That is, until her parents tell her they can’t afford to continue paying her tuition. While she’s stressed over how she’ll make ends meet and finish her degree, her friend tells her a secret she’s kept hidden—that she works at a strip club with many rich, good-looking men as her customers.
Rose enters Club Red, looking only for a waitressing position, but what she finds ends up being so much more.

Excerpt #1 Trying to gather my nerves, I walk up to the door. It’s large, and it looks to be made out of steel. I try to turn the handle, but it’s locked. I knock twice, waiting for someone to answer the door. I take in the surroundings. If it wasn’t for the flashy cars in the front of the building, it would appear to be an abandoned building.
When the door swings open, a very large man with blond hair, and the most hypnotizing blue eyes stands in the doorway. I take a step back. To say he intimidates me is an understatement.
He’s wearing a cobalt-blue dress shirt, rolled up on his forearms. The color makes his sapphire eyes shine bright. I take in his body. The rippling muscles on his arms, the strong jawline he possesses, and the tattoos that crawl up under the sleeves of his shirt and peek out of his collar. The man screams badass.
He scans me from the toe of my shoes to the top of my head, and when his eyes come back to meet mine, he gives me a wicked grin. He has to be the most breathtaking man. I have had the pleasure of sharing the same space with.
I’m barely able to get the words out. “I’m here to see Liz Black.”
His tongue darts out, licking his lips, and then his teeth slowly pull in his bottom lip. I try my best not to seem effected by his good looks, but it appears the cocky bastard notices how much he has affected me. My attention is tuned in to how long and thick his tongue is. Holy Mother Teresa, my mind is in overdrive as to what he could do with that weapon.

Excerpt #2 In front of them was the lush jungle, where the shooting had come from the night of the party, but Ricardo led her to the right. A six-foot wooden gate blocked their path. Ricardo pushed it open with such gusto Maggie thought it might come right off the hinges.
“Care for a swim?”
He left the gate open as he stepped closer to the pool. It was a simple lap pool—no diving board—but the turquoise water took Maggie’s breath away. Sand-colored paving stones edged up to the pool and the relaxing sounds of a water feature along the far wall threatened to overtake the piano music coming from inside.
The sun had already set by the time Maggie had arrived for dinner, but the lights around the pool were all they needed. Of course, she wasn’t planning on swimming any laps.
Ricardo unbuttoned his short-sleeved shirt, took it off, and placed it on a lounge chair nearby. Two towels were neatly folded on the chair as if he’d planned this the whole time.
She bit her lip as he pulled her close. Her whole body tingled when he kissed her neck and slowly worked his way to her lips. She closed her eyes and savored every moment. When he pulled her top over her head, she thanked God she hadn’t worn a wire. Did the bug on the balcony have enough range that the team in the apartment would hear them? She pushed the thought out of her head. At this point, she didn’t care.
Ricardo lightly caressed her shoulder, and she dragged her fingers down his jaw line, his dark five o’clock shadow rough to her touch.
As he tugged off his pants, she reached behind her back and undid her bra, shaking it off and letting it fall to the ground at the same time as Ricardo’s pants. To her surprise, he wasn’t wearing underwear.
“Ay,” said Ricardo, running a hand along her hip. She placed his hand on her breast, letting him know she wanted him to touch all of her. He trailed a finger along the side of her nipple, causing it to double in size.
She let her head fall back and stretched her arms out, and he pulled her close. The hard bulge of his erection pressed into her hip as they kissed again. Her groin throbbed, and she paused to take off her skirt. Ricardo strolled to the pool then sat on the stonework, dangling his legs in the water.
He cringed. “Wow. That’s a little cold.”
Maggie laughed. Instead of joining him at the edge of the pool, she slipped her naked body into the waist-high water and stood in front of him. She took a deep breath as her body adjusted to the cool temperature of the water, then placed her hands on his thighs. He tilted her chin upward with his fingertip and bent his head to press his lips to hers. They were full and soft, and Maggie forgot all about the cold water.

Excerpt #1
A shadow stands up from the sand.
One shadow. Theo.
Alone.
He’s standing in sand that has been thoroughly fucked up by a plane landing on it, and that motherfucker, that green-eyed innocent who needed encouragement to fuck June, is alone. What happened to her? He looks rough, but not particularly beaten. Not shot. The relief is threaded through with stark cold fear. Where the hell is June?
I’m running before I realize it.
Before I’ve had time to catch my breath and assess the situation. Doesn’t matter at all that I’ve just run through the jungle. I could run forever, but I don’t have to. It’s against mission protocol to drop my entire backpack on the ground, but I shrug it off and let it fall.
Theo turns at the sound.
I have two strides to notice his black eye—he has a black eye, someone hit him—and then I’m on top of him. “Where is she? Where the fuck is she?”
He’s just strong enough to stay upright when my fists collide with his chest. His shirt pulls tight in my fists. The crash of the ocean is loud in my ears, or maybe it’s my pulse. “Don’t.”
I want him to tell me she went for a swim. That she’s hiding behind the goddamn jungle leaves. That she’s building a fucking sandcastle.
Anything to disprove the desolation in his beautiful dark eyes.
Don’t. That one word is my worst nightmare.
“What did you do with her?” I shout into his face.
His cheeks are red with the fight and the bruise under his eye is going a deep purple already. It speaks to the force of the hit. I want to brush it with my fingertips, want to demand to know who did it so I can kill them, and that would be the wrong fucking thing, because he’s here and June’s not and her absence strikes me as offensively wrong.
I’ve gone wrong. I’ve gone so fucking wrong.
I shouldn’t want her here at all, but I do. I shouldn’t be relieved that he’s here, but I am. I shouldn’t want to punch him and kiss him at the same time.
“I’m sorry,” he says, his voice hoarse.
A heartbeat passes, maybe two, and I back him up toward nothing, toward more sand, and drag him in closer. I make my voice dangerously soft. “Sorry about what, Theo?”
He doesn’t make any move to touch me.
He doesn’t lift his hands to shove me off.
He just…looks away. “I didn’t want to ruin her, Carter. We were touching her. Kissing her.”
“We fucked her six ways to Sunday. I know that. What did you do?”
“I saved her the only way I could. By sending her away.”

