chance on me.
We turn another corner to the back of the house where an old porch looks worse than the front. It’s a mouth, missing teeth with the remaining ones discolored, broken or loose.
“You’re going to take this down today. Demolition.” He turns and looks at me with a grin. “I love demolition.”
“Okay.” By the looks of it, I could probably just give it a push and watch it collapse.
I took woods at school with Mr. Henry. I learned some shit about building stuff. Measuring, sawing, fitting stuff together, gluing, nailing. I mean, I didn’t try too hard. I wouldn’t have wanted to look like a try-hard or anything, but I kind of liked that class. I liked the way you could take a slab of wood and make something with it. We didn’t demolish things though, but taking shit apart seems like something I might have a talent for.
“I’ve already dealt with the electrical, so that won’t be an issue,” he says like I know what he’s talking about. He points to the skeleton of a light fixture. I nod like I have a clue. “Start on the top and work your way down so you don’t hurt yourself.”
I look up at the dilapidated roof.
“I don’t want you up there–”
I breathe a sigh of relief.
“–so, we’ll set up a ladder and a scaffold before I leave.” He turns away and heads toward his rust dappled truck. “Taking it down will be the easiest part. When you’re done, if there’s any salvageable wood, pile that up in its own pile. Be sure to use gloves—I’ve probably got an extra pair around here. I’m not sure you’ll find much usable wood on that porch. Separate the rest of what you can into trash or salvage. You know the difference?”
I don’t and force myself to ask the question. “How do you know if the wood is salvageable?”
He glances at the porch. “Most of that’s going to be in the recycling pile.” With the hand holding his coffee mug, he points at the porch. “See the dark spots? The way it looks like it’s splintering?” After I nod, he says, “That’s all rot. When wood is soft like that, weak, spongy, and broken, you can’t use it for building anymore. If you find any pieces that look–” he turns back to the truck and presses a finger to a smooth board– “closer to this. See how the grain of this is compact?” He knocks on it with a knuckle. “No give. We’re using this for your scaffold. It’s strong and sturdy. That’s what we want.”
I nod again because it’s all I know to do. I feel like an idiot and hate that I do. I wonder if Tanner would know all this stuff. Probably. I want to ask more questions but don’t. Afraid to look stupid.

Excerpt The old TV sputtered and a fuzzy image of a peculiar man appeared on the screen. His eyes widened and sparkled. “Would you like a brand new brother?” a voice-over boomed. “Call now!” Above his head, the words CALL NOW flashed in golden lettering. At the bottom of the screen, a phone number scrolled.
Maybe I should call, Nicole thought. A brand new brother sounds perfect.
“That’s it. New and improved! Call now.”
Nicole smiled, sensing a personal connection as though this commercial spoke directly to her. She cradled her phone in her hands. A fingertip flicked across the screen without her even needing to concentrate. Her phone had long ago become an appendage, as integral as a foot or a kidney.
After Nicole entered the number, her finger hovered above the dial icon. Something held her back, but she couldn’t imagine what it could be. She might have guessed self-preservation had she any means to gauge the lurking danger. Had she any inkling her impetuous nature would fix her on a chaotic course beyond her control.
She did want a new brother. As long as he wasn’t like Jay, who always said things to upset her and never did what she wanted him to do. She thrust aside her unease and tapped the icon. Instead of a ring, Nicole heard more of a choking sound, a gasp as if someone strangled.
“Hello, Nicole. Are you ready to change your life?”
The voice on her phone was identical to the voice-over in the commercial. Nicole figured this guy must own the company or something. “Maybe,” she said. The man on the TV screen stared at her while she spoke. Nicole leaned to the left and right, and the man’s face tracked her each time. She hesitated. “How much does it cost?”
“Do you mean money? Oh, no. It won’t cost you any money. Not one cent. But there is a cost.”
“What is it?”
“Nothing for you to worry about, my dear. Nothing at all. Your satisfaction is guaranteed or your money back.”
