Excerpt I’m a guy, and as a guy, I am a great appreciator of the female form in all its glory. I’ve met women who could easily be supermodels, but who were unattractive because of their personalities, intellect, or lack thereof. I have dated women who were what some guys might consider average looking, but who blew me away with their intelligence, wit, or sense of humor, and that made them sexy as hell.
One thing I’m certain of is that finding a woman who is gorgeous, intelligent, funny, doesn’t take herself too seriously, and has a kind heart, is nearly impossible. It’s like finding a unicorn in the middle of an island full of mermaids while standing on a hill made up of all the gold from the lost city of Atlantis. “Sweet Kristi Yamaguchi’s daisy dress,” I whisper more to myself than anyone else. “You have got to be kidding me.”
“This is not what you think,” Luc says and there is a note of panic in his voice that makes me backup a step.
“Really?” I ask as my anger rises up to the surface. What kind of bubble headed moron does he think I am? I wasn’t born yesterday. “Because it looks to me like you are standing over the dead body of our competitor.”
“Okay,” Luc says hesitantly. “It is what it looks like.”
“Darn it, Luc!” I snap. “How could you?”
“What?” he says surprised. “You can’t possibly think that I did this?”
“Well, I don’t really know what to think right now, now do I?” I bite back.
“Sophie, please,” he pleads. “You’ve got to believe me.”
“This looks bad, Luc,” I tell him. “Really, really bad.”
“I know.” He lets out a frustrated sigh and pushes a hand through his thick hair.
Luc and I stand there, facing each other off, with Layla’s body sprawled over a chair between us. I’m not sure which is more disconcerting, the ropes tied around her nude body or the ones tied around her neck.
“Please don’t run from me. I’m not going to hurt you.”
“I’m not going to lie, Luc, this scares me,” I admit.
“I know. Me too.”
He sighs again and pulls his hand through his hair. The silence between us speaks volumes. This was supposed to be my second chance at the Games. My last one as a singles competitor was taken from me by my Stepmonster and her evil henchman when they broke my leg. But when the opportunity to replace half of a pairs team came up, I jumped on it. Now, it seems like I should have paid more attention to the fine print.
“You have to believe me,” he pleads with those big, brown puppy dog eyes, the ones that have probably gotten him out of more scrapes than he deserves.
I let out a sigh and admit, “I do.”
“Thank fuck,” Luc blurts out. “But what are we going to do now?”

Excerpt #3 Harrison sinks into a white patio chair with Romeo flopped on his lap. Romeo lapses into a state of nirvana as Harrison scratches his belly. When his hand moves up to scratch under Romeo’s snout, Romeo’s little pink tongue dangles from the side as he drools with delight.
“Nice view,” Harrison says, looking at the bay.
“I love watching the sailboats.” And you, I think privately. Harrison looks rugged and relaxed as he strokes Romeo with his broad hand. Even at ease, his muscular arms look powerful. Man, I could get lost in those arms…
“Do you sail?” he asks, snapping me back to reality.
“Me? Nooo. I’m not too sporty.” I tilt my head and smile at him. “Let me guess, you’re an avid sailor.”
He chuckles. “I’ll take you sailing sometime, if you like. Do you swim?”
“Of course, I was raised in Miami,” I say affronted. “And my dad calls me guppy.”
“Guppy,” he repeats with a surprised laugh. “Why does he call you that?”
“Dad’s a marine biologist. The first time I went in the ocean, I was only a toddler, but he says I took to water like a guppy.”
All of a sudden, we hear Fizzy yell, “shiite” from the kitchen. I push the sliding glass door open and dart toward the kitchen. Harrison makes it there before I do.
We find Fizzy leaning over the sink holding a paper towel wrapped around her thumb. In seconds, it’s soaked in blood.
“What happened?” I ask, gaping at her.
“I cut my thumb,” Fizzy says, wincing.
Harrison takes Fizzy’s hand and applies firm pressure above the knuckle of her left thumb. When the bleeding slows down, he examines the cut.
“You don’t need stitches. I have some tissue glue that will seal it shut,” he says.
“Tissue glue?” That sounds a little iffy to me. “Fizzy, you need to go to the ER,” I tell her in a no-nonsense voice.
“I am not wasting all night waiting there for a little cut,” Fizzy says. “I’d rather have Harrison take care of it.”
“Have you had a tetanus shot in the past five years?” he asks.
