“L Ü’â get out of here. That’s the second time some strange guy walking by has sneered at me,” Elijah said.

“You’ve got military written all over you. We both know they are not nice to our returning troops,” Elyse said, a shimmer of tears in her eyes.

“Yeah,” Elijah gruffly replied. “Any little piss-ant that spits at me will find himself pounded into a puddle.”

Concern in her eyes, “Elijah. Please. They have no clue what our troops go through.”

Elijah nodded his head. “Lets’ go before Bunker falls asleep.”

“Yes, I need to get to class,” Elyse replied.

“Be careful driving home afterward, brat. It’s a long drive.” “I’m sorry you have to adjust your schedule and drive down here so often,” Elyse said.

“Don’t be silly. This is what we both wanted,” Elijah replied.

Kissing his wife goodbye, Elijah watched the swing of Elyse’s hips as she walked down the sidewalk toward the dance studio a few blocks away. Looking at Bunker. “Let’s go pick up your hot mama’s birthday present, then go get some sheet music.”

A plain young woman named Kim was at the cash register as Elijah went into the bookstore. He asked for his French poetry book on order. She called down an aisle to a co-worker, asking where the copy had been placed. Another youthful- sounding woman called back; it was under the register. Paying for his book, he left and headed up the street to the music store.

Once inside the store, Elijah headed for the sheet music section. Flipping through the composers, not looking for anything in particular. An aroma drifted up, and he looked down at Bunker. “Oh no, not here, buddy.” Pulling back the diaper so he could peek inside. Coughing and gagging, he looked around for the head. He didn’t see it, so he went up front. A hippy worked the register, his shoulder-length long brown hair swinging back and forth as he moved his arms to clear the air.

“Dude, your kid stinks,” the hippy said. “Where’s the head?” Elijah asked.

Confused. “What’s a head?” the hippy asked. “The men’s room,” Elijah growled.

“Oh, go through those double doors in the back, the last door on the left.”

Elijah pushed the stroller into the head. Lifting Bunker out of the stroller, holding the baby up. “Next time, save it for mama. And that’s an order.” The baby gurgled and laughed, flopping his chubby little arms while kicking his feet.

“Just so you know. A full diaper is considered insubordination,” Elijah said, smiling as he looked into his son’s amethyst- colored eyes. Looking at the black curls covering Bunkers head.

“You need a haircut soon. But first, let’s figure out how to clean you up.”

He stripped the baby’s cloth diaper and plastic pants off, throwing them both in the trash.

He miraculously cleaned and diapered the tiny tot, lathering him with diaper cream. Holding the baby up. “I have had hundreds of troops under my command. Crawled through mud and swill, I’ve been waist-deep in a leech-filled swamp and lived through the worst possible conditions. And none of those experiences come in any way close to the mess you just made.” The baby gave him a sweet half-smile, and Elijah’s heart melted as it had a thousand times before. “You have your mama’s guilty as charged smile.”

DAGGER HILL, a young adult scifi thriller, by Devon Taylor

DAGGER HILL by Devon Taylor

5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
A young witch tries to unravel the mystery of who is framing her for dark magic in Georgia Bowers’ creepy YA debut fantasy, Mark of the Wicked.

Magic always leaves its mark.

All her life, Matilda has been told one thing about her magic: You use only when necessary. But Matilda isn’t interested in being a good witch. She wants revenge and popularity, and to live her life free of consequences, free of the scars that dark magic leaves on her face as a reminder of her misdeeds.

When a spell goes awry and the new boy at school catches her in the act, Matilda thinks her secret might be out. But far from being afraid, Oliver already knows about her magic – and he wants to learn more. As Oliver and Matilda grow closer, bizarre things begin to happen: Animals show up with their throats slashed and odd markings carved into their bodies, a young girl dies mysteriously, and everyone blames Matilda. But she isn’t responsible — at least, not that she can remember. As her magic begins to spin out of control, Matilda must decide for herself what makes a good witch, and discover the truth…before anyone else turns up dead.

My Review
I was in the mood for something different, and DAGGER HILL delivered! Set in 1989, before everyone had a smartphone, four friends hang out during their summer before senior year, each dealing with different issues associated with coming of age, when the world as they know it comes crashing down around them in the form of a military plane. Before the plane crashes into Dagger Hill, the kids see someone parachuting out of it. And Gabe sees someone in a gas mask pick up and carry their injured friend, Kimberly, to safety. At least that’s what he thinks. Until the army begins to interview them and they realize something more is going on, and no one knows where Kimberly is. Or the man in the “bug” mask.

Plot
The story is gripping from early on and never lets go. The author uses a fun method for his storytelling — a combination of first person, newspaper articles, third-person, and interviews to bring his tale to life. It makes each chapter different from the last and helps reveal the information to the reader in a unique way. The plot unfolds at a steady pace with lots of twists and turns.

The Characters
The characters are awesome. Each of the main characters, Gabe, Sonya, Charlie, and Kimberly, are complex, with secrets, worries, and problems of their own as they try to hold onto childhood for one more summer. The adults, from Gabe’s police chief dad to Sonya’s scientist dad, to the army officials and doctors, are just as varied and complex as the main characters, making this more than just a plot driven tale.

Top Five Things I Loved About DAGGER HILL
1. Pacing. The story MOVES. But at the right pace. I stayed up late devouring the story but without becoming overwhelmed. It was perfect.

2. Setting. I love both the small town and the era it was set in. It feels modern, but without all the high-tech stuff that can interfere with a good thriller. Plus the music and movie references were a fun blast from the past.

3. Characters. While this is primarily a plot-driven tale, the character development is off-the-charts good and will stay with me for a long time.

4. Twists. So many good twists that left my jaw hanging open.

5. Storytelling. I love the way the author unfolds his tale using different techniques for a unique approach to a really unique story.

Bottom Line
Fabulous, fun, un-put-downable read!

Excerpt
The pool came into view, along with the backside of a woman standing near the edge. She wore a slip of a dress over her toned body. Her auburn hair fell in loose waves to the middle of her back. She appeared to be staring at the water with her arms wrapped around herself.

Beautiful.

Alluring.

His breath caught before he reminded himself Reese was one of his best friends and he’d never do anything to mess that up. His brothers would kick his ass right now if they knew the thoughts running through his head.

He didn’t exactly sneak up behind her—okay, he did—and so when she suddenly turned in surprise and grabbed the front of his T-shirt to keep from losing her balance, he should have been prepared to steady her. Instead, she shrieked in alarm, tugged hard enough on the thin cotton material of his shirt to rip it, and the two of them tumbled into the pool with a splash.

Not his finest moment. Not by a long shot. At least the water was warm.

They surfaced at the same time, his first thought to help her get a hand on the side of the pool since they’d fallen into the deep end. He also readied himself for her wrath, an apology all set on his tongue.

Instead, she gripped the edge of the tile with one hand, swept the hair off her face with the other, and cracked up.

She had a nice laugh.

The kind that had him forgetting apologies and enjoying the moment with her.

“Cam!” she finally said. “What the heck was that?”

For a moment, he was completely distracted by her full lips, almond shaped eyes, flawless skin.

“Surprise,” he offered, hoping he sounded contrite.

She gave him a playful splash. “Duh. And I guess I surprised you, too.”

