Synopsis
Lush. Dark. Romantic. Introducing a newly reimagined tale written in the vein of Beauty and the Beast and Hades and Persephone.

Long before civilization, there were the gods. And before the gods, there was the earth, the celestial bodies, and air given flesh. They are the Anemoi—the Four Winds—and they have been banished to the four corners of the world.

Wren of Edgewood is no stranger to suffering. Her parents are gone. Survival is all she knows. For three hundred years, the land known as the Gray has been encased in ice, surrounded by a great barrier called the Shade, which protects the townsfolk from the Deadlands beyond.

But day by day, the Shade weakens.

Only one thing can stop the Shade’s fall: a mortal woman taken captive across the barrier, bound in wedlock to the dark god who reigns over the Deadlands. He is the North Wind, the Frost King, an immortal whose heart is said to be as frigid as the land he rules.

And the time has come for the Frost King to choose his bride.

The North Wind is a standalone, enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance, the first in a series sprinkled with Greek lore. Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Laura Thalassa, and Scarlett St. Clair.

Playlist
While drafting, I mostly listen to epic music or movie soundtracks. It’s very difficult for me to write to a song with lyrics, and instrumental music helps me get into whatever “mood” the book is that I’m working on. As this is a dark fairytale retelling, I searched for pieces that felt a bit eerie, or romantic. Here are some of the pieces I listened to when writing/editing The North Wind.

Für Alina by Arvo Pärt
Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt
Turning Page by Sleeping at Last (instrumental version)
You Complete Me by A.R. Rahman
Experience by Ludovico Einaudi
River Flows in You by Yurima
Jane Eyre soundtrack by Dario Marianelli

Synopsis
What happens when you fall for the one person you can’t have?

Ryan has had seventeen years of being compared to Cody, part of his toxic fractured family, so you’ll forgive him for some epic eye-rolling when it comes to Mr Perfect. Although not related to him by blood, Cody has always been annoying background noise in Ryan’s life. It doesn’t help that Cody’s a high achieving musician, while Ryan’s life ambition doesn’t extend past catching the next wave.

One summer changes everything. It’s the summer when circumstances collide, and Cody and Ryan end up spending time together at Cody’s family’s beach house. It’s the summer Ryan teaches Cody to surf and Cody teaches Ryan to play guitar. It’s the summer when they become friends.

And then more than friends.

But when summer ends, Cody and Ryan are forced back to reality, where they must hide their relationship from their warring family members. And as tragedy strikes and family secrets buried deep in the past worm their way to the surface, their relationship is threatened. Can their feelings, which began in the summer sun, survive the winter ahead?

Excerpt #2
The waves are dumpier today and Cody struggles. He curses as he falls off again.

“I just can’t find the right rhythm,” he complains. His hair is plastered to his skull, water slicking off his wetsuit. He walks a few steps to where I’m waiting for him so we can paddle back out together.

“Sometimes you’ve got to stop analyzing and just feel it,” I say.

“Feel the ocean?” He looks at me like I’ve lost my mind.

Which maybe I have. It’s starting to feel that way, at least when it comes to Cody. But I still stumble on. “Don’t you ever get that in music? Like, when you get to the point where you stop thinking about technique and worrying about being perfect and just go with your feelings?”

“Yeah, all the time,” Cody says as we brace for another wave. “I mean, you can be completely technically correct, but if you don’t get what the music is about, the feeling you’re trying to portray, then it comes out all robotic.”

“It’s the same out here. Stop worrying so much about getting it right and just feel it.”

Cody raises his eyebrow as we jump on our boards, but I can see his normal look of Cody concentration come over his face as he paddles out next to me. We turn around to face the beach, a few feet from each other. I keep one eye out over my shoulder, evaluating the approaching waves.

“Here comes a good one,” I call to him.

He nods and paddles frantically to build his momentum.

“Go, go!” I yell as the wave swell lifts me up, then leaves me behind as it barrels on toward the shore.

I give a whoop when I see the wave break, and Cody’s still there riding it. He pulls out just before the shallow water and gives me a thumbs-up.

Now it’s my turn to catch one, and somehow it’s an even sweeter ride than before.

After another half hour, Cody and I signal each other, and I catch a last wave in to meet him.

Cody waits in ankle-deep water for me. He runs a hand through his hair, shaking out the water.

“Strangely, what you said out there made sense,” he says as we start our trek home through the sand dunes, sand caking our feet like another layer of skin. “It’s like the difference of treating surfing as an art versus a science.”

I roll my eyes as I hitch my surfboard up under my arm. “Only you could turn this into a philosophy thing. You just had to stop worrying about being perfect.”

“You’re telling me I’m not perfect?” He throws me a grin, his tone teasing.

“I’m telling you that when you stop trying to be perfect and just feel, you’re better than perfect.”

I walk for another few feet before I realize Cody has stopped and I’ve left him behind. I slow down and turn back to face him.

He’s still standing on the path, staring at me, eyes wide.

I replay my words, and my shoulders stiffen, my cheeks heating.

We stare at each other for a few heartbeats.

“And you claim I’m the philosopher,” he says finally, starting to walk again, taking long strides to catch up with me.

We reach the house.

“Wetsuit off, right?” This has to be one of my favorite bits about surfing now. Cody in a wetsuit is one thing, but Cody in only board shorts is a whole other dimension of awesomeness.

“Right.”

I strip down: the wetsuit releasing my skin in a loud slurp.

Cody strips down too, showing off his tanned skin and taut muscles. He grabs the hose, a smile licking at his lips as he turns toward me.

I recognize the look of calculation on his face… because it’s normally on mine. I narrow my eyes. “Do it and die.”

He tilts his head. “Nah, see, I’m now approaching all situations with the question, What would Ryan do? And I’m sure if you had the hose, you would do this.” He lifts the nozzle up and sprays the water at me.

The blast of cold is a shock to my skin, causing instant goose bumps.

“I can’t believe you just did that,” I splutter.

“Payback’s a bitch.” Cody’s still grinning at me.

His grin fades slightly as I stalk toward him.

He lifts the hose and sprays me again, but I brace myself for the cold and don’t let it deter me from my mission. Which is to grab him and try to wrestle the hose off him.

Cody doesn’t relent, and so we scuffle. I use my superior weight to pin him against the side of the house. He stretches out his arm, holding the hose as far away as he can, but I clamp down on his hand. I try to twist the hose out of his grasp, but his fingers cling on.

“Let go of the hose.”

“Never,” he replies. His breath is coming hard and fast. Mine is too.

Our chests are pressed together, and his face is so close to mine I can see a scattering of faint freckles across his nose. My heart rate picks up to match my breathing. I’m sure he feels the frantic thumping where our skin touches, an up-tempo beat.

I drop my gaze down to his mouth for a second, which is a mistake because now all I can think about is kissing him. About how it would feel to have his red, slightly chapped lips pressed against mine. My mouth goes dry.

When I flick my gaze back up to his, Cody’s eyes are wide, his smile dimming as we stare at each other. I can’t escape the intensity of his blue eyes. I don’t want to escape it.

I stay pressed against him, feeling his chest heaving against mine, trapped in his gaze.

Synopsis
Some stars aren’t meant to be followed.

For seventeen years, Ezra Newport and his parents were habitual immigrants, traveling from their Ottoman Empire home across 20th century Europe. As the Newports migrate to Belfast, Ireland, Ezra wants nothing more to settle into a consistent life and lay the foundation of his architectural dreams. But after a strange, mechanical bounty hunter murders his mother and prompts the disappearance of his father, Ezra discovers that his parents had actually been on the run. Now, their enemies are targeting him, and they won’t stop until he is dead.