Excerpt #2 Poppy:
I’m doing my third show this week; I’m exhausted but focused as I walk down the catwalk. I’ve tried to forget about what happened a few weeks back, but it hasn’t been easy. His voice keeps creeping back out of the box I put it in. I swear I’m losing my mind on more than one occasion, because I think I see and hear him everywhere.
When I catch a glimpse of a blond head in the front row, my eyes dart quickly in that direction. Deep blue eyes the color of the ocean stare up at me. A brilliant white smile flashes across his face as he looks at me. My ankle wobbles slightly but I somehow maintain my balance and force my eyes to snap up and look at nothing but what’s ahead of me as I complete my circuit.
I’m an internal mess by the time I get through the show. I had three outfits to showcase on the runway. I didn’t look for him again, at least not until my last circuit, when the show was finally over. I don’t see Surfer Man, but there is a man with blondish hair not far from where I saw him. It could have been him I saw. Maybe I just imagined it was Surfer Man. That must be what happened. Christ, I must be going crazy. A million thoughts are swirling through my head as I walk off stage and head back to my station.
“You okay?” someone I don’t know asks as I start to change. I don’t answer. I’m a bundle of nerves as I quickly slip into my jeans and t-shirt and bend down to tie my sneakers. I can’t get him out of my mind. God, he looked exactly the same. How is that even possible? It’s been ten years. No! It wasn’t him. You need to stop this shit; I tell myself as I stuff the rest of my things into my bag in a hurry to get the hell out of there.
Just as I’m about to leave the backstage area, one of the girls comes up to me holding a huge bouquet of pink roses. She shoves them in my direction and squeals in excitement, “Poppy, you have an admirer. These were just dropped off for you a couple of minutes ago, you lucky bitch.”
I stop dead in my tracks and give her a little smile, trying to contain the rapidly growing terror inside. “Oh wow! Seriously? They’re beautiful. Is there a card?” I glance at the gorgeous bouquet still in her arms but don’t see one.
She gives me a funny look. “No, he just handed them to me and made me promise to get them to you as quickly as possible. He said it was a surprise. God, he was super dreamy,” she says as a lusty smile crosses her face. “Does he happen to have a brother by any chance?”
I shake my head. “I don’t know. What did he look like?” I ask as I nibble on my lip, hoping like hell she’s going to say he has dark hair.
She gives me a curious look. “Tall, fit, blond, with a sun-kissed golden tan, sexy as hell smile and the most gorgeous blue-green eyes. Total dreamboat.”
She is still talking but I can’t hear what she is saying over the pounding of my heart, each beat seeming louder than the one before. It’s him. He’s here. What do I do? My stomach lurches and I can feel a cold sweat settling over my body as panic overtakes me.

Excerpt #3
She set her beer down and got up to poke at the fire again. She put in more logs, but on her way back to her chair, she tripped over my feet. I reached an arm out and pulled her into my lap before she fell on her ass. Or worse, into the fire.
“Whoa there,” I said.
A blush rose across her pale face. For a moment, time stood still as I cradled her in my arms, and she stared into my very soul. She slid her hands around my neck and bent her head to mine to meet me in a slow kiss.
When she kissed me, I forgot about all the reasons why this was a bad idea. I didn’t stop her when she took the lead and ran her tongue across mine. Instead, I slid my hands up the back of her hoodie, my body tingling as I felt the warmth of her skin, and I kissed her harder. We kissed for so long the fire had died down when she pulled away.
She shifted, straddling me like she might ride my dick right here in front of the fire.
Don’t think about that, Felix. Stop thinking about fucking her again.
“Fe?”
“Yeah?” I croaked out.
“Tell me to stop,” she said as she rested her forehead against mine and her lips ghosted across mine. “Tell me you don’t want to kiss me again.”
I cupped her face and pulled back to take her all in. Her cheeks were flushed pink, and her lips were swollen from being kissed too much. And yet not enough. I wanted to kiss her all night long until she begged me to stop.
“Gem, I want to kiss you until you can’t breathe. I want to take you inside and have my way with you until you’re gasping for breath and can’t handle one more orgasm. And then I want to give you one more.”
She bit her lip, and then the little brat rubbed herself on my dick. Fuck me. She was going to be the end of me.
I gripped her hair in my fist. “I can only give you this week. I can’t give you anything more.”
She dipped her head back down and hovered over my mouth. “Give me this week. Fuck me until you break me, and come Sunday, we’ll go home with nothing changed.”
“I want something to change.”
“What’s that?” she asked and stared at me with eyes hooded with lust.
“After this week, you won’t hate me anymore.”
“No promises,” she said and kissed me again.
We were kidding ourselves with these promises, but we were too horned up to think about the consequences. If she wanted a summer fling, I could give her that, but that was all I could give her. No matter how much I longed for something more.

