IT STARTED WITH A LIST (Pacific Grove University Series #1) by Tinia Montford
With her college graduation looming, Vassa reflects on the past four years. After a devastating betrayal from her closest friend leaves her ostracized, she trusts no one. Now she is mega disappointed. No wacky misadventures, no drunken nights, and no regrettable mistakes that you can NEVER tell your parents. Work and class, class and work. That’s it. College is supposed to be the best years of your life… Right?
Vassa feels as though she’s cheated herself out of a full college experience. Notable with romance and boys and stuff. So, she makes a college bucket list. Then the worse thing ever happens. Her list falls into the hands of Lazarus Gilbert. King of the baseball team, sworn enemy (in her opinion), and her annoying upstairs neighbor. He thinks he’s found something fun to do. She thinks she’s in trouble. That’s until she discovers there’s more to Lazarus than he lets on…
With the pressures of post-college decisions and failing classes, can they complete the bucket list before the semester runs out? Are Vassa and Lazarus just too different to get along? Will they both come out winners in the end, or will she retreat to her safety-zone? Is it too late for her to learn to live and let live, and let love enter her heart?

Synopsis Lush. Dark. Romantic. Introducing a newly reimagined tale written in the vein of Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone.
Long before civilization, there were the gods. And before the gods, there was the earth, the celestial bodies, and air given flesh. They are the Anemoi—the Four Winds—and they have been banished to the four corners of the world.
Wren of Edgewood is no stranger to suffering. Her parents are gone. Survival is all she knows. For three hundred years, the land known as the Gray has been encased in ice, surrounded by a great barrier called the Shade, which protects the townsfolk from the Deadlands beyond.
But day by day, the Shade weakens.
Only one thing can stop the Shade’s fall: a mortal woman taken captive across the barrier, bound in wedlock to the dark god who reigns over the Deadlands. He is the North Wind, the Frost King, an immortal whose heart is said to be as frigid as the land he rules.
And the time has come for the Frost King to choose his bride.
The North Wind is a standalone, enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance, the first in a series sprinkled with Greek lore. Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Laura Thalassa, and Scarlett St. Clair.

Playlist While drafting, I mostly listen to epic music or movie soundtracks. It’s very difficult for me to write to a song with lyrics, and instrumental music helps me get into whatever “mood” the book is that I’m working on. As this is a dark fairytale retelling, I searched for pieces that felt a bit eerie, or romantic. Here are some of the pieces I listened to when writing/editing The North Wind.
Für Alina by Arvo Pärt
Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt
Turning Page by Sleeping at Last (instrumental version)
You Complete Me by A.R. Rahman
Experience by Ludovico Einaudi

Synopsis Meeting long-lost siblings should be awesome, right?
Well, when you happen to be on the wrong side of the law and have every intention of staying there, having a cop for a sister isn’t exactly ideal. And teaming up with said sister? Well, that is just the cherry on top of the craptastic pie that has been my life.
But when our brother decides to attack us head on, banding together is the least of our problems.
Because in our family? Being the hunter also means being the hunted.

Excerpt #2 I felt the swish of wings a moment before my father spoke, his appearance making both Bastian and Emrys jump nearly out of their skins.
“You called?” Azrael asked from the doorway.
I tossed an irritated glare over my shoulder. “Yeah, I did. Lots. Good of you to show up.”
Bastian found my hand and squeezed my fingers, likely trying to get me to shut up. But he didn’t realize just how many times I had pleaded for Azrael for help in my head. Hundreds maybe thousands of times over the last two days and he’d stayed gone. When our brother showed up, when that stupid note was in the grass, when Darby was breaking her living room apart. I had begged and pleaded with him to come and help us—help her—and still he’d stayed away.
“Sorry,” he said, tilting his dark head to the side as he assessed Bastian. “I was working.”
He and I both knew could do his job from anywhere. In fact, he had done this job from a squat prison underneath thousands of pounds of rock and rubble and water where he’d stayed for nearly twenty years. And now when we needed him that’s when he decided he needed to be on site to collect souls?

PIECES OF EIGHT (Lost Souls’ Treasure Series #1) by Tricia Leedom
Synopsis
From the author who whisked you away on a wild escapade in The Key West Escape Series comes a sexy, adventure-packed spin off. Follow Mitch Thompson and his team of misfits as they find danger, intrigue, and romance on the hunt for the legendary Lost Souls’ Treasure…
Former special ops aviator Griffin Dodge hasn’t been the same since he disobeyed a direct order and totaled a Blackhawk helicopter. After being separated from the military, he recovered from his injuries and took a job on a marine salvage crew based out of Key West. The only person he let himself get close to on the boat was a woman called “Bug” Martin, a waifish tomboy with a mean streak. They couldn’t have been more different – a former all-star golden boy from the mid-west and a French circus performer turned salvage diver – but they became best friends up until the day Griff’s high school sweetheart decided she wanted him back.
A year later, Bug still resents Griff for running off to Missouri and ghosting her and the crew. When her boss calls Griff into town for a favor, Bug wants to hit something. She settles on sucker-punching the selfish a-hole himself when he walks through the door. It doesn’t matter that he’s single again or that he’s sorry, she hates that she’s stuck flying shotgun to Martinique beside the guy who used to claim “quitting wasn’t in his vocabulary” before he abandoned their friendship and betrayed her trust.
The trip was supposed to take two days tops. Just enough time to retrieve the missing pages of a diary that could help lead the crew to The Lost Souls’ Treasure, but nothing is ever easy in Bug’s world. When the deal with the artifact collector goes south, Bug and Griff are forced to flee up the side of a volcano where the lava isn’t the only thing about to bubble over. The tension between them erupts into an unexpected night of passion that leaves them both questioning what comes next.
Griff starts to wonder if settling down in the suburbs still fits the man he’s become, while Bug isn’t sure if she’s willing to open her guarded-heart to the only man who’s ever broke it.
When a rival treasure hunter hellbent on finding the treasure first nabs Bug and another crew member, Griff realizes the future won’t matter, if he can’t bring his best friend home alive.