In a moment of desperation, Ezra’s fate collides with the Third Order of the Magi, a secret society dedicated to using their supernatural powers to protect their communities. With increasing violence around the world, the Magi are fairly certain they know who’s behind the attacks on Ezra and his family since the same group could also be threatening their own existence.

Both Ezra and the Magi’s survival hinges on knowledge only Ezra’s father has and the key to saving them could be buried within history itself. In a race across continents and time, both Ezra and the Magi must secure an ancient Babylonian artifact before hell is unleashed on the world. And, against all odds, Ezra must decide where his allegiances truly lie, despite what is written in the stars.

Excerpt #3
Diego

Not very many things had the power to piss off Diego Montreal.

Disloyalty? Naturally.

Being held back? Of course.

Jonas’ embitterment toward his relationship with Stella? Without question.

Failure?

Failure had to be the worst offender. Nothing could make him feel more incompetent than defeat, especially if that defeat had anything to do with Time Manipulation.

Diego screwed up his face in concentration, squeezing the edges of the quartz wand into his palm. Usually illuminated with natural light, the chief constable’s office was now shrouded in shadows, too tenacious for the weak desk lamp bulb and the evening gloom. The Souvenirs—the ring and the electric torch—had been laid out before him, alongside Norman’s heavy scrutiny.

This time, it had to work.
“Forgive me for my lack of understanding, but I honestly don’t see why this situation is different than the rest,” the constable grumbled as he lit a cigar and propped his feet upon the desk. “This should have worked the first time. After all, you’ve managed to view crime scenes before.”

Diego lifted his burning gaze to his boss.

Despite his flagrant tone, the constable spoke the truth, as much as Diego hated to admit it. Previous attempts had gone without a hitch. But for some unknown reason, these crime scenes proved resistant to his abilities. What seemed like the simple work of a madman with a fondness for the word “quietus” had an impenetrable exterior. Every time Diego turned back Time to view these events, a thick darkness cloaked whatever evidence remained. He had never seen anything quite like it in any of his Time Excursions.

Either his abilities were somehow being drained or someone was erasing history. Both scenarios did not sound particularly thrilling.

“Yes, well, I wouldn’t expect you to understand the technicalities of it,” Diego muttered.

“No, I don’t,” huffed Norman, “but there’s something I do understand, and it is that now, we aren’t the only ones dealing with this madness.” The constable reached into his top drawer and dropped a newspaper on the workspace, further disrupting Diego’s focus.

His eyes skimmed the recent headline but backtracked when he realized it was in French. What Diego could not ascertain from the print, he translated from the front-page photograph.

Plumes of fire and coal dust disrupted what once was a mining operation. Lifts, splintered planks, and glass fragments littered the work site, while flocks of ravens dotted the chaotic skyline. While the photograph neglected to show any of the dead or injured, it did provide a glimpse of something far more impactful: the painful emotion in their comrades’ faces, streaked amongst the grime.

Whatever had just taken place not only rattled the northern French countryside. It had shaken survivors to their cores.

La catastrophe de Courriéres.

“They’re saying more than a thousand people are dead,” said the chief constable. “What they are not saying—in the papers, at least—is that authorities discovered the word quietus painted in red across one of the communal shacks. I suppose you can understand why this is a bit higher of a priority now that it has crossed international boundaries.”

Diego gritted his teeth and pushed the newspaper away from the Souvenirs. “So, the Irish Republican Brotherhood is out of the question, I assume?”

Norman narrowed his eyes. “Most likely.”

“Right. Well, there’s only one thing we can do,” Diego began, once again tracing the Star of David in the air with his quartz wand. “Pray my theory will hold strong enough for me to bring something back.”

“Best of luck, kid,” Chief Constable Norman said through a puff of smoke. “Do me proud.”

Diego saluted him and pressed the crystal tip to the face of his pocket watch. Focusing on the time and date written on the scraps of paper beside its corresponding Souvenir, Diego internally beckoned the power of the stars to navigate to the exact moment when the Dunmurry boy lost his life. The clock hands wound backward in a savage spiral. The present world faded away, like streaks of paint drowned in torrents of water. He was now a sailor amongst the Sea of Time, directing the helm toward imminent disaster.

Excerpt #2
Gregory

I thought back to the night Baker had cornered us in the pub, rerunning every moment in my memory. “Meriden, there wasn’t any driver. The horse wandered into the alley on its own.” Though, I had to admit to myself, that seemed convenient.

“I know.” Her voice was barely audible. “But I saw him. His entire body is like my hand in my dreams, and his eyes are completely black.” She shivered, probably from a combination of her story and the cold breeze that whipped by. “And this wasn’t the first time. I’ve seen him in my village as well. I thought he was one of the Railings’ gardeners that died in the attack. Now, I think there’s something more to it. Like I’m either cursed or mental.”

God, she must’ve been terrified if she was confiding such things to me. “I doubt you’re either,” I told her. Yet something brought to mind what Baker had said.

“Her blood is cursed, Mr. Wilson. Tainted by her family’s greed. Much like your own.”

“When did you say you started seeing the ghost? Was it after the pirate attack?”

Meriden’s head shot up. “Yes, but not right after. I’d been out for weeks because . . .” She trailed off, momentarily. “Because of the map, which was created from my blood.”

By the look on Meriden’s face, she had drawn the same conclusion as I had. Bloody hell. Baker had been right. Her blood had been cursed, which was probably why she saw her veins turning black. I took the hand she kept rubbing and flipped her palm toward the starlight.

Nothing visible, yet knowing it was there made me sick with grief. I pulled her trembling body closer and gently stroked her hair.

“Whatever this is, curse or otherwise, we solve it together. I promise.”

Meriden only nodded. Her mind focused on other things. I looked in the direction of the star she often wished upon, thinking of making a wish of my own—a wish that Baker was wrong—only to see a shadow in the distance.

“Meriden, toward the northeast.”

Meriden gazed over at the horizon. Without a word, she pulled a spyglass from a sack tied to the guardrail, extending it to its full length. “Frigate,” she said under her breath, then leaned over the rail to call into the night. “Sails!”

Synopsis
“If the world is full of monsters, how do we know who wears the crown…”

Hendrix:
In the dark of the night he bared his soul, delivering a shocking event that should’ve changed everything. So why in the light of day, does everything appear the same…? The further I’m immersed in this world he calls the ‘elite’, the more I don’t understand. And it’s not only his world I’m afraid I’m falling for, but the Golden Crown himself as well. But Pax still has secrets. And I want him to trust me, like a flame wanting fire.

Because despite his world being nothing as it seems, I’m not sure I could walk away even if I wanted to. Because the truth be told, I don’t want to.

I want him.

Paxton:
In the dark of the night I revealed a truth, delivering the brutal reality of what the elite really means. So why in the light of day, does everything appear the same…? It’s the same cat and mouse games, and the same political, power tricks where the Golden Crown is all they see. It’s all they want to see. Except for her.

But there are things I can’t tell her. Things I don’t think she’ll understand yet. And I need her to trust me, like a fire needing flame. Because despite me knowing what this world does to those who fall victim to it, I’m not sure I could walk away from Hendrix, even if I wanted to. Because the truth be told, I don’t want to.

I want her.

Excerpt #2
I took my lip beneath my teeth before opening my soul up as much as I was capable of. The words I were about to ask, meant more to me than she would ever know.

“I need you to trust me.”

I held my breath. Ready to wait for her reply but was surprised at how fast it actually flew from her mouth.

“I do.”

I stilled. “What? You trust me?”

I didn’t believe it. I was almost angry at Hendrix’s answer.

How could she trust me after everything I’ve put her through?

Everything I’ve hidden. It didn’t make any sense.

