Collin looked to Nicole. “And thank you. I really enjoyed lunch.”
As Nicole shrugged that same glimmer of happiness he’d spotted at the market was in her eyes. “It was the least I could do for you giving me your rosemary.”
The least she could do? She had no idea what she’d actually done for him. He’d walked in feeling like crap, and she’d helped him feel better, getting him to talk about food and places he hadn’t thought of in a long time.
As he looked into her eyes, the urge to tell her that almost overwhelmed him.
Collin shook off the feeling and glanced around the dining room. Except for the waitstaff, the restaurant was empty. “I should go.”
Nicole followed his gaze. “And I should get back to work.”
As they rose from the table, what felt like a fifty pound rucksack of reality and responsibility clawed its way back onto his shoulders.
Nicole looked at Collin, frowning as if she saw the invisible load he was carrying. She lifted her hand as if planning to reach out to him, but lowered it instead. “Bye, Collin.”
As her hand fell, something that felt like hope went with it. “Bye.”
Collin walked out of the restaurant. After a few short hours of being with Nicole, he was already missing her…