“Yeah, thanks a lot for driving with me,” he teased. “I didn’t think you were coming up until Founder’s Day weekend.” Reese and her parents were planning a visit to celebrate the centennial milestone.

“Shay has me reading a gazillion scripts and at the last minute suggested I take time out of the office to do it so I’m not distracted.”

“A gazillion, huh?”

She rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean. A ton. So here I am! You know you’re happy to see me.”

He edged closer, an involuntary reaction he didn’t try to fight. “Here you are.” He had a feeling there was more to the story, but he didn’t press. He was tired. Hungry. And truth be told, more than happy to see her.

Synopsis
Gray “Quick Shot” Woodson is the fastest gun west of the Mississippi. Unfortunately, he’s ready to hang up his hat. Sure, being notorious has its perks. But the nomadic lifestyle—and people always tryin’ to kill you—gets old real fast.

Now he just wants to find a place to retire so he can spend his days the way the good Lord intended. Staring at the sunset. And napping.

When his stubborn horse drags him into a hole-in-the-wall town called Desolation, something about the place calls to Gray, and he figures he might actually have a shot at a sleepy retirement.

His optimism lasts about a minute and a half.

Soon he finds himself embroiled in a town vendetta and married to a woman named Mercy. Who, judging by her aggravating personality, doesn’t know the meaning of her own name. In fact, she’s downright impossible.

But dang it if his wife isn’t irresistible. If only she’d stop trying to steal his guns to go after the bad guys herself.

There goes his peace and quiet…

 ————————————————————————————–

Excerpt
Jason, who had been watching them, his head swiveling back and forth like an inebriated owl, just smiled and crammed more biscuit into his mouth.

“Where are your guns?” he asked, motioning to Gray’s empty holsters.

He’d stashed the guns again once they’d returned home, to keep them all safe from Mercy, though he’d kept the holsters on. More out of habit than anything. It was bad enough not having the weight of the guns against his hips. The holsters were going to stay where they were for the time being.

Mercy snickered. “They’re stashed in the flour drawer.”

“Dammit,” Gray said, shoving himself out of his chair to go retrieve them. Now he’d have to find a new hiding spot. Not that the flour drawer had been ideal, seeing as how she dipped into it often. He held them up and grimaced. Not to mention the fact that they were now coated with flour and would have to be cleaned.

When he returned, Mercy was explaining why he kept hiding his guns.

“So, you won’t teach her either?” Jason asked. “At least now I know it’s not something personal against me.”

Gray scowled. “No, it’s very personal against you.”

Jason waved him off and took another gulp of his apple cider.

Gray slumped into his chair and watched him. “Why do you want to be a gunfighter, anyway? It’s not some noble profession.”

“That depends on your definition of noble,” Jason said.

“Your mother sure as hell won’t be proud of you for it.”

Jason shrugged. “My mother died when I was ten, and frankly, she’d just be happy to see me safe and making a decent living.”

“You have an interesting understanding of the words safe and decent.” Gray’s eyes narrowed. Sunshine was certainly a stubborn bastard. “You got lawmen constantly on your tail.”

Jason shook his head. “You’ve used that one before, but I’ve been following you for weeks and I haven’t seen one lawman after you. And you certainly don’t seem overly concerned about running into one. Especially considering your current arrangement,” he said with a wink at Mercy.

Gray shrugged. “That’s because I never start the fight. You never start the fight, it’s self-defense. Not my fault, so there’s nothing to charge.”

“Interesting,” said Jason. “See, I’m learning so much from you already. Imagine what I could learn if you were actually trying to teach me something. Don’t start the fight. Got it.”

“No, that’s not… You can’t just…”

Jason and Mercy both watched him with quizzical expressions, and he threw his hands up.

“You two… You just…” He growled in frustration, jumping up so fast his chair squeaked against the wooden floor, and marched out the door. He needed a break.

Synopsis
Millie Leclair is a mess, complete with a dead-end career and a flat-lining love life. So when she inherits her great aunt’s oceanfront B&B in a resort town in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, she doesn’t hesitate to pack up her car and set off on a new adventure. It’ll be fun.

Of course, life seldom goes according to plan. The B&B is barely habitable for one person, let alone ready to open for business. With dwindling funds, Millie has no choice but to roll up her sleeves and tackle the repairs by herself. Yeah, so much fun.

Ex-pro golfer Braxton Channing thought being a full-time single parent kept him on his toes. That was before he spotted his new neighbor teetering on her rooftop—which is only the beginning of her long list of renovations for the old house—and he added keeping her safe to his to-do list.

But Millie is determined to dive headfirst into repairs regardless of the risk, and suddenly, battling with his daughter over brushing her teeth seems easier than winning an argument with Millie. She’s exasperating. And oddly delightful. And most definitely shouldn’t be let anywhere near a tall ladder.

For a guy who’s sworn off romantic relationships, why does he suddenly want to be the one who gets the privilege of watching Millie conquer not just the B&B but his heart as well?

 —————————————————————————-

Excerpt
He pushed away from the table and headed toward the snack table. But halfway there, his new neighbor, Millie Leclair, appeared in front of him with her hands on her hips and her lips pressed together in a grim line.

“Why do you hate my aunt’s legacy?”

Braxton frowned. “I have nothing against Mildred’s legacy. I thought she was a lovely woman.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Then why are you trying to buy up her land and block her hotel?”

It’d been a hard day and all Braxton wanted was a bottle of water, to finish his work, and get home to put Alice to bed. He let out a sigh and reached around her until he could snag one of the bottles on the edge of the table. Still, he admired her tenacity.

“I’m not trying to block you.” He twisted off the top and raised an eye brow. “Plus, I thought you said you wanted it to be more of a bed and breakfast.” He took a long pull from his drink, keeping his gaze on her.

She blinked in rapid succession. While he’d managed to catch every word she’d said on their first meeting, he somehow missed how pretty her eyes were. They were the color of rich caramel and they simultaneously calmed and ignited something within him.

“It’s… well… yeah. So you were listening.”

Braxton nodded. “Of course I was listening. My job, however, is to make sure everything that happens in the neighborhood is in everyone’s best interest.”

She propped her hand on her hip again, regaining her footing and igniting the passion for her project in her beautiful eyes. “And you don’t think my great-aunt’s legacy, my livelihood, is what’s best for the community?”

He took another swig of his water, trying to turn is attention to anything other than the way her eyes sparked when she spoke. Or how they were causing a flurry somewhere deep in his chest.

“I didn’t say that, but there are a lot of things at play here. The bylaws were written to protect our residents, our neighborhoods and our beaches.” It might be an unpopular opinion, but he happened to like rules. They protected things that needed to be protected. They kept people safe.

“What exactly do you think I’ll be doing at the B-and-B? Holding midnight raves and dumping my trash on the beach?”

“I wouldn’t think so, but one should never assume.” He leaned in as if sharing a secret. “By the way, if you’re planning on the rave, you should make it an early evening thing. There’s also a noise ordinance that goes into effect at eleven.” He gave her his best ‘what-do-you-do?’ look and shrugged.

She rolled her eyes and the flurry in his chest upgraded to a fluster, which he immediately stomped down. He didn’t have time for that, no matter how much he admired her gusto.

Synopsis
Soon to be a motion picture.