What also made no sense was her reaction either because she shook her head before taking a seat on the edge of her bed (which was too far away from me) where she played with the hem of her tee that was resting on her lap.

“Crazy huh? That I trust you. But… I can’t explain why I do. I’ve just always….”

“You’ve always what?”

She glances up, piercing my heart with her hazel eyes honing in on me with so much raw emotion. “I’ve always…” she starts, before seemingly coming to some realisation within herself. “When I was younger… I always sensed when things were wrong you know? Like that sixth sense that something bad was about to happen, or when danger was nearby. Even when I was too young to really understand my situation, I always knew deep down the kind of dangerous situation I was in. That it wasn’t normal. Well, it wasn’t everyones normal at least. I don’t expect you to understand, but I’m sure from those photos you saw that you have some idea of what I grew up in.” She pauses and my fists ball at the reminder instantly. I don’t have time to let that anger consume me though before she continues. “But I’ve just always trusted my instincts. They’ve never let me down and I guess in a lot of ways I’ve relied on it since I had no actual family to have my back. And…” she pauses again, nervously this time, when she notices me taking slow, measured steps toward her.

“And….?” I whisper, until I’m standing over her causing her head to tilt back to look up at me.

“And my gut? For some reason it trusts you Paxton. Despite you making me nervous, despite the things you say and the things you do. I feel safe around you. Protected. Like the only person capable of hurting me when you’re near – is no one else. Only…. you.”

My hand finds her cheek, letting her warmth seep into my palm. A palm, that was capable of so much destruction. So much hurt. But everything she just said was true. Because I’d always had this sense to protect her, like somehow our souls recognised the pain and destruction we both endured in our lives and wanted to somehow heal together. In most of our time together though, I wanted to protect her from me too. But this girl….

I held her as delicately as a guy like I could, when she gave me something of hers that was beyond precious. Her trust. I almost couldn’t believe she was giving it to me but it was something I was determined to keep. No matter the cost.

“You never asked me you know.”

“I never asked you what?”

“If I had something to do with… You never asked me.”

Her small fingers wrap around my wrist that’s still cupping her cheek and her eyes never sway from mine. “I may not know everything about you Pax, but I know you aren’t capable of something like that. I’ve been around monsters my entire life and you aren’t one. You’re not.”

I suck in a breath, wanting so much more in this moment when I breathe, “You called me Pax.”

She tilts her head, a knowing smirk crossing her delicate face. “It’s your name isn’t it?”

“I guess I like how it sounds coming from you.”

Then for the first time in a long time, I let myself feel…

Synopsis
I’m not your average girl.

My best friend is my switchblade. My favorite hobby is using it on the cruel, the abusive, and anyone who gets on my bad side. I’m a convicted murderer with a chip on my shoulder and a dangerous lack of restraint.

And then there’s Zak.

His rap sheet makes mine look tame. The bounty on his head is worth more money than I’ll ever make, and the deadly fae that shadow his every step wield more power than I’ll ever know.

He’s the Crystal Druid, and his first mistake was setting foot on my turf. His second was saving my life. And his final mistake will be failing to realize that however dark, however ruthless, however broken he is…

I’m worse.

Excerpt
When my attention landed on him, he strode toward me, his long legs eating up the ground and coat billowing out behind him. Stopping almost on top of me, he reached down as though to take my elbow—and seized the front of my jacket.

I grabbed his wrist as he roughly hauled me onto my tiptoes, bringing my face close to his. Despite the moonlight and forgotten flashlights illuminating the clearing, the interior of his hood was filled with unnatural darkness.

Ríkr watched us from his lofty perch, pale blue eyes gleaming.

“That was quite the scene I came in on,” the man rumbled in a low, dangerous tone. “What do you know about that bear fae?”

I stared into his hood.

A rough sound grated from his throat. “You don’t seem to be grasping the situation. Tell me what you know before I lose patience.”

I smiled, showing my teeth. “Was that a threat?”

“What do you think?”

My smile widened, and I lifted my empty hand toward his face. “It’ll take more than a hood and a threat to scare me, especially when”—I pushed his hood back—“I’ve already seen your face.”

The shadows fell away, revealing his countenance again. Inhumanly vibrant green eyes, framed by dark lashes, fixed on mine, his eyebrows lowered with menace. A beautiful face, if I were honest. Striking cheekbones, a strong jaw, full mouth—currently pressed into a thin, angry line. By my best guess, he was in his mid-twenties, maybe a bit older.

My palm brushed against his clean-shaven cheek as I let his hood fall—and with the same motion, I flicked my hand, pulling my switchblade from my jacket sleeve. The blade sprang free, and in an instant, I had the point resting against the corner of his left eye.

But not fast enough.

A cold, thin edge pressed against my left cheek. I didn’t break eye contact to see what sort of weapon he had in my face, but the blade felt sharp—sharper than my little knife.

Neither of us moved, his fist tight around the front of my jacket. If either of our hands wobbled, we’d both bleed.

His right eyebrow arched slightly. “How do you want to play this?”

“Let go of me.”

“I don’t think so.”

“I stab you, you stab me,” I suggested frostily. “My cheek is more likely to heal than your eye.”

“Pass.”

He wouldn’t let me go and he wouldn’t play knife-chicken. What was left? “Then I’ll answer your question if you answer one of mine.”

His full mouth thinned again, green eyes raking across me. “Fine.”

His agreement surprised me until I realized he expected to win this game too. He thought I’d reveal more with my answers than he would with his.

Not likely.

“Who the hell are you?” I demanded.

“Answer my question first.”

“You first. Who are you?”

He growled under his breath. “The Crystal Druid.”

Surprise flushed through me, and I couldn’t stop my eyelids from flickering with a single, startled blink. He was a druid?

“Now,” he rumbled, “tell me what you know about that bear and the other aggressive fae in this area.” “I don’t know anything.”

His blade pressed painfully into my cheek. “This little game doesn’t work if you lie.” “I’m not lying.”

“Then you’re an idiot. Every fae across the lower mainland is talking about the attacks and disappearances around here.”

“Fascinating, but this is the first I’ve heard of it.”

“Aren’t you a witch?”

“Yes, but a terrible one.”

His striking green eyes narrowed. “Terrible in what way?”

Ignoring his question, I shifted my blade ever so slightly, ensuring he couldn’t miss the sharp point in his peripheral vision. “My turn again. Why are you here?”

“The fae—”

“Yes, yes, the attacks. But why do you care about some aggressive fae?” I arched my eyebrows, though my bangs probably hid them. “What are you hoping to gain, Crystal Druid?”

Synopsis
They say you should never make a deal with the devil, but what about with the Prince of the Underworld?

Fresh off a breakup and an eviction, I started my day like any other: a book in one hand, a coffee in the other, and faking that can-do attitude inspirational memes are made of. I was ready to take on the world—and I did.

Unfortunately, it was the Underworld.

One freak accident later, I’m standing face to face with the sexy-as-sin and dangerously powerful Prince of the Underworld. He has a few burning questions for me—like how a mere human unlocked the door to the Underworld’s prison and released its prisoners.

I’d sure as hell like to know, too, because I have no freaking clue.

Now, instead of a forgettable bookstore clerk, I’m newly famous for doing the impossible. The wrong people want to thank me, and the rest want me dead. Spoiler alert: The Dark Prince definitely doesn’t want to thank me.

I’ll do anything to get my life back to normal and he’ll do anything to recapture the escapees. We make a deal: He’ll keep my enemies at bay, and I’ll find a way to return the prisoners.

Excerpt
“I’ve been pulled into something that I definitely don’t want to be in, dealing with people I hope to never encounter again. I want it to be over. I want to have nothing to do with this situation or you dreadful people.” I lifted my hand, presenting the markings. “If working with you is the only way, then I’m in. If we are working together, no more threats. I don’t care how thinly veiled they are. You will not bully me. Are we clear?”