Excerpt He scooped her into his embrace on the gym floor. “I’d ask you what’s wrong”—he wrapped his hand over her sweaty belly—“but I know.”
With every week of her possessed workouts, the swell had disappeared to her strong abs showing back through. But Daniel knew—this wasn’t about weight or vanity. Not his wife. She had none.
This was about the shooter.
For two months, Daniel had watched her. How, if she wasn’t smiling at the twins, she was lost in thought. What was she plotting? It concerned him.
She wrapped her arms around his neck. “I’ll be okay.”
He didn’t believe her. “I know what’s driving you, but you’ve got to pace yourself. If you don’t, you’ll tear something, and then we’re fucked. The last place we want to be now is in hospital, not with this virus out there.”
The baby monitor he set on the bench cried out. He glanced at it. Caroline stirred. Of course she was awake again.
“I’ll get her.” She pecked his cheek. “You get your workout in.” She stood up from his arms.
“Fran’s got them.” He grabbed her hand gently. “Stay with me, just for a minute.”
He stood up, watching the monitor while he nestled her against his chest. Fran appeared on the screen in front of the cot, softly shushing Caroline back to sleep.
Thank God for that sweet woman. Fran gave them the breaks they needed. Charlie had protested at hiring a nanny, but he searched anyway and she was glad he did.
He called Fran for a phone interview from the hospital. She was perfect, from London, ending a job in Nashville with celebrity musicians whose teens no longer needed her. She had the experience and fifty-two years of wisdom.
Once Daniel explained to Fran the situation, fully disclosing the risk, she didn’t hesitate. She met them at the dock in Bluffton for the trip out to Daufuskie Island and hadn’t left since.
“See.” He nodded toward the monitor. “She’s got them.”
Charlie’s body relaxed against his, and a need, a tension started stirring within.
She had welcomed his hugs, his kisses, but that was all. He tried a few times after the six weeks they were told to wait. Fuck, he was desperate for her. But each time, Charlie gently removed his hand from between her thighs. Now, he didn’t even try, digging deep for patience instead. It was hard.
His cock didn’t receive the patient message, tenting his thin black gym shorts with a stiffy.
“I feel you, Sex God,” she murmured against his chest.
His hand pressed down to the small of her bare back. “I feel you too, Sex Goddess.” Her workout clothes always turned him on. Hell, she could wear a Hessian sack and make him horny as hell.
“I’m not ready yet.”
“Your patient husband knows that, but his lonely cock doesn’t.”
“Should I leave you here for a workout and to rub one off?”\
“Only if you watch me… and you do the same.”
“You little shit.” She pulled back with a sly smile. “You tryin’ to tempt me?”
“I’ve got to. I know you’re not ready, babe, but I’m going to break my dick off wanking without you.” He meant it. It had been months, a lonely hell.
She sighed, eyes half-rolling. “I’m not trying to starve you. I know we can now, but I don’t feel like myself.” Pulling her body away. “I don’t know how ‘mom’, ‘wife’ and ‘Charlie’ come together now. It’s fucking weird. It’s like I’m out of my body and need to get back in it, but I don’t recognize it. And now… I’ve got this.”
Her gesture took his gaze, only turning him on more. Staring down at the pussy he missed, knowing its hidden beauty, he didn’t give a damn about a Cesarean scar, even though he hadn’t seen it yet.
“Good God, babe, you’re even more beautiful to me now.” His hand smoothed over her hourglass waist. “All I do is admire you and want you but you’ve been hiding from me for months.”
His finger lifted her chin, asking her eyes to meet his. “Let me at least hold you, in the shower, in our bed, with nothing on.” He kissed her lips, aware how his new beard tickled them, dusting over their sexy slope, confessing, “I miss us.”
They needed this. It was their connection, their love. The instant they met, the urge for the other was so powerful it overwhelmed their senses. The greatest desire thrilled his flesh from the moment he touched Charlie.
And he’d almost lost her.
He needed to cherish every inch of her, lavishing her with tender touches, fucking her so hard. He had no choice; he had to show her how much he loved her and would until his dying day.
“Even if we tried that, just being naked,” she said. “I won’t be able to relax. I don’t think I’ll have an orgasm again in this house, not with the twins and Fran down the hall.”
“Fran’s not uptight. Have you heard her talk? She’s an old-school feminist. I assure you when her wife can travel here from London, we will hear them down the hall.”
“Okay, fine. But what about the twins? Between Caroline, who never sleeps, and Duke, who demands my attention when he’s awake, I don’t get a second to relax unless I’m in the gym.” Her hand caressed his hard bicep. “It’s not fair between men and women. Your cock is a hot light switch, but my vag is a cold oven, it’s gotta warm up, and it can’t with all this baby stuff going on.”
That amused him. And challenged him. “Give me a chance, babe.” His lips climbed up her neck while he murmured, “You always switch my cock on, and you know I can melt you into the wettest heat you’ve ever dripped.”
He took gentle bites before she snapped her neck closed. “Fuck, your beard tickles.”
“Oh, yeah?”
Nuzzling into her, he made her squeal, squirming from his snatching embrace—a futile effort. He wouldn’t let her go.
“Quit it.” Her eyes twinkled. “Or I’ll tie you down and shave that thing off.”
He ceased the tickle, but not his smile. Fuck’s sake, he loved her like this. Laughing. Playful. Warming up to him, he could tell, her nipples pebbled under her sports bra.
His dirty mind devised a plan; his hard cock signed off on it. “I’m getting us an afternoon, alone, in the house for a few hours. We’ll just shower and cuddle, I promise.”
“How do you propose to do that?”
“Those two cherubs have grandparents on this island ten minutes away. Pop and Evelyn would jump at the chance to have them for a few hours. And Fran could visit with them or take the time to herself.”
“I feel like shitty parents sending our babies away for an afternoon so we can fuck.”
“Yes! Are we finally going to fuck?” That was all he heard. Not the “shitty parent” part, because that, he didn’t buy.
“I’m serious, Daniel. How does that look? We send our kids away so we can have an afternoon of sex?”
“Since when does my fit wife give two shits for what people think?” He gripped her hand. “I’m serious, Charlie. We’ve been through enough. If we don’t stay connected and strong as a couple, we are no good to them as Mum and Dad.”
“Quit trying to make that stick, Pierce.” She tongued her teeth, smiling. “I’m not gonna be ‘Mum’ and you’re not gonna be ‘Dad.’ More like ‘Mama’ and ‘Daddy’ in these parts.”
“You’re off your trolley. Fran and I will see to it that they have proper English accents.”
He teased her, relishing how it pissed her off, adoring when she fired back…
“Bless your heart, Pierce, and count heads. You’re outnumbered.” She wiggled against his cock. It was begging for her. “I’ve got you beat.”
Yes, she does, Pierce. Grinding on you. That’s your wife.
“So, it’s a plan then, Mrs. Pierce?” He seized her firm bum, pulling her harder against his raging hard-on, wanting to take her now.
“That’s not my name.”
Deploying the grin that inspired millions of thirsty posts, “It is when I’m fucking you,” he knew it wet her pussy too.
That naughty truth flashed across her eyes. The last time they made love, months before, he made her moan that name while rousing her with slow thrusts from behind.
“All right, Mr. Ravenel. Give my body a few more weeks to heal before you come at me with all this hard hotness. Then we’ll see if you get lucky.”
Breaking from his embrace, she delivered a swat to his arse before swishing out of the room. Minutes later, she appeared on the monitor with Duke, kissing his forehead before lying him down to change his nappy.
He watched the spectacle, a smile taking his entire being. Gawd blimey, I love her.