Playlist Piece of Eight (The Lost Souls’ Treasure Series Book One) is the first book my new contemporary romantic adventure series. I like to describe my books as sexy, funny, romantic action/adventure movies in print form, so I had a lot of fun creating a soundtrack for my novel.
1. Castaway by The Zac Brown Band – This song sets the tone of this book and the series. The opening lyrics capture what I want my readers to experience when they read one of my books… You’re “gonna have some fun tonight.” If you “wanna be a castaway and leave the world behind. Take a tropic holiday, say goodbye to keeping time…” then escape inside one of my adventures.
2. Waste of Lime by Ingrid Andreas – At its core, Pieces of Eight is a story about unrequited love. Griff and Bug (yes, that’s the heroine’s name) worked together on a marine salvage team out of Key West and were best friends up until the day Griff bailed on Bug to get back together with his ex. Bug, who had a secret crush on him, was heartbroken and angry. A year later, Griff returns, single again, but Bug still hasn’t forgiven him.
3. Desperado by Eagles – Griff’s theme song. Deep down, the sexy ex-Navy SEAL is lost and living with a lot of regrets.
4. Creep by Kina Grannis – Bug’s theme song. The former Circus performer turned salvage diver is a little different. She’s definitely not your typical heroine, but that makes her such an interesting character in my opinion.
5. Complicated by Carolyn Dawn Johnson – She hates him. She loves him. He still loves someone else. It’s complicated.
6. Kokomo by The Beach Boys – Tropical music interlude as our hero and heroine hop a flight to the Caribbean.
7. I Want You to Want Me by Letters to Cleo – What would you do if the man you were madly in love with—who also happened to be your best friend—came back into your life for just a few days? Would you take a shot and risk your friendship, or say nothing and pine for him after he was gone?
8. Somewhere on a Beach by Dierks Bentley – What if he kissed you and things went further than you ever expected?
9. Falling in Love (with my Best Friend) by Matt White – What if he started to have feelings for you?
10. Life is Better with You by Michael Franti & Spearhead – What if, just when he admitted how much he needed you, his ex called? (No spoilers from here on out.)
11. “The Man”- by Taylor Swift – I included this song because it’s an important secondary character’s cell phone ringtone. The song says a lot about this career-driven character who will make another appearance later in the series.
12. Shake Senora (feat. T-Pain and Sean Paul) by Pitbull, T-Pain, Sean Paul – Every adventure has a big, climatic action sequence. Insert this fun song here, and play it loud so you can hear it over the explosions.
13. If It Kills Me by Jason Mraz – *sigh*
14. You Are My Home by Man of Leisure – Double *sigh*
15. Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat – Roll the end credits. 😉
You can listen to the playlist I created for Piece of Eight here on Spotify.

Excerpt #2 “Way to be vague, Atropos,” Marcus growled. “What kind of Fate are you? Yeah, let’s just let a whole fucking realm tank and not say anything.”
Then it was Atropos standing in anger, her red hair flying about her head in a halo of rage. I wondered if we should all start standing when we had a grand statement to make. “I do what I can. You know the laws I am bound to. You know, Marcus. So, don’t sit there and tell me I’m doing a shitty job. I’m doing what I freaking can, okay? I’m here, aren’t I?”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake. Settle down. I’ll just talk to him, okay? I’ve done it a couple of times already. I’ll talk to the guy and see if we can get him out of whatever pocket dimension he made for himself, and we’re good, right? Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy and shit.” Yep, I was slurring the shit out of my words, but I had a feeling my message was clear enough. “Then you can give me back my husband, the world won’t end, and things can calm the fuck down.”
I took a little sip of what was left in my cup, and gently set it down on the coffee table. Okay, so I had to close one eye and aim extra careful, but I at least attempted to set it down gently.
Then I snuggled into the blanket and closed my eyes, calling on the element that was as elusive and ephemeral as smoke. Spirit wasn’t like the other elements. Those I could feel all the time here. They were like breathing or my heart beating—they seemed to flow into me without thought. Spirit only wanted to touch me when I was at my lowest, when I didn’t have enough strength to go on.
Kinda like right now. I felt the pull at my chest, the heat of all the elements filling me, healing me… stealing my damn buzz, but whatever. Then it felt like I was falling for a second, a sensation I hadn’t yet felt while contacting Dušan.
I opened my eyes, but he wasn’t there. The forest that was blurry at the edges, the night sky that was too close and too far away at the same time, the wooden stump he sat on—those were all there.
But he wasn’t.
Frantic, I called out, “Dušan! Come out. I need you!”
My eyes swept the tree line for the giant of a man with purple hair and lightning in his eyes.
But no one came.
Pulling out of the little pocket world took far too much effort, and by the time I made it back to my body, I could tell something was wrong.
Teresa and Andras were holding onto me, forcing my arms to my sides as I thrashed. Also, I was on the floor—that was another clue that something was amiss.