His expression changed but it was still indecipherable. Understanding? I don’t think that was it. Amusement? Definitely. Portentous? It better not be.

His lips curled slightly into a small, tight, mirthless smile. He looked over his shoulder at Anand who flashed a grin. “I’ve been commanded to behave,” Dominic said to him. The laughter in his voice made its way to his eyes.

“Little Luna.”

“It’s just Luna,” I shot back.

“Luna. You are correct. I want to find the person behind this, especially if it is a Dark Caster. I know their history and the chaos and destruction they enjoy. It needs to be stopped. And to do so, we will have to work together.”

I’d been abducted and attacked by a vampire, sniffed by a lion, interrogated by a witch, and nearly devoured—or whatever his intentions were—by a wolf. I had every right to be overly cautious and I didn’t like the subtle undertones in his response. A limited alliance.

Excerpt #1
“I’ll tell you in exchange for something,” I bargain.

Rue squints at me warily.

“What?”

“I’ll tell you where we’re going and what we’re doing, if you give me a kiss.”

I hear Rue’s heartbeat speed up at these words. She might say she wants the omega as her mate, but her body is finely tuned to mine. Her tongue darts out to wet her lips, and I nearly groan at the sight. Her eyes are heavy-lidded, and she’s sending out all the right signals. She just needs to turn off her brain. I see her body war with her mind, and I know the moment her flesh wins. Her lithe frame becomes soft, and she leans in towards me.

“One kiss—that’s all.”

“One kiss,” I promise, leaning over.

“Well, not now!” Rue shrieks. “You’re driving!”

I chuckle at her outrage.

“Okay, when we get there, then.”

Exactly thirty seconds later, I stop the car.

“What are you doing?” she demands.

“We’re here—and I want my kiss.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Backup, buddy! You’re not getting that smooch for free. You tell me where we are right now.”

Rue peers out her window into the night. She hasn’t admitted it, but I know she can’t see anything. I wish she would tell me more about why she’s not like a normal wolf, but trust will come with time. If I want her to confide in me, I need to respect Rue’s boundaries.

“We’re at my grandma’s house,” I finally confess, making her gasp.

“Your grandma’s house?!”

“I told you I was going to feed you homemade tortillas and margaritas. What better place than at my grandma’s where you can meet my family, too.”

“But—but—but—” she splutters, “we could’ve done this back at the mansion!”

“Nah. I only make tortillas and margaritas at my abuela’s. Do you not want to meet them?”

“It’s not that—it’s just this is like tenth date shit, ya know?”

“I’m working with only three and a half days, so I’m speeding things up,” I remind with a wink.

Rue snorts.

“I’d say. Well, don’t think you can just skip all the bases and go to home plate, mister!” she admonishes severely.

“I know that’s a sports analogy, but I don’t get it,” I admit.

Rue’s tinkling laugh dances around us, and I can sense her irritation at my date plan fading away.

“Not a human saying you know, huh? It means that first base is kissing, second base is er, feeling one another up… third base is—shit. You know what? I don’t even know what the bases really are anymore except for first and home. Everyone changes them, but first is always kissing and home plate is when you finally bump uglies. You know—”

“Yes, I know,” I cut in. “Humans make sports analogies for sex?”

“Yep.”

“Strange. If I promise not to shoot it in your hoop before you dribble my balls, can we just try a kiss?”

Rue clutches her stomach as she bends, giggling hysterically.

“That’s not a saying!” she wheezes.

“Well, how am I supposed to know which sports analogies work and don’t work?”

I get out of the car and walk over to her side. Smoothly, I open her door and pull her out to me.

“Now, about that kiss.”

Excerpt #2
Thirty minutes had passed, and I hadn’t moved since Raysa left. I couldn’t stop thinking about Caiden and Bianca. I hated the jealousy brewing inside me over her being with him at the manor, while I was here, imprisoned. I couldn’t even go outside to relax.

I pulled off my robe to change but ended up scrutinizing my figure instead. I still wore the white lacy bra and panty set Raysa insisted I put on under the dress. They were pretty and, though I was no Victoria’s Secret model, the pieces did make me look almost curvy.

I glanced at my petite physique in the mirror and couldn’t believe my eyes. I moved closer to my reflection and zeroed in on my lips. They were fuchsia, but I didn’t have on lipstick. I grabbed a tissue and tried to wipe away the color, but it didn’t work. This close to my reflection, my eyes looked more lilac than blue, and my dark lashes had doubled in length. Assuming it was a goddess thing, but still a little freaked out, I dashed to the kitchen. My phone was on the counter and I wanted to ask Raysa what she thought.

When I passed through the family room, the front door swung open. I froze.

A dark figure entered the foyer and continued in my direction. Immediately, I thought of Dagan.

My heart raced as I ran for the stairs and my bedroom. I’d barely made it five steps when hands snagged me around the waist.

“No!” I tried to pry his fingers from my skin.

“It’s all right, Lily. It’s me.” Caiden pulled me against his chest.

I let out a breath and rested for a moment before I remembered that I was still in my bra and panties. “Close your eyes,” I ordered. “I’m not dressed.”

He chuckled. “You’re joking, right?”

“I’m not moving until you close your eyes.” At least, sandwiched against him, he couldn’t see my body. Not unless he craned his neck and blatantly stared down at me.

“Lily, it’s nothing I haven’t seen before. Remember?” His tone was silky and low.

“Remember that you peek? How could I forget? I won’t make that mistake ever again.” The feel of his warm hands flat against my stomach had me tight as a knot.

“Ever?” he whispered in my ear.

Shivers ran over my skin.

I jumped away and faced him. “Why are you here?”

His glittering eyes roamed my body, and a ray of gold flashed from his head to his feet. With his chin low, he peered up through dark lashes and inched toward me.

“What are you doing? Are you…losing it?” I backed up until I bumped into the wall.

He stopped in front of me. “Stay still.” He brushed my hair behind my shoulder and bent down to nuzzle his face in the crook of my neck. After a few deep breaths, he seemed to relax.

My body, however, did the opposite. My muscles coiled like springs. He was so warm and smelled so good. Unsure of what he was doing, but aware it wasn’t an attack, I closed my eyes and rested my head against the wall.

“I had to see you,” he breathed on my neck, his fingers lightly trailing up my arm. “Everything is right when you’re near.”

Synopsis
Blu
My entire life is my music—and all the trappings that come with it. Sex, booze, and rock ’n’ roll is all I ever wanted. Touring the world as the lead singer of Balefire, I have it all. Until on hiatus, I meet the girl next door.

Ashleigh Baker is nothing like the groupies and celebrities who usually have all my attention. In her cute floppy hat with her knees stained with dirt, she spends her days creating a flowering show piece from her rented yard. She’s the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever met, and she acts like she doesn’t want a damn thing to do with me. But from the moment I laid eyes on her, she’s all I can think about.

Ashleigh

Growing up the only child of an Air Force Colonel, all I wanted was to stay in one place for more than a minute. When I score a pretty little house with a long-term lease, I just want to grow my flowers and my freelancing gig as a music reviewer. Then a loud Harley wakes me from a sound sleep and I discover my neighbor is Blu Connolly. Yeah, that Blu Connolly, lead singer for my favorite band Balefire. With his killer good looks and panty-melting voice, he’s a walking temptation to sin. Though I do my best to avoid him, it seems Blu has other ideas. He’s on a mission to wear me down, let him in, but what happens when he stops wanting to sing for me?

 ————————————————————————————–

Excerpt #1
Mom lasered me with her eyes, and I barked out a laugh. Baiting my mother—another thing I’d missed.