From the screenwriter of Rescuing Madison and
A Lesson in Romance on Hallmark

“[A] charming romance. Miller and Brody do a masterful job of pacing and plotting, while creating a hero and heroine readers will easily relate to. This sweet, G-rated contemporary should draw in Hallmark Channel devotees in droves.” ~Publishers Weekly

After a tough week that includes losing a big job opportunity and being dumped by her long-term boyfriend, Jenna Burke receives word that her beloved Aunt May passed away.

Traveling back to her Hawaiian hometown for the reading of the will, Jenna discovers she and her sister have inherited May’s dilapidated Victorian home on desirable beachfront land. The sisters can do whatever they want with the property, but there’s one catch: the house must be renovated before it can be sold, and Jenna has to oversee the work. Their Aunt even stipulated the contractor for the job—Ben Fletcher—who has a gift for making things beautiful again. He also has another skill: driving Jenna crazy.

Jenna vows to sell the property the moment the job is done. But as Aunt May’s broken old house starts to feel like home again, Jenna is torn between the life she’s been chasing in the city, and the one she’d left behind.

 ————————————————————————————–

Excerpt #2
He sounded impressed, but Jenna’s smile turned wistful as her thoughts wandered to Terrace Pines. “But I guess sometimes having your happiness depend on others’ happiness is a risky proposition, right?”

“Maybe,” Ben agreed. ‘But isn’t that what it’s all about?”

“What what’s all about?”

His eyes found hers, and again they hung on too long. This time, however, Ben didn’t look away. “Love.”

Jenna felt as if she were being tugged down, like the specks in Ben’s gaze were magnets drawing her into him. She forgot about losing her pitch, or about all the reasons she’d left the island. Reasons she hadn’t come back. Or whatever it was it was they had been talking about. All she thought about now was another dimple in his jaw she’d somehow missed before. Another shade of blue hiding in his eyes.

“Uh. I wasn’t talking about love,” she managed.

“Sure you were,” Ben said. “My question was what do you love best about being an architect. And you told me. In life, in work, with people, love should be at the heart of everything we’re about.” He held her gaze for a heartbeat longer and then blinked, breaking the spell. Clearing his throat, Ben propelled himself back up to a sitting position and Jenna turned her attention elsewhere, anywhere that wasn’t warm and deep and inviting—or specked with gold.

“We should get back to banging nails,” he said, his voice uncharacteristically brusque.

A dreamy feeling had collected in the back of her throat, and Jenna swallowed it back. She was here to renovate Aunt May’s house, not swap googly eyes with the ruggedly handsome contractor slash romantic literature bard.

“Back to work,” she agreed.

MARK OF THE WICKED, a standalone young adult fantasy, by Georgia Bowers

MARK OF THE WICKED by Georgia Bowers

My Review
I had no idea what I was getting into with this book, but I’m so glad I requested a review copy! MARK OF THE WICKED is enthralling, impossible to put down, and filled with the types of characters that are so complex, you don’t know whether to love them or hate them. I started off not much liking Matilda. She uses her magic to harm those she considers her enemies. The only problem is, if she harms someone with magic, she is scarred for life; their name carved into her face. But Matilda has learned how to hide her scars from everyone, so at the outset, it seems like she suffers no consequences for her actions. She’s angry, spiteful, and nearly impossible to sympathize with. At first.

When she meets Oliver, though, we get to see a side to Matilda that was missing — the reasons for the things she does. She reveals her deeper fears and her darker pain that she resorts to magic to help her cope, the way an alcoholic turns to booze to numb the pain. But there is something more sinister than Matilda afoot, with grisly animal deaths that somehow keep pointing to Matilda. But with her mother acting suspicious, her grandmother not having spoken in three years, and Matilda’s blackouts, anything is possible.

Plot
MARK OF THE WICKED is superbly plotted, with intertwining plots. Debut author, Georgia Bowers, creates intrigue with her storytelling. The pacing is perfection. Set in a small town in England, with a dark history, similar to that of Salem, Massachusetts in the states, her backdrop comes alive, becoming a part of the story as much as the characters.

The Characters
Speaking of characters, for me anyway, the ability to create an antihero like Matilda, and make us root for her the way we rooted for Walter White in the first few season of Breaking Bad, is a rare talent and Bowers does it masterfully. Supporting characters, like Matilda’s classmates, Erin, Oliver, her mother, and grandmother, are more than just cardboard cutouts and stereotypes. It would have been easy for the author to make someone like Ashley a less than sympathetic character, but even she has more depth than just the class queen bee.

Top Five Things I Loved About MARK OF THE WICKED
1. Magic. The magical world building is amazing and really adds to the plot and character development.

2. Characters. Their depth and complexity made this a book I couldn’t put down.

3. Plot. The story is unforgettable, with a number of twists and turns that made this a book I couldn’t put down.

4. Redemption. Matilda’s character arc is the opposite of Breaking Bad as she learns some brutal, valuable lessons about life, love, and what it means to be a good citizen.

5. Storytelling. The author does an amazing job of weaving in threads that stick with you, gnawing in your brain, that keeps you reading to find out what they mean.

Bottom Line
A stellar debut novel by an author I cannot wait to read more from.

Author Georgia Bowers

About the Author
Georgia Bowers lives in Bedford, a small market town in England. When it was time to decide what to do with her life, she was obsessed with two things: books and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seemed sensible to follow in the brogued footsteps of Rupert Giles, so she became a librarian, though sadly not the demon fighting kind. But there’s still time.

Ever since her mum told her that witches used to meet in the woods near their village, she’s been obsessed with witchcraft and the paranormal. When she was a teenager, a weekly habit of Point Horrors satisfied her thirst for chilling tales before she moved on to reading Stephen King. These days she likes to give her nerves a break every now and then with a good YA romance.

After completing a course in writing YA fiction she was a winner in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Undiscovered Voices. Since then she has dabbled with stories of chosen ones and ghostly best friends until she conjured up the magical ingredients for her debut novel, Mark Of The Wicked.

Synopsis
There are no safe spaces…

When Tess Porter agrees to pick up her boyfriend’s college pal at the airport on a snowy December night, she has no idea she’s about to embark on the most dangerous ride of her life.

Two days later, the 17-year-old wakes up in a hospital with broken bones, and unable to remember how she got there.

Her parents are acting strangely, and neither James, her boyfriend, nor her best friend Izzy has visited.

As she struggles to physically recover, Tess wrestles with haunting questions: What happened? Will her memory ever return? and what if she’s better off not recalling any of it?

Excerpt #4:
I stare at the phone again. It’s after six o’clock. More than two hours have passed since James asked me to get Nick.

“He’ll be waiting.” I hear James’ voice in my head. What if he didn’t? What if he ran into someone he knew or bummed a ride from a stranger? The airport’s only exciting when you’re heading off on a trip. When you’re standing around waiting to go home, it sucks. I’m no world traveler, but even I know that.

A blast of heat smacks my face as I walk through the automatic doors. I look at the monitors. If someone gave me a dime for every time the word “canceled” appears beside a flight, I could buy a private jet.

Stranded holiday travelers sleep on the floor using their suitcases for pillows. Families eat dinner slumped against garbage cans. Two men scream over who’s been waiting longer for an outlet to charge their phones. The stale air smells like French fries and feet. It’s chaos, and though I don’t want to drive again anytime soon, I’m jumpy to get out of here as fast as possible.