Excerpt #2 The sun was dipping low behind the clouds on my journey back home. I knew Mother would need me back at the shop—she fussed if I took too long at the market, claiming the streets were a dangerous place for young girls. Thankfully, I knew of a shortcut nearby that I took occasionally. It was a little dark down the pathway, cloaked in shadows from the buildings surrounding, but that didn’t scare me.
I should have known better, but I had never run into trouble, so I continued on without hesitation.
Something hit my foot and I flew forward, crashing into the stone floor. My coin purse flew from my hands, landing in front of me. My hands stung with dull pain as I caught myself on the cobblestone.
“Well, well, what have we here?” a sneer echoed above me, and I realized I had been tripped.
This was a trap.
I was quick to roll over and face my attackers. They surrounded me, three older men with faces filled with greed.
“What’s in the bag, pretty girl?” one of the grubby men asked, drawing a knife from the waistband of his pants.. My breath caught in my throat and I edged my hand backwards, wrapping my fingers tightly around my coin purse. If I lost it and disappointed my mother again, she would kill me. I could suddenly understand Julian’s frustration yesterday at the prospect of losing any coin, and my chest constricted.
My mother cared more about me being better, doing better, than my actual wellbeing. Losing coin would be such as disgrace and burden her for months.
“Cat got your tongue?” another asked slyly, a hint of amusement evident in his voice. I narrowed my eyes.
And then I felt it—a familiar rush: a pulse of energy, flooding through my veins to my fingertips. I knew suddenly that I was going to be just fine.
“Leave me be,” I said simply.
They didn’t know yet, but I had the advantage. The men ignored me, seeing me only as foolish prey. But they were foolish, to bet their lives against a stranger and harass an innocent, hard working girl. They were fools to assume that I was unarmed.
“Does the coin you carry have more value than your life, girl?” another man threatened.
“I said, leave me be you thieving scum,” I snapped. Their eyes darkened and their fists clenched. I got to my feet, standing my ground. They closed in, ready to strike as one lifted a knife.
I smirked at their ignorance.
Lifting my own hand, I created a scorching orange flame with nothing more than the oxygen in the air. They watched me, jaws dropping, as I hurtled a fireball at them. It caught one of them square in the chest, lighting up his shirt. He shrieked, ripping the shirt off to stamp the fire out. It sizzled into a charred mess on the ground, but the burns it inflicted were still visible, red and swollen on his skin.
The other two watched in confusion and fear, frozen and unable to process what they were witnessing. The man continued to wail in pain, but his screams seemed to fall on deaf ears.
For good measure, I let another flame lick its way across the other two men, inflicting burns along their forearms as they leapt to shield themselves helplessly. They all screamed as my fire left angry red welts along their skin.
We were currently alone in the little alleyway, but we wouldn’t be for long if they kept up their shouting.
“Quiet!” I snarled, grabbing the first man’s arm and bringing his face inches from mine. He stopped yelling, his eyes widening in fear. The injured man now trembled in fear, half naked and as helpless as he assumed me to be only moments ago.
“You three will leave me. You will not breathe a word of this to anyone, or I will personally hunt you down and remove your tongues so you cannot speak ever again. Understand?”
All three men nodded, and I gestured for them to move along. As they scurried away, I exhaled deeply, slumping against the wall. I scanned the streets on either side of me, making sure no one else had seen what had just happened. I didn’t spot anyone, and decided I was safe again. Straightening my clothes, I briskly exited the alleyway.
I could not risk anyone finding out about me—about what I could do.
I did not like to use my powers unless it was absolutely necessary. I didn’t understand why I had them, and if my mother found out she would certainly panic—and with good reason. Only royals should have magical powers, so why a normal human from a lowly village would possess any is
beyond me. If anybody found out—if the royals found out—I don’t know what would happen to me.
I imagined it could not be anything good.

Excerpt #2 Hanging on the wall above the table is Shadow’s rendition of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
He’s a man of God, I tell myself. He’s not going to hurt me.
The sound of his footsteps approaching echoes in my ears. I close my eyes and imagine the painting, both Shadow’s version and my memory of the original. I remember the original. Didn’t I travel somewhere to see it? Who was I with?
“Are you okay?”
My memory of the painting evaporates as I open my eyes. “What’s your real name?” I ask, relieved to see he’s not carrying a gun or any other weapon.
He looks taken aback by this question. And he very clearly chooses to ignore it for a moment as he places some gauze, iodine, and duct tape on the table. Taking a seat in the chair next to me, he nods toward my foot.
“Do you mind?” he asks softly. “It will be easier if you rest your foot on my knee?”
I hesitate for a brief moment, then I slowly raise my foot high enough for him to grasp it firmly. He doesn’t seem to mind getting his hands or jeans bloody. I wince as he places my heel on his knee.
“Sorry,” he says, lifting my foot. “I forgot it’s on the back of your heel.”
He rests the ball of my foot on his knee and begins using the gauze and iodine to clean the dirt-encrusted wound.
“You didn’t answer my question,” I remind him.
He doesn’t look up as he reaches for more squares of gauze. “Name’s Walker.”
“Walker?” I say it aloud, and the sound of the name on my lips makes my chest ache.
“What’s your name?” he asks, glancing at me as I clutch my chest. “I know it ain’t Shine.”
“Cassidy,” I reply, squinting my eyes at a hazy memory. A piece of paper. A legal document.
“That’s a beautiful name,” he says, and the memory slips away, just out of my grasp.
Then, as suddenly as it left, it’s back. I’m signing the document. It’s a legal document. I’m signing it, and I’m laughing.
“Beautiful name for a beautiful woman,” Walker says, refocusing my attention on the present moment.
“Did you just call me beautiful?”
A tiny smile plays on his lips. “Yes, ma’am. Is that okay by you?”
I can’t help but smile as I realize how crazy I was to think this sweet, innocent man meant to harm me. “It’s okay with me,” I reply.
I’ll still have to keep my guard up, but he’s done nothing other than show me the kindness and purity of his heart. I think Walker would sooner cut off his own hand than hurt me. And I don’t know why I’m so sure of this. But I feel it as surely as I know I’ve seen the original painting of The Last Supper.
“You’re going to use that duct tape on my foot?” I ask playfully, trying not to laugh as I suddenly feel ticklish from the sensation of his calloused fingers on my skin.
He places the soiled gauze pads on the table and stares at the roll of tape. “That’s probably not the way you do things in the city, huh?”
“I didn’t mean to say you’re doing anything wrong,” I clarify, feeling guilty for making him feel like I was criticizing him. “That wasn’t meant as a criticism. It was… Actually, I was trying… I was trying to flirt with you. And now I feel like a total idiot.”
“Flirt?” he says, looking genuinely perplexed. “What’s that?”
I grin as I’m once again surprised by his innocence. “Oh, boy, am I going to have fun teaching you. Not that I’m any good at it. Clearly. But—” I stop myself and take a breath before I start rambling nervously. “Flirting is something you do,” I begin, my eyes scanning his face, studying his grease-smudged, sharp cheekbones and those sparkling blue eyes, “with someone you find interesting…or attractive.”
His dark eyebrows scrunch together as he considers this new information. “Do I have this right? You find me attractive?”
My face feels as if it’s about to burst into flames. “Yes, I find you…ridiculously attractive.”
He still looks confused, but a smile begins to form in the center of that manly beard.
“Well, then, maybe you oughta teach me how to flirt,” he says, glancing in the direction of my eyes, but only for a brief second.
I recollect the moment he called me beautiful a couple minutes ago, replaying the memory over and over again because I know he doesn’t have the courage to repeat it. I hope my brain isn’t so messed up that I’ll forget his words by tomorrow.