“That seems fair. Wait, I thought you said—”
“Now, now. Don’t worry about a thing. We’ll simply replace your brother with a better one. This offer doesn’t come around every day. It is, to be candid, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The man on the TV winked but not subtly. His head dipped so low that his oversized hat nearly slid off. “Decide quickly. Supplies are running out.”
The words CALL NOW lit up in a sickly yellow, casting a jaundiced glow across the face of the eccentric man with the whimsical hat and sparkling eyes.
“Then yes! What do I have to do?”
The man lifted his head. His lips gave a twitch. The voice answered, “Nothing more, nothing more. You’ve done it! Congratulations, my dear. Call the same number if your new brother malfunctions, and I’ll send an attendant straight away.” When he disconnected, the TV flicked itself off and Nicole heard her father’s voice.
“Nic, come downstairs, please. Jay has something he wishes to say.”
When Nicole arrived, she sagged with disappointment. Her brother looked the same. Same broad chest. Same confident grin. Stupid, worthless commercial. At least it didn’t cost her any money.
“I’m sorry, Nic,” Jay said. “I only wanted to use the new TV to kick you out. That was wrong of me. Please take the remote and accept my apology.”
Nicole stared open-mouthed. Jay appeared the same, his voice sounded the same, but this was not her brother. Sweet.
“Thanks,” she said.
He handed her the remote, flashed the kindest smile she had seen from him in years, and left the room. Nicole watched her videos in utter bliss. Once she was caught up, she decided to check on this new brother of hers. If he was going to be awesome, she might as well be friendlier. As she made her way upstairs, she thought about the number on her phone and doubted she would ever need to call it again.
Her brother’s door was ajar. Walking closer, she heard him chewing on something, maybe granola given all the crunching. She pushed the door open and stepped inside. Robot Jay took another bite of his phone and looked up at her. Metal and plastic bits ground together.
He chewed slowly, savoring every morsel.
“Everything all right, my wonderful sister?” When she didn’t answer, he popped the rest of the device in his mouth and licked his fingers clean.
“Sure,” Nicole said, backing out of his room. “What could possibly be wrong?”

Excerpt #3 What should have been a fifteen-minute drive took Roxy ten. Callan felt like he needed those extra five minutes to find the strength to stand since he was sure his knees were going to give out on him, but he climbed out of her car at the first listing since Roxy got out and stared at him until he did.
“I really had hoped I’d go back in time if I ever went that fast,” he mused as they walked up to the brick townhome bearing a lockbox on the front door.
She gave him the side-eye as she entered a code into the lockbox. “You drive an Audi and you’ve never opened her up?”
“Well, no.”
“Why not?”
“Because…” He sought the right words and went with, “I’m normal.”
“Sounds rather boring to me.”
“Maybe, but if my agent heard I was in a car with someone who drives like you, he’d drop dead of a heart attack.”
Her lips twitched with humor. “Well, we’re here now. Let’s focus on the listing.”
“Okay.”
She motioned towards the door handle. “While it’s a little unconventional, I believe the potential homeowner should be the one to open the front door and go inside first. That first feeling you get when you step into a new place is one of the most important things to consider when homebuying.”
He nodded and opened the door. He paid attention to his first impression as he stepped inside and paused in the foyer. Then he got distracted when Roxy followed him in and brushed against him, making him itch to touch her.
“First thoughts?” she asked.
He stuck his hands in his pockets so he didn’t give into his urge. “It’s very white.”
The two-story foyer was open and airy. To the right was a grand dining room with a crystal chandelier. To the left was what appeared to be a formal living room. Ahead was a hall leading towards what he thought was the kitchen and family room.
Every single wall was white.
“Paint is an inexpensive update,” she said. “But it tells me something that you noticed the white walls first rather than the layout or these beautiful hardwood floors. Let’s go ahead and do a walk-through anyway. It will help us narrow down what you like and don’t like in a property.”