Circling the baggage carousels like a shark, I’m bursting with adrenaline after that hell ride. My shirt, damp with sweat, sticks to my skin. I feel chilled beneath Mom’s coat. I’m wondering how I’ll ever find Nick Lawrence in this sea of people when a guy walks up to me. At first, I think he’s going to ask me for money or a ride, but then I take a closer look. Dark hair, dark eyes, empty-looking duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He’s wearing a lightweight hoodie over a t-shirt. The neck is stretched out and wavy. He looks sloppy, not like a guy who attends a top university, but maybe he’s shot from finals too. His eyes, vaguely familiar, meet mine. He holds out a thick, clammy hand.

When our palms touch, an electric shock passes between us. He holds my hand a beat too long and smiles, a weird, goofy grin. I have the sudden urge to pull away, turn around, leave him standing there. He doesn’t look like the kind of guy James would befriend, but James always reminds me: Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Excerpt #2
I hate my husband.

Mark was a hard-working, successful intellectual-property attorney and a good father to our three-year-old son, Ethan. But every time he opened his mouth, I cringed.

I watched him push Ethan on the swing as I sat on a bench a few yards away. Every time he pulled the swing back, he would say in a high pitch, “Up, up, up.” And when he let go, he would say in a low baritone, “Down, down, downnntown.”

I surveyed my surroundings. All I had access to at the moment was a large, heavy stroller piled high with a bag of supplies, most of which were never used, like the first aid kit, emergency change of clothes, emergency change of underwear, and boxes of juice.

Can I stab myself in the neck with a juice straw? Will it kill me? Will it end this misery?

I assumed I felt that way because I was wasn’t grateful enough. I had only myself to blame. I had to get better at gratitude. My friend Veronica Buccino Blackman was always rattling off all the things she was grateful for, and I could only ever come up with “I’m grateful for chocolate.” Dark. At least 70 percent cacao. The higher, the better. And I was grateful for quiet people on the train. People who talked on their cell phones on the train—or worse, people who tried to make conversation on the train—were the worst people in the world. Quiet people were so underappreciated.

The sun was directly overhead, pulsing hot rays through my skull. I scanned the park for another bench in the shade, but the one to my left was occupied by the mom of twin girls around Ethan’s age and their schnauzer, Popcorn. Popcorn was a park regular. He was cute but a notorious toe licker. Disgusting. My sandaled toes curled in repulsion. The bench to my right was empty, but it didn’t provide all that much shade. Still, I reached for Ethan’s stroller, and as I struggled to move it, his Buddy the Bulldozer remote control fell. Ugh. We were already on our third replacement. Luckily, Ethan didn’t see that as he was going “downnnntown.” I recoiled.

As I pushed the stroller toward the other bench, still in sight line with Mark’s broad shoulders pulling back the swing, he called for me. “Hey, Jada. Jay. Jay!”

I shielded my eyes from the sun. “What?”

“Can you bring over a juice?”

I stepped down on the stroller brake, popped a straw in a juice box, and walked over to the swings.

Ethan took one sip and declared, “No. I want applesauce.”

I walked back to the stroller, retrieved an applesauce, twisted off the cap, and walked back over to the swings.

Ethan took one mouthful and declared, “No. I want to get pushed.”

So I went back to my bench, but not before I got them to smile for a picture. I posted it with the caption, “Another perfect day in the park with my boys!” and a heart emoji. I plopped down on the bench and wondered what wrong turn I’d taken in life to get to this point.

Is this it? Is this happiness? Sitting in a park on a Saturday in the summer, watching kids drip their snot all over the slides and monkey bars? Serving up juice and applesauce? Hating your husband?

“Popcorn!” The frantic scream came from behind me. Popcorn ran as fast as he could right toward me. I wondered what he was gunning so hard for all of a sudden. The nearly full juicebox? Then he ran right past me. The exit?

I stood, stretching my neck toward the wrought iron gates of the park so my eyes could follow Popcorn’s path. Run, Popcorn! Run! I found myself cheering inside. Go, Popcorn! Go! Freedom awaits!

Synopsis
Fleeing a flaming dumpster fire of a life in Chicago, ALINA FERROUS moves to Los Angeles to accept a half-assed job offer from the diabolical director of the struggling TV show, Southern Gods. Her official title on the show is assistant producer, but she’s also the director’s widely proclaimed muse. A sexist designation, if ever one existed. It’s been a hard slog, but she finally feels like she’s on track to achieving her filmmaking dream—until she catches the eye of a certain, well-known guest star.

While Alina is holding on tightly to her hard-won career, MARKUS SHELLENBERG is in total free fall. After losing a bet with the director of the show, he is forced to take on a small role in Southern Gods. Functional most days, but sinking fast, Markus struggles to overcome creative exhaustion and anxiety exacerbated by his grueling schedule and the painful demise of an eight year relationship. Almost immediately upon arriving on set, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Alina that shocks him with its relative ease and candor.

Unfortunately, Alina and Markus’s friendship and impossible-to-hide chemistry doesn’t go unnoticed by the show’s director. In a last ditch effort to save the show, he casts them in leading roles as love interests for the next season. As Markus and Alina prepare to take on new roles, their friendship evolves into something more and the line between reality and the show begins to blur. Before long, a tip from a gossipy co-worker prematurely outs them to the media and they’re forced to take their tentative relationship into the glaring, public spotlight.

Markus and Alina play along at first, but the stress of celeb life and being the saviors of the show ratchets up and it becomes heartbreakingly obvious how little they know and trust each other away from the isolated set. When a popular tabloid releases a vicious article depicting Alina as a gold-digging homewrecker, the hastily-built foundation of their relationship disintegrates completely beneath the weight of the narrative’s lies and accusations.

With the help of friends and Markus’s irrepressible youngest brother, Alina and Markus set out to reclaim their narrative from the gossip hounds. Together, the two are able to sift through the wreckage of their previous relationship and rebuild on a foundation of honesty and trust rather than raw chemistry and need.

Excerpt #1:
Like every set, this one was chaotic, with people running around, the acrid smell of burnt coffee polluting the air and the sounds of a million egos vying for attention. I scanned the crowd, searching in vain for the tiny figure of Michael, but he was invisible among the comparative giants striding around purposefully. No one paid attention to me as I ghosted through the set, hat and sunglasses on, hands in pockets, searching for the swirl of energy and noise that I knew would contain Michael at its center.

I wasn’t really focusing on anything when a figure in my peripheral vision stopped me dead. That wasn’t right, though. It wasn’t really seeing—more of a visceral experience. Like I’d taken a punch to the jaw, my head literally jerked in that direction. It was a compulsion. And when I obeyed it, I saw her.

The entire set seemed to go low-res and fade to the back while she glowed, standing out from the foreground in sharp contrast. She was bright, detailed—down to the tiny freckles on her nose and cheeks, which I shouldn’t have been able to see from so far away. Except I somehow could. Dark-brown hair was pinned on the top of her head in a messy knot, the line of her slender neck bisected by the mic arm of a headset. Her green eyes flashed out from under thick, choppy bangs as she smiled at someone while tucking a wayward curl behind an ear.

She was tall, a few inches under six feet, with the lithe build of a former athlete. Her mischievous grin immediately conjured an image of her naked and laughing on the rumpled sheets of my hotel bed. I shook my head, trying to remember the last time I’d had an even remotely sexual thought—definitely before Cambodia, probably even months before that given the emotional minefield that had been my previous relationship.