“Yeah, two years ago.” Her blue eyes light up. “When I almost lost my pinky toe. It was really gross.”
“Stop, please don’t go into details.” I stare at her bloody thumb and begin to feel lightheaded. “Look how it’s bleeding! What if it gets infected? Gangrene might set in.”
“Gangrene? That’s nonsense. Dermabond forms a barrier against bacteria,” Harrison says in a patient tone.
“Still, I would get stitches,” I whisper to Fizzy. “It looks awful.”
“Stitches are not necessary. I know what I’m doing, Francesca,” Harrison says, his jaw tight.
“But…”
“Will you two stop arguing about my poor thumb?” Fizzy cuts in, giggling.
“How can you laugh when you’re losing so much blood?” The alcohol has probably dulled her pain.
“I’m going to get my medical bag,” Harrison says. “Keep your hand elevated until I get back.”
“I will, Doc,” Fizzy promises, winking at me.
I throw my hands in the air. Let her do whatever she wants. There’s no reasoning with a tipsy bartender.
As soon as Harrison leaves, Fizzy turns to me. “Quit arguing with Harrison. You’re pissing him off.”
“I’m not arguing for the sake of arguing. I’m worried about you.”
“I trust him,” Fizzy counters. “You should too.”
We lapse into silence until Harrison returns carrying his medical bag. He joins Fizzy at the sink, where she’s still standing with her hand elevated, as he told her to do. The paper towel around her thumb is soaked with blood.
Romeo is barking and making a commotion until Harrison gives him a firm command to sit and he obeys instantly. When I start to ask a question, Harrison’s no-nonsense look shuts me up too.
He opens his medical bag and pulls on surgical gloves. I notice Romeo starts to tremble, so I lift him in my arms.
“Don’t worry. He’s not examining you today, baby. It’s Fizzy’s turn,” I whisper in Romeo’s ear.
I let out a loud gasp when Harrison peels the bloody paper towel off her thumb.
Harrison looks at me like I’ve lost my mind. “Don’t look if it bothers you. It’s not deep at all,” he says, flushing the wound with sterile water and Betadine.
I’d rather not look, but I feel I should. Fizzy is tipsy and she might go into shock.
“Are you sure she shouldn’t go to the ER? I once had a cut like that and the ER doctor referred me to a plastic surgeon,” I inform him.
“He should have referred you to a shrink,” Harrison mutters under his breath.
“Gosh, you don’t have to be insulting.” First, I’m nutty and now he says I need a shrink because I’m looking out for Fizzy. How rude.
Romeo gives a low growl as if reminding me that Harrison still has his lab reports. I better hold my tongue.
Harrison remains silent as he meticulously applies the Dermabond in thin layers. Finally, he uses steri-tapes and splints her thumb.
Fizzy doesn’t bat an eye. “Why’d you use a splint?” she asks.
“It’s a precaution so the wound stays closed. It can come off in a couple of days.” He shuts his medical bag. “I’m gonna go now.”
“But you haven’t had your margarita yet,” Fizzy says, exchanging a look with me.
“I’ll take a rain check. Call me if you have any concerns or if it gets swollen or the skin around it turns red. Francesca has my number.”
“Call me Frankie,” I tell him. I wonder why he’s being so formal all of a sudden. He always calls me Frankie.
“Thanks so much, Doc,” Fizzy says with a friendly smile.
“You’re welcome. Take care now.” Harrison heads toward the door.
“I really appreciate how you took care of Fizzy. Thank you.” I hesitate for a minute, but I have to ask. “Are you sure she doesn’t need another tetanus shot?”
“One every five years is enough,” he says in a level tone. The lighthearted mood Harrison arrived with has been replaced by a tense one and he doesn’t look pleased with me.
“Oh, okay, but if it starts looking any worse, I’ll make sure she goes to a doctor.”
“I am a doctor. Where do you think I got my diploma from, Wal-Mart?” he asks, losing patience.
“But you’re an animal doctor, not a people one,” I say before I can stop myself. Why did I have to slurp down that second margarita like it was a smoothie? I can’t stop blurting out every dumb thing that pops into my mind.
“Francesca!” Fizzy admonishes. “Don’t mind her, she’s had one too many.”
“I have not!” I say indignantly.
“Thanks again, Harrison,” Fizzy says, trying to smooth things over.
“You’re welcome.”