Synopsis
Heaven
I was fourteen the first time I laid eyes on the smoking hot, silver-eyed, goalie. Damon Wolfe was the most gorgeous boy I’d ever seen. All it took was one glance, one sentence and my heart was his. But I was too young and he was too broken.
Seven years later, he’s the biggest off the ice player in the NHL and I’m his virginal best friend.
Of course, I have the perfect solution to that particular problem, but Damon keeps on refusing to be the one to vanquish my chastity. He claims he doesn’t want to ruin our friendship, that he’s not good enough for me. Yet, somehow his eyes say something different whenever he looks at me.
Just one night, that’s all I’m asking. What’s the worst that can happen?
Wolfe
I was mesmerized by Heaven Andersen the first time I looked into her sparkling turquoise eyes. She was a teenage kid with a mouth full of braces and bruised knees, but she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen—like a fairy-tale princess. With one look, she sent all my inner demons running. But she was just a kid and I was too damaged.
Seven years later, she’s my best friend. My best friend with a single-minded mission—to get laid. She wants me to take her virginity and teach her about sex. But she’s an off-limits, flawless diamond girl, and so far out of the realm of anything my blackened heart is looking for or deserves it’s laughable.
So, how come I’m not laughing? How come my best friend is the first thing I think about in the morning and last thing I think about at night? More importantly, what am I going to do to protect her—from me?

Excerpt #3 I slam the door and am surprised to see Brooks when I turn around. I guess the rain kept him from working today. I try to make a quick break for my room, but my name on his lips stops me.
“Raelynn, please.”
I don’t know if the pleading in his voice triggers a flashback of Logan, him pleading whenever I caught him cheating, or if I have so much pent up anger over the last few days, I am ready to let it out. “What?” I practically hiss.
He sighs heavily. “I am sorry about the other night.”
I snort. “Sorry? For what kissing me? Or sorry that I woke up hearing you have sex?”
He takes a step closer to me as I take a step back. “I am sorry that I was an asshole and invited that girl over after I kissed you.”
I laugh loudly. “Yeah, I am sure you are really sorry about that.”
“I am. I was stupid. I was acting out. I was pissed you rejected me.”
I have nothing to say to him, so I turn to leave the room. He grabs my arm to stop me. “What do you want me to say?”
I look down at his grip on my forearm and glance back up at him, anger piercing my eyes. “Don’t fucking touch me.”
He looks down at his hand on my arm and something must click in his mind because he practically jumps away from me. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I just don’t know how to get across to you.”
“Let me fill you in on a small detail, Brooks. Fucking some bitch isn’t the best way to get across to me.” I walk closer to him and push his chest. “Telling me you are sorry when I can see in your eyes that you truly aren’t is not a way to get across to me. Grabbing my arm to talk to me is not a way to get across to me.”
I push him again, my body raging. I feel my heartbeat speeding up as my inhibitions drop.
“I am sorry, Blue. Really. I am an idiot. I don’t take rejection well.” He doesn’t fight back against my pushing which pisses me off even more.
“Don’t fucking call me Blue,” I say as I push him closer to the wall. I can feel his heartbeat speeding up under my palms. I can see the way his eyes keep glancing to my lips the angrier I get. My own storm brewing inside of me.
“I didn’t fuck her.”
I roll my eyes. “Really so the ‘harder baby’ and the banging wasn’t fucking?”
“Not in the biblical sense. I couldn’t stop thinking about you, so I kicked her out.”
I push him again. “That’s the biggest load of horseshit.”
“It’s true.”
I contemplate what he’s saying. Honesty in his eyes. I am surprised to find myself believing him.
I go to push him again, but he grabs my wrists as they lay on his chest. “Don’t look at me like that,” he says.
“Like what?” I ask as I too can’t help but glance at his lips.
“Like you want to fucking kiss me.”
“I don’t want to kiss you.” I push against his chest again until he backs into the living room wall.
“Your body sure seems like it.”
“Fuck you,” I spit. His eyes pierce into me just as I grab his neck and pull his lips to mine.

Welcome to the blog tour for UMBRA, the second prequel in the young adult fantasy/dystopian series, Dimension Drift Worlds, by Christina Bauer. See below for information on the book and series, buy links, the book’s playlist, and details on her giveaway.
UMBRA (Dimension Drift Prequels #2) by Christina Bauer
Synopsis “I have not found an author that I adore the writing style of this much since Jennifer L. Armentrout. The world that this author created was amazing.”– Brittany’s Book Reviews
A prequel novella to the new series from USA Today’s ‘must read YA paranormal romance’ author, Christina Bauer.
One day, eighteen-year-old Thorne will be the Emperor of the Omniverse, the single being who rules countless worlds. Trouble is, his father Cole–who’s also the current Emperor–is a sadistic freak.
In fact, Cole won’t even keep his promises to the very humans who got him his throne.
Thorne won’t stand for it. He decides to travel to the human world and make good on his father’s promises. What he doesn’t count on is falling in love….
.