Excerpt #2 She’d barely run two blocks before he caught up with her.
‘Where are you going?’ His usually steady voice trembled.
‘Away from you,’ she hissed.
‘Sarah, please. It’s not safe–’
‘No!’ she shouted.
Panic clouded his face. Although they seemed to be the only inhabitants in the frozen and indifferent streetscape, she lowered her voice. ‘Don’t tell me it’s not safe. I was perfectly safe until you arrived in London.’
‘And now you’re not, and I’m sorry. I’m sorry that you got caught up in my mess of a life. I never meant for that to happen. That’s why–’ He ran his hand over his face and through his hair.
Sarah crossed her arms. ‘Why what?’
His chest moved up and down as he took several deep breaths. ‘That’s why I ended things between us the way I did. Why I said those horrible things to you.’
Her heart clenched at the memory. ‘What are you talking about?’
‘They knew about you.’ His voice was barely a whisper. ‘I couldn’t come with you to London. You had to be as far away from me as possible. It was the only way to keep you safe.’ He looked past her, as if the truth lay hidden in a shadow. ‘I’m sorry, Sarah.’
Headlights from a lone car briefly illuminated the pain etched in his features. Her own emotions were exhausted, unable to process anything.
‘I will do everything in my power to keep you safe.’ The conviction had returned to his voice. ‘I love you, Sarah. I always have.’
Her heart skidded to a stop. For twelve long, lonely months, all she’d wanted to hear were those words from Alex Riley. Nothing about the way he’d ended their relationship had ever made sense to her. The love they’d shared had been so alive, so nourishing. It had lifted her to a plane higher than she’d ever imagined possible. She ached to feel his arms around her. To tell her that the only thing that was real, was their love. Not the horror of the last few hours, and not the axe he’d hacked through her heart when he’d left her.
Sarah turned away to gather her thoughts. Maybe she’d been thinking about this all wrong. Alex had killed a man today. A man that had beaten her friend and was there to cause her harm. He’d protected her. Just as he’d protected her the night they met. And protecting her was the reason he said he ended it between them. Was it possible? Could they find a way back to each other?
She forced her brain to engage, to try to make sense of all the unimaginable events. What if Brodie was still out there? What if he had reinforcements? She thought about the dead body in her flat. Maybe Alex had killed him in self-defense, but neither of them had a scratch on them. Would they be believed? Then she remembered Heather. If she was awake, she could explain.
Sarah closed the gap between them. Reaching up, she ran her hand through his hair, a thousand memories rushing over her. Her heart began to beat again.
‘Alex, if we just explained what happened, you were protecting me.’ The words tumbled out as the thoughts formed.
Alex shook his head. ‘No one’s going to believe that, Sarah.’
‘But it’s true,’ she protested. ‘Heather will tell them, once she’s better. I know she’ll back us up.’
He took her hands between his, holding them over his heart. ‘It’s not that simple. The Devils won’t stop coming after me.’ He inhaled a shaky breath. ‘Or you.’
‘The police will help us, you’ll see. Everything is different here.’ She had to convince him of that. In London, she’d shed the shackles of her family and their secrets, she’d landed her dream job and now the man of her dreams was here. And he still loved her.
‘Sarah, I know this doesn’t make sense to you, but I’m asking you to trust me.’ His eyes pleaded with her to understand. ‘I never meant for any of this to happen, I would have stayed away. But now that you’re here with me, I can’t walk away from you. Not again.’
He really wants me?
To be with Alex was all she’d ever wanted.
‘I don’t know if you could ever love me again, and I know I don’t deserve it. I couldn’t stand to lose you.’ He lifted one hand to her face, rubbing his thumb along her jaw. ‘I’m begging you, please come with me?’
All rational thought floated away as his lips found hers. His kiss was soft, almost fearful. She rose up on her toes, firming her mouth against his. Alex wrapped one arm around her waist, pulling her close, his other hand entwining in her hair. Their lips parted and tongues collided. Her hands snaked around his neck, needing to be closer still. He moaned into her mouth, before pulling back.
‘We need to go,’ he whispered.
At that moment, Sarah would go anywhere with him, just to be with him. She nodded. ‘Okay.’