He leaves without saying another word to me. I turn to Fizzy and shrug. “What got his shorts in a bunch?”
“Hmm, let me see…” Fizzy taps her chin. “Could it be that you doubted his medical ability? Really, Frankie, I don’t know what got into you.”
“Oh, no.” I clutch my head. “Was I that bad?”
Fizzy snorts. “Hello? You second-guessed him every step of the way. Then you acted like he wasn’t a real doctor. I hate to tell you this, but you were a little rude to him.”
I groan. “He was rude to me too. I didn’t appreciate his comment about the shrink. Anyway, who knew he’d be so sensitive?”
“I don’t know what you’re complaining about. I’m the patient and I thought he was kind and caring.” Fizzy gets a dreamy look on her face and I know she’s up to something. “Harrison can take care of me anytime…he has such big strong hands, yet his touch is so gentle.”
“Stop already. I know he has amazing hands,” I wail. “You’re making me feel worse. I should apologize to him, right?”
“Damn right. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harrison tells Chloe he never wants to see you again.”
“Not if I apologize to him first.”
The doorbell rings and we both jump.
“Here’s your chance,” Fizzy crows.
“I hope it’s not Harrison. I was hoping he’d cool off first.”
Fizzy starts clucking and flapping her crooked arms.
“So I’m a chicken. What else is new?” I ask.
Fizzy darts up from her chair and races to get the door before me. She flings it open and Harrison is standing there.
“You’re back!” Fizzy exclaims. She claps a hand over her scarlet mouth to muffle her giggles. “Boy, are you a glutton for punishment.”
Not cracking a smile, Harrison looks straight at me.
Romeo: Grrrr… What a fiasco! Francesca’s antics are going to make me lose the best doctor I’ve ever had. She had the nerve to second-guess my hero and now he’s mad at her. I don’t blame him one bit.
I agree with Fizzy—Harrison has magical hands. When he pets me I go into a trance. Scout is one lucky dog.
Lady, you better grovel at Harrison’s feet and make it up to him, especially since he came back. Otherwise, I’ll take matters into my own paws.

Excerpt #2 Moonlight illuminated the tower as Raj and I crossed into the meadow. The handcart’s wheels squeaked as I pulled it to a stop at the base of the tower. Raj had been true to his word and purchased all the supplies we needed for winter. I couldn’t complain—I was grateful he’d done it. I only hoped he didn’t expect a miracle in return.
Now I had the chore of transporting everything into the tower. Luckily, I’d brought my largest knapsack. As I loaded vessels of lentils, bags of flour, and a few jars of syrup into my bag, Raj stood over me.
“You’re bringing all that up there?” he asked.
“It’s better than leaving it down here.”
“You really live up there all the time?”
“Yes, I only ever come out to gather edibles, or when we’re desperate for supplies.”
“But how do you get water?”
“We have a well inside the tower. Can you help me?” I tossed him an empty burlap sack. If he was so insistent on being here, he might as well help me.
“It seems like a lonely existence.”
I eyed him. Lonely? What did he know of loneliness? I didn’t feel like admitting to this stranger how desperately lonely the past five years had been, how I lay awake at night wishing I had someone to talk to, feeling as if the silence would drive me to insanity. No, he didn’t need to know any of that.
“It’s not that bad. Rapunzel isn’t one for talking, but we have a cat. His name is Jester. He keeps me company most of the time.”
“A cat?”
“Yes. He’s mostly feral. But he’s friendly enough, and he comes and goes as he pleases. He’s even learned to climb the vines to get in and out of the tower. He’s quite clever.” I adjusted the pack’s straps on my shoulders. “Now, let’s get up there before Rapunzel…” I stopped myself. “Let’s get up there.”
With the pack strapped to my back, I turned to the tower. Wind rushed past, battering my hair against my cheeks, as I prepared to speak the spell.
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!” My words carried on the wind, echoing through the forest.
I waited, nervousness making my hands grow clammy as I held to the pack’s straps, but why did I feel so uneasy? Was it because Raj was with me?
I turned to him. He stood with haunting dark eyes as he watched a coil of ropy, matted hair drop from the tower’s only window high above us. I stepped to the length of hair and grabbed it, holding my breath against the scent of unwashed scalp. I never got used to that smell.
“Should I follow you?” Raj asked.
