At first, she’s nothing more than a jumble of red linen shirt and a huge cream hat with red roses stumbling toward me.
When I manage to steady her and she looks up into my eyes, it’s my whole world that tilts.
I wish I could stop my heart from beating too fast and my skin from feeling hot.
After a pause, I let my hands slowly fall down and step back. Not far, but enough that I can breathe again.
And like a kaleidoscope coming into focus, I’m struck with that sense of déjà vu, of recognition. Of familiarness.
Have I met her before?
No. I would remember that innocent looking face, the hint of vulnerability in her cinnamon eyes, and that sexy, decadent pink rosebud mouth.
I have a strange feeling, like I can…trust her even though she’s a woman and a stranger.
Obviously, it’s a feeling I can’t trust.

With a great view of the amazing Sicilian coast, the sunset we are treated to has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. If only Fleur wasn’t sitting in front of me.
We enjoyed a nice late lunch of Mediterranean dishes: for starters, fresh spiciness of the tomato bruschetta, then as main dish, a delicious pasta with lobster and clams, paired nicely with one of my best flavorful white wines.
We have been sitting on the patio for more than three hours now and despite the lightness of the conversation and the amount of wine I have imbibed, the strange feeling persists.
Mario introduced me to his friends, who are very easy going and talkative and soon we are all toasting to love with the best spumanti our wineries ever produced.
And soon all glasses are empty and Mario is opening a white wine. “You must taste this. Magma winery produces the best Sicilian wines.”
Mario is not only one of our winery’s best clients since he owns hotels and restaurants here in Sicily and in Calabria, he and Salvatore have been friends since the cradle. When Amalia left me and I fell into a dark depression, Salvatore dragged me here for a whole weekend.
I am still not sure if I was cured from my depression by the amount of wine Mario and Salvatore made me drink or by the amount of beautiful, pink pussies I was introduced to. Because if I am true to myself, I don’t remember a single face of the women I fucked that weekend.
It was then that Salvatore and I learned our passion for sharing women.
“I like this…it’s crispy, not as sweet as the others,” Fleur comments after sipping her wine. She raises her glass against the light and then takes another sip. And to my surprise, she breathes it, as if a connoisseur. “And, Dieu, it’s so…scented.”
“This is an excellent wine,” Jean remarks after tasting his and reaches for the wine bottle. His eyebrows rise as he reads the back label. “It’s produced locally.”
“Don’t be so surprised, mio amico,” Mario says, winking at me and then serving Collette, who accepts her glass with a charming smile. “It’s not only the French who know how to produce a good wine, Jean.”
“Si, our family has been revolutionizing wine production here in Sicily.” I am not boasting, just stating the truth and I am very proud of everything we have worked so hard to achieve. “This white is made with Albanello, a nearly extinct grape found around Vittoria, and Zibibbo. I blend them together and soak the wine in its skins for 10 days.”
“Delicious,” Fleur says and smiles on cue, but I can see she is worried about something by the small crease between her eyebrows and she’s not paying attention to the conversation. Soon I am engaged in a chat with Jean, whose father-in-law is a well-known Bordeaux winery owner, but my mind is whirling on what I am going to do with her tonight.
Si, because make no mistake, she will be mine.
“Mio amico Enzo here is an excellent chef apart from being the best winemaker in Sicily, possibly in all of Italy,” he says, exaggerating as always, but for once I don’t bother correcting him. “Now, signorine, all you have to do is convince him to stay with us tonight.”
“If his cooking is half as good as his wine, I would very much look forward to it,” Fleur says.
“Okay, okay,” I raise my palms in surrender, smiling. “I’m convinced.” Not that I needed much convincing.

Excerpt #2 Reese didn’t waste time and quickly jogged across the side of her yard to reach her porch. She took the steps at a rapid pace, almost missing what was out of place before she lunged over the rotted board.
Only there wasn’t decayed wood where there had been since she’d arrived over a week ago. At least, she didn’t think there was as she stared down at her feet.
Reese unhooked the small key ring she’d clipped to her belt loop on her jean shorts, sliding the key inside the deadbolt. She avoided the area as she leaned forward and slipped her arm inside to flip the light switch.
Instantly, the porch was bathed in a golden hue.
Sure enough, the old board had been replaced with a brand – new plank. All it needed now was a light coat of finish or stain in order to match the others. Chad must have stopped by earlier today, though she was surprised that he hadn’t driven over to Noah’s when the dirt road had basically turned into a parking lot.
She was appreciative that Chad had fixed the porch, but her previous anxiety had settled in her shoulders.
Had he been the one in the woods earlier?
Her gaze was immediately drawn in that direction, though the light from the porch made it hard for her to see so far out in the darkness. That didn’t stop her from dragging her gaze down the edge of the trees. The hairs on the back of her neck tingled.
Someone had been watching her.
Or was it all in her mind?

Excerpt My hands pause on the vine and I shake my head hard, trying to clear her voice from my thoughts. It’s not the first time this has happened to me and a hard shake of my head usually takes care of the problem.
“It’s me, Chloé.”
But not this time. A spark of hope flows through me as I slowly turn my head to her voice.
My dream takes a step forward, her boots crunching on the leaves I have been clearing. Excerpt My hands pause on the vine and I shake my head hard, trying to clear her voice from my thoughts. It’s not the first time this has happened to me and a hard shake of my head usually takes care of the problem.
“It’s me, Chloé.”
But not this time. A spark of hope flows through me as I slowly turn my head to her voice.
My dream takes a step forward, her boots crunching on the leaves I have been clearing. Because I have been tormented that my trip had been in vain and that I would have to wait to go to France and comb Paris to find where her friend lives. “Chloé?” I ask hesitantly, scared I am having a vision.