—————————————————————————-
My Review This was such a fun read! It starts off with a bang and just keeps going. Fifteen-year-old Jacob, his single mom, and his mentally ill older brother, Michael, move back to their hometown, and into a house that may or may not be haunted. The fact that Michael hears voices doesn’t help Jacob when he starts to hear a girl’s voice coming from inside his house. After all, schizophrenia can run in families. But it’s more than just voices with someone writing on the walls of his closet. Soon Jacob is seeing things, or someone specifically — Sanctuary (Ary) Daniels, the first girl he ever crushed on in middle school, who mysteriously disappeared before he moved away.
But nothing is as it seems. Ary tells a horrific tale of abuse at the hands of her foster mother, but she also tells obvious lies about how she ended up in his house, only making everything else she tells him suspect. But Jacob is drawn to her, and not just because she was his first crush. There’s something about her that makes him trust her more than not. And that’s when things get really interesting.
Plot The story flows really well and kept me turning the pages. Chapters are short and full of action and mystery that never stops coming. The romance is sweet and well done. The author does a masterful job of weaving in twists and turns that leaving you needing to know what happens next!
The Characters I love all the characters. They’re all so interesting and fun; like the kind of people you’d want to hang out with. You know, without all the dangerous stuff happening on-page. Jacob is sweet, Michael is multi-faceted, their mom acts like you’d expect a mom of teen boys to behave — I cannot overstate how rare that is in YA. Ary is by far the most intriguing character, with good reason, which I will not spoil for you.
Top Five Things I Loved About THE STARS FORGOT US 1. Jacob. He has his flaws, but he’s one of the good ones.
2. Twists. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you realize you have no idea what’s going to happen next.
3. Lucas. Jacob’s cousin, and one of his best childhood friends, is deeply layered. He kept me guessing on what his angle really was.
4. Pacing. The story moved at a perfect pace, keeping my interest throughout.
5. Ary. Her sweet innocence and complex nature made her an enigma that was a fun change from many YA love interests.
Bottom Line Fun fast read with excellent pacing and wonderful characters! This makes me want to read more by R.J. Garcia.

Excerpt #2 Belatedly comprehending that her shock must have registered on her face, Sam placed her hand on his shoulder and tried to relax. A smile came tentatively to her face, but Alex’s returned expression was more distracted than anything. They began swaying in time to the music as he finally spoke.
‘Sorry if you didn’t want to dance,’ he apologised. ‘I didn’t want to talk to anyone else, and this seemed like a good way to keep people from interrupting.’
Sam shook her head. ‘Don’t apologise,’ she reassured him. ‘I like to dance. You just surprised me.’
Alex’s answering smile was more convincing than his last attempt. She became aware of his closeness as they moved through the throng, her thoughts straying back to their kiss. Her lips, jawline and neck were cool and tingling, contrasting against the rest of her heated skin. She felt vulnerable, like the private sensation on her skin was visible to him in some way.
Was he thinking about their kiss too, or was he preoccupied with their failed mission? Surprisingly, he soon revealed he was thinking about neither.
‘Where did you learn to tie such a perfect a Windsor knot?’ he asked.
Sam’s answering laugh was perhaps a tad giddy. She was relieved he hadn’t picked up on her neediness. ‘YouTube,’ she said. ‘My husband was terrible at it, so I had to learn how to do it for him. He claimed having little hands helped me, but really I think he just didn’t have the patience.’
She’d mentioned Logan without thinking, and almost stepped on Alex’s foot when her words caught up with her. She rarely spoke about her lost love, let alone so casually. The ease of her intimate admission overwhelmed her so much she almost missed Alex’s surprise entirely.
He’d gripped her hand a little tighter at the word ‘husband’, and she prayed he wouldn’t focus on her slip. To her relief, he didn’t mention it.
‘You do have small hands,’ he mused after a small pause. ‘And long fingers, come to think of it. Do you play an instrument?’
Sam chose to fall back on humour to mask how off balance she still felt. ‘That depends on your follow-up questions,’ she said. ‘Are you going to ask me to audition for your band, or are you just in the mood for a soulful rendition of “Three Blind Mice” on the recorder?’
Alex laughed out loud at this, attracting the attention of a few other couples around them. One woman seemed especially interested in their joke, forcing her dance partner to turn around so her back was no longer to Alex.
She was unpleasantly attractive, in the sort of way that was a little too well groomed. Her thin body was perfectly draped in an expensive silk dress, and her impeccably dyed and coifed hair was crowned by a fascinator Sam was sure at least one animal had died to contribute to.
The woman smiled predatorily at Alex, her talon-like nails gripping the shoulder of her dance partner a little tighter. Fine lines crossing her hands made a mockery of her too smooth face. She seemed decidedly more used to looking down her nose at people than smiling at them, however obnoxiously.
‘Alex,’ she said, nodding condescendingly.
Sam realised they knew each other, and she swiftly looked back at Alex.
He’d stopped dancing, his hand going limp and clammy in hers. His face was similarly slack with shock, and she suspected he wasn’t breathing. Whoever this woman was, Alex wasn’t pleased to see her.
The unpleasant woman’s smile widened at his obvious discomfort, and she pointedly turned her gaze to Sam. She sneered a little while looking the younger woman up and down, evidently not impressed with what she saw. Feeling defensive, Sam reminded herself she preferred to dress according to her own tastes, and not to suit the demands of current fashion. This skirt was her favourite piece.
‘Bit young for you, isn’t she?’ asked the woman, lazily. ‘Better get her some Botox if you want her to stay that way.’
Still visibly shaken, Alex didn’t respond.
The woman’s dance partner had a chuckle though and turned to smirk at them. His gaze lowered to Sam’s cleavage and lingered a moment, before looking back up at Alex. ‘Not going to introduce us?’ he asked, his face widening into a grin to rival the woman’s.
They both laughed at this, and Alex flinched.
Frightened of his reaction and sick of being sneered at, Sam let her big mouth do what it did best. ‘Excuse me,’ she said sweetly to the woman, gesturing to her fur and feather headdress. ‘Did you know your cat has caught a bird?’