“What does Ashleigh do, exactly?”

“She’s a substitute teacher at your old high school and she writes articles and submits them to all sorts of publications.”

“Yeah? What does she write about? Gardening?”

I might have laughed at the idea yesterday, but after seeing her sweet ass up in the air as she bent over the row of flowers she planted this morning, I had a sudden appreciation for gardening.

“She writes about music. Does a darn fine job of it too. She’s reviewed several local bands as well as some big ones. She even wrote a review of your show at Red Rocks last summer for some little blog. Her description of Dakota’s guitar and your voice specifically could have made Balefire a household name had you needed the boost. Her writing is that good.” Mom took a nonchalant sip of her wine, but I caught the look she shot me. “Or maybe I’m biased since she complimented my boy so flatteringly.”

“Yeah, well, maybe I should sing to her next time ’cause she sure didn’t flatter me today when I invited her to lunch.”

The conversation led me right back to that dark place it had taken me three hours of hard riding to escape. Ashleigh’s wine soured in my mouth as I heard her accusations in my head again.

Mom ignored my comment and my sudden bad mood. “You slept away most of the first two days you’ve been home. What are your plans for this evening?”

“Haven’t thought about it much. Maybe head down to the Dollar, see if anyone from the old days is still around, shoot some pool. After you feed me dinner,” I added with a sly smirk.

Truly, I should have offered to take Mom out to eat, but the woman could outcook any chef in the state. After months on the road, I craved her home cooking.

She smiled back at me, reading my mind again. “Your favorite dinner is thawing on the counter right now. I baked it last weekend for when you came home.”

“Yeah?” I asked carelessly before I bounced up out of my chair and raced into the kitchen. Sure enough, a huge pan of lasagna sat on the counter. Jesus, did I love that woman.

The tangible evidence of my mom’s love for me put a giant smile on my face as I headed to the bathroom to shower off the road grime and sweat from my ride. Though it was early June, the temperature insisted on summer, and I could smell myself when I walked back into the house.

When I finished cleaning up, I found Mom in the kitchen singing some pop tune softly as she busied herself with dinner. Her taste in music ran to mellow, and I had to laugh as I walked into the kitchen. As our biggest supporter early on, she attended almost every one of our shows and smiled and danced all the way through them. We’d been playing professionally for three or four years when I discovered the earplugs. To this day I have no idea what she heard in her head as we played, but it wasn’t us. Still, she’d had a good time and inspired others around her to join her in that, which improved the vibe of our early shows.

Thoughts of those long-ago shows led me back to Mom’s comment about Ashleigh’s articles. After dinner, I googled her to see what she’d said about us. Not that it mattered. The woman appeared pretty hostile to me during our first two meetings. Then I read an article she wrote for Rocky Mountain High, an online arts and entertainment blog.

The Balefire concert at Red Rocks last weekend blasted all expectations of what a rock show is or should be. The band’s musicianship, sound quality, pyrotechnics, and light show exceeded anything offered at Red Rocks in recent memory. From Jack Whitehorse’s opening drum solo pounding through the collective chest of the crowd to Dakota Perri’s blistering guitar licks revving the audience into a frenzy to Adam Tron’s driving bass forcing people to jump out of their seats and dance, the band grabbed the audience by the throat and refused to let go for two solid hours of nonstop, over-the-top thrill ride.

However, Balefire’s signature sound lies in the incredible vocal range of the band’s lead singer, Blu Connolly. From his primal screams on “Out of My Head” to his smooth baritone rumblings on “You’re the One” to his pitch-perfect harmonies with Whitehorse on their new song “Missing You,” Connolly’s voice is the heart and soul of the band. No wonder during a Balefire concert, women toss their underwear at the stage with wild abandon. The man has the ability to make panties to drop every time he steps up to a microphone.

Huh. So Ashleigh liked the show at Red Rocks. More than that, she loves my voice, at least when I’m using it to sing.

Mom was right about Ashleigh’s ability to review music too. Her words made me think back on that show, one of our best. Her article reminded me why I absolutely fucking love what I do for a living even when a tour wrings me out. Panty-dropping voice. Her description made me smile. Sobering, I pondered what it would take to tempt the delectable yet prickly Ashleigh Baker to drop her panties for me.

Synopsis
It’s no secret that I hate Phineas Yates, but what most people don’t know is that I have a very good reason why. One hot summer, he broke my heart in the worst way, and I promised myself then and there that I would never fall prey to the sinner of Pembroke Prep again. Even if it meant re-inventing myself into a girl I barely recognized.

There is a fine line between duty and desire.

I’m not just any girl, I’m a princess. When my family begs me to get engaged to save the family name, I’m trapped with no way out. In a panic, I blurt out the ultimate lie and create myself a fake boyfriend. Which means I need someone to foot the bill immediately.

The problem? The only person willing to help me is the one person I never want to see again: the careless, heartless, hot-as-Hellfire playboy himself.

Phineas Yates.

The even bigger problem? His help doesn’t come for free. And this sinner won’t be satisfied with anything less than my absolute ruin.

Synopsis
Lush. Dark.

Clair.

Synopsis
“What would you do if Death gave you a second chance?”

Most people who escaped death were relieved, happy to be granted that second chance at life. In my case, it was more of a curse than a blessing.

Everyday I woke, I was tortured with another soul. They all wanted something from me, but I couldn’t give it to them. Instead, I ignored them. I neglected the pain they had laced beneath their hollow eyes. I dismissed the screams that shattered my eardrums every time my head hit the pillow.

The souls took pleasure in patronizing me. They were a constant reminder of why I shouldn’t have been granted a second chance.

I had managed to escape Death twice, but the third time was my undoing. He came back with a heavy vengeance. Suddenly, I was thrown into a battle between two brothers. Heaven and Hell. Light versus Dark.

They both needed me on their side, but after facing Death for the third time, I wasn’t sure I would survive the cruel fate he had planned.

Excerpt #2
A minute later, the doorbell rang. I glanced at Emery and noticed she was still in her peaceful slumber, when I made my way to the door and opened it. Deagan’s crooked smile greeted me on the other side of the door as I let him in. “Took you long enough.”

I closed it shut behind him and rubbed my hands over my face. “What now?”

His footsteps sounded against the hardwood floors as he made his way over to her. He bent at the knee and examined her face. ”Damn, I forgot how beautiful she was.”

I cleared my throat and got a harsh look in return. “I wonder what would happen if we rewrote history this time…” he trailed off and my shackles rose.

My face scrunched. There was no way in hell that was happening. “What are you talking about?”

His fingers caressed her cheek, and my body stiffened. “I mean, what if instead of her falling for you, she fell for me?”

I took a few steps forward. “That’s not how it works—”

“Don’t you think I know that, Ace? Fuck, why do you get the happy ending and I don’t?” he asked, his voice pleading.

“I didn’t get my happy ending.” I said through clenched teeth. He damn well knew what happened last time and that’s why I was doing everything in my power to prevent it.

He stood up and his hands balled into fists at his sides. “Didn’t you though? You got the girl. I stood back and ruled from the pits of Hell while you galivanted off like some fucking hero.”

Synopsis
The God Queen returns. So, why is everyone squelching her power?

In a backwater Earth town, Rei Ettowa dreams of traveling across the stars to destroy Infiernen – the knight who murdered her brother.

When Rei discovers she is the reincarnation of the prophesied God Queen, she relishes her newfound ability to channel lightning for revenge. Unfortunately, blazing through a battlefield clashes with the Federation’s plan for Rei and the others like her. All the gods are to be trained as diplomatic figureheads to sway voters, not agents of war. Infiernen must remain untouched.

