At first, she’s nothing more than a jumble of red linen shirt and a huge cream hat with red roses stumbling toward me.

When I manage to steady her and she looks up into my eyes, it’s my whole world that tilts.

I wish I could stop my heart from beating too fast and my skin from feeling hot.

After a pause, I let my hands slowly fall down and step back. Not far, but enough that I can breathe again.

And like a kaleidoscope coming into focus, I’m struck with that sense of déjà vu, of recognition. Of familiarness.

Have I met her before?

No. I would remember that innocent looking face, the hint of vulnerability in her cinnamon eyes, and that sexy, decadent pink rosebud mouth.

With a great view of the amazing Sicilian coast, the sunset we are treated to has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. If only Fleur wasn’t sitting in front of me.

We enjoyed a nice late lunch of Mediterranean dishes: for starters, fresh spiciness of the tomato bruschetta, then as main dish, a delicious pasta with lobster and clams, paired nicely with one of my best flavorful white wines.

We have been sitting on the patio for more than three hours now and despite the lightness of the conversation and the amount of wine I have imbibed, the strange feeling persists.

Mario introduced me to his friends, who are very easy going and talkative and soon we are all toasting to love with the best spumanti our wineries ever produced.

And soon all glasses are empty and Mario is opening a white wine. “You must taste this. Magma winery produces the best Sicilian wines.”  

Mario is not only one of our winery’s best clients since he owns hotels and restaurants here in Sicily and in Calabria, he and Salvatore have been friends since the cradle. When Amalia left me and I fell into a dark depression, Salvatore dragged me here for a whole weekend.

I am still not sure if I was cured from my depression by the amount of wine Mario and Salvatore made me drink or by the amount of beautiful, pink pussies I was introduced to. Because if I am true to myself, I don’t remember a single face of the women I fucked that weekend.

It was then that Salvatore and I learned our passion for sharing women.

“I like this…it’s crispy, not as sweet as the others,” Fleur comments after sipping her wine. She raises her glass against the light and then takes another sip. And to my surprise, she breathes it, as if a connoisseur. “And, Dieu, it’s so…scented.”

“This is an excellent wine,” Jean remarks after tasting his and reaches for the wine bottle. His eyebrows rise as he reads the back label. “It’s produced locally.”

“Don’t be so surprised, mio amico,” Mario says, winking at me and then serving Collette, who accepts her glass with a charming smile. “It’s not only the French who know how to produce a good wine, Jean.”

Si, our family has been revolutionizing wine production here in Sicily.” I am not boasting, just stating the truth and I am very proud of everything we have worked so hard to achieve. “This white is made with Albanello, a nearly extinct grape found around Vittoria, and Zibibbo. I blend them together and soak the wine in its skins for 10 days.”

“Delicious,” Fleur says and smiles on cue, but I can see she is worried about something by the small crease between her eyebrows and she’s not paying attention to the conversation. Soon I am engaged in a chat with Jean, whose father-in-law is a well-known Bordeaux winery owner, but my mind is whirling on what I am going to do with her tonight.

Si, because make no mistake, she will be mine.

Mio amico Enzo here is an excellent chef apart from being the best winemaker in Sicily, possibly in all of Italy,” he says, exaggerating as always, but for once I don’t bother correcting him. “Now, signorine, all you have to do is convince him to stay with us tonight.”

“If his cooking is half as good as his wine, I would very much look forward to it,” Fleur says.

“Okay, okay,” I raise my palms in surrender, smiling. “I’m convinced.” Not that I needed much convincing.