—————————————————————————————
Excerpt #2 They exited the apartment, and outside, Raheem slipped dark sunglasses over his eyes and surveyed the street filled with passing cars and briskly walking pedestrians. He didn’t always wear shades, but they served a practical purpose when he worked close protection. In addition to shielding the eyes from direct sunlight, flashes, or glares, they kept eye movements hidden from potential attackers. As security personnel, his eyes constantly roved the immediate area around the principal, and this simple fashion tool made it a little more difficult for a would-be attacker to know where he was looking and which way he was going to move.
The first thing he noticed was Morris talking to the doorman, his back turned to the Mercedes. Raheem realized he had forgotten to let him know they were coming downstairs. Because he’d been distracted—by Katherine’s scent, the urge to caress her skin, and his own long held attraction to her.
Morris and the doorman were both laughing heartily at a joke, and Raheem’s temperature spiked.
“Morris, can I talk to you for a minute?”
They stopped laughing, Morris’s eyes opened wide, and he walked over. “I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you say you were coming downstairs.”
“I didn’t alert you, but what the hell is going on here? Why aren’t you paying attention to the car?”
“What do you mean?” Morris asked.
“Have you already swept the vehicle?”
“Of course. I do a sweep every morning,” Morris said, sounding offended.
“Then why don’t you have eyes on it?” Raheem demanded.
Morris’s cheekbones flushed pink. “Do you really think someone could do anything to the vehicle with me standing right here?”
Do you really think it would be hard for someone to do something to the vehicle? How difficult would it be for them to attach a tracking device or an explosive to the undercarriage while you’re yakking it up?”
Jaw tight and more color flooding his cheeks, Morris didn’t respond, probably knowing Raheem was right.
“It’s okay,” Katherine interrupted.
“No, it’s not okay,” Raheem said angrily.
“Morris is very good at his job,” she said, her glare signaling he should stop.
“Why did you hire me? To make sure you stayed safe.”
“I would appreciate it if you don’t talk to me in that tone.”
“And I would appreciate it if you’d let me do my job.”
He didn’t care Morris was silently watching the exchange. Katherine had to learn to trust him. He turned to Morris. “We need to do another check of the vehicle.”
“I’m going to be late for my meeting,” Katherine said.
“Then you’ll be late,” Raheem said.
Her eyes flashed at him. “May I speak to you privately for a moment please?”
She didn’t wait for a response and stalked away—heels clicking the sidewalk and the natural sway of her hips catching his eye. While Morris checked the car, Raheem followed and Katherine swung around and faced him.
“Do you have to talk to me like that in front of Morris?”
“You have to let me do my job,” Raheem grated.
“I have no problem with you doing your job, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to talk to me however you please. You work for me,” she enunciated.
“Exactly. And my job is to keep you safe.” He removed his sunglasses and challenged her with a stare. “If you don’t like my methods, fire me.”
Katherine’s chin tilted a little higher. “Keep pushing me and I will. Get that damn chip off your shoulder.”
She swept past him and went to talk to the doorman. After Morris finished checking the vehicle, they all climbed in and took off.

Excerpt Fear snapped her into action and she threw her legs over the side of the bed. No sooner had the alarm kicked on than it abruptly kicked off. The barking eased to an occasional snarl. What she heard next frightened her more.
Voices. Lots of voices, and she knew whose they were.
Her entire family was downstairs. All six of them.
And Markus is alone with them.
With her heart racing at what she could only imagine in her worst nightmares was happening downstairs, she snatched up her clothes then opted for the more expeditious option—her robe.
Still tying the robe around her waist, she all but ran from the bedroom. Halfway down the stairs, she froze. Heat scorched her face.
Markus’s expression was grim as he stood in front of the keypad in nothing more than his jeans and a gun tucked into the small of his back. Ghost sat obediently beside him, with only the slightest rumble coming from the back of his throat. Her father, mother, two brothers and sisters stood in front of the open door.
“What’s doing, sis?” her oldest brother, Jimmy, asked in a frosty tone.
Wearing only her robe, it was pretty darned obvious exactly what she and Markus had been doing.
“Merry Christmas, Cassidy,” her younger sister, Kaitlyn, said, flipping back her unruly head of red curls and grinning as she cast an unabashedly appreciative eye at Markus. “Merry Christmas to you, too.”
While she totally understood her sister’s sentiments because, well, Markus was hotter than hell in his bare feet and the top snap of his jeans still undone, it irked to have her sister drooling over her new boyfriend.
Boyfriend?
She shook her head to clear it. Deciphering what she and Markus were exactly would have to wait. Especially after last night’s conversation. Right now, there were more pressing matters at hand. Like keeping her father and brothers from pounding on Markus all at once.
Cassidy took the rest of the stairs in record time, stepping in front of Markus and Ghost as if they needed protection. He might not know it, but he does. “What are you all doing here?”
Sean, the second oldest sibling of the family, tapped a finger on his watch. “It’s ten o’clock, Cass. On Christmas Day.”
She gasped. Oh my gosh.
Her father pursed his lips as he glared at Markus. “We were worried about you, lass,” he said in the same thick Irish brogue that hadn’t diminished much, even after decades of living in the U.S.
Jimmy crossed his arms. “You’re always the first under the tree. When you didn’t show at nine on the button, we were surprised.”
“When you didn’t show by nine fifteen,” her older sister, Brianna, chimed in, “we got a little worried.”
“By nine thirty,” her mother added in a lilting brogue and coming to wrap an arm around her shoulder and give her a good squeeze, “we decided to come by and check on you. You can blame me for that. I insisted.”
Then and there, she made a New Year’s resolution to collect every single one of her house keys from every single member of her family so this would never, ever happen again. “I’m sorry to have worried all of you, but you could have called or at least texted.”
“Between all of us”—Sean swept his arm to encompass the family—“we probably called ten times.” He pointed to her phone which was right where she’d left it last night. On the kitchen counter.
She smacked a hand to her forehead. “You did call, didn’t you?”
As if sensing there were no words he could say to pacify her family at finding a half-naked man and a snarling dog in her house, Markus wisely remained silent. She couldn’t be sure whether the slight upturn of his lips was a grimace or a smile. Given the awkwardness of the situation, she’d go with grimace.
Her father arched a brow. “Care to introduce us, lass?”