Unable to let go of her brother’s murder, Rei finds Infiernen. But instead of killing him, Rei discovers a secret the Federation has been keeping from her about her brother.

Now Rei is mad as hell. Her enemies must pay. But who are they? And what else is the Federation hiding from her?

Excerpt #1
Chapter 7

Bronx stood in a golden forest. Shimmering leaves that reflected the sunlight covered the ground around him, yet he saw no sun. Black tree trunks reached the height of at least three men before the first golden branch appeared. A gentle breeze moved through the woodland, carrying with it the soft scent of lavender. He took a few steps forward, daring to venture in further. The soft ground absorbed the sound of his footsteps. He didn’t see a single living thing around him, and the silence wrapped him like a cocoon.

The crack of a branch echoed in the distance, and Bronx whipped around but saw nothing. He wasn’t alone.

“Bronx?”

He snapped awake. Crona peered down at him. He must’ve dozed off. Documentation was the most boring part of being a combat medic for the Federation, but Bronx preferred the monotony over returning to the battlefield. He wasn’t ready for that yet.

“Interesting read?” she asked, gesturing to the mountain of paperwork.

“Riveting.”

“Yeah, the snoring was a good indication.” She pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down.

He chuckled. “It’s the only way to let people know. In case they’re curious about what I’m reading.”

“I’m well aware of the practice. I believe I have done my fair share of snoring after reading some captivating reports on supply chains.” She snorted, taking a handful of papers and placing them in a folder.

“Must run in the family, then.”

“At least on Mom’s side. From what I knew of your dad, he would have actually stayed awake for this sort of thing.” She cocked her head to the side. “Professor of Anthropology, right?”

Bronx nodded but bit his tongue. Crona never met his father, but he knew hers. He never got along with his half-sister’s father and was quite certain that anything he said in his presence would come off as an insult.

He returned to his paperwork.

From where they were stationed on the planet Gliese VI, they saw little action in the current civil war with the Dominion. However, they were close enough to get the wounded from nearby planets, the ones still fighting to be free of the hold of their leader, Sovereign Anekris Praymer. Bronx currently filled out a form in the medical wing for a soldier who was flown in the day before. First Petty Officer… something Prue; he couldn’t recall the soldier’s first name now. He’d been brought to Gliese VI because it was the closest facility and currently lay in a bed, the steady beep of his heart monitor the only sound that echoed in the medical wing.

It wasn’t a very large facility with its six beds and various monitors and machines, with desks for the medics on the far end. Despite being underground, the shiny metal plating surrounding them made it easy to keep clean and avoid infection.

“Manca! Sandern! I was just looking for you two. I have news!” Kazimir Ettowa entered the medical wing with a large piece of paper. He ran a free hand through his unruly black hair, his blue eyes bright.

“Your family, Kaz?” asked Crona.

Kaz nodded and handed the message to Bronx.

Found them. Had a little run-in with Negander while on Earth. Will be arriving on Gliese VI within the hour. Have Bronx bring a stretcher.

—M

“What does it mean?” asked Crona, who read it over Bronx’s shoulder.

“Obviously, someone’s hurt,” Kaz said.

“Or worse,” said Bronx quietly.

“No need to be negative just yet.” Crona pointed at the time stamp on the message. “Let’s go. They’ll be here soonish, and I want to welcome our new friends to the party.”

“I’ll help with the stretcher,” Kaz offered.

Bronx threw other necessary supplies—a pulse scanner, gauze, and tools for stitches—into a bag and slung it over his shoulder. He joined Kaz in helping with the stretcher

The beeping from Prue’s heart monitor grew erratic, and the petty officer breathed irregularly with labored and painful sounds that stopped as quickly as they began.

Bronx dropped his bag, sat down at the edge of Prue’s bed, and took off his gloves, unsure why he did it, as if his actions were not his own. His heart hammered in his chest, knowing what was about to happen, and yet he didn’t fight it; some part of him knew this was the right thing to do.

“Uh… Bronx—” began Crona as she approached him, but it was too late.

Bronx reached out and took the man’s hand. Some force pulled on what felt like a string. Teasing him, taunting him. He tugged on it hard and everything unraveled. Dread pooled in his core. He knew what he’d freed—a soul. A plume of black smoke appeared above Prue’s body, curling upwards before it dissipated in the air. Prue took one last deep breath and with a heavy sigh, he died.

“Shit,” muttered Bronx as he regained control of his body, releasing Prue’s hand like it burned him. He leaped from his seat and backed away, knocking over a tray of scalpels and tongs. The metal clanged as each of the pieces hit the ground. This was not the first time, but he always prayed it would be the last. He looked over at his sister; Crona said nothing as she put a hand to her mouth, stunned.

Bronx felt his sister approach. “Are you alright?” she asked.

Bronx’s eyes darted in her direction. His face lost all feeling, his legs weak. He’d done it again, and this time, there’d been witnesses. Shit.

Bronx rubbed his face. “I—I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“I’m sure you had a good reason,” Kaz said.

“That’s the thing.” Bronx paced, adrenaline rushing through his legs. “I didn’t have a good reason. I just felt compelled. Like I could ease his suffering if I did something.” He rubbed his face again’.

“Well, you certainly eased his suffering. As well as any other ailment he would feel in the future,” mumbled Crona, leaning on the bed next to Prue’s.

Bronx glanced back at his sister. “You’re not funny.”

“I’m not trying to be. This is serious.”

“Of course this is serious. A man just died.” Bronx’s voice shook. He took a deep breath. “Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here. Everything I touch dies.” He sat down in a chair next to Prue’s bed and put his head in his hands.

“That’s not true!” Kaz said.

Crona approached him, getting as close as she dared. She reached out to him, but he pulled back. “Bronx, I’ve managed to hug you loads of times before, and you haven’t killed me yet.” She pointed to her eyes. “I can see the future, remember?” She reached out quickly and pinched his cheek. “See? Haven’t killed me yet.”

Bronx pulled back and swatted her hand away. “Stop it.”

“No, you stop it.” She tried to lock eyes with him, but he refused to meet her gaze. “I’m sorry Prue died. I know you didn’t do it on purpose, but face the facts. Look at the bigger picture. You kill people with a touch—that’s your gift. I know you have no idea what you’re doing, but we will get through this, and you will learn how to control it.”

“Your sister’s right, Bronx.” Kaz hadn’t moved from his position at the foot of Prue’s bed. “We’re all still figuring things out. I know we sound like we don’t understand since our powers aren’t as deadly, but we are on your side.”

Bronx stared at his sister, his pulse rising. He knew she was right, and he hated it. It frustrated him. He wished she would just leave him alone on the subject. He may no longer wear the uniform, but his own Daer instincts still kicked in.

He took a moment to take several calming breaths before responding. “You’re both insufferable.”

Crona shrugged. “And you’re acting like a little shit. What do you want me to do? Agree with you? Oh, woe is you, Bronx! Yes, everything you touch dies. Maybe you are a freak.”

“That’s a bit much, Crona,” muttered Kaz.

“Stop it!” Bronx snarled.

“No,” she said flatly. “Because it’s not true. You are not a freak; you are doing so many good things here. Not everything you touch dies. You’re the one with the magic touch. You have a higher success rate of saving people than any other corpsmen. I know, I’ve seen the stats.”

He refused to meet her gaze. He knew he was being stubborn, but he didn’t want to listen to her.

Crona rolled her eyes, then turned to Kaz. “Come on. He stops being fun when he’s like this.” She walked to the stretcher. “I’m sure Manden and the others will be here soon.”

Bronx removed his other glove and threw both away in the trash with enough force to tip it over. “I’m coming.” He grabbed a second clean pair, put them on, and stood to help Kazimir once more with the stretcher.