“Yes. But let me enter first.” Gripping the hair tightly, I started the climb. I made my way toward the window at the top of the tower. Halfway up, my muscles burned, and I focused on breathing to make it the rest of the way. This part was always the hardest, and the sack of supplies weighing me down wasn’t helping. Why did Varlocke have to put his daughter into such an impossibly tall tower?
When I reached the window, I grabbed the ledge. The worn stones felt smooth under my palms as I climbed over, then landed inside. As I straightened, I pulled off the pack and left it on the floor, then focused on the room. Moonlight illuminated the bare stones walls, the well sitting at the room’s center, the wooden chairs, roughly-hewn tables, huge bookcases cluttered with dusty spell journals and vials, and the bed where Rapunzel lay.
I stepped over the matted coils of hair. Pieces of rat and bird bones lay trapped in the knotted strands, seeming to glow white against the dark hair. The sound of gnawing stopped me.
She wasn’t.
“Rapunzel,” I said quietly. “What are you doing?”
The gnawing continued. I approached her on quiet feet, afraid of what I might find. Behind me, Raj scrambled inside the room.
Please don’t let it be the prince.
When I reached her side, her pale, skeleton-white skin glowed in the moonlight. She held a rat.
I exhaled, grateful it was only a rodent and not something—someone—else. A crust of bread and a handful of wild beets sat on the bedside table, but they were untouched.
Raj’s footsteps echoed, and I turned to face him. His tall, lean frame looked so out of place. Only the high sorcerer ever visited, and to have an Outlander squire inside my home unnerved me.
“Is she eating something?” he asked. “What is that?”
“Sorry. It’s the cat’s fault. He catches them and leaves them on her lap. He thinks he’s giving her a prize or something. Rapunzel does that with them sometimes—with the rats—eats them, I mean.” I stumbled over my words, feeling immeasurably mortified that Raj had to see it. But it could’ve been worse.
I approached her. She looked up, as if only seeing me now, and she hissed. With her red-rimmed eyes, it looked as if she hadn’t been sleeping, and her collarbones seemed to be protruding more than I remembered. Her white gown hung off her meatless frame, but at least it was the clean one I’d left for her. She’d managed to change clothes—at least there was that.
“Where is the prince?” Raj asked.
“I don’t know.” I scanned the room. With the large piles of hair covering the floor, he could’ve been hidden, but we should’ve seen some clue he was here—his feet or a hand poking out. Something. “You’re certain he came up here?”
“Yes, positive.”
I studied the tower more thoroughly but didn’t see anything that resembled the prince. Odd. Where was he?
“Rapunzel,” I said, turning to her, “we’re looking for a prince. Have you seen him?”
She shook her head, clutching the rat, her fingers digging into the carcass.
“Please,” Raj said. “I need to find him. His father is the king. He’ll be very sad if he loses his only son. Can’t you tell us where he is?”
Rapunzel focused on the man, but she remained silent. Outside, the sky lightened. Pink streaked through the gray as dawn approached. As the sun rose, sunlight streamed into the room, giving light to the dark places. Something thudded inside the well, and Raj followed me as I maneuvered around the coiled hair toward the raised ring of stones surrounding the deep drop that went straight through the bottom of the tower.
“Is there something in the well?” Raj asked.
“Someone probably.”
I pried open the lid. Sitting atop the wide-mouthed bucket was the prince, who stared up at us with a vacant expression. Hair coiled around him as blue bands of magic wrapped his wrists and ankles. I grabbed his tunic with both hands and attempted to lug him out. He was heavier than he looked.
“How’d he get in there?” Raj asked.
“Rapunzel. She tried to throw him down, I assume.”
“She can do that?”
“With her hair, yes. She’s clever when she’s motivated.”
“He was looking at me!” Rapunzel yelled. Well, at least she was finally speaking.

Excerpt #1 When I wake the next morning, I don’t get out of bed right away; instead, I shift my gaze down to the warm body cuddled in my arms. I stare down at Sophia while she sleeps soundly in my arms a little longer than I normally do. My eyes trace the soft lines and features of her face. Her dark lashes are fanned across her cheeks that are tinged pink with warmth from sleeping. Her lips that are naturally pouty have seemed to grow in size during the pregnancy. Everything about her is the same yet so incredibly different. I’ve never thought pregnant women were beautiful, never thought much about them at all, but Sophia, the way she carries pregnancy, she looks like a fucking goddess. She’s never looked more beautiful than she does carrying my child.