“Works for me.”
They completed their tour of the townhouse, where he decided he liked the hardwood floors, the custom built-ins in the study and family room, the crown molding throughout the home, and the fact that it backed up to the Chattahoochee National Forest. He didn’t like the lack of character, the layout, or the outdated bathrooms.
They went through the remaining listings just like that. Much as Roxy suspected, none of them were quite what he wanted.
Strangely, although he hadn’t been planning on buying a new home until a few days ago, he found himself getting into the spirit of it. Roxy made it interesting, her death-defying driving aside. He found himself asking for her opinion more than once and taking it into account, something he wouldn’t typically do with someone he didn’t know all that well. He tried telling himself that it was because she was his real estate agent, but deep inside, he knew that wasn’t true.
Somehow, some way, this woman he had met all of seven weeks ago had come to matter to him.
A lot.
When they returned to his condo’s parking garage, she stopped her car in front of the door leading into the complex rather than parking.
“I don’t suppose you’d be interested in coming up for a drink?” he asked.
“As much as I’d like that, I can’t.”
“Ah. Busy night ahead?”
“Not really. The thing is, if I go up to your condo, we’re going to have sex. I can’t get distracted by sex right now no matter how much I might want that.”
His disappointment eased into pleasure. Apparently, he hadn’t made as bad a first impression with her as he’d feared.
Good to know.
“Guess I can’t argue with that,” he said. “How about a goodbye kiss?”
She shook her head and waved him out of the car. “Stop trying to get me to break my no-sex pact.”
He paused with his hand on the door’s handle. “What’s that now?”
“Tell you what,” she said, leaning over him, pulling the handle, and shoving the door open. “You never ask about that again and I’ll call you for some phone sex at some point this week.”
“Bye.”

Excerpt #1 Carrie paced to the end of the trailer and paused. “Oh my God, what did I do?”
She was exhausted, but she also knew she wouldn’t sleep if she tried to take that nap she needed. A quick check of the clock told her it was two-thirty in the afternoon in California and safe to call her lifeline. She picked up the phone and went to the bedroom, closing the door and praying no one would be able to hear her if they were milling around the campground outside her trailer.
She waited while the phone rang, and when it was answered, Ari’s face filled the screen again. “Wow, two calls in two days. What’s up, girl?”
“I need help,” Carrie said without introduction. “I screwed up, and now I don’t know how to fix it or what to do about it.”
“Whoa, slow down,” Ari said, leaning into the camera as if that was going to help her see Carrie better. “What happened? Bad day on the set?”
“More like a good night in the hay with Braxton Timothy,” she hissed, her eyes darting around, and her ears perked for anyone who might be outside the trailer.
“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” Ari squealed.
“Shh,” Carrie shushed. “There are other people around here. We have to be quiet.”
“You’re in your trailer, right?”
“Which isn’t soundproof.” She waved her hand in the air for a second and then dug around for her earbuds. Once she had them, she left one out so she could hear what was going on in the hangar too.
“Wow, you are paranoid,” Ari teased, an easy grin on her face. “I can’t believe you slept with Mr. Hollywood! How was it?”
“Earth-shattering,” she said honestly. “I’ve never experienced anything like that ever in my twenty-seven years.”
Ari did a fist pump and then danced in her seat like an idiot. “I’m so excited!”
“I can tell,” Carrie said dryly. “But you’re missing the point.”
“There’s a point?”
“Yes!” She was exasperated that her friend was not getting it. “I slept with him after I said I wouldn’t sleep with him.”
“And you aren’t the first, I’m sure. Tell me what happened.”
Carrie filled her friend in on the trip out on the sled, getting stranded in a cabin, and sex by the light of the fire. When she finished, Ari sat transfixed, biting her lip like she’d just watched Fifty Shades of Grey.
“I still don’t see a problem, Carrie. It was consensual and sounds like it was damn amazing.”
“It so was,” she sighed.