They’re on the road with the tour that will make or break Spider’s career — and his heart.

 ————————————————————————————–

Excerpt:
A part of me always thought Maria wouldn’t want me because of my history. I know I shouldn’t make a move on her because Alex would kill me. But my whole body is on fire. It feels like it’s being chewed by a thousand fucking bulldog ants, stinging and biting everywhere inside and out.

Putting together that she likes her men with an edge? That’s the peg turn before my already frayed guitar string breaks.

“I..uh…guess I’ll cook,” Maria says.

“More bread?” I ask. I turn and crowd up into her space. “You seemed to really like those kneading lessons yesterday.”

Maria blushes. I touch her cheek, and she blushes harder. She turns and runs for the bathroom and locks herself in there. I decide I’m done playing. Yes, there are a million reasons I should stay away from her. Yes, if she shoots me down and I have to live with her three feet away from me for a few more days while I protect her, it will be awkward, but I don’t care.

I’m tired of waiting.

Yet I do wait, through one extended play, then two, as I go over song possibilities for my solos and time stretches out. There’s no noise coming from the back. No shower or other running water, no music playing, nothing.

I watch like a hawk, patient. She can stay in there as long as she likes. She can’t stay in there all day.

When she comes out, I stalk her in three long strides. She plasters herself to the wall next to the bathroom door, and I cage her in.

“Spider, what are you do—”

I put my finger over her lips. The motion sends an electrical spark up and down my body, like a live wire struck by lightning.

“Why is it no man has claimed you?”

“Huh?”

“Marked you,” I say, nuzzling her neck, letting my teeth graze the tender skin there. “Like I want to do.”

I pull back and her gaze is full of desire, glazed over with it, but it’s also confused.

“You don’t think I want you?”

I remove one hand from the wall by the side of her head, planning on taking her palm and placing it on my cock to show her exactly how much I want her, but instead I end up stroking her collarbones, down the center of her chest, and up again, spreading my hand until I’ve got it wrapped around the front of her neck.

Maria gasps and lifts her breasts up. She licks her bottom lip and her eyelids go hooded. I squeeze my hand slightly, not enough to hurt her or cut off her air, just enough to let her know I’m serious about possessing her. Her hips thrust out toward me and she lifts her ribs higher.

“You want more of that, Miel?” I whisper in her ear.

I keep my right hand wrapped around her neck. I stroke down the side of her body with my other hand, taking time caressing the outside of the curve of her breast.

She whimpers at my touch but then says, “What’s miel?”

I pull back to look at her. “You don’t speak Spanish?”

“Not a word.”

“How can you grow up Mexican in L.A. and not speak Spanish?”

“Well, we didn’t stay in L.A., and my parents never spoke Spanish at home or let us learn it because they wanted us to, you know, totally assimilate.”

I nod. “Better than me, maybe. I didn’t hear any English until I went to school.”

“That’s why you have an accent sometimes.”

I grimace. I hate that.

I rub my thumb over her bottom lip to redirect and it does the trick. She moans. Exactly like she was doing this morning.

“You moan like that when you dream of me, Miel.”

“What does M— what? I don’t dream of you.”

I press my body to hers, let her feel my erection. “You dream of this? How hard I get when I dream of you? Because I dream of you. Every night. Every morning.” Yes, lately it’s been nightmares, but still it’s Maria all the time on the channel of my mind. “Kissing you. Licking you.”

I flex my hand around her neck and she moans.

“Making you moan just like that. Right before you beg. Will you beg for me?”

Maria shakes her head. I press my erection harder into her and she moans again. “Oh, I think you will.”

Synopsis
I had stars in my eyes and I couldn’t see around them…

The year is 1995 and my parents have finally allowed me to take the summer to tour in a VW van across the country with my boyfriend Evan and our band. Yes, my dream to be a singer became reality. Even with Clarissa, Evan’s jealous ex-girlfriend, as the lead singer, it’s my presence on stage that led us to a major record deal. There are moments you’ll always remember in life, but I can’t imagine anything more cool than hearing your song on the radio for the first time.

But being a Rockstar isn’t as easy as it sounds. Using alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms, nothing but tension surrounded me, hurting my still blossoming relationship, and continued grieving over my sister’s death.

A love letter to the nineties and a journey of a girl becoming a woman, Grenade Bouquets charts the rollercoaster ride of a band primed to explode on the scene, as long as they keep from actually exploding.

“An engaging ’90s pastiche with an earnest heart beating at its center.”– Kirkus Reviews on Runaway Train.

I’m barefoot on a roof deck, maybe it’s my own, I dunno. Life has been a series of tour buses and motels recently, but I think this is that place the band rented down on the Lower East Side. Everyone hates me and I’m left alone in a huge railroad apartment with a fire escape that twists up to a roof and barely any railing to keep me safe. I have a joint in one hand that’s surprisingly still lit in the rain and a trusty bottle of Absolut Citron in the other. I’m wearing a baby doll pale blue dress, the one I rocked during the Grenade Bouquets set when the A&R manager said he was gonna make us stars. I once heard that when you’re looking at stars in the sky, you’re already looking at the past and they’re already dead. I’m seventeen and I can completely relate. I’m over myself and have been looking into the past so much, I might as well be dead.

I chug from the bottle, the excess liquid spilling down my cheeks like hot tears. What lands in my throat, burns and my eye twitches…I’m so bombed. My makeup has run all over my face and made me into a clown. I pity whoever will find my ghastly remains. I bring the joint to my lips and suck as the cherry flares, the smoke streaming through my nostrils. I’m a dragon in pursuit. Three stories down below, a sea of umbrellas await. I think of Kristen.

Her spirit no longer visits and I understand. She has better things to do than deal with the living. My sister has been gone now for over a year, and sometimes I forget the sound of her voice. I wake up in the middle of the night frantic that I’ve lost it, and then a glimmer reappears—a whisper in her high pitch calling me back to sleep, aware of how my insomnia can plague me. She would be so proud of my success as a singer and for me to live my dream, not realizing that it was killing me as well. I don’t remember the last time I went to bed sober. I feel distant from everyone I used to care about. Evan can’t even look at me anymore. I’m Nico the Beast, a whirlwind intent to destroy.

If you heard me on the radio, you’d be jealous. I’m that girl you wish you could be. My song like a spit in the face, a baby Courtney Love with scabbed knees, dark red lipstick, hair dyed so much it’s fried, a scowl for a smile. And then in the next song, I’m scrubbed clean, my dress full of flowers rather than ripped, my bruises bandaged, my makeup a light touch rather than an onslaught, singing about love and hope and everything that grunge is not. Because grunge is dying. Kurt Cobain solidified its end and the record companies can smell it. A future of sugary happy pop awaits. What will they do with me, with any of us? We’re already that dying star. Might as well help give them a push.

The rain has risen in tempo, a drumbeat on my skull. The joint has gone out and I toss it into the crowd. It disappears into the ether, like I will soon. I picture my obituary, the phrase ‘One Hit Wonder’ highlighted. All I’ll ever be. But I don’t have any more songs in me. My quill is broken, my heart has followed—I’m sick of myself.

AMENDS, the second book in the adult urban fantasy/mystery series, Diana Hawthorne Supernatural Mysteries, by Carissa Andrews

AMENDS (Diana Hawthorne Supernatural Mysteries #2) by Carissa Andrews

4.5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis
For as psychic as she is, shit goes sideways far too often around Diana Hawthorne.