SERVE ‘N’ PROTECT (Federal K-9 Series #5) by Tee O’Fallon
Synopsis Ambushed and left for dead, U.S. Secret Service K-9 Officer Markus York is on the mend and laying low in a safe house while his team tracks down his attacker. But Markus isn’t good at sitting still. Even with his K-9, Ghost, for company, he gets restless and decides now is the perfect time to do some repairs around the house…and inadvertently tears open his wounds.
Fresh out of a bad relationship that ended after a car accident left her with limited mobility, freelance accountant Cassidy Morgan has sworn off men. At least, that’s the plan. Until a frantically barking dog leads her to a neighbor’s house where she finds a mysterious man out cold and bleeding on the floor…and mumbling things like “no, they’ll find me” when she tries to call an ambulance.
Yeah, that’s not at all concerning.
Despite Markus’s surly attitude, Cassidy senses there’s something else at work beneath his rugged, keep-your-distance exterior. Whatever it is, it’s sexy as hell.
With someone still trying to kill him, Markus doesn’t want an innocent to get hurt, let alone take care of him.
If only his dog wasn’t crazy in love with her.
If only the chemistry between Markus and Cassidy didn’t explode whenever they were in the same room.
If only Cassidy wasn’t a target now, too.
————————————————————————————–
Excerpt He jerked his head to a table on the other side of the room. “Ghost. Water bottle.”
Ghost went to the table and grabbed a water bottle in his teeth. He brought it to them, letting the bottle slip free into Markus’s waiting hand. She expected it to be punctured in at least one place, but it wasn’t.
He handed her the bottle. “You earned this.”
“Water? I earned a lot more than this.” She held up the bottle. “Try that pepperoni pizza in the bottom of my freezer. Talk nice to me, and I’ll share it with you. Oh, wait. I forgot you’re carb-free. Well, more pizza for me. If the weeds were growing outside, I’d make you a dandelion salad.”
“Actually, Little Miss Snark,” he said, setting the clipboard on the bench behind him, “that’s not a bad idea. Dandelion leaves are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.”
“Well, don’t botanical factoids just get your heart racing?” She stood and her leg, unaccustomed to the workout, promptly gave out from beneath her.
Markus grabbed her upper arms, steadying her. Instead of releasing her right away, he just stared at her, frowning and scowling, if that were even possible. “Yeah. They do,” he murmured.
His gaze dropped to her lips and he took a step closer, cupping her face with one hand. The fresh scent of whatever soap he’d used filled her lungs, along with his own brand of sexy-as-hell man-scent. As he slowly lowered his head, her lips parted and she held her breath.
Was he going to kiss her? Did she want him to? Oh. Yeah. She did, and with every inch their mouths drew closer, her stupidly hopeful heart pounded faster.
Who knew dandelions were the way to this man’s heart?
Markus released her and when he stepped back, there was no missing the flicker of regret in his eyes. “We should get that pizza in the oven,” he said in a voice so gruff it sounded as if someone had taken sandpaper to his vocal cords.
Or not.
As she watched him and Ghost go up the stairs, Cassidy breathed deeper to slow the wings of those beating butterflies in her belly. Kissing him had just leaped to the top of her Most Wanted list, but it was just as well he hadn’t gone through with it. Getting too attached to him would be in direct violation of the second item on her New Year’s resolutions list: Never, ever, get her heart broken again. Just as importantly, being kissed by him would only have given her a fleeting taste of something that wouldn’t last. Sooner or later, Markus would leave. He was part of another world, and he’d only dropped into hers temporarily.
What she ought to do was make the most of his company and his physical therapy while it lasted. Then call it good when he left.
Cassidy took a deep breath then grabbed her cane and headed for the stairs. Not that she was close to falling in love with Markus, but getting hung up on a guy like him would be stupid. It had never been in her nature to give up on love or stop hoping for it again, even if the price to be paid for love gone wrong was loss and pain, but with Markus, that pain was guaranteed.

Author Eden Butler is revealing the cover to DARIO, the second book in the adult romantic suspense series, The Carelli Family Saga, releasing July 20, 2021. See below for the cover, information on the book and series, preorder links, and a link to add it to your Goodreads TBR.
DARIO (The Carelli Family Saga Series #2) by Eden Butler
Synopsis Dario Carelli has one job—get the new bakery owner to fall in line.
Cuoricino, New York, their sleepy, small town, has rules. Rules his ironically kind-hearted mob boss brother set in place to keep everyone safe. But Ava Anderson has no intention of following a single one.
The woman is a hassle Dario doesn’t need. She ignores his ultimatums and mocks his intimidating guards, sending them back to him with a basket of baked goods and amped up on too much espresso.
If Dario thought the charm he once had before landing in prison for a crime that wasn’t his would work, he’d teach Miss Ava a lesson in pleasure she wouldn’t soon forget.
But behind her sarcastic tone and forced smiles, Dario recognizes the same flight-or-fight look in Ava’s eyes that had grown sharper in his own reflection during his time locked inside one of New York’s roughest prisons: the desperation of someone with nothing left to lose.
When Ava takes off, only to return months later pretending she’s not looking over her shoulder every time she walks down the street, Dario realizes there’s something more dangerous in Cuoricino than the enemies his brother’s rules try to safeguard: a woman he’d die to possess and kill to protect.