As part of the launch tour for my new book, UMBRA, the lovely folks at Adventures in Writing asked me to share the tunes that inspired me while writing this particular novella.
So without further ado, here are my top five songs!
“Let me put you in the picture, let me show you what I mean. The messiah is my sister, ain’t no king man, she’s my queen.”
In UMBRA, we have an intergalactic prince, Thorne, who thinks he will never be fortunate enough to find his transcendent (the girl he loves through so many parallel realties, their bond bleeds into his current universe.) This song captures the feeling he has when our guy meets a certain Meimi Archer.
“Hello, hello … let me tell you what it’s like to be a zero.”
Almost every time I write a book, I end up obsessing on a fresh Imagine Dragons song. This time, it was Zero. Thorne is the kind of guy who’s very open about his limitations … yet he never gives up. This song really captures that spirit for me.
“Look around, leaves are brown, and the sky is a hazy shade of winter.”
Much of UMBRA takes place in a future version of Boston, MA that is a hot dystopian mess. This song really captures that spirit. Plus, it’s a classic 1980’s chick rock song, so YEAH.
So there you have it—my top five tunes while writing UMBRA! I hope you enjoyed this list and I hope to return on a future book launch!

Excerpt This is the third time I’ve unsuccessfully tried to get the fingerprint scanner to read my thumbprint. It’s hard trying to keep my finger steady when there are eight vodka tonics in my bloodstream and five slender fingers curled around my cock.
“Hurry up,” she slurs, tightening her grip. “I want your huge cock inside me.”
My fingers slide clumsily over the scanner again, and I silently curse myself for telling my bodyguards to wait downstairs. “Just turn around and I’ll fuck you right here.”
She giggles as she turns around and lifts the back of her sheer white mini-dress, which is soaked through from the wet bikini she’s wearing underneath. “Be my guest,” she says, looking back at me with a lazy grin.
Her ass is round and smooth, with an odd sparkle to it, like she used some kind of tanning creme with shimmer in it. Turning away from the front door of my penthouse to face her, I lose my balance and nearly tip over as I reach out to smack it. She howls with laughter as she places her hand on the wall so she doesn’t fall over.
“I’ll fuck that ass six ways from Sunday,” I say, grabbing her hips to steady myself.
I slide my hand into the back of her bikini bottoms and smile as I drag my finger forward through her moisture.
“Damn, baby. You’re wetter than a fucking tsunami.”
“Fuck me, Cash,” she begs, her voice sounding more whiny than sexy.
Not that I care. The girl has an ass like Scarlett Johansson and a face like Natalie Portman. This is the first time I’ve seen her at one of my best buddy Dean’s pool parties. This means she’s either a newbie on the scene or a Vegas tourist. Either way, she’s expendable. I don’t even remember her name. I can fuck her tonight and I won’t have to worry about ever seeing her again.
She continues to giggle as I slide my finger out of her slick pussy, then she lets out a loud hiccup. “Oops!”
I chuckle as I push her wet bikini bottoms down to reveal her creamy cheeks. “Fasten your seatbelt, because I’m about to ride you like a fucking roller coaster.”
“Just…fuck me already.” She’s slurring again.
I blink my eyes a few times when her two ass cheeks turns into four. Then I reach into my back pocket. Fuck. Where are my condoms? I turn away from her and stare at the shiny steel elevator doors. Should I go down and ask one of my bodyguards for a condom? Or should I just ask them to come up and let me into my apartment, where I have a whole fucking drawer full of them?
I shake my head. Nah, I’ll just try to open the door again. I’ll get it right this time.
When I turn around again, the hottie with the ass is on her knees. She dry heaves a couple of times into the corner of the vestibule. Then she spews milky white vomit all over the dark-gray carpet. The girl’s heaving body disappears as my mind is whisked away to a dark California beach.
* * *
The waves crash like thunder behind me. The moonlight casts a ghostly silver sheen over the water and the coarse sand. The sharp, briny smell of seaweed stings my nostrils as I press the heels of my palms into her chest, but she doesn’t respond. Doesn’t open her eyes. Doesn’t breathe.
Pinching her nose, I slide my other hand under her neck and lift up gently to tilt her head back. Her brown hair fans out over the sand as I blow into her mouth. I can taste the cloying rum on her lips as I blast four more puffs of air into her mouth, and the beach begins to spin underneath me. I hold my hands out in front of me, as if this will stop the spinning. Then, I realize I have to keep trying to save her.
No! I should call 911.
I hastily pull my phone out of my pocket and dial the number, then I close my eyes so I don’t throw up.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“My girlfriend is ODing. I think she’s dying! You need to hurry! We’re at… Oh, shit! Where are we?”
“Sir, what’s your name and what’s your girlfriend’s name? And what did she take?”
“Cash. Cash Westbrook. My girlfriend is Vanessa Allen. The actress. She—Oh, God. She took suboxone. I think she only took one.”
I turn around to see if there are any signs sticking out of the sand or near the parking lot, something to tell me the name of the beach we’re on. But the sudden movement makes the Earth tilt and I fall over onto the sand.
“What dosage did she take, sir?”
“Fuck, I don’t know!”
“Sir, I need you to calm down and tell me where you are.”
“Oh, fuck,” I whisper, my heart racing as I stumble to my feet, my sneakers sinking into the sand as I try to get a better look toward the road. “I’m near Newport—wait! Corona del Mar! I remember now. We’re in Corona del Mar. Near the south end. Hurry. Please hurry.”
“Sir, help is on the way. Are you also intoxicated?”
“Yes,” I reply, and I can’t fight back the tears anymore. “I took 120 milligrams of oxy…and a few beers.”
“Sir, can you tell me if Vanessa is breathing?”
I fall to my knees, brushing her hair out of her face as I look into her wide, glossy brown eyes. “Her pupils are gone. Oh, fuck. Is she dead?”
“Cash, are her lips blue or are they a normal color?”
“They’re blue. Please hurry!”
* * *
The memory disintegrates into chaos. Hector—my six-foot-three-inch, 290-pound bodyguard—has my arms locked behind my back as I struggle to break free.
“Get off me!” I roar. “What is he doing to her?”
My other bodyguard, Dex, is hunched over the girl lying at my front door. The girl I was about to fuck.
“Cash, calm the fuck down!” Hector slams me chest-first against the wall.
The force momentarily knocks the breath from my lungs, but my body is coursing with adrenaline now. I’m not ready to give up. I can’t give up. Not this time.
I throw my head back and a sharp pain slices through the back of my head. The distinct crunch of my skull meeting Hector’s nose spurs me on.
“You motherfucker!” he roars, letting me go and spewing nasally curse words as he reaches for his broken, bloody nose.
As soon as he releases his hold on me, I rush Dex, sending him headfirst into the front door handle. He topples over and the smudge of blood on the stainless steel snaps me out of my rage. What the fuck am I doing?
Hector snaps his arms around my chest and wrenches me backward and slams me onto the ground, securing my hands behind my back just as the elevator doors slide open. A team of two paramedics and two policemen enter the vestibule with a gurney. The medics head straight for the girl.
A policeman with a gut that hangs three inches below his belt buckle approaches Hector and me with his hand on his holster. “What’s going on here?”
“She passed out,” Hector replies, his voice nasally and still taut with tension as he continues to fight to restrain me. “We were trying to wake her up.”
“Wha—?” The sound of her voice, weak and disoriented, is like fucking music to my ears, and my limbs go completely limp.
“Why are you restraining him and why is that other guy passed out cold over there?” the officer asks.
Hector can feel I’ve given up, and he quickly lets go of my arms. Getting to his feet, he holds a hand out to help me up, but I don’t take it. I stand on my own, fairly sober now.
“Can you tell me your name?” one of the medics asks the girl.
“Rosie,” she mumbles, and I sigh with relief now that I know her name and she’s awake. “I’m gonna throw up,” she continues as she turns her head and spews all over the other medic’s pant leg.
“You’re awake,” I say as they wheel her past me on the gurney.
She flashes me a loose grin. “I’m not done with you,” she slurs.
I try not to laugh as she makes the universal signal for a blowjob with her fist and her tongue pressed against the inside of her cheek. She’s not so bad. Maybe I won’t ignore her next time I see her at Dean’s.
“What have you two been drinking? Or smoking or snorting?” The other officer with the blond hair and mustache asks.
“I’m swear I’m fine!” Rosie whines as they wheel her into the elevator.
“Officer?” Dex’s deep voice startles me. His eyebrow is cocked at me as he holds a handkerchief on the top of his smooth bald head. “I think she clearly had too much to drink, but there was nothing illegal going on here.”
“What happened to your head?” the blond officer asks.
“I slipped in her vomit,” Dex replies, handing the handkerchief to Hector so he can use it on his nose.
“And your nose?” the fat officer asks. “You slip and fall, too? Bump into a door, maybe?”
“Caught an elbow at a party.”
Fatty doesn’t look too impressed with this lie, but there’s nothing he can do about it. They subject me to a half-hearted interrogation about what Rosie and I were drinking at the pool party—I don’t know what she was drinking, Officer. I only met her about ten minutes before we left together—Then they get in touch with the medics to make sure she’s still conscious before they roll their eyes and disappear into the elevator.
My stomach goes sour as I realize Hector and Dex just lied to two officers of the law for me, to protect me from the consequences of my own recklessness. And it’s not the first time they’ve done it. In fact, I can’t even count the number of times they’ve smoothed things over for me with the authorities. And how many times has David Nichols, the head press officer at Westbrook Oil, fielded questions about my latest scandal?
The tabloid headlines flash in my mind: CASH’S FLING RUSHED TO HOSPITAL AFTER OVERDOSE SCARE… Just like all the headlines from the past two years: CASH AND TARA’S SECRET ABORTION… CASH’S WILD WEEKEND IN CABO… CASH’S JOYRIDE ENDS IN DUI… VANESSA ALLEN DEAD.
My dad’s words echo in my head: No, you can’t get rid of your bodyguards, Cash. They’re there to protect you from yourself.
Maybe it’s time I started protecting them from me.