Diana now has everything she ever wanted–her memories, and the soul mate she didn’t realize she was missing. There’s just one problem… the old gods expect her to make amends for her absence. And her work starts now.

But time lost at the oracle isn’t the only thing she has to atone for. Her friend Demetri was stripped of his powers–and it was all her fault. If she could just set things right, she’d feel a whole lot better about moving forward. Unfortunately, Demetri wants nothing to do with her and knows exactly how to keep her out of his head.

To make matters worse, in the age of social media, Diana’s abilities have gone viral. People from all over the world are clambering to get on her books. One case, in particular, hits her radar and despite herself, she can’t shake it. A 14-year-old boy is wrapped up with a deadly governmental agency and he’s scared to death. And he should be–they want to weaponize his power.

Torn between what was and what is, Diana struggles to fully embrace who she’s becoming. Will she be able to help Demitri and make things right? Or will her new role mean leaving the past behind?

Calling fans of KF Breene, Shannon Mayer, and Shayne Silvers! If you like snarky-fun humor, gripping supernatural scenes, and twists that leave you spellbound — then you will LOVE Carissa Andrews’ world built especially for Diana Hawthorne.

My Review
She’s baaaack! Diana Hawthorne from ORACLE returns with a whole new host of problems. If you haven’t read ORACLE yet, be aware there are mild spoilers head for book 1. Our favorite psychic/goddess is back, along with the rest of the cast, with a new mission — fix the problem she created for Demitri, and oh yeah, make amends for her past. Now that Diana finally knows who she is (the big question in book 1), with Blake by her side again, just as annoying and steamy as before, she has her work cut out for her. While Diana attempted to live in the past before, she’s now thrust into the twenty-first century with a vengeance she cannot ignore, which only complicates what she needs to do.

AMENDS picks up right after where the first one ends. This time, Diana will be forced to choose between her two worlds or find a better way to straddle them, all while still carrying a heavy dose of guilt over Demetri’s loss of powers she fully blames herself for.

Plot
As with book 1, AMENDS has an intense plot with solid subplots, including ones that span at least two books and definitely a third. Andrews does a stellar job with plotting, weaving the pieces together brilliantly. She ups the stakes this time, which was hard to do, considering we were dealing with a child sex-trafficking ring in book 1, but she manages to pull it off, generating another unputdownable page-turner.

Characters
Once again, the characters are complex and fun. Bringing in new characters, like the curmudgeonly Kyros, who is the oil to Ren’s water, along with favorites from Greek mythology, including Apollo. The “will they or won’t they” between Diana and Blake is only further intensified, making this even more delicious. Especially since they now both have the added insights of who they each other truly is.

What I Enjoyed About AMENDS
1. Greek Mythology.
I absolutely love this part of the book. The author incorporates the mythology with expertise, that only adds to the story.

2. Diana. She really grew on me over the course of ORACLE, so by the time I started AMENDS, I already loved her. She’s more her than ever, now that she has her memories back.

3. Blake. The man with the perfect ass is less of a mystery, making him much more fascinating.

4. Kyros/Ren. The battle of the assistants is worth the price of admission alone!

5. Psychic Powers. I’ve always been fascinated by this particular trope, and the author does a great job of brining the supernatural to the modern world without making things too easy for Diana and crew.

Bottom Line
Better than the first, AMENDS is a wild page turner with a fantastic cast.

Synopsis
A delightful romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Ginny Baird…

Successful Boston matchmaker and television personality Meredith Galanes’s reputation is on the line. During a guest appearance on a morning talk show, she’s broadsided by questions about her own romantic attachments, just as she’s trying to secure a syndication deal. Afraid to admit her love life is a total disaster, Meredith blurts out that she’s seriously involved with a very special man—a boatbuilder in Maine. She never expects that small slip to get spun into a story about her supposed engagement.

Or that the paparazzi will track the guy down…

Derrick Albright is laid-back about many things. Being hounded by the press about some imaginary engagement to a woman he’s only met once—and couldn’t stand—isn’t one of them. Then Meredith actually shows up at his cabin in Blue Hill, Maine, with an apology, a pot roast, and a proposal—play along until she secures her TV deal, and she’ll help him win back his ex.

It’s a simple plan, but if they have any chance of pulling it off, they’ll have to survive each other first…

“Ah, actually. Romance is not a top priority for me right now. I’ve been—”

“No romance? What?” Tanya laughed like the idea was absurd, then pretended to share a confidence with the camera. “And here she claims to be all about love. An expert. Hmm.”

This interview was going downhill fast. Meredith glanced at the shadowy side of the stage, searching for Joel or April or somebody for support, but there were only producers and even more cameras. She didn’t dare look back at the suits.

“Well, sure I make time for romance! Of course. But, in my case, I appreciate keeping things a little…private.”

“Private?” Tanya challenged, not backing down. “What does that mean?”

Meredith tried not to break a sweat, envisioning cool mountain streams and waterfalls. “All it means is…” She smiled sassily at the camera. “We haven’t yet made things public.”

Finally. That should work in throwing Tanya off, but nope. She persisted.

“So there is a special someone.” She tapped her chin. “What’s his name?”

Meredith bit her lip. She couldn’t—just couldn’t—admit her disastrous dating history. What would the viewing public think? And those network execs? Joel was right—Matched Up would never get that syndication deal then. Tanya would make sure of it with her little humiliation campaign. And she was so close.

Tanya’s face fell. “No. Way. You’re not matched up at all, are you?” She forced a fake frown. “How sad. ‘Matchmaker Meredith’ has no match of her own. I wonder…do you tell your clients that you’re single? I can’t imagine that instills a lot of confidence in your…abilities.”

Low blow. Meredith’s gut tightened. Tanya was known for skewering her guests, especially her accomplished female ones. You’d think a fellow woman would help a girl up. Not knock her down, then step on her. Especially in front of network people. Tanya acted like she was above getting fired, and maybe she was. Even though Talk Time was only local, the show attracted tons of viewers. A few more at the moment than Matched Up. But that was mostly on account of Tanya’s enormous advertising budget. “Sure I do. I have a match, my perfect match.”

“Then give us a hint. Occupation. Location. Anything?” Meredith could practically hear the knell of a countdown clock ticking off the seconds in her brain. Her short segment was nearly up.

Ten. Nine. Eight.

Think, think, think. Meredith worked hard to come up with somebody. Anybody. If he was super impressive that would be amazing. Gorgeous would be a plus, too.

Six. Five.

Shockingly, only one gorgeous guy came to mind. One with piercing blue eyes.

And a smirk. How could she forget that part? Three. Two…

“Well, I guess we have our answer, folks. Thank you for joining us today on—”

“He’s a boatbuilder!” Meredith blurted out.

“Fascinating.” Tanya leaned forward. “Whereabouts?”

“Blue…Blue Hill,” Meredith stammered. Ooh, this is going to come back to bite me. She swallowed hard. “Blue Hill, Maine.”

Chapter 3
Alec

Elle is playing this rather cool. Personally, I love the massive photo of her on my wall. It means I tap her lips every morning as I head to the kitchen. Talk about good luck. But with Elle? She’s totally working her poker face. It’s hard to know right now if the new mega picture is a hit.