The eldest of the three wealthy Garrett brothers, Reese Garrett is in the middle of a major purchase for his multimillion-dollar oil and gas company, Garrett Resources. The Poseidon offshore drilling platform venture will greatly enhance the company’s value.
But when Reese is on a trip out to see the rig, his helicopter crashes, leaving him hospitalized and two men dead. It’s discovered the chopper was sabotaged, and Reese is determined to find out who’s behind the crash—and whether he was the intended target. Then, when his lover, Kenzie, is accused of her ex-husband’s murder—a man with a vested interest in the Poseidon deal—clues start pointing to a connection that puts Reese, Kenzie and her young son in the sights of a killer.
From the Texas heat to the Louisiana bayous, Reese and his brothers must track down the truth before the body count gets any higher.
—————————————————————————————
—————————————————————————————
Excerpt #2 “I’ve got a few things I need to add to my schedule,” he said. “Derek Stiles called yesterday. Looks like we’re having more problems with the rig.”
“You’ll get them sorted.” She flashed him a smile. “You always do.”
But there was one thing he was having more and more trouble handling and it was standing right in front of him.
Reese clenched his jaw and went to work.
He was sitting at his desk two hours later when his intercom buzzed.
“It’s Frank Milburn,” Kenzie said. “He has news about the crash.”
Milburn was in charge of the NTSB investigation. “Put him through.” Reese pressed the speaker button and settled back in his chair.
“I know you’ve been anxious to hear from us,” Frank said, a small man with close-cropped brown hair. “I wish we could have completed the investigation sooner, but these things take time.”
“I’m aware. So what have you found out?”
“The last of the reports came in. We’d been waiting for some metal structural tests. Combined with the rest of the information we’ve assembled, the reports revealed what we had recently begun to suspect but until today weren’t able to confirm.”
“Go on.”
“Sometime before the flight took off the morning of the crash, someone tampered with the engine. A piece of metal in one of the gears was filed just enough to cause it to grind itself to pieces. The flight control mechanism disconnected, rendering the helo uncontrollable. To put it in layman’s terms, the helicopter was sabotaged.”
Tension tightened Reese’s shoulders. He didn’t ask Milburn if he was sure. The NTSB team had been investigating the crash for weeks. Two men were dead. The authorities had to be extremely thorough. The question now was who had done it? And why?
“Have you found out who’s responsible?” Reese asked.
“Unfortunately, not yet. As we’ve known from the start and you were informed, pilot error contributed heavily to the event. There should have been room for the chopper to safely auto-rotate down, but the pilot misjudged his position. He came in too close to the building, one of blades clipped the corner, and the helicopter was torn apart.”
“So what, exactly, do you know?”
“As of today, we know a criminal act was committed that ended up causing the deaths of two men. As of this morning, the FBI will be taking over the investigation. They’ll be actively pursuing whoever is responsible for the crime, now a double murder.”
Murder. The news sent a chill down Reese’s spine. He leaned over his desk, shut off the speaker, and picked up the phone. “Whatever you find out, I’ll expect you to keep me in the loop.”
“I’ll do my best,” Milburn said. “It’ll be more difficult once the gears of the FBI begin to turn.”
He understood how a federal agency worked. Lots of interlocking pieces and parts that inevitably slowed things down. The call ended, but Reese had no intention of leaving the matter in the hands of some governmental bureaucracy, not even the FBI. The feds would have to start over, look at the crash from an entirely different angle. It could take weeks, even months.
Two men were dead and he could have been the third. He thought of the accidents that had been plaguing the Poseidon. The helo crash hadn’t been accidental. The chopper was meant to go down.

Synopsis Poppy Fynn gets bored easily, never staying with a job or relationship for long. After a year of cancer treatments, she’s in remission and ready for a change. Her new position as manager on an Idaho sheep ranch excites her as much as the neighboring, sexy, attitude-riddled rancher. Her encounters with Dakota Smith amuse her until he takes over her tour of his private club. Then, all she wants is more of him, any way she can get him.
Searching for the man Dakota Smith knows is responsible for his mother’s murder is his top priority, and he doesn’t have the time or patience for a relationship. So, why does he find himself concerned over one irritating redhead’s underweight appearance and the fatigue he sees on Poppy’s face when she pushes herself? Unable to resist getting involved, he vows nothing will keep him from avenging his mother, no matter how close he and Poppy become.
Thwarting an attempt on Poppy’s life shakes Dakota, but not as much as finally locating the man who killed his mother. Soon he’s forced to choose between honoring his vow of revenge or go to the only woman he’s ever loved when she needs him the most.
He was the only man who made her heart pound and her pulse jump, but would his quest for vengeance destroy their chance for anything more?
Her brazen personality and signs of poor health demanded his attention and threatened his vow to avenge his mother.
She never considered forever until him. He refused to get involved until her.
————————————————————————————–
Excerpt #1 With a startled cry, Poppy toppled to the ground, getting the wind knocked out of her as she landed on her back. The approach of pounding horse hooves shook the earth under her, then a pair of broad shoulders and a glowering, drop-dead gorgeous face blocked the blue sky above her. Even while struggling to get her breath back, she couldn’t help smiling in giddy pleasure.
Hard hands helped her up as he rumbled in a deep voice, “Your sheep are trespassing.”
Since she caught a hint of concern in that annoyed statement, she dismissed his complaint with an equally inane comment. “Your cattle are mingling with my sheep.”
He seemed to get a good look at her as she stood, one hand keeping hold of her arm while he swept the other across her ribs and around to her back. “You,” he growled, his acknowledgement of their prior meeting sounding like an accusation.
“Yep, me. Oh.” Her breath caught as he brushed off her butt, then she leaned forward, widening her grin. “I think you missed a spot.” His huff of exasperation amused her, and she patted his rock-hard chest. “Lighten up. Life’s too short to go around wound up so tightly.”
“I wouldn’t be wound up so tightly if you didn’t keep showing up like a thorn in my side,” he bit out. “If you’re not hurt, I’ll help you gather your livestock. I’m Dakota Smith, in case old man Sanders hasn’t told you. And you are?”
“Poppy Finnegan,” she answered, stepping back and reaching for Hank’s reins when Dakota released her arm. “And, no, Jerry hasn’t mentioned you.”
“What the hell kind of name is Poppy?” he asked in derision.
Okay, that disparagement irked Poppy. His continued discourtesy chipped away at her good humor, and she snapped, “What the hell kind of name is Dakota?”
He thumbed the brim of his hat up enough for her to get a good look into his coal black eyes. “An honored family name, passed down through generations.”
So, she touched a raw nerve. At this point, she didn’t care. “Well, I’m a colorful flower.”
“You’re colorful, I’ll give you that. Come on, let’s get to work.”
He sighed, and her annoyance dropped away. “If we leave them long enough, we could start a livestock breed of doodles.”
“Don’t even think it.”
Poppy gave up trying to get a smile out of Dakota. Instead, she mounted Hank, making sure she kept a good grip on the reins, and rode toward the herd without another word or looking at him again.