Logan has thirty days to save Close-Up magazine from bankruptcy. And he needs me to pretend to be his wife at a couples’ retreat, where Logan and I will attempt to snag an exclusive celebrity interview that will revive our readership. If I can help him save Close-Up, he’ll inherit his father’s publishing empire and I’ll get promoted to editor, with a very healthy raise.
Logan has thirty days to prove to his father that he’s not just a bad boy womanizer. And I have seven days to prove my investigative journalism skills to Logan at a couples’ retreat meant to revive the sex lives of dissatisfied married couples.
This raise is going to cost me.

Chapter 1 Logan
As I slide into the raven-haired CEO of Brunswick Publishing, I hear another squeak.
“Did you hear that? Do we have mice?” asks the muffled voice of a man, his question immediately followed by another squeak from my closet-companion.
I freeze mid-thrust. “Shh. We have to be quiet,” I remind Helen Brunswick as I press her too-thin-for-my-taste body against the back wall of the coat closet, where we are currently celebrating our new partnership.
Helen just agreed to sell the majority share in her failing publishing company to my father’s cutthroat investment firm, Angel Investments. We aren’t really angel investors, and we’re far from angels. My father, brother, and I are highly skilled in the art of hostile takeovers. Though, my technique is much less hostile.
What can I say? I’m a lover, not a fighter.
Helen giggles softly. “I’ll be quiet as a mouse,” the forty-three-year-old CEO says in a babyish voice.
Quiet as a mouse? Is this woman serious?
I shake my head as I thrust into her again. Squeak. Thrust. Squeak. Thrust. Squeak. Rolling my eyes, I realize I’m going to have to take a different approach with this squeaker toy before someone hears her and finds us in here.
No one can find us in here. I’ve been warned a million times by my father and the ethics committee at Angel Investments that I’m not allowed to use my cock to get women to sign on the dotted line. My father didn’t think it was funny when I mentioned that, unlike my older brother Everett, my dick isn’t pointy enough to sign anything.
Coiling my right arm around Helen’s waist, I pull her flush against my chest and whisper in her ear, “Do you like it rough?”
“Oh, yes,” she moans.
“How about we do a little roleplaying. I’m a dirty—but devastatingly handsome—pirate, and you’re a ripe, beautiful maiden. I’ve come to have my way with you before I pillage your town.”
The scenario wasn’t very far from the truth, but Helen didn’t seem to catch the symbolism.
She lets out a breathy chuckle. “You’re so naughty, Logan. I love it. I’ll be anything and anyone you want. Just don’t stop fucking me.”
I tighten my arm around her waist and gently clasp my other hand over her mouth as I whisper, “Aye, fair maiden. I’ll be taking what I want,” I say in an awful pirate accent, keeping one hand over her mouth as I slide my other hand between her thighs. “And what I want is your sweet, sweet nectar.”
And by nectar, I’m referring to the majority stake in your $322 million publishing company.
I rub her swollen bud as she breathes heavily against the palm of my hand. Then, I thrust into her harder, my eight-inch cock slamming into her cervix. She takes this as a cue to begin acting the part of fair maiden—a little too enthusiastically.
This time she doesn’t squeak. This time she screams. And her scream is so loud and high-pitched, I’ll have tinnitus for a month.
“Shit!” I whisper as I frantically pull out of her and attempt to tuck my throbbing erection into my pants.
“I’m so sorry!” Helen whispers as she bends over to reach for the pink G-string wrapped around her ankles.
But the coat closet in the employee break room at Brunswick Publishing is too small, and she can’t seem to bend over far enough. Every time she tries, she grinds her bare ass against the bulge in my pants.
“Hurry up! I hear voices coming,” I urge.
“I can’t reach my panties. You need to get out first!”
I reach for my zipper and pull it up, but it snags on my shirt tail. “Fuck!” I whisper as I try to unzip it, but it’s stuck.
I try yanking the fabric to rip it out of the zipper, but it won’t budge. Now, I’m not only standing in a closet with the bare-assed CEO, I’m also flushed and sweaty, with a waning erection in my pants.
I quickly button my pants and the top button on my suit jacket, but that’s clearly not enough to cover up the indecency below my waist. The fashion police will have to forgive me this once as I button the second button on my jacket, which works only slightly better to cover up the bulge and the bunny-ear of white fabric sticking out of my zipper.
I don’t hear any more voices outside the closet, so this is probably the right time to sneak out. But as I spin around and open the door, I get tangled in a red wool sweater. I try to pull it off me, but the metal hanger comes off the rod and hooks onto my collar, poking me in the back of the neck.
“Shit!” I whisper, contorting my body so I can reach back and remove the hanger from my collar. “Get it off me!”
“Get what off you? Hurry up!”
Somehow, the stupid sweater will not fall away. It’s sticking to my jacket like static cling. Finally, red-faced and feeling as if I’m about to combust with frustration, I throw open the closet door to escape the demon sweater. Standing in the middle of the employee break room is a group of at least a dozen people, all staring at me as I step out of the closet with a semi.
“That’s one way to come out of the closet,” says a male voice that sounds like it’s coming from the back of the group.
Some of them snicker. Some of the women look crestfallen. A silver-haired man I recognize as the head of acquisitions is staring at me with his mouth agape. One group of three guys near the coffee machine seem to be paying each other—probably making good on a wager of how long it would take me to get into Helen’s panties.
“What are you waiting for?” Helen whispers, clearly still facing the back of the closet. “Hurry up so I can get my underwear on.”
I smile as I softly close the door behind me. “She thought she heard a mouse in there, so I was just trying to help her find it.”
The three guys near the coffee machine chuckle as they continue settling their bets.
Helen emerges from the closet, her raven hair disheveled as she straightens her skirt. “This isn’t what it looks like. Mr. Pierce was merely helping me…reach something up…high…in the… He’s very tall. Very…big.”
An older woman in an ivory pantsuit stares at my crotch and scrunches her nose in disgust. “Have you no shame?”
I cock an eyebrow as I flash the old woman my best seductive smile. “Wanna find out?”
* * *
“To say I’m disappointed with you right now would be an understatement and completely useless,” my father begins as he pours two glasses of bourbon from a crystal decanter in his corner office at Angel Investments. Keeping one drink for himself, he hands the other to my brother Everett. “It is blatantly clear you have no regard for how your actions reflect on the company, and you’ve once again left me with the task of cleaning up your mess.”
“I can fix this,” I say, pouring myself a drink.
“How?” my father demands, unbuttoning his jacket before taking a seat at his desk. “Helen has already been warned by her board of directors that any deal with our name on it will be rejected. And might I remind you, there are a plethora of investors eager to buy them out. Not to mention Ronald just informed me the ethics committee will be reviewing your work on this acquisition.”