“What do you think?” I ask.

“Wow. That’s really big.”

This isn’t a ‘take that thing down now’ reaction, but she’s not exactly jumping for joy, either.

An idea appears. Perhaps I can guess what her hesitance is here. Knox and I share this apartment, but the only person pictured here is Elle.

“Look, I checked with Knox already. He didn’t want to put up a big picture of Bry.” That’s Knox’s girlfriend and Elle’s bestie.

Elle taps her lips. “Oh.”

In other words, the issue here is not the lack of a massive photo of Elle’s friend. That leaves one more option.

“Too much?” I ask.

Not that I’ll take it down. If Elle disapproves, I’ll magically camouflage it with a forest scene when other people are here. I’ve gotten used to seeing her first thing in the morning. No way am I giving that up.

Elle tilts her head, turns to me, and smiles. “It’s perfect.”

Synopsis
From the author who whisked you away on a wild escapade in The Key West Escape Series comes a sexy, adventure-packed spin off. Follow Mitch Thompson and his team of misfits as they find danger, intrigue, and romance on the hunt for the legendary Lost Souls’ Treasure…

Former special ops aviator Griffin Dodge hasn’t been the same since he disobeyed a direct order and totaled a Blackhawk helicopter. After being separated from the military, he recovered from his injuries and took a job on a marine salvage crew based out of Key West. The only person he let himself get close to on the boat was a woman called “Bug” Martin, a waifish tomboy with a mean streak. They couldn’t have been more different – a former all-star golden boy from the mid-west and a French circus performer turned salvage diver – but they became best friends up until the day Griff’s high school sweetheart decided she wanted him back.

A year later, Bug still resents Griff for running off to Missouri and ghosting her and the crew. When her boss calls Griff into town for a favor, Bug wants to hit something. She settles on sucker-punching the selfish a-hole himself when he walks through the door. It doesn’t matter that he’s single again or that he’s sorry, she hates that she’s stuck flying shotgun to Martinique beside the guy who used to claim “quitting wasn’t in his vocabulary” before he abandoned their friendship and betrayed her trust.

The trip was supposed to take two days tops. Just enough time to retrieve the missing pages of a diary that could help lead the crew to The Lost Souls’ Treasure, but nothing is ever easy in Bug’s world. When the deal with the artifact collector goes south, Bug and Griff are forced to flee up the side of a volcano where the lava isn’t the only thing about to bubble over. The tension between them erupts into an unexpected night of passion that leaves them both questioning what comes next.

Griff starts to wonder if settling down in the suburbs still fits the man he’s become, while Bug isn’t sure if she’s willing to open her guarded-heart to the only man who’s ever broke it.

When a rival treasure hunter hellbent on finding the treasure first nabs Bug and another crew member, Griff realizes the future won’t matter, if he can’t bring his best friend home alive.

Playlist
Piece of Eight (The Lost Souls’ Treasure Series Book One) is the first book my new contemporary romantic adventure series. I like to describe my books as sexy, funny, romantic action/adventure movies in print form, so I had a lot of fun creating a soundtrack for my novel.

1. Castaway by The Zac Brown Band – This song sets the tone of this book and the series. The opening lyrics capture what I want my readers to experience when they read one of my books… You’re “gonna have some fun tonight.” If you “wanna be a castaway and leave the world behind. Take a tropic holiday, say goodbye to keeping time…” then escape inside one of my adventures.

2. Waste of Lime by Ingrid Andreas – At its core, Pieces of Eight is a story about unrequited love. Griff and Bug (yes, that’s the heroine’s name) worked together on a marine salvage team out of Key West and were best friends up until the day Griff bailed on Bug to get back together with his ex. Bug, who had a secret crush on him, was heartbroken and angry. A year later, Griff returns, single again, but Bug still hasn’t forgiven him.

3. Desperado by Eagles – Griff’s theme song. Deep down, the sexy ex-Navy SEAL is lost and living with a lot of regrets.

4. Creep by Kina Grannis – Bug’s theme song. The former Circus performer turned salvage diver is a little different. She’s definitely not your typical heroine, but that makes her such an interesting character in my opinion.

5. Complicated by Carolyn Dawn Johnson – She hates him. She loves him. He still loves someone else. It’s complicated.

6. Kokomo by The Beach Boys – Tropical music interlude as our hero and heroine hop a flight to the Caribbean.

7. I Want You to Want Me by Letters to Cleo – What would you do if the man you were madly in love with—who also happened to be your best friend—came back into your life for just a few days? Would you take a shot and risk your friendship, or say nothing and pine for him after he was gone?

8. Somewhere on a Beach by Dierks Bentley – What if he kissed you and things went further than you ever expected?

9. Falling in Love (with my Best Friend) by Matt White – What if he started to have feelings for you?

10. Life is Better with You by Michael Franti & Spearhead – What if, just when he admitted how much he needed you, his ex called? (No spoilers from here on out.)

11. “The Man”- by Taylor Swift – I included this song because it’s an important secondary character’s cell phone ringtone. The song says a lot about this career-driven character who will make another appearance later in the series.

12. Shake Senora (feat. T-Pain and Sean Paul) by Pitbull, T-Pain, Sean Paul – Every adventure has a big, climatic action sequence. Insert this fun song here, and play it loud so you can hear it over the explosions.

13. If It Kills Me by Jason Mraz – *sigh*

14. You Are My Home by Man of Leisure – Double *sigh*

15. Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat – Roll the end credits. 😉

The best word for Jasmine Renard’s past year is a four-letter word. After years of concerts and increasing recognition, a rogue group of vampire hunters forced her into hiding. When the offer of a lifetime to perform again comes from the arrogant vampire she’s dreamed of shoving off a cliff, Jasmine might have to reconsider everything. Including, Luca Martens.

Luca has waited long enough to be onstage with Jasmine again. Their electrifying musical chemistry damn near blew his mind the last time they performed. To the point he mishandled what happened backstage after their last concert. He’d do anything to feel the spark again while playing, the one only she can ignite. But she hates him.

Excerpt #1
On her knees, she raked sheet music back into the binder.

“Jasmine? That you down there? You okay?” He knelt and collected a few stray pages.

Her gut tightened as air caught in her lungs.

Distressed jeans, black T-shirt, large silver ring, tattooed forearms, bleached locks, and blazing confidence. And his Romani accent, a carryover from his family’s Eastern European lineage. Yep, the headliner, himself.

Luca.

Her mind slide-showed recent photos of Luca shirtless with low hanging jeans, which had been featured in a popular music magazine. She might’ve purchased it just to read his interview, not that she’d admit that to him even if tortured. The photos showed off his hard work ethic. Vampire or no, even they had to work out to get abs like that. She’d wondered if the muscles were photoshopped, but his T-shirt tonight didn’t hide much. Those abs were real.

She took the music from him and muttered, “Thanks. Should’ve been looking where I was going.”

He towered over her by almost a foot when they both stood. The potent smell of him powered straight up her nose. Oh my. He smelled of something clean and fresh, and his blood. Oh, God, his blood. An almost dizzy compulsion to taste him flashed in her brain. This wasn’t new when near him. Her infatuation with his blood meant nothing—or so she told herself. It was biology. Her body recognized it’d taste good. But she wouldn’t question why she was driven to a taste Luca and not his brother, who she’d almost been forced to mate.