“But first, can you help me put him into cold storage?” He gestured to Prue. “I’ll worry about the paperwork when we get back.”

Chapter 8

The medical wing sat at the end of a long and shiny metal-plated hallway where the Federation soldiers slept. This floor was only for women, while the men stayed below.

Bronx and Kaz carried the stretcher down the hall as Crona ran ahead to a different tunnel to grab the keys to their vehicle for the long drive to the hangar. The tunnel to the hangar was still underground, but without the metal plating. Its long row of UV lights along the low ceiling was the only hint of technology present, aside from the few cars parked at the entrance. The musty smell of fresh earth and car exhaust was more pungent here, but the stench lessened once they started driving.

As Crona drove, Bronx decided to push his current problem out of his mind and tried to think about what awaited him at the other end of the tunnel: Rei Ettowa.

When he had apprenticed with Niklaryn all those years ago, he frequently saw his mentor sneaking glances at a picture of his little sister. Niklaryn never told a soul about her, but he trusted Bronx. Bronx had heard so much about her that he felt he already knew her, yet he never thought that he would meet Rei after what happened.

Part of him expected to see the same young girl from the photo—with pigtails and missing front teeth—but he knew she was only a few years younger than him and was prepared to meet a young woman. What he hadn’t prepared for were the questions she was bound to ask about the day her brother died.

“Bronx?” Crona’s voice rang through his head like a bell. “Oy! Wake up!”

Bronx snapped out of his reverie to find that they had already arrived at the hangar. It was hidden deep within Mount Environ, several kilometers away from their base. The underground tunnel they had just traveled through allowed a veil of secrecy for the comings and goings of their soldiers. Bronx jumped out of the bed of the vehicle and approached Manden’s ship.

According to their friend, the Luciernaga was several thousand years old and resembled a hodgepodge of scrapped ships, metal pieces—some of them gold—and a few ion cannon stations that appeared to have been placed randomly, yet had been essential. Bronx swore the end result made Luciernaga look like a face with the cockpit as the eyes and the front hatch as its mouth.

The hatch opened like a long tongue, and their redheaded friend strode out to greet them. Crona ran to Manden and almost knocked him down with a big hug. Kaz followed with a hand extended.

“Are you kidding?” Manden pulled Kaz in for an embrace. “Come here, you.”

Bronx stayed behind as usual.

“Bronx,” Manden said, giving the medic a nod.

“You look familiar,” said a young man who came into view from the hatch. He was as tall as Bronx with brown hair and light eyes. For a moment, the medic thought a ghost had come back to haunt him. Niklaryn? he wanted to ask. The newcomer’s violet eyes flashed. He was someone different, and yet it still took several moments for Bronx’s heart rate to return to normal.

“Do I?” asked Bronx. “I’m sorry, I don’t know your name.”

“Arram Bronto.” The young man extended a hand to Bronx, who only stared at it.

“Bronx, doesn’t do hand shaking,” muttered Manden.

Arram pulled his hand back. “Sorry.”

Bronx shook his head. “I’ll explain later.”

“Okay.” Arram stepped out of the way, clearing the path for Kaz and Bronx to enter the ship. “You’re a Daer Knight, right?” he continued.

“I was once.” Bronx readjusted his grip on the stretcher, his heart pounding in his chest. This was the moment; he was going to meet her. The stretcher must be for either Bernie or Rei.

“He still is a Daer,” added Crona.

“Well, I-I’m sure Rei will be excited to meet you,” was all Arram said as his eyes stared at the floor, the muscles in his jaw flexing.

“Where is she, by the way?” interjected Crona.

“She’s probably with Bernie,” Manden said, walking toward his ship.

He, with Kaz helping on the other end, continued hauling the stretcher up the ramp into the first room of the ship—the cargo hold.

“We’re in the infirmary.” Manden’s voice echoed from the belly of the ship. The infirmary sat behind the cargo hold, currently filled with plants from every corner of the star cluster. A mix of lilac and magnolia filled Bronx’s nose.

The men maneuvered the stretcher around the mesh metal staircase that led up to the rooms, kitchen, and cockpit.

Bronx sneezed as they ventured through what appeared to be a small forest, lightly brushing against several pots of vines overflowing onto the floor. He continued to the infirmary where Manden and Bernie stood on either side of a bed.

“I didn’t want to leave her alone in case she suddenly woke up. That’s why I didn’t come out earlier,” Bernie said quietly. She turned and saw that the combat medic had entered. “Hey, Bronx, Kaz.”

Bronx didn’t answer. All his thoughts focused on the unconscious woman lying before him in blood-splattered clothes. Rei Ettowa appeared to be asleep, her dark hair framing her face. His pulse raced.

Not long after Niklaryn was gone, he dreamed about a beautiful woman who made his heart stop with a smile. Time had since obscured many of the details, but he clearly remembered Rei’s face.

He never told anyone about it, thinking that she was some subconscious fantasy. But somehow his brain must have created the woman of his dreams from memories of Rei. Thank the gods Nik wasn’t here. He knew he shouldn’t have impure thoughts about his mentor’s kid sister—no matter how attractive she may be.

He pulled the pulse scanner out of his bag, placed it on her neck, and read the little screen. The lines blipped, showing a strong and steady heartbeat.

He lowered his face toward hers to better hear her breathing—slow and steady. He pulled away, using all his willpower to not lean in closer. His eyes glanced over the rest of her body, trying to the find the source of the blood on her clothes.

“I don’t see a wound,” he said.

“Just a graze from a bullet. I already patched her up.” Manden pointed to Rei’s other side.

“Very nice.” He admired the tiny stitches. It was no surprise knowing Manden’s history on the battlefield. “And the rest of the blood?”

“Unlucky victim,” Bernie said.

Bronx helped Manden move her to the stretcher; he double-checked that the gloves reached his sleeves so that not an inch of skin was exposed. One could never be too careful.

“What happened?” Bronx took one end of the stretcher while Manden held the other, leading it out of the infirmary and through the cargo hold.

“As I said in my message,” Manden said, “we had a run in with the Negander. They attacked the town, trying to get to Rei and Arram. Bernie, Hotara, and I managed to save them in time; however, the Negander had already killed Sagitan and his wife.” He gazed down at their unconscious newcomer. “This little lady was angry. Her powers came out for the first time and fried them.”

“It was quite a sight,” Bernie said.

“She used too much energy and passed out,” Manden said. “It happens to people like her at some point in their lives.”

“Where is Hotara?” Kaz asked.

“I sent her to Tas’und’eash. With any luck, she can rally the rest of the Volocio to help with our cause.”

The group continued out of the ship and back toward the vehicle. Arram took Rei from Bronx and helped Manden carry the stretcher.

They brought Rei to the medical bay and laid her down on an empty bed. Bronx made sure it was far away from where Prue had passed earlier.

He placed a heart monitor on her finger and waited for the steady beep to fill the silence in the room. Arram stood nearby, his eyes never leaving Rei’s face. Bronx imagined how concerned he must have been.

“Come, Arram.” Crona linked arms with him. “They’re still serving dinner in the mess hall. You look like you could use some food.”

“I feel uncomfortable leaving her here,” he said quietly.

“I’ll stay,” offered Bronx. “I’m still on duty here.”

Arram nodded and allowed Crona to lead him out the room with Kaz following.

Crona stopped at the door and quickly glanced in Bronx’s direction. “Should I bring you something, too, Brother?”

Bronx shook his head. “I know where Ayres hides his snacks. I’ll be fine.”

Manden stayed behind, watching Bronx thoughtfully. The redhead always did that when he studied one of them—as though he were trying to see more of Bronx than what was there.