I spent most of the dawn watching her sleep. Focusing on the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest, her parted lips, the sensation of her soft skin beneath my rough hands. When I wasn’t doing that, I was talking to our little guy. It’s become a morning ritual lately. While his mom is still asleep, I chat with him about anything and everything. Excerpt Myla is Taken
As I ride Nightshade into camp, we slow to a walk. At this point, there shouldn’t be anyone running around the compound, but you never know. My horse’s hooves make sloshing sounds in the mud as I navigate through the labyrinth of cabins. Some places are neatly closed up. Others have open doors, the cabin’s interior showing as a mess of quickly piled belongings. Once Armageddon invaded, everyone was forced to evacuate through the temporary Pulpitum station. Clearly, some people handled the rush better than others.
I make a mental note to send servants back here to go through the cabins, inventory leftover items, and ensure they get to their rightful owners. My court wasn’t pleased to be stuck in Purgatory. Leaving in a rush for Armageddon would only make things worse. The least we can do is ensure they get their things.
I turn down the so-called street which holds my old cabin.
Beyond the spindly trees, the horizon line starts to lighten. Between nightfall and morning, there’s a certain kind of magic in the air. That power attracts some demon breeds to cause trouble. Shape shifters, mostly. And although there haven’t been many demons by our compound, that was mostly because the place was overrun with thrax. Now that my people have left, I’d expect more demons to poke about.
All of which is why I’m not surprised when I see a wispy shape before my cabin. Could be a shape shifter. Or a muto demon. Perhaps even a false vision from a hedge witch. As Night walks me closer, my blood freezes. The shape is none of those things.
It’s Myla.
And she’s a ghost.
Terror rattles through my nervous system. I slide off Night and race over to the spectral version of Myla. My girl hunches over in pain.
“Lincoln,” she moans.
I kneel before her, tilting my head to catch her line of vision. “I’m here.”
“Some thrax asshole in a toga showed up. He wants me to serve him for eternity.” She hisses in a breath. “I told him to fuck off.”
I recall what happened with Devak, Silvinio and Jali. “This happened to some of my ministers. They were approached by the Tithe, too.”
She hisses in a pained breath. “What does he want with me?”
“You have angelic blood; he’s obsessed with angels. Beyond that, I don’t know.”
She hunches over into a crouch. “It hurts.”
“That happened to Jali. It’s because you’re not accepting the change. Keep fighting. If you stop and give in, he’ll turn you into an effigy.”
She looks up at me through her mass of hair. “A what?”
“A stone soldier that will serve him forever. That won’t happen, though. I’m coming for you.”
“Then we’ll kill that dickhead.”
“Yes, we will. I promise.”
“Good.” Myla falls over and moans. A moment later, her ghostly self vanishes. I race over to Night, ready to hoist myself back on her saddle and return to Myla’s house. Her body is still alive, even if her ghost has been separated. At least, that’s what happened with Jali, Devak and Silvinio. I must get her physical self to safety. I set my foot in the stirrup, ready to mount Night and take off. That’s when I hear it.
A low moan.
And it’s coming from my cabin.
All the hair on my neck stands on end. I’d know that particular voice anywhere.
It can’t be.
Once again, I set both feet on solid ground. My hurt thuds against my rib cage. I rush over to my cabin and throw open the door.
Walker lies on the floor. The back of his head is a mass of blood.

It was as if she were trying to annoy him.
After the first period, he got up, his hands fisting at his sides. “I need another beer.”
Owen, who had been quiet the entire time since he was apparently answering emails on his phone, looked up. “Grab me a soda, will you? I need some caffeine, and since I’m driving us home, I’ll let you drink.” He winked toward Blake. “I think you’re going to need alcohol tonight.”
Graham grunted and stomped his way through the aisle and up the stairs so he could get a beer. Since everyone and their mother got up during intermission, he’d have to wait in line, but maybe that would help him cool off. He was just so freaking pissed that she would dare root for another team. And that made no sense. Why could she get under his skin so easily?
“Hey, Graham, wait up,” Derek said as he jogged up behind him.
“I don’t know what you did to piss Blake off, but I should probably let you know she’d rooting for Toronto just to needle you.”
Graham turned. “Excuse me?”
He must have looked like he wanted to rip someone’s arm off because a few people moved back in the line and Derek held up his hands. “She’s a diehard Avs fan. Even owns a signed Sakic jersey and keeps a spare she can wear during games. The signed one only comes out during the playoffs. It’s got to be killing her to root for the other team, and it must be because of you.”