“And that’s the problem,” Ari deduced. “You want to do it again and he doesn’t.”
“No, he wants to do it again and I don’t. I can’t, Ari. I can’t,” she said, dragging out the word like a song.
“Why don’t you want to do it again?”
Carrie tossed up her hand in frustration. “I do want to do it again, but I can’t do it again because then I won’t be able to stop, and you know how that’s going to end up.”
Ari tossed her head back and forth a couple of times. “First comes sex, then comes love, then comes a baby in a baby carriage!” she sang, laughing at her wittiness, but Carrie remained unamused.

“That is incredibly arrogant of you,” she said.
“Or honest. It’s obvious there’s only room in this town for one lingerie shop. I’d rather it was mine.”
“If you think I’m going to let you run me out of town then you’re deluded. This is my home. You’re the foreigner here.”
He rocked back on his heels as he thrust his hands into the pockets of his jeans. Although there was nothing in his manner to give him away, she got the distinct impression he was enjoying himself.
“Ah, that old chestnut. We hate the English. The English are the root of all our problems. Blah, blah. You guys need to get over yourselves. You lost. We won. We own you now. There’s no point being bitter.”
Kirsty reeled before blustering nonsense.
“That’s right. The English are here to stay.”
“That’s it,” she said at last. “You’ve crossed the line.” She turned to Rainne with a tight smile. “I’m sorry, honey, but I can’t help you now. You’re stuck with him.” She hooked her thumb towards the brother. “You have no idea how much I feel for you.”
“I get that a lot,” Rainne mumbled.
“As for you,” she told the English imbecile, “bring it on. You don’t stand a chance.”
“So, last shop standing?”
“It’ll be mine.”
“I like a healthy imagination in a woman.”
“You’re going to regret annoying me this much.”
At last, he grinned. Kirsty felt her world shift as something unseen pulled her towards him.
“It’s on, then?” he said with delight.
“It’s on.” She stepped back, feeling slightly disorientated.
“Great.” He nodded. “War. This I do know.”

I didn’t register that the voice was speaking to me. The only reason I even looked up was because it was the first American accent I had heard all night and it sent a comforting shiver through my entire body. When I saw its owner leaning against the bar beside me, that turned to a chill.
Let me admit here and now that powerful people scare me. I’m not afraid of them, per se, but I am afraid of what they are capable of. They don’t make me fear for my safety; they make me fear for my entire world. It frightens me how anyone can become so consumed by themselves that they lose sight of everything but their own ambition. Power isn’t quiet. The power I fear clings to the fabric of their clothing and oozes from the place in which they stand. It’s palpable, touchable, electrical, and I despise it.
So, when I first laid eyes on Azrael Falkov, it was like being christened in ice water.
I guessed he was around thirty, and if I was six-one in these shoes, he was at least six-four, with the build one required to pull off that height. He was dressed in black from head to toe, from his pointed dress shoes to his bowtie. He beat me hands down in the tan department, and his face had the angular elegance of an old photograph—you know the kind, those portraits of your grandparents’ youth that you look at and wonder why you didn’t inherit that perfect skin, those sharp features. His dark hair was styled back off his face and eyes a startling shade of amber were fixed steadily on me.
He was the kind of man I would not take home in a million years. Because never in a million years would he carefully drive my Viper GTS downtown to buy coffee and crawl back to me in reverence.
He was the kind of man who would burn out my clutch and kill me to keep my car for himself.

“It went about as well as expected,” she said, even as memories swamped her.
Lily felt her stomach knot, even after all these years.
“Anyway,” she said brightly, “we did what we set out to do.”
“Was there any doubt?” Mikki said, clinking his beer bottle against her glass. “You, my dear, are an absolute beast, and I think there’s nothing you can’t get if you set your mind to it.”
She smiled back at him. Being a YouTuber might seem frivolous, but she knew better than anyone it was a business, one that took hard work and dedication, one you had to take seriously.
No one took success more seriously than she did.