Eyes off his neck. Not desperate. Not doing blood hunger insanity, especially not with him. He hated her, a feeling that kicked off after the last time they performed, the one and only time three years ago. Back when he’d been on the cusp of stardom.

As much as the intensity between them on stage during their one concert had been inspiring, the kiss afterward in his dressing room never should’ve happened. Some say a girl’s first real kiss should be something special and romantic. Hers had been seduced out of her by Luca’s extraordinary talent. Even though she hadn’t been an innocent kid back then, vampires would argue thirty-five qualified her as a juvenile. Afterward, he’d pushed away from her with a disgusted curse and hadn’t spoken much to her again, not even eighteen months later throughout the fiasco of her parent-arranged forced engagement to his brother, Marcel, and their socially unacceptable breakup. The kiss had happened long before and had nothing to do with her and Marcel not going through with vows.

She needed to perform tonight with Luca, to be seen on stage with him, in order to redeem her family’s honor in vampire society. To show he, a member of the revered Martens bloodline, accepted her.

The left side of his lips twitched into a smirk. His eyelids drooped as he glanced down at her dark gown. Judgy. Do not fuss with the dress. It was professional, long, black, and perfect for a piano performance.

She swallowed the “What?” she wanted to snarl. She could handle this. She wouldn’t be a bitch even though everything about him put her on edge.

Rolling back her shoulders, which she hadn’t realized were so tight, she glared at him. “The two of us playing together is an awful idea.” Even if it might help my career.

He frowned. “Were the pieces too difficult to learn on short notice? Tell me now, and I’ll make sure the conductor knows you’re not going on.”

She recoiled as if he’d slapped her in face. Too difficult? “Of course, I learned them. They’re easy. I’m talking about you and me. Together. On a stage.” She waited, but he didn’t reply. “Remember what happened last time?”

“I thought we ended pretty well.” He turned to head toward the room marked with his name.

He. Did. Not.

Pretty well? What the ever-loving hell? He couldn’t be implying the kiss. Not by the way he’d rejected her afterward. The asshole wasn’t getting the last word on this.

She called out, “Luca.”

He paused with a hand on the doorknob and did a half-turn to face her, wariness in his eyes.

She stalked up to him and leaned in close. She reached between them to pull the zipper up on his open fly.

His cheeks flushed.

It took everything in her not to burst into laughter. Not so Mr. Last-word now, are you?

His mouth opened and closed. His cheeks had turned a darker shade of red before he mumbled a barely audible, “Thanks.”

He turned and disappeared into his room.

He nearly destroyed her career. So why can’t she stay away from him?

As Dr. Carolina Ramirez’s career is taking off, she gets incredible news. Dr. Hector Medina, the doctor she idolized as a teenager and whose research she used to design her cutting-edge clinical trial, is joining her team. As her boss.

Then it all goes wrong and instead of explaining himself, he skips town, nearly destroying her—and her career—in his wake.

Seven years later, he’s back and opening up old wounds she’d thought long healed. She’s recovered her career, her reputation, and her confidence despite his devastating betrayal. She should hate him. Instead, she finds herself drawn to him once again.

Why can’t she get him out of her head? And why does her body still react to him after so many years apart?

This steamy, slow-burn, medical romance has a wonderful happily ever after and is perfect for fans of Mariana Zapata, Alexis Daria, and TL Swan.

Excerpt #2
I didn’t see him move so much as I sensed him approaching, drawn to him like the pull of a magnet that had always been there between us, binding us together. That hadn’t changed, and alarms started blaring in my brain.

“That was very kind of you, Dr. Ramirez,” he said.

Crossing my arms, I finally turned to him as he walked over to me, his steps a loud echo in the empty auditorium. I liked this position of power, sitting on top of the stage like a queen waiting for her peasants to come up to her from below. I smiled and clung to that image to give me the strength I would need to deal with the person I hated the most in this universe.

“Dr. Medina,” I said. “How . . . nice to see you.”

“Please call me Hector, Carolina,” he said, his voice trying to soothe me like a child. The nerve.

“That’s ‘Dr. Ramirez’ to you, Dr. Medina. Let’s keep this professional.”

He finally stood in front of me, and I reveled in this view from the higher vantage point. He looked up to meet my face from several feet below. Letting out a breath, he handed me the book. I arched an eyebrow.

“I wasn’t kidding,” he said. “I would very much like a dedication.”

“You are kidding.” I scoffed.

“No, Carolina. I’m serious. I’m very proud of you.”

Proud? That gave me pause. Why would the man who nearly ruined my career be proud of me?

Disbelieving, I snatched the book from his hand. I opened the cover to the third page, which had the most blank space for a dedication. I smiled devilishly. I couldn’t resist:

To the Devil himself—

You couldn’t pull me down to hell with you.

Hate always,

Dr. Ramirez

Jumping off the edge of the stage, I landed squarely in front of him and handed him the book. Standing on his level, I hated the height difference. I was tall, but he still had a good three inches on me. He encroached on my space too much with his height. I damned him for looking more handsome than ever. In the seven years since I’d seen him, his impossibly good looks had actually improved. His dark-brown, tanned skin glowed even more. What had once been salt and pepper hair was now nearly white at the temples, and his face was a bit rounder. He’d gained weight. The good kind. He was broader at the shoulders than he’d been back then, and I hated myself for noticing he’d clearly been working out. The man was like freaking wine.

He opened the book to read the inscription and laughed.

“That’s funny, huh?” I said.

What in the world was happening? I didn’t understand any of this. Why was he here? Why was he happy, smiling of all things, and proud of me? Nothing made sense, but I would be damned before I’d ask him.

“I will treasure this forever,” he said, clutching the book to his chest. “I see you remain judgmental and critical of me.”

“I see you remain tactless and careless,” I shot back.

He laughed, and I noticed the sparkle in his eye. A sparkle I knew well, but it was so much brighter now.

I slung my purse over my shoulder, ready to get going and forget this crazy day ever happened, but Hector grabbed my wrist as I turned to leave.

“No, Carolina, wait.” I looked at his hand on my wrist at the same time he did, and we both froze. We only connected for two, maybe three seconds, before he withdrew his hand, but those seconds electrified us. Nine years since the first time I’d touched him. Seven since the last time I’d spoken with him. I couldn’t believe my body still reacted to him the same way after all this time.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“It’s okay,” I said, palming my wrist with my other hand to calm the fire on my skin.

“Can I please take you out for a drink, or coffee perhaps?”

I was speechless, so I could only shake my head.

“Please, Carolina. I have so much I have to say to you.”

He said my name in nearly every sentence like he was pleading. I took too long to answer, and he pulled off his glasses to clean them. I knew that tell well. He was thinking. He wanted to find an argument that would persuade me to have drinks with him.

“Even if I wanted to,” I said, “which I don’t, I can’t. I have a flight to catch.”

“How about in Kansas City?” he asked, hopeful.
My entire body stilled. “In Kansas City?”
“Yes. Tomorrow. That little café on Westport Road you liked so much. Wait, is that still open?”
“It-it is, but you’re going to be in Kansas City?”
“Yes. Does five sound okay to you? Tomorrow?” He smiled, and in that moment, he looked like a little kid.
“Why?” I asked, closing my eyes, seeking patience from within. “Why are you going to be in Kansas City? Please don’t tell me you’re coming back.”