Excerpt #1 As I look at her face, shielded by her sunglasses, I try to recall how I know her. Taking a deep breath, I nod my head and give my best smile. Excerpt #3 I walk along the rows of bookshelves, running my fingers along the books. My favorite Pablo Neruda is no longer housed here, and I have to wonder if Toby still has it. I stop on a book that is familiar to me, and my hand shakes as I run my hand along the spine. I pull away, my fingers stroking my mouth, and I close my eyes. Biting down hard on my lip, I open my eyes, grab the book from the shelf, and walk over towards the window.
I plop down on the comfy bench chair that I used to hang out on and flip through the pages. I stop when I find what I’m looking for. A memory I placed here, still lays waiting. I pick it out and flip it over.

I suck in a deep breath and remember my first kiss with Toby, reveling in the memory. There is nothing like your first kiss. “Gran I … It’s not my home anymore—”

“Jesus, Gran. Just calm down, please—”

“Why would I have a date for a wedding I’m not going to?” Crossing my arms, I lean against the counter. Mom’s had too many glasses of rosé.
“You’ll be invited. Invitations will be sent out this week.”
“I think I’ll be out of town. Playing rugby.” There’s no way I’m missing one of the last tournaments of the season for some society wedding.
“I thought the season ended mid-September with Rugby Fest?” Aiden’s grin tells me he knows he just threw me under the bus.
“It does. Didn’t Mom say September was the wedding? I’m sure I’m busy every weekend.” I feel the solid ground of my excuse begin to slip out from under my feet.
“It’s Columbus Day. That’s mid October,” she adds like I’m an idiot, which apparently I am because I just blew my out. “And you have to go because I’ve already told Mrs. London you’ll be Mae’s date.”
“What?” I ask, my voice cracking.
“Why?” Aiden sets down his beer with too much force. The glass makes a loud cracking noise against the marble, but doesn’t break.
“Yeah, why?” I echo him. “If I have to attend, I can bring my own choice of dates. I’m not some sad sack who needs his mother to set him up. Not like Aiden. Make Aiden shave off the recluse disguise and take her. If either of us needs help with the opposite sex, it’s him, not me. I’m sure he doesn’t have any other options.”
I can’t believe she thinks this crazy idea is going to fly with me. Anger heats my neck as I try to process why she thinks I’ll go along with her plan.
“Fuck off, Landon,” Aiden mumbles, wiping the bottom of his bottle with his open palm, checking for leaks.
Mom’s lips curve with the start of a small frown. “Can you two be in the same place for more than five minutes without sounding like the dialogue from an R-Rated mob movie?”
“No,” I say, sarcastically.
“It was a rhetorical question, Dumbass.” Aiden stares at the ceiling before mumbling, “I really need to get my own place as soon as possible.”
“You could always move back in here. We have a guest suite on the lower level with its own bathroom.” Mom touches his forearm, hope shining bright in her eyes.
“Thanks, but I can’t move home with my parents. I’m thirty, and while I’m not even in the running for wedding date material, I do have some pride left.” Aiden rests his hand over hers.
“Oh, sweetheart. I assumed you’d be gone before October. Plus, Landon and Mae are friends.” Mom reassures him, her voice all lovey and doting.

Excerpt #3 “All rise!” a woman’s loud voice said. “The court is now in session. The Honorable Judge Malone, presiding.”
Flicka stood, and her lawyers around her did, too.
A sparrow-like woman flitted up to the judge’s seat and scowled at them all. She spoke rapidly in a voice shaking with age. “Court will come to order. First case is Grimaldi versus Hannover. It appears that your prenuptial agreement is in order and very specific. Ms. Friederike Hannover—”
One of Flicka’s lawyers stood. “If it please the court, it’s Her Serene Highness Friederike von Hanno—”
Flicka grabbed his arm and yanked him back into his chair.
Joachim reached behind Flicka and backhanded the guy on his arm.
The grumpy sparrow judge glared at Flicka’s table. “Were you interrupting me to say something?”
“No, ma’am,” Flicka said.
“Good. Quite an entourage you have there, Ms. Hannover.” Judge Malone glanced over at Pierre’s table. “And you have a crowd, too. Oh, great. I was hoping to start the day with a damned goat rope.”
Flicka didn’t know if roping a goat was a good thing or a bad thing, but the lady judge sounded sarcastic when she said it. She should ask Rae about it later.
The judge scowled at the paper she held. The paper rattled in her grasp. “Ms. Hannover is the plaintiff, and I have your affidavit of residency and a dated water bill in your name to back it up. Excellent. Residency requirements have been met.”
One of Pierre’s lawyers rose. “Madam judge, my client, His Serene Highness Prince Pierre Grimaldi is not a resident of Nevada nor the United States, and thus this court does not have the jurisdiction to grant a divorce.”
Judge Malone peered at him over the top of her bench. “Was your client served with a summons and a notification of the divorce within the allotted time frame?”
“Yes, Your Honor, but—”
“No buts. He doesn’t need to be a resident. She is, and she’s the plaintiff. Her residency gives this case jurisdiction.”
“But she’s not a US citizen,” the lawyer argued.
“Doesn’t matter. For the purposes of this court, she’s a resident of the state of Nevada.” She squinted at him. “Have you been admitted to the bar in the state of Nevada?”
“No, Your Honor. But—”
“I said, no buts. Bailiff, escort this person unknown to the court out of the courtroom.”
A uniformed bailiff strode to the lawyer’s side and walked with him out of the courtroom. The heavy door slammed at the back.
Judge Malone asked, “Anybody else want to say the word ‘but?’”