Everett takes a seat in the chair across from my father, leaning back with a smug grin on his face. “Yeah, how are you going to fix this, Logan? Going to offer to go down on old Helen this time?”
I chuckle at his barb. “For your information, brother, forty-year-old women are great in bed. They’re just not very easy to bribe.”
Everett rolls his eyes at my reference to the fact that the ethics committee has had to investigate—and cover up—at least four of his acquisitions for suspected bribery.
“All right. That’s quite enough,” my father interrupts, setting his tumbler of bourbon on the desk and expelling a heavy sigh. “You’ve both been caught with your pants down more times than I can count.”
“I’ve never slept with a client,” Everett insists.
“I was speaking metaphorically. I know you’re more like your mother, Everett, about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the head, but do try to keep up.”
I stifle a laugh. “With all due respect, Dad, I hardly think having sex is on par with bribery. One of those is clearly illegal.”
My father narrows his eyes at me. “Some people might think sleeping with someone to get ahead in business is a form of prostitution.”
“And those people have no understanding of the law,” I reply.
My father shakes his head, probably regretting that he forced me to get a law degree. “I’ve given you both more than enough chances to turn away from these unscrupulous tactics. It’s time I do something about it. Something drastic.”
“Cue the ultimatum,” I remark, taking a seat in the chair next to Everett.
My father’s distinguished air of discontent unravels into a devilish grin. “I think you’ll like this ultimatum, son. In fact,” he continues, shooting a glance in Everett’s direction, “I think you’ll both be very pleased. Provided you follow the rules, one of you stands to make spectacular gains.”
Everett cocks an eyebrow. “Could we dispense with the cryptic allusions and discuss this ultimatum you speak of?”
My father chuckles. “Everett, I realize patience was never your strong suit. I understood this the moment you bribed a classmate to be your friend in primary school. You’ve never had the patience to cultivate relationships. You’ve always seen money as the only tool in your box.”
I brace myself as my father turns to me. “Go ahead. Hit me with your best shot.”
“You’re also impatient, Logan,” he continues. “You think your good looks are your key to success. Taking women straight to bed instead of courting them is your only approach. It’s no surprise to me you’re still single at your age.”
I chuckle with disbelief. “I’m twenty-eight. I’m in my prime. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying life before you settle down. If we’re going to talk about singlehood reaching its expiration date, you’ve been divorced for seven years. When are you going to get back in the saddle, old boy?”
My father nods and smiles. “Funny you should mention that. I’ve met someone new, and I’ve decided to retire.”
“What?” Everett blurts out.
“What Everett means is…what the hell, Dad?” I exclaim. “We haven’t even met her and you’re suddenly going to retire just so you can be with her? Are you two engaged? Is it… It is a woman, right?”
My father rolls his eyes. “Prissy is most definitely a woman. And not that it’s any of your business, but, yes, we are engaged. As for you two meeting her, I’ve already scheduled a dinner for noon on Sunday.” He pauses to appreciate our slack-jawed expressions for a moment, then continues. “As for the ultimatum… Now that I’m retiring, I’ll need one of you to take the majority share in the company, as I won’t have much time for board meetings once Prissy and I are traveling.”
Everett laughs, setting his tumbler on the desk and combing his fingers through his dark hair as he leans back in the chair. “I accept. Rest assured the company will be in good hands.”
I roll my eyes. “A little quick on the draw there, Everett. You might want to button the snap on the old bribery holster and let him finish. Besides, Father knows I’m clearly the better brother for the job.”
“Better at what?” Everett bellows.
“Oh, I think we know what you’re better at, Logan. All of New York knows what you’re better at,” my father continues, his nostrils flaring with exasperation. “As I was saying, I just struck a deal with Kensington Publishing. I have your uncle working on their fitness magazine division, but I want you to work on putting together a business revitalization plan for their nature magazine, Open Sky,” he says to Everett. “And you, Logan, will be making a plan for their celebrity gossip magazine, Close-Up.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me. That rag has dumped on me for years, and now I’m supposed to save them from bankruptcy?” I protest, my voice jumping at least two octaves like a child protesting chores.
Close-Up magazine used to be the most popular celebrity gossip rag on the shelf, until some antiquated marketing tactics and bad management failed to deliver them into the digital age. Now they’ve apparently sold out to my father in a last ditch effort to save themselves from bankruptcy. That means it’s our responsibility to do what their upper management should have done years ago and hope it’s not too late.
Our company doesn’t usually buy out another company with the intention of revamping them. Sure, we will usually pitch that as a good possibility. But most of the time, we break up the company, lay off scores of employees to cut costs, and liquidate all assets before moving on.
But trying to save a company is no small feat. And trying to save a celebrity lifestyle magazine like Close-Up… Well, let’s just say this is not my father’s usual modus operandi. This Prissy woman must be making him soft.
“I’m aware both of these companies will present many obstacles for you two. But I’m certain you’ll rise to the challenge. Whoever’s plan has the most positive effect on the bottom line at the end of thirty days will be awarded the majority share in Angel Investments.”
“Thirty days?” Everett exclaims. “Surely, you must be joking. We can’t do this in thirty days.”
My father drains the rest of the bourbon in his glass then leans back in his tufted mahogany leather chair. “I have faith in you both. Just keep your bribes to yourself, Everett. And you,” he says, glaring at me. “Keep your hands to yourself. Don’t let me down.”
* * *
I enter my office and immediately make a call to beckon my assistant Nora. “Close the door,” I say as soon as she arrives.
She shuts the door softly and turns to face me, her auburn hair framing her eager face as she holds her mobile phone behind her back. “What can I help you with, sir?”
Nora is a great assistant. She wears her hair down to hide the custom-fitted Bluetooth earpiece-slash-microphone in her ear. It records every command I give her, so she can replay our conversations in the event she forgets what she was told to do. I don’t want this conversation recorded.
I tap my ear and say, “Give it to me.”
She doesn’t hesitate as she removes the gel earpiece and places it on my desk in front of me.
“And the phone.”
She places her iPhone next to it.
I quickly snatch it up and power off the phone before I begin. “I have a special project for you, but no one can know about this. Do you understand?”
She mimes pulling a zipper across her lips. “My lips are sealed.”
“Good,” I say, motioning to the chair across from me. “Have a seat.”