That little witch. “How do you know it’s not because of you?” he asked, intrigued and pissed off all at the same time that she would do something like that.
“Because we’re friends, not close ones, but friends. This isn’t a date or anything, just to let you know. I think she’s single, but since my girlfriend up in Seattle would skin me if I even dared to look at Blake that way, I’m just fine as I am. Anyway, I thought you should know that she’s just trying to piss you off. Bro code and all that.”
Graham clenched his teeth. “Bro code.” He ordered his beer, Owen’s soda, and paid for Derek and Blake’s drinks since Derek had been so helpful.
“What are you going to do about Blake?” Derek asked as they made their way back to the entrance and showed their tickets.
“Don’t know yet.” And that was the problem. He never knew about anything where it came to this woman. She could intrigue him, turn him on, and piss him off all in the span of ten minutes. That had to be a record.
He handed Owen his drink and sat back down, studying Blake as he did so.
“What?” she asked, brows raised.
“Nothing,” he said softly. “Not yet anyway.”
She blinked and opened her mouth to say something, then froze as people started to chant, “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” around them.
Graham slowly looked up at the huge screen on top of the ice and cursed. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
Blake laughed. “No way. No fucking way.”
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
He was pretty sure Owen was yelling the loudest, and Graham was going to have to kick his brother’s ass when this was over.
“Fuck it,” Graham growled and gripped the back of Blake’s head and crushed his mouth to hers. They both froze a moment as cheers erupted around them before he sank deeper into the kiss. He didn’t open his mouth, wouldn’t let his tongue touch hers, but the moment of lips against lips left him breathless.
He pulled back, his eyes wide, Blake’s even wider.
“What the hell was that?” Blake gasped, her cheeks slashed with red.
“I…” He cleared his throat. “Just watch the game. And you can cheer for your precious Avs. Don’t hurt yourself going for Toronto.”
He turned away from her and gulped half his beer down in one go.
He could feel Blake’s eyes on him before she turned away, and see her hands shaking out of the corner of his eye.
“Dude,” Owen whispered. “This is going to be fun.”
“Fuck you,” Graham growled and drank the last of his beer.
He didn’t know what had come over him, but that had to be the last of it. There was no way he was going to go there. If he were this unraveled and tense at the same time with just one kiss, with just one look, he wouldn’t make it if he had her in his arms. In his bed.
Blake wasn’t for him, and damn it, he didn’t want her to be.
The Kiss Cam could go straight to hell.

“This is how it’s gonna go down.” He gave his brothers a pointed stare. “I’ll take the lead for now, but I’m going to have Lily start looking for someone to take my place. She’ll have to make the sponsor understand that putting a family member in charge of this event isn’t an option right now.”

Excerpt Rebel let out a heavy sigh and straightened. She’d wondered how long it would take for shit to get real. Maybe there was a hashtag for that she could use. “Go ahead. Just say it.”
He gave her a look that said he had no idea what she was talking about. “Say what?”
She crossed her arms. “Whatever’s on your mind. Whatever makes you feel better, because there isn’t just an elephant in the room. There’s an entire herd of elephants, and judging from the sound of your grinding teeth, they’re about to stampede.” She cocked a hip and waited. Waited for the very thing she’d tried to avoid years ago. His disapproval. His disappointment.
Regret washed through her. Breaking up with him through a note had been cruel. But at the time, it was her only option. If she’d told him the truth about her circumstances, if she’d told him about the horrible secret she was keeping for her dying mother, she was pretty sure he would’ve given up his scholarship and come home to go to community college on the mainland just to be her support system.
That would’ve been the only thing worse than him hating her for leaving him without an explanation.
So it was time to face what she’d done, even if it meant hearing harsh words from the only man she’d ever loved.
Instead, he stewed in silence. She wasn’t sure which was more awful.
His jaw hardened, and his eyes turned icy.Yeah, the silence was much more awful.

Rem moved to her side.

Oh.Her foot tapping stopped.“Let’s focus on the camp,” he said. “That’s all I care about. Then you and I can go back to our lives.”
She swallowed down the sting in her throat.
She thought he’d ask why, want answers, or just plain tell her off.
She’d been terribly wrong.More than answers, more than having his say, what he obviously needed was for them to go their separate ways. Again.