“Yes, Manden?”

He cocked his head to the side. “I’m desperate to know what you’re thinking.”

“Thinking?”

“About her.” Manden gestured to Rei lying between them.

Bronx couldn’t shake the feeling of having met her before, but that was impossible. “Well,” he finally answered, “she’s a great conversationalist.”

Manden chuckled. “Jokes aside, smart ass. I really want to know. I’ve been looking forward to the two of you meeting for a long time.”

The medic shrugged. “Kind of hard to have a meeting when one’s unconscious.”

Manden waved his hand dismissively in Bronx’s direction “Bah. Details.”

“Does this have to do with him?”

“Yes.”

Of course it did. Everything in Bronx’s life the last few years always came back to that man, and a part of him resented it.

“I’m sure you’ve felt some of his memories. As dreams, perhaps?”

Bronx clenched his sweaty palms, which stuck to his gloves. “Dreams?”

“Your sister once told me about dreams she had before her powers manifested. Kaz, too. That’s what they are. Memories. I watched Rei go through hers, so I’m just taking a leap here.”

It was bad enough Bronx shared the same gift and the same face as the man in question. But Manden suggested they had the same taste in women. The idea didn’t sit well with him, but his body already betrayed him whenever he looked in her direction. His pulse elevated and his mouth had gone dry.
Manden still watched him, waiting for a response. But Bronx didn’t want to talk about that, so he stuck with a truth he was comfortable with.

“I’m relieved she’s here and she’s safe.”

“Oh?”

“You remember me telling you how I knew Niklaryn? We were close friends. Close enough that I was the only person he told about her. Not everything—only that she needed to be protected. He made me vow to protect her if something happened to him.”

“You’ve done a great job doing that all these years,” Manden said dryly.

“Niklaryn forgot to give me the minor yet crucial detail of where she was hidden. I knew Earth, but that was it. Then there was the problem that no one else knew about her, so who could I ask? It turned out your wife hid her all along.” Bronx laughed. The universe really wanted them to meet. He believed it was some cruel joke.

“You’ll have a chance to uphold that vow now, Bronx. I don’t know how she’s going to react when she wakes up. The last few days have been overwhelming for her. You saw how Arram is handling things and he just lost his grandparents. Rei lost everyone she knew and grew up with. Infiernen and his Negander destroyed her entire town. Her powers manifested out of pure rage. She brought down countless Negander and turned them into charred husks.”

Bronx’s eyes widened, and his heart stopped at the mention of Infiernen. He hunted her, too? It made sense. The Negander had been hunting Bronx and the others for years now.

He studied Rei. He didn’t think she would be so dangerous—almost as dangerous as he was. The idea of no longer being the only one with lethal gifts gave him a little comfort, especially if it meant protecting the others against the Negander.

“You and I are the ones with the most battle experience,” continued Manden. “We’ve seen the most. We also know what happens to those who experience trauma and have no support group to help them through it. These two are the only survivors of that massacre. Just be prepared.”
“Of course.” Trauma was something Bronx knew plenty about.

MAGICIAN RISING, a stand-alone new adult urban fantasy, by Renée des Lauriers is Out Now!

Excerpt #2
Then Nikolai felt it: the air pulling tight, like the bowstring of an arrow drawn back, about to be let loose. Nikolai clenched the wooden arms of his chair. This was magic capable of much worse than a 6.5 earthquake and one injury. He braced himself in the case of a quake, scanning down the rows in front of him for any sign of a magician at work.

There were too many people, and all of them could be crushed to death if the building collapsed. This was exactly what he wanted to avoid. If he stopped the magician before the magic spiraled out of control, he could limit the amount of casualties.

Then the lights went out. Everyone was plunged into a deep darkness. There was a pause for a beat before a worried murmur took over the class. Cell phone lights flashed around the room. Nikolai knew this was the moment he could strike; his aim with the knife would be deadly. If only he had a target.

Almost as soon as the pressure in the air started, it faded away. Nikolai felt the charged air around the room recoil and disappear, vanishing like mist. The lights flickered back on. Immediately he tried to identify the source, but it was impossible with everyone looking around, talking in hushed voices while their spineless professor tried to calm the students. The class began to settle once more, though a lot of students quickly packed their belongings to leave. Maybe they could feel it, the unsettling shift in the air. Or smell the burnt ozone.

It was strange, though. He never experienced anything quite like this. When magic was built up to that strength and caliber, it typically rampaged into mass destruction. This was something else. This magician was nothing like the others he’d taken down in the past.

Synopsis
The past should be behind her, but for Bri McAndrews, it keeps sneaking up in the worst ways. Lies, vicious plots, and manipulation follow Bri everywhere she turns. All she wants is to pick up the pieces and move on with her life, but the mistakes she’s made continue to haunt her, hurt her, pull her under. And with the sting of Trey’s latest betrayal still very fresh, Bri doesn’t know if she can truly trust him with her heart, leaving her at a crossroads she’s not ready to face.

The future should be bright, but for Trey Donovan, that’s the furthest thing from the truth. Trey has more regrets than he can count on one hand. To find atonement, he’s had to own up to the things he’s done, creating a rift with Bri he can’t seem to mend. Trey only wants the life with Bri he sees in his mind, but it keeps evading him, remaining just out of reach—especially when they find themselves standing between two of the most important people in their lives.

You need darkness in order to see the stars shine, but when a storm blows in, leaving a thunder cloud that blocks any semblance of hope, will two hearts become one, or have they become too tarnished to find their someday?

Excerpt #1
Trey set me down on his bed before locking his door. He pressed his lips against mine before sucking on the spot below my ear just to drive me wild. My eyes drifted his way before he captured me in a kiss that left my toes curled and completely out of breath. I leaned forward to resume what he started, but he pulled away, a fiery look in his eyes.

Arching an eyebrow, I pointed out, “You devoured my mouth a second ago and now you’re playing hard to get. What game are you trying to play?”

“I’m always up for that with you, but it’s going to be on my terms,” Trey murmured, his voice husky.

He went into his closet to retrieve a small box. My eyes were wary while I unwrapped it. A lacy, pink thong was inside, along with a matching bra. I turned them over, curious as to why Trey’s eyes were dancing with delight.

“I want you to wear these tonight. I think you’ll find them…stimulating,” Trey spoke up, a naughty grin on his face.

“Okay. I was really hoping to have a little fun before we left, but I can already tell you’re going to string things out. We should start getting ready if we’re going to make it downtown on time,” I replied with a frown that reflected my disappointment.

Trey chuckled. “We’re going to have plenty of fun tonight—all in due time. Why don’t you go take a shower? I may even join you.”

Clearly he wants to play just as much as I do. Game on, sweets!

Everything south of me clenched tightly together, but I could tell by the sinful look in his eyes he wouldn’t shower with me. I discarded my black skirt and purple blouse with several flicks of the finger. Trey sucked in a ragged breath while clutching his comforter. My matching red bra and underwear were the next to go. His eyes took on that sensual look I loved seeing. I sashayed to the door, wiggling my ass with each step.

“Fuck, you’re going to be the death of me,” Trey growled, tightening his hold on the blanket.

“Funny you used that tone. You know what it does to me. I’d be more than happy to satisfy any itch you have. All you have to do is follow me,” I goaded, batting my eyelashes.

“Go get in the shower now,” Trey demanded, clutching his sides in a last-ditch effort not to pin me against his door and kiss me senseless.

Before I walked out the door, I glanced over my shoulder, flashed my “come and get it” smile, and drawled, “You’ve got that look in your eyes that tells me you’re really struggling not to spank my ass. I’m curious if the alpha in you will roar up or if you’ll hold on to this newfound restraint. Either way, you know where to find me.”