Guest Post – Top 10 Songs That Remind Me of the Plot Just know that I’m rubbing my hands together with excitement over discussing my playlist for Hardwired. When I was first asked for a playlist for the first book I wrote I had no idea that was a thing. I of course listened to music while I was writing, but I didn’t make a playlist, but now I’m much more in the know so I’m prepared.
First and foremost to the song that gave birth to this entire book. Halsey’s Gasoline. I heard this song while on a road trip, and pulled off the interstate to get my thoughts written down so I wouldn’t lose them. Luke was born on the side of Interstate 70 just outside of Washington, PA.
Taylor Swift- I Know Places– Perfect on the run song.
Eric Church- The Outsiders– This song makes me think of Luke, Dean and Kip as a unit.
Taylor Swift- This Love– I love all the ocean elements of this song, it just fit so perfectly. It’s definitely Luke and Jen’s love song.
Miranda Lambert- Tin Man- This song personifies Jen for me while she grieves.
Kenny Chesney- Wild Child– Bella has to have a song too, coincidentally enough I always think of my own daughter when I hear this song.
Cody Jinks- Loud and Heavy– The opening of this song gave me all the feels when writing Luke’s SEAL scenes. The lyrics are powerful.
Brett Young- Would You Wait for Me– This one just seems to obvious for a military romance
Thank you so much for having me here and helping me celebrate Hardwired!
